"May Jesus bless you and may the Holy Virgin protect you," the message concludes
Founded in 1968 by Saint Josemaría Escrivá
the UNIV Congress serves as a platform for intellectual and spiritual exchange among students from around the world
themed “Citizens of our World,” draws more than 2,000 students from 25 countries and 32 universities
the students will engage in academic sessions
and will also take part in the Easter liturgies at St
Academic events are scheduled at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross

the way in which such a computationally advantageous network state for neural coding is achieved can differ substantially between modeling approaches; this challenge will be the focus of this manuscript
This non-exhaustive summary of few recent examples suggests the availability of a plethora of recurrent and feedforward network models for understanding the source of variability during cognitive processing and in the resting state. These configurations often differ at least in the level of detail of the computational units, in the connectivity structure and in the degree of balance between excitation and inhibition (Figure 1)
applying this approach is more problematic in recurrent circuits when coupling is not weak and is highly nonlinear; as is often the case in models
inferring which level of detail and architecture are mostly probably responsible for the neuronal variability phenomena is perhaps one of the major challenges for the next years
which possibly requires the development of novel theoretical tools for scrutinizing network behavior

Check out what Raul Gonzalez and David Balaguer had to say after Les Rouge et Bleu's 30-19 win over Créteil on Liqui Moly StarLigue Matchday 21
"It was a difficult game to approach because we played a physically demanding match in the EHF Champions League on Thursday
We didn't have much time to prepare for this game
The players were on the ball in attack and defence
We have to be satisfied with the result tonight because we're three points ahead of Nantes at the top of the standings
We have to keep up the pace and now focus on the return leg against Szeged."
There's always room for improvement in certain areas and we can correct a few mistakes
We have to take every match seriously and keep winning
and I'd like to thank the medical staff for all their efforts over the last few weeks."

ShareSaveLeadershipCMO NetworkHow Oriol Balaguer, Creator Of 'The Best Dessert In The World,' InnovatesByMichelle Greenwald
Brilliant pastry chefs and chocolatiers fascinate me
Oriol Balaguer was born into the profession
in his father’s pastry and chocolate shop in Barcelona
after having worked in the kitchen of former San Pellegrino #1 in the World Chef Ferran Adria
He has since won every award imaginable in his field
Best Gastronomy Shop in Madrid and Best Gastronomy Website in Spain
Oriol is always on the hunt for new inspirations
Great pastry chefs and chocolatiers employ a variety of skills in tandem: artistry and technique
In recent years the best have also become adept at social media
photography and videography (since everyone loves gorgeous food images)
and thoughtful timing of new item introductions that keeps fans interested in seeing the latest: akin to the practices of successful fashion and cosmetics brands
Oriol Balaguer: Instagram (@oriolbalaguerchocolates)
Other ideas are inspired by current events
soccer team win of Barcelona over Paris St.-Germain
The entire nation of Spain was incredibly excited
Oriol conceived the idea of commemorating the victory with a special
celebratory chocolate egg has 6 smaller eggs in the red and blue team colors
attached to represent the team's 6 goals
Oriol sketched the idea on the back of a receipt while he was visiting New York
and emailed it to his team back in Spain to develop a prototype
The dessert that won “Best Dessert in the World” is a chocolate cake of 8 textures:
the legendary “#1 in the World” Spanish chef he apprenticed under
Oriol likes discovering new concepts that are extendable in different directions
filled with a flavored truffle mousse on the top
The hollow bottom contains unexpected fillings
like the year-end version with 12 fresh grapes
traditionally eaten at midnight on New Year’s Eve in Spain
each signifying a month of the coming year
Oriol introduces a new “concept cake” each month
Concept cakes that develop a large fan base
become a regular part of his signature dessert collection
Oriol’s concept for merchandising pastries is to provide an environment like a jewelry store with glass cases on all sides
so the items can be viewed with space around them to better see and appreciate the artistry
Flavor Experimentation And Innovative Communication Of The Range
winning “Best Artisan Butter Croissant in Spain”
he took the challenge even further and imagined an international line
introducing a new country version each month
The Moroccan Croissant I tried was the most delicious croissant I've ever eaten: Rich
with whole dates on top and a luscious filling of date puree
The special croissant package includes the image of a globe
Regulars look forward to seeing what new flavor will debut each month
The way Oriol times the introduction of new products creates a sense of anticipation and discovery for his customers
• Pastries and chocolates inspired by current events such as the huge Barça soccer team win
• New collections twice a year (in the spring/summer and fall/winter)
It’s fun for customers and gives Oriol the opportunity and motivation to keep on innovating
Marketers can take away at least 6 significant lessons from the ways Oriol innovates:
force firms to never stop innovating (Oriol’s monthly concept cakes & international croissants
and two new pastry and chocolate collections a year)
Aside from keeping loyal fans coming back for more
a continuous stream of wow factor products creates more viral and Instagram opportunities and keeps creative teams inspired
• Involving more different senses helps products be more fully experienced
• Careful thought and creativity in packaging and merchandising
sets products apart and reinforces quality perceptions
•Going beyond typical geographic borders for inspiration opens a world of new ideas: Oriol’s croissants of the world have never been done before
• Current events can be a great source of inspiration
If the turnaround time to market is quick and pre-empts competitors
the innovation can immediately resonate and be highly viral
• Looking to other disciplines is another great source of inspiration: In Oriol’s case

again occupied the country in 1965–66 and snuffed out the revolt
many political activists supported the PRD or Bosch’s newly founded Dominican Liberation Party (Partido de la Liberación Dominicana; PLD)
was elected president in 2000 as the PRD candidate
The end of Mejía’s term was plagued by a declining economy and chronic power shortages
Mejía ran for a second term (after the constitution was altered to allow an incumbent to serve consecutive terms) but lost to Fernández
who took office in 2004 and who was reelected to a third term in 2008
In the run-up to the 2012 presidential election, Fernández was pressured by supporters to attempt to engineer a change to the constitution that would permit him to run for a consecutive term. He chose not to take that tack but instead threw his support to PLD colleague Danilo Medina
In capturing more than 50 percent of the vote (51 percent) in the first-round balloting in May
Medina avoided a runoff against the PRD candidate
and took over the executive office in August
Medina had given a “no corruption” pledge and promised to take on the chronically deficient electricity system and to improve education
He stood to benefit from a 2012 legislative election in which his party won majority control of both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies
Early in Medina’s second term his supporters began floating the idea that the constitution should be amended again to allow Medina to seek a third term
An internecine struggle developed within the PLD over the issue and led to Fernández’s departure from the party
though Medina ultimately chose not to pursue reelection
The Dominican Republic was among the Caribbean countries hit hardest by the global coronavirus pandemic and the disease caused by the virus
Criticism of Medina’s response to the resultant health crisis contributed to the PLD’s disappointing performance in the 2020 national election
which was postponed from May until July because of the pandemic
compared with about 37 percent for Gonzalo Castillo
running as the candidate of the Force of the People (Fuerza del Pueblo; FP) party
The PRM took control of the Senate by winning 19 seats
it fell just short of an absolute majority in the 190-seat Chamber of Deputies
Ellen Balaguer has created enormous impact in education
serving as a role model to countless Leeds students.
If you ask Ellen Balaguer what she’s most proud of in her philanthropic work

She was presented with the Leeds Alumni Service Award in 2012 for her extensive involvement with the school
including mentorship of students and supporting initiatives related to women in business
Her mentorship record is particularly impressive
Leeds is nationally recognized for its mentorship programs
but Balaguer has never been formally registered in the program
and she’s liable to leave with a half-dozen—or more—new protégés
helping them figure out their own journeys or sharing perspectives from my own career,” she said
“I joke sometimes that people my age say young people don’t want to work as hard as we did
I have so much confidence in today’s students to sustainably address our problems
and I look forward to the time when they are in charge.”
Balaguer led many strategic growth initiatives for the organization and facilitated countless complex global deals
She successfully turned around several distressed business units and helped drive significant growth in outsourcing and consulting
Her experience at CU was important preparation for her Accenture career
Balaguer got into business “by accident,” as she said
after taking an economics class in her first year: “I have often said that in my career
I may have used my psychology degree more than my business degree—even though when I was a college freshman
I would have told you business was the last career path I had in mind
I have come full circle and now wholeheartedly believe that business can be a primary source for good.”
The advantages her degree offered are a key reason she enthusiastically supports Leeds and other education-related causes
is a root solution for addressing our biggest problems,” she said
“I want to make education far more accessible for far more students—especially underrepresented students—to help them obtain the same advantages I had through my own great experience at CU.”
Balaguer has established scholarships to support economically and socially disadvantaged students
while also providing funding for programming and activities that support students who have been historically excluded from accessing educational opportunities
she sponsored a five-year pro bono project as part of a partnership between Accenture
the African Medical and Research Foundation and the Nursing Council of Kenya to educate 20,000 new registered nurses in Kenya
where the university system only had capacity to graduate 100 new RNs each year
“I try to bring all the elements of the leadership and strategy skills I built in my career to bear in the nonprofit world,” Balaguer said
“And it’s not always as different as it seems
The way investments work are somewhat different
hone and execute a strategy is very similar.”
That enthusiasm was what made Balaguer an easy candidate for Leeds to nominate
caring and thoughtful—all qualities that colleagues and contemporaries use to describe Ellen,” said Yonca Ertimur
“Ellen has given back so much to her alma mater
and the community has benefited immensely from her leadership.”
“Ellen’s achievements demonstrate that success in business can also mean success for society,” said Caryn Beck-Dudley
people and planet should inspire all of us to reorient our ideas about impactful leadership.”

The Espada has clearly been on a body sculpt workout
The Espada is a thoroughly modern and supremely playable offset that excels at high-gain
but has a whole lot more going on once you engage the coil-splits
Excellent high-gain tones and contemporary offset voicings
A high-quality instrument at a very fair price
A very shreddable 16” radius fingerboard and contoured neck
Clean tones in full-humbucking mode are not super-inspiring
But offsets were never exactly designed for more technically-demanding playing styles..
USA firm has spent the past six years equipping familiar outlines with ergonomic tweaks and contemporary features at attractive price points.
The Espada is Balaguer’s take on modernising the Jazz
which not only makes a dramatic visual impact
but also a comfortable resting place for your forearm during extended playing sessions.
This kind of performance-focused ethos is carried throughout the rest of the instrument: it’s in the satin-finished C-shaped neck
16” radius and the smooth-playing ebony fingerboard
There’s also a contoured heel for those dusty-end pyrotechnics
a through-body-stringing hardtail bridge and locking tuners.
The Espada reinvents the offset for a new generation
the Espada shoots for modern sounds in the tone department
too; Balaguer has equipped it with its highest-output own-brand humbuckers
These pickups thrive with a good high-gain amp or plugin
and all the pinched harmonics you can handle from the bridge ’bucker
the neck position is a little wooly for our tastes
aren’t much to write home about – but that’s where the handy coil-split comes in
Tugging on the tone control brightens up that neck position wonderfully
yielding fat single-coil tones that provide the perfect neutral platform for adding a liberal splash of stompboxes
the split sounds embody one of the Jazzmaster’s most enduring qualities
albeit with a higher output that also works well for classic rock tones
and can even handle some Strat-style middle-position funk
Besides reinventing the offset for a new generation
Balaguer has offered some serious value for money here
from the spec to the tones and even the heavily padded gigbag
which ranks among the best we’ve seen thrown in with a guitar
Aerospace Engineering student Spencer John has translated his lifelong love of space into a significant accomplishment: publishing a paper in an academic journal as an undergraduate student
“To be published as an undergrad makes me extremely proud,” said John
an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University senior
I’m incredibly thankful to all of the people involved with the paper
and for how fortunate I am to be at a college where this opportunity is available.”
The paper
which appeared in the journal Acta Astronautica earlier this month
presents research undertaken to help solve the problem of debris — such as defunct spacecraft and rocket bodies — in space
Although extensive efforts are under way to slow the accumulation of such debris
many studies have suggested a need for actively removing the largest abandoned objects orbiting the Earth
professor of Aerospace Engineering and also an author on the paper
said the Acta Astronautica paper looks at characterizing debris objects in orbit from an operational spacecraft
calculating the objects’ size and motion
so they can be safely removed to “maintain future access to orbital regimes of vital importance.”
a sensing method that employs pulsed laser light to measure distances
to construct a 3D model of the debris object
“and from there uses first principles to estimate rotational and translational motion and mass properties.”
Pol Fontdegloria Balaguer, another senior in Aerospace Engineering, is also an author on the published paper. He explains that Bevilacqua welcomed him into his ADAMUS (ADvanced Autonomous MUltiple Spacecraft) lab in the fall of 2021
increasing his level of responsibility over time
Bevilacqua has encouraged me to get involved in more and more research
and he has always recognized my work in the lab,” Fontegloria Balaguer said
adding that he did not anticipate being published while an undergraduate.
“I did not expect this work to be recognized so early in my career,” he said
Bevilacqua has ensured that my contributions to the team do not go unnoticed.”
Fontdegloria Balaguer, who will pursue a master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering with a concentration in Dynamics and Controls
said being involved in research at the ADAMUS lab has given him invaluable experience
“It gives me a perspective of group and work dynamics that cannot be taught in class,” he said
it has given me the opportunity of working with different hardware
it has also given me the opportunity to manage responsibility
and making decisions on how to conduct experimentation.”
John said being involved in the research has been immensely helpful to his development as an engineer
as he develops his design and CAD (computer-aided design) work so he can one day work as a designer for a rocket company
“Being involved in this research will help me immensely in my career path
to a point where I can’t even describe how much
I have been able to experience the fun part of engineering
working pieces of equipment,” John said
he had “vastly” broadened his knowledge by reading many other journal papers
learning about electrical engineering and how to wire robots
as well as learning how to work the interface of a Raspberry Pi computing and programming device
“I have grown in so many ways and would argue that my experience with research has prepared me better than almost any class,” John said

Casal Balaguer is a palace of the historic center of Palma
which now loses its household to be a public building
To value the times contained in the building
without taking physical distance with the historical stages that have shaped its qualities
allows us to act without departing from him: if observation do not distinguish times
transforming the building with the decision to re-occupying it
giving it a new era of longer life making it more sustainable
Having drawn the building for a long time let us decide on it
and in this sense the drawing gives us the confidence to work on what was found without physical and temporal distances with the story
in a continuous time which makes new interventions get incorporated appearing to our eyes as if they had already existed
a job that takes the strain existing and draw from it
The building is updated based on the previous one
a transformation that welcomes the new features
The effort is to make the ancient palace express its maximum spatial
because the new function gives us the freedom to draw a new project within the previous building
without the typical constraints of the use for which it was intended
allow us to stop seeing it as a building of domestic dimensions
and move on to assess their spatial and physical as the start of the new occupation qualities
Explore the unfinished condition of the existing building
imperfect result of the addition of steps in which ours is just one more
This dialogue of confidence in what we find
in a positive observation that values and respects as signs of an earlier occupation
giving the project a temporary sense which makes would not be possible to recognize from what time is this place

Casal Balaguer is a large noble house from the 14th century
refurbished in the 16th and extended in the 18th
the City Council decided to convert it into a cultural center
making the family house accessible to the whole city
For the new program it was necessary to access heretofore closed areas
and design a circulation suitable for the new public use
so that walking around that complex geometry created over the years is made easy
To achieve this the project brings together light and circulation: natural light traces the itinerary
marking out the transition from one area to another with changes in lighting
The project works to prevent the palace from losing that mystery and complexity that has accompanied its growth up to today
In the densely-knit historic center of Palma
becomes one of the main spaces of the building
with an outdoor stage and a lookout offering views of the city
the ground level is the area of access with the exhibition gallery and the bar-restaurant
The structural refurbishment on this floor recovers the original location of the courtyard
with a total view of the thirteen arches that seem to support the suspended house
The main floor becomes a house-museum and the top floor will have a new library
the print workshops of the Círculo de Bellas Artes
transforming the building by reoccupying it
and prolonging its life by making it more sustainable
the building is updated starting from the previous one
with a transformation that houses the new uses
The effort lies in making the old palace express the maximum spatial
because the new use grants freedom to trace a new building inside the previous one
looking into the qualities of the old structure
without the typical constraints of the use for which it was devoted
allows to stop seeing the building as one of domestic proportions
and to begin valuing its spatial and physical qualities as the starting point for the new use
Discovering the unfinished condition of the existing building makes one think that there will be more interventions
the result of an addition of phases where this is just another one
This dialogue is born from trust in what was already there
from a positive observation that values and respects it as sign of a prior occupation
giving the project a temporal sense where in the end it is impossible to recognize to which period it belongs
distributing sunlight in the different floors
Natural light serves as a circulation aid for visitors
applying specific solutions for each stretch of it

In the last several years, a number of prominent scientists have claimed that we have good scientific reason to believe that there’s no such thing as free will — that free will is an illusion
because it really seems like we have free will
It seems that what we do from moment to moment is determined by conscious decisions that we freely make
We need to look very closely at the arguments that these scientists are putting forward to determine whether they really give us good reason to abandon our belief in free will
it would behoove us to have a look at a much older argument against free will — an argument that’s been around for centuries
The older argument against free will is based on the assumption that determinism is true
Determinism is the view that every physical event is completely caused by prior events together with the laws of nature
it’s the view that every event has a cause that makes it happen in the one and only way that it could have happened
then as soon as the Big Bang took place 13 billion years ago
the entire history of the universe was already settled
Every event that’s ever occurred was already predetermined before it occurred
then everything you’ve ever done — every choice you’ve ever made — was already predetermined before our solar system even existed
then it has obvious implications for free will
Suppose that you’re in an ice cream parlor
trying to decide whether to order chocolate or vanilla ice cream
And suppose that when you get to the front of the line
Was this choice a product of your free will
then your choice was completely caused by prior events
The immediate causes of the decision were neural events that occurred in your brain just prior to your choice
then those neural events that caused your decision had physical causes as well; they were caused by even earlier events — events that occurred just before they did
We can follow this back to when you were a baby
then those first events were also caused by prior events
We can keep going back to events that occurred before you were even conceived
to events involving your mother and father and a bottle of Chianti
then it was already settled before you were born that you were going to order chocolate ice cream when you got to the front of the line
the same can be said about all of our decisions
and it seems to follow from this that human beings do not have free will
Let’s call this the classical argument against free will
It proceeds by assuming that determinism is true and arguing from there that we don’t have free will
There’s a big problem with the classical argument against free will
The idea behind the argument seems to be that determinism is just a commonsense truism
But it’s actually not a commonsense truism
One of the main lessons of 20th-century physics is that we can’t know by common sense
Determinism is a controversial hypothesis about the workings of the physical world
We could only know that it’s true by doing some high-level physics
Moreover — and this is another lesson of 20th-century physics — as of right now
we don’t have any good evidence for determinism
our best physical theories don’t answer the question of whether determinism is true
During the reign of classical physics (or Newtonian physics)
it was widely believed that determinism was true
But in the late 19th and early 20th centuries
physicists started to discover some problems with Newton’s theory
and it was eventually replaced with a new theory — quantum mechanics
But relativity theory isn’t relevant to the topic of free will.) Quantum mechanics has several strange and interesting features
but the one that’s relevant to free will is that this new theory contains laws that are probabilistic rather than deterministic
We can understand what this means very easily
deterministic laws of nature look like this:
and if you perform experiment E on that system
But quantum physics contains probabilistic laws that look like this:
then there are two different possible outcomes
there’s a 50 percent chance that you’ll get outcome O1 and a 50 percent chance that you’ll get outcome O2
It’s important to notice what follows from this
Now suppose that when we perform this experiment
suppose we ask the following question: “Why did we get outcome O1 instead of O2?” The important point to notice is that quantum mechanics doesn’t answer this question
It doesn’t give us any explanation at all for why we got outcome O1 instead of O2
it could be that nothing caused us to get result O1; it could be that this just happened
Einstein famously thought that this couldn’t be the whole story
You’ve probably heard that he once said that “God doesn’t play dice with the universe.” What he meant when he said this was that the fundamental laws of nature can’t be probabilistic
So Einstein thought that there had to be a hidden layer of reality
and that if we could find this hidden layer
we could get rid of the probabilistic laws of quantum mechanics and replace them with deterministic laws
if we could do this — if we could find this hidden layer of reality and these deterministic laws of nature — then we would be able to explain why we got outcome O1 instead of O2
But a lot of other physicists — most notably
Werner Heisenberg and Niels Bohr — disagreed with Einstein
They thought that the quantum layer of reality was the bottom layer
And they thought that the fundamental laws of nature — or at any rate
some of these laws — were probabilistic laws
then it means that at least some physical events aren’t deterministically caused by prior events
It means that some physical events just happen
then nothing caused us to get outcome O1 instead of O2; there was no reason why this happened; it just did
The debate between determinists like Einstein and indeterminists like Heisenberg and Bohr has never been settled
The debate between Einstein on the one hand and Heisenberg and Bohr on the other is crucially important to our discussion
then every physical event is predetermined — or in other words
not every event is predetermined by the past and the laws of nature; some things just happen
And here’s the really important point for us
We don’t have any good evidence for either view
Quantum mechanics is still our best theory of the subatomic world
but we just don’t know whether there’s another layer of reality
And so we don’t know whether all physical events are completely caused by prior events
we don’t know whether determinism or indeterminism is true
Future physicists might be able to settle this question
But now notice that if we don’t know whether determinism is true or false
then this completely undermines the classical argument against free will
That argument just assumed that determinism is true
But we now know that there is no good reason to believe this
The question of whether determinism is true is an open question for physicists
So the classical argument against free will is a failure — it doesn’t give us any good reason to conclude that we don’t have free will
Despite the failure of the classical argument
They still think there’s a powerful argument to be made against free will
Both of these arguments can be thought of as attempts to fix the classical argument
but they do this in completely different ways
The first new-and-improved argument against free will — which is a scientific argument — starts with the observation that it doesn’t matter whether the full-blown hypothesis of determinism is true because it doesn’t matter whether all events are predetermined by prior events
All that matters is whether our decisions are predetermined by prior events
And the central claim of the first new-and-improved argument against free will is that we have good evidence (from studies performed by psychologists and neuroscientists) for thinking that
our decisions are predetermined by prior events
The second new-and-improved argument against free will — which is a philosophical argument
not a scientific argument — relies on the claim that it doesn’t matter whether determinism is true because indeterminism is just as incompatible with free will as determinism is
The argument for this is based on the claim that if our decisions aren’t determined
And the central claim of the second new-and-improved argument against free will is that if our decisions occur randomly
and so they’re not the products of our free will
My own view is that neither of these new-and-improved arguments succeeds in showing that we don’t have free will
But it takes a lot of work to undermine these two arguments
In order to undermine the scientific argument
we need to explain why the relevant psychological and neuroscientific studies don’t in fact show that we don’t have free will
And in order to undermine the philosophical argument
we need to explain how a decision could be the product of someone’s free will — how the outcome of the decision could be under the given person’s control — even if the decision wasn’t caused by anything

Pete’s Luis Balaguer and Dan Casper met while they were still living in the Windy City
Balaguer moved to Chicago in 1976 from Puerto Rico while Casper
a self-described “good Midwestern boy,” relocated from Indiana in 1990
Though they were both active in the local LGBTQ scene
it took more than a decade in the same city for them to connect
said hello when they ran into each other at the bars
but they didn’t get to know each other until they were both volunteering for an International Mr
“That was the first time we really met and really spent time together,” Balaguer says
The couple kissed for the first time at an after party for the event
Casper’s BFF witnessed the kiss and told him afterwards
you guys were going to be together a long time
I always wondered what it was like when you see stars when you kiss someone
and I could tell you both absolutely saw stars.”
The funny thing is we both said we weren’t looking for anything serious and here we are 17 years later.”
They knew of each other from the local bar scene and each “different dimension” he got to know of Casper helped “seal the deal.”
Balaguer recalls inviting Casper to join him at a Human Rights Campaign gala in Chicago
It was the first formal event they attended together
“I remember that he came down in a tux and I though
He asked Casper to marry him on their one-year anniversary
But they waited seven years before having a wedding
“We were waiting for marriage equality,” Casper says
There was movement in the Illinois state government that indicated changes were happening in that area
what came out of it was a civil union,” he adds
They invited 125 of their friends and family for “a giant
amazing ceremony and reception,” Casper says
They planned to fill out the legal paperwork to get married as soon as it was allowed
they moved to Florida about seven years ago and they quickly fell in love with St
Casper’s real estate career brought the couple to the Tampa Bay area
Balaguer grew a career in health care staffing and launched a t-shirt company
selling his wares at Pride-related events and the Metro LGBT Welcome Center
When same-sex marriage was legalized at a federal level in 2015
they held off on legalizing their marriage
it would have been easy to check a box on a piece of paper to automatically convert it to a marriage
Casper says Florida didn’t recognize their civil union
They knew they’d have to head to the local courthouse to fill out a marriage license – which is what they did Oct
we went to the courthouse and got our marriage license,” he says
they felt that they’d been married for years
“I thought of it as just a legal matter that we’re dealing with and we were going about it really casually
I just put on some shorts when the courthouse opened to get our license
Our friends told us they could be there with us
it started to feel really different and less casual,” he says
“Never knowing what a courthouse wedding was I just thought I would sign a piece of paper and we’d be done.”
But they found that it was more formal than that
They were brought into a room to recite their vows in front of the courthouse clerk

Joe Balaguer stacks the specs high on the brand’s new-for-2023 Standard lineup
stainless steel frets and locking tuners on all instruments
Balaguer Guitars has announced a comprehensive refresh of its Standard Series electric guitars
giving the mid-priced range a host of premium specs
and players plenty of choice in the process
This is a range that has a bit of everything. There are the offset guitars that many of us first associate with a Joe Balaguer design, with the Espada offered as a regular six-string or a baritone guitar.
Standard Series models are fitted with locking tuners
and all come with a padded gigbag – which is always a good sign and not always a given
(Image credit: Balaguer Guitars)(Image credit: Balaguer Guitars)The Standard Espada is the guitar many of us would most readily associate with Balaguer
Balaguer has gone for a roasted maple fingerboard with black center dot inlay
We have a simple H/S pickup configuration of a a Feral ‘bucker at the bridge and an Austral single coil at the neck
all controlled via a three-way pickup selector and volume and tone knobs
with a push/pull coil split for added versatility
It wears the Shell Pink finish and white pearloid pickguard well
The Espada Baritone is constructed in a similar spirit but has a longer 27” scale compared to its sibling’s 25.5”
It has a pair of high-output Hypernova humbuckers – again
with coil-splits – and comes in gloss Metallic Silverburst finish.
(Image credit: Balaguer Guitars)(Image credit: Balaguer Guitars)The Thicket is an attractive looking T-style that’s offset at the waist
The dual-humbucker model is finished in Pastel Blue and has a tortoiseshell pickguard
The single-coil model is finished in gloss White and has a black ‘guard
the single-coil model mounts its bridge pickup in a three-saddle Tele-style bridge
Both pickups are the Austal single coils found on the six-string Espada

the Thicket models have solid alder bodies
Both have 25.5” scale lengths and a 16” fingerboard radius.
(Image credit: Balaguer Guitars)(Image credit: Balaguer Guitars)Now for the Diablo
which is really an after-dark design option for Balaguer
both equipped with a pair of splittable Hypernova humbuckers
The Diablo bodies are fashioned from solid mahogany with the figured maple veneer making the most of that see-through finish
The seven-string has the longer 27” scale length
As mentioned above, all are $1,099 and available now. See Balaguer Guitars for more details and pics
