The morning after winning his third national title
Willem Greve was already back in the saddle. “My first title was a milestone—a dream come true

the threat of the strike has prompted some passengers to cancel their reservations
BFMTV also reports a 50% increase in SNCF ticket cancellations for May 8
Should we expect a black week from May 5 to 11
A reminder of the facts. At the beginning of April, Sud-Rail was the first union to call a strike, calling on TGV controllers to stop work on Friday May 9, Saturday May 10 and Sunday May 11, and even as early as May 7, thus threatening the May 8 bridge. Then, on April 11, the CGT-Cheminots
with mobilization starting on Monday May 5
While the CGT-Cheminots is calling for " the reopening of negotiations on the overhaul of the traction bonus
Sud-Rail is calling for better-anticipated schedules and an increase in the work bonus
On April 18, Christophe Fanichet, CEO of the SNCF Voyageurs subsidiary, told Le Parisien: " SNCF can't afford a strike " at the risk of passengers " trying out competition
If these strike notices at SNCF turn into a massive mobilization, then the week from May 5 to 11 is likely to be very difficult for travelers. It will be recalled that sales staff, i.e. railwaymen working in stations, are due to stop work for one day, on Monday May 5. The following day, their equipment colleagues will stop work, followed by drivers on May 7. No action is planned for May 8
the day marking the end of the Second World War
there will be a strike by ticket inspectors
SUD-Rail has been joined in its movement by the CNA
considered by many to be very"influential"
On Sunday May 4, 2025, the eve of the start of the movement, Sud-Rail is announcing"very heavy disruptions" from Wednesday May 7 until Sunday May 11, as the union's federal secretary explained on RMC
SNCF Voyageurs CEO Christophe Fanichet said that"traffic will be normal from Monday May 5 to Thursday May 8 on TGVs"
What about public transport in the Paris region? On its website
Transilien SNCF has announced that traffic will be disrupted on several RER and Transilien lines from Monday May 5

Willem Greve and the 13-year-old Highway TN N.O.P
(Eldorado vd Zeshoek x Chellano) stole the show in the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Western European League at Partner Pferd Leipzig in Germany – the 11th leg of the 2024/2025 WEL-season – taking the first World Cup victory of their career
“I am just so honoured to be able to ride such a super-star from Team Nijhof,” Greve said in awe of Highway TN
a stallion he has produced himself from a youngster
Thirteen horse-and-rider combinations – six of them flying the flag for the hosts – cleared their way into the deciding jump-off
where the Mechelen-winner Hans-Dieter Dreher on Elysium (VDL Zirocco Blue x Coronado) took an early lead with a time of 41.55 seconds
Shaving a second off on Dreher’s leading time
set a new standard with their time of 40.52 seconds – a target that those to come could not match
France’s former world number one Simon Delestre and Dexter Fontenis Z (Diarado x Voltaire Pref) were the last to give it a go
slotting into second when crossing the finish line in 41.21 seconds
Zascha Nygaard Lill (DEN) and Noah de Kalvarie (Ustinov x Almox Prints) to fourth and Martin Fuchs (SUI) aboard Conner Jei (Connor x Cosimo) to fifth
my first World Cup win ever,” Greve said afterwards
I had a good start to number one – in Mechelen I started a bit too slow – but now he knew straight away it was game
And then actually I just have to follow him and point to the fences
he is searching for the first distance – he is a freak of a horse.”
but with thirteen in the jump-off it is always just in between; with one down
you can drop down very quick,” the second placed Delestre said
this was his third Grand Prix in a row where he is again on the podium
I can do the same number of strides as the others without any problems
so I tried to stay fast but not stupid fast
It is also important to catch some points.”
really happy with Elysium,” Dreher commented
“He had two super rounds and today I think it was our fastest jump-off together – he made a super job
and we have to make a plan towards the finals.”
With eleven of fourteen legs in the Western European League 2024/2025-season now completed
the series continues in Amsterdam (NED) next week before stopping in Bordeaux (FRA) and Gothenburg (SWE) prior to returning to Basel for the final in April.
Kevin Staut (FRA) remains in the lead in the Western European League
topping the overall standings with 70 points
Hans-Dieter Dreher (GER) has climbed to second with his 66 points
while Robert Whitaker (GBR) sits third with 60
Gregory Wathelet (BEL) fourth with 56 and Pieter Devos (BEL) fifth with 47 points
The top sixteen horse-and-rider combinations at each of the fourteen qualifiers earn points
with the best eighteen from the overall standings in the WEL qualifying for the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Final held in Basel

Be careful if you have to use public transport in the Paris region this week, from May 5 to 11, 2025. Due to a nationwide SNCF strike
traffic is disrupted on several RER and Transilien lines in Paris and the Île-de-France region
with 1 train out of 2 between Nanterre-la-Folie and Villiers-sur-Marne
The RER D
with 2 out of 3 trains between Juvisy and Malesherbes
Four lines will continue to experience disruptions on May 6
While traffic will be"slightly disrupted" on line H (except between Pontoise and Creil)
traffic will be"heavily disrupted" on lines N and V
Passengers are therefore invited to consult train timetables using the route finder or by personalizing their timetable
Disruptions are expected to be even worse on May 7
Transilien SNCF is already predicting "severe disruption" on RER line C
and"very severe disruption" on the whole of line D
For the rest of the traffic forecasts for May 7
“I think his brain is his best asset,” Willem Greve tells World of Showjumping about Highway TN N.O.P
“He just knows what to do and he is very careful.”
Greve and the 13-year-old stallion – owned by Team Nijhof – took their first World Cup-win when topping the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ at Partner Pferd Leipzig in Germany
the 11th leg of the 2024/2025 Western European League-season
The two are no strangers to leading the lap of honours; in 2024
they took a sensational win on home soil in the CSI5* 1.60m Rolex Grand Prix of ‘s-Hertogenbosch
as well as being victorious in the CSI5*-W 1.55m Gothenburg Trophy at Gothenburg Horse Show and the CSI5*-W 1.50m Harry Wouters van den Oudenweijer Prize at Jumping Amsterdam. In 2023
they won the CSIO5* 1.60m Longines Grand Prix of Rotterdam and later that year they were selected to represent Netherlands at the FEI European Championships in Milan
“I got the ride on Highway when he was seven and he has been a winner at every level,” Greve tells
“The question was always how big he would jump in the end
but everything we have asked he has done brilliantly
He has become very consistent and we know each other incredibly well – we are a good team.”
Greve used to ride Highway’s sire Eldorado vd Zeshoek as well
“Highway is a little bit smaller than his father
Eldorado had more scope perhaps but not the last quality and with Highway it is a little bit the other way around – I think he got that from Chellano or Darco
It's been a good match with Eldorado and Highway’s mother Zelana V
Highway and Eldorado are quite alike when it comes to their energy and working mentality.”
“He was always behind Carambole and Zypria S
just like my other star Grandorado,” Greve tells about the years of producing the talented stallion
Highway was always with as a second or third horse with the others
he was in ‘s-Hertogenbosch as the third horse just to do the small classes and he grew into the higher levels like that actually
he has always been very competitive – and always a winner.”
Greve was never sure if Highway would be the one for the biggest tasks
“I always questioned where he would end up – until I asked him the question and he just answered it perfectly
Horses can do amazing things for us if the mentality is there; if they want to do it and you give them time so that they have full confidence and faith in their rider.”
Greve has worked with Team Nijhof for the past 13 years
“Our history goes really far back,” he explains
“My father used to own stallions with Nijhof Senior
and as an example found Voltaire together in Germany when he was only a yearling
I help their riders and we do a bit of business
and as we say in Holland ‘the knife cuts on two sides’: I'm an asset for their business and they are a plus for my career
You don't get so many horses like Highway and I am are very lucky to have him.”
While Leipzig turned out victorious for Greve
the World Cup-leg in Amsterdam did not go as well
but in Bordeaux the Dutch rider once again picked up points – this time finishing third with Grandorado TN N.O.P.
“Leipzig was actually a show in preparation for Amsterdam,” Greve explains
“Highway jumped the qualifier really nice and smooth
and then in the World Cup he jumped a really beautiful clear round
he was perfectly with me from the beginning to the end.”
“I hope Leipzig was not the last World Cup win for us,” Greve smiles
“It's something I am proud of; that I at least won a World Cup once in my life – and I hope more will come
and it's something I had on my bucket list so it's nice to have done it now
I think I still might need a few more points to make it to the final
but we have to see step by step and either plan towards the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Final in Basel or towards the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.”

The Netherland’s Willem Greve has taken over the reins on Impian D (VDL Bubalu x Lux Z
The 12-year-old stallion has been hugely successful with Greve’s compatriot Henk Frederiks: Last year
the two were part of the winning Dutch team at CSIO3* Budapest (HUN)
CSIO4* Sopot (POL) and CSIO3* Kronenberg (NED) – jumping double clear on three of the four occasions
Frederiks suffered a fall during the first week of December last year – sustaining fractions to his spine and skull
“I was at a local show with one of my youngsters and had a bad fall,” he tells World of Showjumping
“I had a couple of terrible weeks to be honest
this is an injury that we need to take time for – it's not something I can rush
I will need from three to six months to recover
I am doing my best and working hard to get my muscles ready
but everything needs to be 100% healed before I can get back in the saddle.”
Impian has been the only horse for the higher levels
“All my other horses are youngsters,” he explains
He was feeling great just before my accident
and I was really looking forward to the 2025-season
we had a conversation with his owners and breeders – the Doorn-family
we decided to ask if Willem – who is a very good colleague
and in my opinion one of the best riders in the world – if he would be interested in taking over the ride while I recover.”
had a great feeling and the two made their first appearance together at the KWPN stallion approvals in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (NED) last weekend
“It was impressive to watch,” Frederiks says
“I'm convinced that Impian is going to do well with Willem. We are looking forward to see if Impian is going to spend the rest of his career with Willem
he has been the only horse that I could compete at the higher-level shows
and it's very hard to do that with just one horse
and Impian’s career is more important than my own
I'm more than happy to see Impian continue his career with him
and I'm proud of Willem – he is a wonderful colleague and friend
He has such a nice string of horses at the moment
and that is going to benefit Impian as well
Impian is the best horse I have ever ridden
and he really deserves to be at the biggest stages.”
The Dutch Equestrian Federation has announced that their reserve combination Kim Emmen and Imagine (Cassini Gold x Lord Z) will replace Willem Greve and Grandorado TN (Eldorado vd Zeshoek x Carolus II) in Thursday’s Olympic team qualifier in Versailles
The decision was made following Wednesday evening’s training session at the equestrian Olympic venue
where the jumpers tested the main ring for the first time this week
Emmen will compete alongside Maikel van der Vleuten and Beauville Z (Bustique x Jumpy des Fontaines) as well as Harrie Smolders and Uricas v/d Kattevennen (Uriko x Cassini I).

Christian Ditlev Frederik, Greve (count) Reventlow (born March 11, 1748, Copenhagen, Den.—died Oct. 11, 1827, Lolland) was a Danish state official whose agrarian reforms led to the liberation of the peasantry in Denmark
In 1784 he was named head of the Rentekammer (department of finance)
The resulting reforms in 1787 and 1788 led to the end of adscription
the legal bond between Danish peasants and the estate of their birth
Later measures of Reventlow led to clearly defined terms of peasant service on the large estates
Reventlow retired from public service in 1813 after being dismissed from his post

With expert commentary from Harrie Smolders
and Maikel van der Vleuten took part in the horse swap today
this event was reintroduced into the program of 's-Hertogenbosch
Christian Kukuk's Cupido (Calmando) was the best horse of the competition
The riders jumped a total of four rounds: once on their own horse and then on each other's horses
had asked all the riders for information about the horses beforehand
Harrie Smolders jokingly called him Willem "Google" Greve
Willem Greve ultimately won with Hadewyn van 't Ravennest (Comme Il Faut)
The pair stayed ahead of Philipp Weishaupt with Cupido (Calmando)
completed the top three in the saddle of Calizi (Cellestial)
Willem Greve won the first HeadFirst Group Prize - Best of Champions
"This class was pure promotion for our sport," said Greve afterward
"All riders were extremely focused on getting the best out of each other's horse
I found the micro feedback from Jeroen Dubbeldam and Harrie Smolders a real added value!"
"This class was a reflection of what we try to do every day
We discover new horses every day and try to understand them
We only had 3 minutes to get to know the horse
but it was actually quite fun!" the Dutchman continues
'horsemanship' is the way you approach the horses and how you try to get the best out of each horse
Every rider did a fantastic job during the horse swap."
groom Richie is working closely with Greve
we have a few other horses that aren't here
The team that takes care of those horses at the stable is extremely important
Everyone contributes to the success of a horse-rider combination
you only have 1.5 to 2 minutes in the ring
it's impossible to get the best out of that short time span
What I really appreciate is that I have had almost no changes in my team over the past 15 years
Thursday night at the 2025-edition of The Dutch Masters in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (NED) saw four champions – the Dutch Champion Willem Greve (NED) on Hadewyn van’T Ravennest (Comme Il Faut x Carrico)
the 2023 European Vice-Champion Philipp Weishaupt (GER) on Cupido 130 (Calmando 3 x Stakkato)
the double World Champion and current world number one Henrik von Eckermann (SWE) on Calizi (Cellestial x Stakkatol) and the 2024 Olympic bronze medallist Maikel van der Vleuten (NED) on Lalique (Berlin x Palm S) – bring back the traditional horse rotation in the HeadFirst Group Prize – Best of Champions
Similar to the format formerly seen between the final four at the World Championships
the four riders jumped a round on each other’s horses
taking three minutes and two jumps to get to know the horses before jumping a course of eight fences
von Eckermann and Weishaupt had all gathered a score of four penalties
and the win was decided in a jump-off on their own horses
While Greve and Hadewyn van’T Ravennest emerged as the winners and took the title Best of Champions
Cupido 130 and Lalique both finished the evening without touching a pole
“We were for sure curious about what was going to happen
because this class was not existing in our sport anymore – although lot of riders regret that,” Jeroen Dubbeldam
“We talked a little bit tonight if this should come back to the World Championship formula again
but I do think it is still an interesting class to have
This way you can also explain a lot to the crowd
I think we saw a lot of horsemanship and horses almost improving in their rounds
“I think it was amazingly nice to watch,” the happy winner said
trying to learn from each other – it was great sport
and enjoyed riding the other’s horses and figure them out in a few minutes.”
Dealing with metastases is one of the major challenges of cancer therapy
More than 90 percent of deaths caused by cancer are linked to metastases
Understanding the conditions that cause cancer metastases and how these move through the body is key to developing new approaches to cancer treatment
as cancer is also subject to the laws of physics
In honour of their groundbreaking insights into the movement of tumour cells
and the biophysicists Professor Dr Jochen Guck
and Professor Dr Josef Käs are receiving the 2024 Greve Prize from the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina
is donated by the Helmut and Hannelore Greve Foundation for Science
“Studying the behaviour of tumour cells from the perspective of physics and linking it to direct insights gained from medical institutions has the potential to develop completely new means of treating cancer.”
The potential for cancer treatment is already apparent with respect to breast cancer
Whether the cancer has metastasised or not is key in determining the success of therapies
it has not been possible to accurately predict when a tumour forms metastases
working together with Professor Dr Axel Niendorf (Hamburg/Germany)
are significantly better at indicating a tumour’s potential to metastasise
They have done so using biophysical concepts
the central idea of which – that metastasising cancer cells must be softer – Jochen Guck played an important role in developing
In order to release themselves from the original tumour and move through the human body
allowing the cancer cell aggregate to become fluid
In the study carried out by Käs and Aktas together with Axel Niendorf
the scientists identified the histological characteristics of the cancer cells that become fluid: they were longer and had deformed cell nuclei
allowing them to “squeeze” through neighbouring tissue
Their study of more than 1,000 breast cancer patients offers a strong indication that these deformed cell and nuclei forms can be used as a reliable marker for a cancer’s aggressiveness
and to predict a tumour’s potential to metastasise
This could permit breast cancer treatments to be more individually tailored to patients
Guck developed a high-throughput method to measure the deformability of cells (real-time deformability cytometry
This method is particularly suited to finding substances that can change cancer cell mechanics to prevent metastases
physician Professor Dr Bahriye Aktas (photo: Stefan Straube | UKL)
biophysicists Professor Dr Jochen Guck (photo: private)
biophysicists Professor Dr Josef Käs (photo: Swen Reichhold | University of Leipzig)
Bahriye Aktas (born in 1975) is Professor of Gynaecology at the University of Leipzig and Director of the Department of Gynaecology at the Leipzig Medical Center
Aktas studied medicine at the Justus Liebig University Gießen/Germany
She completed her medical training as a gynaecologist and obstetrician at the University Hospital Essen/Germany
and was appointed Associate Professor in 2017
That year she switched to the University of Leipzig
her focus is on minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgery
which is used for gentler and precise operations with improved chances of healing
and she also has a particular interest in surgery for cancer treatment
She and her predecessor have helped to globally establish new operation methods that take into account how a tumour spreads
Jochen Guck (born in 1973) studied physics in Würzburg/Germany and obtained his doctorate at the University of Texas in Austin/USA under Josef Käs
They jointly developed tools to investigate cell mechanics (optical cell stretcher)
Following research stays at the University of Leipzig and the University of Cambridge/UK
in 2012 Guck was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship of Cellular Machines at the Biotechnology Centre of the Technical University of Dresden/Germany and was Senior Director there
Since 2018 he has been Director at the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Light and
Professor of Biological Optomechanics at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg
He has developed further photonic and biophysical instruments
including real-time deformability cytometry
These form the basis for many partnerships with medical institutions in Erlangen and at the new Max Planck Centre for Physics and Medicine (MPZPM)
Josef Käs (born in 1961) is Head of the Soft Matter Physics Division at the University of Leipzig’s Peter Debye Institute for Soft Matter Physics
He studied physics at Columbia University in New York/USA and at the Technical University of Munich/Germany
After holding a professorship at the University of Texas in Austin
One of his key research areas concerns the physical properties of cancer cells
He discovered how cancer cells can vary their degree of solidity and fluidity and thus achieved a paradigmatic shift in the understanding of tumour mechanics
The German National Academy of Science Leopoldina’s Greve Prize is awarded to scientists or research teams that work at German universities
The prize is awarded every two years and honours outstanding research achievements in the natural sciences/medicine and engineering sciences
the topic is the foundations of new cancer therapies

Abandoning Chevron may change government incentives
I commend Adam J. White on his characteristically thoughtful, judicious essay
I take this opportunity to pursue my dear friend’s premises—unstated
but obvious—a bit further and perhaps to an end that may be grimmer than Adam lets on
He expresses a guarded hope that Chevron’s demise will be conducive to “good
constitutional administration.” That is possible
and that of a gigantic Chevron literature I’ve never bothered to read—is that rules and rule changes rattle through institutions
Not that Congress or agencies necessarily have any great regard for judicially imposed rules or rule-conforming behavior: that would be a very odd presumption vis-à-vis legislators with power to make the rules
or with respect to the folks who currently run the FTC or the EPA
It’s rather a matter of marginal incentives
for good but mostly for ill encourages certain forms of (executive
Evasion. “Show me the incentives, and I’ll show you the outcome,” the late Charlie Munger famously averred
Take the most direct rule-to-incentives-to-outcome connection: court to agency
In response to stricter legal oversight the agency does—what
we assume the agency wants to protect its programs and agenda against judicial review and reversal (because it wants to protect its turf
or because congressional and private constituencies demand that course
But even that isn’t necessarily true under all conditions
the EPA in particular has often sought to put itself under court orders in lawsuits instigated by advocacy groups
the better to insulate itself against congressional and industry opposition
Chevron’s demise might well encourage that m.o
(“Sorry: here at the EEOC and the Office for Civil Rights
having been sued by credible constituencies spanning half the alphabet
we must go the full Bostock.”) Any which way
the outcome has little to do with the train from rule to incentives to institutional conduct
and everything to do with the political constellations of the day
agencies may respond to tighter judicial controls by improving their product by supplying reasoned legal analysis and solid evidence (though perhaps
they may further immunize their actions against judicial control
An agency may bludgeon regulated parties into settlements that then shape industry behavior: that’s the SEC’s and the CFPB’s model
It may propose rules that would hardly pass judicial muster but nonetheless compel industries with long investment horizons to comply in the here and now
on the off chance that the rule just might survive: that’s the EPA’s model
An agency may never commit a reviewable act and instead publish “guidances” or “dear colleague” letters: that’s the FDA
All those forms of agency conduct are common even under Chevron’s forgiving regime. Tighten judicial oversight: the result may well be yet more regulatory dark matter
We tend to think in aggregate institutional terms: “the Congress,” “the Executive,” “the Judiciary.” Yet none of them is a unitary actor
Even the Administrative Procedure Act’s “agencies” aren’t unitary actors: they have heads
All the individual actors have incentives of their own
In a particularly insightful part of his essay
Adam brings that thought to bear on courts and agencies
will force courts to think harder about long-submerged questions
do courts defer when they burble about an agency’s “expertise” or (on many Chevron accounts) the agency’s greater “democratic accountability,” relative to independent courts
what would that mean for agencies’ internal operations
Does an agency head actually have to do the interpreting
or scrutinize “expertise” that may be mere pretext for already-made decisions
Those questions point back to my earlier point: agencies might respond by adopting more rule-conforming modes of operation
or by further rewarding internal actors who are good at producing regulatory dark matter that evades judicial review altogether
I have everything riding on a jurisprudence that reflects a Hamiltonian realism about politics without romance
attends Adam’s fond hope that Chevron’s demise might at last spur congressional intervention
If agency regs go down in courts that have ceased to defer to agency interpretations of gaseous
Congress—the theory goes—can no longer paper over disagreements by delegating the real rulemaking power to agencies
The hope is that more stringent judicial review will incentivize Congress to legislate
Perhaps so; and Adam notes—correctly, to my mind—that Chevron’s demise may well come to be accompanied by a judicial nondelegation doctrine with teeth. (It already exists in the form of the “major question” doctrine.) Still, I deem this a case of a failure to disaggregate. The Constitution may well envision a “collective Congress.” But that body—a deliberate
structured body that responds coherently to a changed legal and institutional environment—has long ceased to exist
and we can be very confident of the one incentive that trumps all others: reelection
Legislators who act otherwise won’t be legislators for long
Those who put a premium on deliberation and compromise will quit and
the” hydraulic forces” (Adam’s term) of increased judicial oversight will have to play out elsewhere
One possible result is simply less law and less roving agency authority
we may see yet more direct White House control: the President is not an “agency,” and therefore exempt from APA review
The only certainty is continued congressional incapacity
Most of the foregoing will meet with Adam’s vehement agreement; he acknowledges many of the difficulties in his essay
I have been unfair to Adam and lapsed into my usual mode of discourse: kvetching
which may or may not find Adam’s approbation
the focus on “rules and incentives” is the right way to think about the administrative state
But the incentives in this setting are quite multifaceted and complex; and among them is the incentive for wayward
In important opinions and law review articles
Williams arrticulated the basic calculus: judges should push hard on the law
but not to the point of further incentivizing the very behavior that the rules are meant to block
That insight is worth a thought in the Chevron context
Two, the time may have come to think seriously about Administrative Law Without Congress
as Ashley Parrish and I put it some years ago in a provocatively titled article
(We may decide to update that piece because agency behavior has since become way worse.) The thought is heterodox
“The will of the Congress must prevail”: that is the irreducible premise of public law since the New Deal—of Erie Railroad (1938)
and of the administrative law that Felix Frankfurter and the geniuses of the Legal Process school bequeathed us
it is also the key premise of (drumroll) Chevron—and (drumroll again) of the “textualist” jurisprudence that finds fault with Chevron
I find that premise—courts as the legislature’s handmaiden; judges as nudges of detailed legislation—very problematic
“It is not with a view to infractions of the constitution only” that we want to have an independent judiciary
That judiciary also plays an essential role in “mitigating the severity and confining the operation” of “unjust and partial laws,” prompted by “ill humours in the society.” While such judicial interventions will “displease those whose sinister expectations they may disappoint
they must command the esteem and applause of all the virtuous and disinterested.”

Home side rider Willem Greve topped the horse swap class results in ’s-Hertogenbosch tonight
the Dutch national champion beating representatives of the reigning medallists in all three senior championships
the HeadFirst Group Prize – Best of Champions
re-created the format used in the final of the World Championships until 2014
where four riders each jump a round on each other’s horses
With the riders warming up each mount in the ring and commentary and interviews by 2014 world champion Jeroen Dubbeldam plus top rider Harrie Smolders
it made for a fascinating evening for the crowd at the Dutch Masters show
Willem, second-placed Philipp Weishaupt (European individual silver medallist) and third-placed Henrik von Eckermann
all sat on four faults after the initial rounds and had to jump off their own horses to settle the placings
The winner’s ride was Isabel de Rijcker’s Hadewyn Van’t Ravennest, Philipp piloted Madeleine Winter-Schulze’s Cupido 130 and Henrik put Dufour Stables AG’s Calizi into the competition. Fourth-placed Maikel van der Vleuten
the Olympic individual bronze medallist from Paris
brought forward Gabriela Roger Ibars’ Lalique
“Mine was a bit fresh – she jumped best in the last round with Maikel
but also she gets a bit tense and she doesn’t know this ring but she handled it well
but you can feel that she has enormous motivation and drive
The first impression of Cupido was a big horse and a bit slow
you didn’t expect him to have such a quick reflex – the feeling was very comfortable and careful
In the jump-off, Willem finished in 30.75sec to beat Philipp into second on 31.14sec. Henrik – who is riding in a hand brace after incurring an injury in a fall – took a risk to fence two and had it down for third
The three riders who jumped off all incurred four faults in the initial rounds on the same horse
the 10-year-old mare took the front bar off the oxer out of the double at fence 6b
but then the mare hit the white plank that topped fence seven
Philipp explained: “I watched Willem go – he came a bit long and open to the combination and it got a bit short for him
I tried to give her the room she needed in the combination
but it meant I had to squeeze a bit to the oxer out
Henrik jumped the mare third and she just had a light touch on the same plank
“I tried to help her with the plank and maybe tried to help her too much and disturbed her instead,” he said
“I should have trusted her quality and maybe she’d have jumped it better.”
Philipp and Henrik all went clear on all three of the other horses in the initial rounds
Maikel was last to jump Hadewyn Van’t Ravennest and the first to go clear on the horse
He was also clear on his own Lalique and on Philipp’s Cupido 130
scuppered his chances when he had eight faults
knocking the upright out of the double at 4b and the final fence
Henrik said: “She’s not an easy horse in that you need to know her a little bit
if you squeeze a little too much in the wrong moment
Maybe Maikel should have stayed upright a little more and not gone too early [with his body before the fences]
You have to do it with your seat and body as she’s very sensitive to your legs and hand.”
Both Cupido 130 and Lalique jumped clear with every rider and they were awarded best horse sashes
Willem said: “I think it was unbelievable publicity for our unbelievable sport
Harrie and Jeroen did an amazing job to give some insight
but in a way that not only professionals can understand
but also people at home in the living room
so they could really get interested in how beautiful but also difficult our sport is
“I think we’ve seen four great horses tonight with four great horsemen and this was unbelievable PR for our sport.”
The Dutch federation today announced the Olympic teams for Paris 2024
the Dutch riders will be introduced together with their national coach
Harrie Smolders and Maikel van der Vleuten will go to the City of Light
Kim Emmen joins the male trio led by Jos Lansink as reserve rider
you need a horse that doesn't look left or right and a rider who doesn't either and
Kim rode a strong first round in the Nations Cup in Rotterdam and continued that form into the Grand Prix
where she was really under pressure to show herself
She did that super," Lansink justified his choice for the 29-year-old rider
Their Olympic competition is scheduled from August 1 to 6
National coach Jos Lansink is looking forward to the battle in Paris
"The first three riders were of course already fixed in my mind for some time
They also have the advantage of having a very good second horse at their disposal
With only three riders in a team it shouldn't be against us
In Rotterdam you saw how close everything was
but in a Nations Cup you need clear rounds otherwise you don't compete
I am really very happy with these four combinations
they are real championship riders with very good horses."
"We are definitely going for a medal with this competitive team
but in my opinion we are not among the favorites," Harrie Smolders spoke
The dressage riders will compete for medals from July 30 to August 4
Dressage team coach Patrick van der Meer says of the composition of his team
"I am super proud of the performances the riders and horses delivered during the observation competitions
It was all very close together and it is a luxury position that we have such a good group."
"We clearly stated in advance that the NK and CHIO Rotterdam were the observation competitions for this year
If you add up the results you arrive at this order
but also if you look at the form and follow your feeling
At CHIO Rotterdam we got a lot of compliments on the Dutch performance
I am going to do everything I can to maintain the good form of the team so that everyone can see in Paris what the Dutch dressage team is capable of," said national coach Patrick van der Meer
The eventing riders kick off the equestrian competition in Paris
"I'm looking forward to going to Paris with these four riders."
"My goal -and mission- is to achieve a top 6-8 ranking with the team and I am confident that these riders can do that
The competitions we have participated in in preparation have ensured that we travel to Paris very well prepared
Horses and riders have shown they can do it," spoke national coach Andrew Heffernan

When I received the news that I would cover a split between the US-based Häxanu and the Sweden-based Greve for review
I was immensely enthusiastic about it as I’ve always had high expectations of the craftsmanship of both Black Metal acts– all-round mystical
Häxanu is renowned for their acclaimed second full-length
which presents melodic Black Metal tunes that have a strong emphasis on the macabre
Greve: I’ve been digging Nordarikets strid for quite some time
and I indeed have always been some sort of a geek when it comes to the Swedish extreme metal scene
to me Swartadauþuz – whom I’ve always seen as a man of a thousand projects – always comes up with mesmerizing surprises beyond expectations on all his projects
when Purity Through Fire collaborated with Amor Fati Productions on the release of a split between those two
I meticulously observed how far they could take the old-school Black Metal undertones on a modern attitude into the next level
they appear to be presenting a violent fury which also appears to be triumphant
these first four tracks of the record presented could also be suitable as a soundtrack for Kaurismäki’s darker sides of crime and thriller movies
While the opener “Mercy” tends to be calmer in rhythms
building up a profound ancient Black Metal nuance
soul-crushing side that Häxanu has to offer on the closing track “The Winged Chalice.”
I can automatically discern from the beginning that their materials are heavily inspired by the grand second wave Black Metal movement
as they have previously presented on Nordarikets strid as well
Incorporating vicious aggressions that are also symphonic
it’s almost like they’re inviting us into a journey of grimace into the infernal underworld
Not everyone can bear with the intensity that Greve offers as the purest form of their atmospheric
but the ones who do sure will genuinely enjoy this well-crafted dark sonic journey
this split record is giving the nuance of a blend between Sargeist and Havukruunu – savagely profound and full of rage
but also melancholic and cinematic at times
As many as three of the eight combinations in the jump-off of the CSI5*-W 1.55m Gothenburg Trophy were under the Dutch flag
One of them even managed to win the main event on Saturday
Willem Greve and the 12-year-old Highway TN N.O.P
was treated to an extremely exciting jump-off in the CSI5*-W 1.55m class
Only three combinations could leave the jumps untouched in the shortened course
In the saddle of the Eldorado vd Zeshoek son
Peder Fredricson (SWE) was surpassed in front of his own audience and finished second with Alcapone des Carmille
The offspring of Diamant de Semilly crossed the finish line in 34.51s
The bronze also went to Dutch hands and was for Kim Emmen (NED) with the 11-year-old KWPN gelding Inflame Go (Namelus R)
Yuri Mansur (BRA) had the fastest time in the saddle of Vitiki (Valentino) but a jumping fault of the 16-year-old gelding left them with the fourth place
Dutchman Lars Kersten rounded off the top five with the 10-year-old stallion Funky Fred Marienshof Z

Glacial lakes are increasing in number and extent under a warming climate
Despite demand for lake monitoring and understanding outburst mechanisms
studies of large outburst events are sparse
a large proglacial lake in Chilean Patagonia
the lake level dropped by 18.3 ± 1.2 m and the area decreased by 14.5 ± 0.02 km2
The total water discharge was 3.7 ± 0.2 km3
which is one of the largest glacial lake outbursts ever reported in satellite era
Satellite data indicated the collapse of a bump near the lake outlet triggered the event
by initiating erosion of the bank and bed of the outlet stream
Satellite gravimetry captured a signal of the event
although the magnitude of the corresponding mass change was inconsistent with the drained water mass
Our study demonstrated the potential for observing lake outburst using satellite imagery
further understanding of outburst mechanism and long-term monitoring of glacial lakes are required to manage hazards in mountainous regions
In April 2020, we observed a sudden retreat of the shoreline of Lago Greve, an extraordinarily large proglacial lake in Patagonia (Fig. 1)
Additional analyses with several types of satellite data indicated the release of a large amount of water within a short time period
as well as its impact on the gravity field
We also investigate the mechanism of drainage based on satellite imagery and DEMs
The data illustrates the details of a largest glacial lake outburst event observed by satellite to date
water flows through fjords for a distance of ~130 km before entering into the Pacific Ocean
a Area and b water level of Lago Greve from 28 September 2016 to 1st November 2020. Lake levels indicated by squares were measured by DEMs, while those indicated by circles were obtained by ICESat-2. Gray shaded area indicates the approximate period of the lake drainage event (from 9 April to 29 July 2020). Errorbars represent uncertainty of measurement.
The images were acquired by Landsat-8, Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 for the locations indicated by the magenta boxes in Fig. 1a
The acquisition dates are (a and e) 8 April 2020
Cyan and yellow lines in a–d indicate the outlet stream as observed on the optical images on 8 April and 5 May
The blue and orange lines are the same for the lake margin
The outbursts were triggered by flotation of the ice dam
which lead to rapid water discharge of 2.6–3.4 Gt
The water volume drained from Lago Greve is comparable to those reported for the previously observed large GLOF events
Regions highlighted in red in a are where surface elevation decreased by >30 m between 11–22 February 2000 and 21 July 2020
Yellow boxes in a and b show the regions enlarged in c and d
Surface elevation near the outlet of Lago Greve based on e SRTM-DEM (February 2000) and f WV-DEM (21 July 2020)
Dashed and solid curves indicate the flowlines of the stream before and after the event
g Surface elevation along the stream before (X-Z-X’ in e) and h after the event (X- Z’-X’)
which is approximately equal to the change in the lake surface elevation after the lake drainage
We conclude that the collapse of the bump triggered the change in the flow path of the stream
which resulted in the erosion of the valley and the drainage of lakewater
it is likely that the region was mantled with glacial deposits as well as sediments carried by lakewater
The studied event can be regarded as such a delayed response to the changing climate
a Mass changes in the GRACE mascon solution summed over areas within 200, 300, and 400 km from the lake. Cyan curves are the best-fit time series assuming Eq. 2
RMSEs of the model are shown by the shading around the curves
Red and magenta curves are results of the regression assuming an additional mass loss event that occurred at a constant rate from 8 April to 29 July 2020 (gray shaded band)
b–d shows the close-up view of the parts after 2019
e Distribution of mass changes from March to August
Regions within blue curves indicate the Patagonia Icefields
The white dot indicates the location of Lago Greve
Solid curves indicate the regions within 200
the observed mass loss signals are most likely due to the observed discharge of lakewater from Lago Greve in 2020
we conclude that the satellite gravimetry is able to detect large-scale lake outburst events
but care should be taken for quantification of the water discharge
The importance of GRACE in studying GLOF would be increased if mascon solution is adapted for localized events
speed change of the glaciers is expected after the outburst of Lago Grave
the drop in the lake level should affect the frequency and magnitude of calving
continuing to monitor the glaciers in the future is a unique opportunity to investigate the dynamics and frontal ablation of freshwater calving glaciers
we reported an outburst of Lago Greve in Patagonia
one of the largest glacial lakes in the world
Satellite data showed abrupt lake drainage between 9 and 19 April 2020 and lakewater discharge from April to July 2020
lake area decreased by 14.5 ± 0.02 km2 and the water level dropped by 18.3 ± 1.2 m
Water volume released from the lake was 3.7 ± 0.2 km3 (3.7 ± 0.2 Gt)
which indicates the event is among the largest GLOFs ever reported
The outburst was triggered by the collapse of a bump near the lake outlet and subsequent change in the flow path of the outlet stream
This event activated the erosion of the bank and the bed of the stream
resulting in lakewater drainage through a deepened valley
The event was also detected by the gravity field observed by the GRACE/GRACE-FO mascon solution
The GRACE data largely overestimate the volume of water release because its spatial resolution is not sufficient for the GLOF event
care should be taken when mascon solution is used to quantify the magnitude of a lake outburst
NDWI is commonly used to detect water bodies in satellite images
Water surface elevation of Lago Greve was measured from 28 September 2016 to 1st November 2020 with intervals of five days to six months
based on satellite laser altimetry and DEMs
Vertical offsets of the DEMs against the altimetry data were corrected by comparing lake-surface elevation from the DEMs with those obtained by altimetry within seven days
The mean difference from the altimetry data (+2.5 m for SRTM-DEM and −1.4 m for WV-DEM) was used for the correction of the DEM derived lake level
Data during the drainage period was excluded from the offset evaluation because the water level change in seven days was too large
The SRTM-DEM was used for the period before the drainage event (from September 2016 to April 2020)
whereas the WV-DEM was used after the event (from April to November 2020)
The DEMs were used also for investigation of the terrain near the outlet of the lake
We modeled the mascon time-series with a function composed of linear
and k1–8 are coefficients estimated by the least-squares method
We also compared the spatial distribution of mascon in March and August 2020
the data sets were corrected for mean differences between March and August observed from 2002–2019
