he needed more seasoning and more time to hone in on his development as a Goaltender so there is no reason to write him off just yet These type of struggles are typical for young netminder’s especially those that are trying to adapt to North America The Flyers sent Kolosov back to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms a few weeks ago Danny Briere said at his mid-season presser Aleksei Kolosov was willing to go to the AHL There was maybe some doubt initially that would actually transpire but in the end Kolosov did in fact report to the Phantoms It’s an adjustment to get acclimated to North America A week later the Flyers since Kolosov found a groove back with the Phantoms That’s where it gets pretty weird and perplexing Ivan Fedotov has backed up Samuel Ersson the past three games so this recall to the big club is kind of perplexing has been disastrous for the past few weeks especially with former Flyers’ Head Coach John Tortorella being fired It may now appear that the Kolosov call-up was Tortorella’s call in the end with Interim Head Coach Brad Shaw in the fold now Fedotov played very bad the past two games.that he played in while accumulating a .709 Save Percentage in the process with both games combined So why hasn’t Kolosov backed up Ersson when he could be helping with their playoff push These questions will have to wait until exit interviews and I will ask General written in free verse for middle grade readers (ages 8-12) explores the fragile existence of southern sea otters—the smallest marine mammals in North America—and the ongoing efforts to ensure their survival.    and a deft hand at weaving fascinating facts about sea otters throughout her narrative author Katherine Applegate introduces readers to a fictional otter pup: “Her mother called her ‘Odder’ / from the moment / she was born / Something about the way / the little pup never settled / something about the way / her eyes were always / full of questions.”    Odder’s life is forever changed when she is separated from her mother during a storm She is rescued by aquarists who do all they can to teach her how to be an otter so she can be reintroduced into the ocean and survive Odder is successfully rehabilitated and lives for three years in her native waters now only a vague echo in her mind: “Stay away from sharks / Stay away from all / that you don’t understand.” When calamity strikes for a second time Odder finds herself in need of rescue once again and hesitantly takes on a role she never thought herself capable of yet one that gives her purpose and an opportunity to be part of something bigger than herself.  detailed pictures of otters—“the champions of cute”—are sure to bring smiles to children’s faces and Katherine Applegate’s wise and humorous comments will make for some laugh-out-loud moments.  Sonya VanderVeen Feddema is a freelance writer and a member of Covenant CRC in St Read entire current print issue » The Banner is more than a magazine; it’s a but with free verse Especially when writing about a world as different from our own as Odder’s free verse can have a visceral impact you might not achieve with prose I noticed that the animals in your stories often have dialogue Can you give us some insight into that stylistic choice Odder’s story was inspired by the successful surrogacy programs with otters at the Monterey Bay Aquarium In what ways can readers help otters or other animals in the wild What do you think animals can teach children about human relationships young readers need to arm themselves with knowledge Learn about groups that work to preserve endangered species Write letters in support of legislation that helps protect species Caring for animals is often one of the first ways children experience responsibility for another living thing Kids can feel small and powerless sometimes and when they realize they can be nurturing and protective With all of the recognition your books have achieved (including the Newbery Medal and a film adaptation for The One and Only Ivan and the Golden Kite Award for Home of the Brave) what else would you still like to accomplish in your career It’s always about just one thing: learning Every single time it’s like starting from scratch I’m at work on a couple new middle grade novels right now don’t-talk-about-them-or-the-bubble-will-burst phase and I will always be grateful for the chance to do this work an exclusive excerpt from Katherine Applegate's Odder charming branch                                                                                                                                                                        but small for his age,                                                              Otter #132                              Not far from the shark,                       they count                                                                                                                 Squiggles and Splash            her eyes were always                                      You did not sign in correctly or your account is temporarily disabled Passwords must include at least 8 characters Your password must include at least three of these elements: lower case letters The email you entered already exists. We came at it from the point that Dimmsdale itself was a character and the people that live in Dimmsdale are just as crazy bizarre and over-the-top as the town is.  Then, of course, we need the fairies which were never there until it got to the mix that was the first real challenge when we started putting it up on its feet We designed two cardboard Cosmo and Wandas on metal poles and we hired two amazing actors to move with the kids on set the kids had it in their muscle memory where Cosmo and Wanda were You're literally putting stuff where you want it to MC: They are extraordinary playing Viv] has the toughest role in the show We are seeing Dimmsdale through Viv's eyes as she’s reacting to all the magic and crazy stuff going on Then we just hit the jackpot with the parents RJ [Ryan-James Hatanka] and Laura Bell Bundy there's this wonderful moment with them on the couch as a family most of these things are truly about family It's fun seeing Audrey get accepted into the family Then you round it out with your guest cast taking an animated character so beloved for so long and being given the reigns to bring her to life Crocker impression] "Hello Vicki," it's like Mr Many cast members – from Laura Bell Bundy to Lesli Margherita – have serious musical theater cred Did that influence the decision to create musical numbers for the show MC: Absolutely. And Tyler is on Broadway right now in "Mrs. Doubtfire." When the casting started coming together and Laura Bell Bundy popped up, it was like, "I'm sorry, the Laura Bell Bundy?" It's interesting because with multi-camera television as opposed to single-camera where you're building it more in editing To have these theatrically trained actors was an important part of what we were doing we leaned into the fact that the parents love to dance It's such a fun and exciting thing to see.  The musical part is Samantha Martin, the other EP. She’s a musical genius. There's no other way to put it. She did "Henry Danger: The Musical." For the last episode Sam wrote a musical number that we had a lot of fun shooting Sam has a very specific vision of how it's supposed to be I tried to really capture it with my cameras longer techno gib and followed shots just to really help pump up the song visually The singing and dancing is a through-line throughout the piece People suddenly just start dancing. Dimmsdale’s weird The show dropped on Paramount+ on March 31st What has been the reaction like with both new audiences and ones so any time you take something people grew up on and have a very specific memory of it's a responsibility that we didn't take for granted We wanted very much to pay homage to the original but at the same time create these new characters that fit in it The comments have been just overwhelmingly positive "I never thought in a million years I'd hear Cosmo and Wanda's voice again I have a seven-year-old and they're also watching it and loving it." There's that connection that a parent can have with your child through a television show You have over 6 million followers on TikTok and Instagram Where did the impetus to start posting on social media come from MC: "Henry Danger" was a very special show I still don't know how we ever filmed anything 'cause we goofed around so much But I realized young me would have loved to have had Instagram and seen Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher screwing around on the set of "Star Wars" or some show I loved tune in this Saturday to watch 'Henry Danger.’” With everyone's permission I started this account and I post how much fun we have I found myself connecting with kids around the world who will never have a chance to come to the Burbank studios Now I’m at 6.2 million followers on TikTok That responsibility of having that many people follow you isn't something I take lightly We don't have a show unless there are fans They're the ones that are tuning in and commenting and posting and telling their friends to watch I look at it as a thank you for the fans.  What advice do you have for young people who want to be a director or work in TV MC: Hollywood is a very non-linear business I studied acting in college and landed a part on the soap opera "The Young And The Restless." I met a producer who knew there was an opening for a stage manager on "Passions." From there second-second AD to first AD to then director and producer I'm more than happy to answer because I was once a 21-year-old who was walking onto sets and auditions scared out of my mind You cannot make a TV show or a film without the whole team If you come into a show with that understanding then how could you not do the best job you could do The last thing I always tell kids about directing is that with your phone you can act You constantly have to be working on your craft Now everyone's got a really good camera that shoots in 4K You can follow Mike Caron on TikTok and Instagram at mikecaron_LA. “The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder” is streaming now on Paramount+.  Powered by Squarespace View upcoming auction estimates and receive personalized email alerts for the artists you follow Odd Nerdrum It happened that in the midst of the dissipations attendant upon a Los Angeles winter there appeared at Patrick Painter Gallery a show of paintings by one of the world’s most notorious figurative painters remarkable for the singularity of his works Like a character supernaturally cast from a retro-gothic novel set in the dangerous days of early science, Odd Nerdrum fashions himself in a linen smock and robes He resembles the characters in his paintings His sons and wife share the peculiarly hand-made sartorial tastes of the pater familias of the clan and when he makes a public appearance he is trailed by his acolyte fans who tail behind the master like medieval cos-play devotees Nerdrum himself has been costumed thus so long that it has become habitual and has not a hint of affectation A publicity still of Odd Nerdrum in his black robe exiled from his home while the silent agents of the Norwegian government pursued him for failing to provide them with their take of the wealth his art provided his cavalcade dwelled among the black volcanic extrusions and steaming springs of frozen Iceland and he painted strange imagery composed upon geometric patterns as if to illustrate the rituals and incantations of some esoteric secret society Even his clouds formed occult shapes and presented themselves as mysteries to be solved The stories the paintings told were of naked men striding in step through barren Thule landscapes assailed by snakes as they sang; gory horse decapitations; self-portraits with a battered spreading a golden robe to expose an ambitious erection; hermaphrodites; nothing’s shocking He is legendary for his insistence that he is not an artist and utterly rejects the conventions and expectations of the conventional art world although the price he has paid for decades of hostility toward the critics has been a black strain of indulgent self-pity that seeps from his work and even his moments of narcissism are a conventional person’s wonder The millenarian turn of the century failed to produce an adequate apocalypse and Nerdrum’s perceived persecution became a reality when he was accused of tax evasion in 2012 With an international investigation and trial underway his melancholy paintings turned almost cheerful and his postdiluvian refugees began a nearly blissful life finding an eerie reconciliation with the hostile landscape nurtured and protected and embraced babies Some learned how to project themselves into the astral realm In 2014 he was found guilty and convicted to a 20-month prison sentence The snake has struck lethal poison into the veins of another victim and an open-mouthed and weeping father wearing a carapace headcloth clutches the dead boy his distraught bow cast alongside a pair of thin and struggling weeds The viper is held in the lifeless hand of his grey son solitary figures are isolated against the horizon A becalmed boat drifts in the still water beside the rocky shoreline Nerdrum remembered both his self-sympathy and his favorite subject when he cast himself as an exhausted Sisyphean Man With Rock Nerdrum has always played the prophet in the wilderness For more on auctions, exhibitions, and current trends, visit our Magazine Page (()=>{const e=document.getElementById("yt-img-s76j8XrjJSo");e&&e.addEventListener("load",(t=>{t.target.naturalWidth<=120&&(e.parentNode.children[0].srcset=e.parentNode.children[1].srcset=e.src)}),{once:!0})})() L.A County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said Inspector General Max Huntsman denies the Holocaust but gave no evidence was received during our interview with him at 9 a.m. as part of our endorsement process for the June election The interview itself was even odder, most notably for the out-of-nowhere, evidence-free assertion that county Inspector General Max Huntsman is a Holocaust denier. Huntsman, in response to a Times editorial writer’s question about Villanueva’s accusation, said the allegation is completely false. “Of course the Holocaust was real,” he said. He later sent the county Board of Supervisors a letter advising members of the conversation. The assertion is “such a deeply offensive allegation that I wanted you to hear from me that I have never denied the Holocaust,” Huntsman wrote to the board. L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva’s stance against mandatory COVID-19 vaccines for deputies exposes his disregard for those he is supposed to serve. We have been presented with absolutely no evidence that Huntsman, who is tasked with monitoring and overseeing the Sheriff’s Department, is a Holocaust denier. The question this episode raises is about the sheriff: What kind of person — what kind of elected official and what kind of law enforcement officer — makes such a claim about someone and insists that he has proof but refuses to share it? That’s what Villanueva did. We had asked him what event precipitated a rift between him and the board early in his tenure, and he said it was his defeat of incumbent Sheriff Jim McDonnell in 2018, and then for whatever reason he added this non sequitur: “You do realize that Max Huntsman, one, he’s a Holocaust denier. I don’t know if you’re aware of that. I have it from two separate sources. And he filed a complaint against me because I refer to him as Max-Gustaf Huntsman, his actual legal name, that’s on his [State] Bar card. And he filed a complaint to the — I thought that was kind of humorous.” The statement was so bizarre that we quickly moved on, but then came back to it. What evidence did he have? “We have it from two very credible sources,” he said. “And I’m not going to divulge them at this time. But…you give a lot of credibility that he has a title, inspector general, and oh, my God, it sounds like so important and credible. But he’s just a political appointee from the board. Nothing more.” California that’s different from being a Holocaust denier And I think you need to start doing your own homework on it.” An editorial board member then asked why that’s our homework to do when he is the one who raised the issue and won’t back it up I think we have the information and in due time But I think you need to do your homework because you don’t.” Villanueva’s primary task as a law enforcement officer is to collect facts and evidence and present them to prosecutors so courts can make rulings to protect public safety and mete out proper justice but he seems unable to discern actual facts or evidence between Sheriff Alex Villanueva and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors But it’s a useful window into his character. He’s the man who promised “truth and reconciliation” to people harmed by the Sheriff’s Department, only to make clear later that promise was meant only for deputies who had previously been fired for misconduct Villanueva’s allegation against Huntsman sounds deranged, but it’s deeper than that. He seems willing to say anything to smear an official who challenges his conduct in office. In any event, he is dishonorable and undeserving — of being sheriff or even of wearing a law enforcement uniform. Cosmo and Wanda have sadly been resurrected for 'The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder.' The official trailer was released on February 24 which shows green-haired Cosmo and pink-haired Wanda looking exactly the same as the Nickelodeon show originally aired from 2001-2006 — while Timmy is all grown up wearing a long-sleeve pink Princeton t-shirt Did he also wish for that acceptance letter Anyway, maybe I’m being a little harsh on the fine execs at Paramount Plus. I guess this isn’t the first live adaption of Fairly OddParents. Nickelodeon heartthrob Drake Bell previously portrayed a live-action Timmy in 2011's A Fairly Odd Movie: Grow Up (Does anyone want to watch a movie about a 23-year-old man?) Susanne Blakeslee and Daran Norris who originally voiced Cosmo and Wanda are also returning for the reboot and we’re very happy for them for holding onto steady lucrative work in the hellscape that is show business This article was originally published on Feb The Fairly OddParents debuted March 30, 2001 on Nickelodeon. Now, 21 years later, the beloved animated series is getting a live-action and animation reboot in The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder – a Paramount+ original series debuting March 31 “Based on the original smash-hit franchise The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder will pick up where the original ended by following Timmy Turner’s cousin as they navigate life in Dimmsdale with the help of their fairy godparents Wanda and Cosmo,” the series description says return to the series as everyone’s favorite married fairies they share what it was like to return to their (insert Mr Crocker voice here) fairy godparent characters in the series coming back to Wanda didn’t change a thing I just didn’t have to go out to the grocery store as Wanda Now I have a place that is legitimate that I can do her,” Blakeslee teases “It was a thrill and a shock and exciting “Completely unexpected!” Norris says of the reboot “Even when he heard that Paramount+ was doing another version of Fairly OddParents there was no reason for us to expect to be involved good luck to whoever plays those roles.’ So knock me over with a feather when they reached out to say we’d like you guys to reprise your roles.’ Wow.” Blakeslee and Norris make up the animated cast (Norris also reprises his role as Jorgen Von Strangle, who makes occasional appearances in Season 1). Joining them in the live-action cast are Audrey Grace Marshall as Viv, Tyler Wladis as Roy, Ryan-James Hatanaka as Tyler, Laura Bell Bundy as Rachel The OG Fairly OddParents ran for 10 seasons with the series finale airing in July 2017 (the series is available to stream on Paramount+) Norris and Blakeslee say they barely used their Cosmo and Wanda voices in the five years since the show ended After five years away from Cosmo and Wanda the actors broke down what it was like to get the voices back “I’ve likened it to like an old pair of jeans that are just really comfortable,” Norris says except in casual conversation — or with kids sometimes I’ll do the voices — I hadn’t done them in a long time,” he continues before employing his Jorgen and Cosmo personas “So it was a relief to just sort of sit down and get in front of a microphone and go “It was just so much fun to jump back into the character I adore her and the scripts are so funny that it’s just a joy to be part of this,” Blakeslee shares I don’t have to work half as hard as the live actors They put together these singing and dancing numbers in this compressed amount of time It’s truly spectacular for me to watch.” The live-action/animation reboot is exactly what you’d expect of a kids’ sitcom: campy humor and shenanigans that lead to heartwarming moments And it peppers in shoutouts to the original series outside of the fairies But the return of Cosmo and Wanda — complete with their adult humor and penchant for amusing chaos — is the biggest delight “We’ve had so much fun over the years recording this show To have yet another opportunity to play these people again!” Norris says “Susanne and I have great admiration and real It’s so great to get to do it again.” Sign Up The second mysterious interstellar object found zipping through the solar system That stands in stark contrast to the first known interstellar object Stuart Rankin/Flickr (CC BY-NC 2.0) By Maria Temming Preliminary wavelength observations have already hinted that 2I/Borisov contains cyanogen gas (made of carbon and nitrogen atoms) which is relatively common in comets native to the solar system Astronomer Alan Fitzsimmons of Queen’s University Belfast in Northern Ireland and colleagues report these findings October 2 at arXiv.org.  a comet currently cruising through our solar system called 2I/Borisov looks fairly different from the first discovered interstellar visitor — an asteroid-like object called ‘Oumuamua that skirted by Earth in 2017 Here are some of the key distinctions between this pair of galaxy-trotting space rocks Questions or comments on this article? However, since 1990, the local distinctiveness’ charity Common Ground has worked to establish 21 October as Apple Day utility and cultural heritage of English apples Some of the fruit’s success is due to this genetic predisposition towards diversity Plant a seed from your Cox or your Granny Smith and the tree that grows will produce fruit that looks and tastes completely unlike the apple you ate Each apple seed produces offspring that are distinct individuals Without grafting – invented by the Chinese 3,000 years ago – your sweet and juicy Worcester Pearmain would have disappeared centuries ago The symbolic dimension of apples is also complex and confusing The likely derivation is from the Proto-Germanic root *aplaz (ultimately derived from Proto-Indo-European *abl-) which also feeds into the Germanic words appel (Dutch) eple (Old Norse) and Apfel (German) although this could also mean ‘fruit’ in general the medieval English term for banana was appel of paradis dates were fingeræppla (‘finger-apples’) and cucumbers (rather than the then unknown potato) were eorþæppla (‘earth-apples’) This lack of specificity also afflicts the classical names for the fruit The Latin for ‘apple’ is malum which comes from the Greek word melon Both Greeks and Romans used the word melon or malum to refer to any roundish fruit that grows on a tree: such as apples This sense of an ‘apple’ as a general term for fruit probably led to its adoption as the fruit of the tree of knowledge which Adam and Eve consume in the Garden of Eden scholarly cases have been made for the Hebrew word tappuach as referring to quince as all three were cultivated earlier than the apple preferring to let nature take its course and allow the yeasts that occur naturally on the skin of the apples to turn the sugar in the juice to alcohol apple-rich flavour and a very different quality of intoxication euphoria sets in and the drinker finds themselves babbling in an unstoppable flow I found a clue as to why in Merlin Sheldrake’s fine book on fungi “Different varieties of apple,” he explains preferentially preserving and transforming different elements of the fruit’s flavour.” His experience of drinking home-made cider chimes with my own not so much drunk as high on yeast and tradition Byline Times is brought to you by a dedicated team of journalists and contributors – producing independent, fearless, investigative and thought-provoking journalism not found in the established media. With late Eastwood, there’s always some clunkiness to get past, but that’s part of the price of admission. He doesn’t fuss over multiple takes when he doesn’t have to. He gets what he needs, then it’s onto the next scene or the next movie. He knows that time isn’t on his side and he has work to get done. Richard Jewell was preceded by a much more successful film in the same vein, however. In 2016’s Sully, Tom Hanks stars as Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the airline pilot who landed a disabled plane on the Hudson River in 2009. There’s an easy way to tell this story, particularly with Hanks as the lead, a simple, straightforward version that sends audiences out cheering as America’s most likable movie star steps into the shoes of one of its easiest to admire heroes. Eastwood finds a little more hope than Scorsese, and if Cry Macho were to be his swan song, it would be a lovely way to bow out. But, given that it’s Eastwood, he’s probably not thinking that way. If we’re lucky we’ll get another just as unpredictable decade as he closes in on 100.
