Fundación Plant for the Planet EspañaAll rights reserved25 April 2024Last update:5 December 2024Several green belts have been created in Spanish cities by local authorities. The project was born in Alcalá de Henares as a citizens' initiative. It aims to involve the community and the various stakeholders in a public-private-participatory governance model.
This Andalusian city of 200,000 inhabitants had already seen a series of citizens' initiatives to green the city. After contacting them, the Fundación Plant-for-the-Planet España identified the need for a professional team dedicated to the green belt project in order to clear all the administrative, financial and organisational obstacles and develop the project.
In the first part of the project, all the areas that could be restored by planting native plants adapted to the environment were identified. This mapping identified 23 different areas surrounding the city that could form the basis of the future green belt.
At the same time, the team worked with local organizations and the Alcalá de Henares City Council to coordinate with schools to get students involved in environmental and climate awareness activities. One of the aims of this project is to train and empower young people to become future local climate leaders.
Launched in February 2024, this program aims to plant more than 25,000 native and adapted plants before 2030.

Investigation into country’s largest cocaine bust reveals cash in home of former head of anti-money laundering
Spain has arrested one of its top police officers after €20m (£17m) was found hidden in the walls of his house
as part of an investigation into the country’s largest-ever cocaine bust
Óscar Sánchez Gil was until recently the head of the fraud and anti-money laundering division of Spain’s national police force in Madrid
Officers arrested him last week along with 15 other people
who is also a police officer in the Madrid region
hidden in the walls and ceilings of the couple’s home in Alcalá de Henares
a town of about 195,000 inhabitants located 18 miles (30km) east of the Spanish capital
The couple have been charged with drug trafficking
corruption and membership of a criminal organisation after last week appearing before a Madrid court
Spanish media said the arrests were linked to the seizure last month of 13 tonnes of cocaine that arrived in the southern port of Algeciras from Ecuador’s largest city Guayaquil – a drug-trafficking hub – hidden among crates of bananas
Police said the drug bust – which they only announced last week – is the largest-ever haul of cocaine in Spain and “one of the largest seizures in the world”
The container was destined for a Spanish importer based in the south-eastern coastal town of Alicante “who had been receiving large quantities of fruit imported from Ecuador for years”
Police searched several homes and offices in Madrid and Alicante after the cocaine seizure
These operations uncovered links between the importer and Sánchez Gil
He was already under suspicion by his colleagues who had tapped his phone
who is in his 40s and lives in a brick house protected by metal gates
is suspected of having worked for the drug traffickers for “at least five years”
Free weekly newsletterThe most pressing stories and debates for Europeans – from identity to economics to the environment
he allegedly provided them with information on the surveillance of containers in Spanish ports
according to a source close to the investigation
the large sums of money found in his home led police officers quoted by El Mundo to compare his house “to that of Pablo Escobar”
the notorious Colombian drug baron who was shot dead by police in 1993
A nephew of Escobar once said he found a plastic bag with money worth $18m hidden in the wall of one of his uncle’s houses
Part of the money Sánchez Gil amassed in recent years was laundered through the purchase of crypto-currencies and a large fleet of private hire vehicles registered in the name of one of his relatives
Spain is a main entry point for drugs into Europe because of its close ties with former colonies in Latin America such as major cocaine producers Colombia and Peru

Zaragoza-based architecture studio Sebastián Arquitectos, teaming up with Estudio Habito
Daniel López de Uralde and the archaeologist José Francisco Casabona
have won the ideas competition for the restoration of the buildings to the west of the former Archbishop Palace
convened by the MIVAU as an extension of the Archaeological Museum of Alcalá
This space in the city of Alcalá has long been a subject of unresolved debate
underused as a mere car park and with the result of this competition
a step is taken to consolidate one of the most emblematic areas of this university city
of Roman origin on the banks of the Henares River
The team led by Sebastián Arquitectos has presented an interesting proposal that pays attention to one of the most interesting and often hidden characteristics of the morphology of Alcalá
the construction of its urban structure through courtyards and cloisters
a vibrant inner world of gardens and courtyards
which are a sample of the different cultures that have passed through the city since its Roman foundation
university status and archbishopric.
The new proposal replicates the construction of a cloister that completes the chained structure of similar spaces
the creation of a public square that organizes the access to the different spaces
a new layer like a fragmented "palimpsest," and a set of pieces that will function as urban "furniture" inserted and dialoguing with the existing structures.
Two new pieces are created to complete the set
The first is semi-buried as a work and storage space for archaeologists
which spatially closes the new cloister linked to the stretches of the old wall
The second is a solid and suspended volume that rests on the existing arches
The different functional units of the program are organized around the cloister: the entrance hall
the archaeology tower and the archaeology base
Casa de los Arqueólogos of Alcalá de Henares by Sebastián Arquitectos and Estudio Habito
Project description by Sebastián Arquitectos
Let's look closely at the historic centre of Alcalá de Henares
We can see how the main historic buildings
have been formed as compact volumes around courtyards and cloisters that
depending on the complexity of the programme
Consolidating the Roman and Muslim heritage
this is a typology strongly linked to the historic centre
specifically the area of the university and the archbishop's palace
and which has been shaped as an architectural fabric delimited by large walls towards the exterior that displays an extraordinarily rich inner world of gardens and courtyards
The project is located in an area of action with a high historical and archaeological content
in the vicinity of the Archbishop's Palace of Alcalá de Henares
as well as very close to the Archaeological and Paleontological Museum of the Community of Madrid
The disappearance of the former Central General Archive of the Kingdom
left a void and ruins in which it is now proposed to intervene
With such particular environmental conditions
the place and its memory are the first materials with which the architect must build
looking at the traces of the old buildings and understanding the traces of what was there
the architecture has two defined formative keys
the enclosure or cloister as a spatial unit and the wall as an element that delimits it
The concatenation of buildings and programs around cloisters
all of them intertwined by the constant texture of brick walls
ensured material continuity with the canvases of the walled enclosure and the historical architecture of Alcalá
We propose to build a new cloister that completes the architecture that previously defined the historical access threshold
and is linked to the new use that the ruins of the former General Archive will have
And it is precisely this archaeological sense that will give character to the intervention
will openly show its fragmentary and asymmetrical condition in the permanence of the pieces that must be preserved as the history of the place
The new program will assume this condition
a palimpsest that completes the writing of what was left there
All the proposed solutions abound in this question
from the archaeological presence of the remains of the building
to the insertion of the new pieces in them as “furniture” that are inserted into the architectural frames and skeletons
the work and storage space of the archaeologists
linking it with the canvases of the old wall
suspended volume that rests on the existing arches
and is visually related to the cubes of the old wall
closing the walled complex of the garden of the Archbishop's Palace
The presence of archaeology is fundamental in this project
and reaches all these spaces as an extension and part of a large archaeological museum
can always be present for the public and users
making the richness of its past visible to the visitor
The entire proposal revolves around the creation of the new cloister
which in addition to acting as a public square that concentrates social activity
with access to the disappeared cloister of the General Archive
whose traces will be recovered in the treatment of the access pavement
and with the vehicular access from the south patio
This entire complex of linked courtyards and gardens will form a new network of parks in the walled enclosure
The different functional units of the programme are organised around the cloister:
which allows access from the archaeological museum or the car park
It is located at the junction between the new and the old
it incorporates the existing ground-floor archway and is integrated through the use of brick
using recessed joints to show that the construction of these factories is not from the same period
there are the more public uses of the cafeteria
- Archaeology Bay.On the other side of the lobby
it gives access to the archaeology complex and is housed between the existing walls of the East and North bays of the old General Archive
configuring an “L”-shaped piece in which an easily reversible action is proposed
- Archaeology Tower. We propose using this space as a special safe that protects the most valuable part of the complex
A deposit that uses the tower as a large vertical shelf
A new management system could be implemented in future phases
consisting of a lifting platform that allows the automated classification and handling of all the pieces stored in the vertical warehouse
- Archaeological plinth. It is proposed as an abstract and simple rectangular volume
which completes the typological composition of the cloister and is partially buried
and acting as a plinth that highlights and highlights the rest of the buildings in the complex
Inside it are located the marking workshop and the transit warehouse
it incorporates a large brisoleil in its large slit hole
which has the double function of sun protection and allows archaeological objects to be placed as a display case facing the cloister

Criterion (vi): The contribution of Alcalá de Henares to the intellectual development of humankind finds expression in its materialization of the Civitas Dei
in the advances in linguistics that took place there
not least in the definition of the Spanish language
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra and his masterpiece Don Quixote
The University and Historic Precinct of Alcalá de Henares have maintained the values that made Alcalá a creation to be imitated for centuries
The grid-like urban layout and design of the university
the medieval city street networks with its Calle Mayor as the main artery
are all in an exemplary state of conservation
most of the buildings that were constructed when the university was created have maintained or recovered their original uses
The property appropriately reflects the importance of the creation of the first planned University City in history and the representation of the Civitas Dei in the Baroque period
the precinct has a total of 785 buildings of which 465 are protected within the urban plan
60% of the buildings are listed and are declared to be of historic interest
in spite of the closure of the University between 1836 and 1976
and the lack of protection during part of the 20th century until it was declared by the Spanish state to be of Historic Value in 1968
Alcalá has conserved the integrity of the precinct as a whole
In spite of the many vicissitudes that it has undergone in the past 160 years the property has retained a substantial degree of authenticity in its urban fabric and in many of its historic buildings
including representative institutional buildings as well as protected residential buildings
authenticity has been retained as far as materials and form are concerned
most of its buildings were used for different purposes such as barracks
as they were used and occupied continuously over the years
these buildings were conserved without suffering major alteration
The legal protection of the property and the re-opening of the University also triggered an intensive process of recuperation that allowed for the recovery of its authenticity of function after a century and a half
Most of the buildings of historic significance are once again being used to house the academic institutions
the city’s convents are still being used for religious purposes
Alcalá’s historic city centre has the highest degree of legal protection since it was declared to be of Historic Value in 1968
Both the 1985 Ley de Patrimonio Histórico Español (the Spanish State’s Heritage Law)
as well as the 1998 Ley de Patrimonio Histórico de la Comunidad de Madrid (the Autonomous Community of Madrid’s Heritage Law)
as well as individual buildings that have special listings
the city council established protection regulations that were complemented in 1991 by the Plan General de Ordenación Urbana (Town Planning Act) and which culminated in the Plan Especial de Protección del Casco Histórico (Special Protection Act for the Historic City Centre) passed in 1998
The Plan Especial lays down regulations regarding works of consolidation
refurbishment and re-structuring according to the level of protection of the building: monumental
the type of construction and materials of the building must be respected
the regulations regarding the construction of new buildings depend on the historic constructions that are to be recovered
the given use of the building and aesthetic conditions as well as the position of advertising and other installations on the constructions
Provisions are also included to carry out a methodical archaeological study of every intervention in the historic precinct
For the financing of interventions in the historic precinct
Alcalá has a Consortium constituted by the City Council
the University and the Autonomous Community of Madrid
It also has its own financial resources as well as those that come from regional administrations and European funds
The Management Plan for the Historic Precinct will also take into consideration aspects regarding mobility
integrating interventions that have already been carried out
The regulation of these actions aims to prevent the potential threats posed by urban mobility
overexploitation and the depopulation of the historic precinct
Project proposals are set according to an investment scheme and will be monitored through a programme based on a precise group of indicators
In addition there is a plan to reform many of the inappropriate constructions built in the 1970s

Capactiy at two sites to be leased to hyperscalers
Colocation firm Nabiax has secured leases totaling 10MW for its data center campuses in Madrid
The company will add 7.5MW and 2.5MW of IT capacity at its Alcala de Henares and Julian Camarillo data center campuses
The additional capacity has already been leased out to two unnamed hyperscalers
The company plans to invest €47 million ($51m) to complete the capacity expansion
which will take the company’s total installed capacity to 36MW
“We continue to provide quality service to all our customers and continue to expand our operations to consolidate our leading position in data centers nationwide
and our role as the partner of choice for hyperscalers in Spain,” said Emilio Diaz
He added that the company’s goal is to be the first to reach 100MW of installed power in Spain
It was only in June last year that Nabiax began expansion works at its Alcala de Henares data center
bringing the facility’s IT capacity to 22MW
In May 2021 Telefónica announced it had sold a further four data centers to Asterion Industrial Partners in exchange for a 20 percent stake in its Nabiax hosting business: two facilities in Chile and two Spanish sites in Madrid and Terrassa
Last year
Asterion and Telefonica began selling off parts of Nabiax
with Actis acquiring 11 data centers in Latin America from Nabiax in March 2023
Nabiax currently lists three data centers on its website; two in Madrid and one in Barcelona
Madrid is also home to operators such as Digital Realty
A recent report from JLL predicted Madrid would see an average of 49 percent increase in market size this year

To live a fairytale Christmas you don't have to go far away: these are some of the most beautiful Christmas villages and towns near Madrid
the region is extensive and in it you can find Christmas villages and towns with lots of charm
birthplace of Cervantes… And an essential stop to experience the Christmas season
Alcalá de Henares is always a safe bet and at Christmas time it is brimming with activity
the Plaza de Cervantes will be the epicenter of the festivities: the Christmas market

creates a unique atmosphere that is worth experiencing first hand
In which to enjoy its Christmas market in the Plaza Mayor and the decorations that adorn the facades of the houses
It is possible that, being from Madrid, you have made more than one express trip to San Lorenzo de El Escorial
but if none of them has been between December and January
there is a cause that justifies returning: its Monumental Nativity Scene
which occupies about 5,000 square meters of its historic center and has been declared a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest
View this post on Instagram In a list of the most Christmas municipalities could not miss Getafe, which this year has in Navimagic its greatest exponent: a Ferris wheel
Santa Claus’ house and children’s train
an ice rink and a merry-go-round are just some of its attractions
If one of the things you enjoy most about Christmas is food, your next holiday destination should be Leganés: there the Ayuntamiento pepinero has organized Gula Fest Xmas Edition
the largest Christmas gastronomic fair in the Community of Madrid
More than 35 restaurants participate in a space of more than 35,000 square meters full of lights and Christmas decorations
We know that it is neither a town nor a municipality and that it is not within the Community of Madrid
but given its proximity (about 50 minutes by car) and how spectacular it is at this time of year we can not fail to recommend a visit
Just strolling through the streets among its Christmas lights is worth the trip
but it also has a wide range of activities for these dates
Shows and concerts have been programmed, there are festive attractions and traditions such as the migas (breadcrumbs) contest are back. The complete Christmas program can be consulted at this link

the rhythm of the carnival will reach cities and towns near Madrid
There will be from live dances to 'manteos' of wigs
With the long weekend just around the corner, the towns and cities surrounding the capital are preparing their itinerary of carnival shows
They will be filled with joyful costumes from the first day of March until the traditional Burial of the Sardine

the women would throw the rag doll and the men would try to catch it
The Asociación Cultural Hijos y Amigos de Alcalá and the folk group Pliego de Cordel have brought this unique tradition back to Alcalá de Henares for another year: there will be a manteo in its historic center and a parade in its honor
Alcalá de Henares has a great Carnival atmosphere
This year it will organize seven parades between March 1 and 5
will put soundtrack to the weekend with a comparsa of bagpipers

Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and BiologyCitation Excerpt :From among human tissues that are used commonly as biomarkers such as blood
the determination of trace elements and environmental toxins in hair and nails provide several advantages [4,12]
Blood and urine are preferable sources for recent heavy metal exposures whereas hair and nails signifies long term exposure [13,14]
Although there are some drawbacks such as potential external contamination
life style etc.) and problems with elaborating reference values
hair and nails are used widely as biomarkers to detect trace element exposure since they express a permanent record of trace elements that correlate to both normal and abnormal metabolism and environmental assimilations [15]
Environmental Toxicology and PharmacologyCitation Excerpt :At the similar ranges of age
a comparison of the mean concentrations of As and Cd in the hair of residents in different countries (Table 4) reveals that hair As and Cd concentrations in the present study were much lower than in most other countries investigated except for Italy and Russia (Varrica et al.
Hair Pb concentrations were slightly lower than in Pakistan
Cd and Pb concentrations in the Chinese cities sampled were at low levels within Asia but were still at slightly higher levels than in Italy
Environmental Toxicology and PharmacologyCitation Excerpt :Therefore
the use of hair as a biomonitor can be controversial
especially due to the lack of information available to define a normal range for trace element levels in the general population (Barbosa et al.
the use of the methodology and strict inclusion criteria developed by our group could facilitate the use of human hair as a screening tool in environmental bio-monitoring studies to help to identify individuals with higher exposures to metals and metalloids (Peña-Fernández et al.
Due to the limited availability of information on levels of metals and metalloids in hair in Spain
a comprehensive study of Human Bio-monitoring (HBM) in hair of school children and teenagers was undertaken in one of the largest cities in the Community of Madrid

Located in the historic center of Alcalá de Henares
They are part of the monumental façade of the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso
the work of the architect Gil de Hontañón (1537-1553)
The College was declared a National Monument on 19 March 1914
the “Cisneriana Foundation Block” was declared a Site of Cultural Interest by Decree 12/2019
The columns and chains of the Plaza San Diego are located in the historic center of Alcalá de Henares and form part of the monumental façade of the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso
the main building of the Historical University of Alcalá and is currently its headquarters
The columns are located in the fish market
a space located in front of its main façade whose function was to delimit the jurisdiction of the University
This delimitation was not contemplated in the initial project of Gil de Hontañón
but was raised once the monumental façade was finished
the fish market was not completed until 1561 when the chains were forged by the Montoya brothers
the intervened columns that currently precede the monumental façade of San Ildefonso are not the original columns installed in 1554
they were replaced in the restoration directed by the architect Jose Manuel González Valcárcel (1958-1960)
as a consequence of the poor state of conservation they presented
The current columns replicate in form the columns of Pedro de la Cotera
although apparently the pattern is modified
since in the graphic documentation consulted and dated in 1924
there were two columns and not the pillars that we now find
The area of the fish market that has been intervened has an approximate area of 367 m2
delimited by 14 columns with capitals of Ionic order and four pillars of quadrangular section (two at the ends of the space and two in the central street) marking the access to the Colegio de Sal Ildefonso
The columns generally presented a bad state of conservation as a result of the combination of intrinsic alteration factors
related to the very nature of the materials
and extrinsic alteration factors (humidity
The main cause of degradation of the columns and chains was caused by environmental factors
although the state of conservation was very uneven depending on the intrinsic characteristics of the limestone and its location within the complex
it was possible to find columns with an acceptable state of conservation
while others had significant injuries that put their conservation at risk in the short and medium term
The main damages detected in the stone material were: superficial deposits
numerous interventions with inadequate mortars (filling and sealing portland cement mortar) were located
which contributed to the bad image and deterioration of the columns
it is worth noting the presence of graffiti that
although they did not damage the physical integrity of the stone material
did affect the aesthetic unity of the complex
the main alterations detected in the metal chains were fractures
surface oxidation and volumetric faults that caused a lack of support and loss of anchorage between elements
at the initiative of the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Community of Madrid
the restoration of the columns and chains of Plaza San Diego in Alcalá de Henares was carried out
The work began with an exhaustive process of graphic documentation of each of the columns: planimetric survey
location of alterations and photographic record
After carrying out tests and pertinent treatment tests
a superficial cleaning was carried out and both the mortars in poor condition and the old inadequate interventions were eliminated
The next step consisted in the application of a treatment against biodeterioration that was applied by spraying on the entire stone surface
a deeper mechanical cleaning was carried out
the objective of which was to eliminate all those deposits and materials that affected both the legibility and the physical-chemical stability of the stone material
structural consolidation work was carried out: sewing
anchoring and adhesion of all those fractured elements through the use of fiberglass rods and epoxy resin
Those areas where significant volumetric losses had occurred were treated
which did not allow the correct evacuation of rainwater or which made it difficult to read the whole
for which volume reintegrations were made with lime-based restoration mortars and expressly formulated
After evaluating the state of conservation of the metallic material of the columns
a series of restoration treatments were carried out aimed at preserving the metal: disassembly
Finally we can conclude that with this intervention it has been possible to recover the original aesthetic values of the columns and stop the progress of their deterioration
not only to the columns but to the whole of Plaza San Diego
which offers a new and improved image to its visitors
The Cisneriana Foundational Block was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest by Decree 12/2019
In 1495 a historical event takes place that will mark the development of Alcalá de Henares
but will give it the imprint and character that the city will preserve to this day: the foundation of the University by Cardinal Francisco Jiménez of Cisneros
In 1499 Pope Alexander VI issued a Bull by which he authorized the foundation of the College and Chairs
beginning its first academic year in 1508 and granting himself in 1512 the jurisdiction of University Studies
Cisneros wanted to make Alcalá a benchmark for the regeneration of society and transform it into the academic and cultural capital of Modern Spain
turning the University into one of the most outstanding in Europe in whose classrooms important figures of the Spanish Golden Age would be trained
Ignacio de Loyola or Santo Tomás de Villanueva
the task of renovating and improving the facilities and public infrastructures inherited from the medieval period
insufficient and deficient for the new design of the university city devised by Cisneros
The creation of an academic neighborhood with minor schools
a university hospital and a large number of houses to house students and teachers was proposed
As the matrix of the Complutense institution: the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso
El College of San Ildefonso It was founded in 1499 designed by the architect Pedro de Gumiel and built on two floors with brick and rammed earth
It was organized around the Patio Mayor de Escuelas
the rectory chamber and the student rooms were located
It constituted the core and governing center of the Institution
The rector decided to build a large façade to replace the original one
The works would be entrusted to the architect Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón in 1537
assisted by the quantity surveyors Juan de la Riba and Pedro de la Cotera
some of the most outstanding stonemasons and sculptors of the period were involved in its decoration
The iconographic program of the facade alludes to wisdom and ecclesiastical power
The access door is crowned by the Cisneros coat of arms and a medallion with the figure of San Ildefonso
built by Pedro de la Cotera in 1564; so called because it welcomed students of Latin
or the Santo Tomás de Villanueva courtyard
designed at the beginning of the XNUMXth century by Juan Gómez de Mora and finished off years later by José Sopeña
which is one of the hallmarks of the University

April is the month for celebrating literature
the King and Queen were part of the Miguel de Cervantes Prize festivities
shining a spotlight on some of the world’s greatest Spanish-language literary works
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain arrived at the University of Alcala de Henares on Monday for the annual presentation of the Miguel de Cervantes Prize
The Cervantes Prize is the most prestigious award granted to literature written in the Spanish language
Rather than singling out individual works for the honor
the prize is given for a larger body of lifetime work
This year’s prize was presented to Rafael Cadenas
The royal couple presented the award to Cadenas during a ceremony on Monday
93-year-old Cadenas urged his fellow writers and speakers to continue to embrace the Spanish language and take care to help preserve its continued use on the world stage
For the prize presentation on Monday, Queen Letizia wore a sage green dress with ivory polka dots from the Spanish brand Vogana. She wore the same dress in October 2022 for Spain’s National Day celebrations
She accessorized with a striking pair of earrings with raw
The earrings come from the company Pepe Alba
They’re the brand’s “Day and Night Earrings,” made of gold-plated silver
Here’s another look at Letizia wearing the modern earrings for Monday’s prize presentation
King Felipe and Queen Letizia were back at the Royal Palace in Madrid
hosting the traditional post-prize luncheon
With a pink and white printed dress, Letizia wore diamond pendant earrings with pearl drops. The pair (which is different from the earrings set with Australian pearl drops) has been in her jewelry box since at least 2007
For both Monday and Tuesday’s appearances, Letizia also wore her Coreterno ring, a recent addition to her jewelry collection
Spanish insurance firm Mapfre has sold its data center in Madrid
CBRE’s Spanish unit this week announced on LinkedIn that it advised Mapfre on the sale of its 10MW facility in Alcalá de Henares
Terms of the sale-leaseback deal – including the buyer – weren’t provided
Reports that the insurance firm was looking to sell the site surfaced last year
More than 30 bidders were said to be interested
Set on 16,000 sqm (172,220 sq ft) with 24,000 sqm (258,330 sq ft) of technical space, the data center was inaugurated by Mapfre in 2013. Uptime lists a Tier III-certified facility – CPD Mapfre Tales de Mileto – as owned by Mapfre
senior director and head of European data center capital markets at CBRE
said: "CBRE's European data center capital markets team are really pleased to have represented Spanish insurance company Mapfre on the sale and partial leaseback of its turnkey data center facility in Alcalá de Henares in Madrid
at a time when we are seeing high levels of new tenant demand in the Madrid area
There was significant interest in this asset from a range of different operators.”
added: "This operation becomes a milestone in the Spanish market and highlights the investor interest in the Data Center sector
which is at a time of great development and dynamism."
Pérez-Llorca provided legal advice on the deal
Last year's reports suggested that Mapfre no longer viewed its ownership of the data center as ‘strategic’ to the company
but was aiming to keep its IT equipment in the facility and remain as a tenant of the potential buyer
Part of the infrastructure was reportedly already leased to technology firms such as IBM

Students from all around the world head to Madrid to learn the planet’s second most widely spoken language
The University of Alcalá is a world leader in teaching Spanish language and culture and is home to Alcalingua
a centre dedicated to teaching Spanish to international students and training Spanish teachers
The centre’s renowned language training is complemented by academic and cultural activities thanks to its cooperation with organisations dedicated to teaching Spanish
and organisations dedicated to international students
including APUNE and the Erasmus Mundus Association
combined intensive programmes and short-term study-abroad mobilities
“My experience at the university has been wonderful,” de Marco says
and the teachers try to include me as much as possible in their classes and make themselves available in case I don’t understand something
they don’t treat me differently just because I’m an Erasmus student
They demand from me what they demand from others
and that’s what I like the most because they motivate me to always do more
“They create the feeling that I’m not different because I am not a Spanish speaker
but rather I have the ability and the right to do what everyone else does
they always try to make connections to the situation in Italy or the home countries of the other Erasmus students so that the perspectives of the rest of the class are also broadened and this exchange is fruitful for everyone on a cultural level
“What I like most about the university is that students have the option of choosing whether to attend university in the morning or afternoon
thus enabling them to reconcile their studies with their job
“Another positive thing is the challenges and tasks that the teachers give us on a weekly or monthly basis so that we can approach the topic being studied in a practical way and reflect on it
The same is true for group projects that bring us closer to the business world
making us see risks and dangers in the real world and that not everything is based on theories
where students can enjoy a wide range of exhibitions
which help students expand and deepen their knowledge of Spanish culture
“I really like the joy that Spaniards transmit in general,” de Marco says
“It is very difficult to find someone who does not greet you
who does not smile at you or who does not welcome you as if you were a family member
I also like the habit of doing everything a little later than other European countries
Spaniards know how to reconcile work with fun.”

Spain's Roman Catholic Church on Friday defended a bishop whose diocese near Madrid is being investigated after a newspaper reported it ran "courses" to "cure" gay men of their homosexuality
The regional government of Madrid said Tuesday it was investigating whether the diocese of Alcala de Henares had broken anti-homophobia laws after online newspaper El Diario reported a journalist posing as a gay man trying to change his sexuality attended a counseling session provided by the diocese
The newspaper said the diocese has allegedly been running "illegal courses" to "cure" homosexuality since 2009 when Juan Antonio Reig Pla
who has a long history of speaking out against homosexuality
some of them draped with the rainbow flag of gay pride
protested against the bishop inside Alcala de Henares' cathedral on Tuesday evening just before mass was due to start
They chanted "leave Alcala" and "love doesn't have a cure
hate does" before police arrived and ordered them to leave
In a statement on its website the diocese of Alcala de Henares called the report "fake news" and a "theatrical montage"
but added it offered help to those who request it
the spokesman for Spain's Episcopal Conference
expressed his "support and affection" for the bishop of Alcala and "rejected the irruption of a group of vociferous people in a temple where a mass was being celebrated."
He added "homosexuality is not cured" but the Church was willing to "accompany" people who are "uncomfortable" with their homosexuality
Promoting or carrying out conversion therapy is banned in the region of Madrid
regardless of whether the person undergoing it has consented or not
Punishments include fines of up to 45,000 euros ($51,000)
Bishop Reig Pla has routinely been criticized by gay rights groups because of his vocal opposition to homosexuality
In 2012 gay rights groups and leftist parties filed a lawsuit against the bishop for inciting hatred after he delivered a Good Friday sermon in which he lamented how some gay men "prostitute themselves or go to gay night clubs" in order to "validate" their struggle
adding "what they encounter is pure hell." A judge in Alcala de Henares dismissed the lawsuit
The Cathedral of Alcala de Henares is one of many buildings owned by the Catholic Church in Alcala de Henares
is broke and is pursuing a plan to have the church pay additional taxes
The Catholic Church is Spain's largest and richest landowner
though its nonprofit status means it is exempt from paying most taxes
One college town just outside Madrid is leading an effort by some Spanish municipalities to serve the church an up-to-date property tax bill
Alcala de Henares is re-evaluating the status of hundreds of church holdings that have been exempt from paying property tax for hundreds of years
Off a cobblestone street in Alcala de Henares
an ancient Roman town about 20 miles from Madrid
one of the nuns calls out from behind a wooden shutter
"That'll be 19 euros" — about $25 — the nun says
shoving four delicately wrapped almond tins through a turnstile
the nuns here run a side business selling candied almonds from this tiny window in their convent
Their vows demand that they not be seen in public
So they sell their goodies through a rotating wooden screen
The nuns' profits from their almond enterprise are probably meager — but that's beside the point
The nuns are using at least part of this convent for commercial purposes
"We're studying whether any church properties that have long been listed as charities are actually being used for commercial activities
they'll have to start paying tax," said city councilman Anselmo Avendano
Avendano passed a motion to re-evaluate church holdings by square footage
if one out of 30 rooms in a convent is selling sweets
That's how the system is supposed to work already
Alcala's campaign has ruffled feathers on high
we will not denounce an international agreement
It would be irresponsible," Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy told reporters last year
He says any efforts to press the church for more tax would violate a 1979 treaty with the Vatican
On one side of this disagreement are cash-strapped municipalities and on the other
"We're not questioning the church's good works — charity for the elderly or poor or ill
What we want is to re-examine property the church uses to make a profit," Avendano saild
The Catholic Church owns about half of this city
Sometimes people die and leave their house or business to the church
"Some of the Catholic schools have swimming pools
and they charge a fee to area residents to swim there on weekends
So the school should be paying tax on that activity
But they haven't been," said another city councilman
dates to the Middle Ages when vendors were required to give one-third of their profits to the Catholic Church
there's a different tax man in town who happens to be broke
The city of Alcala de Henares is $400 million in debt
if the Catholic Church had to pay tax on all its property in Spain
towns are cutting their budgets for health care
But the Catholic Church hasn't had to make a single cut because it gets money from the state," said Juanjo Pico
a Spanish group that lobbies for the separation of church and state
they can check a box to donate money to the church — and the state deducts it automatically
But church officials question why this seems to be only about them
"Why isn't this debate about all nonprofit groups?" asked Fernando Gimenez Barriocanal
the financial director at Spain's Council of Bishops
He says the church has the same tax deal as the Red Cross and other private
He also hints at what could happen if the Catholic Church were to have to pay more
we'd have to direct more of our money to pay those taxes
The church would still want to help those in need
but we'd have less money to do that," he said
The church may be Spain's biggest landowner
but it's also the biggest charity here — at a time when public welfare programs are being cut and unemployment tops 26 percent
The Alcala town council aims to complete its land survey by the end of the year — and possibly serve the Catholic Church with an updated tax bill

The capital turns to Christmas for another year
nougat arrives in the bakeries and street markets invade the squares
the events that occupy these dates have a lot to do with sharing
leisurely recreation and stroll under an exceptional sky of lights
Here’s how we tell you about the new Christmas season
The best-known Christmas markets in Madrid start in mid-November and last until early January
such as the one in Plaza Mayor or Plaza de España
the city is full of pop ups and there are usually other themed markets like the Xmas Shop of florist Sally Hambleton or the Mercadillo del Gato at The Westin Palace with accessories
cosmetics… Among many others that are scattered around the city
One of the most obvious Christmas phenomena is what happens with the review of movies and the re-reading of books
which some experts call Hygge and also Comfort TV
has great successes during Christmas: Love Actually type movies
but also superhero fictions that take us to other planets and fictional situations
What time of the year is synonymous with “illusion”
of returning home (to that home we created with family or friends) and of letting ourselves be carried away by the most primitive illusion
experiences like the Vortex tunnel (in the picture) will make you rethink what is real
What could be more Christmassy than going to the movies and soaking up the winter premieres with some popcorn
Cinesa’s 14 cinemas in Madrid are buzzing with premieres such as Vaiana 2 or the anime of The Lord of the Rings (already in theaters) and the next ones for this holiday season
Mufasa (December 20) or Sonic 3 (December 25)
This card also includes a 10% discount on bar products and invitations to special screenings and other exclusive benefits
There are two types of subscriptions (Standard
with additional surcharges for Luxe cinemas; and Luxe
which includes access to this premium cinema)
Cinesa Proyecciones and Cinesa Heron City las Rozas; Luxe cinemas in Cinesa La Moraleja
Cinesa Equinoccio and Cinesa Plaza Loranca 2
Christmas -and the cold of this season- brings to the center of Madrid the possibility of skating outdoors
The usual rinks are those in Plaza de Colón and Plaza de España
which also have a market around with food and crafts to complete the festive plan
where there will be exhibitions by the Madrid Winter Sports Federation
are also usually extended until the beginning of January
All this magic comes from a festival: the world-renowned Tomorrowland
the organizers have created an experience that highlights its identity through these magical worlds that year after year invade the festival: different dreamlike themes such as The Story of Planaxis
Pure imagination to live among digital installations and a Virtual Reality experience in one of the largest halls in the world
the schedule of this Christmas bus is from 18h to 22:00h
with intervals of between 5 and 10 minutes between one bus and the next
The price of the general Christmas ticket is 10€
Departure from the Jardines del Descubrimiento (Serrano street in front of number 30)
Nativity scenes are part of the typical itinerary of the outings and routes through the city at this time
There are two sides: the traditional representations that for example can be seen in the City Hall of Madrid or the Museum of History of Madrid
and the more alternative versions are in light format in Plaza de España and floral crafts in the Casa de Mexico Foundation
El manantial de los sueños: El Origen de la Navidad is a Christmas festival hidden in a park in Madrid (specifically
in the Royal Botanical Garden Alfonso XIII) that opens its doors from November 28 until January 5 with a schedule of 16:00 to 22:00h
The Botanical Garden of the Complutense University will become a unique universe full of experiences throughout the Christmas season
Tickets for El manantial de los sueños are already available and the price ranges from 12 to 25 euros
Chocolatería San Ginés(Pasadizo de San Ginés
But if you want to try a modernized version and almost as traditional as the typical churrerías
