IV and V) in the municipality of Agüimes (Gran Canaria) with an investment of €20 million
• Naturgy already has 21 projects in operation in the archipelago
with the capacity to produce up to 380 GWh of clean energy per year
equivalent to the consumption of 116,000 homes
and avoid the emission of more than 190,000 tonnes of CO2per year
• The Canary Islands Minister for Ecological Transition and Energy
Mariano Hernández Zapata; the President of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria
Antonio Morales Méndez; and the Mayor of Agüimes
today took part in the inauguration ceremony of the plants and highlighted the importance of these facilities for the decarbonisation of the Canary Islands’ electricity system
Naturgy leads the promotion of the energy transition in the Canary Islands with the inauguration of five new photovoltaic plants in the municipality of Agüimes (Gran Canaria)
The entry into operation of these facilities brings the Group’s renewable energy capacity in the region to 136 MW
which represents an annual production capacity of around 380 GWh
Naturgy already operates a total of 21 facilities in the archipelago
which contribute to reducing CO2 emissions by more than 190,000 tonnes per year
The combined capacity of the renewable facilities operated by Naturgy alone accounts for around 15% of the total renewable MW currently in operation in the Canary Islands
The five new photovoltaic plants (Gran Canaria I and II and Telde I
have a total capacity of 19.5 MW and will produce 38 GWh annually
equivalent to the consumption of 11,650 homes
avoiding the annual production of 25,000 tonnes of CO2
These facilities have involved an investment of €20 million and have generated 140 direct and indirect jobs during the construction
the five systems have a total of more than 35,900 photovoltaic modules and a service life of 25 years
Naturgy has a portfolio under development in the whole of the Islands with an accumulated capacity of close to 70 MW
These projects include the future installation of a hybridisation system using batteries in the town of Agüimes
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Canary Islands Minister for Ecological Transition and Energy
the event was attended by Jesús San Emeterio
Director of Renewable Generation Spain; Juan Ferrero
Head of Renewables Development Spain; Elisa Ferrando
Head of Engineering and Construction of Naturgy Renovables and Sergio Auffray
Delegate of Renewable Development in the Canary Islands
the Canary Islands Minister for Ecological Transition and Energy
said that the installation of new renewable energy facilities in the Canary Islands is always “excellent news on our path towards decarbonisation”
given that the islands currently only have a 20% penetration of renewables
Zapata also pointed to the need to increase this figure as soon as possible
since “we have to meet the requirements set by the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC)
whose objective for the Canary Islands is to reach 58% renewables penetration by 2030”
A challenge that he described as “complicated” but for which “the Executive has not stopped working
he highlighted the work to promote the implementation of renewables in the Islands
with actions such as the recent amendment to the Climate Change Act
provide legal certainty and speed up its implementation
as the future of the Canary Islands depends on renewable energies”
bearing in mind the energy emergency situation in which we find ourselves”
Zapata was also keen to remind everyone of the recent announcement by MITECO
which is launching the tender for the renewal of the islands’ energy groups
by means of which “we will be able to move forward and renew the islands’ generation groups
where a greater incursion of renewable energies and special attention to the cleanest offers will be sought”
the President of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria
stressed that Naturgy’s new plants “contribute to consolidating the island’s position as the leading island territory in the introduction of renewable energies in the archipelago”,adding that these additions to the system “help us to move forward on our path towards an increasingly sustainable model based on our comprehensive Ecoisland project”
Morales also stressed that “companies know that in Gran Canaria they can count on a social and political ecosystem favourable to this kind of investment thanks to the Cabildo’s leadership and the consensus achieved to promote the energy transition”
reminding those present that the island corporation “has designed a strategy that will allow it to reach 60% penetration of clean energy by 2030
a context in which the Salto de Chira power plant will stand out as a great resource for storage and the introduction of renewables and water production for agriculture”
praised Naturgy’s efforts to increase its renewable energy capacity in the Canary Islands and its decision to locate these five new facilities in a municipality – Agüimes – and a region – the Southeast of Gran Canaria – that have been characterised for many years by their commitment to renewable energies
sustainability and care for the environment
Hernández stressed that the annual production of the five new photovoltaic plants installed in Agüimes is equivalent to 90% of the consumption of all households in the municipality
while Naturgy’s total production of energy from renewable sources in the Canary Islands is already equivalent to twice the annual domestic consumption of the entire Southeast region
very positive figures that give an idea of the growth that renewables are experiencing in the archipelago
“Naturgy’s commitment to the development of renewables in the Canary Islands is a consolidated reality
as evidenced by our numerous projects in operation and the portfolio under construction
the power in operation in the Canary Islands will reach 145 MW this year”
Naturgy has made a commitment to be one of the key players in the energy transition towards a circular and decarbonised economy model
The group allocated 90% of the investments made in 2023 to energy transition projects
with €1.730 billion spent on renewable power generation and more than €900 million on distribution networks
Naturgy currently has an operational installed renewable generation capacity of around 6.5 GW (3.3 GW of wind power generation
2.2 GW of hydropower generation and 1 GW of photovoltaic generation) and expects to have an installed capacity of around 8 GW in operation by the end of 2024
in addition to a number of projects totalling almost 20 GW in the pipeline
Naturgy aims to be the leading company in promoting renewable gases in Spain
both in the production and distribution of biomethane in the country in the short term
and in the development of hydrogen as an energy vector that will have a significant impact on the energy mix in the medium term
The company is well positioned to take advantage of the opportunity offered by renewable gases to move towards decarbonisation and is ready to deploy significant investments and resources in this business

Rovanperä and Toyota complete dominant Canarias victory Two-time world champion returns to form as he leads Toyota 1-2-3-4 on event's WRC debut
Words by Alasdair Lindsay
Kalle Rovanperä delivered a crushing victory on Rally Islas Canarias
scoring maximum points and outpacing eight-time world champion Sébastien Ogier by 53.5 seconds
The two-time World Rally champion wasted no time in taking control of the event
winning every stage until Saturday night’s superspecial in the Gran Canaria arena
He followed up by topping the Sunday classification by 8.3s and winning the powerstage by 4s
His victory marks a sharp turnaround from the start of the season
where he was off the pace in Monte Carlo and Sweden
then suffered retirement on Safari Rally Kenya
Victory in Gran Canaria is both his first win and podium since last September’s Rally Chile
“It has not been the best start of the season but we are definitely – in this kind of condition – back now,” the Toyota driver declared at the finish line
Ogier simply had no answer to the pace demonstrated by the “crazy little Finn”
as he dubbed him at the finish line of SS16
He scored two consolation stage wins – one a three-way tie with Adrien Fourmaux and Yohan Rossel’s Rally2-spec Citroën C3 Rally2 on the Gran Canaria kart track superspecial
then another on the second pass of Agüimes – Santa Lucia as Rovanperä saved his tires for the powerstage
“The only one which was very impressive this weekend is Kalle and Jonne,” said the eight-time world champion
Elfyn Evans completed the podium places; he briefly battled Ogier for second in the Sunday classification
remarking that the “feeling [with the car] was much better today”
But Evans was ultimately left frustrated at not being able to capitalize on the strong performance of the GR Yaris Rally1 demonstrated by his team-mates
Evans was not entirely happy despite a seventh consecutive podium
“When you aren’t in a position to fight for the win
Takamoto Katsuta ensured Toyota clinched a 1-2-3-4 finish
having inherited fourth place on Saturday afternoon when Sami Pajari ran wide and crashed on
destroying the front-right corner of his Yaris
The WRC2 champion did not restart on the final day
Fourmaux won the three-way fight among the Hyundai i20s
all finishing well adrift of the lead Toyota quartet
“Sometimes in really difficult rallies you can learn a lot and make a step for the future
All three Hyundai drivers had spent the rally running components that weren’t suited to the smooth asphalt of Gran Canaria and were sealed pre-event – leaving them unable to make the type of changes needed to close the gap to Toyota as the rally wore on
Fourmaux was top Hyundai on a weekend when the team were chasing shadows
Thierry Neuville was closing in rapidly on Fourmaux during the final morning but suffered a front-left puncture on the second pass of Agüimes – Santa Lucia
While Fourmaux had tried to remain upbeat at the finish line
Ott Tänak – finishing sixth overall – was more frank in his assessment of the weekend
“It’s difficult to find words,” said Tänak
We did not do our homework and we were not prepared
Neuville’s puncture was especially unfortunate as he’d been the only Hyundai to get in the mix with the Toyotas on the final day
running fourth in the Sunday classification prior to his front-left deflation
“Even if we are all trying we still did something wrong
so we need to find out what and put the finger where it’s painful and come back stronger,” was Neuville’s assessment at the finish line
“Nevertheless it was good to see the whole team kept fighting hard despite all the struggles.”
Grégoire Munster finished outside the points in 11th
having gone off the road on Saturday afternoon
His was the only Ford Puma to finish the rally; Josh McErlean ran wide and crashed on Sunday’s opening stage
Munster will be glad to see the back of the event
Echoing the Hyundai drivers’ complaints
Munster said: “We got something wrong in the beginning
which is sealed and we cannot do anything about it.”
Asked if he was looking forward to the upcoming switch to gravel rallies
Rossel wrapped up his second WRC2 win of the season
building on his Monte Carlo victory by fending off Spanish superchampion Alejandro Cachón by 29.5s
It was the first podium of Cachón’s WRC2 career
“Alejandro and his co-driver pushed me a lot,” said Rossel
“I don’t know the road and when I came here I didn’t know if I can compete for the win
Škoda driver Nikolay Gryazin completed the WRC2 podium

Barça Lassa have started their Copa del Rey campaign in the best possible fashion by recording an overwhelming 15-0 victory over Agüimes FS
The team from the Canary Islands were overrun in the first half of the encounter conceding nine goals before the break
Sergio Lozano and Ferrao all helped themselves to hat-tricks
Marc Carmona’s side were ahead 2-0 in the opening minutes
eager to take control as they knew that in a one off tie
Wilde broke the deadlock and Dyego added a second to allow the blaugranes to take control of the game
Between minute 13 and 20 Barça scored seven times to render obsolete any hope the home side had of springing an upset
Lozano and Gabriel all pitched in amongst others before Dyego was able to complete a first half hat-trick to make the score 9-0 to Barça at the break
In the second half Carmona’s side eased back a little with the contest already decided
More goal inevitably came with Lozano and Ferrao picking up their hat-tricks to add to Dyego first half trio of strikes
Barça thoughts can now turn to their next opponents in the Copa del Rey who will be Magna Gurpea at the Palau next week

The municipality of Agüimes has recently opened a new bathing site to the public in the old jetty located in Arinaga
This jetty was built at the end of the 19th century and is considered of great historical and ethnographic value
The Muelle Viejo is half hidden at the foot of the mountain where the current lighthouse stands
where divers plunge into the sea every day to explore the crystalline ocean
and large conch shells once used by the inhabitants of Gran Canaria
Thanks to recent improvement works, a new pedestrian ramp has been built to access the beach, and the old jetty has been renovated and reinforced. The site has been adapted for bathing thanks to the new wooden and marine aluminium platforms that have been installed, fully respecting the landscape and the original structure.
In addition, the paths connecting the old jetty to the lighthouse have been rehabilitated, and several information panels have been installed to explain the natural and historical values of the area to visitors.
This new feature provides us with the perfect place to recharge our batteries after a refreshing swim, while we imagine the history behind this relic of the past.

Inicio / Notas de prensa / The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, opens the eight wind farms constructed by Naturgy in Gran Canaria
The Naturgy Power Generation Development Manager, Carlos González, and the Renewables Development Manager in the Canary Islands, Sergio Auffray, also attended, as well as several figures from the institutional and business sector in Gran Canaria.
The eight wind farms that make up the Agüimes wind power complex have a total of 16 wind turbines, an installed power capacity of 41 MW and represent a 63 million euro investment. These wind farms are expected to generate 127 GWh of electricity per year, equivalent to the annual consumption of 50,000 homes.
The complex consists of the following installations: Balcón de Balos, Doramas, La Vaquería, Montaña Perros, Piletas 1, Triquivijate, Vientos del Roque and Haría, which began operating in April. This project represents a significant economic and social boost for the area as around 290 jobs were created during the construction phase.
In addition, these installations will be able to replace more conventional electricity generation sources, therefore reducing environmentally harmful and greenhouse-effect emissions by 95,000 tonnes per year and 1.9 million tonnes of CO throughout their life span.
“By developing these projects, Naturgy reinforces its commitment to the Canary Islands and demonstrates the company’s strong commitment to increasing renewable energy generation, as reflected in our 2018-2022 Strategic Plan”, said Ana Peris, Power Generation Manager at Naturgy.
The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, noted that the inauguration of the wind farms in the Agüimes wind power complex “is an important step for Gran Canaria, and the archipelago as a whole, towards the decarbonisation of our energy system, and gradually but sustainably reducing the percentage of fossil fuels in our energy mix”.
The regional President also identified the work carried out over the last three years by the Ministry of the Economy, Industry, Trade and Knowledge on this subject and the importance of the collaboration between the public and private sector to develop alternative energy projects.
The President of the Town Council of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, firmly believes that these wind farms are “an important step in introducing renewable energy to Gran Canaria”.
“We have been very slow to make use of what our natural conditions can provide us with. Now it is time to focus our efforts on extending the mix of renewable energy in Gran Canaria and be open to investments such as these new wind farms developed by Naturgy”, he added.
In addition to the wind farms in the Agüimes wind power complex, Naturgy has constructed an installation in Fuerteventura within the Canary Islands wind power quota, the Fuerteventura Renovables II wind farm, which will also start operating in the next few weeks.
The company currently has an additional portfolio of wind and photovoltaic projects being processed in the Canary Islands to submit in the coming wind and photovoltaic tenders announced by the Central Government for 2018 and 2019.
The renewables subsidiary of the multinational power company closed 2017 with an installed capacity in operation of 1,147 MW in Spain (979 MW from wind, 110 MW from mini-hydroelectric plants and 58 MW from cogeneration and photovoltaics).
The company plans to build a number of renewable energy projects in various autonomous regions over the coming months that will double its size by the end of 2019.

The Canary Islands Directorate General of Emergencies has extended the high-risk marine pollution alert to five municipalities of Gran Canaria after the fishing vessel Montes y Sabino sank 3.5 miles off the coast last night (Wednesday)
the alert has been in effect since 9:45am this morning (Thursday) for the municipalities of Telde
This decision has been made in response to the incident and in accordance with the Territorial Emergency Plan for Civil Protection of the Canary Islands (PLATECA)
Maritime Rescue have confirmed the presence of an oil slick measuring between 100 and 150 metres in width and extending for one mile south of the incident site
The boat was carrying an estimated 2,000 litres of diesel fuel and 50 litres of oil
The oil slick is currently located approximately four miles (7.4 kilometres) east of the Port of Arinaga
AEMET has forecast surface winds from the north-northwest throughout the day
with moderate speeds between 20 and 30 kilometres per hour
north-westerly swells between one and two metres in height are anticipated to persist throughout the day
the Spanish central government has activated the National Maritime Plan at Emergency Phase Situation 1
maintaining vigilance over the affected area
The Police have filed a complaint against the administrator of a hotel chain
that has complexes on the islands of Gran Canaria
accused of dumping large amounts of waste and construction materials on protected land in the municipalities of Agüimes and Las Palmas in Gran Canaria
An investigation began in March after Local Police officers reported that someone had dumped 14 old bathtubs in the middle of the San Lorenzo ravine in the capital of Gran Canaria
an area whose soil is protected because of its agricultural value
the agents found several old shower trays in boxes bearing the name of a well-known company that sells construction materials based in Las Palmas and in Telde
which would become the key piece of evidence in the investigation
Officers went to the store and asked them for information on any customers who had recently bought these shower trays
finding details of a purchase of 25 of them by the administrator of a well-known hotel chain
Suspecting that the dumped bathtubs could have come from the renovation works of a hotel
the Local Police requested the assistance of the General Corps of the Canary Islands Police to carry out an inspection in one of the hotel chains complexes in the municipality of Mogán
This search confirmed that renovation work was being carried out which included upgrading the bathrooms and replacing the bathtubs
and that their characteristics fully matched with those found in the San Lorenzo ravine
the hotel couldn’t prove to the police where the old bathtubs were being taken away to be disposed of
something which is a legal obligation when renovation work is being carried out
the investigation also uncovered that other materials were being replaced in the hotel rooms
including the curtains with a very recognisable pattern on them
that officers recalled seeing a large amount of them dumped in Vargas in the municipality of Agüimes
they returned to Vargas to carry out a thorough inspection of the rubbish dumped there
and found various materials such as sheets and curtains that even had labels with the hotel's name on them
in addition to another 14 bathtubs with similar characteristics to those found in the San Lorenzo ravine
the Canary Islands Police and the Local Police have filed a complaint against the hotel chain with fines of up to 100,000 euros for illegal dumping
in addition to the obligation to repair the environmental damage they have caused

A new survey has revealed that more than two million homes in Spain are located in areas at risk of flooding due to rising river levels
A further 330,000 homes are exposed to similar flood risks due to their coastal location
of the total of 25.8 million properties that make up Spain's housing stock
around 1 in every 10 (9 percent) are in areas at risk of flooding
ranging from a 'high probability' of floods in the next decade to 'exceptional exposure' within the next century
Following the recent deadly floods in Valencia
flooding is still front and centre for people in Spain and many will be wondering about their town
READ ALSO: How can I find out if my home is in a flood zone in Spain?
Which parts of Spain could see future floods
The research identified several areas of Spain at high risk of river flooding in the coming years
'River flood risk assesses the exposure of each municipality to flooding based on return periods ranging from 10 to 500 years
classifies the areas into five levels: those with a high probability of flooding in a 10-year return period; those that suffer frequent flooding within a 50-year return; areas with a medium or occasional probability in a 100-year period; those with a low or exceptional probability
associated with a 500-year return; and areas not identified as floodable or where there is no probability that the territory will suffer river flooding.'
different areas of Spain are ranked with an overall risk percentage produced for properties there
with 41 percent of its housing stock at risk
was found to be the area most exposed to flood risks
with 118,600 homes vulnerable out of a total of 292,774
This is due to the Pisuerga river passing right through the city
The most exposed municipalities there are San Miguel del Pino
where around a quarter (25 percent) of properties are at risk
equivalent to 229,294 homes out of 889,322 in the Andalusian area
There the risk factor is the famous Guadalquivir river and the most affected municipalities are La Algaba
where 22 percent of homes were found to be at risk
The most vulnerable municipalities in this province include Vila-Sacra
The report also revealed that 1.3 percent of all homes in Spain are located in areas with some level of exposure to coastal flooding
this figure is naturally lower than the overall river flood risk level because it only impacts towns and cities on the coast
The methodology used a similar system of analysing different threat levels over time
9 percent of properties in the northern area are considered to be flood-prone
most of them with a 'medium' or 'occasional' flood risk probability
Among the most exposed parts of the province are Santoña
was next with 6 percent of homes at medium or occasional risk
There the most vulnerable areas are: Haría
Other areas at risk of coastal flooding include Málaga

The Guardia Civil have arrested 7 people when they were caught red-handed unloading 51 bundles of hashish weighing 1,600 kilos
from an inflatable boat on the shore of the Vargas Beach in Agüimes in Gran Canaria
there was a vehicle that belonged to the gang at the beach prepared for the transport of the drugs
being looked after by one of the detainees who was acting as guardian of the place where the drugs were to be stored
The arrests came as a result of surveillance carried out by the Guardia Civil marine unit
who detected a possible drug landing in the area of Punta Langostero
for which one of the patrols from Agüimes was immediately dispatched to
they found they were at the exact place of arrival of the inflatable boat and could see them unloading the drugs onto the beach
but when the gang saw them they fled on foot meaning the patrol unit could only seize the boat
the support of other patrols in service in the area was requested by the Las Palmas Command Operations Centre (COS)
for an extensive search of the coastline looking for the other six gang members that had fled from the scene
The search operation lasted until dawn and the six other people involved in the incident were finally arrested after being discovered hiding between the Barranco de Guayadeque and the GC-1 highway
a search was carried out at a house in Agüimes where they found another inflatable boat
and other materials necessary to guarantee the return of the individuals in charge of transportation of the drug by sea to their place of origin
The detainees have been investigated for a Crime of belonging to a Criminal Organization and another for Drug Trafficking
and the investigation is ongoing to find other possible people involved
After being handed over to the Judicial Authorities

One by one the new wind turbines installed in the Arinaga wind farm were becoming vertical and just a few days ago the six wind structures were already pointing to the sky in the southeast
linking the different parts of a wind turbine that weighs more than 90 tons and is 67 metres high is a complex operation involving large tonnage cranes and highly qualified personnel who measure each movement to the millimetre
it was a challenge aggravated by the inconvenience of the strong winds that lash the area practically all year round
a company that supplies and installs wind turbines
The new wind structures were transported three months ago by sea from Portugal and at the end of March had already reached their destination in the port of Arinaga
from where they were transferred on a short road trip to the installations at the wind farm
In just seven days the work team had already assembled the first wind turbine
In the process of installing the different sections they used special cranes capable of moving up to 300 tons
The first section corresponds to lifting the shafts
two sections of 22 tons each made of steel that need to be perfectly adjusted to each other and crimped in turn to the 160 pieces on the bolt cage
it will be necessary to place the nacelles weighing 35 tons each and
the bushings and resin blades each weighing 15 tons
Each wind turbine weighs more than 90 tons with a height of 67 metres
This is when the project enters the interior wiring installation phase
as well as adjusting the configuration for the new wind turbines
Repowering work at the Arinaga wind farm is expected to be completed by July this year
The project will transform this renewable energy point
into the most modern in the Canary Islands and a national benchmark because it involves comprehensive repowering work that
"is sometimes more complex than building a new wind farm from scratch"
The new wind turbines are more modern and will increase production capacity and extend the operation of the installation for at least two more decades
The project consists of the replacement of six of the nine old wind turbines on the wind farm. They were MADE 660 kW AE46 technology turbines and will be replaced with ENERCON 900 kW E44 wind turbines which are much more modern and efficient and will require a total investment of €10 million. Already in 2012, Parque Eólica Carretera de Arinaga, a company consisting of Endesa, through Enel Green Power España, and the Agüimes Town Council
decided to undertake the first action to repower the wind farm This involved replacing wind turbines one
five and six with others of larger dimensions capable of increasing energy production
The Arinaga wind farm occupies a total area of 40,000 square metres and its repowering will enable 5,400 KW of new installed power to be obtained
The aim of the project is to improve the efficiency of an iconic wind farm located in the Arinaga Industrial Estate
where renewable energies and industry merge
and which was developed by Parque Eólica Carretera de Arinaga
a company in which the Town Council of Agüimes and Enel Green Power España participate
the objective of sharing the value created with local institutions is also achieved
Replacing wind turbines with others using state-of-the-art technology not only increases the production of an important wind resource already existing in the area
but also improves the integration of the wind farm into the electricity grid
Projects of these characteristics confirm Endesa's commitment
to renewable energies and the energy transition in the Canary Islands
developing new wind and photovoltaic generation projects
as well as renewing the existing fleet by repowering this and other wind farms
connected 626.65 MW of new renewable capacity to the electricity grid in Spain from 12 solar installations (499.5 MW)
one wind (123.4 MW) and two hydroelectric (3.6 MW)
more than 8,390 MW of renewable capacity installed in Spain
including: 4,746 MW in hydroelectric power plants; 2,546 MW in wind farms

and are added to the south and west of Tenerife which are also in orange
The high temperatures are also being accompanied by high-altitude haze and strong trade winds on the coast
where gusts could exceed 70 and 80 km/h in the usual areas of trade wind acceleration
The heat will begin to subside from the weekend
The early morning lows have approached that same level in two other locations: Agüimes
where the temperature did not drop below 29.2 degrees
