marked a deeply significant date in the history of Almoradí — the anniversary of the devastating 1829 earthquake that not only transformed the town but also obliterated nearby municipalities such as Torrevieja
Almoradí has honoured the memory of the disaster with an annual prayer to San Emigdio
the patron saint invoked against earthquakes
the Almoradí City Council is putting the final touches on the much-anticipated “Earthquake Museum”
Housed in one of the few surviving homes rebuilt after the quake
the museum aims to bring history to life through an immersive experience that will allow visitors to relive the earthquake’s impact on the daily lives of the region’s inhabitants
The museum not only recounts the events of March 21
but also recreates the rebirth of Almoradí
emotional journey into the most transformative event in the history of Vega Baja
the museum will also serve an educational purpose
raising awareness about the prevention of natural disasters
a crucial topic in a region historically vulnerable to such events
A special section of the museum will pay tribute to José Agustín de Larramendi
a central figure in the reconstruction efforts that gave rise to modern Almoradí
The building itself was purchased by the Council in late 2018 and underwent restoration through a grant from the Alicante Provincial Council’s Historic Architectural Heritage Rehabilitation Plan
The museum installation was made possible thanks to European funding from the NextGenerationEU Recovery
Almoradí will offer both locals and visitors an opportunity to connect deeply with its past
and appreciate the historical significance of a disaster that reshaped an entire region

Almoradi is putting the final touches on preparations for Holy Week
which has been declared of Provincial Tourist Interest for the first time
described this year’s Holy Week as particularly special
with a Lenten programme full of extraordinary events
He also announced a promotional campaign aimed at highlighting its unique appeal and attracting visitors to experience a celebration deeply rooted in history
The Holy Week magazine
which provides detailed insights into events running until Easter Sunday a key day in the celebrations
is to showcase Almoradí’s religious heritage in the streets through processions
Mayor María Gómez also thanked everyone involved in securing this tourism distinction, which she said reflects the deep-rooted passion with which Holy Week has been celebrated for centuries
She noted the continuous growth of the event
and a variety of cultural activities such as exhibitions and concerts that have helped establish Almoradí’s Holy Week as one of the most significant in the province
The mayor also extended an open invitation to visitors
encouraging them to experience Almoradí’s Holy Week and witness the devotion and enthusiasm that make it such a special occasion
Almoradí will once again shine as the centre of attention with the 10th National Artichoke Congress
This highly anticipated event features a packed schedule of over 30 activities celebrating the region’s prized vegetable
Mayor María Gómez emphasised the significance of this milestone, highlighting the event’s recognition as an Autonomous Tourist Interest attraction. “Each year, we welcome more visitors from across the country, drawn not only by the artichoke but also by the unique gastronomic experience this festival offers.”
“Its success is a result of the dedication and teamwork of many individuals
to whom I extend my gratitude,” she stated

Almoradi is celebrating the success of the 10th National Artichoke Congress
which took place on the second weekend of February in Plaza de la Constitución
Throughout the week, Almoradí hosted a grand artichoke gastronomic exhibition that highlighted the culinary expertise of local chefs, who created a variety of dishes featuring the region’s prized artichokes
Hundreds of people enjoyed artichoke-themed menus prepared by restaurants like Silvino
The dishes include creative recipes such as “pickled artichokes with quail legs
artichoke and foie gras ravioli with truffled potato cream
and artichoke parmigiana with Iberian pork cheek.” These offerings have given diners the chance to savour the region’s signature vegetable in a range of preparations
showcasing Almoradí’s high culinary standards
the National Artichoke Congress and the Gastronomic Exhibition have helped establish Almoradí as a national leader in fine dining
known for its high-quality products and exceptional service
The continued success of these events reflects their growing popularity and the town’s dedication to promoting its rich gastronomic heritage
It seems that one of the five young people arrested for the murder of the Almoradí truck driver in Belgium
who are accused of throwing a manhole cover from a bridge
smashing through the windscreen of the truck
and causing the death of driver Gheorghe Tibil
had previously fired a compressed air gun at a parked tourist
This was shown by a video circulating on social networks and published by the Belgian media company Sudinfo
was also the person who threw the sewer lid from the bridge above the E42
who minutes earlier had relieved his fiancée
and who managed to stop the vehicle after the tragedy
three 18-year-olds are being held in prison while L.M.
is being held in a youth detention centre in Saint-Hubert
The second minor from amongst the five detainees was allowed to return to his home
although he is subject to a family maintenance order
one of the three 18-year-olds who are locked up
says her son “is not a criminal.” “He was in the wrong place
with the wrong people,” adding that “he didn’t throw that lid.”
According to information from an alleged judicial leak
reportedly challenged his friends to throw the sewer lid together from the bridge
“These guys didn’t pose a danger to anyone before,” Donovan
others say they have not been greatly surprised by their arrest: “Honest
don’t paint the reputation of the five very well
Another local girl doesn’t draw a flattering image of the group’s “leader.” “He has already made some serious mistakes,” she said
adding that “he is unbearable and also usually uses drugs.” On the night of the tragedy the five had been consuming nitrous oxide
Two other youngsters have since been arrested
who were arrested last Thursday following another incident
Both allegedly participated in events similar to those that killed the Almoradí driver
another trucker had also been the victim of a drainage deck thrown from the same E42 bridge
two days before the fatal accident of Gheorghe Tibil
although in his case there was only material damage to his vehicle
The prosecution quickly established a link between these two cases
As part of the investigation into Tibil’s death
ruled that the three main suspects will remain in pretrial detention for another month
After initially being described as a murder
the events were reclassified as malicious obstruction of transit with the circumstance that it caused one death
Fabio Marasti and Laetitia Joiris were lucky to escape injury
Their vehicle was hit by a rock while travelling on the E42 motorway
the same road on which Gheorghe Tibil lost his life
“Be careful if you pass under the highway bridge between Dison and Rechain
towards Verviers,” Fabio posted on her social media
“We wanted to raise people’s awareness
It’s a game for them but it can cost others their lives,” warns Laetitia Joiris
who was in the passenger seat at the time of the impact
we didn’t know what it was,” says Laetitia Joiris
“Pieces of glass fell on our heads and then we saw the hole in the sunroof
People told us they’d seen a number of young people running away.”
The couple wants to raise awareness of the seriousness of the action
the stone could have hit the windscreen with far more serious consequences.”
the widow of Almoradí’s trucker who was killed by the vandals in Belgium said
“I will be traumatized for the rest of my life.”
Almoradi is set to host “Walking Among Artichokes” on Sunday

The walk will pass through landmarks such as the Árbol de los Mazones
As they stroll through the artichoke fields

Each participant will also receive a t-shirt
This free event combines nature, sport, and music, with a lively atmosphere enhanced by a giant vegetable paella served at the end of the walk

Almoradi Council has warned about fraudulent telephone activities falsely associated with its name
According to a statement made by the Local Police
individuals posing as staff from the Town Hall are attempting to deceive unsuspecting victims by soliciting money in exchange for permits and licenses
The Almoradí Local Police stress the importance of not disclosing personal information during such calls
The scammer reportedly contacts potential victims
promising to deliver permit and commercial service license renewals via courier
the calls have targeted clinics and orthopaedic centres
the caller abruptly hangs up after receiving a “yes” response
Authorities advise against answering “yes” during such calls
as scammers may record the response and misuse it to authorise financial transactions
Whilst the scammer is currently targeting businesses, the Police and Council have stressed concerns that this may spread to the general public
sea and sand - it's a lifestyle we all dream of
but only a few of us are brave enough to go for it
Jacqui Lockhart from Scotland left for Almoradi on the Costa Blanca shortly after the airing of her episode of A Place in the Sun back in December 2017
Originally looking for a holiday home, Jacqui travelled to Spain in search of her dream escape with the help of presenter Danni Menzies
Jacqui fell for a flat in Almoradi with a communal pool and rooftop costing just £45,000
Her apartment did start off as a holiday home
but after visiting 10 times in the first year
Jacqui took the plunge and decided to make it her permanent home
I wasn't doing anything and things were passing me by
Talking to Sun Travel about her move to sunny Spain - ahead of her return to A Place in The Sun: What Happened Next which airs on Monday 24 March - Jacqui
says: "It took a lot of guts for me to move
I'm not coming back to the UK' took a lot of courage
Before her move, Jacqui had been living in a small town near Edinburgh where she admitted she wasn't living life to the fullest
"I wasn't doing anything and things were passing me by
I'm far more outdoorsy than I was in Scotland
"Better weather does make life so much easier - it's less painful
"I go cycling three times a week with my friends
and we'll go down to the beach."
Another of Jacqui's newest hobbies is sailing, which she likes to do with her partner, Peter O'Reilly, a fellow Scot who she met in Spain
Jacqui tells us: "He's actually from across the water in Scotland - it's strange
he literally lived around the corner from me
but we met through mutual friends in Spain."
which she still owns and goes back to when she returns to the UK for trips
She says: "I don't miss anything about Scotland and I won't be moving back
"But I do still visit, usually in July or August, because it gets too hot here, and then Christmas
so I can see my two-year-old granddaughter
"That's the only thing I feel guilty about out
I wonder if I should be more part of her life
"But the flip side of the coin is that when she's older, she'll come out and spend the Easter holidays with me."
Jacqui's lucky enough to be mortgage-free on both her properties too after working in a banking for many years
She told us: "It took me a long time to do that
let me tell you - it didn't happen overnight
It's been only been six years since Jacqui made her A Place in The Sun debut
but so much has changed and she's really taken the move in her stride
She's even been brushing up on her Spanish and volunteering to help her improve
She added: "I go to Spanish classes every week
and my Spanish friends help me out with that too
"Once a week I volunteer in a charity shop too which helps me pick up some words
very basic conversation - mainly ordering a drink."
She says that one of the biggest perks of life abroad is that going out for meals and drinks works out to be a lot cheaper
Jacqui said: "I love going out for meals, and it's so much cheaper than in the UK, you can get a glass of wine for €1.50
"You can get a three-course meal and a coffee for around €10."
While Jacqui bravely bit the bullet and loves her new life abroad
she does heed some warnings for anyone hoping to do the same
I don't miss anything about Scotland and I won't be moving back
She explained: "I'm lucky as I have a plan B
"But I know a lot of people here who have sold up completely
stock and barrel and now they're coming into their dotage and they can't go back because they can't afford it
"I also know some people who came just before Covid wanting to open a bar and then as they started
had to close because Spain went into lockdown
"They lost so much money and used all their savings to live and have had to move back to the UK and rent which is such a shame
"My other piece of advice would be to rent first to see if you like the area. Thanks to Brexit
Brits can only rent in Spain for three months at a time
but do that and get to know the town you like."
There's a town in Costa Blanca that looks like a stunning Greek island..
Altea in Costa Blanca is just 20 minutes by car from the famous Brit-loved resort
it is far removed from the town known for its huge bars and clubs
Altea is often visited more by locals than tourists, with the laid-back town being much quieter. It's nickname of the Santorini of Spain is partly because of the white-washed houses lining the narrow roads
One of the more famous views is of the two bright blue-roofed towers overlooking the streets
which has amazing views over the beach and of the huge mountain in the distance - part of Parc Natural de la Serra Gelada
market stalls dot the cobbled streets at weekends and in the summer festivals engulf the whole area
Along the way are a number of small shops sunken into the buildings
which sell local gifts such as trinkets and clothes
Otherwise outside of the historic centre is the seaside
with the 500 metre beach being made up of both pebbles and sand
I would have chosen somewhere closer to the water
"I didn't realise just how much I prefer it. So I would advise anyone wanting to move to experience the town or the village first, and in winter and summer too."
Jacqui insisted she wouldn't ever move away from Almoradi now - it has become her home
Since the move she's gone on to explore lots of other areas in Spain like Guadalmar
I look out the window across the mountains and I think 'how lucky am I?' I wish I'd done this 20 years ago."

Agents of the National Police in Spain have dismantled a criminal organization based in Benidorm
which was involved in the cultivation of marijuana in the province of Alicante and which was then distributed throughout Europe
The police operation culminated in the complete dissolution of the organization where 13 members of this gang were arrested
12 of Albanian nationality and 1 of Spanish nationality. The police investigation began as a result of various information that the investigation team was handling about the existence of a criminal group based in the province of Alicante and more specifically in the city of Benidorm and its surroundings
where the organization cultivated marijuana for subsequent distribution at the European level
Information was also received from one of the electricity distribution companies that closely cooperates with the State Security Forces and Bodies for the detection of fraud in the supply of electricity. The information provided by the electricity company showed excessive electricity consumption with network losses from various industrial buildings and houses in the Benidorm city of Alicante
the agents launched an investigation to uncover this excessive consumption that generally tends to detect fraudulent or illegal wiring that supplies electricity to indoor marijuana crops
It was verified that the cultivation of narcotics by this group took place in apartments and several different industrial warehouses located in the cities of Benidorm
El Albir and Almoradí. During the controls
three vehicles used by the arrested for transporting drugs
a jet ski and numerous tools for cultivation and treatment were seized
the ages of those arrested are from 18 to 51 years old

None of the municipalities in the Alicante Province with more than 20,000 inhabitants achieves the average income
History repeats itself as Almoradí and Torrevieja remain among the ten Spanish municipalities
with populations of more than 20,000 inhabitants
with the lowest net income per resident in the country
according to the report produced annually by the National Institute of Statistics (INE)
based on information provided by the Tax agency
the Madrid populations of Pozuelo de Alarcón
with 28,326 euros of declared net income per inhabitant
are the two richest populations; while at the opposite end of the scale are the Almeria municipalities of Níjar
Among the municipalities with the lowest income
Almoradí is the town outside of Andalusia that is lowest on the list
with an income of only 7,840 euros per resident
just 356 euros more than the previous year
These statistics have already angered Torrevieja municipal officials
who say that they do not conform to reality
by not taking into account the incomes of foreign residents
at the INE they point out that the calculations are based only on those residents for whom they have income data
so if a citizen does not declare anything in Spain
the province does not come out of the study too well since none of the 25 municipalities that appear in the study reach the national average income
The municipalities of the metropolitan area of Alicante are those with the best figures
so the richest municipality in the province is Sant Joan
with 11,557 euros net per resident; followed by El Campello
Alcoy has an average net income of 10,786 euros; Ibi
