The author stayed as an invited guest of Virgin Red
and neither Son Bunyola nor its parent company had input in any part of this review
Despite being in the points and miles game for 5 years
there are still nice surprises to be had and plenty of things still to experience
Son Bunyola on the Spanish island of Mallorca is one of them
Redeeming Virgin Points for flights with Virgin Atlantic is something I’ve talked about many times before
but it was news to me that you can also use Virgin Points to stay at Virgin Limited Edition Hotels such as Son Bunyola
I was invited by Virgin Red to experience the hotel
which recently reopened in the summer of 2024 after being taken over by the Virgin Group
As this was a passion project of Richard Branson
I couldn’t wait to check it out for myself
Son Bunyola is 1 of just 9 exclusive Virgin Limited Edition properties
Booking isn’t quite as simple as making a search and redeeming your points. You can either call Virgin Limited Edition at 929-526-3034 or send your preferred dates to enquiriesusa@virginlimitededition.com
the entry-level Mountain View room costs between $500 and $1,200 per night
There’s a lot more to the Virgin Red loyalty program than meets the eye. Sign up today
and you could be staying at Son Bonyula on points before you know it
I’d highly recommend renting a car to drive the 40 minutes from Palma International Airport (PMI)
Taxis and Uber are readily available but are on the more expensive side
Given the resort’s location on the island’s jagged northwestern coastline and proximity to popular towns and villages like Deià
you’ll thank yourself for having a car and being able to do some exploring
you’ll likely want to make the most of exploring the surrounding breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site
which you can explore right from the finca (estate)
The only nonstop flight from North America to Palma is a seasonal service with United from Newark (EWR). Consider our guide to the best ways to fly to Spain with points and miles
I was confused as to why Google Maps said I hadn’t arrived at my destination
even though there were still about 5 minutes of driving left
That’s because the road then twisted and turned with dozens of hairpins until I finally reached the finca at the bottom of the valley
I took the photo below about three-quarters of the way down
He asked for the keys to my car and my luggage
which he said would be delivered to my room
I spent all of a few minutes at the reception desk
only to sign the usual forms and hand over a credit card for incidentals
I was invited to enjoy a welcome drink out on the patio
I was pleasantly surprised to be offered a drink of my choice rather than just the usual something simple like a house wine or beer
I felt very welcome as I soaked in the stunning surroundings of my home for the next 2 nights
The finca only has 29 rooms. The entry-level room is a Mountain View room, which goes for around $549 per night in low season. For larger groups, the hotel also offers 3 luxury villas
which range from $2,084 to $5,922 per night
the hotel treated me to a wonderful 2 nights in the 3-story Tower Suite
this would have cost around $2,745 per night
On the entry level was a homey living space with a large curved sofa
and a cabinet housing the minibar and snacks
I spent a cozy couple of hours here relaxing in front of the TV on my last night
Following the curved staircase up a level was the bedroom and bathroom
It was clear that a lot of planning went into the design of this circular room
The small space housed both the bedroom and the bathroom and had everything I needed without feeling cramped
I found a wardrobe and a double sink on the right side of the bed
The amenities I found at the sink were locally sourced with sustainability in mind
The handwash and body lotion — which both smelled delicious — could be found in Son Bunyola-branded refillable dispensers
A small basket underneath the sink contained additional amenities
such as a nail file and shower cap in sustainable cardboard packaging
The door to the lavatory was between the sink and the bathrobe
was so soft I wanted to take it home with me
as I tend to live out of my suitcase for stays of 2 nights or less
I’d love it if these just came as standard in every hotel room
there was enough space in the full-size wardrobe
which also housed a small set of drawers and a safe
the wardrobe also contained a Sonos speaker
should I have been unfortunate enough that the rain in Spain did not fall mainly on the plain (as the old British saying goes)
It came complete with powerful rainfall and handheld showerheads
and a view of the surrounding area of natural beauty
While we’re on the topic of sustainability
I love it when hotels replenish bedside water with glass bottles rather than plastic
Son Bunyola offers its guests a pair of traditional Mallorcan plimsols
The Son Buyola logo embossed onto the towels added even more of a touch of class
Branding was clearly of high importance when designing the finca
given that Virgin is a well-known brand the world over
Thanks to the almost complete darkness that could be achieved thanks to the room’s solid wood shutters
I slept soundly and felt incredibly well-rested both mornings
The cozy king-size bed also assisted in such heavenly slumber
On the top of the turret was a spacious terrace where I enjoyed my morning espresso
The hotel provides a bunch of complimentary daily activities
The latter just so happened to be on the itinerary on my first night
Sommelier Jaime gave us great insights into the making and flavors of local Mallorcan wines
I spent much of my time on the property thoroughly enjoying exploring the 810-acre grounds
which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site
The grounds stretch all the way down to the small cluster of buildings you can see in the photo below
The best way to get around is to use the complimentary mountain bikes
I also had a map of the vast estate that showed points of interest
Whether you hop on a bike or head out on foot
I implore you to follow the trail down to the beach
wild beach with pebbles and stones rather than sand
as there’s not a chiringuito (a beach bar) in sight
Even though the beach is accessible to the public
I ended up at Port d’es Canonge where I found a beach popular with paddleboarders
The descent to the beach was enough activity for the day
and they sent a buggy to pick me up from the first beach
With only a small number of rooms and lots of activities around the estate for guests to occupy themselves with
While doing laps in the 92-foot (28-meter) heated pool
I was blessed with stunning views of the coastline and Mediterranean Sea
I never had trouble finding a free sun lounger with its accompanying umbrella
It was blissful to relax and unwind by the pool with such an incredible backdrop
The infinity Jacuzzi at the end of the pool made for an even better spot to appreciate the views
In the corner is a little pool bar that serves up snacks and drinks throughout the day
I found a number of sun loungers away from the pool
There is also a large sun terrace area a level below the pool area
I went to check out what was on offer at the gym
You can imagine I was a tad disappointed when I clocked which building the gym was in
it is chock-full of equipment like exercise balls
and I still managed to get in a decent workout
Next to the gym is a beach volleyball court that could provide hours of fun for families or groups of friends
An honorary mention must go to the tennis court and spa
neither of which I got around to checking out during my stay
The property boasts 2 incredible restaurants
given its location in the middle of nowhere
I ate at the property both evenings and paid for food and drinks
Breakfast is served each morning at Sa Terrassa
The views over the Mediterranean from the terrace
presumably where the restaurant got its name
Should the weather not have been in my favor
In addition to a colorful continental breakfast spread
guests could choose from an à la carte menu
I love to see a huge selection of fresh fruit at a breakfast buffet — especially mango
I started each morning with a portion of my favorites
It was very easy to be tempted by the freshly baked cakes and cookies
These included some treats I’d never seen before and didn’t think to ask about
I guess they’re some kind of local Mallorcan delicacy
A mention also has to go to this display of pastries and muffins
They would’ve gone down perfectly with a dollop from the jams and spreads made locally in Sóller
I ordered my usual egg white omelet from the à la carte menu with a side of sourdough bread
The award-winning Sa Terrassa restaurant also came highly recommended for dinner
as much for the setting as for the dining experience
We shared a couple of portions of croquetas to start — a classic Spanish dish
After our waiter David said this classic Mallorcan pork dish was a must
and they were extremely happy with their choice
and several Aperol Spritz drinks (at $21 each)
the bill for 3 adults and 1 child came to $410
Given the amount of food we ordered and the quality of the dishes
I could have happily eaten at Sa Terassa on my second night
I popped into the restaurant earlier in the afternoon to reserve a table looking over the pool so I could enjoy the sunset
Watching the colors of the mountains change as the sun went down was magical
I’m not sure how well I managed to hide my shock at this portion of ceviche after thinking it was a main course
The combination of Peruvian flavors packed a punch but didn’t quite satisfy my hunger
I forwent my rule against no red meat after Niko
said the beef sliders were an absolute must
Even though I could appreciate just how great they tasted
they made me realize I hadn’t missed the taste of red meat and probably will continue not eating it
the only element of a hosted stay that could potentially be deemed biased is the service
from the quality of the food to the comfiness of the bed and perceived value for money
So when a hotel hosts me or knows I’m writing a review
I always pay extra attention to interactions between staff and other hotel guests to make sure I’m not receiving any special treatment
I can put my hand on my heart and say that each and every staff member I encountered displayed the highest level of customer service possible with all guests
Five-star service is as much about the little things as the grand gestures: simple guest-focused touches like having mosquito spray on hand at dinner
such as the hotel asking when I wanted to check out so they could take my luggage to the car and have it waiting for me at reception
Before driving back to Palma to return the rental car
I remember feeling a sense of profound relaxation and gratitude for what truly were 3 days of bliss
The word “paradise” often evokes the idea of white sand
and some remote location in the middle of the ocean
and I relate it more to a feeling than as an aesthetic
Son Bunyola is a unique version of paradise that you should add to your bucket list for your next visit to Europe
It’s “see you again soon” rather than “goodbye.”Featured Image Credit: Daniel Ross. All images credited to Daniel Ross unless otherwise noted.Frequently Asked QuestionsWhere is Son Bunyola

The finca sits at the heart of our 1,300 Son Bunyola estate and the main building traces back to the 16th century. However, a medieval defense tower is attached to the finca and it dates back to the 13th century. It’s incredible to see this structure alive again, and home to one of the property’s Tower Suites.
Over the years, we learnt how the site played an important agricultural role in the past – with its own olive, almond and citrus trees; and its own vineyard used throughout the 19th century. The team has worked hard to nurture this beautiful landscape, so that by 2024 our citrus, almonds and olive trees will bear fruit. We have also re-planted the 2.5-hectare vineyard to grow the local grape variety and re-produce our very own Malvasia wine from 2026. Wonderful.

To bring the story to life in a different way
he spoke passionately about expanding the kitchen garden and using the produce in new and exciting ways to elevate traditional dishes
one of our gardeners told us about a spring we didn’t know about on the estate
The team set to work clearing the overgrown area on the estate and
This will be a fruitful area for Samuel to develop an even larger and more magnificent vegetable garden
It was also brilliant to see Samuel working with Yassine Khalal at the Son Bunyola launch celebrations
Yassine is our delightful chef at Kasbah Tamadot (Virgin Limited Edition’s property in Morocco)
who has worked with us for many years and makes one of my favourite dishes – Chicken Tagine
it was fascinating to learn more about the people who have inhabited the estate over the years
we learnt how sailors from an Italian shipwreck were nursed back to health at Son Bunyola in 1917
and how some of our team today lived in the finca as children in the 1970s
80% of the team who work at the hotel are Spanish and 50% are from Mallorca
These numbers will only grow higher over time - adding another dimension to the finca’s story
Restoring this history and the beautiful surroundings of the estate also meant we were very focussed on sustainability and energy conservation
I was so impressed by the level of detail the team went to in this department
Hot water is pre-heated using energy collected from the air conditioning and refrigeration cooling systems
while the boiler is powered by recycled wood chippings
The hotel’s thermal insulation has also been upgraded and the building has its own water purification system
meaning that 100% of the wastewater is purified and reused to irrigate the gardens
There are no plastic bottles or straws to be seen
and the rooms are decorated with flowers picked from the estate
We also keep a number of different animals on the estate including chickens to produce eggs
I love how the story of the finca is carried through the interiors of the hotel too
Coordinated by the Mallorcan-based designers at Rialto Living and Gras Architects
every detail has been carefully considered to celebrate the finca’s history
From wall and floor tiles to the original staircase and a chapel alter - original features have been restored throughout
so you can really sense the history when you step inside
Honouring this heritage was always central to its restoration and the team also re-purposed original features wherever they could
wooden doors are now bespoke coffee tables in the rooms
which still houses the historic olive press is now also home to a tapas restaurant
Walking through the hotel, I was so happy to see a whole collection of items hand-made by artisans at the Eve Branson Foundation – a social enterprise set up by my mum
and embroidered napkins – the textiles have been beautifully hand-woven by women at the Tamgounssi Weaving Centre
The property works hand-in-hand with the foundation to train local Berber women in a variety of traditional Moroccan crafts
and provide them with a sustainable income and an understanding of entrepreneurship
It’s incredible to realise six artisan spent over two months making the bathmats
using careful needlework to loop and knot the yarn hundreds of times over
Meanwhile each rug took about eight days to weave onto a horizontal loom
It's so inspiring to look back at the history of Son Bunyola
Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard over the past two decades to keep this story alive
and to let people enjoy the estate for so many years to come

One of the best university supported annual events is the regular Undie Runs which students in the USA have been undertaking since around 2001
According to the Guinness Book of World Records a run that took place in Salt Lake City
Utah in 2011 had the most number of participants ever at 2,270
This concept has been picked up in Bunyola and for several years now a number of teams have taken part in an annual Underwear Run with the latest taking place on Saturday September 14
It’s really all quite tasteful with teams wearing matching underwear and rather than a race it’s an excuse to have a bit of fun and parade through the town to the amusement of the watching crowd
The former mayor of the municipality threw his support behind the concept and actually took part
wearing a specially designed pair of pants in the past

MallorcaRichard Branson returns to the Balearic island with his first hotel here for 20 years – a sustainably minded finca with unbeatable coast views and an intent to revive the area’s ecosystemAll listings featured on Condé Nast Traveller are independently selected by our editors
creating – like all the best hotels – a believable world of its own
goats jingle-jangling their bells and a solitary eagle riding the thermals
it’s easy to forget about the millions of visitors who descend on Mallorca every summer
This is the island’s rugged north-west coast and its history is etched on the landscape
from neolithic remains to the dry-stone walls and terraces built by the Moors to grow almonds and olives
and medieval watchtowers looking out to sea – the building boom of the 1960s
Son Bunyola occupies a natural amphitheatre
with an extensive terrace looking down over a small village to the bay below and the striking Sa Foradada rock formation: to reach this view try walking in a straight line through the hotel’s entrance
courtyard and bar and then out to a circular fountain – it’s a single-shot cinematic moment of pure hotel drama
Mostly Spanish, with many from Mallorca, the team are likeable and down to earth, working under the watchful eye of general manager Vincent Padioleau, who worked at La Residencia before Branson sold it to Belmond. One of the housekeeping staff is an accomplished flamenco dancer – he might be persuaded to show you a move or two.
One of the bedrooms – Room 1 – as been designed for wheelchair users, while there’s easy access to the restaurant and bar, and to the spa via a lift.
Yes, while there aren’t a lot of facilities for children there’s a smaller pool by the main one, and inflatable floats to paddle around on. You can take a buggy down to the tennis court, and a farm tour to meet the donkeys, peacocks and sheep – though it’s probably better suited for teens who will appreciate the bike trails around the estate and adventure sports in the area.
The original three villas, with private pools, have been updated and are still part of the estate; they can be self-catered although guests can eat in the hotel’s two restaurants. A fourth villa is set to be restored to contain 12 hotel suites, opening in 2025. The hotel spa is small but very accomplished, run by locally based Gaia Natural Products with a short menu of treatments using island oils.
Sir Richard Branson's collection of award-winning luxury hotels and retreats
is pleased to announce that its newest addition to the portfolio
and the three luxurious villas on its stunning 1,300-acre estate in Mallorca's Tramuntana Mountains
are set to re-open on 1st March 2024 and will remain open year-round
The highly anticipated Son Bunyola Hotel opened in June last year following a meticulous restoration project to sympathetically bring back to life a 16th century finca building at the heart of the Son Bunyola estate as a 27-bedroom small luxury hotel
The new hotel opened in June for the full summer season
guests will be welcomed all year-round to enjoy the mild Mallorcan climate in the winter months and take full advantage of all that the UNESCO World Heritage Site has to offer

Along the northern coastline of Mallorca lies the Serra de Tramuntana
sheer-sided mountain range that not only boasts the most spectacular scenery on the entire island
but some of the richest history in all the Balearics
There are caves and stone towers that bear traces of inhabitance from neolithic times
as well as the visible legacy of its booming medieval olive oil trade in the terraced farmlands that spill down the tumbling rock faces
as Mallorca transformed into a tourist capital throughout the late 20th century
this region—which is now UNESCO-protected—remained free of the overdevelopment that has affected other corners of the island
meaning a deeply atmospheric shroud of history still hangs over it
After building two private villas on the estate
Branson spent many years attempting to transform the central farmhouse
but after being repeatedly denied planning permission to do so
Branson began steadily building a portfolio of luxury resorts under the Virgin Limited Edition brand—spanning island retreats in the Caribbean
and a ski lodge in Switzerland—and when Son Bunyola came back on the market in 2015
the estate has been reborn as the sprawling getaway Branson always envisioned it could one day be
consisting of 26 bedrooms and three villas available for private rental
Photo: Adam SlamaIt’s not hard to see why Branson always thought of Son Bunyola as the one that got away. Driving to the Tramuntana from Palma airport
you’ll cross the flat suburban plains of the city’s outskirts before swooping up to the narrow roads that weave their way through its peaks
Once you’ve crested the top and begin winding your way down the side of the mountains that face out towards the Mediterranean
the great unveiling of the area’s epic scenery begins: red-bricked church spires poke up from the forest as clusters of perfectly preserved villages reveal themselves
green-and-gray topography of the mountain range rises beyond
defaultPhoto: Courtesy of Son BunyolaA few kilometers ahead of the picturesque village of Banyalbufar lies a turning that will take you through a set of imposing gates and down a road that wriggles its way towards the coastline
the breathtaking setting of Son Bunyola appears: Situated within an enormous bay
the gentle curvature of its undulating olive groves is set dramatically against the glittering azure of the Mediterranean
Right in the center of this picture postcard vista sits the estate’s crown jewel: a cream-colored finca
dating back to the 16th century and featuring two fortress-like turrets
shimmering like a mirage in the summer heat
Photo: Adam SlamaMake your way all the way up to its gates
and any illusions of having stepped back in time are quickly dispelled: The service here is as slick and efficient as it comes
You’ll be ushered through to the finca’s elegant inner courtyard—where you can have a seat on a cushioned rattan sofa surrounded by potted palms and colorful local ceramics—and then once you’ve completed the breezy check-in process
led out to the terrace for a welcome spritz or sangria
you’ll catch your first glimpse of the Slim Aarons-worthy 28-meter pool
fringed by striped garden parasols and with a waiter hovering in the far corner to serve sunbathing guests their afternoon refreshments
defaultPhoto: Courtesy of Son BunyolaWhen it comes time to check into your room or suite (assuming you’re able to pull yourself away from that view for a minute)
you’ll either be heading up to one of the rooms in the main house itself—all featuring unique layouts and filled with idiosyncratic architectural details; bonus points if you manage to snag the suite with a living area in the turret and private access to take in the views from the top—or over to the adjoining “tafona” wing
which houses the property’s historic olive press
The interiors channel a spirit of deluxe simplicity
with subtle nods to Mallorcan traditions (terracotta flooring
wooden window shutters) rendered sleeker and more contemporary
and a palette of deep blues and ochre reds that nods to the surrounding landscape; the emphasis here is firmly on bringing the outside in
If you choose to do nothing but laze on your bed in the middle of a baking hot afternoon
with just the sound of wind rustling through the olive trees and the distant bleat of a goat
that’s very much part of the intended experience
Photo: Adam SlamaAs delightful as all this might be—and that’s without even mentioning the small but perfectly formed spa
where you can enjoy massages and facials using local
organic products—the real magic of Son Bunyola lies in its spirit of adventure
(Branson is not exactly known for shying away from daredevil exploits
after all.) The Serra de Tramuntana is a hiker’s paradise
while both mountain bikes and e-bikes—depending on your threshold for burning thighs—are available for those looking to explore the 1,300-acre estate and beyond on wheels
If it’s something more leisurely you’re after
the staff will happily whizz you down in a golf buggy to the impossibly scenic tennis court for a pre-breakfast knock around
or share the timetable for the complimentary yoga sessions on the lawn overlooking the olive groves
or arrange paddleboarding classes down at the private beach to explore the coves and lagoons that dot the nearby shoreline
amid all these activities you’re likely to work up an appetite—an eventuality that the hotel very much has covered
Galdón’s farm-to-table approach means the culinary offerings are as fresh as they come
with the hotel’s star restaurant Sa Terrassa featuring a seasonal tasting menu that
included a gorgeously fragrant seafood paella and chargrilled Iberian pork
(Son Bunyola’s sustainability credentials also include zero plastics
recycling wastewater to irrigate the gardens
and an extensive tree replanting program.) A second restaurant serving tapas
along with a boutique selling local hand-crafted wares; it turns out that
in what is certainly the first instance anyone has heard of post-pandemic
the hotel was actually able to open ahead of schedule this summer
Photo: Adam SlamaEverything Son Bunyola has to offer
the opportunity to tune out from the world in this sleepy
spellbinding corner of the Mediterranean—is underlined by that view
the sun begins to disappear behind an eddy of evening cloud and the terrace is bathed in the honey-colored light so particular to this part of the world
why Branson always held out hope he might reclaim this slice of paradise: It may have been nearly three decades since he first came across the property
but its most exciting chapter is only just beginning

Richard Branson's latest luxury hotel, Son Bunyola Hotel and Villas, is ready to welcome visitors. It is one of a number of properties that sits within the Virgin Limited Edition portfolio
his personal selection of exceptional luxury travel experiences that encompass exclusive private islands and award-winning safari lodges worldwide
Located in the Tramuntana Mountains of Mallorca
it enjoys an unparalleled location and a rich historical past
The main finca dates from the 16th century and has been meticulously restored over two decades
showcasing intricate details such as floor tiles
Son Bunyola joins three further villas on the expansive 1,300-acre estate
plus three miles of sparkling Mediterranean coastline
Expect 26 impeccably styled rooms and suites
thoughtfully conceived by local interior designer GRAS Reynés Arquitecto
renowned for their Mallorcan charm and inviting ambience
showcase two stunning showcase suites with terraces
the hotel features two unique Tower Suites
one of which was once a medieval defense tower dating back to the 13th century
offering panoramic views of the mountains and sea
Rates at San Bunyola start from €600 per room per night on a bed and breakfast basis
Owner Richard Branson says: "Today marks a momentous day as we open our beautiful hotel
The north-west coast of Mallorca has always held a special place in my heart
ever since I visited as a young boy with my parents
and our team has taken great care in bringing it back to life
I truly believe we have secured the best and most unspoiled location on the island
with its three miles of pristine coastline set against the backdrop of the stunning Tramuntana Mountains
The hotel also offers a comprehensive wellness programme
allowing guests to partake in outdoor yoga sessions
walks around the UNESCO World Heritage Site
and book massages (there are only two treatment rooms
general manager of Son Bunyola Hotel and Villas
says: "This is such an exciting time as we introduce the first European hotel for Virgin Limited Edition
I couldn't be prouder of this passion project
which undoubtedly embodies all the values and experiences that Virgin Limited Edition is known for
set in one of Mallorca's most incredible locations
"Community has always been at the heart of our DNA
and we are grateful for the support we've received from our local partners
with over 80 per cent of our staff being Spanish
This is just the beginning for Son Bunyola
as we not only aim to create one of the finest luxury hotels in Mallorca but also revive the estate's agricultural side
which once flourished with farmland and vineyards
"We have already planted over 200 trees and anticipate producing our own olives and almonds by next year
The beautiful hotel sits on the same UNESCO world heritage site estate as the three villas we have there - Sa Terra Rotja
I’ve loved Mallorca ever since I was a little kid and first visited with my Mum and Dad
before falling in love with the Son Bunyola villas and estate
Virgin Limited Edition have made the villas so special
but there was another part of the estate we always wanted to restore – a 16th century finca nestled into the estate site
The finca has some of the highest protection levels given to historical buildings
so this meant years of meticulous planning
many historical and archaeological studies
Over 20 years after first setting eyes on the crumbling finca
it’s incredible to see it brought back to life
I spent a few days exploring the hotel and the estate
and having Spanish BBQ’s under the hot Spanish sun - with cicada’s humming in the air
as I truly believe it’s one of the best areas for cycling in the world
We weaved up and down steep hills and sharp corners
before stopping to explore another finca on the site that we’d like to develop (more on this soon)
I decided to take a short-cut which involved climbing across a fallen tree
and I think they loved going off the beaten track
I love how the whole Son Bunyola estate is open for everyone to enjoy
and the team even cut a hole in the fence so the neighbours can pick mushrooms on the property
We actually only have a fence so we can keep the sheep in
It's also the thoughtful details that make the place so special
16th century doors have been re-purposed as coffee tables
and traditional Mallorcan design features are perfectly paired with unique pieces of art – including a very special piece from my talented sister
there are 7,000 magnificent olive trees – some of which are up to 2,000 years old
Lindy’s beautiful drawing of this tree adds to the natural beauty of the estate so well
The hotel is also dotted with lovely décor made by Moroccan artisans training at the Eve Branson Foundation (a charity set up by my wonderful late mum)
There is a beautiful vegetable garden growing
which will be used in the kitchen and the team has planted hundreds of trees in the last few months
citrus and olives; and by 2026 we will have Malvasia wine
It also fills me with pride to see how Virgin Limited Edition embraces the local community
and tasting his delicious food was a real highlight too
Samuel is so passionate about local produce and a fork-to-table philosophy
Thank you once more to everyone who took so much care to bring this piece of Mallorcan history back to life. This is just the beginning for Son Bunyola and its wonderful team, and I cannot wait for our guests to experience the magic for themselves. Don’t forget to enter Virgin Red’s competition too!

there will be a programme of complimentary activities for guests to enjoy

Guests can also add on activities such as guided hiking and cycling (with the hotel’s bikes at the ready)
kayak tours from the estate’s unique beach location
For guests simply looking to switch off and relax
Its 28-metre azure swimming pool overlooks the estate’s vineyards and breath-taking views beyond to the famous Sa Foradada rock formation
home-from-home holiday experience can stay in one of the three luxurious villas on the estate
Two of the villas have been refurbished for 2024 in the same elegantly relaxed style of the hotel
which was designed by Palma-based Rialto Living
Each villa benefits from its own private pool

Richard Branson nearly gave up on his dream of turning a tired finca on the northern coast of Mallorca into an ultra-luxury hotel
after several years of fighting with local authorities over planning permissions
Virgin Limited Edition
Sir Richard Branson’s luxury collection of award-winning hotels and retreats
has announced the development of a luxury 28-key hotel on its Son Bunyola Estate in the Tramuntana region of Mallorca
consists of the restoration of a historic Finca (translating to rural land with an estate building) and surrounding landscape on the Son Bunyola Estate
part of the Virgin Limited Edition portfolio
Due to open in summer 2023 as the Son Bunyola Hotel
the development of the Finca will form an integral part of a 810-acre estate
positioned on a UNESCO World Heritage Site
which already occupies the collection’s three stand-alone luxury private villas
Development of the Finca began in June last year with a meticulous historical reconstruction project
focusing on the existing buildings and structures
using traditional and local materials at the core of the hotel’s design
Rialto Living’s combination of new design with existing historical elements such as wooden carpentry
wrought ironwork and lime rendering will help bring the hotel to life
while ensuring the Finca’s history is celebrated
The hotel will comprise the main Finca and the Tafona
which previously contained the historic olive press as well as several annexe buildings
including two showcase Tower Suites – one of which was originally a medieval defence tower built in the 15th century
The hotel will also offer two restaurants
a several external dining terraces and a new swimming pool with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and Mallorca’s famous Foradada
Sustainability is rooted at the heart of the conservation project
with a number of key initiatives being fundamental to the early stages of design
Hot water for the hotel will be pre-heated using energy collected from the air conditioning and refrigeration cooling systems; while the installation of a biomass boiler is to be powered by recycled wood chippings
The buildings thermal insulation has been upgraded and water is being collected and reused for irrigation
whilst the addition of a building management system will be introduced throughout the hotel to monitor and control lighting
air conditioning and power consumption within the property
“Celebrating and preserving the heritage of this important Mallorcan landmark has been at the very forefront of our restoration plans throughout and thanks to the fantastic work of Gras Architects
the Finca has very much been designed to enhance the incredible natural surroundings it is blessed with,” comments Jon Brown
Managing Director of Virgin Limited Edition
“This is of course combined with our commitment to sustainability
something which is ingrained in everything we do – from energy saving to rainwater harvesting and environmental protection – some of the fundamental values of the Virgin Limited Edition brand.”
Brown adds: “Very much in keeping with our collection’s home from home style
we are also delighted to be working with Mallorcan based interior designer
Known widely for their stunning residential designs
and are working to ensure the design of the hotel provides our guests with the same exceptional standards that Virgin Limited Edition are renowned for
alongside a welcome injection of beautiful Mallorcan charm.”

Sir Richard Branson's passion project has finally opened its doors
Olivia Emily checks into restored Mallorcan finca Son Bunyola Hotel & Villas
the latest marvel in Richard Branson’s luxurious Virgin Limited Edition collection
Read the C&TH Guide to Responsible Tourism
The journey to Son Bunyola is both breathtaking and nausea-inducing
You’ll have to stomach winding roads and tight bends
ascending the cliff before sinking dramatically back towards the coast
hiker and cyclists occasionally emerging from the wayside
pointing the way to the sea with their Storm Juliet-induced ragged branches
An occasional glimpse of the glistening ocean is all the more worth it as it swells into the coves on the north west Mallorcan coast
Son Bunyola sits between the towns of Banyalbufar and Son Coll
there’s a mediaeval defence tower dating back to the 13th century; now it houses stunning suites with sea and mountain views
It has been a working finca as recently as the 1970s
with agriculture firmly reflected in the terraced land with its interconnected waterways
Some of the Son Bunyola team lived here then as children while their parents farmed alfalfa
The land is thought to have been occupied for thousands of years with some buildings dating back to the 1500s, while others are brand spanking new – but you won’t be able to tell which is which. Richard Branson, the man behind this boutique hotel (and many others) which opened only in June
has taken great care to blend his developments in with the existing property
who has reimagined the estate with sensitivity and style
It’s 20 years in the making: two decades ago, Branson’s plans to transform Son Bunyola into a luxury hotel – akin to his world-famous La Residencia hotel in Deia
further up the coast – were foiled when the local authorities disagreed with his plans
investing his time and energy (and money) into the ultra exclusive Necker Island in the apt Virgin Islands
the luxurious Kenyan safari camp Mahali Mzuri
and the local authorities look likely to change their minds; Branson returns
you can find an ancient olive press in the spa and brick passages that collected olives travelling through to reach the press
as well as a stunning domed brick ceiling — all original
But you’ll also find a glimmering 28-metre infinity swimming pool flanked by an army of plush striped sun loungers
complete with the softest towels and cosy cushions which stretch round the corner into a pebble-pathed
secret garden style grassed area with olive trees
A posh white armchair of a lilo bobs along the pool’s serene surface
find legions of fledgling grape vines and olive trees
burgeoning to pull the finca back to its roots
Wine production is first recorded on the estate in 1275
when the finca housed 3,000 quartino bottles; Son Bunyola hopes to produce its own Malvasia wine again from 2026
It’s a 1,300 acre estate in total – with almond and citrus fruit trees
too – and you can spend hours winding down its paths
each of the 26 rooms and suites (each named for a bird or a tree) is occupied
The cavernous corridors – some featuring original floor tiles
walls bedecked in subtle marble and stone in natural tones
interrupted by vibrant artworks – are never busy
and the expansive rooms are well insulated from the sound of any passing footsteps
find a bunch of flowers picked onsite next to the King size bed flooded with lovely neutral throw pillows
carefully selected by local interior designer Rialto Living
linen and wood rule the day – pulling the sleekest of flat screen TVs down to earth – accompanied by subtle sea blues and greens
find sumptuous bath mats and rugs (produced by the Eve Branson foundation) to keep bare toes toasty warm as you ready yourself for the day in front of the vast his and her sinks
Unwind in the rain shower with cascading warming water from the biomass-fuelled boiler
water the plants in the hotel’s gardens
And on the bed itself find little hessian pouches of hot chocolate and olive leaf tea – just a taste of the many treats you’ll be gifted during your stay
all specially selected from local companies
or companies local to or supported by Branson’s other hotels
you’ll dine on Spanish executive chef Samuel G
Galdon’s exquisite cooking (who most recently has worked with Raymond Blanc at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons
but who cut his teeth at none other than Branson’s La Residencia)
and there are cute cove-style benches that jut out over the horizon – all untouched
Breakfast is a buffet laid out just inside
with tables dotted across what used to be a chapel
signified in the arched ceiling and original altar
a tapas restaurant occupying the old oil mill and retaining its original features
All of the delicious food is sourced as locally as possible – sometimes as nearby as the flourishing kitchen garden perched atop a hill opposite the hotel entrance
Slip on your complimentary espadrilles to explore the surrounding area – or maybe don something a little more practical
The sandy undulating landscape takes no prisoners
especially not your calves on the descent to that shimmering sea you’ve been admiring; you can traverse three miles of coastline and pebble beach
staying within Son Bunyola’s bounds the entire time
and hire kayaks to explore the clear waters
to explore the cliffs that are oh so famous among cyclists
Don’t worry: e-bikes can be rented through a local company connected with the hotel
You could also embark on a historical walk around the UNESCO site
or join an outdoor yoga class (you’ll find your own mat and block in your wardrobe)
cocooned by that (now much less nauseating) undulating landscape
Rooms at Son Bunyola start from 600 euros per night on a bed and breakfast basis

The long-awaited opening took place last month
marking the culmination of a journey that began decades ago
At the heart of the historic Son Bunyola Estate
This Mallorcan masterpiece dates back to the 16th century and has undergone a painstaking transformation into a 26-bedroom luxury hotel
harmoniously blending historical charm with contemporary elegance
Branson first purchased the entire Son Bunyola estate from the heirs of the Puig family in 1994
Peter Hudson took charge of the property and constructed two exquisite large villas
namely Sa Terra Rotja and Sa Punta De S'Aguila
he transformed the historic Son Balagueret finca into a third villa
Each of these three properties was built in harmony with the traditional style
Son Balagueret features a round turret with slit windows
once a lookout point dating back to the 15th century
Richard Branson sold Son Bunyola after facing difficulties in obtaining the necessary license for developing the finca
his love for Mallorca and Son Bunyola prompted him to repurchase the estate in 2015
driven by a strong determination to meticulously restore the finca to its former glory
a significant historical restoration and development project commenced on the main finca
Gras Architects oversaw the restoration process
ensuring the site's historical integrity was preserved
Mallorcan-based interior designer Rialto Living brought the interior spaces to life
blending old and new Mallorcan charm with the renowned home-from-home style that characterizes the Virgin Limited Edition collection
Every corner of the hotel exudes a sense of history
from the meticulously preserved original floor tiles to the repurposed historic oil press
the original altar now serves as the centerpiece in the Sa Terrassa restaurant
enhancing the dining experience with its fascinating historical significance
And each of the 26 rooms and suites at the Son Bunyola Hotel has been curated with meticulous attention to detail
offering guests an experience that immerses them in local history and refined elegance
Among the noteworthy accommodations are The Tafona
which occupies the site where the historic olive press once stood
The latter provides guests unparalleled panoramic vistas of the majestic mountains and the sparkling sea
one of the Tower Suites occupies a refurbished 13th-century Medieval defense tower
adding an extra layer of historic allure to the already captivating experience
It's even possible to spot Branson practicing for his well-known Necker Cup Tournament
"The northwest coast of Mallorca has long held a very special place in my heart since I first visited as a young boy with my mom and dad,” Branson said in a statement
“The historic finca on a UNESCO World Heritage site was waiting to be lovingly brought back to life
and the team has taken so much care to restore it.”

04:51pm EDTShareSaveCommentSon Bunyola is in the Spanish island of Mallorca
looks simple enough; a 26-room hotel housed in a 16th century finca plus three villas across a 1,300 acre estate framed by the Tramuntana mountains and the sea
it has taken a significantly long time for the serial entrepreneur to get it over the starting line
Branson first bought the Son Bunyola estate 25 years ago
The three villas on the estate opened six years ago but work on the hotel started in 2021
One of Son Bunyola's 27 rooms and suites
luxury is tempered with a groundedness; the floor of the courtyard is studded with stones
the furniture surrounding it is a gentle rattan
One of the first things you’ll see is a wide zinc bar lavishly stocked with spirits
It's family-friendly too though from float toys in the pool to cots and high chairs
an eau-de-nil green predominates alongside blues that dial down Mallorca’s vibrant skies to an early morning mist
The occasional geometric patterns are nods to Mallorca’s Moorish history
the striped awnings that are a tribute to shade and a summer serenity
despite Branson’s comments - are one of the most quietly - and consistently successful - parts of the Virgin group
(The exception is Mahali Mzuri tented safari tent in Kenya
a conservancy project which is owned in partnership.) All share a strong sense of place
a Morocco-based charity founded by Branson’s mother
The swimming pool at Son Bunyola is 28 meters long
A vast terrace gives panoramic views across the estate
A path leads to a rocky inlet where the footsure can go swimming
but the 28-meter pool with views of the terraces is a seductive draw
There are also hiking trails and cycle paths - a coastal path now links Son Bunyola with villages on either side of its land
While it has taken 30 years to create Son Bunyola
From the entrance gate to the main building are lines of newly planted vines of the native Malvasia Mallocan grape plus almond and 7,000 olive trees
which help keep olive trees healthy (and naturally fertilized) are also on order
The decor of Son Bunyola has been designed to feel welcoming and relaxed
human residents will be here year round too (although not this first winter)
Another ruined finca will provide twelve more suites when it opens in 2025
A vegetable garden has been started where a natural spring can nurture it
Welcome to Son Bunyola

which is already home to Virgin Limited Edition's collection of three luxury private villas

He adds: “Celebrating and preserving the heritage of this important Mallorcan landmark has been at the very forefront of our restoration plans throughout and thanks to the fantastic work of Gras Architects
the finca has very much been designed to enhance the incredible natural surroundings it is blessed with

The site of Sir Richard Branson’s newest resort dates back to the 16th century
Some destinations are arresting by virtue of their stunning locales
Others are easy to fall in love with because of a storied history
It’s less common to find a perfect blend of the two
but that’s precisely the allure of Son Bunyola
a resort by Sir Richard Branson on the northwest coast of Mallorca
The story of how it came to be in its current state is almost as enchanting as the property itself
British-born Branson fell in love with this part of the world on regular trips with his parents
After becoming an accomplished hotelier and adventurer
he purchased a 1,300-acre historic property in 1994
The estate was once a strategic defense point and a productive farm with centuries old buildings that had fallen into disrepair
the entirety of which is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site
down to the crops grown and the type of gravel used
Branson worked for years to navigate the approvals to develop the resort of his dreams and restore the fast-deteriorating structures
The idea of the resort wouldn’t let him go
he tapped a team of Mallorca-based architects
an archaeologist and interior designers to bring the estate
and I was lucky to be one of the first guests to visit
When I arrived after 15 hours of traveling from Atlanta
all I could think about was the prospect of a nap
when my car turned down the drive to reveal panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the stately
Twenty-six guest rooms and suites are built into the existing structures
some of which in the finca (traditional farmhouse) date back to the 1500s
I settled into the massive 805-square foot falcó (falcon) suite
a bathroom with soaking tub and rain shower
a living/dining room and two terraces overlooking the resort’s 92- foot swimming pool
Each of the accommodations is adorned with oneof- a-kind artwork
and stocked with treats made on the island
I could have easily spent three days luxuriating in my suite
I joined a local guide on a hike around the property
learning about previous (as in centuries ago) residents and skirmishes that necessitated the defense towers that have become some of the resort’s premier suites
a paddleboard tour took me up the pristine coastline for a view of the hotel from an entirely different vantage point
One off-property highlight: renting a 40-foot yacht in nearby Sóller
We swam under a giant rock formation to float in a cathedral-like open space in the center and dropped anchor for lunch at Sa Foradada
a clifftop restaurant only accessible by boat or a lengthy hike
a massage therapist kneaded out my travel induced kinks with local almond oil in a spa room with a domed ceiling that once housed the farmhouse’s massive oven centuries ago
Now the modernized kitchen turns out flawless Spanish fare at two on property restaurants
both of which have sweeping views of the landscape
Every element of the resort is impossibly thoughtful
And it’s easy to see why this piece of paradise captured the heart of a man

They say good things come to those who wait, so it’s no wonder Sir Richard Branson is looking so pleased with himself. He has just unveiled the latest jewel in his empire – a head-turning hotel in Mallorca born from an extraordinary 25-year quest to make a dream come true
A restored 16th century finca set amongst 1,300 acres on the island’s scenic and unspoilt north-west coast
Son Bunyola is a real moment to savour for Branson
who first fell for Mallorca’s charm during holidays with his parents as a small boy
Fast forward several ground-breaking – and lucrative – decades. Having conquered the record business and the skies, and even buying his own private Caribbean hideaway, the Virgin boss became besotted with the idea of opening a hotel on the island that had been the backdrop to so many magical memories
stumbling upon a sprawling estate located on sublime stretch of shoreline backed by the rugged Tramuntana Mountains
a working olive press before falling into disrepair
I knew I wanted to bring it back to life and ensure this chapter of history wouldn’t be closed for good,” says Branson
But failing to acquire the necessary permissions to operate it as a hotel forced him to sell it eight years later
only to buy it back in 2015 when work began in earnest to transform the estate into a retreat fit for a billionaire
As Son Bunyola finally welcomes its first guests
there’s a big question hanging in the lavender-infused air: has this passion project
Visible from the iron gates at the very top of the long and vertiginous driveway
there’s a sense of occasion upon arriving at Son Bunyola
Terraced hillsides populated with citrus trees and olive groves tumble down the hillsides
but the real star is the beautifully restored finca
which looms larger and more impressive beyond each hairpin bend
Up close it’s no less striking: a quiet and shady cobbled courtyard awaits beyond the entrance way that leads out to a sweeping sun-filled wraparound terrace
with mountain and sea views lifted straight from a Disney film
There’s everything you’d expect from a five-star property
from spa treatments using local beauty products to fine dining all delivered by a mostly Mallorcan team
This subtle approach to service – guests are not fawned over
instead encouraged to treat the estate as their home from home – creates a cosy feeling of peace and calm
Something else that can be felt at every turn is the weight of history
While 21st century luxury touches are very much present
Many of the finca’s original features remain
and the 13th century medieval defence tower which now houses two of the hotel’s 26 rooms and suites
expect natural materials (terracotta flooring
exposed beams and chic white cotton drapes) set against a soothing and muted colour scheme that draws inspiration from Mallorca itself
And with not a shred of single-use plastic in sight and all wastewater treated and reused to keep the gardens looking lush
the hotel is taking its responsibilities seriously
there’s style as well as substance thanks to the bright and bold art dotted around and the extremely Instagramable swimming pool that stretches for 28-metres along the entire side of the hotel
A stone’s throw away is the super-sized hot tub strategically placed to make the most of the coastal views
Guests can expect to dine on some of the freshest and tastiest dishes this side of Magaluf. Heading up the hotel’s culinary offering is Spanish executive chef Samuel G. Galdon, whose close personal connection to Mallorca is clear to see. Having worked at some of the island’s best restaurants – including Michelin-starred Es Raco d’es Teix – he has also shared kitchens with the likes of Raymond Blanc and Eckart Witzigmann and brings a refreshingly contemporary approach to a classic cuisine.
The hotel’s two restaurants offer different dining experiences, from breezy lunches of organic sharing platters to evenings spent enjoying barbequed lobster, decadent seven-course tasting menus and delicate dishes such as mussels and samphire.
Best of all, much of the produce served – from the honey to the wild herbs – is sourced directly from the estate’s gardens and orchards and there are plans to start producing Malvasia wine, a tipple made from a native grape that was first sipped in 1275.
Entering couldn’t be easier; simply make sure you’re signed up to Virgin Red, answer the question and you could be one of the lucky winners. And even if you don’t win the grand prize, 50 runner ups will score themselves 20,000 Virgin Points. Point well and truly made.

A centuries-old manor-type farmhouse on the storied Spanish island of Mallorca is now the Son Bunyola Hotel & Villas
recently opened to guests as part of Richard Branson’s Virgin Limited Edition collection
The 1,300-acre property was reportedly sold by Branson back in 2002
only to be purchased back by the magnate in 2015
it seems he’s been busy turning it into the latest resort in his prestigious collection
giving guests easy access to a UNESCO World Heritage site

The building’s historic structures echo the property’s medieval history
with most of the hotel centred around the 13th-century defence tower
Three of the building’s most impressive areas were turned into grand villas back when Branson first owned the property
taking advantage of the lush surroundings with views of the state’s farmland
and vineyard.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-ArticlesPOS4'); });
The unique aesthetic comes from native Mallorcan stone
which are used to support the estate’s old structures
Most impressive are the hotel’s two Tower Suites
one of which is the entire round tower that dates back to the 1930s
it has a rooftop relaxation area that looks like it’s been ripped from the set of a classic Hollywood film
Amenities for Son Bunyola Hotel & Villas include a 28-metre outdoor swimming pool
a bakery – using the surrounding land and a restaurant with a hyperlocal approach – as well as paddleboards and kayaks on the nearby beach
There even seems to be an area for pickleball

BUSINESS mogul Sir Richard Branson has declared a Spanish beach to be "one of the most magical places in the world" and one of his favourite holiday destinations
Given that he owns an airline and a private island
it's fair to assume the magnate has a fair bit of experience of travel
Despite his opportunities to travel far and wide and take in exotic locations all over the world, it's a bay in Mallorca that he says has a special place in his heart
In fact, Branson liked Son Bunyola beach so much that he decided to buy some villas overlooking the beach and transform them into a Virgin luxury resort
SUN READER HOLIDAY TIPS: Give us your best tip for an underrated UK place and you could win a £100 Amazon voucher
The resort opened in June last year on top of a cliff overlooking the north west coast of the island, among the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Tramuntana Mountains
Opening the hotel was something of a passion project for Branson
Along with a picture of the resort, he wrote on his Instagram: "Son Bunyola is one of the most magical places in the world.
"I’ve been coming to Mallorca since I was a young boy, so it will always have a special place in my heart.
"This is what led me to buy the Son Bunyola villas and transforming it into a Virgin Limited Edition property."
which Branson wanted to transform for more than 20 years
He was finally given the licence to develop it a few years ago and managed to open it last summer
he doesn't want the resort to just be a place for sunny getaways
He continued: "There was another part of the estate I was always yearning to restore – a 16th century finca nestled into the estate site
we transformed the finca into the most beautiful hotel
"People loved it so much that we decided to keep it open year-round, as Mallorca has the most wonderful hiking, cycling, and sun-drenched scenery for a winter getaway."
One of the hotel's finest assets is its view over the Balearic Sea
And Branson believes it's also home to one of the finest beaches in the world
He told Mail Online: “Son Bunyola has crystal-clear waters and authentic Mallorcan charm
"It’s positioned on the island’s north-west coast in the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage-listed Tramuntana Mountains
"The seclusion and tranquillity transports you to a world far removed from the everyday."
The Virgin website also suggests it's a great family friendly beach too
adding: "A postcard-perfect pebble beach is just a short stroll away from the resort
shallow waters and the hotel can even arrange kayaking or yachting excursions for more adventurous swimmers."
Son Bunyola isn't the only hidden beach that people have raved about in Spain
On a list, published by travel specialists Lonely Planet, Torimibia bay in Llanes was praised for its warm waters and beach bar
The Asturias region is considered one of the prettiest parts of Spain, with locals often choosing to head there, to villages like Cudillero
One person said that the beach looked like it was "straight out of a postcard - absolutely stunning" on TripAdvisor
A small Balearic island just south of Ibiza called Formentera has some of the best beaches in the world
They're so exotic-looking that they were even used in Bounty adverts to double as the Caribbean
What's more, celebrities like Bob Marley and Leondaro DiCaprio have visited the island as a place to get away from busier holiday hotspots
Meanwhile, these are the six best cities for tourists to visit in Europe in 2024
And these are the new rules set to come in for Brits heading to Europe later this year

With their ‘Three Strategies’ scheme Javier Alejo Hernández Ayllón
and Javier de Andrés de Vicente have won the ideas competition called by the Consell de Mallorca’s Sustainability and Environment Department
in collaboration with the Balearic Islands Institute of Architects
for the construction of a mountain shelter and agroforestry training school in the Finca de Raixa estate of the Majorcan municipality of Buñola
Conceived as a new chapter of the history of the Possessió de Raixa
the project addresses new needs (functional
energy…) while respecting the heritage value of the complex and the landscape around it
It is based on three complementary strategies: refurbishment
and textures of the complex through local building techniques
and removing partitions and poor-quality additions in the process of consolidating structures; reconstruction
with the reinstalling of those missing pieces that can upgrade the premises; and reconfiguration
paying attention to accessibility requirements
to provide a shelter for 50 hikers in the houses of the owner
and an agroforestry training center in linearly interconnected constructions leading to the wooded zone on the north and the garden along the way
The area to refurbish covers about 1,530 square meters
the budget for execution is estimated by the Consell de Mallorca at 3,600,000 euros maximum
