Rebeca Rodríguez saw that a place was available a few metres from Karmela Restaurant
where she was cooking under the guidance of Daniel Peregrina
made Rebeca a proposal to become partners and she accepted
Today she is in charge of the kitchen of this new business that was launched just five months ago under the name of Vendaval in Calle Málaga in Alhaurín de la Torre
"The idea was to set up a seafood restaurant
something informal and with a lot of emphasis on fried fish
because there are not so many places to eat it here
but little by little people have been asking us for the more innovative cuisine that we do at Karmela and we have been incorporating other dishes such as the prawn pil pil rolls." explains Daniel Peregrina about a constantly evolving menu and an affordable average price (around 15-20 euros)
gildas (a salty tapa) and fried fish such as lemon anchovies
scrambled eggs with pork cheeks and flambéed kimchi aioli
among other proposals with which they aim to offer something different to the town's gastronomic offer
This is how Rebeca Rodríguez sees it: "Many people knew us from Karmela and are used to the creative cuisine that is done there
while at the same time offering the essence of a seafood restaurant"
Although some very peculiar drawings also hang on the walls: the ones left on the paper tablecloths by the youngest members of the family
in addition to the dishes 'For the little ones' and the location in a pedestrian street
says Peregrina about a space that can seat around twenty diners
A team of four people are in charge of running this new venture
which aspires to establish itself as a casual alternative to Alhaurinos' lunch and dinner
And another date for wine lovers: Barbadillo wine tasting with four courses on 14 May at 9pm (26 euros)

Alhaurín de la Torre is giving away a large plot of land for absolutely free for a developer to build subsidised homes
The council has not been able to shift the 2,109.83-square-metre plot for some time and is lacking affordable
They have just relaunched a tender for the land in Torrealquería
after the initial February bidding round ended without takers
The site could easily hold about 40 subsidised homes (VPOs)
The winning developer would control the land for the next 75 years
free of municipal taxes tied to construction
VPOs (Viviendas de protección oficial) are properties that have their value controlled by legislation so that they cannot be speculated upon
and maintain an affordable price for lower income residents
first opened on February 4 with offers due by mid-March
according to the councillor in charge of leasing the land
‘It’s hard to get cheaper than free.’ Yet
a Malaga builders’ and developers’ spokesperson explained the hesitation: high investment costs and uncertain returns deter companies
backed by €50,000-per-home European grants

A 71-year-old British man has died after he was rescued from the floods in Spain

At least 95 people have died in eastern Spain after flash floods swept away cars, turned village streets into rivers and disrupted rail lines and major roads in the worst natural disaster to hit the nation in recent memory.
Emergency services in the eastern region of Valencia confirmed a death toll of 62 people on Wednesday.
The central government office for Castilla La Mancha region added that an 88-year-old woman was found dead in the city of Cuenca.
Rainstorms on Tuesday caused flooding in a wide swathe of southern and eastern Spain, stretching from Málaga to Valencia.
Floods of mud-coloured water tumbled vehicles down streets at high speeds, while pieces of wood swirled in the water with household items.

Equipo Kern Pharma attacked breakaway in the final kilometres to win in Alhaurín de la Torre
Alan Jousseaume takes second and Connor Swift third
The 23-year-old was one of six riders in contention for victory after the early break and was able to stay clear all day, with UAE Team Emirates-XRG content to defend the overall lead of Pavel Sivakov.
With just under two kilometres left to race
Uriarte launched a speculative early attack
but with the other riders looking at one another
he was able to cross the line first after just over four hours of racing to record a surprise win for his team
Alan Jousseaume (Team TotalEnergies) was second
and Connor Swift (Ineos Grenadiers) completed the podium in third
There was no change in the overall classification as the peloton rolled in over 4 minutes behind the winner
with Sivakov retaining the yellow leader’s jersey for the third day
Clement Berthet (Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale) second and Tom Pidcock (Q36.5 Pro Cycling) third
The longest stage of the race at 194.3 kilometres
and headed south back towards Spain’s south coast
A diminutive peloton of just 97 riders began the race
with a further 8 riders withdrawing from the race before the stage started
Sivakov spent his second day in the leader’s jersey
enjoying a 23-second lead over Berthet in second place on GC
with many teams keen to be involved in the day’s breakaway
a 14-rider lead group was finally established
and they began to build their gap over the peloton
It was a relatively modest advantage of no more than 2:30 for most of the race however
the Wagner Bazin WB team were driving the pace in the bunch
presumably in the hope of eventually making the catch
The day’s golden kilometre bonuses were divided amongst the breakaway riders with just over 70 kilometres remaining on the stage
too far from the stage finish to have any real impact on the overall classification
The gap to the front of the race dropped below two minutes for the first time with around 54 kilometres remaining
with the other team to have missed out on the break - the Mexican continental side Petrolike - adding their numbers to the chase
and allowing UAE to conserve their energy in defence of Sivakov’s lead
the gap began to extend again as they moved closer to the finish
extending some hope to the 12 remaining breakaway riders
but with UAE taking control at the front of the bunch
any hope left within the peloton of fighting for the stage win was extinguished as they put on the brakes
allowing the gap to swell and effectively neutralising the race from within the main bunch
with the message presumably getting through that the peloton had sat up
the attacking began with around 17 kilometres to go
Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale’s Callum Scotson was the most animated
only five were able to bridge across to Scotson: Uriarte
and the finish line in Alhaurín de la Torre
Uriarte launched an audacious attack with just under 2 kilometres remaining
and his gap began to grow as the group behind looked at each other
playing a dangerous game if they hoped to leave enough time for a counter-attack
It was too late for them all in the end – with the finish line coming into view
Uriarte checked over his shoulder and confirmed that he was about to realise an incredible achievement
He clutched his head in shock as he crossed the line to become a Spanish winner for a Spanish team at a Spanish race
taking his inaugural career victory in a real coup for his team
and with no late attacks from the main contenders
there was no change in the overall classification following the stage

is to install sirens in flood-prone areas to warn of potential flooding
The novel alert system with electronic sirens will be placed in the flood zone closest to the banks of the Guadalhorce River that was affected by the DANA floods at the end of October 2024
during an ordinary plenary session held in council chambers
and will be installed in the Santa Amalia neighbourhood where houses were flooded back in October
The project will serve to complement the measures already in place and framed within the Municipal Emergency Plan that is launched in the event of a weather alert
‘We have done our homework, which has served for the damage of these last two DANA to be much less than in other towns,’ said the mayor of Alhaurín de la Torre
He cited the development of a local flood plan that details the necessary measures to be put in place to prevent any more significant damage
The mayor added that he personally had fought a great deal to keep the sludge cleaned after the October floods, away from the urban areas as far as possible, given the unpleasant odours from the drainage systems that mixed in with the mud shifted by floodwaters.

The Mayor of Alhaurín de la Torre, Joaquín Villanova, has announced that the asphalting work to improve the surface of El Camino Fuente de Lentisco, between the junction with the Blas González stream and El Camino Moncayo, has been finished.
Furthermore, the mayor explained that around 900,000 euros has been allocated for similar works in other parts of the municipality. Specifically, improvements are planned for Pinos de Alhaurín and Taralpe, as well as the so-called Camino Tropical, on the boundary with the municipality of Cártama.
The mayor said that this type of work is "greatly appreciated", especially by people who live in rural areas, for whom it is essential to have roads in good condition to ensure road safety and mobility. "If these actions were not carried out, people would be driven away from living in the countryside," he said.
The Camino Fuente de Lentisco is an important road in the La Alquería area that connects to numerous estates and rural houses. The town hall apologised to the residents of this area for the inconvenience caused by the closure of the road during the work.
Registered office Málaga, Avda. Dr. Marañón, 48.
The procedure, started by Alhaurín de la Torre town hall to transfer, free of charge, the ownership of a plot of land valued at around 600,000 euros to be used for the construction of affordable rental housing, has so far been unsuccessful. The idea was to capture the interest of investors willing to build on the plot. However, no bids were received during the tender period, which has prompted the town hall to reopen the process under the same conditions.
As to the possible causes of the lack of bidders, the councillor believes that it may be due to the general context of rising construction costs. However, Perea has highlighted that the area is uncomplicated to build on, which has been demonstrated by the construction of another social housing complex there.
In contrast, Violeta Aragón, general secretary of the association of builders and developers of Malaga, has pointed to some of the complications that come with municipal promotions and offers. "One of the main problems is that you have to advance the investment, but then you depend on the collection of rent to recover it. Even if all the properties are rented, there might be issues with the payments," she said.
Aragón described what would attract a possible investor to give a chance to a plot of land: the guarantees for recovering the investment usually involve the opportunity to build a large number of homes, which will, in turn, make costs profitable, and a location that will ensure constant interest.
A success story is that of a 759-square-metre plot of land in Torre de Benagalbón in Rincón de la Victoria, where 20 homes at affordable rents will be built. With a contribution of one million euros from the Spanish government, the 1.8-million-euro value of the land did attract a company.
Malaga-born actress Mónica Cervera, 49, has been arrested by National Police officers in Marbella, following a judicial complaint. The 2005 Goya film awards nominee has apparently been living on the streets of the Costa del Sol town for some time.
The actress, known for her roles in Crimen Ferpecto (The Perfect Crime) and the series La Que Se Avecina, faces a pending charge from a criminal court in Malaga for her alleged responsibility in a crime against property.
After her arrest, she was handed over to the courts, which ordered she should be remanded in custody. Since then, the actress has been held in the women's wing of the Alhaurín de la Torre prison.

Mayor of Alhaurín de la Torre Joaquín Villanova has confirmed the arrival of a Decathlon sports store in the Guadalhorce valley municipality
The efforts to facilitate the establishment of this outlet have now come to fruition
after municipal sources confirmed that the retail space will be located in the Santa Clara neighbourhood
The store will occupy a plot of land in the vicinity of the future Carrefour
which has also been confirmed in this area
at the eastern end of the urban expansion and where there is still the possibility of more growth
the town hall has also announced the construction of a new sports complex
facilities that will be dedicated to the Unicaja basketball player
and with a planned investment of four million euros
The confirmation of Decathlon comes at a time when the construction of the new Mercadona supermarket is well advanced in the area surrounding the industrial estate
and shortly after the opening of a Burger King
also in the vicinity of industrial zone next to the A-404
the main route connecting the town with the A-7 motorway
the construction of the future commercial centre located in the western area of Alhaurín de la Torre got under way at the end of October
received the approval for this 3.6-million-euro project
The announcements of projects for the eastern area of Alhaurín de la Torre are taking shape at a time when a new connection between the municipality and the A-7 motorway is also under way
It consists of the transformation of an old disused road into a larger capacity artery that links with the municipal bypass and will provide an alternative exit by motorway towards Malaga and Torremolinos
have been used to recreate a nativity scene in the Vicente Aleixandre cultural centre in Alhaurín de la Torre in Malaga province's Guadalhorce valley.
A display of the Three Wise Men are a highlight of the nativity scene
such as the great flood and the arrival of the animals on Noah's Ark
Pepi Somodevilla and the Rivas Art Workshop produced the impressive nativity set
"Every detail has been carefully worked out and everything I treasure in my house is exhibited so that it can be enjoyed by everyone," Somodevilla said
Students of the Rivas art workshop participated in the construction and design of the exhibition with 90 scenes on display
The exhibition can be visited until 7 January in the cultural centre
"You have to be proud of this exhibition because it represents the enormous work and effort that goes into putting together a nativity scene like this," mayor Joaquín Villanova told Pepi Somodevilla
He also congratulated the owner of the Taller de Arte Rivas workshop "for the good teaching and positive messages that she brings to these children"
Malaga's commercial offer is about to increase significantly as the province is set to gain six large retail parks within the next three years
which will increase the current offer by more than 80,000 square metres
The new retail parks will be spread throughout the province
The most important of these in terms of size will be the one to be developed on the Salyt site in the city
although new areas will also be built in El Mayorazgo
According to data provided by the Spanish association of shopping centres and retail parks (Asociación Española de Centros y Parques Comerciales - AECC)
all of them should open their doors before 2027
Estepona is the only one that has already been completed and has just opened its doors; Alhaurín de la Torre will open at the end of 2025; Salyt and Cártama will open in 2026
the one being developed by Ediffisa on the land where the old Salyt brick factory used to be
of which 21,000 will be a commercial area; the one in Alhaurín de la Torre will have 5,400
the one in Nerja 4,800; the one in El Mayorazgo 4,600 and the one in Cártama some 4,000
Estepona Park has a surface area of 5,288 square metres
explained that the future retail park to be located next to Avenida de Valle Inclán should open its doors between the second and fourth quarter of 2026
The driving force behind it will be a company specialising in DIY and it will also have restaurants
"We want it to be a very complete and useful park for the residents of the area," he added
The one in Alhaurín de la Torre will be the first to open
If all deadlines are met it will open in September 2025
it will be located on Avenida Finca Taralpe and will have four commercial premises
The other three retail parks under development are being undertaken by the company Suba
The one in Cártama will be located in the El Cerro industrial estate and is the second phase of the one built in 2023 (Burger King was the first operator)
The developer has announced that it will have three new companies that will share 4,000 square metres divided into two floors and 50 new parking spaces
This will have a surface area of approximately 4,600 square metres and 140 parking spaces
It will have a supermarket as the main operator as well as pet and body care shops and restaurants
It is expected to open its doors in spring 2027
The one in Nerja is in the urban planning process
It will have 4,800 square metres and 70 parking spaces
The opening is scheduled for the autumn 2027
The one that has just opened its doors is called Estepona Park and has been developed by Batex & Duplex
The first phase of the project has four stores of well-known international brands including Kiwoko
an outlet of the Primaprix chain and the Veritas health food supermarket
Its opening has involved an investment of 15 million euros and has created around 100 jobs
The AECC points out that this model is growing very fast since the reopening of all retail outlets after the Covid pandemic
Among its advantages are that they are open spaces with plenty of outdoor parking and large service-based businesses such as supermarkets
said that they are generally small projects
are easier to develop and are easily adapted to local markets
"It is a format that in Spain has had somewhat less development than in the rest of Europe"
Pavel Sivakov took centre stage on the podium in La Línea de la Concepción on Sunday afternoon after claiming victory in the 2025 Vuelta a Andalucía for UAE Team Emirates
who switched his sporting allegiance from Russia to France in 2022
secured the yellow jersey after dominating the general classification for four of the five stages
overtaking Maxim Van Gils of Red Bull-BORA
and maintained his lead until the race concluded with the final stage from Benahavís to the Gibraltar boarder town
The final podium was completed by Clément Berthet (Decathlon-AG2R) and Tom Pidcock (Q36.5)
remained in contention but was unable to challenge UAE Team Emirates
who demonstrated their dominance throughout the event
was the highest-placed domestic rider while José Manuel Díaz Gallego (Burgos BH) finished as the best Andalusian competitor
the final two stages saw Spanish victories
Diego Uriarte (Kern Pharma) triumphed in Alhaurín de la Torre on Saturday before Jon Barrenetxea (Movistar) won the last stage
Barrenetxea's win helped Movistar salvage some success after a disappointing performance from their leaders
Quintana withdrew before the fourth stage while Mas struggled to make an impact
Malaga province played a key role in the race
The opening stage was confined to the Axarquía region (Torrox-Cueva de Nerja) while the fourth travelled from Cordoba to Alhaurín de la Torre via the Guadalhorce valley
and included two mountain climbs—Puerto del Madroño and Puerto del Espino—before a sprint finish
This year's edition marked the centenary of the Vuelta a Andalucía
returning with full stages after a turbulent 2024 event that was reduced to a single time trial due to a farmers' strike
without sufficient Guardia Civil personnel to ensure security
they salvaged the race with a time trial in Alcaudete (Jaén)
but the 2025 edition restored the full five-day format
Alhaurin de la Torre's four municipal open-air swimming pools opened on 1 July with price increases
and these increases have sparked controversy
The entrance fee from Monday to Friday has gone from being "practically symbolic" to cost two euros for members of the facility and eight euros for those who are not: on Saturdays
while the season ticket costs 40 euros for members and 70 for non-members
The town hall justifies this decision by the need to comply with a Spanish Supreme Court ruling
following a complaint from a resident of a municipality near Bergara
who complained that he had to pay a surcharge of 30 per cent for using the swimming pool
the court ruled that this discrimination was illegal
and so Alhaurín de la Torre introduced the figure for members of the municipal sports facilities
the prices for the use of these services were updated
together with dissatisfaction about increased insecurity and incivility
to the fact that the lifeguard is responsible for charging entrance fees and for issues such as the fact that only card payments can be made
The municipal opposition also rejects the new developments en bloc
which considers the reasons for the price hikes to be far-fetched
laments the fact that the higher cost of the pools comes along with a general increase in municipal fees
Con Andalucía draws attention to the fact that the measure goes "directly against the poorest people
"A family of four people either spends 80 euros to get the card
or pays 20 euros to go on Saturday or Sunday"
it is going to the plenary session with a motion that urges the municipal government to re-establish prices and
if it is difficult to modify the new ordinance that regulates them
They also call for greater vigilance in these areas
including the creation of an access pass as an alternative option to the sports department's membership card
starting next season; this will involve a modification of the town's by-laws
He also stated that a reduction in prices and the creation of a regulation of use and a security service will be studied
The project to build a zip line on the El Calamorro mountain in Benalmádena is progressing favourably
It is an initiative that involves a difficult bureaucratic process
as the activity itself will run entirely on land classified as undevelopable and of special protection
Mount Calamorro is a public mountain owned by Benalmádena town hall and managed by the regional ministry of agriculture
This means that the company interested in the project (Acciones Extremas S.L.)
must carry out the corresponding procedures before the council and the regional government grant authorisation for easement - a key step before obtaining the municipal licence
The first steps for the project began at the town hall in 2021
according to the municipal technical and legal reports consulted by SUR
a full council meeting held earlier this week approved the authorisation prior to the municipal licence
The ball is now in the hands of the Junta de Andalucía
which must analyse the environmental impact of the activity and determine its viability
Although little is yet known about the project
as Izquierda Unida spokesman Enrique Pablo Centella explained
the company is the same one that manages the twin zip line in Alhaurín de la Torre
with a capacity for 600 people and a speed of up to 100 kilometres per hour
The town hall's authorisation went ahead in the session with the favourable vote of the PP
the abstention of PSOE and Vox and the vote against of Izquierda Unida
and we oppose this project because we don't understand the need to lift the protection of our mountain range for something like this
Benalmádena already has enough tourist attractions and this is demonstrated by the record occupancy figures we have year after year," Centella said
The councillor for urban planning and tourism
said that this project has been under analysis for a long time
"First it was proposed to pass over the motorway and it was denied
but now it is being done in a different way
It remains to be seen whether it gets the environmental authorisation from the Junta de Andalucía: if the report is unfavourable
we believe it can be another tourist attraction
provided it has all the guarantees and protection," she explained
the top of El Calamorro can be reached by cable car
This structure takes users from the centre of Arroyo de la Miel to the top of the mountain
A journey of about three kilometres that takes approximately 15 minutes

The musicians revelled in the opportunity to participate in the experience which
has brought together musicians from all over Europe and the world as part of the park's Disney performance programme
Alhaurín de la Torre municipal band was selected after sending recordings with the pieces they planned to play to the park

congratulated the group on the experience and "taking the name of Alhaurín de la Torre to the highest level"
Some 40,000 people pass through Disneyland Paris every day
As part of its recycling and waste disposal initiatives
Alhaurín de la Torre town hall has announced it will install a total of 66 containers in different areas of the town
35 of which will be for clothing and footwear
which has an estimated budget of 28,184 euros
was put out to tender in May and has now been awarded to Eagle Textil SL (used clothing
footwear and other textile waste) and Fundación Madre Coraje (oil)
The idea of the council is to improve the distribution of these containers to meet the objectives of the national integrated waste plan
which urges municipalities to promote selective waste collection
specifies that the containers must be made of galvanised metal
hermetically sealed and with a security system when opening to prevent vandalism

The Galgos en Familia dog shelter Alhaurín de la Torre
an association which is dedicated to the protection of the dogs it is named after
and also of ‘podencos’ (hunting hounds) and mastiffs
has announced that it is desperately in need of new premises after the recent rains have left the current shelter unusable
said "we are no longer going to continue here" because the latest flooding of the Guadalhorce river left a mountain of mud in its wake
because the shelter had been recently repaired
improvements had been made after investing around 40,000 euros
when they first experienced an episode of this type
she is now appealing for help: "We need another premises that is not prone to flooding
It is also important for the shelter to be in Alhaurín de la Torre or the surrounding area
because "the bulk of the volunteers live here"
and these animals are currently being looked after in the homes of the association's collaborators
"We can't allow it to happen like last time
if it wasn't for all the volunteers and the emergency services who helped out
there could have been a disaster," Brunton said
along with professionals from the rescue service
"The water was a metre and a half high," she explained
they had to climb to higher levels with the dogs that were in the shelter
"We are going to try to save as much as we can so we can open the new shelter as soon as possible," Brunton said
"We hope to have a much better place as soon as possible
so that our dogs can enjoy the life they deserve
in the middle of what used to be a courtyard
The force of the water washed away everything
from a sofa to the fencing of many of the areas of the enclosure
I'm sure we'll find a better place and that we'll have help to do it," Brunton said
The problem they now face in order for the shelter to reopen is
The German supermarket chain Lidl continues to increase its presence in Malaga in 2025 with a plan to open three new supermarkets in the province: on Avenida de Velázquez in Malaga city
in Marbella and in the Taralpe area in Alhaurín de la Torre
Locals and tourists will have access to these new establishments sometime in the second half of the year and the number of employees is yet to be announced
Andalucía will get another four: two in Seville (in Higuerón Sur and Morón de la Frontera)
one in Granada (in Nigüelas-Dúrcal) and one in Cordoba (on Avenida de la Arruzafa)
Lidl has been present in the region since 1994 and it hasn't stopped expanding since then
with around 30 supermarkets in Malaga province and more than 900 workers
The total number of shops in the Andalucía region is 140
plus three strategic logistics platforms in Dos Hermanas (Seville)
Lidl's current raft of employees in Andalucía consists of more than 3,500 direct employees
32,000 indirect employees and more than 4,500 inducted employees
Lidl has proved to be a real boost to the regional economy and one of the main operators in the industry
The chain generates more than 1.8 million euros per year (1.06% of the regional total) for Andalucía's GDP
it exports 12% of the total volume of agri-food product exports of Andalucía as a whole (equivalent to nearly 14 million euros)
The Las Canteras de Churriana hunting reserve has asked the Malaga city council to be allowed to reopen
citing the uncontrollable growth of the wild boar population and the danger this poses to urban areas and roads as the reason behind the request
rural guard (also representative at Andalusian level for FTSP-USO) and environmental technician
has highlighted the issue: "Before it was closed
more than 500 wild boar were killed every year
Residents were delighted and the food could be donated to soup kitchens
The city council can be held responsible [for the current situation]
for not allowing us to carry out our activity."
Las Canteras de Churriana is situated between the municipalities of Alhaurín El Grande and the mountains to the north of the motorway
up to the roundabout at the Torremolinos conference centre
It has the required number of hectares (250 hectares) of public and private land
With nobody to control the increase and spread
invading the road that connects Churriana and Alhaurín de la Torre
He also complained of the decreasing number of members of the reserve
maintain ponds of up to 500 litres - everything to try to contain them here
but we can't put up with this situation," stated Villalobos
the forest ranger stated that the lack of hunting activity has meant that the land has had to be constantly cleared of debris
He even intervened in the occasional outbreak of fire
the problem would be greatly reduced," he said
Villalobos questions the ideas of using archers and even narcotic darts
"That meat can no longer be consumed and is also a waste," he said
What he considers favourable is regulated and controlled hunting
"Hunters are key players in environmental management and in the fight against the wild boar plague
as their work helps to prevent traffic accidents caused by these animals
their work in controlling the wild boar population helps to maintain an ecological balance in the countryside
protect biodiversity and safeguard the safety of people and domestic animals," said Villalobos
Villalobos said that what is being requested is the area of the "sierra
believing that it is unlikely that there would be any urban development there
He also stated that the land has been granted for fifty years and that "there has never been any problem with anyone"
Alhaurín de la Torre town hall in Spain's Malaga province has launched a plan to use bats to combat the plague of the processionary caterpillars
which has already forced the town hall to take measures such as intensive fumigation and closure of parks
The strategy consists of encouraging the presence of the flying mammals - the moths' natural predators
This is expected to control the reproduction of the processionary at its moth stage of development
the environment department will install 15 nesting boxes in different green areas to serve as shelters for the bats: Pinar de Taralpe (3)
Calle Río Manilva (2) and Calle Río Darro (2)
The nesting boxes were created at a children's workshop during last year's Easter holidays
The first location to test the strategy is close to the primary school
the results of which will be known next spring
favouring processes that don't involve spraying of toxic products to limit the spread
spraying is still the currently used method in other parts of the municipality
The aim is to prevent the spread of this dangerous caterpillar during heat waves
The benefits of bats are already being promoted by the Murciélagos Málaga company
The enterprise raises awareness with talks and an immersive video game in educational centres
A man has died and a young girl has been injured after a collision between a motorbike and a car in Alhaurín de la Torre in Malaga province
according to the 112 Andalucía emergency service coordination centre
The accident happened just before one o'clock on Saturday afternoon
members of the Local Police and the Guardia Civil were also on the scene
Police sources reported that the motorbike was carrying a father and his daughter
Local Police officers unsuccessfully performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation manoeuvres on the father
who also confirmed that the minor was injured
Fed up residents of Pinos de Alhaurín are demanding action as they claim noise from the nearby Club de Tiro Jarapalo shooting club has become excessive
which started in 2021 between a group of local residents and the shooting club
The residents are not seeking the closure of the facilities
but they are seeking the closure of shooting range number one
They claim the loud noise affects them directly and is unbearable and detrimental to the health of some people
only to receive the response that Alhaurín de la Torre council was not the responsible authority in the matter
it was pointed out that town hall does not have sufficient means to carry out control of the site and that surveillance of the shooting ranges falls under the responsibility of the Junta de Andalucía
there is a written commitment by the municipality to pass on the neighbourhood complaints to the competent authority
town hall had already received around a dozen complaints from these residents
continued to push and eventually got an appointment with the mayor
Their demands were heard face-to-face and presented the council with two measures they claimed would restore calm to their neighbourhood
They first demanded the shooting range number one
closest to the residential development at just 150 metres away from houses
it is not possible to successfully soundproof this part of the site
They also requested the noise levels coming from the other four shooting ranges be reduced
In addition to provisions of the Junta de Andalucía and other regulations
their claims are based on an approved study carried out on 23 and 24 March this year and paid for by the residents
with an average of 85 decibels and peaks of 110
This noise is practically double the recommended level
as it should not exceed 55 in a residential urban area
As they said during the meeting with town hall
this is what is stated in Alhaurín de la Torre's own regulations
and is therefore up to the council to ensure compliance
Mayor Joaquín Villanova said noise measurements carried out revealed the permitted decibel level was breached and ordered the Real Sociedad de Tiro de Pichón de Malaga
to solve the issue with a soundproofing plan
including the closure of shooting range number one
SUR has attempted to contact the Real Sociedad de Tiro de Pichón de Málaga
The Club de Tiro Jarapalo shooting club is located at kilometre 17 of the Coín road
The environmental protection service of the Junta de Andalucía
ruled in favour of "the suspension or closure of activities" at the Jarapalo shooting club in Alhaurín de la Torre "as a provisional measure"
The decision was a relief for residents of nearby homes
who had grown weary of the noise from the shooting
two months after this move - which seemed to address a string of complaints about the disturbances caused by the facility - the premises remain open
much to the frustration of those living close by
the situation is getting even worse," claimed the platform that brings together residents of the area around the club
now officially constituted as an association that has 400 members
The platform said that there was a temporary closure of range 1
when those responsible for the enclosure implemented corrective measures
makes the sound of gunfire echo even more due to the construction of booths
there have been six unfavourable reports against the interests of the club - two from the platform and as many from the town hall and the regional government
according to the experts they have consulted
indicate that the facility’s activity is "completely incompatible" with a residential area
They claim that "soundproofing is unfeasible" since the shooting must take place outdoors
There is one more key factor for the neighbourhood group: the acoustic assessments carried out on 25 and 26 January
commissioned by both the platform and the municipal authority
were conducted while the track closest to the houses was not in use
with peaks of 90 and 100," the group claimed
"Our platform wants to take legal action against the administration if it does not find an immediate solution to the problem
since it is more than demonstrated that the regulations are not being complied with." With this move
they are directly targeting the Junta de Andalucía
Nor are they happy about the situation at the shooting club
questions the results of the acoustic study
"in our opinion it has serious deficiencies
"We are going to defend the club and our permanent and many temporary employees
Some of those who have signed [against the venue's activity] will answer before the courts," he declared
Moreno points out that the closure of the shooting range would have direct consequences on the three permanent employees and the twenty or so who are called up for shooting days
the five shooting ranges are only open for 25 days at a time
which calls into question the inconvenience described
After the announcement of the measures in January
sources from the Andalusian government said that new shooting sessions were allowed on the second and third weekends of February to assess whether the soundproofing works were effective
to consult the regional government on Wednesday (2 April)
regarding the ongoing process concerning the operation of the Jarapalo shooting club
have arrested two burglars for carrying out a robbery in a property in Alhaurín de la Torre in Malaga province's Guadalhorce valley
during which they gagged and tied the hands and feet of the victims
The investigation began when the officers responded to a tip-off about a burglary that was being committed inside a house
having been alerted by neighbours who heard cries for help from the residents of the property
The Guardia Civil immediately went to the house
observing the assailants fleeing the area at high speed without being able to intercept them
gloves and balaclavas to conceal their identity
who had numerous injuries and who were bound hand and foot
and they told them that they had been assaulted and threatened with firearms
and that numerous valuables and cash had been taken from the house
After efforts were made to identify the perpetrators
and two people were arrested for the crime of robbery with violence
The detainees were handed over to the courts in Granada
who ordered the two to be remanded in custody
Alhaurín de la Torre is playing host to a weekend of vintage cars and motorbikes as well as a retro market September 6 to 8
The Malaga province town on the outskirts of Malaga City is about to hold one of its most popular events of the year
the ‘Concentration de Clásicos’ and Motor Festival at the Parque Municipal
A hundred vintage cars and motorcycles are expected to depend on the Guardalhorce Valley along with 4x4s and rally cars
There will also be food and wine market stalls with free tastings
As part of the town’s ‘Verbena Popular’, this 13th year of the classic cars meet traditionally marks the closing of the summer season for Alhaurín de la Torre
The council have been promoting the event highlighting the number of things to see and do between Friday
Mario Pérez of the Alhaurín de la Torre council said at a press conference ‘We want to make this a memorable event and a great party for the people of Alhaurin and also for visitors from the Costa del Sol with an attractive and varied programme.’
The ‘Verbena’ and Classic Cars Meet will be on from Friday, September 6 until Sunday 8 at the Parque Municipal de Alhaurín de la Torre
The Junta de Andalucía regional government's Minister of the Presidency Antonio Sanz made an unscheduled appearance at around eleven o'clock at night
to give information on the latest decisions taken by the authorities to warn people of the possible problems ahead of the new Dana weather system threatening Malaga
The red alert in which much of the province finds itself as of 10am this Wednesday morning justified the unusual action
At the headquarters of 112 Andalucía in Malaga
he took the floor to raise awareness of the urgency for people to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travel
"The situation for the province of Malaga is one of extreme risk," said Sanz
some 3,000 people living in high-risk areas along the banks of the Guadalhorce river were evacuated from their homes
This task was apparently carried out with the collaboration of the corresponding town halls
They are mainly concentrated in the municipalities of Cártama and Álora
although some were also affected in Pizarra
"The important thing is that we are acting in advance and in a preventive manner
Many of those evacuated were reported to have found shelter with family and friends
the municipalities have provided places for people to spend the night in case they are needed
who insisted several times on "extreme caution and avoiding journeys that are not essential"
also confirmed the suspension of classes in schools and colleges throughout the province for today
The minister also pointed out that the measures adopted have been based at all times on the reports that "have reached us throughout the day"
Not only the Aemet forecast from Spain's state weather agency
the Junta also has received information from experts in the field
Sanz also asked the population to "follow the official information" and called on them to avoid falling for hoaxes and information distributed on social media networks from unidentified sources
Asked about recommendations for those who have to go to work today and whether it would be advisable to stay at home in these cases
Sanz again insisted on highlighting the risk situation
It is up to others to take these decisions
The alert we have issued affects the population as a whole," he concluded
Residents in Alhaurín de la Torre in Malaga province's Guadalhorce valley are on high state of alert following a spate of burglaries in the El Romeral neighbourhood
SUR can confirm thieves have broken into nine houses in the Huertas del Romeral residential estate in the past two weeks
as well as four other properties in Lagar de las Pitas
are committing the burglaries at night and gaining access to homes by breaking fences and discovering open windows
they jump fences going from one house to the next
at least four houses in Lagar de las Pitas were broken into where Alba* (fictitious name to protect identity) was one of the victims
"We raised the alarm at around 11pm," said the resident
who reported the incident to Guardia Civil the next day where she met residents of three other properties
"They broke into two other houses and tried to break into another one
but there was a woman with her child and she started screaming
which seems to have scared them off," Alba said
Security cameras at Alba's property captured how two hooded men entered the house wearing gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints
Residents in this part of the neighbourhood have now created a WhatsApp group to keep each other informed
in the case of the Huertas del Romeral housing estate
the first burglaries took place overnight on 12 September and 13 September
"There wasn't a single drawer left that they didn't throw on the floor
they went with the intention of plundering," he said
The resident pointed out that this is his second home
so he did not keep any valuable belongings in the house
He found out about the robbery the next day
"That night they went through three houses," Mario said
you don't know how you're going to find the house," he added
the burglary took less time than the length of a dinner party
He and his wife had gone out to a restaurant with some friends and when they returned
it looked like a hurricane had hit," he said
When he was about to enter his property that night
he realised something was wrong as the gate would not open with the remote control
"I got out of the car and saw that the gate had been smashed," he said
a Guardia Civil patrol passing through the area checked the entrance before inspecting the property
which they found with the gate open and the lights on
"What we saw when we entered was saddening
all the drawers were open and everything was thrown on the floor," Juan said
is that the thieves got away with several family heirlooms
The heirlooms included a watch that belonged to his grandfather and chains that belonged to his aunts
The thieves also found money that his wife had saved in the hope of buying a sewing machine
said the robberies are causing residents to feel worried
Police sources said an investigation has been launched following the spate of incidents
several complaints have been received in recent days
Residents are requesting meetings with Alhaurín de la Torre town hall to demand more police presence in the Romeral area
as well as to improve the lighting in the neighbourhood
* All victims' names are fictitious in order to protect their identities
After two consecutive 'Dana' weather events that caused flooding in the province
an episode of steady rain - known locally in Malaga as ‘calaera’ - was a welcome relief
This type of rain falls intensely for hours without causing damage
It replenishes the aquifers and would have been perfect for bolstering reservoir supplies
here’s the bad news: as correctly predicted by Spain's state weather agency Aemet
the heaviest rainfall was concentrated along the coastal strip and out at sea
barely reaching the areas where the main reservoirs in the province are located - those of the Guadalhorce system and La Viñuela in the Axarquía
the reservoir closest to the coastal strip near Marbella
the rainfall recorded until the late hours of Thursday afternoon was significant
The storm remained static or moved slowly in the lower Guadalhorce area and the areas closest to Malaga city
55 mm were recorded in Rincón de la Victoria; 53 in La Cala del Moral; 51mm at Malaga Airport; 50 in Torremolinos and the same amount in Alhaurín de la Torre
according to the data from Aemet rain gauges
and the meteorology enthusiast networks Meteoclimatic and Wunderground
the author of the SUR blog Tormentas y Rayos (storms and lightning)
the Junta de Andalucía's Hidrosur network provided the following data: 45.5mm in La Araña; 38 in the Paseo de la Farola in Malaga city (where its headquarters are located); 29 in Santón Pitar (Los Montes de Málaga) and the same figure at the Guadalhorce river as it passes through Cártama
this is the river which has experienced the greatest increase
with a flow of 14.41 cubic metres per second
This is ten times the flow that the city needs for its daily water supply
The day's weather was rounded off with heavy snowfall in the Sierra de las Nieves and several lightning strikes along the coastal strip
which has been concentrated in the lower levels
the only reservoir that is benefiting slightly has been La Concepción
which is the one closest to the sea and which supplies the western Costa del Sol
the water collected by the triple transfer from the diversion dams that supply it from the Guadaiza
Guadalmina and Guadalmansa rivers has been decisive
Only La Viñuela reservoir in the Axarquía has received some slight runoff
while those of the Guadalhorce system (situated at a much higher latitude than the discharge point) have not noticed any improvement
and have even lost reserves due to the consumption of the last few hours
it was not intense and therefore did not cause flooding
the eastbound section of the Paseo de los Curas had to be cut off due to large pools of water
at Malaga Airport there were some delays in operations during the morning
due to the presence of powerful storm nuclei at the seaward end of the two runways
the authorities called for caution for those planning to visit the area to see the snow
The white blanket of snow is at very high altitudes
and it is mandatory to proceed on foot from the parking area
Alhaurín de la Torre town hall in Malaga province is ramping up preventative measures following the detection of the Nile virus in samples of mosquitoes around the Guadalhorce river
The council is now implementing a plan to intensify measures against the proliferation of mosquitoes
The town hall pointed out that according to the data obtained with its surveillance systems and controls carried out
the classification of the risk area is a level four
as the trap where the samples were collected was located within a 1.5-kilometre-radius
New fumigation works have now been announced in the area around the Guadalhorce river
in addition to preventive cleaning of irrigation channels in the area
The council offered advice on how residents can prevent the spread of mosquitoes such as avoiding leaving out containers that accumulate stagnant water (where the female mosquito lays her eggs and the larvae breed)
maintaining adequate levels of chlorine in swimming pools and ponds
protecting wells and water deposits with mosquito nets
renewing water in animal drinking troughs daily
and pouring water down drains at least once a week
The first ever plans for the Malaga Norte wastewater treatment plant date back 18 years
Andalucía's regional government (Junta) has tried to speed up the process to get this important facility up and running
The contract for the project had already been granted
but it has suffered various setbacks due to some head-on opposition
among other environmental and neighbouring protest groups
coming from the landowners in Vega de Mestanza
a citrus fruit-growing area between Alhaurín de la Torre and Malaga city
but have recently been received on two occasions for talks with Junta president Juanma Moreno and regional minister of agriculture Ramón Fernández Pacheco
who are both determined to put an end to this saga
The ministry's office points to the lack of action at the municipal level over many years
leading the Junta to take up the reins to resolve any actions pending at the time
all those missed deadlines and non-compliance have turned into fines
Since 2018 the Junta has had to pay up to 7.5 million euros in penalties (at a rate of 630,000 euros half-yearly in round terms)
other earlier fines have been avoided thanks to some of the infrastructure actually being built
The first infringement that incurred in the province pinpointed four areas where wastewater was being dumped (Coín
Estepona - now fixed - and Alhaurín el Grande)
Those cases clocked up fines of more than 12.3 million euros
As such this long history of fines exceeds 20 million euros
The amount in fines will increase until the part relating to Alhaurín el Grande's treatment plant is in operation
it too has an ongoing dossier of violations that could result in more sanctions and more public money being spent to cover them
The Norte plant will treat wastewater from Alhaurín de la Torre
Cártama and the new areas of development around Malaga city
This future facility should not be confused with the large Guadalhorce treatment plant in the city
which also treats wastewater from Torremolinos
Nor should it be mistaken for the Bajo Guadalhorce treatment plant
The first - Guadalhorce - is managed by Emasa (the municipal water company for Malaga) and invoices third parties for the service provided
The second is managed by the provincial water consortium of the Diputación (provincial authority for Malaga)
the future Norte plant will also be managed by Emasa
Exactly what the legal set-up will look like remains to be seen
given that this Malaga-based public company already has a lot of responsibility for
everything to do with supplying water to the growing metropolitan area that is Malaga (supply
Directive 91/271/EEC lays down the necessary measures to be taken by EU member states to ensure that urban wastewater is adequately treated before being discharged into other water sources and sets maximum deadlines for the implementation and enforcement of such treatments
the Junta agreed to provide technical and financial assistance to local councils and the like
declaring such essential projects to be of general interest to the people of Andalucía
Since 2015 the aforementioned Directive 91/271 and Directive 2000/60 (the latter provides a framework for the protection of a member state's waters from such as pollution) have not been complied with in these localities
"Since the change of government in the Junta de Andalucía in 2019
water policies have been a priority in Andalucía
One of the main objectives of the [regional] government
which was considered in the Andalusian pact for water signed in 2020
has been to speed up all actions related to sanitation and purification that have been pending since 2010
in spite of the Junta charging users a fee for these infrastructure improvements," said ministry sources
Among these pending actions was the project to build the Norte plant and associated collection and discharge points
The basic project was contracted by the Junta in 2006
In that year work also began on the sewer network needed to transport the wastewater from the municipalities to the treatment plant
Completion of this project would achieve two objectives: compliance with environmental objectives and an increase in the resources available in the Guadalhorce valley through the reuse of treated wastewater
The importance of this alternative resource goes without saying
has begun to receive reclaimed water for irrigation use from the Peñón del Cuervo plant in Malaga
Also a project is under way to extend tertiary treatment at the Guadalhorce plant to provide 15 hm3 per year of recycled water for agriculture and golf
Regarding the controversy raised by the location of the Norte plant in Vega de Mestanza
sources suggest that the location of the treatment plant has never been modified since 2006
It is the alternative that was considered in the POTAUM (the overall planning and urban development management tool used for Malaga city and surrounding metropolitan areas)
approved by the Junta de Andalucía in 2009
and then approved by Malaga city council in 2011 as part of its PGOU (the city plan): "This construction project has been approved by the planning experts in the Junta and has received a favourable report from the planning department (Urbanismo) for Malaga city
it also has environmental authorisation from all concerned and all the necessary permits to start the work."
During the consultation process to secure a fully agreed environmental authorisation
the treatment plant and its associated installations (pumping stations
electricity...) have been subjected to two new public information processes
"All the technical experts who have participated in this long process concluded that Vega Mestanza is the best solution," said the ministry
an Aquambiente-Dinotec-Sando joint venture costing 104 million euros including VAT
was awarded the contract in 2021 with a completion period of 36 months
The idea is to carry out the work in phases using multiple teams of workers in order to dispense sooner with the unauthorised discharges of untreated sewage that cost so much in fines
This Wednesday (13 November) there will be no classes in any of the educational centres in Malaga province
amber or yellow weather warning including Malaga city
There will also be no classes at Malaga University or other private schools
the "preventive evacuation" of some dwellings located on the banks of the Guadalhorce river as it passes through the municipalities of Álora
The Junta de Andalucía's Minister of the Presidency
activated Level 1 of the region's emergency plan at 8.22pm today due to the flood risk from the heavy downpours
This had already been in pre-emergency phase
The emergency level has been raised in response to technical reports
weather forecasts and the outlook for the coming hours in Malaga province of
The decision was also taken in collaboration with the mayors of the affected areas
according to the 112 Andalucía emergency coordination centre
This level of emergency refers to a situation that could involve damage
or when the management plan deems it appropriate
and for which the necessary measures are put into practice for the relief and protection of people or property
As a result of today's meeting with the technical heads of emergencies and civil protection
it was decided to preventively evacuate homes and businesses on the banks of the Guadalhorce river
it has been decided to suspend classes in all educational centres in the Malaga province affected by the weather as well as in Almuñécar
Motril and Albuñol in the province of Granada
The measure also affects day centres and centres for people with disabilities

Locals in Coín cool their street down with massive multi-coloured crocheted awnings
Local residents in the Costa del Sol town of Coín have come together to crochet multicoloured sunshades to cool down their street in the summer sun
The move has left locals and visitors taken aback

angered and concerned about the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022
the largest and deadliest conflict in Europe since WWII
Many of us have been saddened by images of the conflict on the television and in the press
yet most of us feel there is absolutely nothing we can do about this illegal invasion
which has caused hundreds of thousands of casualties
one young Briton based in Alhaurín de la Torre has not only visited the frontline
to "do whatever he can to help the Ukrainian people"
a testimony of his hard journey through the "hell" in which the inhabitants of the regions of Kharkiv
His aim is that the projection of his work will raise at least 15,000 euros for For a Peaceful Sky
a charity established to help people in Ukraine
SUR in English spoke to Jay JC Buckley about his decision to go to the Ukraine frontline as a freelance war reporter
and the reception he received on his first visit in August 2022
I moved to Murcia at just five years old with my parents
I went through a serious depression and spent some time in hospital
I discovered Alhaurín de la Torre by chance and fell in love with it
I got paid on 1 February this year and that same day decided to quit my job and have a fresh start there
There isn't a simple answer to this question
in fact I could write a whole book on this
But the short answer is because the Ukrainian war is our war; they are defending the doors of Europe from a common enemy
Today it's Ukraine being invaded; yesterday it was Georgia: who will it be tomorrow
we are directly involved and it stops being a proxy war
At the time I was a 20-year-old who grew up in what's unquestionably the most peaceful country on the planet
so walking into a war-torn country with nothing but the sound of air raid sirens
fighter jets and explosions is terribly scary
They treated me like a hero because they are desperate for the rest of the world to see what's happening; quite the contrary to Israel
where the press are hated and not really allowed to see much
The documentary tries to put a face to the numbers we see on the news
It's meant to educate people and open people's eyes to witness Russian terrorism first hand
an organisation that volunteers on the frontlines providing aid to civilian victims and military personnel
is the USA/Europe doing enough to help Ukraine
We need to let Ukraine use our weapons inside Russian territory and strike back
The USA is only giving the basic needs which they are obliged to do under the Bucharest treaty that made Ukraine give up their nuclear weapons and lose its rank as the third in nuclear arms
What more can be done to bring an end to the conflict
Ukraine should not give up a single square foot of its land
Donald Trump claimed he would put an immediate end to the war if he wins the 2024 presidential election: do you think he can uphold this claim
But people forget Ukraine has been at war for a decade since the annexation of Crimea and the war in the Donbas region (Donetsk and Luhansk)
which is my primary area of work alongside Kharkiv
he didn't end the war when he was president before and it was a smaller scale war
Because giving up Ukrainian land and prohibiting them from joining Nato is just setting Russia up for a future and inevitable invasion
But then we have to help rebuild and get justice for Ukraine
International film stars including Tom Cruise
Antonio Banderas and John Travolta are part of this beautiful work: a crochet awning dedicated to the world of cinema by the ‘ganchilleras’ (women who crochet) of Alhaurín de la Torre
The ‘ganchilleras’ have returned to work for yet another summer and Alhaurín de la Torre is already showing of their new work
their now classic awning to cool the temperature in the main street is dedicated to the world of cinema
International film stars and singers: Whoopi Goldberg
which is already arousing interest among the villagers and visitors who come to photograph them
The ‘ganchilleras’ are women from the village who are enrolled in the crochet workshop and who prepare these awnings throughout the year
they even crochet the faces of well-known artists
They are all directed by the teacher Eva Pacheco
who goes out of her way to help her students
This crochet workshop has been running for five years and there are 40 women who take part as students. This is a project based on a circular economy
given that it is made using recycled material and the awning is reused every year
Buckley's reason for going to the front line in Ukraine was "for mental health'
to Alhaurín de la Torre in Malaga province
"he is in love with" and where he arrived in February 2024
"I got my salary and decided to leave Murcia to come here and find peace," he says
in which he mixes his incursions in Ukraine with the quiet day-to-day life in the town in the Guadalhorce valley
he alternates "a normal job of customer service" with work on behalf of the civilian population suffering the consequences of the Russian attack
This eagerness to collaborate has led him to direct the documentary Voices from the Front
Places in Ukraine under constant shelling and deprivation of all kinds
His aim is that the screening of his work will raise at least 15,000 euros for the charity organisation For a Peaceful Sky
The Vicente Aleixandre Cultural Centre in Alhaurín was chosen for the premiere of the film
which was sold out; the film will travel to other parts of Spain in search of donations
And why the war in Ukraine and not another
"It is a direct threat to European countries
Putin is nostalgic for the former USSR and wants his territory back
who say that the conflict will not end until the last Russian leaves their country
nevertheless convinced that Russia will be defeated
he is ready to do his bit to help those suffering from the brutal onslaught and has already announced that he will return to Ukrainian territory
Buckley has dared to speak out for those who need a voice
people suffer because of their sexual orientation
The average price of housing in Malaga province stood at 2,440.10 euros per square metre in the third quarter of this year
according to data from Spain’s ministry of housing
This represents an increase of 9.4% compared to the levels of a year ago
The figure puts Malaga in third place amid the provinces where house prices have risen the most in the last 12 months
only behind Valencia (10.2%) and the Balearic Islands (9.9%)
According to the assessed value per square metre in Malaga - the marker used by the ministry to compile its statistics
not the prices at which properties are sold - the province is the sixth highest in the country behind only Madrid
In Spain as a whole the price of flats and apartments has risen by 6% in the last year to 1,921 euros per square metre
In Andalucía the increase is 6.4% to almost 1,600 euros
The report from the ministry of housing also gives the figures for municipalities with more than 25,000 inhabitants
the most expensive price per square metre does not correspond to Malaga city
the city is among the cheapest - or rather
the least expensive - of the main municipalities in the province
The price of housing in Malaga city is 2,605.20 euros per square metre
which is the most expensive town for house purchases at 3,324.60 euros/m2
Estepona (2,727.70 euros) and even Mijas (2,634.10 euros)
In summary: of the 12 municipalities with over 25,000 inhabitants in the province there are seven where housing is more expensive than in the provincial capital
That places Malaga city in eighth place in the provincial price ranking and there are only four where the price per square metre is lower: Alhaurín de la Torre (2,236.20 euros)
then Ronda (1,283 euros) and lastly Antequera (1,213)
CEO of real estate company Foro Consultores
the explanation for these varying figures lies in the type of demand that exists in some municipalities as opposed to others
For those that are currently more expensive
he believes that the holiday component lends weight
teacher of real estate ecosystem at the Real Estate Business School in Torremolinos
behind the locations with higher average prices than Malaga city
there is “the coveted seafront and sea views” as well as the “higher proportion of purchases by non-resident nationals
Europeans and foreigners due to tourism (culture
as well as investment or as digital nomads.”
If we compare the price of housing in the municipalities of Malaga province with prices in the rest of the Spanish towns with a 25,000-plus population
Torremolinos is in 21st place and yet Malaga city does not make an appearance until number 45
if Malaga is the sixth most expensive province in Spain
it is seventh in value per square metre behind Madrid
Torremolinos is the municipality in the province of Malaga where house prices have risen the most over the last year (18.3%)
The town is followed by Rincón de la Victoria and Estepona (above 16%)
and in Vélez-Málaga and Mijas (15.4% and 14.2% respectively)
The provincial average rise is 9.4% and prices in Malaga city increased by 13.6%
the increase in the price of housing has been the lowest in the whole province
The price of property in Malaga province is at an all-time high
In the second quarter of 2024 it surpassed the previous record of 2,348.30 euros set in the first quarter of 2008
before the bursting of the financial and real estate bubble and the slide into recession
With data from the third quarter the average value in the province is almost 4% above the levels of the property boom just over 15 years ago
The situation is most striking in Torremolinos
where the current price of around 3,100 euros is more than 17% higher than the highs reached between 2007 and 2008 at around 2,640 euros
In Marbella today housing is around 15% more expensive than in the previous boom
current prices are over 13% higher than they were 15 years ago
valuations are higher than in 2008 and by wider margins than in the provincial capital
Pérez points out that if we add the data from Torrox and Nerja
the feeling of price saturation along mainly the western Costa del Sol becomes even stronger
are new luxury developments responsible for raising the average
Pérez points out that there are too few transactions involving new construction to pull up the average
Among the dozen largest towns in the province
there are four in which record levels have not yet been reached and the furthest from those levels is Antequera
where housing is now 37% cheaper than in 2008
Then it was close to 2,000 euros per square metre
Meanwhile in Ronda the record was set at around 1,815 euros and now the price is 1,283
the current average price (1,965 euros per square metre) is 13.65% lower than the peak of the cycle
"More supply available and less demand," states José Antonio Pérez
in Estepona neither have the peaks of 15 years ago been repeated
What can we expect from now on regarding house prices
Smerdou says: "A year ago I didn't think they could go up so much
but I think they will continue to rise: demand is still strong
there is no supply and the Euribor has gone down."
