official website: “Vojens is a technical track which will be an exciting challenge for me which I would like to be a part of and do my part to win the Danish championship with next year of course it also played a role that Vojens will host the last and decisive Speedway GP in 2025.” Lebedevs has emerged as one of Latvia’s top sporting names and lifted his second Speedway European Championship this year to extend his stay in the Speedway GP series into 2025 The country’s first full-time Speedway GP rider is determined to continue bringing success to his homeland He said: “Ice hockey and football are very important in Latvia but if we can do well – as a nation – in the FIM Speedway of Nations and FIM Speedway World Cup then it will really mean something because the Latvian sports fans title No.6 Zmarzlik finished second in the Deluxe Homeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens on Saturday with Great Britain racer Robert Lambert powering to his first-ever SGP victory at Denmark’s national speedway stadium With a 22-point lead over Lambert in the Speedway GP standings, Zmarzlik heads to the final round at Polish track Torun on September 28 to collect an historic fifth World Championship gold medal and his third in as many years The 29-year-old became only the second rider in speedway history to win three FIM Speedway World Championships on the bounce matching New Zealand legend Ivan Mauger’s World Final hat-trick Zmarzlik is now tied on five world titles with Swedish icon Ove Fundin and stands just one short of the record haul of six, shared by Mauger and Swedish legend Tony Rickardsson The Pole now has plenty of time to celebrate title No.5 But asked about the prospect of taking his place in FIM Speedway’s most elite club alongside Mauger and Rickardsson Zmarzlik admits speculation about his next historic achievement is nothing new to him.  “I knew this question will be coming up again!” he smiled I will 100 percent get it again after winning five ‘I must do it,’ only ‘I can do it.’ I love racing on the bike and what I do in the future “Today was one example – big congratulations to Robert [Lambert] It was his first time winning a Speedway GP round I know the feeling and I say to him that the first time is always the best feeling.”  Zmarzlik’s triumph comes just 12 months after he was disqualified from the 2023 Deluxe Homeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens for wearing a race suit that did not comply with the rules during Qualifying Practice The Pole is understandably much happier to be hitting the road with a fifth world title to celebrate this time around He added: “This is an unbelievable night after what happened last season in this place “But now I have taken this championship before the last round and that’s very good for me because now I have a bit of an easier life until March “I am very happy because I am the first rider to win three world titles in a row in the history of the Speedway GP series I love to do something different in the sport Denmark’s biggest motorsport event was raced in front of a sizeable 15,378-strong crowd which is the club’s highest attendance since Jacob Olsen took over leadership of the storied Vojens Speedway Center from his three-time FIM Speedway world champion father Ole The venue celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025 All eyes were on Zmarzlik as he lined up alongside Lambert needing at least first or second place in the final The Brit produced a sublime start to get the better of his rival going into bend one he got the better of third-placed Maciej Janowski and fourth-placed Andzejs Lebedevs who also made history as Latvia’s first-ever Speedway GP finalist But it was Zmarzlik who had the most to celebrate as he delivered another moment of glory He said: “My brother Pawel said it didn’t matter what place I got today but he also told me that if I finished one position behind Robert this would be the most important plan for the final “I made a little bit of a mistake from the start and I felt the title was coming to me.”  Deluxe Homeart FIM Danish Speedway GP winner Lambert is now guaranteed at least a Speedway GP World Championship bronze medal – his first-ever podium finish in the series He goes into the season-closing DeWalt FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Torun on September 28 placed second in the overall standings on 137 points – putting him 10 clear of third-placed Swedish star Fredrik Lindgren on 127 who scored three championship points in Vojens A top-six finish in Torun would guarantee Lambert the silver medal and he admits there were tears of joy as he sealed his first-ever SGP victory on his 10th final appearance.  It comes as a relief to finally get it done and stop the talk going around about it I am so happy at the moment and this trophy is going nowhere It’s going to be sticking with me for a long time but I progressed and went in the right direction with the bike and that’s what we have been missing a few times we had the bike setup for most of the night went a few steps back and then not enough steps forward to make it happen in the final “I am really happy with the way we all worked as a team I am sure I will be lying in the bed in the van not getting much sleep after all of this excitement.”  Polish star Janowski continued his strong finish to 2024 by celebrating his first Speedway GP final since 2022 after never previously making even the semi-finals in Vojens He said: “The end of the season has been pretty good for me It’s very good to be back on the podium in Speedway GP “I am very happy because Vojens never used to be a good place for me I am happy that I have finally scored good points here Fourth-placed Lebedevs could seal his spot in the 2025 Speedway GP series next Saturday, when he defends a six-point lead at the final Speedway European Championship round in Chorzow, Poland The continental champion is guaranteed a spot in the following season’s SGP series having broken new ground in his debut year on the sport’s biggest stage Latvia’s trailblazing first-ever Speedway GP finalist is determined to extend his stay at this level The next goal was to make my first final before the end of the season “I couldn’t do it at my home round in Riga last weekend He has been in Speedway GP for a long time and you can see the finals and podiums he has achieved in his career have been very hard coming.  I am looking forward and hopefully I can keep my place in Speedway GP for next season and have good results from the beginning in 2025.”  Returning Speedway GP star Anders Thomsen is back with Vojens club Sonderjylland Elite Speedway for 2025 and insists he “can't imagine being anywhere else in the Danish league.” Thomsen captained the team to third place in this year’s Danish Speedwayligaen and has become a popular figure at Vojens Speedway Center – venue for the Deluxe Homeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens His return to SES means he will have home advantage for the final Speedway GP of 2025 on a high-stakes weekend when three champions will be crowned September 12 and the Speedway GP and SGP4 events on Saturday Thomsen secured his return to the Speedway GP line-up with second place at the FIM SGP Challenge in Pardubice on October 4 and as he prepares for his SGP comeback after a season away he’s also looking forward to captaining SES He said: “I have been with SES since the beginning and can't imagine being anywhere else in the Danish league “We had a frustrating start to the season with seven defeats in a row but still made it through the semi-finals and ended up with bronze but this particular one has a special place in my heart.” Thomsen is not expecting a testing time as captain in 2025 and an excellent mix of experience and young talent so I don't need to run around the pit area and play boss we are good at giving each other support and good advice so I am already looking forward to a new season where SES will have a better start than we had this year.” Thirty years on from the very first SGP series in 1995, the 2025 Speedway GP world champion will be crowned over 10 epic rounds with action taking place across seven The four-day event to crown the 2022 world team champions will still be raced from July 27-30 but will now take place at the home of the FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens – sponsored by ECCO The change was necessary as EMS Event AsP chief executive officer Lars Guldager Dyhr stepped down from his position due to ill health and the board of directors from that company was unable to continue to run the event We wish him all the best for a speedy recovery We thank our partners at Vojens Speedway Center for being willing to step up and host the event at such short notice and look forward to working with them to make the first FIM SON of the new era under global promoter Discovery Sports Events a great success Vojens Speedway Center is located just 71km from Esbjerg’s Granly Speedway Arena and it is hoped this will cause as little disruption as possible to both teams and supporters’ travel plans Ticket information will be announced very soon The draw and format of the FIM SON remains unchanged The top three countries from each Semi-Final join hosts Denmark in the FIM SON Final on Saturday Squads for the FIM SON will be announced later this week Vojens boss Jacob Olsen Speedway in Denmark's top tier as well as the venue’s First Division team won the 2022 FIM Speedway Youth World Championship in Wroclaw before winning bronze in the 2023 FIM SGP3 competition in Malilla last July – following that with a gold medal in the European 250cc Championship The son of former Speedway GP winner Brian Andersen is being tipped to reach the sport’s biggest stage himself one day And Olsen is determined to ensure he develops his considerable talent in the right way at Vojens Speedway Center He said: “Mikkel Andersen is an historical talent and we want to help develop him in a safe environment “There is a good chemistry between the Andersen family and my team Mikkel Andersen can become a very big asset for Danish speedway We don't have to tell him that all the time.” Olsen’s former Coventry teammate Brian Andersen believes starting his professional career at Vojens is the ideal move for Mikkel He said: “It's important for Mikkel to have the same home ground both in the Speedwayligaen and in the First Division and with the fine facilities at Vojens Speedway Center and the staff at SES I feel like we've ended up in just the right place.” Danish champion Anders Thomsen is set for an overnight stay in hospital after being left concussed following a first-turn clash with Mikkel Michelsen while the European champion has concerns over a knee injury The duo crashed in the opening exchanges of race four in Vojens as host club Sønderjylland Elite Speedway defeated visitors Slangerup 42-40 According to SES rider Thomsen’s official Facebook page the rider was knocked unconscious “for a few minutes.” He was taken to hospital for checks and will remain there overnight for observation The page confirmed: “Anders has been through a medical check at the hospital Anders has suffered concussion and is hospitalised until tomorrow.” Slangerup star Michelsen is set to return to Poland where he will undergo an MRI scan on his knee the Rybnik-based racer wrote: “Feeling okay but the knee is not well Heading to Poland for MRI scan and check-ups in the morning.” Both riders will be determined to recover in time for the 3W FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Gorzow on June 25 World No.2 Leon Madsen has completed a blockbuster move to Vojens club Sonderjylland Elite Speedway for the rest of 2023 – and he’s joined by 2022 SGP3 champion Mikkel Andersen Madsen steps into the SES Danish Speedwayligaen side to replace Anders Thomsen who is sidelined after suffering a hand injury at the OlyBet FIM Speedway GP of Latvia – Riga last Saturday.  who suffered a broken C3 vertebra in his neck in Poland and confirmed he faces around two months on the sidelines Madsen returns to Danish racing after Brovst club Nordjyske Elite Sport withdrew from the league ahead of the season leaving the rider with only a job at Polish side Czestochowa With the FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens fast approaching on September 16 Madsen believes the move could offer him the ideal preparation for the nation’s biggest speedway event He said: “I am very happy to have the opportunity to ride in the Danish league I also see an opportunity to be better equipped for the three remaining Speedway GP rounds the penultimate of which will be run at Vojens Speedway Center.” SES director Jacob Olsen believes that Leon Madsen can have a decisive role in the club’s efforts to retain the championship they won in 2022 He said: “We have been looking for a Danish rider as a replacement and Leon Madsen is the country's best rider so we are proud to be able to have him on the team for the decisive matches.” Andersen has been racing for Vojens in the Danish First Division – the nation’s second tier debuts for SES alongside Madsen against Slangerup at Vojens Speedway Center on August 23 World No.2 Leon Madsen was elated to realise his Vojens dream as he became the first home winner of the DeluxeHomeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark since 2015 on Saturday Madsen sent Denmark’s packed national speedway stadium into raptures as he overhauled Swedish star Fredrik Lindgren to win a dramatic final showdown with Australia’s Jack Holder third and Great Britain star Robert Lambert fourth The two-time Speedway GP silver medallist celebrated wildly with the locals as he achieved his first SGP victory since 2019 – the night he won the FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Torun with an unforgettable seven-ride maximum He is the first Danish rider to win a home Speedway GP since Peter Kildemand topped the podium in Horsens in 2015 Madsen managed just two championship points at the FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Cardiff on September 2 He was delighted to bounce back in style and move up to seventh place on 95 points – just two short of the top-six automatic qualification places going into the final round in Torun on September 30 The Vejle-born racer said: “It feels amazing I am just so happy to have bounced back after that terrible meeting in Cardiff “I know the Danish fans have been longing for a Danish winner in Vojens It was such a hectic race in the final and I just managed to find a way through and win it “I have been struggling so hard all season on the slick tracks I think Vojens has been the slickest track on the calendar this year so we are definitely going in the right direction and it made a huge difference on the track It’s not just something we say – one or two changes on the bike really can make a huge difference on the track We really had to work hard to find the right setup and I feel we are going in the right way with that “I was also happy to see so many fans up here in Vojens supporting me and the rest of the Danish guys “I have been dreaming about winning in Vojens for many years but it was just amazing to win it this time.  “I am very happy and hopefully we can keep going forward and be more stable next year Hopefully then I can get back up the top and fight for the World Championship.”  Lindgren’s 18-point haul for finishing second saw the Swede reduce his Lublin’s teammate’s championship lead from 24 to six ahead of the title decider in Torun While Lindgren took no pleasure in seeing his rival ruled out he was determined to focus on the task in hand as he bids to become Sweden’s first world champion since Tony Rickardsson clinched his sixth and final Speedway GP World Championship in 2005 – 18 years ago Lindgren said: “When I came back from the autograph sessions I got the news that Bartosz was not going to ride “I had to try and re-group and focus on tonight and what I had to do on the track but I managed to get to the semi and the final I was leading and I thought I could clinch it “I am just going to go to Torun and do the best I can I am six points down and it’s not that easy to get that back Third-placed Holder was elated with his second straight Speedway GP podium Having missed round seven in Riga with a broken wrist and bounced back with a second place in Cardiff on September 2 the Appin-born racer was pleased to pull level on 113 points with third-placed Martin Vaculik in the battle for bronze While the Slovak star is placed higher by virtue of his two Speedway GP wins in Prague and Cardiff Holder is determined to overhaul his rival on long-time former Polish home track Torun he said: “I am super stoked to be on the podium again Legendary Danish club Vojens prestigious event to be lost to Denmark I want Danish speedway to grow and be on the map with big events I also really want the Danish riders to do well with the whole history of success we have in Danish speedway “It would have been a big blow if this event had been taken out of Denmark to another nation I didn’t want the FIM SON to disappear out of the country “It all went quite crazy when (head of DSE) François Ribeiro called me 19 days before the Speedway of Nations It was very sad that Esbjerg couldn’t push through the event I was on holiday in Spain with my family and our company manager Helge Frimodt Pedersen was at his summer house Our stadium operator Jens Jorgen Forum was on holiday in the US I asked him if he would give us one day and then we would come back to him if we could do it We called the day after and said: ‘let’s go for it.’ Then the work really began “We have talked a lot about it since the event We can’t understand how we made the event so great We got so much respect from the FIM and Discovery for the work and effort we put into it I am very delighted for not only me and the company Olsen says the FIM Speedway Local Organiser of the Year award caps off a special 2022 season for Vojens He said: “I am very delighted to get the prize It’s quite special with Discovery coming on board and all these new things that are happening in the sport 2022 was quite a special season for us at Vojens The Speedway GP event was great – probably the best event we have had so far with everything Discovery brings – the fanzone and whole setup made it really fantastic The racing was some of the best we have had in Vojens for many years we won the Danish Championship with our league team Sønderjylland Elite Speedway It was history for us because that was the first time Vojens has ever won the championship in the Danish league “That gives us a bit of confidence and we have had an increase in crowds by about 30 percent said: “Staging an event with a year to plan and work on the arrangements is no easy task To deliver the FIM Speedway of Nations – four nights of racing with just 19 days to make it happen is astonishing “With vast experience of staging big events and their incredible professionalism we had every confidence Vojens could deliver a successful FIM SON and we were all rewarded with some epic racing and also a big thank you to all of our local organisers who work so hard to make FIM Speedway events possible.” Vojens is set to stage two high-stakes nights of racing in September with the penultimate round of the FIM Speedway Grand Prix series taking place there on Saturday when this year’s FIM Speedway Under-21 world champion will be crowned at the FIM SGP2 of Denmark – Vojens – the final round of the SGP2 series “This is going to be a big year too,” Olsen said We are delighted that we are going to have SGP2 in Vojens on the Friday We have some really good Danish riders coming through and we are also very happy we can crown the world champion in SGP2 here “We have three really good Danish riders in Speedway GP this year with Leon Madsen as last year’s runner-up and Anders Thomsen and Mikkel Michelsen who have a bit more experience in the series now “I think Denmark will be very strong in the coming season and with Nicki Pedersen coming in as team manager I think it’s one of the best moves we have made in the sport for a long time.” Polish star Mateusz Cierniak bids to sign off a stellar junior career with back-to-back FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championships in the Jørgen Hansen Biler FIM SGP2 of Denmark sensational seven-ride maximum on June 23 Cierniak holds a 10-point advantage over Australian Under-21 champion Keynan Rew in second and Polish Under-21 champion Bartlomiej Kowalski in third – both of an under-21 rider He has already sealed DeWalt FIM Speedway of Nations – SON2 gold with Poland in the sport’s under-21 team championship in Riga on August 11 and now he is bidding to complete a has contested since 2021 as well as registering a second and a third place Rew and Kowalski will be poised to try and capitalise Kowalski finished second at this year’s opening round in Prague on June 2 with Rew taking the runner-up spot in Gorzow last time They also face competition in the race for the rostrum from Danish young gun Emil Breum who is fourth in the standings on 26 points The Esbjerg rider was leading the final at round two in Gorzow only for Cierniak to fight his way through for victory with Rew sneaking past for second place on the final turn But with just four points separating him from Rew and Kowalski in second and third will also be in the hunt for a podium finish Breum was crowned Danish Under-21 champion in Holsted last Friday and he is joined in flying the home flag by the Vojens club won its first Danish Speedwayligaen title since its relaunch League racing returned to the Vojens Speedway Center in 2021 after a 10-year break and the club narrowly missed out on the title last year But they made no mistake on home shale this time around as Zagar led SES to victory in the Super Final on 42 points Holsted (30) and Esbjerg (29) in the four-team tournament was backed up by a 10-point haul from Danish international Nicolai Klindt while Mads Hansen followed up his Speedway GP debut in Malilla on Saturday with eight points SGP2 star Benjamin Basso and Jesper Knudsen scored six each Former Speedway GP winner Michael Jepsen Jensen led the Slangerup scoring on 11 points in the injured Mikkel Michelsen’s absence Vojens Speedway GP wild card Rasmus Jensen and former Swedish champion Jacob Thorssell topped the Holsted scorechart on nine apiece Former Danish champion Niels-Kristian Iversen and Grzegorz Zengota collected nine each for Esbjerg Danish racer Leon Madsen hopes to build on his Vojens Speedway GP magic by racing a full season for Sonderjylland Elite Speedway in 2024 Madsen agreed a late-season deal with Vojens Speedway Center’s Danish Speedwayligaen team SES following injuries to both Anders Thomsen and Nicolai Klindt The move was made in a bid to gain him some extra track time at the venue ahead of the 2023 DeluxeHomeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens and it paid off spectacularly as Madsen sent Vojens wild with a popular home win Now he’s determined to become even better on Denmark’s national speedway track as he joins former Speedway GP rival Thomsen plus Australia’s Keynan Rew and Poland’s Marcin Nowak in going for title glory with SES He said: “I would love to win team gold with SES next year Jacob Olsen and I have developed a good collaboration “My chances of winning the SGP are also increased with the association with SES because in the past tracks like Vojens have not been my best.  and I might not have won the Danish Grand Prix in 2023 if I hadn’t had races for SES before the Grand Prix.” Vojens boss Jacob Olsen is pleased to see Madsen racing on in Denmark in 2024 He said: “It is great that the country’s biggest international profile is also going to compete in the Danish league I think we will have a very exciting season in 2024 and personally I would very much like to contribute to Leon Madsen becoming our next world champion which will also rub off on the entire SES squad.” Double FIM SGP2 world champion Mateusz Cierniak admits he feared he would “lose everything” after holding on to retain his FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship in dramatic style in Vojens Cierniak led an unforgettable Polish one-two-three on 49 points with Jørgen Hansen Biler FIM SGP2 of Denmark – Vojens winner Damian Ratajczak who topped the podium in the final round to snatch silver on 45 Bartlomiej Kowalski took the bronze medal on 42 – pipping Australian Under-21 champion Keynan Rew (41) to third place by one point Lublin and Lejonen racer Cierniak went into the Vojens round with a 10-point lead over Rew and Kowalski and the Tarnow-born star just needed to avoid last place in semi-final one to seal the SGP2 crown But disaster struck when Cierniak’s front wheel caught the bottom tape with referee Craig Ackroyd forced to disqualify him from the re-run Victory in the final for either Rew or Kowalski would have seen the title snatched away from Cierniak who won the opening two rounds in Prague and Gorzow – the second of those with a sensational seven-ride maximum But both riders finished third in their semi-final missing out on qualification for the final The 20-year-old is only the fourth double FIM Speedway Under-21 world champion in history following in the footsteps of former world No.3 Emil Sayfutdinov Aussie icon Darcy Ward and Polish star Maksym Drabik Despite being tipped as red-hot favourite to grab gold Cierniak feared his tapes slip-up had cost him junior speedway’s biggest prize.  He said: “Everyone was telling me over the last few weeks No-one will take this from you.’ But I was telling everyone this very short moment before the tapes went up in the semi-final was very long waiting and maybe I was a little bit too nervous I hit one tape in this heat and now it’s possible to lose everything.’ For sure luck smiled on me and Bartek and Keynan had pressure too They knew what was at stake and now I have been working for all season.”  Cierniak graduates from the under-21 class at the end of this season and is now setting his sights on Speedway GP qualification in the years to come But he is not ready to rush such a big step in his burgeoning career he admitted: “Of course I want to be there but now I don’t think I have enough experience Reaching Speedway GP would pit Cierniak against Zmarzlik who could become a four-time world champion in Saturday’s DeluxeHomeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens broke off from his preparations to support Cierniak in the SGP2 pits Cierniak was pleased to have his Lublin and Lejonen teammate’s input through the biggest meeting of his career so far as he benefitted from the experience of performing on the same stage the Speedway GP stars will grace on Saturday He said: “We speak about everything during the meeting We were speaking about what we must do and what we can do with the bike Cierniak was delighted to share the podium with international teammates Ratajczak and Kowalski “Bartek and I started racing together in Tarnow It’s very good to stand on the same World Championship podium as him I also want to say congratulations to Damian “It’s great for the national team and our country and it’s beautiful for Polish speedway Ratajczak was delighted to realise a racing dream and become an FIM SGP2 silver medallist Being here was my goal when I started to race speedway Kowalski had a very turbulent day after crashing during the Vojens practice session early on Friday afternoon so he’s elated to have bagged the bronze medal I would have taken a bronze medal after the practice session for sure so I am very happy that I am sitting here with the bronze medal.  “We have a Polish podium tonight with Mateusz and Damian I remember when I started racing with Mateusz in Tarnow We were both 12 years old and that was a great time It’s great to be together again on the Polish podium.”  Jørgen Hansen Biler FIM SGP2 of Denmark – Vojens runner-up Casper Henriksson was delighted to end his series with a second straight final appearance – taking fifth place in the championship This was some feat after he scored just one point at round one in Prague He said: “Of course it’s better to think about this meeting than the first one I got better and better and I am really happy with the result now “I have taken slow steps every time and in every meeting It’s going the right way and hopefully it stays that way.”  Danish racer William Drejer started the night as first track reserve – meaning he would only race in the event of the main 16 riders in the field suffering an injury or committing a starting offence He scored eight points from four rides – one outing less than the main 16 – to book his place in the semi-finals before charging to a jaw-dropping third place in the final Drejer was stunned to have played such a stellar role in the meeting “Danish team manager Nicki Pedersen told me to do my best to make the starts I tried to do that and hopefully I did it well Getting into SGP2 is my goal for next year.” An epic weekend of racing continues with the DeluxeHomeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens on Saturday night.  Former Speedway GP stars Niels-Kristian Iversen Peter Kildemand and Michael Jepsen Jensen are among the riders bidding for places in this season’s SGP qualifications rounds at Vojens on April 5 Four places in the FIM’s international qualifying rounds will be up for grabs in Denmark’s national qualifier with new national coach Nicki Pedersen set to offer one additional wild card place The country’s entrants for the Speedway European Championship qualifiers will also be decided at the Vojens event It’s unclear whether the top four will contest both the SGP and SEC qualifiers as some riders opt not to do both Mikkel Michelsen and Anders Thomsen will not take part in the qualifiers and must therefore secure a top-six finish in this season’s Speedway GP World Championship to be sure of their places in the 2024 SGP series But Madsen is already guaranteed a place in the SEC series after being crowned champion in 2022 while fellow two-time European champion Michelsen joins him after taking the bronze medal the SEC champion will be handed an automatic place in the 2024 Speedway GP series giving both riders an added incentive to push for European title No.3 Kildemand and Jepsen Jensen will all fight for Speedway GP returns at FIM Danish Speedway GP venue Vojens while Danish champion Rasmus Jensen and fellow Danish international Frederik Jakobsen will be among the favourites Last year’s SGP2 star Benjamin Basso is in the running along with 2021 FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship runner-up Mads Hansen Jesper Knudsen and Matias Nielsen complete the field with Patrick Hansen and Claus Vissing named as reserves The four qualifiers and wild card enter the FIM’s international SGP qualification rounds on May 27 or 29 with the top riders advancing to the FIM GP Challenge at Swedish venue Gislaved on August 19 The top three riders there will be guaranteed places in the 2024 Speedway GP series Polish racer Bartosz Zmarzlik was delighted to defy another of his most testing FIM Speedway Grand Prix tracks to edge closer to his third Speedway GP world title in four years at Vojens on Saturday night The double world champion topped the podium in the FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens winning a hard-fought final ahead of Great Britain hero Robert Lambert third-placed Danish star Leon Madsen and fourth-placed Polish racer Patryk Dudek Zmarzlik collected his second Speedway GP win of 2022 in front of a 12,451-strong crowd at a packed Vojens Speedway Center adding to his triumph at the opening round in Croatia This moves him a massive 20 points clear of second-placed Madsen ahead of the penultimate round of the season – the Kaeser FIM Speedway GP of Sweden – Malilla next Saturday If Zmarzlik leaves Sweden’s biggest speedway event 21 points or more clear of his nearest rival he will be crowned world champion with a round to spare Zmarzlik’s best two rounds of 2022 have come on two of Speedway GP’s tightest and most technically-challenging tracks While he claims Vojens isn’t his favourite circuit on the calendar two wins and a second place in three appearances at Denmark’s home of speedway suggest it suits him well The elated Gorzow star said: “I don’t love this track because this is a very hard track There was only one other winner from gate three Zmarzlik set a new career milestone in Vojens as he achieved his 1,000th Speedway GP championship point He is now on 1,013 from 75 appearances on the sport’s biggest stage Having achieved at least 12 points in all eight rounds so far this season Zmarzlik is pleased with a consistent campaign He said: “Every time this season I have wanted to win but not every round has been as good as this one I am fully focused on every meeting and every heat to score good points “I am very happy about what I have done here all the fans and especially the Polish guys I would like to thank my sponsors and family Zmarzlik made a forceful move to overhaul Lambert on the opening lap of the final shifting his body position furiously to get maximum traction and fly past the Brit Recalling the moment he surged to the front he said: “I was just thinking about my bike and what I must do to make it pull more I just sat back on my seat as much as I could and made sure my bike had good traction but I heard Robert and then knew I was in front.” where he topped the podium in both 2017 and 2021 While he also has the final round in home country Torun on October 1 to complete his title mission the Pole insists he has his sights set solely on the penultimate Speedway GP He said: “I am just fully focused for another round in Malilla and what to do in terms of my engines and setups My first plan is to do a good job in Malilla and score some really good points.” Runner-up Lambert was gutted to run out of room as he achieved his best-ever Speedway GP result only to fall agonisingly short of his maiden victory Lambert said: “I was going for the win and we both went for the same bit of track It’s close racing and with a couple more centimetres But I am happy with a second place and that’s another step forwards after finishing third in Wroclaw.” Two straight Speedway GP podiums have fired Lambert up to fifth place in the standings on 86 points – just five behind Dan Bewley in third – as the Norfolk racer makes a late surge for the medal spots Lambert admits finishing in the top six would justify the SGP Commission’s decision to give him a permanent wild card for 2022 He said: “The goal is to get into the top six and prove the point to the guys who gave me the wild card that I deserved my spot Obviously anything can happen in the last two rounds There is still racing to do and we will see where we finish after Torun.” Lambert delivered a fitting performance on the weekend the United Kingdom mourns the loss of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with everyone at Vojens observing a period of silence ahead of racing and no champagne celebrations as a mark of respect for the monarch’s 70 years of service The former European champion wishes he could have picked up a win on a tough weekend for his country Obviously it is very sad news and you could see we had the moment of silence and no champagne That was very respectful on Discovery’s side “I think everyone appreciated that and it was a great gesture in the Royal Family’s time of mourning.” Third-placed Madsen was delighted with his first-ever Vojens Speedway GP final but was gutted to see Zmarzlik extend his lead from 16 points to 20 as he continues to work towards a title challenge in 2023 The Dane said: “It was nice to finally be in the final here in Vojens It was nice to give something back to all the fans who come and cheer for us It was not so nice to see Bartek make such a good start from gate three “I did my best and it was definitely a step in the right direction I feel we are going in the right direction with the things we are trying now “We have the opportunity to test something given the points gap to Bartek so hopefully it will give me an advantage and I can come out next season even stronger and be at the top “If I can perform like this on a track like Vojens I’m sure it’s going to be a whole different battle next year.” SPEEDWAY GP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: 1 Bartosz Zmarzlik 128 a hugely valuable experience for Kvech who finished fifth at the FIM GP Challenge – the final round of the 2024 Speedway GP qualifiers – in Gislaved on August 19 If Challenge top two Jason Doyle and Martin Vaculik retain their places in the 2023 Speedway GP top six Kvech will become a full-time SGP rider next year Janowski’s place is taken by third substitute Huckenbeck who raced as Wölk FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Teterow wild card this season and previously raced for Vojens club Sønderjylland Elite Speedway Woffinden and Janowski a successful and speedy recovery Speedway GP star Anders Thomsen insists he’s focused on a huge week of racing as he prepares to defend his Danish Championship and go for Gorzow glory – just days after being knocked out on the track in Denmark Thomsen crashed with European champion Mikkel Michelsen at a Danish Speedwayligaen match in Vojens last Wednesday The incident left Michelsen nursing a knee injury and he has withdrawn from the Danish Final at Holsted on Wednesday night as he undergoes intense rehabilitation in a bid to be fit for the 3W FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Gorzow this Saturday Thomsen made a track comeback for Polish club Gorzow last Sunday scoring nine paid 10 points just days after being left unconscious following the crash He is also combining rest and rehabilitation in his quest to compete for what could be a third straight Danish Championship on Wednesday night before he lines up on his Polish home track seeking his third Speedway GP final Thomsen has received plenty of support from Stal Gorzow in his quest to recover He said: “I have been working pretty hard with REHAkompleks in Gorzow to get fit and get back on the bike that’s why I was not really on fire on Sunday But I was in the points and I am pretty satisfied with that but I feel like I can handle the bike well so I will relax over the next couple of days and my head is focused for the Danish Final and also the Gorzow Speedway GP.” Thomsen admits he was “sleeping on the track for 10 or 15 minutes” after his crash with Michelsen But he insists he wasn’t rushed back into action by Stal Gorzow and was happy to return to racing on Sunday afternoon He said: “I only had a headache the day after I spoke with the doctor about whether it was safe to ride and he said ‘if you feel good I would have only ridden a few heats because we have eight riders on the team and Wiktor Jasinski could have taken over from me But I was feeling alright to do all five heats He was there every time I had my treatment and he said ‘Anders Your health is more important.’ There really is no pressure on riders to get back into the squad “I want to say a big thank you to REHAkompleks in Gorzow for getting me back on track and also to Stal Gorzow.” Danish team manager Hans Nielsen is hungry for his first FIM Speedway of Nations gold medal as Vojens Speedway Center stages its biggest pairs event since 1979 from July 27-30 Four-time individual world champion Nielsen joined forces with triple world champion Ole Olsen who built Vojens and put Denmark on the world speedway map to win the 1979 FIM World Pairs Championship at the venue Nielsen went on to win the World Pairs six years in a row from 1986 until 1991 partnering triple world champion Erik Gundersen for the first four victories before winning the last two with 1991 world champion Jan O Pedersen Nielsen also won a record-breaking 11 FIM World Team Cups as a rider but the great man is still waiting for his first gold medal since he took over as Danish boss in 2016 He’s hungry to deliver it when his Danish side lines up in the FIM SON Final on Saturday which has hosted 15 Speedway GPs and four FIM Speedway World Cup Finals stages its biggest pairs event in 43 years Nielsen said: “This is my sixth year as a manager and we haven’t won the SON yet it would be really fitting to win it this year “It has been a while since we had the World Pairs in Denmark in 1979 We won it here that year and we have had some good teams since “It’s great that we have both the SON and the Speedway World Cup The World Cup with four riders and a reserve is always great But the benefit of the SON system is you have more nations involved and it is nice to see other countries becoming quite good like Latvia and France It means we have more teams and it makes the world of speedway more open.” While team riding is banned in Speedway GP – an individual world championship – it is encouraged in the FIM SON as team mates work together to ensure their country scores big and avoids last places Nielsen admits he perfected the art of pairs racing in the UK “We were lucky enough to ride in Britain for so many years,” he said Erik Gundersen and Jan O Pedersen all rode in the UK too and there is a lot more focus there on team riding there – well You learned that by racing in the British league “Not so many of our riders race in the British league now But most of the Danish boys know how to team ride we have it on the agenda – riding in pairs Most of the guys do ride for a team somewhere “Team riding is a fun part of the SON for the public as well When you only had one rider from each team on the track at a time in the SWC Now you do with SON and it’s an added attraction I think.” Vojens Speedway Centre stages four straight nights of epic FIM SON action next week Reigning champions Great 100th anniversary season FIMSpeedway.com looks back at the top five moments celebrated at each of our 2023 FIM Speedway venues we feature the iconic Vojens Speedway Center – Denmark’s home of speedway and venue for the FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens on September 16 NIELSEN TRIUMPHS IN SPEEDWAY GP’S DEBUT SEASON (1995) After losing out on FIM Speedway World Championship gold in a run-off with Tony Rickardsson and Craig Boyce in the last-ever World Final at Vojens in 1994 Hans Nielsen entered the new Speedway GP series determined to make even more history With three World Final wins already under his belt he clinched championship No.4 and the first world title of the Speedway GP era And he also topped the box in front of his home fans at Vojens on September 9 The Professor set the standards alongside arch-rival Erik Gundersen in the 1980s and it was only fitting that he did the same as the sport’s World Championship reverted to a series instead of being decided by a one-day a final Nielsen retired in 1999 but claimed one last FIM Danish Speedway GP win at Vojens in 1998 before saying farewell to the sport from the Speedway GP rostrum there with a World Championship bronze medal in 1999 With a record 22 individual and team world titles he goes down as one of the all-time greats Vojens has provided the stage as numerous stars of the sport made history and two American sensations both inked their name in racing folklore at Denmark’s national speedway stadium Billy Hamill upstaged home hero Nielsen in 1996 winning the FIM Danish Speedway GP to lift the Speedway GP world title Only victory in the final would have been enough after Nielsen won the B final to claim 14 points but Hamill got his hands on the 25 he needed after beating Mark Loram Greg Hancock and Sam Ermolenko in the A final Hamill then shared the Speedway GP World Championship podium with Hancock in 1997 winning silver as Grin led an unforgettable American one-two on the Vojens rostrum Hancock also won two Speedway GP rounds at Vojens – the FIM Danish Speedway GP in 2000 and the 2011 FIM Nordic Speedway GP The second of those tightened his grip on a second world title which he clinched in Croatia – 14 years after lifting his first at Vojens and the 2012 FIM Nordic Speedway GP saw Michael Jepsen Jensen send the home fans wild while leaving national icon Nicki Pedersen heartbroken The triple world champion was leading the final and on course for what would have been his first Speedway GP win on Danish shale That was until MJJ blasted up the inside as they entered the back straight for the last time One magnificent burst of speed carried the young gun to the front and saw him top the podium in the year he also won the Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup with Denmark and the FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship he may have had the momentum needed to pip Chris Holder to the 2012 Speedway GP world title But a fourth World Championship and a Speedway GP win in Denmark continue to elude him Relive MJJ’s win HERE. Having won the FIM Speedway World Pairs alongside Per Jonsson at Vojens in 1993 before clinching his first world title in the last-ever FIM Speedway World Final at Vojens in 1994 Rickardsson turned a venue universally loved by Swedish riders into something of a home track Aside from his second title winning season in 1998 when he finished third at the FIM Danish Speedway GP Rickardsson powered to victories in the 1999 2001 and 2002 events at Vojens as he piled up the Speedway GP World Championship gold medals It almost seemed as if a Rickardsson title win wasn’t complete without a Danish victory and he topped the podium at Copenhagen’s PARKEN stadium in 2005 on his way to title No.6 Polish great Tomasz Gollob enjoyed an unforgettable 2010 season as he ended his country’s 37-year wait for a world title and finally took his rightful place in the sport’s most elite club Gollob took a major stride towards sealing Speedway GP gold when he powered to victory in the FIM Nordic Speedway GP with the holy grail of a seven-ride It was his second Speedway GP maximum of the season after he also won all seven heats in Torun but victory at Vojens turbocharged his title challenge as he put both hands on the trophy at the FIM Italian Speedway GP in Terenzano just two weeks later Gollob’s FIM Nordic Speedway GP win wasn’t his only big win at Vojens that year He also lifted the FIM Speedway World Cup with Poland – one of five FIM SWC wins with his country Relive Gollob’s 2010 Vojens final win HERE. Head to Vojens to witness more iconic moments on Saturday, September 16, with the FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship-deciding FIM SGP2 of Denmark – Vojens also taking place on Friday, September 15. Tickets are on sale HERE now. Danish racer Leon Madsen bids to set up an epic finish to the FIM Speedway Grand Prix world title race as the sport’s top stars line up in the FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens Round eight of the Speedway GP series comes to the legendary Vojens Speedway Center as the fight for the sport’s biggest prizes reaches its climax with three SGP rounds set for the next four weekends The championship battle picks up pace in Denmark this weekend with Poland’s Bartosz Zmarzlik leading the charge on 108 points – 16 clear of Madsen before taking second spot in the Danish event here last year He will be determined to deliver a big performance on a track where Madsen is fighting for his first-ever final appearance Denmark’s former European champion finished second at the Betard FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Wroclaw on August 27 to narrow Zmarzlik’s lead from 22 points to 16 But he will need another big performance to pile the pressure on the Pole ahead of the final two rounds at Swedish track Malilla on September 17 and Polish venue Torun on October 1 Madsen could also come under pressure from in-form Great Britain racer Dan Bewley who has surged from 11th place to third in the standings after back-to-back victories in Cardiff (August 13) and Wroclaw Bewley has 84 points – 40 of them won in the last two rounds – putting him just eight behind Madsen in the battle for silver and 24 the warm-up for his Polish club Lublin’s PGE Ekstraliga semi-final Michelsen’s machine picked up drive unexpectedly with the bike landing hard on his left ankle but will hope a few days of intense
