First published: November 12, 2024 07:03 PM The Catalan police Mossos d'Esquadra is investigating the death of a father and his son in Arenys de Mar, in the Maresme county, outside of Barcelona.  The victims are 32-year-old man and a minor, whose bodies were found with signs of violence.  According to a press release issued by Mossos d'Esquadra, the local police of Arenys de Mar received a call during the night warning them that there could be someone dead in that house.  Local and Catalan police officers responded to the location and discovered a small fire inside the house. When the police forces were able to enter, they found the two bodies.  The house is located in an urbanization known as 'Colònia Andersen'. The estate where the events took place is and old mansion divided into five smaller houses.   Throughout the year, only two people live in the property, the victim and Jordi, a neighbor who lives alone. The other houses are owned by families who use them as a second residence.  Jordi, the neighbor, explained that during the events there was no one else in the estate, as he arrived later.  The parents of the minor had recently divorced, and he visited his father frequently. Jordi confirmed that he did so "frequently".  He also stated that father and son had a good relationship.  The case is currently under investigation and under a secrecy order.  Get the day's biggest stories right to your phone where simmerings of discontent first came to the boil eight years ago is as keen as ever for Catalan independence a two-taxi town of a little under 9,000 people that lies an hour north-west of Barcelona hides neither its colours nor its loyalties Its hues are the red and yellow of the traditional Catalan senyera flag yellow and blue of the separatist estelada banner and the many colours of the strings of laconic but insistent pennants that hang between the pollarded plane trees of the high street While it lacks the cosmopolitan clout of the Catalan capital and the smart yacht clubs that dot the nearby coast the hillside town has earned its place in contemporary history It was here, eight years ago, that the early simmerings of regional discontent began to come to the boil when the residents of Arenys de Munt became the first Catalans to vote on a now-familiar question: “Do you agree that Catalonia should become an independent Town after town followed suit and the movement snowballed, culminating in October’s unilateral declaration of independence after a region-wide vote showed 90% in favour on a turnout of 43% less than an hour after secessionist Catalan MPs voted to declare independence Spain’s senate gave the country’s prime minister Rajoy called snap elections to be held on 21 December Although Puigdemont is in Belgium and his former vice-president Oriol Junquerasis in jail pending possible charges including rebellion and sedition both they and their parties are going to contest the election More than a dozen Catalan leaders face charges but all are eligible to stand so long as they are not convicted and barred from public office Among those also running are the anti-independence En Comú Podem-Catalunya en Comú coalition and Spain’s ruling conservative People’s party Pro-independence parties used the polls two years ago as a de facto vote on splitting from Spain and Puigdemont’s coalition set about paving the way for the unilateral referendum Pro-independence parties will be looking to use next week’s vote to maintain their momentum Opposition parties will be looking to capitalise on the frustrations of the roughly 50% of Catalans opposed to independence Members of the 135-seat Catalan parliament are elected using proportional representation The seats are divided into four districts: at least 3% of the vote in each district is needed to win seats The electoral system is weighted in favour of less populated rural areas Thank you for your feedback.Spain responded by sacking the Catalan government and calling fresh elections which will see people casting their votes next week Polls suggest support for pro- and anti-independence parties is evenly split Arenys de Munt’s pro-independence council remains deeply proud of the symbolic poll, in which 96% of people voted to leave Spain “We’re a small place but the referendum really put us on the map,” says Àngel Vallcorba a councillor for the Catalan Republican Left party (ERC) “We lit the fuse and a lot of other towns and cities started holding their own consultations Arenys de Munt is seen a bit as the bressol Campaigning in September in the Catalan referendum in Arenys de Munt Photograph: AlamyWhile those Catalans opposed to independence would probably view the 2009 vote as the slow-burning fuse that would eventually detonate regional unity many in Arenys de Munt prefer to look on their actions as a benign act of democratic midwifery the town’s mayor argues that the Spanish authorities left them with little choice but to act unilaterally and after years and years of massive demonstrations – millions of people on the streets calling for a different relationship with the Spanish state – the answer has always been no,” says Joan Rabasseda “If you had a million people on the streets of any other EU country calling for something I think the government would pay attention to what they were saying … There’s never been any effort to court people.” Rabasseda likes to invert the question of why half the inhabitants of one of Spain’s wealthiest regions would want to strike out on their own: “What do we stand to gain by carrying on as Spaniards? What are the benefits of being Spanish and belonging to a state with arbitrary justice, incredible levels of corruption and high-speed trains that go nowhere?” The mayor points to the Spanish government’s failure to invest properly in regional rail infrastructure and its decision to thwart measures designed to help low-income families manage their energy bills There are also taxes: “A family of four people in Arenys de Munt are paying €10,000 in taxes that go to Madrid and don’t come back,” he says Rabasseda’s litany of complaints is not new the push for independence is about economics as much as identity and culture For all the talk of Spanish authoritarianism and the claims that Franco’s ghost has somehow seeped out of his tomb in the Valle de los Caídos to stalk the land once more the current crisis is about pockets as well as pride The refrain of “España nos roba” (Spain is robbing us) may have become a cliche yet it remains a pertinent articulation of how many feel but it’s important for us to be independent for one reason: Madrid discriminates against us; they don’t like us,” says Teresa Riera whose grocery is decked out with an estelada and a picture of the two Jordis “All the taxes from here go to Madrid and we just get back what they feel like giving us you have to pay the toll for the motorway … They have put trains all around Spain – even if they are only used by one person – but they haven’t put them here.” The Catalan independence and European flags were hoisted at the town hall in Arenys de Munt in the weeks before the independence vote but there’s been no change and we’ve always been told ‘no’,” she says “The percentage of people voting for independence used to be small and now it’s just grown and grown I don’t think there’s any other choice now.” who has lived in Arenys de Munt all her 57 years also hopes that independence will come so that her grandchildren can grow up in a country very different from the one in which she did “I couldn’t study Catalan at school under Franco and because of that I still make mistakes in my written Catalan … you can’t forget what you have gone through.” Memory and defeat play a large part in the independence movement. Catalonia’s national day, Riera points out, marks not a triumph but the fall of Barcelona in the Spanish war of succession in 1714 have suffered over the past two months may prove to have shored up support for their cause when Catalans go to the polls The results from Arenys de Munt are unlikely to yield any surprises The town’s minority of Socialist party and rightwing People’s party (PP) supporters will vote as they always do their ballot papers wildly eclipsed by the pro-independence majority “You have people sitting down in bars and talking about things – PP supporters in their 80s sitting at the same table as independence supporters,” says Vallcorba but over a glass of wine and without any problems.” Riera, too, dismisses talk of the “social rupture” that the events of recent weeks have visited on other parts of Catalonia. “That’s just rubbish. If people are your friends, you keep talking to them, whatever they think. If I’m Barcelona FC and you’re Real Madrid, can’t we be friends?” Toni Jane, a 58-year-old retired bank worker out walking his dog, is happy to bide his time, secure in the belief that independence will eventually arrive. “Some revolutions are very quick,” he says, “and some are very slow.” SpainChevron CataloniaChevron BarcelonaChevron Lovely. How accessible is it?Take the R1 train from Plaça Catalunya toward Blanes or Maçanet-Massanes; from there, it'll be an hourlong ride. Once you’ve arrived, an unpaved-but-compacted promenade extends all the way to Arenys de Mar. Got it. Decent services and facilities, would you say? You’ll find showers and toilets, plus a buzzy fitness scene on the esplanade. How’s the actual beach stuff—sand and surf?Once you’ve hotfooted it to the water’s edge—which takes a while, given how wide the beach is—it’s yours to jump into. Anything special we should look for?Canet was home to Modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner—the mind behind Barcelona’s epic Palau de la Música Catalana—and the town is somewhat of a shrine to him today. His former house is now a museum (Casa Museu). You can also visit his remodeled 11th-century castle, Castell de Santa Florentina – used as a filming location in season six of Game of Thrones – which is a 30-minute walk from the beach. If we’re thinking about going, what—and who—is this beach best for?Of all the northern beaches, Canet doesn’t quite have the cliff-top spectacle of Calella’s Les Roques or the photogenic finesse of Caldes d’Estrac. Yet it feels like one to watch. He associates his childhood world with Sinera and turns it into something that he would have liked it to be but was not. In most of his work, Sinera is almost geographically and historically a copy of the Arenys of his childhood but, by focusing on the reality that destroyed it, he makes it Sinera. He steals Arenys to build Sinera’s fiction. “Espriu is the master of manipulation” –explains Pep Quintana, TV presenter and specialist in the diffusion of Salvador Espriu’s work through itineraries in Arenys de Mar. Created by JEZZ Media These are weeks of uncertainty for businesses all over the world regarding the new US tariff policy, and Catalan exporters are no exception. The entry into force of the new levies came into effect on Wednesday and is already disrupting the day-to-day activity of businesses with their main markets in the US. This is the case of the Molí Parellada winery in Torrelavit (Alt Penedès), which has 8,400 bottles stopped at the port of Barcelona by order of the importer. A 20% tariff is now being applied to wine and cava. Another of the affected sectors is steel, which has had a 25% tariff for a month. "We are trying to stay calm, but we have reasons to be nervous," say Transmesa, a manufacturer of tubes for machinery and the automotive industry based in Arenys de Mar (Maresme). The metallurgical company manufactures precision tubes for oil injectors, hydraulic systems, and cooling circuits, among other applications. The American market represents 25% of its production and the "movements" that are taking place in the US are generating "unease" in the company. The CEO of Transmesa, Joan Ramon Domènech, admits that some effects are already being noticed. "We see that there are fewer orders coming in these days because people are scared." Domènech even believes that an economic standstill due to "fear" or the fall of the stock markets is "more dangerous than the tariff itself." Agricultural machinery manufacturers in the Lleida region are exercising prudence and opting for market diversification in the face of the tariffs. Although the impact among manufacturers is uneven, since not all of them export to the United States, in general terms, they expect a global increase in the price of their products as a result of the tariff crisis. This was explained to the Catalan News Agency by the president of the territorial association of the sector, Marc Gili. One of the firms that is most affected by Trump's tariffs is Arcusin, in Vila-sana (Pla d'Urgell), which has decided to stop exports to the United States. The country was previously its main market, where they sold 50% of their production, and they are now looking for alternative markets. The United States is imposing tariffs of at least 20% on imports from the European Union starting this Wednesday. According to the executive order of US President Donald Trump, signed last Wednesday, the universal 10% tax on all imports is increased to 20% for European imports, except for those products that already pay 25% tariffs, such as steel, aluminum and cars. Tariffs of 104% are also coming into force in China, 30% in South Africa, 26% in India, and 24% in Japan. The EU and India are trying to negotiate with the White House, but Beijing has quickly responded with new tariffs on the US and is ready to "fight to the end" in a trade war with Trump. v1.1.0. The cabinet plans to build the new accommodations in 82 different municipalities from all four regions: Barcelona, Girona, Tarragona and Lleida. At the moment, social housing accounts for 2% of the total homes in Catalonia, very far from the European average of 15%. The government is working on a long-term plan that would raise the figure to 7% of the total market by 2042. The Catalan president, Pere Aragonès, announced it on Friday, while visiting works of 24 such homes in Rubí, in the northern part of Barcelona's metropolitan area – they will be used for affordable rents. "Access to housing is not a luxury, it is a basic right," said Aragonès to the press. "We are committed to meeting a more than evident societal need." Territory minister Juli Fernández called on all sides involved in property to make an effort in order to boost social housing, including developers. The municipalities involved include the four regional capitals, metropolitan cities such as Badalona, Terrassa, l'Hospitalet de Llobregat and Granollers; and seaside towns, such as Blanes, Lloret de Mar, Arenys de Mar, Sitges and Palamós. Meanwhile, Catalonia saw more evictions than any other part of Spain last year in 2022, according to official data released also on Friday. Around 22% of all evictions in Spain last year took place in Catalonia, with 8,574. Most of them, 6,160, were the result of not paying the rent – with a rate of 79 cases per 100,000 inhabitants –, while 1,567 were executed after failing to pay the mortgage. The figures also show that squatters being evicted accounted for 657 of the 8,574 evictions in 2022. The transfer of the Rodalies commuter train network was part of a political deal between pro-independence Esquerra Republicana and Socialists to reelect Pedro Sánchez as Spanish PM back in November 2023 a significant step toward the transfer was taken requested that the Spanish cabinet withdraw part of the R1 network from the overall network and transfer it to regional authorities The transfer will begin with the R1 network between La Sagrera station in Barcelona and Maçanet-Massanes The management change will take place in 2025 before the Catalan rail operator Ifercat can fully manage the transferred commuter line the regional authorities and the Spanish rail operator Adif will have to jointly manage the lines "We'll need to strengthen Ifercat," sources of the territory ministry said regarding the public rail operator that will need more staff and a larger budget R1 will be the first line to be transferred, but according to the agreement signed between ERC and the Socialists the R2 South and R3 lines will follow.  Compared to the latter, R1, the Rodalies commuter line, is less complex to transfer because it does not share rails with regional, long-distance or freight train lines. "The transfer of the R1 is the first step towards a future zero-carbon public transport network," Sílvia Paneque, territory minister, said during a press conference on Tuesday. The entire transferred structure between Maçanet-Massanes and Bifurcació Sagrera includes 73 kilometers of tracks across 21 municipalities between Girona and Barcelona. The line has 22 train stations, 12 level crossings, eight tunnels, 514 underground corridors, 36 elevators, and seven escalators.  Esquerra Republicana's leader Oriol Junqueras has been one of the most vocal after the announcement by the Catalan government. "This is a measure that is part of the solution, but it is only one part of this solution," he said in an interview with the Spanish RTVE public broadcaster before adding that "more is needed." Esquerra's support for Sánchez's presidential bid continues to be crucial as the Spanish cabinet governs with a minority government in Congress. In Catalonia, the Catalan Socialist party requires the support of the left-wing party to pass its 2025 spending plan and other major legislation, as it also governs in the minority. "We await for the Socialists to comply with the agreements, but they say they need time to implement them. It does not make sense to reach new deals if the previous ones are still not fulfilled," he concluded. Far-left pro-independence CUP party criticized that the transfer is made "by parts." "It is difficult to understand that the transfer is not of the whole Rodalies commuter train network," Maria Pilar Castillejo, CUP MP, told journalists. The pro-union far-right Vox party rejected the transfer of the network. "Investments are very necessary. Our region and our country need to improve a lot, but this will not happen if we give up to the Catalan government, which does not know how to manage," spokesperson Joan Garriga said. Gerard Escaich Folch | Barcelona Connecting north to south and east to west Catalonia’s Rodalies train lines move millions of passengers every month travelers will enjoy free trips as the tickets will be fully subsidized by the Spanish government.  Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez made tickets for short and medium-distance trains run by state-owned operator Renfe free for four months.  Passengers will have to pay a €10 deposit for short-distance tickets and €20 for medium-distance ones These fees will be returned automatically four months later if tickets are used at least 16 times.  Catalans can travel across the territory using up to 15 different routes operated by Renfe All of them will be free allowing people to visit Barcelona or even travel to some of the other cities in Catalonia or in the neighboring regions of Aragon and Valencia Rodalies has nine different train lines that can bring users to places such as the southern beaches of Castelldefels It does not matter how long the journey takes as all trips will be free of charge.  To the north, beaches accessible by train include but are not limited to Sant Adrià de Besos, Badalona, Masnou, Premià de Mar, Arenys de Mar, Canet de Mar, and Blanes. Travelers will have to take the R1 train line in this case, the oldest one built in Catalonia that is currently in danger due to climate change.  But trains were not only built to go to the beach but also to stop in some of the biggest cities around the territory the R2N line also stops in El Prat de Llobregat another city south of the Catalan capital.  While the R2S has stations in Castelldefels Other big cities reachable by train include Ripoll and Puigcerdà (R3) in the northern mountains; as well as Vic (R3) Students going to the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) by Rodalies R7 will also benefit from the free ride The other six Renfe-operated train lines in Catalonia are named ‘Regionals’ and are medium-distance covering several important destinations in the territory from the northern town of Portbou on the coast right before the French border These lines are all those named ‘R’ and followed by a double-digit as opposed to the Rodalies ones that only have one number With these train lines, travelers will even be able to cross the French border and visit Cerbère for free with the R11 line those going by train can stop in some Costa Brava areas such as Figueres Other interesting spots include the largest amusement park in Catalonia and other major cities such as Tarragona (R14 Regional lines also have a Regional Express option reducing the number of stations the train stops at Renfe’s high-speed trains are not included in the subsidized tickets as some areas in Spain do have a price reduction in these services AVEs in Catalonia go from Figueres-Vilafant before crossing to the neighboring region of Aragon.  Despite the speed and making it possible to travel around the territory easily there are only five stations across Catalonia: aside from the northern one and the one in Lleida All public transport in Barcelona’s metropolitan area is combined, meaning one traveler can use the same ticket for bus This will complicate things for those who desire to travel for free during the last months of 2022 and live in Barcelona Rodalies will be the only transport service free of charge users taking the metro or the bus will still have to pay depending on the ticket they acquire.  It will only be possible to travel for free if you only ride Rodalies and then finish your commute by walking But if you need to take the metro or the bus you will still end up having to use a ticket not necessary to get a free ticket for half of your journey as the already reduced one will also be usable in Rodalies.  non-Barcelona residents will see a huge change in their travel expenses from September to December.  Rodalies will be free whether you use them for five minutes or for over two hours people living outside the first zone of the metropolitan area ticket fares will have cheaper journeys The Fire Department responded to 46 calls about the storm that descended upon Catalonia overnight.  Most of the incidents came from the metropolitan area and coastal region around Barcelona.  The most notable incident was the flooding of the N-2 highway in Santa Susanna. Emergency services received warning at 3.46 am and activated four crews as the road was completely flooded.  Civil Protection reported that due to the flood, the road was closed and a detour was been activated, while other roads were cut for a brief period because of landslides, but the situations have since been solved. Most of the calls to firefighters were because of flooding in homes or leaks.  According to the Fire Department, homes in Arenys de Mar, Premià de Mar, Cornellà, El Masnou, and Cabrera were attended to, but no injuries were reported.  The 112 emergency telephone has received a total of 75 calls, with the majority in the Barcelonès county.  The bulk of this morning's intense rains passed without any major incidents.  Some trees in the Catalan capital also fell, while there were reports of power outages in the city also.  During the night several storms hit the central coast and the Maresme county saw the most intense extreme weather.  According to data from Meteocat and Civil Protection, in Teià, 88.7 mm of rainfall was recorded.  Between 8 pm on Tuesday and the early hours of Wednesday, the Cabrils station accumulated 73.7 mm, the Prat de Llobregat station saw 58.1 mm, Barcelona's port station saw 42.2 mm, while Barcelona's Raval station recorded 33.4 mm.  On the contrary, there are stations, such as the Fabra Observatory in Barcelona, which did not record any rain. to ride donkeys and to discover the legacy of the Indianos Here's a 48-hour trip to Maresme that's ideal if you're going with kids you'll still have a great time with this itinerary Whether you want to ride a donkey or discover the Roman or Indiano past of the area you won't be hearing anyone complaining of being bored IN COLLABORATION WITH BARCELONA ÉS MOLT MÉS AND THE DIPUTACIÓ DE BARCELONA © Manel CuestaYour adventure begins by finding the road connecting Dosrius with Canyamars. Proof of this can be found in the former gas factory in Premià de Mar, home to the Printing Museum Spain’s only museum specialising in textile printing This morning's itinerary will give you a fascinating insight into the history of the technique the chemistry of the trade and the art of manual fabric printing It also explains how the printing process became industrialised completing a very educational visit which begins with the clothes of the ladies returning to Catalonia in the 18th century They were actually the trigger for the Industrial Revolution here moulds and original tools from each stage of the sector’s evolution When you leave the museum, we recommend taking a stroll around the town so you can look at the Sant Cristòfol Church, the Neoclassical buildings such as the Masia Ribas or the Noucentist constructions like Can Roure. What's more, in 2015 Premià de Mar opened its very own Roman Museum to exhibit the unearthed part of a singular octagonal building situated in a Roman villa Originally this would have served as a reception pavilion for someone high up on the social scale but later on it became a centre for wine production So that your dogs don't suffer so much from the heat and you don't suffer going to the
