A forest fire has broken out caused by what is thought to have been a lightning strike early Saturday
in the El Pocico area of Huércal de Almería has led to the activation of the pre-emergency phase of the Infoca Plan
The blaze, mostly scorching esparto grass fields and scrubland in the Sierra de Gádor across Huércal de Almería
is said to remain distant from the most populated areas
not posing an immediate threat to residents
but is causing concern due to its rapid spread
The fire’s visibility from nearby towns led to over 100 emergency calls from Huércal de Almería
the Civil Guard requested the evacuation of approximately 20 people from the Las Balsas area in Gádor
though Mayor Lourdes Ramos reported the situation was under control
Emergency plans have been activated due to potential risks exacerbated by changing winds
The response peaked with over 100 personnel
Aerial support includes two Superpuma helicopters and one medium-heavy helicopter
just leaving ground crews to attempt to stop the fire from spreading more
Huércal de Almería’s patron saint festivities have continued so far uninterrupted

An unexpected appearance has surprised nature lovers and experts in Almeria: for the first time the presence of deer has been recorded in the Sorbas plains
The observation was made thanks to a motion-activated camera installed by Asociación Serbal Almeria
an organisation dedicated to the study and conservation of biodiversity in the province
recently released by the association on its social media
shows two females moving at ease through an area of wild thyme and grassy scrubland
an unusual type of habitat for this species
this sighting marks a milestone as until now there was no record of any deer being so close to the small town of Sorbas
The spread of red deer (cervus elaphus) across parts of Almeria is a phenomenon already known to wildlife experts
although previously their presence had been limited to areas such as the Sierra de los Filabres and a widely distributed population going from Fiñana to Bédar
Sightings have also occurred in other mountainous areas such as the Sierra de Estancias
Sierra Alhamilla and even in Tabernas Desert
Serbal points out that this expansion is due both to the natural dispersal of the species when herds became too large for the local enviornment to support them and
their appearance in Sorbas opens up new questions about the behaviour and adaptation of this species of deer to new environments in the province
"They seem to feel at home," says the spokesperson for the association
Serbal views this finding as yet another indicator of the changes that Almeria's fauna is undergoing
runs multiple monitoring and conservation programmes for endangered species in the province
and is widely recognised for its work in environmental education through workshops

Historic Blackout Throughout Spain and Portugal
A historic blackout swept across mainland Spain and Portugal on Monday
power didn’t return until the early hours of April 29
but phone networks and Wi-Fi remained down
‘People turned to Facebook groups because they couldn’t call or message family and friends,’ said one resident
and police had to guide people away from queues
‘This blackout gave us some remarkable scenes,’ said a local
a young woman directed traffic for over five hours
That probably helped prevent accidents at one of the city’s busiest junctions.’
Another local described the surreal experience: ‘No light
like the last survivor in a zombie video game.’
put it simply: ‘The blackout reminded us of something essential

Belgian beats Max Kanter and Emilien Jeannière in high-speed sprint
as the French squad battles for WorldTour survival.
Every sprint, every race and every placing could prove to be vital as Cofidis fight with XDS Astana
Picnic-PostNL and Uno-X Mobility for the final placing amongst the 18 WorldTour teams.
XDS Astana have been on a roll in recent races after strengthening their roster for 2025
Fretin responded for Cofidis in Roquetas de Mar with a perfectly-executed sprint and morale-boosting win.
The Belgian made sure he was on the XDS Astana lead in the final kilometre and then took the shortest line on the sweeping curve to the finish
as his rivals were forced to go wide.
just beating Max Kanter (XDS Astana) and Emilien Jeannière (TotalEnergies)
Arnaud De Lie (Lotto) was a frustrated fourth after going wide
with Giovanni Lonardi (Polti-VisitMalta) fifth.
Kanter took 150 points for XDS Astana but Cofidis showed they were ready for a fight for every point and with Fretin earned 50 more
In the last four kilometres we were too far behind but the guys made sure that I could move up and put me in the perfect position
This victory is for the whole team," said Fretin
“It is important to score as many points as possible
we have someone like Bryan Coquard who can also get extra points.”
The attacks came from kilometre zero of the 189km race with an attack going clear after five fast minutes of racing
Victor Vercouillie (Team Flanders-Baloise)
Luca Paletti (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) and Arabay
Joan Albert Riera and Joan Gamundi (Illes Balears) were in there and soon opened a lead of a minute.
Tudor Pro Cycling Team and Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team rode on the front to make sure the gap never went beyond 2:30
even on the slopes of the l’Alto de Celin climb
The peloton upped the speed in the second half of the race
with Cofidis and Lotto helping reduce the gap to a minute.
Curto and Gamundi were dropped from the attack with 60km to go as the race passed along the Almeria coast
There was some tension in the peloton but the catch would only come with 10km to race and when the sprinters realised they were in charge of the race
VF Group Bardiani–CSF Faizanè
Movistar and Lotto all tried to take charge in the fast final kilometres but all failed
Cofidis and XDS Astana hit the front in the final kilometre and Gleb Syritsa launched the sprint for Kanter
XDS Astana had the best line through the easy switching chicane corners and seemed in charge
However Fretin was tucked on Kanter's wheel
realising he had a superb chance of victory.
Kanter kicked a little early and Fretin could wait before launching his own acceleration with 70 metres to go
It was a perfect execution and he held off those trying to do the same trick from behind him.

Almería is currently dealing with one of its worst water shortages in recent history
A large part of the province is in a state of emergency due to the ongoing drought
and it’s impacting both residents and farmers
the water situation has reached critical levels
with some towns now facing a daily limit of 200 litres of water per person
This has created a lot of tension between local governments
all trying to figure out how to handle the situation
The Almanzora Valley has been hit especially hard since the suspension of the Negratín-Almanzora water transfer in 2021
which cut off 50 million cubic metres of water each year
This has left farmers struggling to sustain their crops
while local residents face severe water restrictions
with daily consumption limits impacting everyday life
The desalination plant in Carboneras is a vital but fragile resource for the region
While desalination is seen as a temporary fix
both farmers and experts are calling for more sustainable solutions
The desalination plant provides some relief
and the reliance on this method alone cannot guarantee long-term water security for the province
local authorities are working to improve water reuse and irrigation systems
which delivers water directly to the roots of plants
is one example of how technology can help conserve water
this system needs to be adopted on a wider scale to make a significant impact
Local authorities are quick to point out that more long-term solutions are necessary to make sure the province doesn’t face another crisis in the future
As Almería continues to deal with the water shortage
finding a balance between immediate needs and sustainable practices will be key to its future water security

Mini-Hollywood is a theme park in the Spanish desert based around the Wild West sets built for Sergio Leone’s Dollars trilogy
it offers a window on to a storied period of Spanish film history in the time of Franco
In the 2002 tragicomic faux western 800 Bullets
Basque filmmaker Alex de la Iglesia homes in on the life and fragmented family of an ageing stuntman in Almería who ekes out a living by recreating scenes from the mythical western films in which he once participated
with the production of Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns starring Clint Eastwood
this hottest and poorest of areas (a “hell-hole full of sand and snakes” in the exaggerated words of Miami Herald journalist Rex Reed) was briefly a hotbed of blockbuster movie production
only the occasional production has returned to Almería – including the video for Depeche Mode’s ‘Personal Jesus’
Jim Jarmusch’s 2009 film The Limits of Control
and Pedro Almodóvar’s short English-language western Strange Way of Life (2023)
more locals are kept in jobs by movie tourism than filmmaking
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Mini-Hollywood
a theme park in the Tabernas desert that was developed in 1974 around the sets first constructed for Leone by Carlo Simi back in 1963
The Franco regime (1939 to 1975) ingratiated itself with foreign film productions
as these provided much needed investment and helped to rebrand a fascist dictatorship as a Catholic bulwark against communism
Production costs were a fraction of what they were in the US or even in Mexico
and the army often lent a hand if extras were required
David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia (1962) had decamped to Andalusia
Almería had been a bastion of Republican resistance
and suffered aerial bombing from Franco and his Axis allies
The region was left to languish in poverty in the so-called ‘years of hunger’ of the 1940s and 1950s
with some locals migrating to Morocco in search of a better life
Multiple crowd scenes in Lawrence of Arabia incorporate a somewhat indiscriminate combination of Moroccan and Spanish extras
Several westerns had been shot around Madrid prior to the Dollars trilogy
but the landscape and light of Almería were even better suited to recreating the American Wild West
Sets built for Leone’s films were referred to as Yucca City
Extras were a curious mixture of locals and outsiders
infamous leader of the Ojos Negros (Black Eyes) – one of several real-life Spanish gangs first established in imitation of the street gangs in West Side Story (1961) – was recruited in Madrid
As part of her project to recuperate marginalised stories of Gypsy participation in cinema in Spain
Tamara Moya from the Carlos III University plans to interview the many extras paid to come to Tabernas to stand in as Indians
spoke to me this summer about how male extras were paid per day they let their facial hair grow
Eastwood’s nickname among the Gypsy extras was “el payo del cigarro” (whitey with the cigar)
Looking back on the films that turned him into a global icon
Eastwood has remarked on how relaxed the Franco regime was about them shooting in Spain as long as they kept clear of local politics
The only cut requested for the ultra-violent For a Few Dollars More (with over five and half million tickets sold
the 1965 film held the record as the most popular film at the Spanish box-office for decades) was of a young woman lying in bed
Spanish producer Alfredo Fraile bought up the sets
but the glory days had well and truly come to an end by 1974
The site was bought up by a Catalan-born hotelier
Mini-Hollywood is still owned by a chain of local hotels and remains open for business
The taxi driver from Tabernas who picked me up (it is easier to find a horse in the Andalusian desert than a local bus) told me how his son had tried his luck unsuccessfully as a bullfighter and is now retraining as a police officer because he wants an escape plan
his only option is for his mother to get him a job in the Mini-Hollywood bar saloon where she has worked her way up to become manager
I needed a strong gin and tonic to survive a 15-minute cancan show I’d seen in the saloon earlier that day
male participants in the outdoors western show stayed in role by knocking back beers: in 2024
their alcohol consumption is more of a health and safety concern than gunpowder

Brett Dryden’s family has been campaigning for answers over the tragic death of ‘the life and soul of our family’
I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice
The sister of a British man who died in a Spanish holiday resort town has spoken of her fears he could have been ‘murdered’
was found dead in his Almeria flat with a four-inch gash to his head
Spanish police initially explained the father-of-one’s death as a pulmonary embolism or a blood clot
Police later told his family that his home in the small town of Mojacar
Andalusia had been robbed and an investigation into what happened is still ongoing
The father-of-one’s body was discovered on July 22, five years after moving to the resort Costa Almeria to run a legal cannabis club called The Dawg House
Mr Dryden was found lying on the floor facing upwards next to a living room window by friends who had arranged to meet him
His sister Shannen Adams told The Independent: “It’s hell on earth
but knowing whoever did this and for them to be held accountable would bring us a little closure at least
“There isn’t a day that goes by when I don’t think of him
He would have moved mountains for any of his family and friends
“We won’t ever stop until we get justice for our beautiful Brett,” she continued
“I spoke to Brett two days before his death
He had only just got back to Spain after being home visiting us in the UK.”
Sandra Adams from Chester-Le-Street in County Durham
had flown over to Spain on her late son’s 36th birthday to speak to locals and police about the night he died
Neighbours told his family that three men were spotted on CCTV fleeing the scene of the death
prompting fears Mr Dryden could have been killed in a botched robbery
His mother also claims she received a silent call from her son's phone hours after medics say he was already dead
she found it was being turned on and off and pinging from different locations across Spain
She has flown her son’s body back to the UK to undergo more forensic testing but the results were inconclusive
In February Ms Adams told The Mirror about what happened when the family first raised their suspicions about her son’s death
‘There’s footage of people going into Brett’s house and running away’
I flagged up all these things and that we think it was murder,” she explained
‘We need you and your husband to take a step back and let us deal with it now’.”
The investigation into the death is still ongoing with the Guardia Civil yet to comment on it publicly
The Independent has contacted the force for comment
A court spokesman previously said: “The investigation hasn’t been suspended or closed
It is still open and this incident remains under investigation
"The court is waiting for the Civil Guard to complete their full report and present their conclusions
For the time being there’s nothing more we can say."

Thrips parvispinus continues to be a major challenge for pepper producers in the province of Almeria
this species was first detected in Spain in 2020
it represents a danger due to the serious damage it causes," Asaja Almeria explains
"The damage that it causes the fruits is mainly aesthetic
affecting their appearance and reducing their commercial value
it does not compromise their quality or food safety
as consumers often reject products with visible imperfections."
"There's been a notable increase in the incidence of this pest this season
affecting approximately 30% of the area devoted to pepper in the province
This increase is forcing farmers to make adjustments in their cultivation practices
such as advancing pepper uprootings to make way for watermelon
These changes could lead to imbalances in the market for these vegetables in the coming season."
"The main damage observed includes bud and flower abortion
This pest does not transmit the spotted wilt virus
but the symptoms it causes are similar to those generated by other pests such as Polyphagotarsonemus latus (white spider mite)."
"Management of Thrips parvispinus in pepper crops requires comprehensive strategies
Prevention measures include the maintenance of adequate greenhouse enclosures
and constant monitoring to locate outbreaks
Key actions in cultural practices include solarizing the soil
there is growing concern due to the lack of tools to combat this pest
Current solutions are not sufficient to stop the spread of parvispinus
"Introducing auxiliary fauna such as Orius laevigatus and reinforcing it in strategic areas with authorized phytosanitary treatments that are compatible with biological control can be an effective way to control this pest if carried out correctly
These actions are essential to protect crops."
ASAJA Almería highlighted that the "lack of sufficient tools to effectively combat this pest increases concern among farmers." It also reminded farmers of the importance of agricultural insurance
as a tool to protect themselves against adversities such as those caused by parvispinus
The agricultural organization urged the Ministry of Agriculture
and Food "to provide active ingredients to combat this pest and protect the agricultural sector
We also ask the Andalusian Regional Ministry of Agriculture
to take measures to control the spread of parvispinus in the province."

who works for the Spanish cooperative Coexphal
lives only 20 kilometres away from the horticultural area of El Ejido
In his hometown it had only rained a little
when he visited the horticultural area hit by severe weather on Tuesday
he saw quite a few greenhouses affected by the hail damage
I expect the impact on the overall crop to be limited."
"An estimated 90 hectares of greenhouses succumbed to the hail
but it is only a small percentage of the approximately 33,000 hectares of cultivation in Almería
with a sloping roof structure can handle this weight
There are quite a few greenhouses in which the hail has smashed right through the plastic
especially those where the plastic was almost due for replacement
Many car windows and solar panels were also smashed by hailstones the size of ping-pong balls
in the affected area I also see many greenhouses with absolutely nothing to see," Jan says
"I heard that the mayor spoke of an area of 4,500 hectares that suffered damage
but that seems to me to be a gross exaggeration
Tomatoes are grown very little in the area in question
I don't believe it's about the 20% pepper mentioned
because ultimately only a limited area has been affected
"Fortunately in Almería there were no personal accidents
the hail fell in the evening when nobody was working in the greenhouses
So in that respect it is much worse in some villages in Valencia
where so much rain fell in a short time that people were swallowed by a swirling stream," Jan continued
"The crops are just at the beginning here in Almería
The pepper crops are slowly coming on stream
was a pretty problematic month for fruiting
which meant that supply was at a lower level
some larger volumes are coming onto the market," says Jan
who has now lived and worked in Spain for more than 30 years
Van der Blom does not see that many changes compared to last year
"Growers are still apprehensive about the ToBRFV virus
There are also quite a few varieties that have high resistance
We do see that since last year there have been more trip problems

Until April 20, Almería province will observe Semana Santa (Holy Week)
a time of religious tradition and cultural significance
The most important dates are Holy Thursday (April 17) and Good Friday (April 18)
which are official bank holidays in the Province of Almeria
while public transport runs with reduced services so keep this in mind
The week features solemn processions where religious statues are carried through the streets by robed brotherhoods
and community participation.Key events include the silent Procesión del Silencio on Thursday night (Holy Thursday)
and the dramatic Santo Entierro (Holy Burial) procession on Good Friday
Both are powerful and symbolic moments in the Holy Week calendar
Smaller towns across the province host their own unique celebrations
You might find local touches such as traditional music
Even if you’ve seen Semana Santa in a big city
Almería’s more intimate atmosphere has a different and personal perspective
arriving early guarantees better views as crowds gather along procession routes
and check local timetables for road closures affecting travel
Easter Sunday brings joyful celebrations marking the end of Holy Week
It’s also worth noting that driving and parking in city centres may be difficult during the main events

Almería is set to undergo a major transformation in 2025
with three significant projects that will reshape the city and offer a much-needed economic boost
These renovations are designed to modernise the city
and enhance the overall experience for both residents and visitors
The first major project on the list is the ongoing transformation of Almería’s Rambla
This iconic area celebrates its 25th anniversary this year
and it is getting a facelift that will significantly improve its appeal
The Rambla’s redesign aims to create more green spaces
and make the area more accessible and welcoming
it will become an even more attractive destination for locals and tourists
work will begin on a major renovation of the Paseo de Almería (Almería Promenade)
The focus will be on the section between Puerta Purchena and Navarro Rodrigo
with the goal of completing it by Christmas 2025
This renovation is part of a broader effort to revitalise the area
inspired by successful pedestrianisation projects seen in cities like Málaga and Granada
The new design will connect the heart of Almería with the port
creating a more vibrant and accessible space
This upgrade will not only beautify the city but also make it more convenient for pedestrians and cyclists
Another exciting development is the integration of the port with the city itself
This €11 million project will streamline traffic flow and create better connectivity between the city and its maritime hub
the port will become a more attractive area for tourists and a more practical space for the local community
The city’s makeover will not only enhance its visual appeal but also improve its infrastructure
making it a better place to live and visit
Almería’s economy is expected to see significant growth
thanks to increased tourism and more efficient city town centre spaces
and these transformations will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact

Sports streaming company DAZN has signed on as the main partner of Spanish second-tier soccer outfit UD Almería
The deal for the 2024/25 season will see DAZN’s logo feature on the jerseys of Almería’s men’s and women’s teams
with the streamer also securing branding on advertising screens at the club’s stadium and on the pitch
a club characterised by its fighting spirit and strong bond with its fans
has found in DAZN an ally that shares its vision for the future and its aspirations,” said UD Almería chief executive Mohamed El Assy
“We’re delighted to count on DAZN’s support in our project for the growth and development of the club and Almería’s society through sport.”
added: “We’re excited to join forces with UD Almería
who shares our vision of excellence and dedication to enhancing the fan experience through constant innovation
“We’re looking forward to contributing to the success of both teams chaired by His Excellency Turki Alalshikh
with whom we’ve been collaborating for some time in Saudi Arabia to increase access to sport and create a global fan community.”
DAZN is no stranger to branching out beyond broadcast and content partnerships to help build its brand
Al Nassr’s Portuguese soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo signed on as a global ambassador of the company back in 2018
while British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has a deal with the streamer that sees him act as a special advisor and ambassador
Sponsorship of a soccer club, however, is newer territory for DAZN. The pact with a second division side that currently sits 17th in the table seems a surprising move, even if Almería claim to be the second most-followed club in the Segunda División that also boasts ‘one of the most valuable squads’ in the league
the union between the pair highlights the deepening ties between DAZN and Saudi Arabia
chairman of the country’s General Entertainment Authority
with the 43-year-old also the architect of various high-profile cards that have been broadcast by DAZN
In addition, Reuters reported this week that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is considering taking a minority stake in DAZN
which is also airing the Saudi Pro League and this month’s Six Kings Slam tennis exhibition in Riyadh
It has started to feel inevitable that DAZN would forge even closer bonds with Saudi Arabia
The company may have racked up hefty losses having spent heavily over the past decade in a bid to establish itself as a leading global sports streaming player
but it now has its sights set on profitability and external investment to boost further expansion
Indeed, Segev has praised the Gulf state’s widescale sports investments, describing the move to SportsPro as “blessed” and a “positive thing”
A sponsorship tie-up with a second-tier soccer club may not sound seismic
this is the latest commitment from DAZN to forge a committed
long-term partnership with Saudi Arabia in order to support the company’s broader business plans
