a leading company in the design and manufacture of glass containers
have carried out an innovative pilot project to reuse biomass slag in the construction of 18.3 million glass bottles
the companies have reused 230 tons of biomass slag –a common term to refer to ashes
slag and dust– generated during the combustion process to produce renewable electricity at the Briviesca biomass plant in Burgos
Biomass slags have a high content of silica
one of the most widely used materials for the manufacture of glass
the use of biomass slag has made it possible to reduce the amount of silica sand used
as well as to replace part of the sodium carbonate
a compound traditionally used to reduce the melting point of the glass mixture
facilitating its manufacturing process and reducing its environmental footprint
numerous research tests have been carried out on the treatment of the slag
which have made it possible to maintain the strength and durability characteristics of conventional bottles
The slag treatment was carried out in Asturias
and the bottles were manufactured in the Basque Country
at Vidrala's Aiala Vidrio factory in Llodio
The reuse of biomass slag contributes to the goal of ACCIONA Energía to provide a second life to the waste and by-products derived from its activity
while promoting circular economy and reducing CO2 emissions from the construction process in an outstanding example of industrial symbiosis among its businesses
All ACCIONA Energía's biomass plants have the Bureau Veritas certification "Zero Waste Management (Minimization of waste to landfill)"
which promotes committed and appropriate management of waste to avoid landfill
this project boosts Vidrala's position as a leader in industrial sustainability
while promoting innovation and the circular economy
This project has been financed by CDTI (Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico y la Innovación)
from the Ministry of Science and Innovation

Poor Clares
The Catholic Church in Spain
Laura García de Viedma said the fraud allegation was ‘artificial’
Spanish police accused the excommunicated “abbess” of a monastery of Poor Clares of fraud after she sold 1.73kg of gold
Laura García de Viedma – formerly Sr Isabel of the Trinity – told a judge in Briviesca
that she was not guilty of fraud for selling the gold for €130,000 in January
She said the proceeds had paid for “things to do with the monastery”
an apparent reference to unpaid bills accumulated by the Poor Clares’ Belorado monastery near Burgos
10 nuns announced on social media they were leaving the Church because they no longer recognised the authority of Pope Francis
or any pope since Pius XII who died in 1958
they were excommunicated and chose an excommunicated priest and self-styled bishop
They have reportedly replaced him twice with other “bishops”
neither of whom are in communion with Rome
A judge has given the ex-nuns an eviction date of 10 June
although five elderly nuns who did not publicly leave the Church may remain
the Vatican entrusted the administration of Belorado to the Archbishop of Burgos Mario Iceta
who excommunicated de Rojas-Sánchez-Franco in 2019
He was alerted to the sale of the gold by police after García de Viedma told the purchasers she was the administrator of the monastery
She bought four kilograms of gold worth €250,000 in July and August 2020 with community money previously held in investment funds which were losing value due to the pandemic
the former abbess described the fraud accusation as “artificial”
there was no profit and there is no crime.”
Part of the sale of the gold is understood to have financed a new venture by three of the ex-nuns
dubbed “Spain’s first cloistered restaurant”
Three of the former Poor Clares – all of whom still wear habits – are now cooking
in the kitchens of Santa María de Chicu in Arriondas
“Sister” Myriam and “Sister” Alma offer a three-course set menu – including a choice of paella or Asturian bean stew
the nuns were famed for the manufacture of fine chocolates
They once operated an illegal golden retriever breeding parlour in the monastery
They have now bought land where they plan to resume breeding dogs and other animals

Schismatic nuns blame archbishop for financial ‘ruin’

ACCIONA and ACCIONA Energía have carried out an innovation pilot project to reuse biomass slag in the construction works of the A-68 Arrúbal – Navarrete highway
The road works are being carried out by ACCIONA’s Construction business
commissioned by the Ministry of Transportation
and the pilot was led by ACCIONA Energía’s Innovation department
The pilot has reused 1,500 tonnes of biomass slag –a common term to refer to boiler bottom ash– generated during the combustion process to produce renewable electricity at the Sangüesa biomass plant to replace natural excavated soil
The road section included a subbase of high-quality selected soil and a base of graded aggregates with a simple surface dressing on top
Biomass slag has successfully replaced selected soil of the subbase
providing a high bearing capacity and rigidity to the road
complying with all technical requirements that rules road construction in Spain
The pilot includes an environmental monitoring plan
This project follows preliminary pilots carried out to build access roads at the Celada Fusión wind farm
where ACCIONA Energía reused 352 tonnes of slag from the Briviesca biomass plant
where it reused 966 tonnes of slag from the Miajadas plant itself
These projects tested the load-bearing and self-cementing capacities of biomass slag and demonstrated its good mechanical and environmental performance
The reuse of biomass slag contributes to the goal of ACCIONA and ACCIONA Energía to provide a second life to the waste and by-products derived from its activity
Disney-Pixar's Lightyear film has become one of the latest casualties of censorship in Spain
among a string of other cases since the 28 ..
May elections created new PP and Vox-led municipalities
The animation film based on the Toy Story character Buzz
features a brief kiss on the lips between two female partners
It was banned by the town hall of Bezana in Cantabria in common with the United Arab Emirates
Saudi Arabia and more than ten other Muslim countries on its release last June
when quizzed by Antena3 journalist Susanna Griso
said Catholics considered it "was sexualising children at an early age"
A theatrical adaptation of Virginia Woolf's Orlando
commissioned by a PP-Ciudadanos administration in Valdemorillo
also fell victim to censorship once the PP signed a pact with Vox to run the town hall and the far-right party took over the Culture and Tourism department
the 1928-published novel explores issues of androgyny and features a male English nobleman poet
who undergoes a mysterious sex change and lives for more than 300 years as a woman
The theatre company's founder wrote: "We were told by phone that it was not to the councillor's liking that during the performance the male protagonist became a woman." Later the town hall claimed the decision not to host the play in the autumn
such as the cancellation of a Civil War-era play about a local Republican schoolteacher by the PP-led town of Briviesca in Burgos
a call for an end to censorship has been made
The Plataforma de Artes Libres issued an online statement supported by institutions such as the Centro Dramático Nacional
the Sociedad General de Autores y Editores and the Unión de Actores y Actrices
tweeted that without "culture there is no democracy"
More than 300 of Spain's leading cultural figures
including film director Pedro Almodóvar and actor Javier Bardem
have also signed a manifesto urging voters to go to the ballot boxes on 23 July and vote for progressive options
stated that the upcoming elections are "decisive" as they coincide with "a new conservative offensive
That is the nub of the matter: it is increasingly clear that
in order to gain power the Partido Popular is willing to accommodate the far-right's xenophobic agenda
Abascal wants Vox to lead the Ministry of Culture to halt the "kidnapping of culture by false elites"
