Minister for Ecological Transition and Energy Mariano Hernández Zapata; the President of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria Antonio Morales Méndez; and the Mayor of Agüimes today took part in the inauguration ceremony of the plants and highlighted the importance of these facilities for the decarbonisation of the Canary Islands’ electricity system Naturgy leads the promotion of the energy transition in the Canary Islands with the inauguration of five new photovoltaic plants in the municipality of Agüimes (Gran Canaria) The entry into operation of these facilities brings the Group’s renewable energy capacity in the region to 136 MW which represents an annual production capacity of around 380 GWh Naturgy already operates a total of 21 facilities in the archipelago which contribute to reducing CO2 emissions by more than 190,000 tonnes per year The combined capacity of the renewable facilities operated by Naturgy alone accounts for around 15% of the total renewable MW currently in operation in the Canary Islands The five new photovoltaic plants (Gran Canaria I and II and Telde I have a total capacity of 19.5 MW and will produce 38 GWh annually equivalent to the consumption of 11,650 homes avoiding the annual production of 25,000 tonnes of CO2 These facilities have involved an investment of €20 million and have generated 140 direct and indirect jobs during the construction the five systems have a total of more than 35,900 photovoltaic modules and a service life of 25 years Naturgy has a portfolio under development in the whole of the Islands with an accumulated capacity of close to 70 MW These projects include the future installation of a hybridisation system using batteries in the town of Agüimes The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Canary Islands Minister for Ecological Transition and Energy the event was attended by Jesús San Emeterio Director of Renewable Generation Spain; Juan Ferrero Head of Renewables Development Spain; Elisa Ferrando Head of Engineering and Construction of Naturgy Renovables and Sergio Auffray Delegate of Renewable Development in the Canary Islands the Canary Islands Minister for Ecological Transition and Energy said that the installation of new renewable energy facilities in the Canary Islands is always “excellent news on our path towards decarbonisation” given that the islands currently only have a 20% penetration of renewables Zapata also pointed to the need to increase this figure as soon as possible since “we have to meet the requirements set by the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) whose objective for the Canary Islands is to reach 58% renewables penetration by 2030” A challenge that he described as “complicated” but for which “the Executive has not stopped working he highlighted the work to promote the implementation of renewables in the Islands with actions such as the recent amendment to the Climate Change Act provide legal certainty and speed up its implementation as the future of the Canary Islands depends on renewable energies” bearing in mind the energy emergency situation in which we find ourselves” Zapata was also keen to remind everyone of the recent announcement by MITECO which is launching the tender for the renewal of the islands’ energy groups by means of which “we will be able to move forward and renew the islands’ generation groups where a greater incursion of renewable energies and special attention to the cleanest offers will be sought” the President of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria stressed that Naturgy’s new plants “contribute to consolidating the island’s position as the leading island territory in the introduction of renewable energies in the archipelago”,adding that these additions to the system “help us to move forward on our path towards an increasingly sustainable model based on our comprehensive Ecoisland project” Morales also stressed that “companies know that in Gran Canaria they can count on a social and political ecosystem favourable to this kind of investment thanks to the Cabildo’s leadership and the consensus achieved to promote the energy transition” reminding those present that the island corporation “has designed a strategy that will allow it to reach 60% penetration of clean energy by 2030 a context in which the Salto de Chira power plant will stand out as a great resource for storage and the introduction of renewables and water production for agriculture” praised Naturgy’s efforts to increase its renewable energy capacity in the Canary Islands and its decision to locate these five new facilities in a municipality – Agüimes – and a region – the Southeast of Gran Canaria – that have been characterised for many years by their commitment to renewable energies sustainability and care for the environment Hernández stressed that the annual production of the five new photovoltaic plants installed in Agüimes is equivalent to 90% of the consumption of all households in the municipality while Naturgy’s total production of energy from renewable sources in the Canary Islands is already equivalent to twice the annual domestic consumption of the entire Southeast region very positive figures that give an idea of the growth that renewables are experiencing in the archipelago “Naturgy’s commitment to the development of renewables in the Canary Islands is a consolidated reality as evidenced by our numerous projects in operation and the portfolio under construction the power in operation in the Canary Islands will reach 145 MW this year” Naturgy has made a commitment to be one of the key players in the energy transition towards a circular and decarbonised economy model The group allocated 90% of the investments made in 2023 to energy transition projects with €1.730 billion spent on renewable power generation and more than €900 million on distribution networks Naturgy currently has an operational installed renewable generation capacity of 2024 and 2025 Investments in renewable energies over the last few years confirm the company’s strategic shift towards a more sustainable energy mix and its commitment to the energy transition All this without ignoring the fundamental objectives of value creation and growth for each of its businesses The municipality of Agüimes has recently opened a new bathing site to the public in the old jetty located in Arinaga This jetty was built at the end of the 19th century and is considered of great historical and ethnographic value The Muelle Viejo is half hidden at the foot of the mountain where the current lighthouse stands where divers plunge into the sea every day to explore the crystalline ocean and large conch shells once used by the inhabitants of Gran Canaria Thanks to recent improvement works, a new pedestrian ramp has been built to access the beach, and the old jetty has been renovated and reinforced. The site has been adapted for bathing thanks to the new wooden and marine aluminium platforms that have been installed, fully respecting the landscape and the original structure. In addition, the paths connecting the old jetty to the lighthouse have been rehabilitated, and several information panels have been installed to explain the natural and historical values of the area to visitors. This new feature provides us with the perfect place to recharge our batteries after a refreshing swim, while we imagine the history behind this relic of the past. The eight wind farms that make up the Agüimes wind power complex have a total of 16 wind turbines, an installed power capacity of 41 MW and represent a 63 million euro investment. These wind farms are expected to generate 127 GWh of electricity per year, equivalent to the annual consumption of 50,000 homes. The complex consists of the following installations: Balcón de Balos, Doramas, La Vaquería, Montaña Perros, Piletas 1, Triquivijate, Vientos del Roque and Haría, which began operating in April. This project represents a significant economic and social boost for the area as around 290 jobs were created during the construction phase. In addition, these installations will be able to replace more conventional electricity generation sources, therefore reducing environmentally harmful and greenhouse-effect emissions by 95,000 tonnes per year and 1.9 million tonnes of CO throughout their life span. “By developing these projects, Naturgy reinforces its commitment to the Canary Islands and demonstrates the company’s strong commitment to increasing renewable energy generation, as reflected in our 2018-2022 Strategic Plan”, said Ana Peris, Power Generation Manager at Naturgy. The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, noted that the inauguration of the wind farms in the Agüimes wind power complex “is an important step for Gran Canaria, and the archipelago as a whole, towards the decarbonisation of our energy system, and gradually but sustainably reducing the percentage of fossil fuels in our energy mix”. The regional President also identified the work carried out over the last three years by the Ministry of the Economy, Industry, Trade and Knowledge on this subject and the importance of the collaboration between the public and private sector to develop alternative energy projects. The President of the Town Council of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, firmly believes that these wind farms are “an important step in introducing renewable energy to Gran Canaria”. “We have been very slow to make use of what our natural conditions can provide us with. Now it is time to focus our efforts on extending the mix of renewable energy in Gran Canaria and be open to investments such as these new wind farms developed by Naturgy”, he added. In addition to the wind farms in the Agüimes wind power complex, Naturgy has constructed an installation in Fuerteventura within the Canary Islands wind power quota, the Fuerteventura Renovables II wind farm, which will also start operating in the next few weeks. The company currently has an additional portfolio of wind and photovoltaic projects being processed in the Canary Islands to submit in the coming wind and photovoltaic tenders announced by the Central Government for 2018 and 2019. The renewables subsidiary of the multinational power company closed 2017 with an installed capacity in operation of 1,147 MW in Spain (979 MW from wind, 110 MW from mini-hydroelectric plants and 58 MW from cogeneration and photovoltaics). The company plans to build a number of renewable energy projects in various autonomous regions over the coming months that will double its size by the end of 2019. 20224:56 PM UTCStunning views of the rare Super Flower Blood Moon eclipseStargazers across Africa Europe and the Americas look upward as a total lunar eclipse turns the moon red Andrew's Ukrainian Orthodox Church is seen as the moon moves through the shadow of the earth during a "Blood Moon" lunar eclipse [2/20]The moon is seen during lunar eclipse in Skopje [5/20]The moon is seen during a lunar eclipse in Aguimes [6/20]Full moon known as the "Flower Moon" rises behind the Arinaga lighthouse before a lunar eclipse on the island of Gran Canaria [8/20]A combination photo shows the moon during a total lunar eclipse as seen from Mexico City [9/20]The moon is seen during a lunar eclipse in Aguimes [10/20]A view of the "Blood Moon" lunar eclipse above the One World Trade Center in New York City REUTERS/Bjoern Kils/New York Media BoatNEW YORK [11/20]A full moon moves through the shadow of the earth during a "Blood Moon" lunar eclipse in San Salvador [12/20]The moon is seen during lunar eclipse in Skopje [13/20]The moon is seen ahead of a total lunar eclipse over Abidjan [14/20]The moon is seen during a lunar eclipse in Tinum [15/20]Clouds roll in as a full moon moves through the shadow of the earth during a "Blood Moon" lunar eclipse in San Diego [16/20]The moon is seen during lunar eclipse in Skopje [17/20]A total lunar eclipse dubbed the 'blood' moon is pictured in Santiago [18/20]The moon is seen during lunar eclipse in Skopje [19/20]The moon is seen during a lunar eclipse in Mexico City REUTERS/Alkis KonstantinidisCAPE SOUNION © 2025 Reuters. municipality to flooding based on return periods ranging from 10 to 500 years classifies the areas into five levels: those with a high probability of flooding in a 10-year return period; those that suffer frequent flooding within a 50-year return; areas with a medium or occasional probability in a 100-year period; those with a low or exceptional probability associated with a 500-year return; and areas not identified as floodable or where there is no probability that the territory will suffer river flooding.' different areas of Spain are ranked with an overall risk percentage produced for properties there with 41 percent of its housing stock at risk was found to be the area most exposed to flood risks with 118,600 homes vulnerable out of a total of 292,774 This is due to the Pisuerga river passing right through the city The most exposed municipalities there are San Miguel del Pino where around a quarter (25 percent) of properties are at risk equivalent to 229,294 homes out of 889,322 in the Andalusian area There the risk factor is the famous Guadalquivir river and the most affected municipalities are La Algaba where 22 percent of homes were found to be at risk The most vulnerable municipalities in this province include Vila-Sacra The report also revealed that 1.3 percent of all homes in Spain are located in areas with some level of exposure to coastal flooding this figure is naturally lower than the overall river flood risk level because it only impacts towns and cities on the coast The methodology used a similar system of analysing different threat levels over time 9 percent of properties in the northern area are considered to be flood-prone most of them with a 'medium' or 'occasional' flood risk probability Among the most exposed parts of the province are Santoña was next with 6 percent of homes at medium or occasional risk There the most vulnerable areas are: Haría Other areas at risk of coastal flooding include Málaga READ MORE: The Spanish cities operation involving large tonnage cranes and highly qualified personnel who measure each movement to the millimetre it was a challenge aggravated by the inconvenience of the strong winds that lash the area practically all year round a company that supplies and installs wind turbines The new wind structures were transported three months ago by sea from Portugal and at the end of March had already reached their destination in the port of Arinaga from where they were transferred on a short road trip to the installations at the wind farm In just seven days the work team had already assembled the first wind turbine In the process of installing the different sections they used special cranes capable of moving up to 300 tons The first section corresponds to lifting the shafts two sections of 22 tons each made of steel that need to be perfectly adjusted to each other and crimped in turn to the 160 pieces on the bolt cage it will be necessary to place the nacelles weighing 35 tons each and the bushings and resin blades each weighing 15 tons Each wind turbine weighs more than 90 tons with a height of 67 metres This is when the project enters the interior wiring installation phase as well as adjusting the configuration for the new wind turbines Repowering work at the Arinaga wind farm is expected to be completed by July this year The project will transform this renewable energy point into the most modern in the Canary Islands and a national benchmark because it involves comprehensive repowering work that "is sometimes more complex than building a new wind farm from scratch" The new wind turbines are more modern and will increase production capacity and extend the operation of the installation for at least two more decades The project consists of the replacement of six of the nine old wind turbines on the wind farm. They were MADE 660 kW AE46 technology turbines and will be replaced with ENERCON 900 kW E44 wind turbines which are much more modern and efficient and will require a total investment of €10 million. Already in 2012, Parque Eólica Carretera de Arinaga, a company consisting of Endesa, through Enel Green Power España, and the Agüimes Town Council decided to undertake the first action to repower the wind farm This involved replacing wind turbines one five and six with others of larger dimensions capable of increasing energy production The Arinaga wind farm occupies a total area of 40,000 square metres and its repowering will enable 5,400 KW of new installed power to be obtained The aim of the project is to improve the efficiency of an iconic wind farm located in the Arinaga Industrial Estate where renewable energies and industry merge and which was developed by Parque Eólica Carretera de Arinaga a company in which the Town Council of Agüimes and Enel Green Power España participate the objective of sharing the value created with local institutions is also achieved Replacing wind turbines with others using state-of-the-art technology not only increases the production of an important wind resource already existing in the area but also improves the integration of the wind farm into the electricity grid Projects of these characteristics confirm Endesa's commitment to renewable energies and the energy transition in the Canary Islands developing new wind and photovoltaic generation projects as well as renewing the existing fleet by repowering this and other wind farms connected 626.65 MW of new renewable capacity to the electricity grid in Spain from 12 solar installations (499.5 MW) one wind (123.4 MW) and two hydroelectric (3.6 MW) more than 8,390 MW of renewable capacity installed in Spain including: 4,746 MW in hydroelectric power plants; 2,546 MW in wind farms According to the latest forecasts from AEMET temperatures will continue to rise today making it the hottest day of the year so far Gran Canaria is expected to reach 43 degrees in the south The red level warning for extreme risk has been extended to the entire island Lanzarote and the Tenerife metropolitan area also rise in level compared to yesterday and are now under an orange warning (high risk) with temperatures of 37 to 38 degrees forecast today and are added to the south and west of Tenerife which are also in orange The high temperatures are also being accompanied by high-altitude haze and strong trade winds on the coast where gusts could exceed 70 and 80 km/h in the usual areas of trade wind acceleration The heat will begin to subside from the weekend The early morning lows have approached that same level in two other locations: Agüimes where the temperature did not drop below 29.2 degrees A number of municipal swimming pools in Gran Canaria’s interior offer some refreshing summer bathing in unique spots You’re lying flat on your back while the sun is slowly burning up every last drop of the water on your skin following your latest dip in the water You just turn your head a little to take in the wonderful view over the stunning Roque Bentayga from the Tejeda municipal swimming pool Gran Canaria hides some fine secluded surprises in its interior The doors to these facilities are open to you for a very reasonable price and include great bathing and superb views So make sure you don’t miss out on a refreshing bathe and the chance to see some of the most picturesque locations on the island from a different perspective Several of Gran Canaria’s swimming pools offer the chance to take a bathe up on high natural surroundings at the heart of fairy tale towns From a Gran Canarian fairy tale in this case Below we highlight a little guided tour around four of them TejedaWe remain in Tejeda Its attractive swimming pool looking out over the Bentayga opens from Monday to Friday from 12.00 to 20.00 and from 10.00 to 20.00 at weekends The town hall will be keeping it open until 15th September during this year’s summer season Children under 4 years old get in for free and non resident adults pay just 4 euros TemisasThe swimming pool here is located at the tiny village of Temisas (in the municipality of Agüimes) a series of whitewashed houses with tiled roofs set within a geological amphitheatre The Municipal Swimming Pool in Temisas will be opening its doors until 29th September in 2019 Its timetable in August and up until 9th September will be from 11.00 to 19.00 the pool can be used on Fridays from 15.00 to 19.00 and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11.00 to 19.00.The facilities have both an adult and a children’s pool on two different levels separated by a stone wall The price for a full day is 2 euros for residents and 5 euros for everyone else package deals for weekends and whole months as well as for families and retired people ArtenaraThe town with the balcony of white houses overlooking the world also has its blue glistening pool.
