Spain has denied entry to a Maersk container ship arriving at the port of Algeciras over allegations it is carrying arms to Israel.  Spanish daily El Pais earlier this week said Madrid would not allow the vessel to dock because its cargo included weapons systems for Israel “The cargo to be transshipped through the port does not include any military weapons or ammunition,” Maersk said in a statement.  But Maersk appeared to confirm that some cargo was going to Israel It questioned if Spain had expanded its ban on the type of Israel-bound cargo it was blocking from arriving in Spanish ports.  “It is our understanding that Spain has in its discretion changed its criteria and is now rejecting vessels that carry anything military-related going to notwithstanding such cargo being legal," Maersk said.  Copyright © 2014 - 2025. Middle East Eye Only England and Wales jurisdiction apply in all legal matters Middle East Eye          ISSN 2634-2456                      Civilian ports are being used to support the genocide in Gaza Port workers in Casablanca have announced a boycott and actions in France caused delays while protesters across Spanish ports demand an end to complicity in Israeli war crimes Press TV’s website can also be accessed at the following alternate addresses: www.presstv.co.uk 1. The incident occurred near the southeastern coast of Algeciras. The HMM St. Petersburg had 24 crew members aboard, while the Gloria Maris carried 25. As reported, both ships remained stable after the collision, and no injuries or pollution have been reported. All crew members on both vessels were unharmed in the accident.  Furthermore, initial inspections showed that the vessels sustained damage to their side structures but posed no risk of spills or sinking. The Gloria Maris appeared to have noticeable damage to its bow. After the incident, the authorities at the port of Algeciras allowed the containership to dock, while the tanker was instructed to anchor nearby. Moreover, both vessels are currently detained by Spanish authorities near Algeciras, pending additional safety inspections before they are allowed to depart. “The Maritime Captaincy of Algeciras has ordered the retention of the two vessels and will carry out inspections by the safety inspectors,” Salvamento Maritimo wrote on X. The HMM St. Petersburg, was returning to Europe after a voyage to China. The Gloria Maris had recently unloaded crude oil in Cartagena, Spain, and was traveling in ballast condition. All rights reserved Partner in company due to receive shipment arrested after 13 tonnes of drug discovered at port of Algeciras Spanish police and customs officers have intercepted the largest known consignment of cocaine ever to reach the country, seizing more than 13 tonnes of the drug, hidden in a cargo of bananas shipped from Ecuador Spain’s Policía Nacional said the seizure was the second largest recorded in Europe and one of the largest anywhere in the world The force said the container – which had come from Guayaquil to the southern Spanish port of Algeciras – was intercepted when it arrived on 14 October because the Ecuadorian export company behind the shipment had been linked to “illicit trafficking” After noticing a discrepancy between the container’s stated cargo and its apparent contents police and customs officers began a thorough search “The container in question housed a screen of boxes that actually contained bananas which were used to hide the drugs,” the Policía Nacional said “Behind that screen was a large quantity of identical boxes that contained bricks of cocaine that had been packed to fit the boxes exactly.” a court in Algeciras authorised a search of four properties in Alicante and one in Madrid The searches yielded a large quantity of documentation leading to the arrest in Toledo of a partner in the company due to receive the shipment The seizure easily exceeds the previous record interception in Spain last year when police discovered 9.4 tonnes of cocaine Police said the size of October’s haul made plain the scale of the international distribution operation behind the shipment “It’s obvious that these 13 tonnes of cocaine were not only bound for the Spanish market,” António Jesús Martínez the head of the central narcotics brigade of the Policía Nacional “The Spanish market cannot handle so many drugs all at once These drugs were intended to be distributed throughout Europe.” Four years ago, Spanish police broke up an international gang that smuggled cocaine into Europe from Colombia by impregnating it into the cardboard used in boxes of pineapples and limes A year-long international operation led by officers from Spain’s national police resulted in 18 arrests in Spain ‘Risks are a reality in our industry identify what helps or hinders our daily work keep learning and adopt a culture that welcomes learning and continuous improvement,' said Zsanett Balla who made a special mention for APM Terminals Spanish Gateways who due to issues arising from last week's floods in Valencia were unable to celebrate Global Safety Day today in addition to very graphic experiments on the consequences of the impact of falling objects APM Terminals staff and contractors participated in workshops on the use of defibrillators The day also included an inspiring conference by Julio de la Iglesia Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician (TEDAX) who addressed fear as a motivational lever to lead at work The winners of the Safety Awards were the shift managers of Maintenance and Operations as the safest contractor; Discrepancies were found between the declared and actual cargo, which led to its opening on October 14. Authorities in Spain were alerted to the shipment by the Policia Nacional of Ecuador. The discovery has been called Spain’s biggest by the force, surpassing the 9.4 tonnes of cocaine found at Algeciras last year. It is the second biggest in European history and the largest shipment ever found in one container. Searches of properties in Alicante and Madrid were conducted as a result and a partner of the company receiving the shipment has been arrested in Toledo (near Madrid). In a strategic move to improve its India-North America service, Maersk’s MECL service will add a stop at Mundra, India, while simultaneously discontinuing its westbound call at the port of Algeciras in southern Spain. Morocco’s Tanger Med port will replace Algeciras as the new stopover point. According to a post on the carrier’s page, this adjustment will result in an average five-day improvement in transit times from India, Pakistan, and the Middle East to the United States East Coast. The new MECL rotation will operate as follows: Jebel Ali (United Arab Emirates), Mundra, Pipavav, Nhava Sheva (India), Salalah (Oman), Newark, Charleston, Savannah, Houston, Norfolk, Newark (United States), Tangier, and Salalah (Oman). The inaugural voyage on this new route will be made by the “Maersk Atlanta 509W,” scheduled to call at Mundra on February 24, 2025. It’s worth noting that Tanger Med port ranked fourth in the global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) for 2023. In this ranking, compiled by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, the Moroccan port facility outperformed all African and European ports for the second consecutive year. China’s Yangshan port leads the CPPI ranking, followed by Salalah (Oman) and Cartagena (Colombia), with Malaysia’s Tanjung Pelepas port completing the top five highest-performing ports. Star when the ship was crossing the English Channel but the tanker was badly damaged on its starboard side The impact of the collision damaged one of its cargo tanks from which paraffin flowed into the sea it quickly solidifies at ambient temperature so the harm to the marine environment is estimated to be minimal the Spanish environmental group Verdemar Ecologistas en Accion prompted the authorities to monitor the situation The tanker was helped by four tugboats and reached the Port of Algeciras where it was tied at a berth and is awaiting repairs. It will offload its remaining cargo to another tanker before going into the dry dock It will also be inspected for other damages there is no environmental risk from the ship although a boom has been deployed around it for safety purposes Bulker Louisa Bolten is on its way to Aliaga Port in Turkey Marine Insight News Network is a premier source for up-to-date, comprehensive, and insightful coverage of the maritime industry. container ships that traverse the world’s oceans are marvels of engineering and a vital component of maritime trade Container ships are classified into various categories based on their carrying capacity there are seven major types of container ships in service New Panamax (or Neo Panamax) and Ultra Large Container Vessel (ULCV) The advent of the 2000s saw the coming of Ultra-Large Container Vessels which can carry more than 10,000 TEUs and gradually container ships became bigger and better with MSC Irina presently holding the record for the biggest container ship in the world with 24,346 TEUs capacity the largest container ships boast much more than their size and capacity with enhanced safety and security systems which help streamline operations The story of container ships goes back to 1956 when Malcolm McLean created ripples in the cargo shipping industry by introducing the idea of containerships the race to build the most efficient ships has led to the production of the world’s largest container ships which are mentioned in this article The biggest container ships now rival crude oil tankers and bulk carriers as the largest commercial seaborne vessels We will examine the world’s largest container ships based on their capacity, which is measured in TEU (a Twenty-foot equivalent unit) MSC Irina has become the world’s biggest container ship It was put into service in 2023 and is sailing under the Liberian Flag It measures about 399.9 meters in length and boasts a moulded width of about 61.3 meters The largest container ship took her sea trials in February 2023 and was then sent to Zhejiang Zhoushan Shipyard for final work the behemoth sailed on her maiden voyage and docked at Nansha Port MSC Michel Cappellini has a capacity of 24,346 TEU and is one of the biggest container ships in the world It was built in 2023 by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in China a former MSC CEO who led the company to new heights Irina is the first among the six ships which would be constructed by the Chinese Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group These new vessels have unique design elements to decrease the consumption of fuel such as propellers with a large diameter and a system that generates air bubbles along the hull to reduce water resistance It is also fitted with hybrid scrubbers that would decrease carbon dioxide emissions by 3 to 4% got its 1st 24,188 TEU capacity container ship It was constructed by Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co This second biggest container ship has a total length of 399.9 m and a 61.3 m beam the Hong Kong Seaport Alliance that runs along the coast of southern Spain is written the date of 26 December 2024 will occupy a prominent place in the timeline This was the date promised a month ago by the Ministry of Transport's secretary-general for sustainable mobility after the first of the roundtable meetings on mobility between the Junta de Andalucía Malaga's Diputación provincial authority and the town halls along the Costa del Sol and beyond the Ministry of Transport put out to tender the preliminary feasibility study for a new rail corridor running from Nerja to Algeciras This is an historic step forward insofar as it addresses the possibility that the rail links will connect the entire Costa del Sol in the future: the Malaga part it is going to be done in a format that will have legal validity to ensure it moves forward as this is the first mandatory administrative step for any infrastructure work to be executed which is the object of the contract up for grabs will be that necessary to comply with the stipulations of article 5.3 of the Railway Sector Act," as specified in the contract offer to which SUR has had access and which has already been sent to the BOE (official state gazette) for publication the Transport ministry in Madrid plans to award the contract for 1.2 million euros (including IVA services tax) to an independent consultancy firm Despite the execution period being 18 months (active from the moment the contract is awarded and signed) Transport minister Óscar Puente announced last week that he intends to know in at least a year's time what the ideal proposal for the route will be (mejora de línea C1 actual) + nuevo corredor Fuente: Ministerio de Transportes y Movilidad Sostenible Estudio de viabilidad para el tren de la Costa del Sol Soluciones basadas en estudios anteriores The commissioned study will start with an in-depth analysis of the current Malaga-Fuengirola C1 commuter line The transport engineers looking at the feasibility of it all will have to evaluate all the possible options for improvement: from reinforcing the existing infrastructure to building a new line In the second phase the experts will be expected to study a possible extension to the west to reach Algeciras in Cadiz province and to the east as far as Nerja As such the feasibility study will be structured in five sections: Nerja-Malaga The ministry takes the current C1 line as the heart of the transport system on the Costa del Sol "It has an important demand as it connects Malaga city with Malaga Airport fourth in the country in terms of passenger traffic and with medium-sized towns located on the western Costa del Sol: Torremolinos Benalmádena and Fuengirola," says the tender document electrified and equipped with double track in part of its route "in which improvements and investments have been made in recent decades but which still has certain limitations and does not satisfactorily meet the mobility needs of the population so it is necessary to study options to improve the service," is the argument given in the document In addition to improving communications in this area the Ministry "is committed to bringing the benefits of rail transport to the rest of the people living on the Costa del Sol as currently the line does not serve densely populated municipalities west of Fuengirola such as Estepona or Marbella nor does it reach the eastern Costa del Sol." One of the key elements of the work to be done will be a study of the potential demand for each of the five sections "based on a model built specifically for this action" as well as an assessment of the financial and socio-economic profitability "The figures on socio-economic profitability will be used to help make decisions on the suitability of the project While the findings of this study must be fully considered in the future as this is the protocol that must be followed internal studies carried out by the Ministry's own transport specialists already point to a favourable result at least for the section of line between Malaga and Estepona SUR reported a short while back that there already is an initial proposal for the line that involves using the central reservation of the A-7 motorway wherever possible setting it a trench and thereby reducing costs there is a formula and we are going to develop it," confirmed Óscar Puente last week "When you start a study you can already see whether it is going to be favourable or not and I have a lot of confidence in the director-general of the railway sector at the ministry who is a very brilliant technical specialist and he already has in his head what the alternative could be." In the meantime a preliminary estimate has been calculated as to the potential demand for this railway line This was included in a report pulled together by José Alfonso Gálvez Salinas director-general of mobility strategies at the Transport ministry's office for sustainable mobility The report finds that a train service from Nerja to Algeciras would move around 60 million passengers per year although the stretch with the greatest potential - from Malaga city to Estepona - would add up to 46 million passenger journeys almost three times more than the current C1 railway line last year the latter reached its all-time record with 16 million users intercity service between Malaga's María Zambrano and Madrid's Atocha stations moves around four million a year Continuing this analysis with the help of the Transport ministry's big data tech resources and assuming the line runs a Cercanías stopping service some initial doubts are raised regarding the extension to the line going east to the Axarquía and west to the Campo de Gibraltar the estimated number of passengers is close to ten million a year Looking at the final stretch between Estepona and Algeciras demand is estimated to be much lower at 4.9 million passenger journeys the central part of the rail corridor - Malaga-Fuengirola and Fuengirola-Marbella-Estepona - is initially assessed as "recommendable" for the first leg and "potentially recommendable" for the second without the need for any support measures for the other two parts to be feasible this report warns that "important complementary measures" are necessary and the solutions would have to come from collaboration between the Junta and the respective municipal councils an extended coastal train line alone would not be the total solution For this reason the same document points out several other transport solutions One such solution could be improvements to the frequency of bus services on lines with high occupancy the creation of express services to areas of high business or industry activity (by means of buses) Another option is to provide more 'Bus-VAO' lanes (the Spanish for an exclusive traffic lane for buses and high-occupancy vehicles) and bicycle lanes Other ideas include updating the ticket concessions map for these services and the creation of park-and-ride facilities and transport interchanges Algeciras has again seen the largest cocaine haul in Spanish history with 13 tonnes seized by the Spanish police and Customs This has an estimated street value of around £780 million the drugs were hidden in a container of bananas which had come from Ecuador and was headed for an agricultural company in Alicante ABC reports that one person has been arrested Algeciras was also the site of the previous largest cocaine haul in Spain - with 9.5 tonnes seized last August Sitemap Website design by Piranha Designs Asset Maintenance expert at APM Terminals Algeciras explains how they brushed up on safety and reliability Road markings provide visual guidance to drivers helping them navigate safely through the terminal area and other important traffic management features reducing the risk of accidents and collisions.  I would say that the main trigger was that markings were seen as a repetitive contributing factor in several traffic collisions Insufficient marking was never the main root cause which brings us a lot of ideas and best practice learnings Managing Director of APM Terminals West Med He put the focus on safety issues that could be avoided using Lean methodology.  we have a long trajectory of success applying Lean methodologies to maintenance breakdowns or other safety topics so it was a natural step to reorient our efforts to specifically traffic collisions several manufacturers came to the terminal to understand our needs and later to check the follow-up of the tests It is not easy to find other examples in which heavy machinery is constantly driving eroding and dirtying the horizontal signalization Ports or airports are really exceptional cases in which this situation happens So it was a long process in which ten different paints were tested on different locations until we reached the current solution If we consider horizontal signalisation costs during one year that means paint cost plus repainting at the required frequency we can clearly confirm that we are now saving money Drivers understanding was our most relevant design criteria The following mandate was repeated in each of our design sessions: “anyone from any company any country…must understand the road markings”.  That was why we dedicated a lot of time to collect Voice of the Customer feedback gathering the input of many truck and rubber tyred gantry crane (RTG) drivers before validating any of the proposals we were considering we also did some benchmarking with other ports we designed a new marking layout that was also double checked with our HSSE & Operations teams.
