She accessorized with a sentimental suite of jewelry that has been in her collection for more than thirty years
gave her the pieces as a silver wedding anniversary present in 1992
The demi-parure includes a necklace and a pair of earrings
The set was recently included in the Golden Jubilee jewelry exhibition at Amalienborg. Here’s a closer look at the necklace from the set. Margrethe discussed the pieces in a 2022 documentary series

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark
who "shockingly" renounced the Danish throne in January after 52 years
is in Copenhagen's University Hospital after falling at her Fredensborg Castle home recently
This led the Danish Palace's Director of Communications Lene Balleby to share
the queen is doing well but was admitted for observation for the time being."
The former monarch is said to be 'doing well' after her recent fall at Fredensborg Castle
The ex-head of state's successor and eldest son, King Frederik X
told gathered reporters outside of an event he was attending that the queen "Is in good hands," before adding
Margrethe II was scheduled to attend an event celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Department of Archaeology at Aarhus University
The ex-monarch was a lifelong archaeology enthusiast
and always said it was the profession she would have pursued if destiny had not called her to become Denmark's sovereign
Although still beloved throughout the Scandinavian nation, Norway's King Harald V turned on the shade back in January when asked about Denmark's Queen abdicating her throne after 52 years on the job."I stick by what I’ve always said
that I swore an oath to the Storting (parliament)
and it is for life," the monarch shared when asked if he had plans to abdicate his throne
Queen Margrethe II's abdication in January 2024
left the world with no reigning female monarchs
Like Great Britain's late Queen Elizabeth II
Harald V is a firm believer in the ancient code of monarchy
which is to reign and serve your subjects as head of state for every second of your life
Harald V has frequently mentioned his intention to serve in his role indefinitely
which was also a contradictory frequent talking point of Denmark's now-former monarch through the years
"It's always been: you stay as long as you live. That's what my father did and my predecessors. And the way I see it, too," the Queen stated in a 2016 interview. Her abdication was the first for a Danish sovereign in nearly 900 years and left the world with no reigning female monarch over any of its monarchies
King Harald's poor health is frequently in the news
which is believed to be why Queen Margrethe abdicated her throne due to her ill health
Although allegedly not in agreement with her decision, Harald V sent a message of congratulations to Denmark's new monarch, Frederik X, and his consort, Queen Mary
"My family and I wish to convey our warmest congratulations to you as Denmark’s new King and Queen," he said while also praising the former monarch by adding: "Her Majesty Queen Margrethe has followed her country and her people through times of joy and sorrow with warmth

Queen Margrethe of Denmark was rushed to hospital on Wednesday after suffering a fall at Fredensborg Castle, according to local media reports. It's understood from the royal household that the 84-year-old was admitted to the university hospital in Copenhagen
where Margrethe's accident reportedly happened
Margrethe was due to participate in an event on Friday
marking the 75th anniversary of the Department of Archaeology at Aarhus University
Margrethe had studied prehistoric archaeology at Copenhagen University
known for her chain-smoking and love of dachshunds
was last seen on Monday as she attended the Rungstedlund Prize 2024 at the Karen Blixen Museum
‘I have decided that now is the right time
2024 – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father – I will step down as Queen of Denmark
I will hand over the throne to my son Crown Prince Frederik,’ she said
she said: ‘In this country we haven't gone in for that way of handing over
It's always been: you stay as long as you live
That's what my father did and my predecessors
Queen Margrethe passed the throne to her eldest son
thanks to the skilled healthcare staff who took care of me
the operation also gave rise to thinking about the future – whether the time had come to leave the responsibility to the next generation.’
She handed the throne to her eldest son, Frederik, who now rules alongside his wife, Queen Mary – reportedly a close friend of the Princess of Wales
is still known as Her Majesty Queen Margrethe and can fill in as regent if King Frederik
Queen Mary and Crown Prince Christian are abroad
The former monarch (pictured here at the balcony of the Royal residence
on the occasion of her 78th birthday in 2018) is much-loved by the Danish
Across Denmark, Margrethe is much-loved figure for her down-to-earth attitude – in 2011, aged 70, she visited Danish troops in southern Afghanistan wearing a military jumpsuit, and she is said to be so ‘normal’ that she shops in the supermarket. No doubt the whole country, and the rest of the world, will be currently wishing her a speedy recovery.
Queen Mary of Denmark has shared unprecedented insight into the renovations at Fredensborg Palace
the summer residence of the Danish royal family
During a rare and intimate interview with Vogue Living Australia
the 52-year-old monarch revealed that she and her husband
have been working closely with eco-focused architect to transform an old workshop into a stunning Circular Annex house
"I shared my thoughts about incorporating and rethinking the use of the building and making it as sustainable as possible
both in its transformation and its operation," the Queen said
as the old two-storey building had a strong and beautiful structure and was built from good
"My husband and I followed the project from start to finish
It's fascinating to see how much can come from building with what already exists
Everyone approached the task with curiosity
always asking: 'How can we make this as sustainable as possible?'" Queen Mary explained
and their four children spend tmost of their time at Amalienborg Palace
but Fredensborg Palace has become their haven
where they celebrate birthdays and wedding anniversaries
King Frederik and Queen Mary are all set to leave Amalienborg Palace with kids next month
The Danish royal family has announced that the King and Queen will be relocating their residence to the Chancellery House at Fredensborg Palace in May
along with their four children – Crown Prince Christian
Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine- reside at Frederik VIII's Palace at Amalienborg in Copenhagen
the couple will be officially welcomed to Fredensborg Palace by the Mayor of Fredensborg and a performance by the Fredensborg Castle Church Girls' Choir and the Fredensborg Brass Ensemble
has a rich history and has undergone significant renovations to make it sustainable and modern
Queen Mary spoke about the renovations in an interview with Vogue Living Australia in January
where the 52-year-old monarch revealed that she and her husband have been working closely with eco-focused architect to transform an old workshop into a stunning Circular Annex house
both in its transformation and its operation," Queen Mary told the magazine at the time
The relocation comes days after the Danish Royal family celebrated Princess Isabella's 18th birthday
The Chancellery House is not new to King Frederik and Queen Mary as they lived there shortly after their marriage in 2004 and it functioned as their main residence until 2010

jaws gripping the top of a swaying blade of grass
That's the reality for ants infected with the lancet liver fluke
which begins with the hijacking of the ant’s brain
The unsuspecting ant climbs up and clamps its powerful jaws onto the top of a blade of grass
making it more likely to be eaten by grazers such as cattle and deer
Researchers from the University of Copenhagen’s Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences have discovered that the parasite's ability to control the ant is even more cunning than previously believed
the parasite can even get the ant to crawl back down the blade of grass when it gets too hot
"Getting the ants high up in the grass for when cattle or deer graze during the cool morning and evening hours
and then down again to avoid the sun’s deadly rays
Our discovery reveals a parasite that is more sophisticated than we originally believed it to be," explains Associate Professor Brian Lund Fredensborg
who conducted the study together with former graduate student Simone Nordstrand Gasque
now a PhD student at Wageningen University in the Netherlands
The study of the parasite has just been published in the scientific journal Behavoral Ecology
The researchers tagged several hundred infected ants in the Bidstrup Forests near Roskilde
"It took some dexterity to glue colors and numbers onto the rear segments of the ants
but it allowed us to keep track of them for longer periods of time," says Brian Lund Fredensborg
They then observed the infected ants’ behavior in relation to light
It was clear that temperature had an effect on ant behavior
the ants were more likely to be attached to the top of a blade of grass
the ants relinquished the grass and crawled back down
"We found a clear correlation between temperature and ant behavior
We joked about having found the ants’ zombie switch," says Brian Lund Fredensborg
several hundred parasites invade the ant’s body
where it can influence the ant's behavior
The rest of the liver flukes conceal themselves in the ant’s abdomen
there can be hundreds of liver flukes waiting for the ant to get them into their next host
They are wrapped in a capsule which protects them from the consequent host’s stomach acid
while the liver fluke that took control of the ant
You could say that it sacrifices itself for the others," explains Brian Lund Fredensborg.
Animals infected with many liver flukes can suffer liver damage as the parasite moves around the host's liver and bile ducts
Brian Lund Fredensborg notes that there are many other examples of parasites that alter animal behavior
parasites that hijack their host'sbehavior have a greater hand in the food chain than many might think
this new study sheds light on an extremely underrated group of creatures
parasites have never really been focused on that much
despite there being scientific sources which say that parasitism is the most widespread life form
This is in part due to the fact that parasites are quite difficult to study
the hidden world of parasites forms a significant part of biodiversity
they can help determine who eats what in nature
That's why they're important for us to understand," he says
The tiny liver fluke is widespread in Denmark
The researcher and his colleagues will continue to investigate the parasite
and excactly how it takes over an ant's brain
"We now know that temperature determines when the parasite will take over an ant's brain
But we still need to figure out which cocktail of chemical substances the parasite uses to turn ants into zombies," Fredensborg concludes
10.1093/beheco/arad064
Expression of trematode-induced zombie-ant behavior is strongly associated with temperature

The Hermitage Pavilions and the Royal Bridge in Fredensborg Palace Garden will be restored in connection with the 50th anniversary of HM The Queen’s accession to the throne
The restoration is made possible by a donation of 24 million DKK from the A.P
Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation for General Purposes
The restoration likewise marks the completion of many years of work on recreating the Baroque garden in Fredensborg Palace Garden
which in 2021 was honored with the Europa Nostra Award
Møller Foundation has continuously supported the extensive restoration of the palace garden since 2009
The work on the Pavilions and the Royal Bridge commences in the spring of 2022
Restoration of the Royal Bridge is expected to be finished at the end of 2022
but the Pavilions will be finished at the beginning of 2024
The two Hermitage Pavilions were originally built at the wish of Frederik IV to be used for service when the Royal Family dined by the lake
The existing buildings date from 1765 and were built by the French court architect Nicolas-Henri Jardin
The Royal Bridge was presented to Prince Henrik as a 60th birthday gift
The Royal Bridge is located at the end of the palace garden in a straight axis in line with one of the avenues that extend from Fredensborg Palace in a star shape and that are a distinctive mark from the garden’s original French Baroque style

Approximately 325 employees of the Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces (Slots- og Kulturstyrelsen) and external partners worked over the past 12 years to return this remarkable Baroque garden to its former splendour with special care taken to ensure the sustainable future of the garden
Also in attendance at the ceremony was the Danish Minister for Culture
the Representative of the European Commission in Denmark
the newly appointed chairperson of the Board of Directors of Europa Nostra Denmark
Her thoughtful speech underlined the exceptional work of the Slots- og Kulturstyrelsen and the truly interdisciplinary approach that led to its success
“The Fredensborg Palace Garden contains stories from the past
it contains a cultural heritage that tells us something about who we are and how Denmark is made up
But the restoration work also has a perspective
In addition to the long vistas across the garden
we find a look into the future with suggestions on how a baroque garden can be cared for more efficiently
more sustainably and in harmony with nature”
Mrs. Castenskiold also paid special respect to HRH Prince Henrik of Denmark, who was President of Europa Nostra from 1990 to 2017 and who passed away in 2018. His Presidency marked a phase of unprecedented growth and development for our organisation, which is today recognised as the true “Voice” of cultural heritage in Europe (read related news item)
backed up these words and also emphasised the international aspect of the project and the importance of the Fredensborg Palace Garden for the preservation of Danish garden heritage and as a national symbol of Danish art and culture
Christine Waage Rasmussen from the Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces represented the group behind the restoration of the Fredensborg Palace Garden
She provided an insight into the restoration work sharing the importance of the DNA-analysis processing to determine plant material as well as important design decisions necessary for public safety and the privacy of the Royal Family
which will be prominently placed in the Fredensborg orangery
was then presented to Christine Waage Rasmussen by Ettie Catsenskiold
HM Queen Margrethe of Denmark then addressed the audience
sharing her experiences in the decision-making process during the restoration and thanking the many professionals behind the beautiful results which show the importance of garden architecture for all to experience and to enjoy
The fine weather allowed for the reception to be concluded with a guided walk through the garden
where guests could see the results of the innovative restoration up close

The Danish Crown Prince family has moved homes again, as confirmed by the Danish Royal Court on Monday. Over the weekend, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary moved along with their children to the Chancellery at Fredensborg Palace, where the family will reside in the coming months.
The Crown Prince and Crown Princess took over the Chancellery shortly after their wedding in May 2004. Prior to this, the 18th century building was Queen Ingrid’s residence for many years. Until 2010, when Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg was completely renovated, the Chancellery was the Crown Prince Couple’s primary residence.
Last year, Frederik, Mary and their four children, Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, lived for a longer period of time in the building. They took up residence at Fredensborg Palace for seven months before moving back to Amalienborg Palace, where they have stayed up until this weekend.
Although the building seems a bit modest to function as a royal residence, it is quite exclusive. Inside, the Chancellery houses at each end a six-meter-high small hall in an almost square shape with a domed ceiling. The ground floor is 700 square metres and the first floor is 450 square metres. There are 30 rooms, which consist six of living rooms, three dining rooms and plenty of bedrooms.

The Danish royal family gathered at Fredensborg Castle for an important milestone celebration on Saturday: the confirmation of Princess Isabella
Princess Isabella’s confirmation service was held at the Fredensborg Castle Church
The crown princely family arrived together to the castle for the service
was waiting with arms open wide for her granddaughter’s arrival
The families posed for pictures on the steps of the castle before and after the service
Isabella poses with her parents and her siblings
the crown princely family poses with Queen Margrethe and a furry friend
Prince Joachim and Princess Marie of Denmark
Let’s have a closer look at some of the excellent jewels we saw as the royals arrived for the service
Princess Isabella wore diamond stud earrings with a very special brooch
made of diamonds with a large white pearl and a pink pearl pendant
was Princess Isabella’s baptismal gift from her grandmother
is that the brooch was originally Queen Margrethe’s baptismal gift from her grandmother
Isabella has worn the brooch in public before
for Prince Joachim’s 50th birthday celebrations in 2019
Princess Isabella wore a pair of rings with pink and white stones that echoed the colors of her brooch
And she also wore a little sparkle in her hair: a pair of leaf combs
are set with diamonds and dark blue sapphires
That brooch had two small additional diamonds on either side that Margrethe’s brooch lacks.) One of Margrethe’s ancestors
also owned a sapphire and diamond necklace clasp with a similar design
Crown Princess Mary wore heirloom jewels for the confirmation service as well. For the first time, she wore the turquoise and diamond earrings given to her as a 50th birthday present by Queen Margrethe
The earrings coordinated with the decoration on the belt of her dress
The earrings belonged to Queen Margrethe’s maternal grandmother, Princess Margaret of Connaught. The coordinating brooch, also given to Mary as part of her birthday present
is said to have come from the collection of Catherine the Great
Little Princess Josephine wore some interesting jewelry for the service as well. Along with her charming rings and bracelets, she wore a necklace with a pendant that should look very familiar to regular readers of the blog. It’s part of Georg Jensen’s “Jubilee Jewelry” line, made to celebrate Queen Margrethe’s recent Golden Jubilee
And Princess Marie brought along some sparkle as well
She pinned a diamond clip brooch to the lapel of her jacket
She also wore diamond stud earrings and a necklace with a matching diamond pendant
We got a peek inside the confirmation service via the official photos taken by Franne Voigt and shared by the Danish royal court
If the woman in the blue hat looks familiar
there’s a good reason: that’s Queen Mathilde of the Belgians
who is one of Princess Isabella’s godparents
Isabella also has one more royal godparent: Princess Alexia of Greece and Denmark
I think that may be her sitting to Mathilde’s right
And here they both are with the crown princely family
and the rest of Isabella’s godparents in a formal photo from the day
We also got some charming new portraits of Princess Isabella and the crown princely family from the day
with her heirloom brooch sparkling on her jacket
Doesn’t she look a lot like Queen Margrethe in her younger days
And here’s a gorgeous image of the entire crown princely family
Crown Princess Mary’s just beaming with pride
and such wonderful heirloom jewels on display
Here’s hoping Isabella has lots more important royal jewelry moments in her future

A small private funeral was held on Tuesday to celebrate the life of Prince Henrik of Denmark
The jewels worn by the women of his family for the occasion were deeply meaningful and sentimental
wore a heart-shaped brooch with a cypher in its center
She often wears the brooch for funerals and memorials
She also wore a pair of lovely pearl drop earrings
These are the same earrings she wore on her wedding day
each wore a brooch borrowed from their mother
Isabella wore her mother’s daisy brooch
(Queen Margrethe’s nickname is “Daisy.”)
Mary wore a lovely two-stranded pearl necklace that served as a quiet tribute to her late father-in-law
was Prince Henrik’s engagement present to her in 2003
She also pinned her small round diamond brooch
Princess Marie also wore a subdued brooch for the service

Photojournalist Bo Zaunders took a castle tour
visiting several of Scandinavia's historic sites that boast fascinating glimpses of history and various connections with the arts
He scheduled his tour — creating a series of three articles — to take advantage of as many operas
concerts and theatrical events at the castles as possible
Part one of the tour: Castles of Southern Sweden was published in the Feb
Here is part two of the tour: Castles of Denmark
Part three of the tour of Scandinavia's historic sites; back in Sweden, discovering royal theater history: Castle Hopping in Stockholm
And traveling within the small country is easy
it would be difficult to find a place more ideally situated than Hotel Store Kro in northern Sealand
we found ourselves next door to Fredensborg and in close proximity to two other major borgs (castles)
"When President Clinton was here," the receptionist told us
referring to Fredensborg where the royal couple often receives important guests
“Who just flew in and out with lots of security men who all stayed at Store Kro."
so our Fredensborg exploits were confined to the surrounding gardens
a king’s hunting ground-turned-mini-Versailles-turned-English-Romantic
comprising some 70 sculptures of Norwegian peasants and fishermen
ordinary people were rarely depicted in such a regal setting
white and pristine and with no onslaught of tourists
nearby Fredriksborg presented a visage of utter accessibility
Fredriksborg was built in the Dutch Renaissance style at the beginning of the 17th century
and was Christian IV’s preferred residence
Prominent among its treasures is the Castle Chapel where Danish kings were once crowned
has been the knight’s chapel for the Order of the Elephant and the Knights of the Dannebrog
notably a number of concerts at which you can hear baroque music played on the old Compenius organ
I knew it meant "cloth of the Danes," and referred to the Danish flag
the flag fell from the sky when the Danish army was in a particularly tight spot fighting the Estonians outside what today is the capital Tallin
It is by far Scandinavia’s oldest national symbol
and with its cross-adorned design it’s the precursor of all other Nordic flags
Studying the coats of arms that line the walls by the hundreds I learned that the Order of the Elephant
The elephant was picked as a symbol because it is a creature of patience
strength and virginity — virtues identical to those of the Virgin Mary
I found a sprinkling of foreign recipients of the award — among them Churchill
the President of the United States General Dwight D
we ran into the slumbering stone figure of Holger Danske
Once a mercenary at the court of Charlemagne
but got so homesick that he decided to walk all the way from the south of France to Denmark
Arriving exhausted at Kronborg (or what was there at the time)
Legend has it that he will awake and do battle if his beloved country is ever threatened
He sits in the deep underground of the castle
just a few feet from what was once a brewery
said to have supplied each soldier with about two gallons of beer every day
known throughout the theater-going world as Elsinore
Only two and a half miles from the Swedish coast
from which the Danes controlled shipping in the Sound and exacted Sound Dues
In the late 1500s it evolved into one of northern Europe’s most consequential Renaissance castles
As we trotted through its magnificent halls
we saw some tapestries which rather exemplified the kind of royal rivalry that ran rampant in Scandinavia some 400 years ago
Fredrik II had commissioned about 40 tapestries featuring no fewer than 113 Danish kings
Erik XIV presented a proposal for a similar series
featuring 143 kings — beginning with Noah as the progenitor of the Swedish royal line
Two hundred years after Shakespeare's death
every summer is a "Hamlet Summer." At the outdoor theater in the castle courtyard
we witnessed a rehearsal of "Al Hamlet," a contemporary play performed in Arabic
intermittently monitoring the proceedings from a seat in the audience
he told me that Al Hamlet was an explosive piece of political theater
I later found that it had toured the world and won several international awards
Instead of putting an exaggerated number of his predecessors on display
had chosen motifs from the Scanian War of 1675-79
rather paled in comparison with some of the hall’s other treasures
Exceptional are the silver lions and the throne made for Fredrik III in the 1660s
"was modeled upon the Old Testament’s description of Solomon’s throne and first used for the anointing of Christian V in 1671." Also
employed in the christening of the royal children for over three centuries
The visit to Rosenborg ended with with a peek at the well-guarded Crown Jewels
Knowing what a prosperous small country Denmark is
we were astonished to hear that a portion of them had been pawned to a German businessman when the country’s finances had reached an embarrassing low in the late 18th century
Denmark also boasted a court theater: In Christiansborg Castle in Copenhagen
showcasing 300 years of Danish theater history
Hans Christian Andersen's 200th birthday was celebrated with a special exhibition
the great author of fairy tales began his career by attending ballet classes
In a separate exhibit were oils and pastels of opera singers
actors and actresses who had once thrilled Danish audiences
they all dated back to what must have been a rather spectacular artist's ball in 1885
I walked through Hofteatret with Ulla Strømberg
a former theater and art critic for Danish Broadcasting
who for three years has been the museum's director
There was no mistaking her enthusiasm and drive
a passion that had recently produced a flurry of publicity and promotional activities
"And three times as many visitors." Gazing into the old theater
which 150 years ago was refurbished in the romantic Biederman style in deep reds and gold
I wondered if it was ever used for live performances

Queen Margrethe of Denmark held a Gala State Council Dinner at Fredensborg Palace alongside Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary for the Prime Minister, government members, Secretary of State and members of the Royal Court.
The dinner was held in the Dome Hall on Wednesday, 29 September, for the first time since 2017. Prior to that, the previous dinner was held in 2009.

A gala dinner is supposed to be held each election period, and local elections are due to be held in November. Mette Frederiksen became the Prime Minister of Denmark in 2019, and the next general election is set for 2023.
Those in attendance at the dinner included the Council of State, which is a government body that deals with laws and essential government measures. They ratify bills parliament has adopted and present them to Queen Margrethe.

This is not the first event Fredensborg Palace has hosted this week. On 26 September, Queen Margrethe held the Army’s Badge of Honour Dinner alongside Crown Princess Mary. The pair were even joined by the Queen’s dachshund Tilia during the Queen’s entrance into the Dome Hall.
The Army’s Badge of Honour is for exemplary service in the Danish army and is given to those who have had 25 years of service in the armed forces. Each branch of the military gets the Badge of Honour Dinner per year; as such, the Army Badge of Honour Dinner is only held every three years.

When Frederik the 4th built Fredensborg Palace approximately 300 years ago
there was a need for space at the palace for the Royal Danish House’s various livestock
horses were especially useful for work and an important means of transport
the royal family had an extensive stud operation with the coveted Frederiksborg horses
The king’s finest horses were kept closest to the palace
in the area between Fredensborg Palace Church and the Chancellery House
a riding ground and accompanying stable were built
The ground had been closed down for many years
in connection with His Royal Highness The Crown Prince’s 50th birthday on 26 May 2018
Møller & Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation granted a sum for re-establishment of the historic old riding ground
the foundation granted funds for restoration of parts of the Long Stable at Fredensborg Palace
The project has been carried out by the Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces over the past few years
and the re-establishment was completed in April.
The re-established historic riding ground and Long Stable will be used from now on by The Royal Mews
the Guard Hussar Regiment and the royal family
A pair of white Kladruber horses from The Royal Mews recently had the first try-out of the riding ground
which according to international standards for a dressage arena measures 20 x 60 meters
red-painted wooden fence was built around the riding ground
which is surrounded by a grass border and a beech hedge
The Long Stable was last renovated in 1914 during Christian the 10th’s time and therefore was in need of a makeover
and the whole restoration was carried out as considerately as possible and with respect for the historical geometry and color scheme
there are boxes instead of stalls so the horses can be stabled according to current regulations
The Royal Life Guard will be in red full-dress uniforms on The King’s birthday
and The Life Guard will carry out a grand changing of the guard ceremony on Amalienborg Palace Square at 11:50
HM Queen Margrethe’s 84th birthday on 16 April 2024 will be celebrated privately at Fredensborg Palace and in connection with the changing of the guard at Fredensborg Palace
The Band of the Royal Life Guards will perform a small concert in the Inner Palace Yard

The aesthetic of minimalism is further accentuated when purposefully contrasted with opposing elements. In the case of Fredensborg House, designed by NORM Architects
the exterior facade is characterized by patterns and rhythmic overlaps
which are not minimal in any sense of the word
when the focus is turned inward on the interior
a harmoniously clean space that welcomes one the second he/she enters the central hall of the house
NORM Architects consists of the design-duo Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Kasper Rønn
They both went to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts
NORM was founded in 2008 as a multidisciplinary design studio focusing on residential architecture
commercial interiors and industrial design
The large size of the property is not immediately noticed until one walks through the east side of the house towards the main entrance
The kitchen is centrally located to provide a more efficient workflow when preparing food and serving guests
The kitchen is partly hidden to disguise the clutter from guests
The lowest plateau of the house finds its way through three different areas of the house consisting of the living area
The lighting of this house is very strategic
and there is a breathtaking 18 meter stretch of vertical windows that connect the east and west axis of the house
The other viewpoint of the house is the facade of the garden
The architects explain “One of the main goals for this house is to provide a feeling of serenity and calm
the use of different contrasting materials was minimized
And to suit the elements of the buildings surroundings and staying true to its natural form
a lot of local materials were used.”

is situated overlooking Lake Esrum in the north of Denmark and boasts a large fleet of Jacobsen course maintenance equipment
Due to the cold climate a lot of golf rounds are played in a contracted period
typically 20,000 in the period from late April through to October
peaking at 100 rounds per day in high season
This puts a lot pressure on Per’s team – there are only four of them and one seasonal – so versatile and reliable machinery is of the utmost importance
“We are a very busy course and from around 100 members when we opened
“The performance and the reliability of our Jacobsen equipment is paramount to ensure we continually meet the needs of the members and the support we receive from local dealer Svenningsens is very good
“We have two Jacobsen seven cylinder LF4677 wide area fairway mowers which are really productive
while our HR-5111 is an excellent rough mower.”
Care for the environment is high on Per’s agenda and he has significantly reduced the fertiliser and nutrient inputs to the greens and fairways
One of his most recent additions is an Eclipse 322 diesel-electric hybrid greens mower; now in its second season it is using just two litres of diesel to mow all 18 greens
resulting in an impressive reduction in fuel costs
There are almost 200 bird boxes on the course and a professional ornithologist monitors the bird population and has created a chart which is displayed in the clubhouse detailing all the birds that can been seen in the vicinity
There are also feeding stations for Red der and pheasants during the winter months
Per has worked at Fredensborg since February 1998 and was previously assistant head greenkeeper at Hillerød Golf Club for 12 years
On leaving school he initially trained as a blacksmith
which is surprising when you appreciate that he is a very accomplished golfer
He has won the Danish Greenkeeping Association’s championship seven times
has played in the European and World greenkeeping championships
had a handicap of one and is currently playing off four

Denmark is a country in Northern Europe and is part of Scandinavia
the country consists of a peninsula in the northern part of the continent
The country has thousands of named and unnamed lakes distributed throughout its mainland territory and various islands
The largest lakes in Denmark are highlighted below
and is located in the northern part of the island of Zealand
The Arresø Canal drains the lake and empties into the Roskilde Fjord
The Arresø was previously a fjord but was cut off from the sea by tectonic activity that caused a rise in the land between it and the sea
the lake is known for its floral and avian diversity
and its habitat is protected by the Kongernes Nordsjælland National Park
Tourists can enjoy boat tours on the lake while visiting the national park
Lake Esrum is Denmark’s second biggest lake
The lake is located in central North Zealand
which is one of the country’s largest forests
which is an official residence of Denmark's royal family
is located on the southeast shores of Lake Esrum
fishing in Lake Ersum is restricted to angling
The lake is located in the eastern part of Jutland
Mossø features rich birdlife and is part of an international bird protection area
Stadil Fjord is Denmark’s fourth largest lake
the Stadil Fjord is not connected to the sea but is a freshwater lake
The lake and its surrounding area is known for its spectacular natural beauty
and the near flat landscape on its shores is composed of reed forests
Stadil Fjord is one of Denmark’s cleanest lakes and offers great conditions for hikers and cyclists
Saltbæk Vig is Denmark’s fifth biggest lake
It is a brackish lake located in West Zealand and was formed as a result of a failed containment project
The area surrounding Saltbæk Vig is home to diverse flora and a variety of bird species

Her Majesty The Queen delivers the New Year Address at Fredensborg Palace this year

On Wednesday the images were two portraits of Her Majesty The Queen taken in the fall and winter of 2019 at Amalienborg
two more portraits of the Queen and her dog have been published
The two last photos are taken in the gardens outside of Fredensborg Castle where Queen Margrethe has been staying
Fredensborg is a castle located on the eastern shore of Lake Esrum in Denmark
It is the Danish Royal Family’s spring and autumn residence
and is often the site of important state visits and events in the Royal Family
It is the most used of the Royal Family’s residences
The pictures have received a mixed response in Denmark with some thinking they are too pompous
Søren Jakobsen told to the Danish newspaper EX: “I know Abrahamsen
He has been a little too honoured for the task because it falls a bit outside of what he usually does.”
Art historian and expert in royal portraits
Thyge Christian Fønss-Lundberg is more positive
He told to the newspaper: “These are some nice pictures
Especially the picture where Margrethe holds the shoulders of Frederik and Christian
we are not used to seeing our queen show great emotions
Per Morten Abrahamsen is best known for his staged photography
which often breaks the frame of the traditional portrait
The portrait series is designed as an interaction between the photographer’s research and proposals as well as the Queen’s own wishes
There will be a completely different celebration of Queen Margrethe’s 80th birthday than planned because of the coronavirus pandemic
The Danish Queen had planned to celebrate the day with pomp and splendour
a reception at Copenhagen City Hall and a private dinner and dance at Fredensborg Palace had been planned
and royals from all over the world were expected to attend
It was announced earlier in March that the grand birthday celebration had been cancelled
thousands of people across Denmark are expected to come together to sing their birthday wishes to their Queen on April 16th while they are also being encouraged to make dashchund hats and special cakes to celebrate with Margrethe II

Sudbury cemented its close partnership with Fredensborg in Denmark this month
when it welcomed foreign visitors to celebrate more than a decade as twinned towns
Sudbury Town Council and the Sudbury Town Twinning Association hosted their Danish counterparts over several days
leading them on a guided tour around the town
as well as visits to the Nethergate Brewery in Long Melford and the Duxford Imperial War Museum
the mayors of both towns then re-signed the twinning charters
which officially link Sudbury Town Council and the Fredensborg municipality
Fredensborg is the third location twinned with Sudbury
The formal connection has resulted in school exchange programmes
sports competitions and other collaborations
vice-chairman of the Sudbury Town Twinning Association
told the Free Press that the partnership had helped to broaden the town’s horizons
as few local people knew much about Denmark compared to other European countries
it has given us a great understanding of different ideas and views
and allowed us to meet people from different backgrounds,” she said
“It has fostered talking and understanding
and it’s so interesting to hear how people in other countries perceive it
I would like to see more groups of all ages get involved
To learn more about the twinning partnerships
The first place of my own I lived in Oslo was Fredensborg
just a stone’s throw from the excitement of Central Oslo
Here’s a look back at my blog post from when I moved in
The weekend was a scorcher with the mercury busting 30 degrees C
I took some time out to get familiar with my new neighbourhood – Fredensborg
Despite only being in Oslo for 5 weeks I have a rough idea about the area
as it’s where I've been mainly hanging out
I need to know the dull stuff like where the shops are
Walk a few steps south and I’m in the city centre, walk over the Eventyrbrua (Bridge of Adventure/Fairytales) and I’m in Grünerløkka
Within a 10-12 minute walk are all the T-Bane (metro) and trikk (tram) lines
plus the Oslo Sentralstasjon (Central Train Station)
so it really is the perfect base from which to explore the city
Apologies in advance for the hipster speak
but the neighbourhood seems pretty “urban rock chic”
I'm around the corner from the Rockefeller gig venue, my local is the rock bar Revolver and I'm just a few minutes walk from Blå where I saw Metronomy
There's also a treehouse theatre in my local park… look
There's a Kiwi shop in my apartment building
but a few minutes away there's a bigger and cheaper Rema 1000
Wendy doesn't like me shopping there because they sponsor Rosenborg
something the size of a standard Tesco is very rare
Just over the bridge in Grünerløkka there's an Expert (store) for geeking out on TVs
digital cameras and surround sound systems
plus tons of nice cafes and arty independent shops selling bric-n-brac & nic-n-nac & things
Something I'm yet to adjust to is the complete shutdown on Sundays in Norway
There's a Joker minimarket just a few minutes' walk away which is open on Sundays
it's expensive but it'll do for those Sunday mornings when nothing other than bacon will do
Originally from the UK, David now lives in Trondheim and was the original founder of Life in Norway back in 2011. He now works as a professional writer on all things Scandinavia
Who or what is Rosenborg and why shouldn’t they be sponsored
They are the Manchester United of Norwegian football and Wendy doesn’t like them 🙂
