Kentucky is moving forward with its plan to create its own office of government efficiency
Senate Bill 257 unanimously passed out of a Senate committee on Monday
PADUCAH — Kentucky is moving forward with its plan to create its own office of government efficiency
mirroring the new Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency
A similar resolution is also filed in the state house and is co-sponsored by a local state representative
Kim Holloway said the goal is to identify areas of potential savings and improvements
KOGE would be a task force monitoring the executive branch
Holloway said it's a step above the work the legislature is already doing
“The House Majority caucus has been applying this philosophy to every reform modernization it has tackled since 2017
but rarely are they reviewed for effectiveness,” Holloway said
Holloway said the KOGE task force would look into several state agencies like the departments of education
the public protection cabinet and others working under Gov
There's concern that KOGE will adopt the same practices as its national counterpart
The national Department of Government Efficiency is under fire for its money saving measures
DOGE is responsible for cutting several federal programs and laying off hundreds of thousands of employees
Holloway said KOGE wouldn't be nearly as aggressive
“The overall goal is not to slash programs just for the sake of slashing them… It is certainly not my intent
and certainly not the other co-sponsors' intent to leave Kentuckians hanging and leave them without the services that they need
We just want to make sure that we have put all of their money to good use,” Holloway said
Local 6 asked Holloway why this new department was necessary in Kentucky
considering the general fund surplus has exceeded $1 billion for four years in a row
Holloway agrees that the commonwealth is doing very well economically
but she said the job of ensuring taxpayer money is spent properly is never finished
the Kentucky Office of Government Efficiency would take effect July 1

Since originality is dead and redundancy is in—Kentucky has been quick to join the list of states mirroring the new, and legally questionable, Department of Governmental Efficiency or DOGE at the state level
The proposed Kentucky Senate Bill 257 (SB 257) aims to establish the Office of Government Efficiency within the Auditor of Public Accounts
tasked with evaluating and recommending improvements to the efficiency
and performance of state government agencies
Aiming to cut waste and be more efficient is good
I am annoyingly known to be very efficient with how much I have to talk
aiming for fewer words because I don’t love hearing my own voice
I also have had relationships struggle because of my incessant need to be efficient…like looking up the EXACT time to head to dinner based on traffic patterns– so far be it from me to criticize anyone wanting to work at efficiency
doesn’t factor in are the possible inadvertent negative impacts on marginalized groups
including LGBTQ individuals and people of color
when the costs start getting cut—stuff for people who are of the lesser regarded class
Efficiency initiatives often lead to budget cuts or restructuring of programs deemed non-essential
Services specifically supporting marginalized communities
such as LGBTQ health programs or minority outreach initiatives
might be at risk if they are not prioritized
thereby reducing access to critical resources for these populations
A primary focus on cost-cutting may also neglect to factor in the importance of equity
that word some people are now trying to paint as a negative when really it is anything but
A valid concern with KOGE is how it would handle programs and services designed to address systemic disparities which pose a risk of being undervalued if their benefits are not immediately quantifiable in economic terms
potentially exacerbating existing inequalities
without explicit inclusion of diverse perspectives in the evaluation process
the unique needs of marginalized groups might be overlooked
This oversight can result in recommendations that do not account for the challenges faced by these communities
leading to policies that are not inclusive
or queer and laying them out for more scrutiny—what happens with an agency tasked with protecting people who are discriminated against for being a woman
Does KOGE make it easier to fire or choose to not hire a queer or Black applicant
the chilling effect on the work of an agency can be pretty severe
this can lead to increased unemployment among populations already facing employment challenges
Kentucky rarely leads on things outside of bourbon
The desire to be one of the first states to emulate DOGE at the state level is befuddling
State legislatures already have sweeping authority to monitor and provide oversight of the same things KOGE seeks to address
Does it have a cool name that gets a tweet
but the purpose can be carried out without endangering vital services to marginalized communities
isn’t it super-efficient to have multiple offices doing the same thing

A subsidiary of the pharmaceutical company will invest some $220 million to construct a factory at an existing site in Denmark
A subsidiary of Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk is investing 1.5 billion Danish kroner
to build a new factory at an existing site in Køge
a small seaside town about 25 miles southwest of Copenhagen
The facility will span some 8,000 square meters and support drug production and storage as well as contain office and laboratory space
It’s being built on land Novo’s Pharmatech unit purchased in March 2023
“This is the largest investment in Novo Nordisk Pharmatech’s 75-year history,” said Ulla Grove Krogsgaard Thomsen, the unit’s head, in an Aug. 16 statement
we are expanding our production to ensure an even more robust and reliable delivery of our products.”
In investing huge sums into manufacturing, Novo is keeping in step with rival Eli Lilly, which is also expanding production of its obesity and diabetes drugs Zepbound and Mounjaro as fast as it can
The Køge site is a relatively small addition
The facility is expected to be ready for production by 2027

A strange and unsettling event unfolded near Copenhagen
Around 20 large drones were seen flying in formation over the busy harbor of Køge
a peaceful port city just south of the capital
Eyewitnesses were shocked when the drones seemed to rise directly from the water
flying in a coordinated pattern before disappearing over the bay
The Danish authorities have confirmed the drones were hovering near the marina
and the incident has raised alarms across the country
These drones did not have permission to fly in Danish airspace
Denmark has strict laws regarding drone use
especially in public areas and near critical infrastructure
The unauthorized flight of these drones is a serious violation of the country’s rules
When local police investigated the situation
they were surprised by the drones’ behavior
Unlike the typical recreational drones seen in many areas
and seemed to operate as if they were part of a much bigger plan
a special unit tasked with investigating matters of national security
The department is now working to find out where these drones came from
Although there have been no reports of injuries or damage
the authorities are concerned about the unusual nature of the drones and their unauthorized flights
The drones spotted in Denmark are not the first of their kind
there were reports of similar incidents in New Jersey
Residents there also saw large drones flying in coordinated groups
emerging from the Atlantic Ocean and heading inland
These drones were also described as much larger than usual
operating in a way that suggested they were part of a planned mission rather than random flights

but the origin of these drones remains a mystery
No one has been able to explain how they were able to appear from the ocean or why they were moving toward sensitive areas like military bases and airports
The similarities between the incidents in Denmark and New Jersey
particularly the way the drones appeared from the water and flew in formation
have raised many questions about whether these sightings are linked
The strange nature of these drone sightings has led to even more troubling concerns
An investigation into recent events has suggested that these drones may be connected to a larger
Some reports claim that advanced drone technology
including the use of drones that can carry very heavy payloads
These drones could potentially be used for surveillance or even carry out attacks
The possibility that these drones are part of a bigger plan involving sophisticated technology is worrying for many
If these drones are indeed part of a larger effort
they could represent a new type of warfare
one that uses technology to strike at vulnerable targets without warning
and carry out missions without being detected by traditional security measures is a serious challenge for modern defense systems
The Danish police and intelligence services are continuing their investigation into the mystery of the drones near Køge
the public remains uncertain about the true nature of these drones
and the authorities are working to piece together more information
Whether these incidents are isolated or part of something larger
the unusual behavior of the drones and the unexplained nature of their appearance have created a sense of unease among both the people of Denmark and the global community

About 20 drones were spotted over the port of Køge in Denmark. Law enforcement officials have launched an investigation, The Associated Press reports
The Danish police are investigating reports of about 20 drones over the port of Køge
Law enforcement officials said the incident occurred the night before
The regional police said that when they arrived at the scene
officers could spot four large drones over the pier
According to a witness who called the police
which later disappeared into the Køge Bay at high speed
Law enforcement officials noted that they are currently trying to establish the exact number of drones and their ownership
They emphasized that no permits for drone flights in the area had been issued at the time of the incident
Police are also checking whether the incident is related to other drone sightings in the country
The incident is being investigated amid growing security concerns in Europe related to Russian hybrid attacks and the war against Ukraine
small UAVs flew over US military bases in the United Kingdom
Also, at the end of last year, it became known that in December, unidentified drones flew over the Ramstein military base in Germany
Drones were also spotted over the facilities of the defense concern Rheinmetall
Earlier today, runways were closed at New York Airport because of an unknown drone

National Police and the intelligence service
are being kept aware of developments after new drone sightings off the harbour in Køge
local police inspector Kim Løvkvist of Central and West Zealand Police said
Løvkvist said there was no clear reason why Køge should be such an interesting location
“There’s no critical societal infrastructure at Køge Harbour as such
as far as I’m aware” he said to news wire Ritzau
He did not rule out espionage as a factor but said police were still keeping all options open
“It’s difficult to investigate because we don’t have a drone operator or any drones
Drones were first sighted near Køge on the weekend of January 4th and 5th
with some 10-12 sightings of suspicious drone activity registered by police this past weekend
Police say they are unsure who is operating the drones
including whether they could be private citizens in Denmark or other persons
But Løvkvist urged the public not to contribute to uncertainty around the situation
perhaps you could give us a call and tell us because it’s setting off a lot of things,” he said
The senior police officer did not give a full list of authorities being kept informed of the situation
but confirmed it includes PET and the National Police

Numerous unknown drones have been sighted over the airspace above Køge in the east of Denmark’s Zealand, Danish Police have claimed.
Danish Police’s Deputy Inspector, Michael Sehested, explained, “We do not know where the drones came from or what they were doing. We have been in contact with several other authorities in this case, but we do not know why the drones were over Køge. We are now trying to find out.”
The reports of the drones came in around 22:30 on Friday 3rd January 2025. After checking permits for drone flights in the area, Police discovered that no permits had been issued and that the flights were considered illegal.
Sehested commented, “A witness believed he spotted up to 20 large drones flying over the area around the marina in Køge. So we dispatched a patrol to the area, and they were able to record four drones.”
Eventually, the drones disappeared over towards the sea, and the last of them was spotted at around 1:16 am.Photo By Jens Cederskjold, Wikicommons

Planned with a network of lush commons and an encircling promenade
The transformation of the former industrial harbor has been 13 years in the making. Back in 2010, SLA contributed to the winning development plan for Køge's former industrial port and railway area, Køge Kyst. The overall vision was to create a social, vibrant, and sustainable district by the coast that would strengthen Køge's role as an important center in the Copenhagen Metropolitan Area and the Oresund region.

the elevated promenade around The South Harbor therefore also serves as a tidal dike
The wide promenade is envisioned as the connector to the surrounding nature
Along its south-facing edges are stairs and recreational spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy the sun or access the footpaths of the large salt meadow

Denmark – Taking her soccer talents to the next level
Virginia Tech women's soccer alumna Nicole Kozlova has signed a professional contract with HB Køge inside Gjensidige Kvindeliga – Denmark's premier women's soccer league
Kozlova touched down in Denmark on Wednesday as she prepares to join the club during its preparation for the spring's championship round campaign
which has won three consecutive league trophies (awarded biannually per season)
will pursue a fourth straight title during the 2021-22 championship round
taking place between late March and early June
Kozlova found the back of the net 14 times during her 40-match tenure with the Hokies
registering six assists while making 37 starts
After taking a medical redshirt during her freshman 2018 season
she bounced back to lead Tech in scoring during 2019 (five goals
capping her collegiate career in 2021 with her seven-goal
four-assist campaign during the program's run to the second round of the NCAA tournament
Kozlova's most notable Tech highlight occurred during the team's September 2021 match at No
12 South Carolina when she slid in the match-winning goal during the first half of the Hokies' 1-0 upset victory
She graduated from Virginia Tech in December
earning her bachelor's degree in computational modeling and data analytics with a minor in mathematics
Kozlova – born in Canada to her Ukrainian parents Dmitry and Olya – has been a regular call-up to the Ukrainian Women's National Team

she competed for Ukraine during 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup qualifying
scoring the opening goal during Ukraine's 4-0 UEFA Group B victory against the Faroe Islands
HB Køge head coach Søren Randa-Boldt addressed the significance of Kozlova's signing in the club's welcome announcement (translated from Danish): "Our contacts and good networks in the [United States] have helped us find a really good striker
she is hardworking and aggressive and then she becomes one who is going to be really annoying to play against for our opponents
she is a national team player for a large European nation in Ukraine and is a hallmark of quality." Upon signing
Kozlova became the second member of Tech's 2021 senior class to pursue soccer at the professional ranks
joining her attacking teammate and fellow December graduate
At the 2022 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Draft presented by Ally

hosts three of the largest glaciers of the Greenland Ice Sheet; these have been major contributors to ice loss in the last two decades
the Holocene history of this area has not been investigated
We present a 9100 year sediment core record of glaciological and oceanographic changes from analysis of foraminiferal assemblages
Results show that ice-rafted debris accumulated constantly throughout the core; this demonstrates that glaciers in Køge Bugt remained in tidewater settings throughout the last 9100 years
This observation constrains maximum Holocene glacier retreat here to less than 6 km from present-day positions
Retreat was minimal despite oceanic and climatic conditions during the early-Holocene that were at least as warm as the present-day
The limited Holocene retreat of glaciers in Køge Bugt was controlled by the subglacial topography of the area; the steeply sloping bed allowed glaciers here to stabilise during retreat
These findings underscore the need to account for individual glacier geometry when predicting future behaviour
We anticipate that glaciers in Køge Bugt will remain in stable configurations in the near-future
despite the predicted continuation of atmospheric and oceanic warming
Core description: ER1116. X-ray and linescan images of ER1116 are shown on a common scale. Black markers show the dated horizons; 14C ages are shown in calibrated years BP with errors of ±2σ. Samples which returned no excess 210Pb are shown in grey. The 14C age determination from 88–89 cm is considered unreliable and is also shown in grey (see supplementary material). This figure was created using Microsoft Excel 2013 and Adobe Illustrator CS6.
IRD abundance derived from sedimentological analysis
(a) The weight of the 63 μm to 2 mm fraction as a percentage of the total sediment weight (excluding clasts >2 mm)
(b) IRD flux derived from the 63 μm to 2 mm fraction (g yr−1)
The black lines on both series show the 10-point running mean
Dashed lines show the individual series means
This figure was created using Microsoft Excel 2013 and Adobe Illustrator CS6
The results show a similar pattern of Cassidulina neoteretis and Cibicides lobatulus abundance through the sediment core. High abundances of both species in the early-Holocene suggest that Køge Bugt was characterised by warm, saline waters and high hydrodynamic energy levels at the seabed during this interval (Fig. 4)
A marked reduction in the abundance of both species occurred at around 5000 years BP
with low values through the remainder of the Holocene
This indicates that the late-Holocene in Køge Bugt was characterised by low current strengths at the seabed and cold oceanographic conditions
whilst we endeavour to uncover the most plausible scenarios
the processes controlling ice-rafted debris sedimentation are complicated and our interpretations are tentative
these results provide a baseline against which to assess the magnitude of glacier change in Køge Bugt
If glaciers in Køge Bugt continue to retreat
this will be unprecedented in at least the last 9100 years
We analysed marine sediments to reconstruct the Holocene glacial and oceanographic history of Køge Bugt
A Rumohr corer with 80 mm diameter liner was used to obtain the 176 cm sediment core
A core catcher device was not used; this ensured that surface sediments were not disturbed during coring
The core was split lengthways prior to analysis
Half of the core was subjected to non-destructive analysis using X-ray imaging (Copenhagen
X-ray imaging was used to examine sedimentary structures in ER1116
Individual high-resolution (0.09 mm px−1) X-ray images were obtained at ~20 cm intervals
these were spliced into a single composite image using functions in Adobe Photoshop CS6
The grain size distribution of sediment in ER1116 was determined by wet-sieving and laser diffraction analysis
Material was sampled from 10 cm3 of sediment
Water content was determined prior to sieving by freeze-drying and weighing
Sediment was wet-sieved through a stack of Retsche sieves (2 mm
The >2 mm fraction was excluded from the percentage calculations to remove large
anomalous peaks caused by the presence of large individual clasts
Individual grid values were then summed to obtain an estimate of volume loss from the glaciological basin (km3) and multiplied by 0.9 to obtain an estimate of ice mass loss (Gt)
This approach assumes that the surrounding outlet glaciers in Køge Bugt behaved synchronously
It also relies on the assumption that glacier thinning between 2003 and 2012 had equilibrated to changes in margin position
and that the relationship between calving front position and thinning has remained constant throughout the Holocene
This method provides a first-order approximation of maximum ice loss from glaciers in Køge Bugt over the last 9100 years

In the 2023 ECNL Girls U18/19 Champions League title match, Slammers FC HB Køge and Michigan Hawks took the field with their eyes set on lifting the ECNL National Championship trophy to conclude an outstanding season of competition
In the opening 20 minutes both sides had some good chances
but largely were playing their way into the game
trying to not make any errors to give their opponent the early edge
Slammers began to start controlling more of the play as the game continued to progress into the latter stages of the first half. That sustained run of play paid off in the 33rd minute, when Faith George was able to position herself in front of goal and get on the other end of a cross to make it 1-0 Slammers
Slammers were able to hold off any Michigan Hawks chances in the remainder of the half and took their 1-0 lead into the halftime break
Slammers struck almost immediately to double their lead
Slammers stole possession of the ball and created a two on one going the other way
A great pass was sent across to Maribel Flores who put home the finish to double the Slammers lead
including a potential chance from a late free kick and an opportunity that went off the post
but the Slammers defense was suffocating throughout the game
Controlling large portions of possession and being able to defend all of what the Hawks threw at them
Slammers were able to hold their two goal advantage throughout the second half
the Slammers bench stormed out onto the field to celebrate with their teammates
as they stood alone as the 2023 U18/19 ECNL Girls National Champions
After the game, Savannah King
talked about how she knew the defense had a tough job in front of them against a tough Michigan Hawks attack
“I knew I had a job coming into this so I just made sure I executed it and we got the win.”
With Slammers on the field celebrating their championship
George discussed how much the win meant to her and how she has been dreaming of this moment
This is something I’ve wanted to do my entire life
“We’re just a dynasty and we’re going to keep racking them up,” King said

A second Toronto FC academy product is headed to HB Koge on loan
TFC announced on Friday that midfielder Noble Okello has been loaned to the Danish second division side, joining center back Rocco Romeo
Romeo has made three appearances for Koge so far this season
"He's a player we feel like has a very bright future
We need him to get some minutes," said Toronto head coach Greg Vanney during a Friday press conference
"The club in Denmark was really interested in him in a way that he was going to go there and be a big player for them in terms of minutes
But now he's got a chance to go get a good solid 12-plus games between now and the end of the year and then we can re-assess going into next year."
Okello, 20, signed with the Reds as a Homegrown Player on January 22, 2019, becoming the 19th player in club history to sign for the first team from the Toronto FC academy. Okello has made one appearance and played 22 minutes this season. He is currently behind Michael Bradley and Liam Fraser on TFC's defensive midfield depth chart
Okello spent three seasons with Toronto FC II and made 42 appearances
While Switzerland complains about rising premiums and deficit-ridden hospitals
Denmark has transformed its health care system
The future of health care is a robot named Arthur
The robot's touch feels like a gentle caress when it uses ultrasound to examine a patient's hands for joint inflammation
Have a good day.» The patient had not spoken to a single person since arriving at the hospital
where one can see the future of health care
The atmosphere in the hospital in Køge is almost eerily calm
New arrivals hold their personal health card up to an electronic reader
A display board shows how long they are likely to wait and where they need to go
Here things are a step ahead of other countries
health expert and former FDP member of the Council of States
Health economists and Swiss hospital managers who visit Denmark agree
Swiss politicians and health insurance company managers get worked up every September after premiums increase
complaining about unprofitable hospitals that can’t be closed
just 21 are left – serving 6 million inhabitants
there are still 101 acute care hospitals and more than 170 others
Swiss health care costs per capita amount to 8049 Swiss francs
compared with the equivalent of just 6280 in Denmark
is the smallest of Denmark's five university hospitals
It is located in the middle of a large construction site
The new treatment wing is already in operation
The upper floors house gleaming white patient rooms with a view of the sea
all with the capacity to serve 200,000 patients a year
Køge is a symbol of the major Danish reform that was initiated over 15 years ago and which
executive medical officer for the Copenhagen region
The core consists of 16 so-called super hospitals
The gigantic construction program led to massive delays and cost overruns – partly due to the COVID-19 crisis
but also because of the complexity of such projects
And it's time to ask the question: What can one learn from the Danes
Danish policymakers pushed through a rigorous program of supra-regional hospital planning
something that in Switzerland is still being debated
competencies were bundled and distributed among the 16 super hospitals
This was triggered by high mortality rates for fatal diseases such as cancer
the nearest hospital with an emergency room was on average 30 to 40 kilometers away
there were initially fierce protests from the population
says health economist Kjeld Möller Pedersen
«they quickly died down when people realized that although they had to travel farther
they received better treatment.» The authorities also determined which of the remaining hospitals was allowed to offer which services
the expertise of the staff and the number of operations performed
The advantage: the specialized hospitals had sufficient case numbers to improve the quality of treatment
As a university hospital with a training obligation and responsibility for one of the five major regions
with particular strengths such as colon cancer operations and rheumatology
Highly specialized procedures such as transplants are in principle still performed by up to three hospitals
while there are still around 10 for breast cancer operations
«This specialization has greatly improved the quality of medicine,» Jylling says
Almost everyone one asks in Denmark agrees
from specialist doctors to nurses to hospital directors
Even if some Swiss hospitals would never admit it
the synergies are obvious: The more cases hospitals have in a particular specialty
the better the doctors and nurses become at treating it
the more experienced the handling of complications
deputy director and project manager at the hospital in Køge
has already reorganized several hospitals in Denmark and abroad
But the former nurse with laugh lines around her eyes says this has been her most difficult project so far
the hospitals were not only given the task of pooling their expertise
but also a fixed budget for the entire region
where the number of patients is growing due to an aging population
the structural modernization is supposed to lead to a reduction in operating costs without the patients noticing any decrease in care
everyone will have the right to a single room
a large screen for X-ray images and Netflix series
a private bathroom and a small couch where relatives can stay overnight
Anyone who knows the Danes knows that they don't indulge in luxuries without a reason
single rooms have multiple medical benefits: the risk of infection is reduced
and doctors can prepare patients and their relatives more efficiently for the time after release from the hospital
who is standing in the basement of the hospital and showing off what he calls the facility’s «heart» – others would probably call it a machine room
The logistics expert explains the hospital’s new system with a nerd’s attention to detail: surgical instruments
bed linen and medicines are delivered in standardized steel containers or mesh trolleys
The supplies are loaded onto computer-controlled conveyor belts that bring the containers to a distribution spot
where small robot trolleys take them and drive them through endless corridors in the basement to the department that needs them
Hansen is responsible for the underground automation
which can be seen everywhere in Danish hospitals
driven by the country’s affinity for digital innovation
The robot Arthur is just one of the more spectacular achievements
where the largest new hospital is being built
the next step will be to use robots that can take blood from patients – and hit the vein in the arm much better than any human
The Danish health care system made a decisive leap forward years ago when the national health card was introduced – a kind of electronic patient file that doctors
radiologists and patients themselves can use to access their medical information
This avoids the multiple examinations and time-consuming referral reports that are so common in Switzerland
«Not an issue,» says health official Jylling
The next step is to fully integrate the general practitioners’ data – that's still missing.»
Although everyone is entitled to free health care financed by taxes
the incentives are set in such a way that doctors and hospitals earn nothing if they expand their services
they have an interest in offering their services as cost-effectively as possible
The contrast between Køge University Hospital and Zurich University Hospital is impressive
even if the latter certainly has more complex cases and more research: The Danes have just two-thirds of the full-time positions of the Zurich hospital
but deal with twice as many inpatient admissions and at least as many outpatient visits
all new buildings have a modular structure
and the standardized rooms and operating theaters can be quickly converted at any time
patients are operated on as outpatients; those admitted to hospital do not stay for more than two days on average
«This also benefits the patients,» says Gaub
This is because the longer someone spends in hospital
The pandemic taught doctors an important lesson: They may be experts at operating
but they are not experts at knowing which treatments are actually good for patients
tells how he and his colleagues canceled many non-urgent operations during the pandemic – including hernias
of which inguinal hernias are the most common
But when they called the same patients again months later to reschedule the operation
the procedure was no longer necessary because the patients had come to terms with their condition.»
«Choosing wisely» is therefore one of the guidelines that the hospital in Køge follows today to determine what is done – and what is no longer done
a six-month wait is now required before deciding whether it should be removed
Doctors have also realized that it can make more sense to apply a cast to broken wrists in elderly people instead of operating on them
«It may not look quite as pretty afterward
but without surgery the hands are immobilized for less time
so they sometimes recover better,» says Gaub
That sounds a bit like people from Køge to Copenhagen are trying to gloss over the downside of tough budget targets
Isn't this saving money at the expense of quality
We ask someone who should know – and who can make a direct comparison with Switzerland
Christoph Tschuor from Graubünden is a surgeon at Rigshospital in Copenhagen
Tschuor specializes in operations on the liver and pancreas as well as liver transplants
If it is scheduled to arrive in the next few hours
«My experience of the cost-conscious approach here is completely different
the quality has increased due to the concentration and specialization in Denmark.»
his department at Rigshospital performs up to 80 operations per year for surgeries such as liver transplantation
Only three clinics are approved for these procedures
So Tschuor gets to operate more than enough to keep improving his skills and routine
where well over a dozen hospitals are allowed to perform such highly specialized procedures
hospitals sometimes fight for operations in order to achieve sufficient case numbers
is noticeable in everything that is not medically necessary
food served at a buffet instead of in the room
and above all the waiting times ahead of non-urgent operations
«If you tell a patient in Switzerland that they have to wait 10 days for a tumor operation
they may go to the next hospital,» says Tschuor
has no free choice when it comes to basic care; even in an emergency
you can only turn up unannounced if you call an ambulance
hospitals are required to provide a diagnosis within two weeks and are allowed a further two weeks for surgery or the start of treatment
This usually works for operations that are urgent
which has still not been completely cleared –particularly for non-urgent interventions
waiting times for hip or knee operations are around 60 days
the hospital in Aarhus made national headlines because it had glossed over long waiting times
it is obliged to ensure that the patient is treated elsewhere
they might even have to cover the costs of therapy abroad
«I rarely see anyone take advantage of this
It doesn't fit with the egalitarian Danish mentality,» says Tschuor
Although more than half of Danes have private supplementary insurance
this only covers costs for diagnoses or minor operations
not for highly specialized surgery such as the liver and pancreas operations performed by Tschuor
which only the large public hospitals are allowed to offer
and there is no expectation that the surgeon will visit you before and after the operation
who is used to doing things differently and continues to do so even after more than two years in Copenhagen
Health care staff and patients are on a first-name basis
and the 37-hour workweek is taken seriously
The Swiss surgeon sometimes still can't believe it when a patient tells him: «Go home
But the relaxed tone in the hospital halls is deceptive
Danish hospitals are rigorous when it comes to measuring their performance
but also in terms of quality – as rigorous as some health care experts like Gutzwiller would like Swiss hospitals to be
«In addition to focusing and better coordination
there is much more talk about the quality of treatment in Denmark,» he says
average length of stay: the figures are regularly recorded and monitored
«If a department deviates too much from the benchmarks
the health authorities are quickly on the scene and a program is under review,» says Tschuor
The big advantage is that decisions are made more objectively and there are nationally applied guidelines for every therapy and every intervention
The disadvantage is that the limits are pushed less than in Switzerland: «People think outside the box less often
There are not enough resources for that,» Tschuor says
He also says that the more generous funding in Switzerland has a positive effect on quality
«But it's also a question of what you want to afford,» he says
In the statistics on deaths from treatable diseases
Switzerland not only performs better than Denmark
Gaub is thoughtful when asked over mineral water and a salmon sandwich what Denmark should have done differently
While she is completing the super hospital in Køge
Danish politicians are already working on the next reform
«A highly specialized infrastructure has been built with the super hospitals
but it is not suitable for solving today's biggest challenge: the aging of a society in which people are increasingly chronically or mentally ill and would be better cared for at home,» critics such as former hospital manager Henrik Schödts say
such as health economist Kjeld Möller Pedersen
saying that one does not preclude the other
they also admit that it would have been better to solve the problem of low-threshold local health care provision along with the original reform
«Now you just have to figure out how to fix it.»
an expert commission has made recommendations on this
It wants to expand the number of family doctors and strengthen local health care networks with general practitioners
nurses and certain specialists such as eye doctors
They should be able to take better care of all the patients who are not simply cured after an operation in a hospital
The smiling pragmatist Gaub also sees an opportunity here for her growing hospital
«We have to bring our expertise to where the patients are,» she says
the hospital has been experimenting with digital care formats
which it calls its «e-hospital.» They enable hospital doctors to care for patients at home
Someone with diabetes can measure her blood sugar levels herself
transmit them electronically and arrange a Zoom appointment if necessary
Parents can take their prematurely born baby home if they transmit its vital signs to the neonatology department every day via an app
«chemo to go» is even on offer: cancer patients are administered chemotherapy via a pocket-sized mobile device that they can take with them while their blood values are monitored via smartphone
Arthur the robot has transmitted the patient's data to his boss Ada Colic
The ultrasound image shows lots of red and blue dots
but everything is fine: «No arthritis,» says the head of rheumatology
Arthur has just saved him a lot of time and potential mistakes
«He is more precise than any doctor and conveys an efficient calm
BUCYRUS – Local residents saw a familiar face next to Steve Harvey on Sunday evening’s edition of NBC’s “Little Big Shots.”
3-year-old Kelson Masayoshi Koge made an appearance on the television show hosted by Harvey and produced by Ellen DeGeneres
His claim to fame was a viral video showing him running a backyard
obstacle course acting as a contestant on his favorite show
With the original video receiving more than 200 million views
"Little Big Shots" reached out to Yoshi and wanted him to be a part of the inaugural season of the show
“The more we watched the show 'American Ninja Warrior,' the more he would want to do it,” Ken Koge
“So we would put something down and he would jump over it or climb up the couch
I was cleaning the garage one day before dinner and he was out there with me and asked me if we could make a course
So we just put out a few pieces of wood here and there and just made something of a makeshift course and he was all excited.”
Yoshi then ran the course while his father filmed
“We literally video everything with four kids and share it on Facebook and it just went viral,” Yoshi’s mother Kim Koge said
“We actually put it on Facebook because we wanted to share it with some family just so they could see the video,” Ken said
Yoshi’s love for "American Ninja Warrior" started at his grandparent’s house when he would watch the show
Then he would watch the show at home with his family and became glued to the TV
“I like the obstacle courses,” Yoshi said of his favorite show
Kim Koge’s email was blowing up with people reaching out wanting to meet Yoshi
I don’t know what to do.' So we were writing down names and trying to contact people and finally the 'Little Big Shots' was the one that stood out the most.”
Yoshi was seen putting his skills to the test on “Little Big Shots” to the tune of an “American Ninja Warrior”-style course built especially for him
It was harder than my dad’s,” Yoshi said of the “Little Big Shots” obstacle course
warped wall and the basement crawl plank,” were all tougher than his homemade course
the Koge clan went out to Los Angeles for the taping of the show
It wasn’t just Bucyrus that saw Yoshi on stage weaving and jumping through the obstacle course designed by the "Little Big Shots" crew; 13.2 million viewers tuned in and saw the future "American Ninja Warrior" in action
“She has never been out of Kentucky or Ohio and naturally he hasn’t
so it was their first time on an airplane,” Ken said
“We were there for a week and in the studio for four days
We had a couple of days where we could go out and explore
They took us into the studio and gave us the VIP treatment.”
“It was pretty amazing and it was our first time seeing an ocean,” Kim Koge said
“Keeping him cooped up in a hotel room was a little iffy for a little bit
It was a lot of fun with the sight-seeing and going places
“American Ninja Warrior” host Akbar Gbaja Biamila was brought onto the set to call a play-by-play of Yoshi’s effort though the course
Akbar said he was impressed with Yoshi and knew he was 2-foot-10 and 26 pounds
But the course was the easy part of Yoshi’s day
Yoshi came out waving and met Harvey for the first time
“One of his big things was he wanted to meet the kids for the first time when they actually recorded so there wasn’t any backstage activity,” Ken said
Harvey asked Yoshi to hop up on the couch for the interview
Yoshi got a little boost from Harvey and found his seat
The two then watched Yoshi’s application video
where he showed off his strength with some push-ups and jumping jacks
“Yeah.” Then Harvey asked him if he knew why he was famous
They then revealed the “Little Big Shots” course and brought out Akbar
They kept that a surprise from all of us,” Kim said
“But they brought us backstage so we all got to meet him and take pictures and talk to him for a little bit.”
“Yoshi” and some last-minute encouraging words from Harvey
Yoshi waited for the countdown and began his "American Ninja Warrior" course
He zoomed through the quintuple steps and over the rolling log
He showed his core strength by working his way through the basement crawl plank and upper body strength through the double helix
he maneuvered his way up the warped wall with ease and
When asked if he watched his performance on TV on Sunday night
As Yoshi was being carried off of the stage by Akbar
the host could be overheard saying he would like to get Yoshi out to a real "American Ninja Warrior" set
“He reached out on Monday morning and was wondering if we would be interested in meeting up out in Indianapolis next month
so we are just waiting on some details,” Kim said
Yoshi will get the opportunity to meet his "American Ninja Warrior" idols Kacy Catanzaro
With his incredible journey of being on TV and visiting Hollywood
surely Yoshi had to have a favorite part of his experience
But none of those stuck with the youngster
“Doing the 'American Ninja Warrior' course,” Yoshi said about his favorite part of Hollywood
The Bucyrus native may have more journeys in his lifetime
But his trip to California and his appearance on “Little Big Shots” was

the top six teams compete in a championship playoff
The seventh-placed team will play a relegation play-off while the eight-placed team is automatically relegated
During these HB Køge was excellent and they went into the playoffs as clear favorites
They had won 12 games and 2 games were a draw
Their direct rivals were Fortuna Hjørring and on the last day of the playoff round they met
A 52nd-minute goal from Cecilie Fløe sealed the deal for the home side and they were champions of Denmark once more
It has been a fantastic season for HB Køge
Not only did they defend their title successfully
but they also played in the UWCL this season
HB Køge managed to keep Fortuna Hjørring in second while also setting a record audience in their stadium of 2,016 people
HB Køge were very dominant this season domestically as they haven’t lost a single game in both the regular season and in the championship group of the playoffs
It will be interesting to see how they will do in the next season

Six out of six! Barça have completed a perfect Champions League group stage by winning every game, completing the set on Wednesday with a 5-0 win over Køge of Denmark in a game preceded by Lieke Martens parading her Golden Woman Player to fans in the Estadi Johan Cruyff.
Leila Ouahabi opened the scoring after just ten minutes and Claudia Pina also found the net but her effort was cancelled out for offside. But Barça were totally in command, and there was an air of inevitability when Rolfo made it 2-0 and Alexia added a third just before the break.
Further goals seemed on the cards but it was not until the 66th minute that we had one when Engen met a corner. Køge had had plenty of chances of their own, and the closest of those efforts hit the crossbar but they were not getting anything out of this game.
The highlight was, without a shadow of a doubt, a fabulous lobbed goal from Martens to make it five and confirm the Catalans’ superiority in their Champions League group.
Barça: Cata, Paredes, Jana, Melanie, Pina, Graham (Ona, min 69), Mariona (Rolfo, min 23), Leila, Alexia (Martens, min 69), Crnogorcevic (Ornella, min 69) & Engen (María Pérez, min 79).
Køge: Marckese, Svendsen, Fitzgerald, Carusa, Guldbjerg, Pokorny (Nowak, min 87), Jankovska (Nielsen, min 46), Nielsen (Kramer, min 56), Markvard, Obaze & Faerge.
Goals: 1-0, Leila (min 10); 2-0, Rolfo (min 30); 3-0, Alexia (min 44); 4-0, Engen (min 66); 5-0, Martens (min 74).
Concacaf silver medal winner Emma Regan has signed her first professional contract with HB Køge in Denmark. The fullback from Burnaby, British Columbia joined the league-leading side just three days after her 23rd birthday on a two-year contract just before the transfer window closed for January.
Regan won a Concacaf silver medal as a teenager with Canada at the 2018 Concacaf Women’s Championship, helping Canada qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019. She has represented Canada at two FIFA youth tournaments and won two Concacaf youth medals.
A graduate of Canada Soccer’s Super REX British Columbia / Vancouver Whitecaps FC Girls Elite program, she won a 2022 League1 BC title with Varsity FC this past summer. Before signing her first pro contract, she played her college football at the University of Texas at Austin.

A goal from Fridolina Rolfö in the 63rd minute and an injury time clincher from Jennifer Hermoso split the teams
Barça let their hosts of the hook time and time again
but are heading back from Denmark with three more points in the bag
and potentially dangerous on the counter attack
but it was always Jonatan Giráldez’s side that looked most in control
But the goal just wouldn’t come and although Jennifer Hermoso
Fridolina Rolfö and Marta Torrejón all had fine chances
Aitana and Patri Guijarro entered the fray
and Barça had the home side pegged right back in their own half
Surely it was just a matter of time before they finally found the net
When the goal finally came it was Aitana who started the move
with a pinpoint assist from Martens picking out Rolfö to convert a goals that did perfect justice to the way the game had gone
Koge still couldn’t get out of their own half as Barça pushed hard for the killer blow
and chance after chance went begging in incredible fashion before Hermoso finally added a second with a late penalty
Last season's semifinalists Paris Saint-Germain come up against Breidablik, Real Madrid and Kharkhiv in Group B with Group D seeing Bayern Munich face seven-times champions Lyon as well as BK Hacken and Benfica
Quarterfinalists Manchester City were knocked out in the qualifying round by Real Madrid on a 2-1 aggregate score
Barcelona beat Chelsea 4-0 in the 2020-21 final
topping off a sensational season for them which saw them win the Treble
The UWCL win was the first time they had ever won the European competition
Lyon's bid to win their sixth title in a row was ended by French rivals PSG during the quarterfinals
The group stages are part of a renewal of the UWCL starting with the 2021-22 season
The previous knockout round-of-16 was replaced with the group stages which sees a 20% increase in the number of matches
Each side will play each other home and away and the top two from each group will go through to the quarterfinals
This season also marks an increase in the prize money available to teams with a new financial distribution model in place that sees the prize pot quadruple to €24 million
Teams competing in the group stage will receive a minimum payment of €400,000 compared to €80,000 at the same stage previously
The winner of the competition could earn €1.4m
VAR will also be used in the UWCL from the knockout rounds
having previously only been used in the final
The group stage matches are scheduled to take place from Oct

A new taphouse, at the harbour of Danish city Koege, will welcome the more than 15.000 yearly visitors to the nearby micro-brewery Braunstein and offer activities for the local community. Copenhagen-based ADEPT is behind the building that is designed for disassembly to meet a potential temporary lease of land.
For the next decade, the recently completed Taphouse by ADEPT will act as the visitors center for the Braunstein brewery and at the same time establish a natural local meeting place supporting community initiatives and activities.
