Denmark-based CS Wind Offshore has announced it is contemplating the layoff of approximately 220 employees at its Odense Port facility due to recent offshore wind project cancellations and market challenges
several offshore wind projects are being either postponed or cancelled due to political interventions and unfavourable terms of business cases
which have impacted the entire supply chain
“Due to the current market development and cancellation of offshore wind projects
CS WIND Offshore has today announced to its employees a need to significantly reduce costs at its production facility at Odense Port
the company unfortunately sees no other way than to significantly reduce its manning and therefore contemplates to lay off approximately 220 employees,” stated CS Wind Offshore
A lack of new monopile orders means that the CS Wind Offshore monopile factory at Odense Port will be idle for a “substantial period of time”
leading to the need for a “significant reduction” of the workforce at the Lindø site
“Over the past couple of years our employees have worked very hard to get our monopile factoryfully up and running
and it is highly regrettable that we now seeno other option than to ramp down due to a lack of new orders,” said Knud Bjarne Hansen
“We sincerely regret the impact this is likely to have on good and highly competent colleagues who have dedicated their time and efforts to the company
but also the many sub-suppliers who are supporting our work in various ways.”
In December 2023, South Korea-based CS WIND completed the acquisition of Bladt Industries
“CS Wind acquired Bladt Industries in order to expand our offshore product offering
so there is no doubt that we want to stay in the monopile business
It is also important to note that we will of course finalize delivery of the monopiles we are currently producing at Odense Port so the contemplated reduction of the workforce will take place over the coming 3-9 months,” said Hansen
CS Wind Offshore signed a contract with Vattenfall and BASG for the supply of transition pieces for the Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2 offshore wind farms in Germany
The manufacturing of the 68 units will commence at CS Wind Offshore’s production site at Aalborg Port

Archaeologists from Museum Odense have uncovered a remarkable Viking burial site in the Danish village of Åsum
revealing more than 50 exceptionally well-preserved skeletons
further enhancing the archaeological significance of the site
archaeologist and curator at Museum Odense
“It is truly unusual to find so many well-preserved skeletons at once
This discovery offers extraordinary opportunities to perform a wide range of scientific analyses
which can reveal more about the general health
and origins of those buried.” Lundø further explained that these analyses might even uncover whether the buried individuals were related
a question that has never been explored in similar Viking graves
which spans approximately 2,000 square meters
a period when Gorm and Thyra ruled in Jelling
It is one of the largest Viking burial sites discovered on the island of Funen
the skeletons are so well-preserved that for the first time
it may be possible to conduct ancient DNA (aDNA) analyses
“It will be incredibly exciting to learn where these people came from and whether the same families were buried here across multiple generations,” she remarked
Several of the graves provide evidence of high-status individuals
with artifacts indicating that the Vikings buried in Åsum had connections to far-reaching trade networks
One of the most notable discoveries is the grave of a woman
possibly the one she traveled in during her life
Her grave goods included a glass bead necklace
a knife with a handle wrapped in silver thread
and a small shard of glass that may have served as an amulet
At the foot of her grave was a finely decorated wooden chest
Other significant items found in the graves include a bronze three-lobed brooch
which is not native to Denmark and likely originated from Norway
underscores the extensive trade connections Vikings maintained
“Several objects from the many graves in Åsum show that the buried Vikings were connected to international trade networks that developed during the Viking Age,” said Lundø
combined with the sheer scale of the burial ground
suggest that Åsum was an important settlement during this period
possibly playing a central role in the development of what would later become the city of Odense
The excavation took place as part of preparations for Energinet’s work on upgrading the local electrical grid
thanks to favorable soil conditions and high water levels
is allowing researchers to extract DNA samples
which could reveal previously unknown aspects of Viking ancestry and kinship
Lundø noted that the preservation of the skeletons is exceptional
“Normally when we excavate Viking graves
we’d be lucky if there were two teeth left in the grave besides the grave goods
but here we have the skeletons fully preserved
This opens up a whole new set of possibilities for discoveries.”

Denmark's Odense Händbold won a dramatic victory
advancing to the European Women's Handball Champions League FINAL4 for the first time in the club's history
Odense defeated FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria 25-24 in the second leg of the quarterfinals of the 2024/25 EHF Women's Handball Champions League held at Erde Arena in Hungary on the 26th (local time)
made a historic advance to the semi-finals as the winner of the second round confirmed their progress to the semifinals
and Odense made a dramatic win by one point to make the overall score 52-51
This victory holds special significance for Odense
who has been frustrated in all three Champions League quarter-final challenges
has finally solved his long-cherished dream and is listed as the third Danish club to reach the FINAL4 stage this season
A fierce battle was held from the beginning of the game
Odense dominated the early flow with Thale Rushfeldt Deila scoring five goals within 10 minutes of the game
and scored the most goals in the team with seven goals in total
Helena Elver (five goals) and Elma Halilcevic (four goals) also played evenly to support the attack
Rail Cargo Hungary fought hard with four goals each from B̈LK Emily (5 goals)
but failed to take advantage of the decisive opportunity
with only 39% of the team's attack success rate
Leil Cargo Hungaria caught up and trailed by 11-12 and one goal in the 20th minute
scoring three goals in a row in the end to dramatically tie the score at 14-14
Rail Cargo Hungary scored first and was caught up repeatedly before scoring two goals in a row to escape by 20-18
and the game developed into an unknown pattern until the end
The two teams remained tight until the middle of the second half
but Odense turned the game around by scoring seven goals and conceding only four goals with strong pressure and concentration just before the end of the game
he scored three goals in a row to turn the game around 25-23
The change of goalkeeper also had a decisive effect on the game
kept the victory with 12 saves and a 46 percent save rate
"It was a crazy feeling," Odense goalkeeper Reinhardt told the European Handball Federation (EHF) after the game
This moment will be remembered for the rest of my life," he said
Rail Cargo Hungary suffered another setback at the FINAL4 threshold
with the disgraced record of seven consecutive winless games at home in the quarterfinals
the shock was even greater as he won 12 games in the group stage this season and achieved the best performance in club history
It was also the last stage of LEKIC Andrea's Champions League
she was one of only four to score more than 1,000 goals in European women's handball
saying goodbye to the glamorous European stage at the end of the day
The FINAL4 stage in Budapest is the last battlefield for Odense to challenge for the European top
Odense will face Metz Handball in the semifinals

the Bulldogs have grown into a cornerstone of Danish ice hockey and represent the only elite-level club on the island of Funen
they've built a reputation for passionate play
The team plays its home games at the Spar Nord Arena (formerly known as Odense Isstadion)
a lively venue located in the Bolbro district that holds over 3,200 spectators.
the Bulldogs clinched their first-ever national championship in 2025
marking a defining moment in the club’s legacy and thrilling fans across the region
The long-awaited title capped off decades of determination and steady progress

2025/26 will be their very first season in the Champions Hockey League
Although she was not in the starting lineup
Reinhardt proved to be the decisive factor between the two sides with a saving percentage of no less than 48% in the second half to help Odense beat Ferencvaros 25-24 in the second leg of their two matches in the Champions League quarter-finals
The first game in Odense ended in a 27-27 draw
and therefore Odense proceeded to the Final Four on an aggreate 52-51 aggregate scoreline
Although playing in a Hungarian inforno in Budapest, Odense got off to a terrific start as especially Thale Rushfeldt Deila proved her goal instinct scoring four of Odense's first six goals
This resulted in a 6-3 lead after just over eight minutes
The first 15 minutes was almost flawless for Odense
but then things started to go wrong for the Danes due to a large number of technical mistakes
and with five seconds left before the interval
Ferencvaros began the second half in superb fashion and quickly took a 16-14 lead against a defensively frail Danish side
Odense could count themselves lucky that Reinhardt time and time again provided miraculous saves to keep the Danes in the game
Her outstanding performance recreated the belief in the Odense outfit
as the Danes built a two-goal advantage towards the end and despite getting close Ferencvaros could not quite close that gap again
The Final Four will be staged in Budapest on 31 May 31 and 1 June

It's really disappointing that I won't be able to participate in the important matches

so I also have to take care of my body right now"
Odense will be in action again when they face Copenhagen Handball on Wednesday
is set to undergo a significant transformation aimed at enhancing its visibility and enriching its historical storytelling
This ambitious renovation project is expected to begin soon
with a target completion date set for autumn 2026
As one of Denmark’s five Viking ring fortresses
Nonnebakken has often been overlooked due to its subtle presence
the upcoming renovation will draw attention to its historical importance
Broad steel bands will outline its embankment
and markers will be installed along Allégade and Hunderupvej
a large bronze model representing the Viking structure will be placed in a nearby park
The project will highlight sections of the ringfort rampart using wide ribbons and plants placed between them
making the markings visible at several locations in central Odense
A large model of the ringfort will also be created
will have the chance to play on a small section of the recreated defenses
This initiative is a collaboration between Odense Municipality as the project developer
including Odd Fellow Logen and Giersings Realskole
The project is backed by a generous 26 million kroner investment
Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller’s Foundation
constructed around 980 AD by Harald Bluetooth
was part of a defensive network of five ringforts
was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in September 2023
The fortress was originally a circular structure with a 180-metre outer diameter
surrounded by a 9-metre-wide moat and a rampart up to 5-6 metres high
“The fortress’s location in the centre of the city deserves attention and helps tell the story of Odense as a strategically important place
The renovation will bring greater focus to Nonnebakken’s role in Denmark’s Viking history
with the fortress originally constructed around 980 as part of a network of five ring fortresses
or "ringborge," built during Harald Bluetooth’s reign
FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria came from behind against Odense Håndbold to save a draw and extend their chances of qualifying for the second time in their history to the EHF FINAL4
despite leading only once throughout the 60 minutes in the high-octane 27:27 draw
Odense Håndbold (DEN) vs FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria (HUN) 27:27 (14:12)
Chances come and go and Odense Håndbold will surely rue their performance in the last 15 minutes of the first leg of the quarter-final against FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria
The Danish side scored only four times in the fourth quarter of the match
their attacking efficiency plummeting to only 40 per cent
enabling their opponents to mount a spirited comeback
While Helena Elver Hagesø scored eight times
Odense were found lacking in the business end of the match
despite leading 26:23 after Hagesø scored her last goal with five minutes to go
FTC bounced back and finished the match with a 4:1 run
The 27:27 draw should make the Hungarian champions favourites for a place in the EHF FINAL4

4 of group B when Buducnost and Odense enter the court in Podgorica's Sports Centre Moraca for MOTW
Apart from their defeat in Wednesday's rescheduled match at SCM Ramnicu Valcea
Buducnost have recovered in recent rounds from their rough start to the season
when they gathered just one point from their first four matches
That series included a 30:21 drubbing at the hands of Odense
which had a blistering start to only their second EHF Champions League campaign and were leading group B for several rounds
In the Danish side's first season in Europe's top flight
the two-time Champions League winners came away with two victories: 31:28 at home and 26:22 in Denmark
While Buducnost likely have done enough to advance to the play-offs
Odense are still in with a chance to make it to the top two in group B - with direct access to the quarter-final as a bonus
first of all in Saturday's MOTW against Buducnost

Overview: This conference seeks to consolidate emergent scholarship and artworks that explore the power of narrative to motivate climate-conscious action
The emphasis in this conference is on climate narratives in practice; in other words
it is concerned with works that apply these narratives in various public-facing contexts
texts exploring the impact of climate change has proliferated alongside the now-familiar call for better narrative accounts of the Anthropocene.[1] At the same time
it is not enough to generate simply more of these narratives; the crucial task remains to evaluate how they are taken up by readers and audiences and make meaning in the world.[2] To this end
the conference’s presentations will be categorized within three areas where it is possible to assess this literature’s potential impact: the implementation of climate narratives in the classroom (pedagogy); empirical studies of climate fiction’s reception (empirical ecocriticism); and artworks that embed narratives for the purpose of inspiring greater climate consciousness (climate activism)
Rather than repeat calls for more and better representations of climate change in fiction
this conference takes stock of the most recent innovations in eco-storytelling and asks: how should the urgency of the climate crisis (and the resulting call to action) affect our expectations from
And what evidence emerges for fiction’s capacity to inspire greater ecological awareness
These questions strike at the core of the environmental humanities
To answer them requires the contributions of researchers as well as those at the front line
of the fight to foster ecological awareness: teachers
this conference stresses the wide interest in topics such as climate fiction and eco-literacy
it stresses the complementary approaches of these fields and
facilitates both nuanced insights and a comprehensive overview of the public’s climate-change imaginary
This knowledge exchange is even more urgent given the acceleration of the climate emergency locally and across the globe
Speakers: The keynote speakers reiterate the conference’s mission of bridging empirical
and artistic accounts of climate literature
These confirmed speakers include (as of writing): Dr
a field-defining researcher on the influence of climate narratives on readers; Dr
a leading expert on environmental pedagogy; and the Danish author Theis Ørntoft
whose accolades include the European Union Prize for Literature (2024)
Suggested Topics include but are not limited to:
Submission Guidelines: Please submit your 250-word abstract for 20-min presentations and a short bio to clifi.conference@gmail.com by November 1
Accepted speakers will be notified by December 31, 2024. The conference is scheduled to take place in person. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the conference organizers at yazell@sdu.dk and lnole@sdu.dk

China’s Dajin Heavy Industry has signed a reservation agreement with Danish Odense Port for 100,000 square metres of the port area to store offshore wind components
which will later be installed on European wind farms
the Chinese manufacturer plans to deliver a “substantial” number of monopiles and transition pieces for projects across Europe
One of Dajin’s largest European customers
including 36 that will be delivered to Thor
Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm with a capacity of 1 GW
The Danish Energy Agency (DEA) recently granted RWE the offshore construction permit for Thor
enabling the developer to begin offshore work in spring 2025
The Chinese company has previously stored its monopiles in Eemshaven in the Netherlands
and Dajin will now expand its marshalling operations to collaborate with Odense Port for the storage of offshore wind foundations
Europe has set a target of installing up to 450 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2050 – primarily in the North Sea and Baltic Sea – as part of its ambition to achieve climate neutrality
“The expanding offshore wind sector is pivotal to reach these overarching European political objectives
As more projects progress from planning to installation
the critical role of offshore wind in Europe’s energy transition is becoming increasingly clear,” according to Odense Port
energy ministers from the nine members of the North Seas Energy Cooperation (NSEC) agreed to reach at least 260 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2050
the members also agreed on expansion targets for the North Sea region of 76 GW of offshore wind by 2030
Helena Elver in action against FerencvarosFrank Cilius / EPA / ProfimediaOdense led several times by four goals against Ferencvaros but were left to settle for a 27-27 draw
when the two sides met in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal
The Danish side will rue scoring only four times in the fourth quarter of the match as their attacking efficiency plummeted to only 40 per cent
leaving the door open for the Hungarians to mount a spirited comeback
While Helena Elver scored eight times, and Elma Halilcevic added five goals, Odense couldn't execute their game plan at end of the match
despite leading 26-23 after Elver scored her last goal with five minutes to go
Ferencvaros relied on their enormous experience to bounce back and finished the match with a 4-1 run
The draw will now favor the Hungarian champions to go through to the Final Four
with the upcoming second leg scheduled for Saturday
but will rue allowing Ferencvaros to crawl back into the tie
Odense's chances of a maiden appearance in the Final Four are now significantly slimmer, in what would be Ole Gustav Gjekstad’s last matches on the bench of the Danish side

On Wednesday night the Danish national team goalkeeper is back in the squad for her club Odense
who faces Copenhagen Handball in the Danish domestic league
Since her accident at the European championships information about her potential progress has been scarce
in January said the club is taking it "day by day
But now the 28-year-old goalkeeper is ready to play
Reinhardt said to Odense Handball's website:
"I feel good and have started to train fully again
I can feel that I have been out for a while
"It has been a longer rehabilitation process than I had hoped for Fortunately
and the club has taken really good care of me
So now I am looking forward to being back soon and fighting alongside the girls."
In the absence of Reinhardt, Odense signed the 44-year old Norwegian international goalkeeper, Katrine Lunde and the club is yet to lose a game this season
and before that she was first-choice keeper at Aalborg DH
she has been under contract with a number of international clubs but now she is ready to continue her career at Odense
"I am incredibly proud of this opportunity to play on one of the world's best handball teams and I am looking forward to playing my first home game in Sydbank Arena

Odense were all smiles on Saturday as their completed an amazing regular seasonProfimediaOdense on Saturday afternoon completed an amazing feat in the Danish domestic league when they won 34-31 away against Aarhus Handball and thereby finished the regular season with a perfect record, 36 wins out of a possible 36.The win for Odense at the same time condemned Aarhus Handball to relegation
Aarhus had two points more than both EH Aalborg and Skanderborg going into the last round but as EH Aalborg and Skanderborg won their matches at the bottom of the league
EH Aalborg surprisingly won 32-30 at home against Sonderjyske, while Skanderborg won more convincingly 36-27 away against Bjerringbro
Team Esbjerg secured second spot in the regular season thanks to a last-gasp equalizer from Sarah Dekker against Ikast Handball to make it 28-28

and therefore I am also ready for a new adventure after the summer
I will do everything to finish as well as possible"
and in that time she has experienced a bit of everything
Two nasty cruciate ligament injuries and a comeback to handball when most people thought it was impossible
But you get far with will and a great love for handball
and she has played at an amazingly high level especially in the autumn," says Trine Nielsen
"Now the adventure must have a new chapter
While I am really sad that she is leaving Odense Handball
I am also proud of the part that the club has played in her way to the top"
Helena Elver and Odense have so far won all their matches in the Danish league this season and they are also among the favourites to win the Champions League trophy this season
Inside the Wind Turbine: A Tour of a Manufacturing Marvel
Over the course of a chilly Danish morning, our group of 45 students had the opportunity to interact with leading Vestas engineers, learn about the company’s latest offshore wind efforts, and tour its manufacturing facility, tracking the development of an offshore wind turbine from start to finish. We were able to physically walk through the process from the intake of turbine components and parts through gearbox assembly, nacelle engineering, hub construction, and blade installation.
The highlight of our visit was an immersive tour through the intricate manufacturing process of Vestas' V174 nacelle, a vital component of the 9.5 MW wind turbines. The nacelle, a housing unit that encapsulates the generator, gearbox, and other key generation and safety components, is the powerhouse of the wind turbine.
The sheer scale and complexity of the manufacturing process left us in awe. The nacelle we observed was destined for an offshore wind field in Taiwan, emphasizing Vestas' global reach and impact in the renewable energy ecosystem.
Second, we were impressed by Vestas’ commitment to quality and efficiency. After our first year course in operations management, we were excited to see process design principles in action. Weekly Kaizen and 5S (Sort-Set-Shine-Standardize-Sustain) reviews demonstrate the company’s commitment to process improvement and excellence. The meticulous process standardization and data tracking of both components and process efficiency was impressively coordinated at such a massive scale.
Finally, we learned that Vestas tests each turbine to ensure it can withstand extreme weather conditions without interruption, stressing each component at 3x the expected load. Vestas discussed their unique partnership structures with their customers and suppliers to ensure the safety and quality of all of its products.
Cultural Dynamics: A Danish Approach to Work-Life Balance
Beyond the impressive machinery and manufacturing prowess, this visit also gave us unique insight into the cultural dynamics that define Vestas' workplace in Denmark. The Danish workers, we learned, exhibit a unique satisfaction with their jobs. In a country renowned for its emphasis on work-life balance, Vestas takes it to another level – employees work a maximum of 35 hours per week, although we met many people who noted they work longer because of their passion for their jobs.
We were struck by the lack of strict guidelines on breaks or vacation. Instead, Danish workers operate with a sense of responsibility and autonomy, knowing when to complete their tasks efficiently. This approach fosters a work environment where individuals take ownership of their roles, contributing to the overall success of Vestas in the renewable energy sector.
Conclusion: A Student's Perspective on Climate Change and Vestas' Impact
