A team of researchers has made a major discovery in Albatera
offering new insights into the earliest humans who lived in the southeastern Iberian Peninsula
Their work extends beyond local history and adds valuable information about human settlement in this part of Europe
scientists have confirmed that the first anatomically modern humans reached Albatera more than 20,000 years ago
Francisco Molina Hernández from the University of Alicante and history professor Daniel Belmonte Mas and cultural technician Ana Satorre Pérez
Projectile points are particularly significant because they show the introduction of bows and arrows
a technological advancement linked only to modern humans
Belmonte explains that Albatera would have provided vital resources for these early hunter-gatherers
such as caprids and other animals they relied on for survival

The burning will follow the same procedure as the previous year
carried out under the town’s Agricultural Burning Plan
such as if a pre-emergency level 2 or 3 for fires is declared
or if adverse weather conditions like wind arise
Residents can verify these conditions by contacting the Town Council, the Alicante Provincial Firefighters Consortium at (+34) 965 675 697, or checking the website 112cv.com or the GVA 112 Avisos app
The burning schedule will run from sunrise until 1:30.PM from Monday to Sunday
To have a bonfire a burning application must be submitted, which can be processed through the electronic headquarters of the Albatera town hall at albatera.org by clicking on the “procedures” tab and accessing the “Application for the burning of firewood and stubble.”
applicants can visit Albatera Town Hall and present the necessary documentation in person
The permit issued is valid for 30 days and is only applicable for the specific time and date requested
Regulations stipulate that a prepared area must be established (including a pit
and hoses) to ensure the fire can be controlled quickly if necessary
Additionally, the individual conducting the burning must remain vigilant and carry the permit at all times

The breva fig campaign started last week in the Spanish municipalities of Albatera and Elche
in the province of Alicante; the earliest production areas of this fruit and the most important in terms of volume in Spain
when the production dropped by between 50 and 60% due to the impact of the weather
this year the volume is back to the usual levels
"Last week we started the campaign with small volumes and high prices
since they were the first breva figs of the season," says Teresa Agulló
based in Elche and also specialized in the cultivation and marketing of lemons and pomegranate
allowing us to meet the programs previously agreed with our customers
Prices have dropped a little in the last few days as the supply has grown
but we expect them to remain at acceptable levels throughout the campaign," she says
The Colar variety is the most widely planted in these producing areas of Alicante
which obtain two distinct harvests: that of the breva figs
"The breva fig is a unique fruit that allows us to reach the markets at a time when we don't need to compete with any other origin
we compete strongly with the figs from Turkey
mainly during our second harvest," says the producer and exporter
this year's breva figs are reaching large sizes and the quality is good
and she believes that the demand will take off as the temperatures rise
"Neither in Spain nor in the rest of Europe has the weather been as good as it should be for summer products to be consumed
While it is true that the last batches of figs from Brazil are still available in some markets
they don't actually represent competition for us
that the impact of the COVID sanitary crisis is perhaps taking a toll on the purchasing power of consumers
The fact is that the breva fig is not a cheap product
considered a delicacy and a superfood due to its antioxidant properties and the amount of energy it provides
Alcudia Export-Fruit sells around 40% of its breva figs and regular figs to wholesale markets and supermarket chains nationwide
the figs have stripes or streaks on the skin
which indicate that the product is at its best in terms of sweetness
"This is something they do not understand in other countries
which prefer figs with a completely smooth skin," says the manager of this company
The remaining 60% is exported mainly to countries such as France
They also ship by air to Canada and Singapore
although this year "it is going to be more complicated due to the lack of available flights and the high costs of air transport," she says

There were more than 190 concentration camps
holding 170,000 prisoners in 1938 and between 367,000 and about half a million prisoners when the war ended in 1939 but of them all
the researcher Felipe Mejías has said that the camp at Albatera
on the present day site of San Isidro railway station
It is estimated that 25,000 people died at the camp
all of which remains is a small brick shed that was close to the gatehouse and which is now used as tool store
In a study carried out by the archaeologist and historian Felipe Mejías in the Chair of the Inter universitaria de Memoria Democrática of the Valencian Community of the universities of Alicante
was the most important concentration camp of the Franco regime
both from hunger and diseases or they were shot because of their republican status
Captured in the port of Alicante when they tried to leave Spain on the steamship the SS Stanbrook steam ship
the camp comprised of thousands of important people from the government of the Republic
Mejías was the first researcher to obtain reliable testimonies from residents in the area who not only told him what his parents and grandparents had told him earlier about the concentration camp
but also where human remains could be found in local fields
the archaeologist has now been able to determine that there is a large mass grave or small pits in the area where the concentration camp was located
specifically just outside the fence that surrounded the camp
“There were barracks in front of the fence so the prisoners never knew that prisoners were buried there
or heard the shots of those being executed
but they did not know where the bodies were taken
as a result of which they have never been found
“I have 4 oral and reliable testimonies that have told me how bones and corpses were found in these areas by local farmers,” he explains
“One of the residents told me that he found a skull with his sister while his father was working the land with a tractor and it was exposed”
He says that it is not the only discovery
In the same area a femur and an arm were found
the testimony that caused the most impact and that led to the conclusion that there is a common grave was that of a worker
during some work to install pipes in the area of the concentration camp
two bodies were found covered with a grey substance
“The most shocking thing was that they closed up the ditch
and they then opened another one 10 metres away where they found more corpses
“When he told me I was excited,” said the archaeologist who explained that “this shows that there is a large grave here and now we will have to do excavation work with georadar device in order to locate the bodies
Compromís has presented in the Congress of deputies this week a proposal for the area to be protected as a space of memory and thus begin the work
which will be further protected by the National Historical Memory Act and the recently approved Autonomous Democratic Memory Act
However there are still many unknowns before the mysteries surrounding this concentration camp can be resolved
Some testimonies even indicate that it was visited by Nazi soldiers sent by Hitler
one thought now being that Albatera became the example of what later became the extermination camps of German fascism
This is something that other studies will now also have to investigate

Police authorities from Lorca and Elche police stations in Spain raided six cannabis plantations and seized 2,181 plants
13 members of the group of Albanian and Spanish nationality
11 house checks were carried out in houses located in the Murcian cities of Calasparra
Albatera and Tibi in Alicante. The operation followed a months-long joint investigation between police units
as agents were aware of the possible existence of various cannabis plantations located inside country houses in the two provinces and allegedly run by the same group composed of mainly people of Albanian nationality
Italians and Spaniards. According to information within the criminal network
a division of functions was created among the members of the group
The first level dealt with the location of houses
while the second one rented them with false documentation provided by the Albanian members
a third group made up of members with the necessary technical knowledge was responsible for assembling the plantations
with a fourth in charge of cutting and drying the plants for subsequent transport outside Spain. Finally
the investigators managed to locate a total of 11 houses
distributed throughout the Alicante and Murcian area
while the rest were used as 'drug warehouses'
where the main people involved stayed and hid the money of the profits
