A wonderful 2024 draws to a close with a 6-2 win away to Costa Adeje Tenerife
The home side managed to come back from two goals down
but the Catalans were too much for them in the end and will be playing in the quarter finals of the Copa de la Reina
The European champions struggled to get started
but once they did – Paredes making it 1-0 on 21 minutes with Pajor adding a second from a corner just three minutes later – it looked like Barça were set for an easy afternoon
They had nothing to lose and went on the attack and late in the first half both Monday and Aleksandra found the net
the teams were back to all-square as the second half got under way
Barça moved things up a gear and as more goals flew in
this time there was nothing Tenerife could do to counter them
Two penalties re-established the two-goal cushion
the first converted by Alexia and the second by Pajor
And they were also the scorers of the last two goals of the day
Alexia in the 88th minutes and Pajor in injury time

Barça heads home with another victory after beating Costa Adeje Tenerife 2-0 with goals from Alexia and Patri and a double assist from Schertenleib to strengthen their lead at the top of the table on a weekend when Real Madrid dropped two points
With the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Wolfsburg coming up in just four days
This opened the door for youngsters from the reserves like Schertenleib—already a regular in recent weeks—and Alba Caño
who made her second league start this evening
Alexia Putellas converted a pass from Schertenleib—her first assist with the first team—into a beautiful goal with a delicate touch into the top corner
Barça were unable to continue creating clear-cut chances against a well-organised home defence
more players were rested from the interval
and Gemma coming on as Romeu did his best to limit the minutes of the most heavily-used players
but after a top save by Tenerife goalkeeper Noelia against Aitana
and the woodwork preventing Rolfö from converting a clear chance
it was all getting rather worrying towards the end
and fired home a corker to make sure of three points ahead of vital matches against Wolfsburg and Real Madrid in the week ahead
Costa Adeje Tenerife: Noela Ramos; Estella (Natalia Ramos 86')
Babajidw (Silano 86') and Mari Jose (Clau Blanco 39')
is the San Sebastian festival and Adeje Town Hall is finalising preparations for what is one of Tenerife's most significant cultural and festive events
which spans over five centuries of tradition
is eagerly awaited by locals and visitors alike
The event will take place from midday with mass in the San Sebastián Church (near Costa Adeje Palace Hotel)
followed by a grand procession to La Enramada beach for the traditional blessing of the animals in the sea
accompanied by music from Boleros de Armeñime
will be broadcast live on Radio Sur Adeje 107.9 FM from midday
the iconic procession to the sea will take place to Playa La Enramada Beach
featuring an equestrian parade and the Nuestra Señora de las Nieves Group
will culminate with their blessing in the sea
The festival is known for its strong connection to the animal world
were required to pre-register at the Adeje Cultural Centre
including the animal’s vaccination records and civil liability insurance
over 70 animals have been confirmed as participants
Veterinary staff will be present to ensure the well-being of the animals
and designated shaded areas and fresh water will be available to keep the animals comfortable while they await their turn in the procession
the Adeje Town Hall has implemented a comprehensive safety plan
and rescue services will be present to ensure the smooth running of the celebrations
a dedicated team of municipal staff will be on hand to oversee developments throughout the festival
The San Sebastián festival dates back to the early 16th century
originating as a celebration by farmers and shepherds who honoured their patron saint
it has evolved into a cherished tradition that brings the community together
crafted in 1916 by the Bririllo workshop in Valencia
The statue’s intricate carving and dynamic pose evoke the artistic style of Bernini
with a blend of pain and ecstasy reminiscent of the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa
San Sebastián’s veneration has deep ties to Adeje's history
The saint considered a protector against epidemics and a guardian of animals vital to the agricultural economy
became central to local religious and cultural practices
The festival transitioned to its current format in the late 1970s
Adeje Town Hall has taken responsibility for organising the event
continuing to honour the deep-rooted traditions
Thousands of pilgrims now gather annually to participate in the festival
many bringing their animals for the traditional blessing
display their skills by leading their mounts into the sea as part of the procession
which the public are invited to come and watch
For those interested in the history of San Sebastián
additional details are available on the Adeje Town Hall website or in the book San Sebastián
A 47-year-old man has died after being rescued from the sea on Monday afternoon at Puertito Beach in Costa Adeje
when the man suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest while in the water
Lifeguards at the beach were the first to respond administering CPR on site until paramedics from the Canary Emergency Service (SUC) arrived
Despite continued efforts to revive the man using advanced resuscitation techniques
The Local Police and Guardia Civil were also present and took charge of the necessary legal procedures
including guarding the body until judicial authorities gave permission for it to be taken for autopsy
This incident comes amid a concerning trend
with Tenerife recording the highest number of sea-related fatalities in the Canary Islands
Authorities continue to stress the importance of caution when engaging in water activities along the island’s coastlines
A growing public campaign is calling for the suspension of the works for the Cuna del Alma luxury tourism project in Puertito de Adeje
with over 50,000 people signing a petition urging the authorities to deny its construction permits
Critics argue that the proposed 420-villa complex
poses a severe threat to protected species and habitats in the area
as well as violating European environmental regulations
highlights the project's impact on the surrounding natural areas
including the Special Conservation Zone (ZEC) Franja Marina Teno-Rasca
Environmental activists assert that the development contravenes Article 6.3 of the EU Habitats Directive (92/43/CEE)
which prohibits projects that could significantly affect protected ecological sites
Activists argue that the Belgian-funded development
located in a ravine with valuable geological and plant formations
will further encroach upon one of Tenerife’s last remaining natural spaces
They warn that the ongoing urban expansion is choking protected areas such as the Site of Scientific Interest of La Caleta and the Franja Marina Teno-Rasca ZEC
both of which are already under immense pressure from tourism
campaigners stressed that the project would destroy the essence of the location
which is cherished by both locals and visitors for its natural beauty
it will be its grave," the petition states
arguing that Tenerife already has a well-developed hospitality infrastructure and should diversify its economy rather than overdevelop its remaining green spaces
Opposition to Cuna del Alma has intensified due to legal and environmental violations
Activists point out that the project has already destroyed an archaeological site and commenced construction without a proper environmental impact assessment
These irregularities led the Canarian Government to suspend the project during the previous legislative term
led by Coalition Canaria and the Partido Popular (PP)
sanctions against the project have expired
a second petition has been launched on YouMoveEurope
calling for the resignation of key political figures
including the President of the Canary Islands
and Adeje’s Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga
accuses them of enabling what it describes as “the biggest urban scandal in recent Canarian history.”
Activist Resistance and Alleged Violations
Protests against the development have intensified
with activists resorting to direct action to block construction
an activist chained himself to an excavator to halt the works
the Salvar La Tejita environmental platform has reported violations of municipal building regulations
alleging that work is being carried out outside the permitted hours
activists filed complaints with the Canarian Environmental Protection Agency (ACPMN) and SEPRONA
citing illegal excavation and land-moving activities taking place as early as 7:00am on a Saturday
despite local ordinances explicitly prohibiting such works on weekends and public holidays
the future of Cuna del Alma remains uncertain
Activists and local communities are urging authorities to prioritise sustainable development over mass tourism
while campaigners continue to push for legal and political accountability
Whether the petitions and protests will succeed in stopping the project remains to be seen
but the controversy has already sparked a wider debate about the future of tourism and environmental conservation in the Canary Islands

has been named Spain’s most competitive tourist destination
according to the new SolyTUR study published by Exceltur
which examines more than 100,000 data points from destinations across the country
was presented at the national forum organised by the Association for Tourism Excellence
which brings together the most significant economic players in the sector and is chaired by Gabriel Escarrer
The event was attended by the mayor of Adeje
and business leaders from across the country
as well as the Minister of Tourism for Spain
Among the 20 most important destinations analysed in this 2024 monitor
presented by Exceltur’s vice-president
Adeje leads the ranking due to its commitment to high-level business tourism initiatives and improvements to public spaces
The ranking also highlights the municipality’s strong environmental protections and its ability to harness tourism for social and economic benefits
Adeje is followed by Calvià (Mallorca)
The study provides an in-depth analysis of the competitive positioning of Spain’s 20 most significant coastal and island municipalities
using 63 key indicators to assess their future competitiveness
Adeje tops the responsible tourism competitiveness ranking of SolyTUR 2024
Adeje stands out for tourism’s strong contribution to the social sphere
the positive attitude of local residents towards tourism
with more than 80% of the municipality’s land protected
Rodríguez Fraga noted that the municipality's unemployment number recently dropped below 2,000 with the current figure at 1,982
we remain concerned and continue to work for those individuals
which is very difficult to eliminate entirely,” he explained
are registered with Adeje’s employment database
creating daily job opportunities for people across the island
“We have maintained our commitment to excellence over the years
This study reaffirms that,” the mayor stated
and maintaining rigorous standards among all stakeholders in our tourism value chain have been key to our success
These findings should reinforce what matters most to us: ensuring tourism continues to generate wealth and opportunities for the people of Adeje
which is our primary goal,” he added
he expressed gratitude to Adeje’s residents
these positive results would not be possible.”
Adeje leads in the protection and enhancement of its coastline as a primary tourism resource
with the report assessing environmental management
The municipality also ranks first in accommodation excellence
based on its commitment to regulated offerings
Economic and social performance indicators also place Adeje at the top of the ranking
and employment generated by tourism activity
This economic and social success underpins Adeje’s overall strategy
“I will never tire of saying that if tourism does not create wealth for our people
That doesn’t mean there’s no room for improvement
and wages in certain sectors need to be enhanced
These are some of our key challenges moving forward,” Fraga stated
Adeje also ranks highly in the diversification of tourism products and the promotion of unique leisure experiences
The report particularly highlights governance and strategic management
assessing the political priority given to tourism
The Adeje Town Hall's Department of Culture
has opened the pre-registration period for anyone interested in taking part in this year’s 'La Pasión de Adeje'
the Good Friday street theatre performance
brings together hundreds of participants and thousands of spectators every year
It is one of the municipality’s most significant cultural events and has established itself as a reference for Holy Week (Easter) in the Canary Islands and beyond

Registration is open until Friday 11th April 2025 and we encourage you to think about taking part in this incredible production
which year after year has captured the attention of residents
The Adeje Town Hall has announced a comprehensive plan to dismantle the numerous rock piles that have proliferated along its coastline
have become a common sight in many municipalities across the south of Tenerife
One of the most affected areas is the Callaos del Agua reserve near El Veril beach
where around 200 rock piles are scattered along the coast
these man-made formations disrupt the natural balance of the coastal ecosystem
posing significant risks to biodiversity and the visual landscape
Constantly moving rocks destabilises the terrain
Disruption of habitats and exposure of plant roots further endanger the fragile coastal ecosystem
The dismantling process will be carried out monthly by the Adeje Municipal Services Company (EMSA)
the council will launch awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public about the environmental harm caused by this practice
the policy aligns with existing environmental legislation
including Law 4/2010 on the Canary Islands Catalogue of Protected Species and Law 42/2007 on Natural Heritage and Biodiversity
The forthcoming Canary Islands Biodiversity Law
the rock piles present safety hazards for tourists and residents
the council aims not only to restore the coastline's natural beauty but also to ensure safer conditions for visitors
This initiative reflects Adeje’s commitment to preserving its unique coastal environment
Through regular maintenance and public engagement
the town hopes to safeguard its natural heritage for future generations while addressing the ecological and safety challenges posed by these artificial structures
The Adeje council are poised to approve a major tourist development project tomorrow
and 140 luxury villas in the south of Tenerife
despite the region being in the midst of a serious water crisis
with the golf course alone covering 445,000 square metres
The move has sparked fierce criticism from environmental groups and local opposition parties
which has labelled the initiative a “speculative attack” on public resources
The proposed golf course is expected to consume water equivalent to the daily use of 16,400 people
a figure that opponents find alarming given the current emergency
A municipal report from last year revealed that Adeje already suffers a daily shortfall of nearly 2.9 million litres of water
“While Mayor Fraga asks residents to conserve water
he greenlights a mega-resort that will consume as much water each day as a third of the town’s population,” Podemos Adeje stated in a press release
The party accuses the Socialist mayor of serving the interests of tourism and ignoring the needs and voices of local families
The project is also under scrutiny for what critics describe as serious planning flaws
claims the development exceeds the accommodation density permitted under Tenerife’s island-wide planning regulations
He also points to insufficient protection of local heritage sites
including recently discovered Guanche petroglyphs on the site
and inadequate infrastructure for transport
“This is yet another urban development scheme that potentially violates Tenerife’s primary planning framework
the Island Spatial Plan,” said González
but the local government chose to ignore us.”
The environmental organisation Ben Magec–Ecologistas en Acción has echoed these concerns
highlighting that Tenerife already has nine golf courses
each consuming on average of 2.1 million litres of water per day
vastly more than the 128 litres typically used per person
The group described the project as “an unsustainable waste that appropriates a scarce and essential public resource for purely commercial gain.”
This latest development follows controversy over another large-scale project in Adeje
which was also promoted by Mayor Fraga and has drawn widespread condemnation for its environmental impact
opponents of the Hoya Grande plan are calling for urgent public mobilisation to halt what they see as a flagrant misuse of resources and a further step toward the overdevelopment of the island
is displaying the flag for jellyfish warning due to the presence of Portuguese Man O War jellyfish
The purple and white flag advises people to stay out of the water because although not deadly to humans
Although many people marvel at their bright colours and describe them as "beauty in motion”
the stings from their trailing tentacles are not remembered with such affection
it is recommended to wash the affected area with saline solution or
and to remove any remains of tentacles left on the skin whilst wearing gloves or using tweezers
It is also advisable to apply something cold to it
for 5-15 minutes whilst avoiding direct contact with the skin with your hands
The Portuguese Man O’ War (Physalia physalis) is most recognisable by its translucent
which floats on the ocean’s surface and can be tinged blue
sometimes reaching up to 165 feet (50 metres) in length
delivering painful and potentially dangerous stings to prey and unsuspecting swimmers
the Portuguese Man O’ War is a formidable predator
using its tentacles to paralyse small fish and other marine creatures
it travels with ocean currents rather than actively swimming
allergic reactions requiring medical attention
A man has been left hospitalised with ‘moderate’ injuries after crashing into a ravine while paragliding in the municipality of Adeje
The incident took place at around 8.00pm on Saturday evening
according to the Emergency Coordination Centre (CECOES)
112 Canarias received a distress call reporting the accident and immediately mobilised rescue teams
Due to the remote and rugged terrain where the paraglider came down
firefighters were deployed to carry out the rescue
Emergency crews faced significant challenges in reaching the injured man
who had landed in a difficult-to-access area that prevented immediate medical access
Once firefighters were able to secure and extract him from the ravine
he was transferred to a waiting ambulance where paramedics treated him for a series of traumatic injuries before transferring him to Hospiten Sur hospital for further care
Local Police were also present and have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall
No other individuals were involved in the incident
Authorities have not released the man's identity
and there is no update yet on his condition
The police in Tenerife are investigating the discovery of the body of a dead man in a cave in the south of the island
It was found on Tuesday afternoon in the municipality of Adeje
and efforts are now underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the death

The Adeje Council have started the process to regulate holiday rentals in the municipality in the south of Tenerife
to address the growing housing crisis that has intensified in the last couple of years
This decision follows a unanimous vote based on a proposal by Gabriel González
under the title Regulation of Vacation Rental Properties in Adeje
González highlighted the sharp contrast between the region's thriving tourism sector and the challenges faced by local residents
"The Canary Islands have seen unprecedented growth in tourism
the islands welcomed over 16 million visitors
achieving record-breaking revenues in hospitality
this prosperity contrasts sharply with low incomes
and social exclusion affecting many residents," he explained
According to data from the Tenerife Cabildo
Adeje currently has approximately 4,800 licenced holiday rental properties
González pointed out that this trend has displaced an estimated 10,000 local residents due to the pressure on the housing market
The proposal includes exploring the creation of a municipal ordinance to regulate holiday lets
drawing inspiration from Granadilla de Abona
Granadilla recently implemented measures to protect local families' access to housing
including limiting holiday rental activities to specific property types
The proposed regulations for Adeje prioritise preserving social housing and properties deemed outside traditional planning rules
ensuring they remain available for residential use rather than tourism
José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga (PSOE)
emphasized the need for a balanced approach
but we need time to establish appropriate regulations,” he said
only 211 of the 4,746 holiday rental properties advertised online were officially registered
While current registrations now surpass the number of active rentals
Méndez highlighted the ongoing lack of regulation due to the new Housing Law
which leaves landlords vulnerable to squatters when transitioning properties to long-term rentals
Addressing Population Growth and Housing Needs
Adeje experienced a population increase of 11,000 residents
leading to the construction of 1,000 social housing units
the municipality has recently allocated two plots of land for the development of new social housing with affordable rents
This dual strategy—regulating holiday rentals and increasing affordable housing—is intended to address the pressing issue of housing availability in Adeje while maintaining the economic benefits brought by tourism
The Canary Islands' General Police Corps has filed twelve charges against people for unauthorised camping on a beach within the protected area of La Caleta de Adeje

These measures are vital for the conservation of protected natural areas
ensuring that environmental laws are respected and that the integrity of these ecosystems is maintained
The Canary Police emphasized the significance of such operations in their official press release
and the importance of the role of coordinated efforts in effective environmental management
The Administrative Surveillance and Inspection Unit is tasked with the preventive policing
and reporting of administrative infractions across various sectors
These responsibilities are outlined in the Resolution of January 16
issued by the General Directorate of Security

A confrontation between two squatters in Costa Adeje
has left one man seriously injured after being pushed from a height of four metres
The incident occurred on Sunday at an abandoned and unfinished building near La Caleta
directly across from the local Orthodox church
the altercation took place in the upper area of El Veril
a known squatter site that has been occupied for several years by people of various nationalities
The National Police have arrested the suspected aggressor
the suspect reportedly pushed the other man
National Police from the Las Americas station have launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and to determine whether further charges may apply
The emergency services were quick to arrive at the scene to provide medical assistance
The injured man suffered a back injury and a head injury
where he remains under medical supervision
The derelict site where the incident took place has long been a point of concern for local residents
who have noted the increasing number of squatters in the area
The visibility of the encampments from public roads has raised questions about safety and oversight in these neglected urban spaces
has been reborn following an extensive renovation project that prioritised accessibility and being environmentally friendly
the viewpoint now offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic while seamlessly blending into the natural contours of the south Tenerife landscape
The Adeje Town Hall spearheaded the project to revitalise the previously neglected site
According to Epifanio Díaz Hernández
the aim was to enhance the natural beauty of the area and provide an improved experience for both residents and visitors
“This initiative highlights the unique charm of the environment while making it accessible to everyone,” he said
emphasising that the redesigned space is intended for the enjoyment of the entire Adeje community
restoring an area of historical and scenic significance
The renovation prioritised harmony with the surrounding environment
using materials and designs that respect the natural topography

ensuring accessibility while preserving the area’s natural aesthetic
includes two rest areas before reaching the main viewpoint on top of the hill
The first stop offers stunning views of Playa La Enramada Beach
The journey culminates at an elevated platform
where the boundaries visually merge with the horizon
The redesign considered sustainability and practicality
A carefully positioned handrail enhances safety while doubling as a shading device for seating at the lower levels
The materials used—such as exposed concrete and pavement featuring aggregates matching the surrounding landscape—ensure visual cohesion
Ground-level lights provide subtle illumination
and protective railings enhance the overall safety without detracting from the natural scenery
The Mirador de La Paloma now stands as a symbol of the balance between functionality and preservation
By making the site accessible to all and highlighting its historical and environmental value
Adeje has transformed the viewpoint into a landmark that celebrates the region’s natural beauty
In an emergency response to the immigration crisis in the Canary Islands
the Spanish Government has approved a €7.4 million investment for the construction of two temporary foreign care centres (CATE)
The CATE facility planned for Adeje will be a modular structure built on land owned by the Ministry of the Interior
This project comes amid their ongoing investigations
which are examining the shift in Mediterranean migration routes toward the Canary Islands
existing migrant reception facilities across the Canary Islands — including those in Lanzarote
and Gran Canaria — will also undergo improvements
ensuring that services and supplies can meet the needs of all new arrivals
The government emphasised that traditional mechanisms under Spanish Law 9/2017 were insufficient for addressing the immediate needs posed by this situation
leading to an emergency procurement decision by the Secretary of State for Security on September 18th
in line with Article 120 of the legislation
enables expedited contracting for the necessary works
the Spanish Government plans to seek support from the European Union to accommodate minor migrants across the country
highlighting the scale and urgency of managing these migration flows in a coordinated European effort
Adeje Town Hall has submitted an official request for €15 million in funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to finance a comprehensive Urban Cohesion Plan aimed at transforming key areas of the town centre
and quality of life in areas such as Las Torres
The project aligns with the Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI) and the 2030 Agenda
with its implementation dependent on approval from the Ministry of Finance
Transforming Adeje’s Urban Landscape
Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga emphasised the strategic importance of the initiative
"This plan aims to strengthen the town’s internal cohesion through key interventions in infrastructure
It also includes cultural and community initiatives to improve living conditions in these neighbourhoods
We believe the project meets all the requirements for the funding call
and we are confident that we will be able to access European funding for its development."
He further explained that while these projects are part of Adeje’s long-term urban development strategy
their execution speed will depend on securing external funding
With many municipalities across Europe applying for ERDF support
Adeje is optimistic that the advanced stage and feasibility of its proposals will help secure the necessary funds
Key Initiatives Under the Urban Cohesion Plan
The proposal encompasses several areas of improvement:
Adeje Town Hall remains committed to enhancing the quality of life for its residents and modernising the town’s infrastructure
the Urban Cohesion Plan is set to reshape Adeje’s urban landscape

In response to the growing challenges posed by the widespread use of electric scooters in the south of Tenerife
the Adeje Council are about to introduce new regulations to control their use
Adeje will become the second council on the island
to implement a specific ordinance aimed at managing the increasing presence of these personal mobility vehicles in their municipality
Key measures outlined in the forthcoming ordinance include mandatory use of helmets for riders and increased fees for removing and retrieving scooters from local compounds
These steps are part of the town hall’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS)
designed to address the chaos caused by the unregulated use and parking of electric scooters
Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Security and Mobility in Adeje
is leading the effort to formalise the new regulations
She expects the ordinance to be approved by the end of the year
noting that "we have spent months working meticulously on this document to avoid future legal challenges." Vargas emphasised the need for the regulation to be "strict and firm" to ensure its effectiveness
The misuse of electric scooters has become a significant issue for residents
particularly due to improper parking on pavements and public spaces
more than 4,000 scooters were removed in Adeje
Vargas also pointed out that across the Canary Islands
nearly 15,000 scooters have been impounded over the past three years
with complaints from citizens steadily rising
the new ordinance will impose stricter controls on the companies that operate electric scooters in the area
but the town has faced recurring issues with management and enforcement
Vargas announced that higher fees will be introduced for abandoned scooters left on public roads and impounded by local authorities
a move intended to encourage operators to ensure more responsible use
The municipality is also promoting educational campaigns in local schools to raise awareness among young people about the importance of adhering to the new safety regulations
While Adeje is taking the lead in the southern part of Tenerife with these regulations
neighbouring municipalities like Arona are also drafting similar rules
Vargas acknowledged the difficulty of coordinating regulations between adjacent areas
particularly as there are no clear geographical boundaries separating some regions
the proximity between Adeje and Arona in Playa Las Americas complicates enforcement
as companies contracted in one area may not be subject to penalties in the other
The new PMUS in Adeje aims not only to regulate scooter use but also to promote a safer
Vargas stressed the need for cooperation between all parties involved
adding that "it is the responsibility of local administrations to enforce rules that encourage peaceful coexistence."
Adeje hopes to restore order to public spaces
The Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has delivered a guilty verdict against a man accused of murdering his ex-wife in Adeje on 8th January 2023
The jury determined that the crime was premeditated
They have requested that the sentencing judge take into account the aggravating factors of gender-based violence and familial ties when determining the punishment
The jury dismissed the defence's argument that the accused was not aware of his actions due to being under the influence of drugs
Evidence from neighbours in Armeñime
and expert witnesses indicated that the accused appeared conscious and not intoxicated at the time of the crime
The 46-year-old defendant was also found guilty of causing injuries to his stepson
who sustained cuts to both hands while attempting to intervene and protect his mother during the attack
the accused claimed he had no recollection of the events that night
from the time he left work until he arrived at the police station
these claims were refuted by multiple witnesses who testified that he appeared sober and aware
The court also heard harrowing testimony about the couple's ten-year marriage
and cycles of separation and reconciliation
The final separation occurred on 28 December 2022
following a domestic violence complaint from the victim
after which the accused spent several days in custody
The defence admitted the defendant’s culpability and proposed a sentence of 16.5 years for the murder
along with the minimum penalty for the injuries inflicted on the stepson
called for a 25-year prison term for the murder
an additional five years for the second charge
and compensation ranging from €200,000 to €250,000 for each of the couple’s four children
along with €25,000 for the injured stepson
The victim’s children recounted years of humiliation and abuse endured by their mother and themselves
culminating in the tragic events of that night
Witnesses described how the accused attacked the victim outside her home while her children were present
Neighbours testified to hearing her cries for help and seeing a man restrain the accused
A plainclothes police officer who lived nearby alerted authorities and medical responders
while bystanders attempted to save the woman’s life
the accused frequently expressed his intent to kill his ex-wife and voiced grievances about Spanish laws offering too much protection to women
Forensic experts confirmed that the victim’s death occurred almost instantaneously from a single knife wound
A psychologist refuted the accused's claim of amnesia and stated that he was fully aware of his actions despite his reported use of substances
The court is now tasked with determining the final sentence
which is expected to reflect the severity of the crime and the aggravating circumstances highlighted by the jury
The Tenerife Cabildo is investing more than €6.5 million in the improvement and refurbishment of the seafront between Plaza de Unterhaching and Puerto Colón (Phase 1) in Adeje
and in the renovation of the promenade at Playa de Las Vistas in Arona
as announced yesterday (Monday) by Cabildo Vice President and Tourism Councillor
The Councillor for Commerce and Business Support
joined the Vice President on his visit to the area; to assess the significant boost these improvements will provide to commercial activity in both municipalities
“We are leading the regeneration of Tenerife’s tourist spaces in collaboration with the town halls
We are starting the year by presenting the main projects from the Insular Strategy and Tourism Regeneration Programme (PIER) 2024-2027 in both Adeje and Arona
These are areas in need of renewal and modernisation
using sustainability criteria that promote pedestrian mobility
Our aim is for these public tourist spaces to be as competitive as possible
which will also attract private investment in the surrounding areas
is a tool to attract higher spending at the destination and increase the profitability of tourism activities.”
Afonso highlighted that “the projects are designed to be comprehensive
addressing key areas within the urban layout of the municipalities
PIER is a key document for renewing the image and offerings of these municipalities on the island
We are committed to driving the regeneration of Tenerife’s tourist spaces.”
“collaboration between administrations is essential to ensure that services and infrastructure meet the expectations of the public
We thank the Cabildo and Lope Afonso for recognising our municipality’s needs
and we hope to see these plans come to fruition through agreements like those we have already achieved in tourism and infrastructure
which fall under the Vice President’s remit.”
“Our goal is to continue improving the municipality
while also addressing the demands of visitors and the main sector underpinning our economy
We have visited key projects such as the improvement of the seafront between Plaza de Unterhaching and Puerto Colón
which is part of the Insular Strategy and Tourism Regeneration Programme (PIER)
and we have also discussed future matters of great interest to all.”
“this project for the promenade at Playa de Las Vistas will mark a ‘before and after’ for the destination and for Arona
not only in terms of quality but also in the broader strategy to renovate the surrounding area
benefitting both visitors and residents.”
“It will revitalise the south of the island and Tenerife as a whole
We will continue with improvements in Los Cristianos
the tourism hub of the municipality and we will enhance the area
promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly development
It is a major step forward for the Las Vistas area.”
Afonso explained that the renovation of the promenade at Playa de Las Vistas aims to upgrade the most iconic seafront in the tourist hub of Los Cristianos (Arona) by reorganising and widening the promenade
creating a more direct connection with the beach
The project includes a complete overhaul of the paving
alongside improvements to all installations
The cost of this work is 3.8 million euros
improvements and refurbishments are being carried out on the seafront between Plaza de Unterhaching and Puerto Colón (Phase 1)
this involves renovating the promenade along Adeje’s coastline
an area with significant tourist activity and numerous hotels and leisure infrastructures
The aim is to address the promenade’s fragmentation by providing continuity and ensuring clear pedestrian routes and access to the sea
The project also includes creating new leisure areas with shade and vegetation
using appropriate materials and modern furniture
The cost of this project is 3.3 million euros
The Tenerife Cabildo’s governing body approved the Insular Strategy and Tourism Regeneration Programme (PIER) 2024-2027 on 18 December 2024
with an initial investment of €18 million
This programme includes eight significant projects
Afonso added that the plan encompasses five municipalities: “Arona
which collectively account for 120,970 accommodation places
and the highest density of tourism activity
leading to greater wear and tear on these areas
The Cabildo is committed to enhancing the quality of these spaces
maintaining their appeal as tourist destinations
and improving the current state of some of their surroundings.”
The Adeje Council is moving forward with plans to bolster its tourism offerings by signing off on another large-scale project
despite ongoing controversy with Cuna del Alma in El Puertito
The Council is set to forward documentation for the Hoya Grande Partial Plan to the regional government
which includes the development of a 445,000 square metre golf course
and 140 villas on a plot exceeding one million square metres
located in Hoya Grande by Los Menores in the south of Tenerife
is driven by increasing tourist demand and aims to offer high-end accommodation
After a minor modification process that began in 2016
with the strategic environmental evaluation pending review by the regional Ministry of the Environment
The Hoya Grande project includes 1,680 hotel beds for holidaymakers
The course will consume 5 litres of water per square metre a day
meaning total usage of 2.1 million litres daily
the average person uses 128 litres of water per day according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE)
the golf course's daily water usage will be equivalent to that of 16,406 people
more than a third of Adeje's population of 50,167 residents
This luxury tourism project is advancing as Tenerife faces a water emergency declared in March
The island is experiencing extreme drought conditions
with negative values on the Standardised Precipitation-Evaporation Index (SPEI)
The island’s water reservoirs have halved in capacity over the past four years
with near-empty reservoirs at the start of the 2022 and 2023 summer seasons
Some municipalities in Tenerife have already restricted water supply
A municipal report predicts water demand this summer could reach 35 million litres per day
The report warns of a daily water deficit of 2.87 million litres
decreased water flow due to lack of rainfall
and an urgent need for intervention to prevent shortages
The necessary works to address the water crisis are estimated to cost 4.3 million euros
will directly impact 31 sweet tabaiba plants
The site also includes a habitat of interest with thermos-mediterranean and stepped scrub in the northeast
The strategic environmental evaluation inventory lists the presence of the protected viborina triste plant
which previously halted the Cuna del Alma project
The Council plans to relocate this species to avoid direct impact
ensuring protective measures like perimeter fencing and specialist supervision
The only vulnerable animal species identified is the Eurasian stone-curlew
The project will also severely impact archaeological heritage
with 29 ethnographic and archaeological elements found in Hoya Grande
The Council intends to take measures to avoid damage but acknowledges that significant sites like the Hoya Grande VIII cabin complex and the Hoya Grande IX rock engravings are within the future golf course area
necessitating excavation with authorisation from the Canary Islands' Directorate General of Heritage.
