ITV sitcom Benidorm is set to return for an 11th series — eight years after it was brutally axed
Channel bosses are in secret talks over a comeback for the award-winning series about Brits abroad
Favourites included Tim Healy’s cross-dressing bartender Les
played by Sheila Reid — who chain-smoked while driving around the resort on her mobility scooter
Sherrie Hewson, who played hotel manager Joyce Temple-Savage, has been approached — letting slip in a podcast: “Benidorm is coming back.”
A source said: “Benidorm was adored by millions when it was suddenly cancelled. Fans will be thrilled to hear ITV wants to bring it back

Eli Iserbyt and Lars van der Haar round out podium ahead of Wout van Aert
Nys attacks Michael Vanthourenhout (Pauwels Sauzen-Cibel Clementines)(Image credit: Getty Images)Van Aert on the move(Image credit: Getty Images)Thibau Nys (Baloise Glowi Lions) scored a solo win at the ninth round of the UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Benidorm
converting a final lap acceleration into his fifth victory of the 2024-25 season
It was the last lap of eight which proved the most decisive of the race
with the majority of the hour-long contest seeing a large group of favourites battling at the front
Nys and Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen-Cibel Clementines) moved clear midway through the lap before Nys launched
Iserbyt would eventually lead the chase and salvage second place at three seconds down, while the podium was rounded out by Lars van der Haar (Baloise Glowi Lions) ahead of Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease A Bike) and World Cup leader Michael Vanthourenhout (Pauwels Sauzen-Cibel Clementines)
"Everything is falling together in the right pieces
the right legs a the right moment," Nys said after the race
"I think Wout missed his start completely because he had to start quite far back
Thee pace never really dropped completely in the front group
so that made it really hard for him to come back and I think we really profited from that in the final
"Everyone knows you need to go up the last climb at full gas
It's an effort that suits me really good and when I'm in the right place on a course like this then
It was Niels Vandeputte (Alpecin-Deceuninck) who led the way at the very start
Spanish champion Felipe Orts (Ridley Racing)
The Spaniard took over midway through the lap while behind him lay a string of favourites
led by Pauwels Sauzen-Cibel Clementines pairing Iserbyt an Vanthourenhout
Van Aert was working his way through the field from his lower starting slot
There was no separation at the front heading into lap two
with Iserbyt leading Orts on the front and the biggest names strung out in single file behind as the top 20 packed into 10 seconds of separation
Van Aert was up to 11th by the end of the lap
with the big moves still yet to come during the eight-lap race
Lap three did bring some separation among the leaders
with the top 12 going clear by the end of the third lap
Orts and Vanthourenhout led the way ahead of Vandeputte
Baloise Glowi Lions duo Van der Haar and Pim Ronhaaar
Swiss champion Kevin Kuhn (Charles Liégeois Roastery) and French champion Clément Venturini (Arkéa-B&B Hotels)
The Pauwels Sauzen pairing retained control on the front on lap four
while at the rear Aerts and Kuhn would drop away
Vandeputte and Venturini at the rear of the 10-man selection
Lap five brought little change in the situation as Iserbyt and Vanthourenhout kept the pace up
however as the group swelled in the early stages of lap six
including Emiel Verstrynge (Crelan-Corendon)
who moved up to lead the way partway through the lap
40 minutes in and nearing the end of lap six
taking Iserbyt with him as the pair jumped away at the front
The pair built up a lead of seven seconds to start the penultimate lap as first Vandeputte and then Van Aert took up the chase ahead of a slimmed-down chase group which also included Nys
The seven-second lead evaporated once Van Aert started chasing
with the Belgian bringing the group across before Iserbyt and Vanthourenhout wrested control at the front once again
The eight leaders hit the final lap with Iserbyt on the front and Nieuwenhuis hanging at the rear as the likes of Venturini and Verstrynge lurked a handful of seconds further back
Iserbyt and Nys pushed on at the front in a mid-lap bid for victory
spurring Van Aert into action in the chase with Van der Haar and Vanthourenhout behind
The lead duo pulled out a small gap heading into the final big ramp
while just after that obstacle it was Nys who put in a stinging acceleration to push past Iserbyt and lead solo
The Belgian kept on the pressure in the latter stages of the final lap
ensuring that none of the select group behind could get back on to contest a closing sprint
showing his form two weeks ahead of the World Championships
while Iserbyt and Van der Haar led the chase group home
Home fans could celebrate a sixth place for Orts
Vanthourenhout continued in the World Cup lead heading into the final two rounds of the 2024-25 season
He lies on 231 points to second-placed Toon Aerts' 198

Fem Van Empel continues her Benidorm run of success
Thibau Nys and Fem van Empel sent warnings to their rivals two weeks before the world championships, with the duo victorious at the Benidorm World Cup on Sunday
Van Empel’s victory came down to a two-up sprint with World Cup leader Lucinda Brand
with Brand recovering from a slow start to do much of the driving in the second half of the race
but ultimately lacked the same punch in the final 100 meters
Nys’ victory Sunday was in ways reminiscent of the surging victories he clocked up on the road last year
The Belgian is capable of a superb turn of speed on short to medium climbs and he utilized that ability to perfection Sunday
He put in a huge surge the final time up the course’s road climb
opening a gap of several seconds and then maintaining that advantage to the finish
“Finally everything is slowly falling into the right place,” he said
“Everyone knows you have to go the last climb full gas
It is the effort that suits me really well
and when I am in the right place on a course like this I can finish it off.”
Van Aert also has a huge kick but was disadvantaged Sunday by having to start a long way back in the grid
That’s because he has done far fewer cyclocross races than his rivals
and left him with a lot of work to do to reach the front
Iserbyt and his Pauwels Sauzen – Cibel Clementines teammate Michael Vanthourenhout did all they could to make that task even tougher
Vanthourenhout is leading the World Cup and his teammate was willing to help him in that aim
In the beginning I kept the pace high for Michael
that he could be in a very good position as today was really important for his classification,” Iserbyt said
With Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) not competing Sunday
Van Aert was the biggest name on the start line
He chased hard and gradually passed rider after rider
but it wasn’t until the penultimate lap when he looked to be in the running for possible victory
He dragged the reduced group up to Iserbyt and Lars van der Haar (Baloise Glowi Lions) after they gained several seconds
Van Aert hit the front for the first time on the same road climb where Nys would ultimately make his big move
but Iserbyt and Vanthourenhout put in big attacks to stop him dictating the race
“I didn’t feel really fresh,” he said after the race
“It took really long for me to get to the front group
I had a bad start and there I felt already it wasn’t my day
So in the final laps I had to gamble for one good acceleration but Thibau was stronger on the final lap
“On the second last lap I had to close a gap to Iserbyt and Van der Haar already
From then on I didn’t have a clear plan any more
“But I started too far behind Thibau [the final time up the road climb – ed.] and I saw him going away
Nys recognized the difficulty for his big rival
“I think Wout missed his start completely because he had to start quite far back
The pace never really dropped completely in the front group
so that made it really hard for him to come back
“I think we profited from that in the final.”

Fem Van Empel (Visma-Lease a Bike) continued her unbeaten run in Benidorm
She landed victory for the third year in a row at the end of a fast
The Visma-Lease a Bike rider outsprinted Lucinda Brand (Baloise Glowi Lions) at the end of the six laps
with those two riders clearly the strongest
Marie Schreiber (Team SD Worx-Protime) was third
with Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease a Bike) fourth at four seconds and Blanka Vas (Team SD Worx-Protime) fifth
Van Empel pushed the pace from the start and while other riders did lead at times
with Brand in particular prominent in the second half of the race
The crowd is amazing here and with the little kids
During the start I was focused and I think I was in first and second position the whole race
Brand is known as being a powerful diesel and often has a slower start than the other riders
That left her under pressure when Van Empel pushed the pace early on
The World Cup leader was a long way down the line of riders
and was slightly delayed on lap three when she was squeezed between two others on a bend
She realized the danger of being so far back and fought her way to the front soon afterwards
From there she was the big threat to Van Empel
forcing the pace on several occasions and putting rivals such as Ceylin Alvarado (Alpecin-Deceuninck) into trouble
Schreiber was riding strongly and unleashed a big effort halfway around the final lap
Van Empel covered the move but the surge in pace saw Marianne Vos dropped
However the eight time world cyclocross champion clawed her way back into contention
Brand was the only rider able to stay with her and gave it everything
noting it was her first time on the podium in Benidorm
“Fem just could run a little faster over the barriers and then it is really hard to get over again,” she said
With just two rounds remaining Brand has a strong lead in the World Cup
with Van Empel on 234 and Zoe Bäckstedt (Canyon-SRAM Zondacrypto) on 194
Schreiber and Vas are on 188 and 183 respectively
She smiled when asked if it was looking good for the overall title of the World Cup
Vanthourenhout is also looking a clear favorite for the men’s competition
a solid advantage over Toon Aerts (Deschacht-Hens-FSP)
but his form seems to be on the up for the worlds

Loved ones of father-of-four Nathan Osman say Spanish authorities did not investigate attempts to use his bank cards the day after he died
The family of a father who died during a Benidorm holiday last year are flying to Spain as they ‘fight for answers’ about the hours before his death
Father-of-four Nathan Osman, 30, died after falling 200 metres off a remote cliff on the outskirts of Benidorm, less than a day after arriving and meeting friends in September, an inquest previously heard. But his family is still searching for answers as they say Spanish authorities failed to investigate attempts to use his bank cards the day after his death
Spanish authorities will meet with the family
who are worried others were involved in Mr Osman’s death
Mr Osman’s brother Lee Evans and sister Alannah were due to fly to Benidorm Sunday to speak to police and hand over evidence they have gathered themselves
The siblings said tracing Mr Osman’s known movements suggested he had been on a video call with a friend before his phone ran out of charge
The family also identified him on public CCTV on a promenade and that he did not appear to be significantly intoxicated
Owners of CCTV footage from other premises have said they will not hand over recordings without a request from the Spanish authorities
"We've been totally abandoned," Mr Evans told the BBC
"There's been zero investigation and we are fighting for answers."
Benidorm’s police have not yet responded to The Independent’s request for comment
arrived in Benidorm on 27 September for a last-minute trip with his friends
Less than 24 hours after arriving and spending time with his friends
he said he would walk back to his hotel room to rest because he was tired
His body was found later that day by an off-duty policeman at the foot of the cliff
Mr Evans said that his brother would not have gone alone to the remote location which was in the opposite direction to his hotel
adding that it would take an hour to walk there
"We strongly believe he was taken up there
whether it was by taxi or against his own will
And something has happened for him to be found where he was found."
Alannah said they received an “empty” police file in which the case was “closed”
Mr Osman’s father Jonathan added: "They've done nothing
It's just a total disregard for his life in every kind of way."
The family claim their repeated enquiries into the investigation’s progress has been met with silence
Not knowing about that last hour or two before his death
A GoFundMe page has been launched to help return Mr Osman to Wales for a funeral.
A British Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”

His wife had posted the urgent appeal to help find Jeff.
She shared: "My husband Jeff Duffield has been missing in Benidorm since 12.30 23/04/2025.

A force spokesperson said that the body belonged to a white male
They said at the time: "We can confirm that a body was found on a beach in Benidorm last night
"The individual has not been identified as there was no ID on his person."
Cops provided no further details at the time as they focused on trying to identify the body
A police source has since said: "There's nothing at this stage pointing to this tragic death being suspicious or the result of a crime."
The Sun understands the UK Foreign Office was not approached for assistance
The tragedy comes amid a surge in crime and gang activity on the Costa Blanca

petty theft and street crime have all seen notable increases
Benidorm has also earned an unfortunate nickname - "Narcos capital of the Costa Blanca" - due to a surge in drug crime
CCTV footage from the holiday hotspot has recently emerged showing visitors being stopped and pick-pocketed by women in Benidorm
The mugging is said to centre around an area outside the Magic Villa de Benidorm - which sits right next to the local tourist police station
British visitors have also reported violent encounters with security staff at venues

Brits are struggling to find food while holidaying in south-west Europe(Image: AFP via Getty Images)Starving Brits are struggling to find food in Benidorm amid the massive power outages across Europe
Portugal and France as major blackouts have left millions without access to electricity while supermarkets and banks have closed
“Not sure if you’ve seen the news… we’re in Benidorm. There’s a massive power outage,” said Brit tourist Dean Griffin in Benidorm
as he panned across to a barricaded supermarket while recording a video posted to Facebook
phone lines are down,” a woman’s voice can be heard in the background saying
Dean Griffin documented his experience out in Benidorm, Spain(Image: Facebook/DeanJ1002)Portuguese energy company REN (Rede Eletrica Nacional) has put out a statement saying: "due to extreme temperature variations in the interior or Spain, there were anomalous oscillations in the very high voltage lines (400 KV), a phenomenon known as 'induced atmospheric vibration'".
It added: "These oscillations caused synchronisation failures between the electrical systems, leading to successive disturbances across the interconnected European network."
Europe is in the grip of chaos as a spate of power outages plunges parts of Spain, Portugal and France into darkness, causing widespread mayhem and trapping a British woman in a lift for over an hour.
Madrid, Seville, Lisbon and the Brit-favourite hotspot Benidorm have all been hit hard, with blackouts leaving millions fumbling for their phone torches and candles. The usually buzzing bars of Benidorm are struggling to keep the fun going, unable to cool drinks, heat grub or process payments.
The roads of Benidorm were full of police cars and ambulances (Image: Facebook/DeanJ1002)One holidaymaker's sunny Spanish escapade took a claustrophobic turn when she was stuck in an elevator amidst soaring temperatures, venting her frustrations on Facebook by exclaiming: "We're stuck in a lift in Benidorm!".
She finally escaped the ordeal, later jubilantly posting: "YAY! We got rescued! Going for a very large drink now to calm the nerves".
The blackout also crippled major airports including Madrid's Barajas International Airport and Lisbon's Humberto Delgado, stalling operations and communications, while other European airports faced similar disruptions.
Transport networks in the region have ground to a halt, with many passengers stuck in metro tunnels in Madrid and Lisbon. Hospitals have also been plunged into darkness, forcing some to postpone operations.
Meanwhile, Jet2 has warned Brits heading to the region to expect delays and plan their journeys carefully. In a statement, the airline said: "We have been made aware of an electrical power outage affecting Mainland Spain and Portugal.
"It may take longer than normal to get to the airport due to this, so please ensure you leave plenty of time to reach the airport. Our teams are closely monitoring the impact of this, and should anything change, we will provide further updates here."

Benidorm witnessed a groundbreaking moment in urban air mobility
hosting the first simultaneous flight in Europe of an air taxi and drones in a real urban setting
with three U-Space service providers ensuring a safe and efficient operation
The skies over Poniente and Levante beaches became the stage for this pioneering aerial demonstration
coordinated by the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) as part of the European U-ELCOME project
an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for passenger transport developed by EHang
successfully flew alongside 12 drones performing a variety of simulated operations
The entire operation was monitored and managed through advanced digital platforms within the European U-space framework
ensuring flight safety and operational efficiency
A European Milestone in UAM This large-scale demonstration
is part of the U-ELCOME project (CEF-T-2021-SIMOBGEN-SESAR-DSDU-WORKS)
which brings together 51 partners from Spain
The goal of the project is to integrate and validate Europe's first U-space services
which will manage drone air traffic in urban environments
Several large-scale test flights are being conducted in Spain
Key Stakeholders Speak on the Future of Air Mobility Israel Quintanilla
Director of the Official Drone Commission at Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) and project coordinator for the Valencian region
highlighted the significance of this event: "The first urban flight of the EH216-S air taxi in Europe
is a crucial step towards Urban Air Mobility (UAM)
This milestone will accelerate the development of regulations
and infrastructure necessary to make air taxis a reality within this decade
Efficient airspace management for multi-drone flights will be key to success."
Benidorm has been selected as one of the first European cities to test urban drone applications and is on track to become a leader in this sector
emphasized the city’s commitment to aerial innovation: "In 2016
we became the first city in Spain to integrate drones into our police operations
we have continued to consolidate our leadership in this emerging sector
By hosting Europe’s first air taxi test flight
Benidorm is once again pioneering the future of urban air mobility." Victoria Jing Xiang

Head of Commercial & International Business Development at ENAIRE and leader of the Spanish cluster of U-ELCOME: "For the first time
we have safely operated multiple drones and an air taxi under a U-space digital system with several U-Space Service Providers (USSPs)
The integration of passenger transport air taxis into urban airspace must meet the same safety standards as commercial aviation
We are undergoing a major digital transformation that will enable unmanned air taxi operations alongside traditional aviation." Today's demonstration marks a major step toward the realization of urban air mobility in Europe
air taxis could soon become a common sight in the skies above our cities
The Road to Air Taxi Integration in Cities The U-ELCOME project
is a key initiative for the safe integration of drones into European urban environments using U-space services
The goal is to lay the groundwork for smarter
What remains before we see air taxis operating in cities
several challenges still need to be addressed
and public acceptance: A specific regulatory framework for air taxis is currently under development in Europe
such as vertiports (landing and takeoff zones for air taxis)
urban planning must adapt to accommodate this new mode of transport
Uspace air traffic management systems must ensure safe and coordinated drone flights and public perception and acceptance of drones and air taxis need to improve
Key Participants and Collaboration This aerial demonstration
led by Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV)
was made possible through public-private collaboration
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB)
National and local security forces, including Alicante’s National Police

A BRIT groom-to-be died in front of his family and friends after a suspected heart attack in Benidorm
told how the Brit from Halifax - who has not been named - suddenly fell backwards off a bar stool and hit his head on the ground
Luciano said: "I was doing CPR with the help of another customer
he was responsive for around 60 seconds and then there was nothing
"We tried for around 15 minutes before the ambulance arrived
then they took over and worked on him for another 45
"They gave him a shot of adrenaline and connected him to a machine
Luciano added: "The guy and his fiancé were due to get married in May
"The father said he had already had a heart attack in England five years ago when he was 24."
Holidaymaker Tracey Pilling was walking by the bar when the incident unfolded on March 22.
"We moved on as we felt it was inappropriate to stand and watch
but we were told his friends were all standing outside."
Tracey recalled searching the internet the next day to see if there were any reported updates
She appealed for any updates on a Benidorm forum
One witness responded to the post: "It was such a horrible and tragic thing to witness
"I can’t stop thinking about him and his wife-to-be
and I’m sure his friends and family said he had a young boy
Spain's National Police said: "We can confirm that a man suffered some type of medical problem and died at the scene
"He was treated by those present at the premises and then by the paramedics who responded to the call
"The medical causes of the death are unknown."
The Brit's shocking death came just days before Welsh engineer Jason Taylor vanished from Alicante airport
The man was found and reunited with his family after three days
But there are still a number of unanswered questions about the case
Spanish reports claimed he was found by an influencer but his family insisted "they are lying" and asked people to "ignore the rumours that will be going around."
The case was widely shared on social media, including TikTok pages dedicated to "true crime"
When asked what happened and whether Jason was okay
his wife Maria Taylor simply said: "It’s all good
The National Police did not confirm either version of events when asked how Jason was found
but said he was located in "good health"
The force said: "Jason was found near Alicante Airport. His family took him in. He was in good health

THE maker of hit British comedy series Benidorm confirmed that he is having talks with ITV about a new series of the show
He directly addressed Sherrie Hewson
the manager of the fictional hotel on the show
about rumours that she had been spreading about the show’s return
Derren said: “Sherrie does this rumour every couple of years
and Sherrie says that the show is coming back
she is hopeful because she loves the show as much as I do.”
The TV writer then goes on to basically confirm the rumour himself by saying: “If I say ITV have not commissioned a new Benidorm series
it is because ITV have not commissioned a new Benidorm series
Does it mean they might commission a new series in the near future
The writer then taunts those on the live by adding: “Have I been talking to ITV in the last few months
and I hope that gives you some idea of where we are.”
Actress and former Loose Women star Sherrie has previously been asked about the show’s return
admitting: “There is this thing that it’s coming back though
Last week The Sun revealed that channel bosses are in secret talks over a comeback for the award-winning series about Brits abroad, with hopes of reuniting the all-star cast.
but there’s major excitement building as early talks begin.”
The raunchy comedy aired on ITV for ten series from 2007
reaching an average audience of over 8 million viewers
The show was cancelled in 2018 as ratings steadily declined
Last year Derren seemed to shut down any notions of the show being rebooted in an interview with the Daily Star: “If we could all do like a one-off special
But his recent comments on Facebook seem to show that at least a special is being talked about with ITV
Viewers of the Facebook live revelled at Derren’s teasing comments
One user commented: “Really hope it comes back”
whilst another penned: “Please say yes it’s coming back.”
TRIBUTES have flooded in for a Brit dad who collapsed and died on his stag do in Benidorm
Oliver Holroyd, 29, was celebrating with his family and friends at the Funky Flamingo bar in the Spanish resort last month when he died
The dad-of-one from Halifax was due to get married to his fiancée Paige Whiteley in May
fiancée and friends have shared touching tributes on social media
Oliver's mum Karen wrote: "We miss you so so much Oliver Holroyd our beautiful boy
can’t wait until we are all back together."
"Nothing will be the same again but I promise you I will try my best for our little boy
"I hope you can see us everyday and I hope I'm making you proud
I'm so sorry this happened to you my darling
Oliver's cause of death has not been confirmed but a JustGiving page has been set up in his memory to raise money for the Stroke Association
Pal Ben Capper said: "I’m running the Leeds marathon in his honour."
Oliver collapsed suddenly while enjoying drinks at a bar on March 22
told how the Brit fell backwards off a bar stool and hit his head on the ground
"His friends were in shock for the first minute or so and then it hit them what was happening
Holidaymaker Tracey Pilling was walking by the bar when the incident unfolded
She said: "There were loads of people outside, we were just passing by, but there were several police cars and two ambulances… it was very sad
Tracey said she searched the internet the following day to see if there were any updates and posted on a Benidorm forum
Spain's National Police said at the time: "We can confirm that a man suffered some type of medical problem and died at the scene

thousands of British tourists now enjoy the festival in the Spanish hotspot
A bell rings for half past happy hour on Cheltenham festival eve in a city that has discarded time
Conventional clocks are required to determine the midday cut off between a cheap full English breakfast – available in a range of sizes
extra large – and an ever so slightly pricier one
to distinguish between upcoming performances from Michael Jackson
Just as they will again tomorrow; at least
But the abundance of British tourists who seek escape from the mundanities of home in Benidorm are not beholden to the usual restrictions of time
neon strip of Calle Gerona are as boisterously full on a Monday lunchtime as the early hours of a Friday morning
patrons habitually walloping punching machines and murdering Amy Winehouse songs from one dawn to the next at karaoke joints that proudly proclaim themselves open all day

Jason Taylor was last seen walking away from the Alicante-Elche airport after his boarding pass was rejected

A Welsh man who mysteriously vanished just before he was set to fly home from a stag do in Benidorm has been safely reunited with his family
Jason Taylor was due to board a flight from Alicante-Elche airport on Saturday morning after a trip to the popular Spanish resort with friends
became separated from the group after his boarding pass was rejected at the gate and he went to find help from airport staff
His disappearance sparked a massive social media campaign with his concerned family flying out to the party destination favoured by Britons to join the search
But later on Tuesday his aunt Robbie Fitzgerald posted on Facebook: “Jason has been found and is currently with family
Thank you all so much for helping get the word out there.”
Mr Taylor was last seen on CCTV spending around five minutes in the queue before walking away and leaving the airport
“This was the last we saw or heard from him
It is very unlike Jason and the family is worried sick
Jason was not ill or drunk or incapable,” Mr Edmunds wrote in an appeal on social media
His wife had said she had “no idea” why her husband left the airport and she thought he would have got lost after going for a walk to “clear his head”
“Thank you to everyone who shared the appeal.”
