The Aalborg defense struggled to contain the Skanderborg back line while goalkeeper Niklas Landin was far from his best between the posts as Emil Laerke and Kristjan Kristjansson really turned on the heat for the home side
Aalborg were basically hit by a defensively rock-solid brick wall which time and time again spoiled the rhythm for the visitiors who got increasingly frustrated during the first half and Skanderborg went in for the interval with a 16-11 lead at hand
and Skanderborg extended the lead to six goals before Aalborg finally seemed to wake up
The league leaders suddently got their attacking game plan going as Thomas Arnoldsen revealed why he is a big target for most European top clubs
Midway through the second half it looked like a superp comeback was in the cards when Aalborg took the lead after 49 minutes
But the home team had plenty of energy left in the tank and after Laerke scored three goals in a row and Jeppe Cieslak brought Skanderborg decisively ahead by three goals with three minutes to go
the tide finally turned decisively in favour of the home side

Henning Larsen has won a competition to design Højvangen Church, the first church to be built in Skanderborg Parish in over 500 years
set to be completed and inaugurated by December 2024
will be a new public gathering point in the growing residential area of Højvangen in Skanderborg
Courtesy of Henning Larsen With the new church in Højvangen, we want to be true to the theological tradition and at the same time reinterpret the church as a destination for present and future needs; a place that can accommodate both everyday life and celebrations, joy and mourning across generations. -- partner Nina la Cour Sell.
Designed as a squared pavilion from the outside, with an activated façade on all sides, the project is connected to an existing church center through a partially underground corridor. The colonnaded “backside” façade takes on covered seating niches while its undulating form changes in appearance according to the time of day and lighting conditions.

When a Danish town looked to upgrade its wastewater treatment plant
a solution was found in the Densadeg XRC* Extreme-rate Clarifier from SUEZ
This provided CSO treatment capacity and reduced phosphorus discharging into the local lakes and waterways
The Danish town of Skanderborg is situated on the north and northeastern banks of Skanderborg Lake in the Lake District of Central Jutland
clean and safe recreational waters is a high priority and crucial for sustaining tourism
the region has faced increased flooding and water quality threats
Urbanization and an expanding sewer network also stretched the capacity of the the Skanderborg wastewater treatment plant
extreme rain events or surges in loading to the treatment plant
such as during the annual Skanderborg Festival
could overwhelm the plant’s main treatment line
and nutrient discharges to local water resources
Skanderborg Utility initiated a project in partnership with other organizations to clean Svanesø Lake
which improved water quality and helped to restore the lake’s ecosystem
both Svanesø and Skanderborg lakes remained vulnerable to wastewater overflows and phosphorus pollution
This became a bigger problem in more recent years as the Skanderborg region began to experience higher rainfall and more extreme rain events
overloading to the treatment plant resulted in 10-15 CSO events per year
as much as 30 kg of phosphorus could discharge into Svanesø Lake
To prevent unsanitary wastewater discharges and protect the region’s lakes
and ecosystems from phosphorus pollution into the future
Skanderborg Utility turned its focus to upgrading its wastewater treatment plant
Skanderborg Utility had to account for a crucial
The area around the treatment plant had become built out as Skanderborg urbanized
The utility was therefore compelled to identify a viable replacement technology that could increase the hydraulic capacity of the treatment plant within the existing footprint
the treatment plant would have to be moved to a new location
Founded as a public-private partnership between locally based water sector companies
AquaGlobe acts as a focal point for testing water technologies and strives to connect the most innovative and ambitious actors in the water sector to provide solutions for helping solve global water challenges.Through the AquaGlobe partnership
Skanderborg Utility evaluated and compared a range of treatments to determine the most fitting technology to address their unique requirements
This vetting process revealed the performance and combined benefits of the Densadeg XRC* Extreme-rate Clarifier from SUEZ
the first global technology reference of the Densadeg XRC
Skanderborg Utility will provide CSO treatment capacity at their plant and significantly reduce phosphorus loading to the surrounding lakes and waterways
single treatment line incorporating sand filters was designed with a hydraulic capacity of 1000 m3/hour
the hydraulic capacity during normal operation is boosted to 1,250 m3/hour
the Densadeg XRC functioning as the last treatment step for removing phosphorus
the Skanderborg Utility can switch to an alternative mode of operation where the Densadeg XRC functions exclusively for treating CSO water
which previously would have bypassed the wastewater plant without treatment
The line treating CSO water is designed with a hydraulic capacity up to 1,500 m3/hour
the main treatment line will still be active treating normal flow at a hydraulic capacity up to 1,250 m3/hour
but without the tertiary Densadeg XRC step
Replacing sand filters with the Densadeg XRC is also expected to significantly improve the overall energy efficiency of the plant
the Densadeg XRC technology will play a major role in the journey towards more intelligent control of the treatment processes by allowing a shorter path between measurement and chemical dosing

We might not know exactly what happened on this battlefield in Denmark
In a new study
archaeologists present their collective findings for one of the most spectacular archaeological excavations on Danish soil at Alken Enge wetland
A mass grave in the small East Jutland town of Alken contains the human remains of a battle
where 13-year-old children fought alongside adult men
where the dead were left and ripped to pieces by hungry animals
and where the bones where subsequently collected and treated in the most bestial way
One of the most startling discoveries was the four pelvic bones mounted on a stick
“A very strange feeling descended on the excavation when we found them
It clearly shows acts that when you think about them
really makes your hairs bristle,” says Mads Kähler Holst
director at the Moesgaard Museum and lead-author on the study
“It became very quiet at the excavation that day,” says excavation leader and co-author Ejvind Hertz from Museum Skanderborg
Read More: An entire army sacrificed in a bog
Archaeologists have discovered 2,095 bones and fragments so far at Alken Enge
But they have not yet excavated the entire site
human remains still lay buried in the moss
we still know very little about these people who lost their lives in battle
Radiocarbon analyses show that all of the bones originate from a large event early in the first century CE when historical sources recount an upsurge in violence across Europe
But archaeologists did not know who these people were
“There are no Roman written sources in Scandinavia that can tell us what happened,” says Hertz
Read More: Ancient Roman artifact found on Danish island
Researchers are confident that Alken Enge was not the site of a clash between the Romans and Germanic tribes in Scandinavia
violent clashes between Germanic tribes and Romans occurred as the Roman Empire expanded north
which ended in Germanic victory according to the history books
But it wasn’t unusual to see fighting among the Germanic tribes when the Roman threat to their territories was absent
“We’re quite convinced that these people didn’t come from southern Europe because we’d probably see it in the skeletons
They could on the other hand have come from anywhere north of the Alps
We simply don’t know,” says Hertz

The remains at Alken Enge tell a unique story about Iron Age power structures
says archaeologist Katrine Balsgaard Juul from Vejle Museums
Alken Enge is the only archaeological example of an entire army preserved anywhere in Europe
and the large collection of human remains indicates an unprecedented level of power
“It’s a really interesting discovery
We can use it to set all of our postholes and farms in perspective,” she says
“We’re always interested in finding out how we went from small origins to a more formal structure
Alken shows that at this time there was a form of organisation over large geographical regions,” says Juul
Read More: The biggest status symbol in the Nordic Iron Age was a goose
imagine just how many villages it would have taken to build such an army
Each village probably consisted of three or five houses
with between eight and fifteen inhabitants—men
That is approximately between 24 and 75 people per village
so that is somewhere between ten and forty potential warriors per village
Most of the Alken warriors were between the ages of 20 and 40
and just under 5 per cent of them were not yet 20
The youngest remains were of 13-year-old boys
“If we say that at least 380 men died in this case
It would require lots of villages to procure such an army
You can imagine it would have [involved] a very large region
which would have lost a lot of young men after the fight
It must have been very dramatic,” says Juul
Read More: Archaeologists excavate 400 Iron Age houses in Denmark
The excavation has also revealed new details about the injuries recorded in the bones
others by subsequent treatment that may well be associated with a sacrificial ritual at the bog
Skulls were crushed and two deep grooves were cut into the insides of pelvic bones
“It’s hard to imagine an injury like that during battle
We think it must have occurred afterwards,” says Hertz
Almost none of the bones showed any signs of previous
Meaning that these men had most probably never seen war before
and from really young to relatively old,” he says
Read More: Vikings versus Iron Age: Who made the best swords?
The dead appear to have been left on the battlefield for as long as one year before being collected and carried to the bog at Alken Enge
During this time the bodies would have been eaten by animals and decomposed until only skeletons remained
“These people met an incredibly violent end by battle
I think that’s interesting,” says Juul
and suggests that the war was so devastating that they were simply unable to deal with the dead afterwards
It appears that Alken Enge was sparsely populated after the event
What was once farmland turned to forest after the battle
But there could be another explanation: A final snub from a vanquished foe
“It’s about the worst thing you could imagine: To not be buried or handled correctly after death and so to be denied access to the afterlife
Read More: English mass grave contains remains of Viking Great Army
Until now the Germanic tribe’s beastly treatment of remains after war had an almost a mystical status
the treatment of the bones and the fact that they were moved to a special place in the landscape—a strip of land by Denmark’s fourth largest lake
near Alken—suggests a very deliberate action
“It helps to underline that it has something to do with religion,” says Holst
Although the lack of written sources means that the researchers do not know which god or gods were the beneficiaries of such a ritual
Read More: Archaeological discovery in Sweden reveals site of Stone Age rituals
Alken Enge is a dream excavation for archaeologists
“All archaeologists have at least one thing on their bucket list and to excavate something like this
It really is a once in a lifetime experience for an archaeologist to be able to take part in such an excavation,” he says

schmidt hammer lassen wins skanderborg sports + administration centreall images courtesy of schmidt hammer lassen architects
skanderborg is set to receive a new community sports and administration centre. the scheme designed by schmidt hammer lassen, in collaboration with contractor KPC A/S and engineering company bascon A/S
will see 18,000 square metres serve as a multifunctional building
that will stand as a dynamic and vibrant gathering point for inhabitants of the danish city
that remains close to its natural surroundings
the structure will be divided into four distinct zones: a meeting centre
sports facilities that will consist of two handball fields — having the potential to open towards the outdoor landscape
providing the possibility of indoor and outdoor events to take place — with the total seating capacity of 1,700 spectators
and administrative offices with 700 work spaces; all linked by outdoor arrival areas
that will run throughout the entire complex
the latter program will offer direct views into the hall of the city council and athletic areas
to emphasize this interaction between architecture and nature
schmidt hammer lassen have taken several sustainable measures into the conception of the skanderborg sports and administration centre
this will be evidenced in their optimization of daylight and natural ventilation through the implementation of an efficient building envelope
in addition to green plants integrated into selected façades as solar screening
that will ultimately increase biodiversity and contribute to a good internal climate
the building will serve as a vibrant meeting point for the community
‘with our project we create an architectural reinterpretation of the contact point between citizens and the municipality
the functions of the building are open and accessible and the project makes good use of the great potential of the surrounding landscape‘
founding partner at schmidt hammer lassen architects
‘it is a place where citizens meet and interact in an open and dynamic setting – in the middle of nature.’
‘the landscape plays an active part in how to experience the entire complex
we create a place where inside and outside merge – a place that invites active use and relaxation – both during and after opening hours‘

A Danish bog has been harbouring a terrifying secret for thousands of years
Archaeologists have spent all summer excavating a small sample of what has turned out to be a mass grave containing skeletal remains from more than 1,000 warriors
who were killed in battle some 2,000 years ago
“We found a lot more human bones than we had expected,” says Ejvind Hertz
The discovery of the many Iron Age bones has attracted international attention
partly because the body parts are macabre per se
but also because the bones are surprisingly well preserved
the find confirms a Roman source’s description of the Teutons’ atrocious war practices
The site is located in the Alken Enge wetlands near Lake Mossø on the Jutland peninsula
the Alken warriors are thought to have been sacrificed to some gods
which we’re not very familiar with today
The bones ended up in the bog at a time when it wasn’t a bog; rather
created by a tongue of land jutting into the lake
The archaeologists have so far only excavated an area of 80-90 square metres
although the site stretches over an area of 3,600 square metres
Excavations in wetlands are very expensive
since water needs to be constantly pumped out
the finds are so densely concentrated that it takes a long time to get through all the layers
The area that has so far been excavated contained bone fragments from around 240 men aged between 13 and 45
The men’s bones are marked by melee weapons such as swords and axes
The unexcavated basin in the bog stretches over a huge area covering almost 40 hectare and is believed to contain the remains of more than 1,000 warriors
When asked how the archaeologists can tell that this many warriors are buried there
Hertz says: “We know that people who cut peat here in the 19th and 20th centuries found bone fragments
We’ve also made test excavations in the basin.”
The archaeologists did not find complete skeletons
They can see that the bog contains many different individuals
The army beneath the bog may have been defeated and killed in a battlefield located far away from Alken Wetlands
it must have been a massive logistical task for Iron Age people to transport the bones to the lake
The researchers cannot say how this may have come about or where the battle took place
Many of the archaeological finds in the area stem from armies that came from afar
The sacrificed army was discovered in an area which has turned out to be brimming with archaeological treasures
Here archaeologists have found around 15,000 objects – mainly weapons sacrifices from the Iron Age
But carbon 14 analyses have revealed that none of these finds could have been weapons belonging to the sacrificed army in Alken
the battlefield may have been located right next to the sacrificial site
“The bones have been sacrificed months or even years after the warriors were killed
We won’t know until the bones have been carefully analysed,” says the curator
we can see that the bones have bite marks on them
and parts of the joints have been gnawed off
So there’s no doubt that predators have been in contact with the body parts.”
The marks from the predators’ bite indicate that the dead warriors were left to die and rot on the battlefield
without anyone bothering to bury or even remove the bodies
This confirms parts of what a Roman source wrote about war practices among Northern Europeans in the period around the time of the birth of Christ
One of the greatest historians of the Roman Empire
Tacitus (56 AD – 120 AD) described the aftermath of the Roman’s famous defeat in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD
“In the middle of the plain, bones lay either spread out or heaped, depending on whether they had fled or resisted. Next to the bones lay bits of spears and horse limbs, and there were also human heads nailed to trees.
