Barça Atlètic’s survival hopes took a major dent as they stumbled to a 2-0 defeat at home to Amorebieta
bringing an end to a promising run of three wins in four
Sergi Milà’s side now sit five points adrift of safety
trying to pick apart a deep-lying Amorebieta
They thought they’d found the breakthrough when Cedric and Jan Virgili combined beautifully
only for a dubious offside call to deny them
but Barça couldn’t turn possession into goals
Amelibia rose highest at a corner to nod the visitors ahead on 35 minutes
Barça pushed for an equaliser after the break
but the hosts couldn’t find a way past the stubborn Amorebieta rearguard
it was Iñigo Muñoz who struck at the other end
burying Barça with a ruthless second midway through the half
the blaugranes were left empty-handed — their finishing woes proving costly
The result halts their recent resurgence and leaves them needing a major lift ahead of their crucial trip to Lugo on 4 May

Rodrigue Kwizera and Francine Niyomukunzi completed an unprecedented Burundian double at the Cross Internacional Zornotza – the first Gold event of this season’s World Athletics Cross Country Tour – in Amorebieta on Sunday (20)
Niyomukunzi won the women’s race by more than a minute
while Kwizera kicked ahead on the final lap to take the men’s race
Uganda’s Dan Kibet went off like a bullet in the men’s 8.7km event
covering the opening kilometre in a swift 2:47
followed only by his compatriots Oscar Chelimo and Kenneth Kiprop as well as pre-race favourite Kwizera
took turns with Kibet at the front with the second kilometre covered in 2:50
Teenager Kiprop remained at the back of the lead quartet but was starting to struggle
Kwizera moved into the lead for the first time and his first change of speed was enough to leave Kiprop behind
but Kwizera then launched a devastating burst of speed on the final lap – covered in 5:48 – to win by 12 seconds from Chelimo
Kibet was a further eight seconds behind while a fading Kiprop was overtaken in the later stages by Kenya’s Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang
“It was a tough race for me because it was hot,” said Kwizera
“The first kilometres were quite fast and I preferred to stay at the back of the leading pack; then I moved to the front to asses my rivals’ energy and at the bell I decided to push hard
It’s important for me to accumulate points for the Cross Country Tour as I have been the winner for the last two seasons
I’ll next race in Atapuerca on Sunday.”
2021 winner Niyomukunzi took command from the outset
closely followed by Spanish marathon record-holder Majida Maayouf
They slowly began to open up a gap on a chase quintet comprising Hungary’s Lili Anna Vindics Toth
Ecuador’s Katherine Tisalema and the Spanish trio of Carolina Robles
Maayouf couldn’t live with Niyomukunzi’s swift cadence for much longer
and the Burundian reached the 3km mark with a four-second lead over Maayouf
herself 16 seconds ahead of Vindics-Toth and Robles
Niyomukunzi’s lead had grown to 44 seconds and she extended that to more than a minute by the time she reached the finish line in 30:07
Maayouf managed to dispose of Robles’ challenge while Vindics-Toth finished fourth
but Maayouf joined me in the lead so I kept on increasing the pace and fortunately I broke away from her,” said Niyomukunzi
who’ll also be racing in Atapuerca next weekend
“I felt quite strong throughout the race.”

A former Chicago police detective subpoenaed NBC News journalist Maite Amorebieta in September 2024 in connection with a wrongful conviction suit against him and other officers
a senior investigative producer for NBC News
was subpoenaed for her communications and unpublished work product on Sept
by the defendant in an ongoing civil lawsuit in Chicago
According to court records reviewed by the U.S
Amorebieta appeared to have ignored the initial subpoena and the defendant made no attempts to force her compliance after a judge ruled in October that doing so would have to go through federal courts where Amorebieta either lives or works
Amorebieta was identified as a potential witness by former police detective Reynaldo Guevara
Guevara is one of eight law enforcement officers sued in 2023 by Jose Cruz
who alleges he was wrongfully convicted of first degree murder and attempted murder 30 years earlier
Guevara subpoenaed Amorebieta — along with multiple other journalists — in September 2024, seeking the journalist’s interview recordings, transcripts, notes and communications concerning Cruz. The request initially asked that the documents be turned over by Sept. 16, according to court filings
He also notified the court of his plans to request testimony from Amorebieta and filmmaker Margaret Byrne
During a hearing on Sept
told the court that Amorebieta had spoken with Cruz while he was incarcerated
“So we are specifically looking for any communications or documents related to Mr
She added that they had spoken with an attorney representing Amorebieta the day before to schedule discussions around the requests
Magistrate Judge Gabriel Fuentes reflected on the potential precedent set by allowing a defendant to subpoena journalists for their notes
“I think it’s an important substantive issue of what you can get from reporters,” Fuentes said
“How proper it is to have in a defendant’s playbook: We’re going to slap a bunch of subpoenas on reporters
How much does that burden the exercise of the right of access to documents and the exercise to the First Amendment?”
no discussion had taken place with Guevara’s attorneys
and any attempt to compel compliance with the subpoena would have to be filed through a federal court in New Jersey or New York
Fuentes directed Guevara to follow that procedure
The Tracker was unable to confirm whether any such attempts were made
as Amorebieta was not mentioned in subsequent filings in the case and no motions to compel were filed in any district court
Neither Amorebieta nor her attorney responded to emailed requests for comment

The 70th Cross Internacional Zornotza, the first Gold meeting of this season's World Athletics Cross Country Tour, takes place in Amorebieta on Sunday (20). The line-up is headed by defending Cross Country Tour champion Rodrigue Kwizera and his compatriot Francine Niyomukunzi.
Spain-based Burundian Kwizera is a renowned cross country specialist. He was a joint winner of the 2022-2023 Cross Country Tour, then was the sole champion last season. The last race he completed on the track was his seventh-place finish over 10,000m at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest. This year he mainly focused on the roads, clocking 27:07 for 10km in Herzogenaurach.
This weekend he will be joined by compatriot Egide Ntakarutimana, who clocked a 5000m PB of 13:00.74 in Paris this year then went on to compete at the Olympic Games. He recently won a 10km road race in Arezzo in 28:03.
Kwizera’s stiffest rivalry should come from Ugandan trio Oscar Chelimo, Dan Kibet and Kenneth Kiprop. Chelimo, the 2022 world 5000m bronze medallist, set a PB of 12:54.59 for the distance this year. Kibet finished just outside the top 10 at this year’s World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade; more recently he won over 10km in Berlin in 28:19.
Kiprop earned 5000m bronze at the World U20 Championships in Lima. Ethiopia’s Abdisa Fayisa, who finished marginally ahead of Kiprop, will also be in contention on Sunday. After taking 5000m silver in the Peruvian capital, Fayisa went on to take 1500m gold. More recently he finished third in a road mile in Berango last week.
Spain’s Abderrahman El Khayami, who finished ahead of Fayisa in that race, will also be racing this weekend. The Spanish contingent also includes national silver medallist Nassim Hassaous and Spanish steeplechase record-holder Fernando Carro, fresh from a comfortable victory at the San Sebastian Half Marathon two weeks ago.
For the second year in a row, the women will cover the same distance as the men (8.7km). Niyomukunzi, winner here in 2021, looks a safe bet to win again in Amorebieta. The Burundian started the year with a big PB of 30:42 over 10km in Valencia, then improved her 5000m PB to 14:44.97 before advancing to the Olympic final in Paris.
Her toughest opposition could come from Hungary’s Lili Ann Vindics-Toth. The former steeplechase specialist has recently moved up to longer distances and set a 10km PB of 31:56 earlier this year.
Olympic and European steeplechase finalist Carolina Robles leads the Spanish contingent, alongside Cristina Ruiz, Ángela Viciosa and Majida Maayouf. Ruiz will be aiming for her first podium spot here after fifth-place finishes in 2022 and 2023. Viciosa, daughter of 1998 European 5000m champion Isaac Viciosa, finished fourth in the U23 race at last year’s European Cross Country Championships.
Maayouf, the Spanish marathon record-holder (2:21:27), will be using this race as part of her preparations for the Valencia Marathon in December.
The list of illustrious past winners in Amorebieta include Ethiopia's Gete Wami (1999 and 2000), Kenya's Vivian Cheruiyot (2007 and 2008), Ukraine's Sergey Lebed (2000) and Portugal's Rosa Mota (1986).
Organisers will this weekend pay tribute to two Spanish legends who passed away earlier this year: two-time world cross country champion Carmen Valero and seven-time Amorebieta victor Mariano Haro. Uganda’s Rebecca Cheptegei, runner-up here in 2014, who died tragically just 25 days after finishing the Paris Olympic marathon, will also be remembered.
Weather forecasters predict a pleasant sunny and windless day on Sunday, with the thermometer reaching 23C by the time of the event.
After an extraordinary run of seven consecutive draws, Barça Atlètic have lost at Amorebieta in a game that was all about three late goals, two of which were frustratingly scored in the wrong net.
Playing on a field in poor condition, and which only got worse as the game went by, Barça were also struggling with fitness issues and absent internationals, none of which was helped by the loss of Trilli, who was on the wrong end of a vicious tackle and had to leave the pitch early, although there was encouragement when Víctor Barberà and Aleix Garrido came on as a substitutes to mark their returns from injury.
It was a very close, physical battle in which neither side was able to dominate the other, and although it was packed with chances, surprisingly few put either goalkeeper in real extreme danger.
It looked like the game was going to end in yet another draw, this time 0-0, but with just four minutes remaining Iván Cédric pounced on the rebound after Barberà's shot was blocked, and it looked like the reserves were finally heading for a win. But they weren't. Not even for a draw.
In injury time, Amorebieta stunned the visitors with two goals in the space of a minute, first Berto and then Coulibaly scored, and Barça Atlètic left the Urritxe field in utter disbelief. How on earth had that one slipped away?
Amorebieta: Campos; Carbonell, Calavera, Yuste (Coulibaly 60'), Amelibia, Coto (Kaxe 90'); Muñoz (Berto 90'), Ben Hamed, Hervías (Bravo 71'), Camacho; Selma (Marín 71').
Barça Atlètic: Astralaga; Olmedo (Dacosta 78'), Sergi Domínguez, Mbacke, Oduro; Trilli (Xavi Espart 49'), Pedro Rodríguez, Rubén López (Garrido 78'); Juan Hernández (Barberà 64'), Unai i Iván Cédric.
Goals: 0-1, Iván Cédric (min. 86); 1-1, Berto (min. 90+2); 2-1, Coulibaly (min. 90+3).

Real Betis defender Félix Martí Garreta is receiving treatment in hospital after suffering a head injury following a fall in his home
Garreta, 20, is on a season-long loan at Spanish second division club SD Amorebieta from Betis
"The Amorebieta Sports Club reports that the footballer Félix Martí Garreta recently suffered a craniocerebral traumatism as a result of a fall in the domestic environment," the Basque club said in a statement
"The player on loan from Real Betis Balompié was admitted to a hospital
with a reserved prognosis and pending progress
"The SDA remains in permanent contact with the footballer's family and his club of origin."
Félix Garreta joined Amorebieta on loan from Real Betis this season.(Photo by Ion Alcoba Beitia) GettyBetis also released a statement wishing the 20-year-old a speedy recovery
"All the encouragement, strength and affection of Real Betis and the Betis fans for Félix and his family," the LaLiga club wrote on X
Garreta has scored four goals in 31 league appearances for Amorebieta and has played seven times for Spain's under-19 side
Ethiopia's Likina Amebaw and Burundi's Celestin Ndikumana became the first Gold event winners of this season’s World Athletics Cross Country Tour
claiming victories at the Cross Internacional Zornotza on Sunday (22)
While Amebaw outsprinted her compatriot Lemlem Nibret during the closing stages of the women’s race
Ndikumana was a commanding men’s race winner on a pleasant day in Amorebieta
Right from the start of the 8700m women’s event it was Mawia
closely followed by the Ethiopian duo of Nibret and Amebaw
Alessia Zarbo of France ran alone in fourth
The leading trio covered the opening 2000m lap in 6:49 and the second circuit in 6:55
with Nibret briefly moving to the front by the third kilometre
the leaders had built a margin of 21 seconds on Zarbo
who in turn was well clear of the top Spaniards
while the Spain-based Amebaw remained tucked behind that tandem
Nibret then clocked the fastest split of the race to that point
and shortly after the bell she picked up the pace dramatically to leave Mawia well behind
while Amebaw managed to join her with relative ease
Nibret pushed hard over the final loop but Amebaw did not relinquish and the Ethiopian pair engaged in a thriling sprint finish
Taking advantage of a hilly section some 200m from home
Amebaw broke away from her younger compatriot – who finished fifth in the U20 race at the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst – to win in 29:36 to Nibret's 29:38
Mawia completed the podium another 25 seconds adrift but well clear of Zarbo
who finished fourth just over a minute behind the Kenyan
“I'm over the moon,” said Amebaw
“I have been training so hard for the last three months thinking of this cross country season
I'll next run in Atapuerca next Sunday,” added the 25-year-old
The men’s event witnessed a rocket start by Eritrea's Filmon Kibrom who covered the opening kilometre in 2:47
That pace could only be covered by his compatriot Merhawi Mebrahtu
plus Uganda's world 3000m steeplechase finalist Leonard Chemutai and the pre-race favourite Ndikumana
The quartet clocked 5:45 for the first lap but the pace slowed over the second circuit (6:03)
Celestin Ndikumana wins the Cross Internacional Zornotza (© Asociacion ADOC)
The key movement came halfway into the penultimate lap
Ndikumana kicked and opened up a sizeable advantage in a matter of few metres
Chemutai and Kibrom ran in crocodile file behind Ndikumana
whose 2:55 sixth kilometre killed the race
the leader had a comfortable seven-second margin on Mebrahtu
The 21-year-old Ndikumana extended his lead over the final circuit to maintain the Burundian dominance at this event after Rodrigue Kwizera's win last year
Ndikumana crossed the finish line in 25:34
while Chemutai was never threatened by Kibrom and completed the podium by finishing 10 seconds behind the Eritrean
The top Spaniard was Sergio Paniagua in fifth
"I already competed here last year and came fifth,” said Ndikumana
especially since this race has been won by a lot of great champions in the past

winner of the 2022/2023 World Athletics Cross Country Tour
is one of the leading entrants for the Cross Internacional Zornotza
the first Spanish Gold stop of this season's series
which takes place in Amorebieta on Sunday (22)
She will take on a field that includes Ethiopian duo Likina Amebaw and Lemlem Nibret
while Burundi's Celestine Ndikumana clashes with Uganda’s Leonard Chemutai in the men's event
the women’s race will be held over the same distance as the men’s race
as two of her three victories in last season’s World Cross Country Tour came in races held over 8km
The 24-year-old Kenyan has competed sparingly so far this year
but she’ll likely ramp up her competitive outings now that the cross-country season is beginning
The Spain-based Amebaw won at the final leg of last season's World Cross Country Tour in Albufeira and should be in the hunt for the victory alongside compatriot Nibret
The 18-year-old finished fifth in the U20 race at the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst
then went on to set PBs of 14:56.00 for 5000m and 14:57 for the road 5km
Spanish hopes rest with defending champion Isabel Barreiro
though this weekend’s race will be her first outing since April because a bone edema ended her track season prematurely
The local squad also includes Cristina Ruiz
a 15:25.11 5000m performer who represented Spain at the World Cross in Bathurst
Burundi’s 21-year-old Ndikumana finished 20th in the senior men’s race at this year’s World Cross in Bathurst
then continued his 2023 campaign with a series of PBs on the track and a 15th-place finish in the 5km at the World Road Running Championships in Riga
He finished just ahead of Chemutai in the Latvian capital
and the duo will renew their rivalry this weekend in Amorebieta
20-year-old Chemutai is a steeplechase specialist on the track; this year he lowered his PB to 8:17.14 and reached the World Championships final in Budapest
The line-up also includes Eritrea’s 2015 world marathon champion Ghirmay Ghebreselassie and compatriot Merhawi Mebrahtu
Both live for much of the year in Madrid where they train under the guidance of Jerónimo Bravo but on this occasion they will arrive in Spain on Saturday after a training stint in their home country
Gebreselassie placed fourth at the 2016 Olympics and won the New York marathon later that year
but this weekend he’ll be looking to rebound from his run at the recent Berlin Marathon
this weekend’s race will be his first outing since placing 19th in the 10,000m at the World Championships
who finished seventh at the 2021 European Cross Country Championships
The 29-year-old will aim to replicate his fourth-place finish from last year
but he’ll face domestic opposition from Sergio Paniagua and Andreu Blanes
the national cross-country silver and bronze medallists respectively
The list of illustrious past winners in Amorebieta include Ukraine's Sergey Lebed (2000)
Ethiopia's Gete Wami (1999 and 2000) and Kenya's Vivian Cheruiyot (2007 and 2008)
Weather forecasters predict a sunny and pleasant day on Sunday
with the thermometer reaching between 18-20C by the time of the event
Countdown to the World Cross Country Tour Gol..
Eritrea’s Awet Habte and Burundi’s Francine Niyomukunzi earned victories at the 67th Cross Internacional Zornotza
Spain’s first World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold meeting of the season
Following the late withdrawal of Uganda’s Thomas Ayeko and Sheila Chelangat due to visa issues
fellow Ugandan Joel Ayeko dominated the early stages of the men’s 8.7km contest in the company of Eritrean duo Habte and Yemane Hailesilassie
The opening 2km lap was covered in a moderate 6:15 but Ayeko increased the pace over the second circuit and a 6:02 split left only himself
the Eritrean pair and Uruguay’s Santiago Catofre at the helm of the race
Spain’s Oussaim Oumaiz was alone in fifth
Habte surged and began to build a slight margin on Ayeko while Hailesilassie seemed to be in trouble in third after Habte’s 5:54 split
Habte extended his lead while Oumaiz first overtook Catofre and then started to gain on Hailesilassie in third place
Habte finished well clear of the rest of the field
but Oumaiz finally managed to reel in Hailesilassie and then Ayeko in the final 100 metres to take second spot
marginally ahead of the Eritrean who also overtook a fading Ayeko by inches
The 24-year-old winner lives for much of the year in Madrid and is coached by Jerónimo Bravo who led Tadese Zersenay to his world half marathon record of 58.23
“I competed last Sunday at a half marathon
but despite that effort today I felt strong throughout,” said Habte
who reached the 5000m final at the 2017 World Championships in London
“A couple of years ago I sustained a knee injury and that hampered my progression
then the pandemic came and was another setback but now I feel ready to do great things
My next race will likely be a half marathon in Lisbon.”
The women’s 6.7km event started with Burundi’s Cavaline Nahimana taking an early lead
closely followed by her compatriot Francine Niyomukunzi
pre-race favourite Dolshi Tesfu of Eritrea and Spain’s Isabel Barreiro
who last week completed her fifth half marathon within a seven-week period
showed no signs of fatigue when she broke away from the rest of the lead group after the second kilometre
She covered the first 2km lap in 6:50 and held a six-second advantage on Nahimana
22-year-old Niyomukunzi still led but Tesfu had shortened the gap to four seconds
herself eight seconds clear of Nahimana and Barreiro
Tesfu caught the Burundian with some 700 metres remaining and it looked as though she was well on her way to victory
but Niyomukunzi bounced back strongly and managed to overtake the Eritrean in the closing stages
Barreiro finished ahead of Nahimana to complete the podium

Arter and Milner victorious at Cardiff Cross ..
Barça Atlètic picked up a deserved point at the Estadi Johan Cruyff in a 1-1 draw against an Amorebieta side who are pushing for promotion from the Primera RFEF
With both sides looking to get into the promotion play offs
the game was an important one and that was obvious on the field in the opening half
After Amorebieta had gone close through Jauregi
it was Rafa Márquez's team who took the lead
Barberà's shot was well saved by the keeper but Aranda was on hand to turn in the rebound to put Barça Atlètic 1-0 up on 17 minutes
The lead remained into the second half and Luismi Cruz and then Diounkou both failed to take chances to make it 2-0

Amorebieta made Barça play when just after the hour mark Guerrero turned home a well placed cross from a free kick inside the six yard box to make it 1-1
Barça were reduced to 10 men when Zalaya was shown a second yellow with 10 minutes to go
both side would end the game with 10 men after the visitors' Seguin was also sent off late on

The sprinters finally getting a chance of victory on stage 3 as the Tour de France leaves the Basque Country and enters France.
Stage 3 start in Amorebieta-Etxano and heads along the Basque Country coastline before reaching the French border and continuing north to Bayonne
The 193.5km stage - extended by 6.1km to detour around road furniture - features four climbs before it leaves Spain – the ascents of Trabakua
Itziar and Orioko Benta – but none of them are classified above of category 3 and the fast men should not lose contact with the peloton
That terrain will encourage early attackers
and Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) will be watchful in defence of his polka dot jersey
but the flat run-in to Bayonne lends itself clearly to a bunch sprint
seems unlikely to search for opportunities on Monday
where vigilance will be the order of the day for yellow jersey Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) and the rest of the overall contenders
Jasper Philipsen, meanwhile, will be able to rely on the deluxe lead-out services of his Alpecin-Deceuninck teammate Mathieu van der Poel. A sprint royale is in prospect.

Rafa Márquez's side couldn't find a way past Amorebieta's solid defending in the first half that they largely dominated
it was the home side that was getting the chances
the reserves are off to a fine start in their league
and despite being held to a second draw have yet to taste defeat
Álvaro Núñez hit the post just two minutes into the game
and that was followed by a constant onslaught on the home area
There were goal-line clearances and some fine saves from Basque stopper Unai Merino
When Juanda came close to scoring after the restart
it looked like we were headed for another 45 minutes of blaugrana domination
Amorebieta upped the intensity and suddenly they were the side that most looked like scoring
An impeccable Arnau Tenas was the main reason they did not.

the first day of a new league and a new life
though: while Amorebieta did not play last weekend
Southampton's new signing Victor Wanyama did
Wanyama is from Kenya: the 99th overseas nation to be represented in the Premier League
Amorebieta was born in Cantaura in Venezuela in March 1985
His father was a professional pelota player
dedicated to the most traditional Jai Alai version of the sport
a kind of fives or squash where players have a long basket attached to their wrists and hurl the ball at a wall at great speeds; the record stands at more than 300 kilometres per hour and the Basque government insists it is the fastest sport in the world
Jai Alai became popular in Latin America and the United States
anywhere with an expatriate community where people could bet
"My father went to play pelota vasca in the US
and from there he went to retire in Venezuela
That's why I was born there," Amorebieta explains
I came back to Spain at the age of two."
In 2008 he was included in the Spain squad for a friendly against Denmark but did not play
Venezuela were already monitoring the situation and when the rule preventing him from representing them because he had played for Spain at youth level was repealed in 2009
Amorebieta wrote a formal letter to Fifa and requested a Venezuelan ID card
He was called up in August 2010 but the paperwork had still not been completed
opposed the idea and the chance of a Spain call-up had not disappeared entirely
But when Del Bosque overlooked Amorebieta again in the summer of 2011
the player spoke to the president of the Venezuelan federation and later that year he played his first game for the country he was born in
A month later he scored the winner against Argentina
"That was a difficult decision," he says
It was a great chance to play with a national team like Venezuela that is growing
I could see that it was a nice project for me and that I could help
really contribute to doing something important
But they were very welcoming and in my first official game we beat Argentina at home in a packed stadium and I scored – so imagine how they welcomed me then!"
he will make his debut against Arsenal on Saturday
"I had gone round and round thinking about leaving Athletic
It wasn't an easy decision but I wanted to experience something different," says the 28-year-old
"If I had not gone I would have regretted it."
For some the move may look like a backwards step. Amorebieta is swift: "No," he says, "for me it's a step forward. The Premier League
it's the oldest club in London and that really attracted me
it's closer and easier; there are flights every day
We're away from home and that may be hard but that doesn't frighten me
The first step is linguistic; the question is inevitable
I'm taking classes and have been for months
But the most important thing is quickly to feel part of the team
I'd love to be able to see out my [four-year] contract here
"And if in that time I have been able to prove myself
play well and win them over and they want me to continue
then I'd be delighted and I would think about it
I'd love to play in England for a long time."
Amorebieta has the qualities to "win them over"
Athletic have always been considered the most English of Spanish clubs and Amorebieta fits that prototype
"I'm a player who gives everything," he says
"I'm a player who goes in very hard all the time
sometimes too hard because in the Spanish league the slightest touch and you get a foul against you
It's true that at times I have to rein in that impetus
yet it's also true that if I did not have that I wouldn't be the player I am
"But in England it's totally different
People tell me that the player who is 'hard' or 'dirty' in Spain is 'committed' in England
I think I'm going to like it and I hope they like me."
Kenya’s Mark Kiptoo captured a thrilling sprint victory at the ‘59th Cross Internacional Zornotza’ held on Sunday (6) on a sunny day
The 36-year-old current African 5000m champion was fastest among the five athletes who delivered an unforgettable finish
exactly 20 years after the World Cross Country Championships was held in Amorebieta
the younger sister of the renowned Linet Masai
stamped her authority to grab a five-second win from Eritrea’s Nazareth Weldu
the 19-year-old Masai follows in her illustrious sister’s footsteps as the three-time World cross silver medallist Linet won in Amorebieta back in 2009
In the absence of 2011 and 2012 victor Joseph Ebuya
it was his fellow Kenyan Vincent Kiprop Chepkok who wore the ‘1’ bib
The recent Venta de Baños winner tried his best from the gun to improve on his two runner-up places here over the last couple of years
Eritrea’s Kuflom Sium was the early leader closely followed by Chepkok
Uganda’s Simon Ayeko and the Eritrean pair of Amanuel Mesel and Kidane Tadese
the only non-African in the leading group was Spain’s Javier Guerra
a creditable eighth at last month’s European Cross Country Championships in Budapest
Much to the delight of the knowledgeable Spanish crowd
Guerra moved to the front some 10 minutes into the race but his lead was short-lived as the Spanish-based Sium soon returned to the front to increase the pace
only six men remained with winning chances at the 6km point (18:37); the Eritrean trio
Chepkok and Sium took turns at sharing the lead for several kilometres while the eventual winner Kiptoo remained cautiously tucked behind
but the increasingly quicker rhythm set by the African armada (6:05 2km lap compared to the previous 6:18) made the 29-year-old surrender on the closing lap
The last 1km turned out to be a five-man battle in the hunt for the victory
With 100m remaining all of them were virtually even but it was the oldest by far
who found another gear in the latter stages to take the lead for the very first time in the race
There was no catching him and he romped home in 32:42
clearly ahead of Mesel (32:44) while Chepkok had to find some consolation in his third-place finish ahead of Sium
“I can’t describe my happiness as I had finished fifth and fourth in previous years and I’m now the champion!” commented Kiptoo
who took up athletics seriously at the late age of 29
The women’s 6.7km contest was billed as a battle between Magdalene Masai
last year’s winner Nazareth Weldu and Spain’s Diana Martín
fresh from a third place at last Monday’s New Year’s Eve race in Madrid where she set a massive career best of 32:32 for 10km on the road
The race began quite conservatively with Weldu and Spain’s Jacqueline Martín dictating the early pace
No less than 13 women made up the large lead group at midway with Diana Martín in charge of the race
but Masai injected a much brisker pace some 1.8km away from home which only could be matched by the in-form Martín
looking for the first home victory since the year 2006
The fierce Masai-Martín clash lasted 1.2km as the Kenyan managed to open a sizeable margin to secure her win
herself seven seconds ahead of a trio comprising Weldu and Spaniards Zulema Fuentes-Pila and Lidia Rodríguez
Martín’s second place didn’t seem in jeopardy
but the heated fight for the third spot led Weldu to pip a tired Martín by inches
five seconds adrift of the victor but one second clear of the Spaniard
“My sister Linet had told me about this race and it has not let me down at all,” commented Masai
who was born exactly one week after the IAAF Cross Country Championships were held in Amorebieta 20 years ago
then I pushed hard and when I realised Martín faltered a bit I knew the win was mine.”

The defender Amorebieta has signed a four-year deal at Craven Cottage after eight seasons in La Liga with Bilbao, while Boateng has joined on a one-year deal with an option for a further season.
Fulham have now signed up three players for next season, having taken up an option to permanently sign Sascha Riether from Cologne after a successful season-long loan spell.
However, Amorebieta's arrival is arguably the most impressive addition so far as they beat off reported interest from Arsenal, Everton and Zenit St Petersburg.
The 28-year-old defender made more than 250 appearances for Bilbao and will be a welcome addition to what has at times been a shaky Fulham defence.
"I'm impressed with the talent already at the club and I look forward to meeting the players for pre-season training in July," he told the club's website.
Relief is the overriding emotion after Boateng completed his protracted move. The Fulham manager Martin Jol has been a long-time admirer of the Ghana international and has attempted to bring him in on several occasions. Boateng's transfer had to be put on ice previously due to contract disputes with his Ukrainian club, but a deal for the 30-year-old has finally completed his move from Dnipro.
"I've been working hard to come here and I'll do my best for the club," Boateng said. "It's been a long road for me but now I'm here I'm so happy and I can't wait to start and give everything I have."

The UPV/EHU’s Applied Photonics Group has developed an optical thermometer for the industrial sector based on a very special optical fibre capable of measuring temperature across a wide thermal range with a high degree of sensitivity. Furthermore, the fibre is an inert component that does not interact with the environment.
"To develop the sensor or thermometer, we conducted a theoretical analysis by exploring in detail the bases relating to the effect of temperature on these fibres in order to predict the most temperature-sensitive geometry. The thermometer designed operates across a wide thermal range from -25 degrees Celsius to 900 degrees Celsius and is robustly packaged to withstand harsh environments," added Josu Amorebieta.
Amorebieta joined Fulham from Spanish side Athletic Bilbao back in the summer of 2013 and many believed at the time that the defender would prove to be a very good signing for the Cottagers
Amorebieta struggled to adapt to life in England and was unable to prevent Fulham from suffering the ignominy of relegation from the Premier League during the debut campaign
The following season in the Championship would prove to be even worse for Amorebieta as he made only 7 appearances due to a knee injury
Last season proved to be somewhat of an improvement for the 31-year-old as he returned from his loan spell from Middlesbrough in February and played a crucial role in helping the Cottagers stave off relegation
However, Amorebieta delivered a shock to the Fulham faithful in June after reportedly informing the Cottagers officials that he would not be playing for the club again (Sky Sports)
Given the fact that Amorebieta has only one year remaining on his current deal at Craven Cottage
Fulham now seemingly have no other option than to cash in on the defender this summer
Despite Amorebieta’s admission of wanting to leave though
he has surprisingly been included in the Fulham squad for their training camp to the Republic of Ireland and the former Venezuelan international has seemingly dropped a huge hint that he might stay put at the club by expressing his excitement ahead of the tour through social media website Twitter

Castilla drew after conceding a penalty in 90th minute
Castilla needed to bounce back and get back to the play-off spot in the table
Solari probably expected a very physical game
so he opted to bolster the midfield with an additional defensive midfielder
tried to disrupt the play as much as possible and yet somehow they escaped well-deserved yellow cards
Castilla's starting XI: Luca Zidane; Achraf-Javi-Hermoso-Tejero; Valverde-Tena; Enzo-Febas-Sergio Díaz; Campuzano
Achraf and the Febas-Diaz duo created few good chances
Febas particularly caused a lot of trouble to Amorebieta’s defence with his marauding runs
This early dominance was rewarded by a goal in the 18th minute and Enzo released Campuzano with a beautiful through ball
Amorebieta threatened mainly from set pieces and corners
so it was paramount not to give away too many fouls near the box
In the last fifteen minutes of the first half
Amorebieta were the better team with much better chances
Castilla’s defence once again showed lack of concentration and allowed 1v1 chance for Amorebieta
a free volley from the penalty spot and two other great chances
Only thanks to absolutely exquisite goalkeeping from Luca Zidane
Castilla started strong again and after two minutes
they scored their second goal of the match
Campuzano correctly guessed the bounce of the ball and left the defender behind him
then he played a brilliant pass to Aleix Febas
who was free on goal and calmly put the ball in the net to make it 2-0
Sergio Diaz had a couple of brilliant runs down the left wing
however his decision-making needs to improve
because he wasted far too many good chances including a very promising 2v1 situation
Febas and Diaz were our main attacking outlets and when Febas got tired in the second half
Sergio Diaz was forced to rely only on himself and this led to many long dribbling runs
He completely missed the ball when he tried to clear it
and let Amorebieta’s player through and to score – 2:1
Luca Zidane channeled his inner-Lev Yashin and produced two stunning saves in quick succession and saved a sure goal
But even these moments didn’t wake Castilla up enough to start playing their football
Instead they allowed Amorebieta to impose themselves on the game
Solari reacted by taking off the tired Febas and Enzo — who apart from that assist didn’t produce anything else — for Javi Muňoz and Seaone
This helped to stabilize the midfield and regain a bit of control of the match
Amorebieta then started to target Castilla’s left wing
so Solari took off Diaz and put Abner on to ensure extra protection
This move totally shut down our offence in the last 15 minutes
The last 15 minutes were far too familiar for Castilla followers
and allowed the opponent into the game to the point they were fearing for the result
Amorebieta found an extra gear and were constantly pressuring and squeezing Castilla
who defended all the crosses and set pieces quite well
Amorebieta were awarded a throw-in — the ball went into the box and Valverde made a challenge
The assistant referee signaled that it was a foul and thus a penalty
which Amorebieta converted to level the game late
Castilla should have won this game and the players were rightfully angered by the last-minute penalty that was called against them
Castilla now find themselves in 8th position in the table
two points off the 4th place (play-off spot)
The man of the match award has to go to Luca Zidane
who has pulled off several excellent saves and single-handedly kept Castilla in the lead till the 90th minute
He didn't put a foot wrong on Saturday and I only hope that he will be able to consistently produce such performances in the next games
And he also made this outrageous assist to Segio Díaz this season:

Brentford's manager Mark Warburton and his assistant David Weir, leaving at the end of the month whatever happens, were given an rousing send-off after their last match at Griffin Park, but to lose after an impressive second half recovery made it a bitter-sweet night for them.
Promoted a year ago from League One, they fought back admirably from conceding the opening goal to Jelle Vossen and were on top once Andre Gray scored his 18th goal of the season to equalise.
"It was a better second half," Warburton said. "We must defend better but we did enough to say we'll go up there next Friday and give a good show."
Drawing the second game of an eventful season 6-6 away to Dagenham & Redbridge promised a lively campaign for his team, as well as illustrating their strength and weakness. Having knocked in 78 league goals and conceded 59 proved a vulnerabilty in defence, which Middlesbrough, more frugal at both ends of the pitch, took advantage of to lead after 25 minutes.
Chelsea's manager Jose Mourinho was in the stand to watch Patrick Bamford, the Championship player of the year who he had been happy to loan to his friend and former Real Madrid assistant Aitor Karanka. Like Andre Gray, playing the same main striker's role for Brentford, Bamford was well policed. Gray also suffered for most of the night from a physical disadvantage against two hulking central defenders, whose height added to the visitors' threat from set pieces.
By half-time, the home side's best efforts were therefore a fiercely struck 25 yard drive by Alan Judge and a header over the bar by centre-half James Tarkowski. That latter effort stemmed from a free-kick conceded by Clayton, whose yellow card was one of Boro's six.
The FA Cup final referee Jon Moss, who had apparently handled only one Championship match this season, found his fitness examined in keeping up with the furious pace of the game and his patience tested by Boro's tackling.
Not that Karanka's team were prepared to sit back and as play swept breathlessly back and forth, each goalkeeper pulled off an exceptional save to keep the tie level until Amoribieta's late flourish. Button was first, leaping high to his left to repel Adomah's left footer struck on the rise; four minutes later Konstantopoulos had to do the same as Jonathan Douglas burst forward onto the end of Jota's cross for a header that was on course for the top corner of the net.
It was harsh on Warburton's braves when a late corner was headed back into the danger area for Amorebieta, on loan from their neighbours Fulham, to drive in off a defender. "We have to keep the ball more," Karanka said. But it's an amazing win."

Leganés achieved a very important victory in their visit to S.D
A great goal by Juan Cruz in the 77th minute gave the three points to a team that played with ten men from the 35th minute after Neyou's VAR expulsion
Leganés took the field at Lezama with three changes in their lineup compared to the last match against Eibar: Jorge Sáenz returned to the center of the defense after serving a suspension in place of Arambarri
Miramón returned after his indisposition to take Darko Brasanac's position
and Miguel de la Fuente started at the attacking end in detriment
Dani Raba had the first clear chance for Leganés in minute 9
after a ball to Portillo's back that the '10' crossed too much
who caught his dry right-footed shot after Neyou's delivery
Borja Jiménez was forced to make his first substitution due to Miramón's injury
Amorebieta gave Lega their first scare with a set piece headed by former Lega player Bustinza
although the goal was disallowed for offside
referee Lax Franco showed Neyou the straight red card after being warned by the VAR after an action that the referee sanctioned with a caution in the first instance
Lega was down to ten men with almost an hour to play
With no more chances than a header by Unzueta that went narrowly wide
The game resumed after the break with a double change by Borja Jiménez
who introduced Luis Perea and Darko Brasanac in place of Portillo and Raba
Lega was looking for space on the counter with one less player
trying to take advantage of a transition with Miguel de la Fuente
Amorebieta had a good option in minute 55 with a long-range shot by Bustinza that went just wide
although the Blue and Whites defended their area well against the local attempts
Diego García replaced Miguel in attack to look for fresh legs up front
Diego himself was on the verge of getting on the end of a service from Nyom from the right
but his forced shot didn't find the target
the 0-1 would arrive: Nyom stole on the right flank to Juan Cruz
who cut inside and released a left-footed shot that beat Campos to score the goal that put the Blue and Whites ahead with his first goal in the Madrid shirt
with Arambarri coming on in place of the striker Juan Cruz
A moving Leganés defended tooth and nail against an Amorebieta team that bombarded the area with everything
but the enormous collective effort prevented the local chances from coming
The Lega adds three very valuable points that keep them one more day at the top of the table
Their next match will take place this Sunday (14:00) at Butarque against C.D

Rafa Benitez is ready to add defensive reinforcements to his squad with a £10million move for Athletic Bilbao centre-back Fernando Amorebieta
To add to Benitez's concerns, defensive linchpins Martin Skrtel and Jamie Carragher took a battering in the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday
with Skrtel having to be replaced after sustaining a facial injury
Benitez had the imposing Amorebieta watched in Bilbao on Sunday night as the 6ft 3in star was playing Barcelona in the Spanish equivalent of the Community Shield
Despite receiving £30million for midfielder Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid
Benitez may still struggle to convince Liverpool's American owners to pay the fee for a player who has not yet been capped by Spain

“Sociedad Deportivo Amorebieta communicated that the footballer Felix Marti Garreta has suffered cranial trauma as the result of a domestic fall.
Spanish second-division club Amorebieta said their central defender Felix Garreta had been placed in an induced coma after suffering a domestic accident.
The 20-year-old is currently hospitalised in Barcelona after hitting his head. He fell while visiting his home town of Palau-solità i Plegamans, which is close to Barcelona.
“The player, who is on loan from Real Betis, is currently in hospital with reserved forecast and depending on his progress,” the club said.
Garreta had an excellent season on loan at the club, playing 33 matches, and it was expected that he would spend pre-season with the Real Betis first-team squad.
