Cup final referee in tears over critical Real Madrid TV video
Real Madrid have reacted angrily to a news conference where the referee for Saturday's Copa del Rey final broke down in tears at the pressure the club's TV channel has put officials under
they denied reports they were considering pulling out of Saturday's Clasico encounter against Barcelona in Seville (21:00 BST kick-off)
become the latest official to be attacked on Real Madrid TV this season
A club video pointed out the win percentages of Barca and Real when the Spaniard has taken charge of their games
the fact he has never refereed in the Champions League or Fifa tournaments
and supposed mistakes the 39-year-old has made
An emotional De Burgos Bengoetxea said: "When a child of yours goes to school and there are kids telling him that his father is a 'thief' and comes home crying
who will be the video assistant referee (VAR) for the final
But the 15-time European champions later refused to take part in pre-match activities
boycotting an open training session and press conference
The Spanish football federation (RFEF) said: "Real Madrid told the RFEF they will not take part in the press conference or the official training session looking forward to the [final]."
Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea has previously refereed Clasicos
Real Madrid released two critical statements
the second of which read: "In light of the rumours that have emerged in recent hours
Real Madrid CF announces that our team has never considered withdrawing from tomorrow's final
"Our club understands that the unfortunate and inappropriate statements made by the referees designated for this match
cannot taint a sporting event of global significance that will be watched by hundreds of millions of people
and out of respect for all the fans who are planning to travel to Seville
and all those who are already in the Andalusian capital
"Real Madrid believes that the values of football must prevail
despite the hostility and animosity that have been manifested once again today against our club by the referees appointed for the final."
Back in February, Real Madrid wrote a formal letter of complaint to the Spanish FA (RFEF) and Spain's High Council for Sports saying Spanish refereeing was "rigged" and "completely discredited"
De Burgos Bengoetxea said: "It's not right what we are going through
"Everyone should reflect about where we want to go
about what we want from sport and from football."
who also officiates in Uefa club and international competitions
has previously taken charge of Clasico encounters
VAR Fuertes added: "Have no doubt that we are going to have to start taking much more serious measures than we are taking
"We will not continue to allow what is happening
because we are not going to continue to bear what we are putting up with."
Barcelona boss Hansi Flick later echoed the call for action when speaking to the media
it's only a sport," said the German
It is our responsibility to protect not only the players
"It's not nice that happened today
sometimes on the pitch there are some decisions that are about emotion but after the match
La Liga president Javier Tebas said Real Madrid had "lost their head"
Later that month the RFEF condemned the "repulsive" abuse suffered by referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero after he sent off Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham against Osasuna

prompting uncertainty that the game would go ahead
A statement from Madrid finally confirmed that they would play after 10pm on Friday night
A previous statement from Madrid had demanded that the Spanish football federation (RFEF) take action after comments made by the referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea in the buildup to the game
That came after Madrid had refused to show up for the pre-match press conference
training session or the managers’ photocall at the Cartuja Stadium in Seville
Amid reports from media close to the club that they were contemplating refusing to play the match
Madrid finally confirmed their participation late on Friday night
“Faced by the rumours that have emerged in the last few hours, Real Madrid wish to communicate that our team has never proposed renouncing playing in tomorrow’s final,” the statement said
“Our club understands that the unfortunate and inappropriate declarations made by the referees assigned to this game
cannot stain a sporting event of global significance which millions of people will watch.”

despite the hostility and animosity of that has today once again been made clear against our club
The statement finally brought to an end a long evening of uncertainty
Carlo Ancelotti and Luka Modric were scheduled to speak to the media at 7.15pm local time in Seville but
There was no announcement at the time and Madrid did not directly explain the decision later
Nor did they admit to asking the RFEF to remove De Burgos Bengoetxea or the VAR official Pablo González Fuertes
But a statement released an hour later described the referees’ remarks as “premeditated”
using a “threatening tone” and demonstrating a “manifest hostility” towards Real Madrid
The club accused the referees of “announcing supposed actions which are far from the principles of equality
objectivity and impartiality which should prevail a few hours before a footballing event followed by millions of people around the world”
they would have faced a year-long ban from the competition and a fine of between €3,000 and €12,000
Eleven years they have waited for a clasico final and when at last it came
it was the referee in the spotlight when it fell upon Seville
Madrid had been angered by a pre-match press conference in which De Burgos Bengoetxea and González Fuertes talked about the club’s repeated criticism of referees on their TV channel
both men appeared to have come with a message to deliver 24 hours before the game
González Fuertes warned of the impact on young officials
and said that stronger actions had to be taken
De Burgos Bengoetxea meanwhile was close to tears as he recounted the impact it has on his children
“When a child goes to school and people tell him his father is a thief it’s messed up,” the official said
“All I can do is educate my son so that he knows that his father is honourable
and for everyone to reflect on where we want to go; I would like you all to know

We see anonymous people on social media insulting and threatening referees without any control
those responsible for clubs’ social media continuously attacking us
The consequences of talking about robberies and using bad words
is something that the boys and girls who pick up a whistle to do a kids’ game end up paying for

That was the first press conference of the day. Barcelona’s press conferences were at 5.15pm, during which Hansi Flick had said: “We need the referees.” Madrid were due to appear two hours later. But, as they had done with the Ballon d’Or ceremony in October, they did not show up
no training session and no handshake between the coaches
had already decided not to attend any of the institutional events
The RFEF subsequently confirmed that Madrid had told them that they would not be participating in any pre-match activities
Madrid wanted the Federation to remove De Burgos Bengoetxea from refereeing duties
considering his position untenable following the press conference and what they saw as a conflict of interests
But they did not directly or publicly demand for that to happen and the first of their two subsequent statements stopped short of repeating that threat openly
their position had been expressed through the media close to the club hierarchy
which also leaked the possibility of them not turning up for the match
“Real Madrid CF considers the public statements made today by the referees appointed for the Copa del Rey final to be unacceptable,” the club said in a statement
“These remarks made in a premeditated manner
24 hours before [kick-off and] against one of the participants in the final demonstrate
a clear and manifest animosity and hostility against Real Madrid
Real Madrid expects the RFEF and the refereeing establishment to act accordingly
adopting the relevant measures in defence of the institutions that they represent.”
The RFEF insisted that it would not change the referees and that it expected the game to go ahead but conversations continued and the wait for confirmation went on into the evening until Madrid announced that they had never contemplated boycotting
Ancelotti was not in the press room at La Cartuja at 7.15pm local time
but his team will be out on the pitch at 10pm on Saturday night
Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea cried during a news conference on Friday as he detailed the impact criticism from Real Madrid’s in-house television channel and other outlets has had on him and his family
De Burgos Bengoetxea, who will take charge of Saturday’s Copa del Rey final between Madrid and Barcelona
became visibly emotional as he described an occasion where his son had returned home from school in tears because classmates had called the 39-year-old official a “thief”
Videos pointing out alleged biases against Madrid by match officials have become regular features of Real Madrid TV ahead of big games
the channel published a video compilation of alleged mistakes made by De Burgos Bengoetxea during previous Madrid matches
“We’re focusing a lot on the videos on Real Madrid Television
I’m not going to tell you otherwise,” he said
“I’m going to tell you about situations that have happened to colleagues of mine and then you give me your evaluation because I want you to answer me
“When one of your children goes to school and there are kids who tell him that his dad is a thief and he comes back home crying
“What I do in my case is try to educate my son to tell him that his father is honourable
I want my son to be proud of what his dad was and what refereeing is
“Because refereeing has given us lots of values and there’s no right (to put us through) what we’re experiencing
Lots of male and female colleagues — not (just) professional football
because this affects our families — but above all at grassroots level
So everyone should reflect on where we want to go and what we want from sport and football

There had been suggestions Madrid would pull out of Saturday’s final following De Burgos Bengoetxea’s comments
which the club described as “unacceptable” and showing “the clear and manifest animosity and hostility of these referees toward Real Madrid”
Madrid released a second statement on Friday insisting they “never considered withdrawing” from the game
“Our club understands that the unfortunate and inappropriate statements made by the referees designated for this match
and all those who are already in the Andalusian capital,” the club wrote
Madrid released a statement on Friday following the news conference
considers unacceptable the public statements made today by the referees appointed for the Copa del Rey Final to be held tomorrow 26 April 2025,” said the club
which have surprisingly placed in the spotlight videos made by a media outlet protected by freedom of expression
made in a premeditated manner 24 hours ahead of the final against one of its participants
these referees clear and manifest animosity and hostility towards Real Madrid
to announce supposed measures or actions that are far removed from the principles of fairness
objectivity and impartiality that should prevail just hours before a football event that will draw the attention of hundreds of millions of people around the world
Real Madrid hopes that those in charge of the RFEF (Spanish Football Association) and the refereeing profession will act accordingly
taking the corresponding measures in defence of the honour of the institutions they represent.”
have indicated to The Athletic that they expect the RFEF to remove De Burgos Bengoetxea and Gonzalo Fuertes
who is set to be the Video Assistant Referee (VAR)
from officiating Saturday’s game after their comments
When asked by The Athletic whether the officials would be sanctioned
the RFEF said that no request had been made to have them removed from the game
Madrid also cancelled their own planned media session with a player and head coach Carlo Ancelotti
which had been scheduled for 5.15pm CET in Seville
Club sources also indicated they would not be attending any of the pre-game events organised by the RFEF
RFEF president Rafael Louzan told El Larguero radio show on Friday night that he had spoken with Madrid’s director general Jose Angel Sanchez
He said there had not been a request to change the officiating team and in no moment had he feared that Madrid would not take part in the game
“It was a very friendly conversation of 40 minutes,” Louzan said
“A request to change the refs was not put on the table
The CTA (referees technical committee) designated a refereeing team and that’s that.”
Louzan also spoke about Madrid boycotting all the pre-game activities
including Ancelotti and players not appearing for their scheduled press conferences
and no club representative attending the formal dinner with the federation
Barcelona’s directors and local government dignitaries at Seville’s Real Alcázar palace
“I spoke with Real Madrid to tell them they had to take part,” Louzan said
We all have better moments and sometimes take decisions which each of us has to judge for themselves
The most important thing is we have a great game tomorrow.”
While it is uncommon for referees in England
the Spanish football federation (RFEF) — the body which governs soccer and match officials in the country — has held this type of news conference ahead of the Copa del Rey final for the last few years
in an age where every decision can be micro-analysed on TV and social media
Madrid have long been publicly vocal whenever the club feels officiating decisions have not gone their way
and club president Florentino Perez has been critical of what many at the Bernabeu view as refereeing bias against their side
RMTV is frequently a platform where officials are criticised
The tensions between Madrid and the authorities have been heightened by the ongoing Negreira case
which involves Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira
the former vice-president of Spanish football’s refereeing committee who owned a company that was paid a total of €7.3million (£6.4m; $7.8m) by Barcelona between 2001 and 2018
He and Barcelona have denied the payments he received constitute any wrongdoing
with the club saying he was hired as an “external consultant” who provided reports “related to professional refereeing”
Madrid were angered by two decisions during their 1-0 La Liga loss at Espanyol
after opposition defender Carlos Romero was not sent off for a challenge on Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior had a goal disallowed
Madrid filed a formal complaint to the RFEF and the Spanish government’s High Sports Council (CSD)
demanding the “immediate submission of VAR audio”
Pundits on RMTV claimed the decisions proved that Spain’s Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) chief Luis Medina Cantalejo is involved in a conspiracy against their club
They also called for the sacking of Carlos Clos Gomez
and the departure of RFEF president Rafael Louzan
Videos similar to the one produced about De Burgos Bengoetxea before the Copa del Rey final are also common
Referee Alejandro Jose Hernandez Hernandez was the subject of an 11-minute RMTV package of allegedly incorrect key decisions he had made during Madrid matches ahead of taking charge of their La Liga fixture against Atletico Madrid in March 2021
they reach you,” Hernandez Hernandez told the COPE radio station in November 2023
Fuertes also addressed the media and said that there is “more unity than ever” among his 180 male and female refereeing colleagues “because of the circumstances that we have to live around us”
He added that they “are going to have to start taking measures” because “we’re not going to allow what happens to keep happening”
and that this group of referees “is going to make history” in men’s and women’s football

It is with great sadness and heartfelt remembrance that we announce the passing of Evelyn Burgos
affectionately known as "The real boss over at Danielwood"
Evelyn was a one-of a kind spirit who brought joy
and unforgettable moments to everyone fortunate enough to know her
She was always the first to greet you with a cheerful "Hi my friend
how are you?" Her warmth and authenticity set the tone for everyone's day
Evelyn had a special gift of connecting with people-she often spoke in Spanish
sharing her words and translating their meaning
she not only told us stories but also taught many of us to speak her native language
Evelyn developed many special and sincere relationships with many staff members over the years
She cherished drinking tea-exactly the way she liked it (and if you made it wrong
She could often be found lounging with her best friend Ashley
Evelyn's personality was vibrant as her laugh
underneath her fiery words was a fierce loyal
fought bravely and never let anyone walk all over her
her unapologetically loud burps echoed through the room
She adored sharing stories about her beloved grandmother and the resilience she showed surviving Willow brook
Evelyn also had a knack for recounting funny moments
"Evelina" as she liked to remind us of the nickname her close friends used
will be deeply missed- not just for her jokes and curses
Whether belting out "Canta No Llores" (Sing
Don't Cry) or strolling down the hallway
Evelyn's presence was felt and celebrated
and authenticity lit up every room she entered
and in doing so she inspired others to do the same
her memory will live on in the countless lives she touched
It was truly and honor to share in the life of such a remarkable soul

For Worcester artist Matthew Burgos, art really is life
Burgos serves as a photographer in the marketing department of Worcester Polytechnic Institute
but has many dimensions to his photography
including capturing images of live concerts by bands at local venues
In addition to photography, Burgos also works in other artistic media, including colored pencils and graphite, noting humorously, but in a way perhaps other can understand: artists "do too much." Burgos, who recently featured as a vendor at the Worcester Punk Rock Flea Market held Sept. 28 and 29 at the Hotel Vernon
In the midst of preparing for the flea market
Burgos took time to talk about his art and multifacted vision
I work at (Worcester Polytechnic Institute) as my main job
More: It's Halloween, jazz-age style, as Haunted Speakeasy moves to Worcester Art Museum
More: Janice Harvey: Regrets not asking parents about their lives in Worcester
How do you get the word out about your artwork
Mostly through social media. As much as I hate it, Instagram and Facebook, it's a necessary evil these days
I go to all the shows with a lot of local artists — Worcester
What is the most challenging aspect of that
which might be immediately apparent to someone looking at the photos
Going to new venues. You have no idea the range of room you have, the lighting, the crowd. I don't do a lot of large concerts, so I don't have to worry about passes and that kind of thing ... I do a lot of local bars: (Hotel) Vernon, Ralph's, Electric Haze
Are there things you have learned at work that help in your art
I burn out from that less than the ones with music

Kenny Burgos knew that he wouldn’t stay in politics for decades when he was elected to the State Assembly in 2020 at the age of 26. But the Bronx Democrat still surprised Albany when he announced his resignation in July after only two terms in office
Although state ethics laws prevent Burgos from lobbying the state for two years
he’ll still be involved in setting policy and ensuring the new organization meets the needs of landlords across the city
City & State caught up with Burgos to discuss his new job
This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity
I interned at the finance department at the New York City Council and really got a glimpse into the city budget and government administration at that level to see what we were spending and what the council’s priorities were
Then I started working for my own councilwoman
Several long-serving members are retiring at the end of this term while others are leaving for other jobs
It was a job made for my skills and personality
I got to represent a neighborhood I grew up in and still lived in
I spoke to City & State a year ago and we talked about the length of officials in office, when Dick Gottfried resigned
I think we passed the era of a decades-long official
There was the thought in the back of my mind how much I can give to the legislature
I always had in the back of my mind (that) I wouldn’t be in elected office for decades to come
I saw how difficult it can be to raise a child while being in Albany half the year
and that was a heavily weighing factor in terms of leaving the legislature
What was it about advocating for the city’s smaller property owners that interested you specifically
Growing up in the Bronx is a huge part of it
I have family who are small property owners
who try to maintain their homes and try to make it in the city
That issue is often conflated with larger landlords
and there’s been a heavy depiction of what a landlord is in New York City
Working to help small property owners for me was a main focus for me because we have a housing crisis in the state and the city and it’s been this way for decades
Why are the Rent Stabilization Association and Community Housing Improvement Program merging to form the New York Apartment Association
We can’t continue on this path of a housing emergency
NYAA will be focused on increasing and preserving affordable housing
We’re going to do that by reducing the cost of housing
There's a lot we can do to work with the government together including property tax reform
That’s the main reason why NYAA was formed
We know there's a housing crisis and we want to work with everyone
Renters and housing providers are losing in this current system
and there’s an opportunity to align their interests and (ensure) the future viability of New York City
Some landlords are concerned that their interests won’t be heard because of the merger
How will you work with owners in both groups to ensure their needs are met
Real estate is a big industry in the state
and the goal of NYAA is to be a voice for all owners
I would say we’re about 95 to 98% on alignment on issues
We have professionals here who have been working for decades to address their concerns
We need to make sure we hear them out on all the unique needs that owners are experiencing
How are you working to deal with a two-year ban on lobbying
We have our own internal procedures and operate fully by the law to make sure I'm completely walled off from these conversations
The organization handles a lot more than state legislative priorities
(the state Department of Housing and Community Renewal)
One way NYAA has been described is triple-A for multi-family property owners because we deal with lease services and safety notices and other issues
I’ll be handling a lot of that work to provide value to owners
and we’ll have a team to make sure legislative priorities are progressing
A version of “good cause” eviction finally passed after several attempts
but many landlords are expressing concern over how it will work
How can the law be tweaked to ensure that tenants can remain protected and landlords have stable tenants
The housing package that was passed took some small steps on housing
“Good cause” is a new law and NYAA will help our members comply with it
We expect it will be a larger part of housing policy
We still have a lot of conversations to have with housing providers and renters
You co-sponsored a bill with state Sen. Leroy Comrie to increase rents on vacant regulated apartments
Would you be open to making changes so that rents wouldn’t rise significantly but landlords can still get the funding they need to make necessary repairs
One of our top goals here is to decrease costs on operating housing
Everyone is concerned to keep rent as affordable as possible which is predicated on decreasing the cost of housing
we’re open to decreasing costs in order to create more homes
What can landlords do to help the city tackle the migrant crisis
Will you be working with asylum seekers and shelters providers directly
We have thousands of property owners representing thousands of units throughout the city
which we should be making a priority to get back online
Any goal or initiative that increases the supply of housing is going to help tackle the housing crisis
however it relates to migrants or New Yorkers struggling to get an apartment
And NYAA can absolutely be part of that solution
What do you think about congestion pricing
Should the governor unpause the program or should it be altered in any way
I’m on record having many reservations on the congestion pricing policy
I believe congestion pricing is going to continue to perpetuate a system we have in this city where it's a tale of two cities
Certain boroughs are expensive due to tolling
It’s part of that and should be looked at not just in regards to transportation policy but housing policy
What role will NYAA play on property tax reform going forward
NYAA is going to be on record that the property tax system is broken
as many of our members have been saying for many years
There have been lawsuits exposing the injustices of the property tax system
If possible we will propose legal action. It’s never out of the question. We saw the TENNY lawsuit exposing the property tax system for being unjust and how it affects our members
Property taxes have a significant cost on their buildings
and they continue to increase year-over-year
We can say without a doubt we’re unfairly bearing the largest brunt of the property tax system
I’ll miss Albany for speaking with colleagues
One of my favorite things was having a single Tuesday lobby day
where I got to speak with seven to eight different experts on completely different parts of the spectrum
from education to prison reform to housing in all of a span of a few hours
Being an elected member was insanely rewarding so I’ll definitely miss both of those things

Jillian Burgos has conceded to her opponent
Former California Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian
after he took a wide lead in the race for Los Angeles City Council District 2
Nazarian has earned about 6,500 more votes than Burgos — 54% to her nearly 46%
saying in a statement that he's incredibly grateful to the voters and humbled by the chance to serve as the next councilmember
As his strong early results started to trickle in
Nazarian quickly pivoted last Tuesday night to discussing how he planned to use this office to resist a second Trump presidency
“You better believe that Los Angeles is going to be the lead to make sure that Trump does not continue doing what he did four years ago,” Nazarian told his supporters at an election night watch party in Sun Valley
He later doubled down in his victory statement
adding that the challenges ahead will be significant
an optician who has served on the North Hollywood Neighborhood Council
waged a progressive campaign in which she said she would increase outreach to unhoused residents and oppose large pay raises for the Los Angeles Police Department
she said she's grateful for her supporters and the campaign they built
“I have the lived-in experience,” Burgos said
“I know what it is to have to work multiple jobs
live with multiple people just in order to survive
And we know that we have to have diversity on our council.”
Dani Torres said he chose Burgos because he liked that she’s more of a newcomer to politics
He hoped she would push for more accountability on homelessness spending
“All I see is more homelessness,” Torres said
“I still see friends of mine who are like a paycheck away from becoming homeless
At a polling place at North Hollywood Recreation Center
so many voters turned out that poll workers ran out of “I Voted” stickers
That was a disappointment to Daniella Sherman
who wanted a sticker after casting her first vote in a presidential race since becoming a citizen
Sherman said she picked Nazarian in the council race
hoping he would do more to remove encampments
“I feel bad for the people that they are homeless,” Sherman said
“But it’s not my fault that I’m going to be attacked at night
This council district seat has been held for more than 14 years by Paul Krekorian
who couldn’t run again because he is termed out
Nazarian served as Krekorian’s chief of staff

Bellingham Happy with De Burgos in Black and White | Didac Aguirre FIRST TEAM Leak of the Video That Has Saved Bellingham and Knocks Out de Burgos BengoecheaThe Evidence That Has Shown the Serious Mistake Made by De Burgos Bengoechea with Jude Bellingham's Expulsion30/04/2025 19:40:00h by Didac Aguirre
The match between Real Madrid and Barcelona for the Copa del Rey has given much to talk about
the controversies of the game didn't take long to appear
with Real Madrid as the main affected party after the final whistle
Real Madrid has managed to save the Englishman
In the report presented by De Burgos Bengoechea
it can be seen that Bellingham's expulsion was for approaching the referee with "an aggressive attitude." Facing a significant sanction for this
Real Madrid has shown a video as evidence to save Bellingham
it can be seen that the Englishman never approaches the referee
Video in Question of Bellingham | Didac AguirreAlthough the video itself shows how Bellingham intended to speak with De Burgos Bengoechea
Jude Bellingham hasn't received any sanction
the refereeing excelled once again for its questionable decisions
particularly stood out during the extra times of this tense match
Real Madrid ended up tired of another inefficient job
where De Burgos Bengoechea sought to harm as many Real Madrid players as possible
With Lucas Vázquez and Rüdiger receiving strong sanctions
the next was Bellingham for an action he never committed
Bellingham Smiling | Real Madrid ConfidencialAlthough De Burgos Bengoechea remained firm in his version
the leaked video has completely exposed him to the world
Being able to see a Bellingham who never approached him
De Burgos Bengoechea's judgment is being questioned
Seeking to improve the refereeing situation in Spanish soccer

It wasn’t a great day for Akron’s starting pitchers (either of them)
Rorik Maltrud failed to get out of the first inning
allowing two runs on two hits with two walks in 0.2 innings
The only good part of his outing was both of his outs were strikeouts
Piggyback partner Carter Spivey didn’t fare much better
allowing three runs on four hits with two more walks and four strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work
holding Altoona scoreless for the game’s final 5.2 innings
followed by 2.0 scoreless innings from Zach Jacobs
Davis Sharpe added a 1-2-3 eighth inning with a pair of strikeouts to earn the win and Zane Morehouse dropped the hammer with a 1-2-3 ninth inning and a strikeout to earn his second save
Box Score: Captains improve to 3-1

made his 2025 debut and he impressed with seven strikeouts and just one run allowed on three hits in 3.1 innings of work
Jack Jasiak also was terrific out of the bullpen
throwing 2.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts and zero walks
Steven Perez was called on in the ninth with the bases loaded
one out and a two-run lead and he only allowed one inherited runner to score to earn the save
Box Score: Hillcats improve to 3-1
It was a sensational pitching performance all around for Lynchburg on Tuesday
beginning with starting pitcher Jose Alfaro

Alfaro threw 5.0 scoreless innings of one-hit ball while striking out five and walking none
he’s a 21-year-old hurler out of Venezuela who spent most of last season in Arizona
but pitched well in six appearances with the Hillcats to close out the 2024 campaign
The rest of Lynchburg’s bullpen held down the fort
allowing just one more hit the rest of the way
Donovan Zsak bounced back from a rough 2025 debut with 2.0 scoreless innings and three punchouts and Luis Flores closed things out with a 1-2-3 ninth inning and two more Ks
Lynchburg didn’t really have any standouts
but the team was pesky with five different Hillcats stealing a base
going 1-for-2 with two walks and a stolen base
Ryan Cesarini had the team’s lone extra base hit
going 1-for-3 with a double and a walk while Luis Merejo went 1-for-3 with a walk and Yaikel Mijares walked twice

Real Madrid are reportedly hoping for a change of referee for Saturday’s Copa del Rey final against Barcelona after being left “stunned” by Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea’s comments ahead of the match
Real Madrid are shocked at the turn of events and “are waiting for the RFEF to take action and remove De Burgos Bengoetxea from the match”
Los Blancos believe he “is not ready to referee the match after breaking down in tears” just over 24 hours before the game is due to kick off in Seville
the report claims that Real Madrid are unlikely to get their way and that it is “unfeasible” to replace De Burgos Bengoetxea at this point

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced the second similar arrest of an employee in about five weeks
the latest being an officer accused of inappropriate conduct with a crime victim
was charged Thursday morning with false imprisonment of an adult and battery causing bodily harm
director of Personnel and Professional Standards at the Sheriff's Office
said the six-year officer has been suspended without pay and will be terminated
It began Wednesday with a call for service about 4 p.m
"After the initial investigation was completed
Burgos returned and met the victim again purporting to be conducting an additional investigation," Kee said
"While alone with the victim and under the color of authority
Burgos did not allow the victim to leave the area and he touched the victim without valid consent
the victim called JSO and reported Burgos' conduct."
Detectives with the Sheriff's Office Integrity Unit began their investigation and concluded he should be arrested
"JSO is appalled by Burgos' conduct and by the fact that he committed these crimes while representing himself as a public servant," Kee said
JSO sends a clear message that we will not tolerate when a member of this agency violates the law and threatens the public trust in law enforcement."

He advised that if anyone thinks something isn't right during an interaction with police
ask to speak to a supervisor or call 911 or (904) 630-0500
Burgos has had some previous internal reprimands including citing the wrong person in a 2022 traffic crash he investigated
"That's a huge mistake and a huge inconvenience for that driver
The next year he had a written reprimand level 2 for violation of weapons policy..
then it involves progressive discipline all the way to termination
but he was certainly working towards that and being monitored by his supervisors."
Burgos becomes the 11th Jacksonville sheriff's employee arrested internally this year and the 15th overall
The director said he could not release details about the type of crime that was reported or location based on privacy laws
the arrest report that was later released included more details
The call was for domestic violence with injuries and led to the arrest of the woman's boyfriend
Burgos returned to the woman's home to provide information on a Safe Place to reside
"You're a beautiful girl" and offered to buy items for her baby
and he asked if they could talk upstairs in her unit
He said he was questioning his decision to only arrest her boyfriend and requested she do something that was redacted from the report
Josue Garriga: Jacksonville officer in Jamee Johnson police shooting is arrested in Clay County case
She said she realized he wasn't wearing a camera and tried to turn on her cellphone video
"Are you recording me right now?" She feared what he might do
More was redacted until the report continued with Burgos making multiple references to not arresting her earlier for various reasons
Then he asked her if her boyfriend sexually assaulted her
She said she was scared but was secretly able to activate her cellphone video and record several minutes of the interaction
A couple more lines were then redacted before he left and she immediately called her mother
Waters also said the officer had turned his body-worn camera off
McKinney, 46, also was charged with false imprisonment and battery. He had been with the Sheriff's Office for two years and previously ran the McKinney Family Funeral Home
Waters said the incident began with McKinney pulling over the driver in his marked patrol vehicle on Sept
McKinney began remarking on the attractive appearance of the driver
even asked her for her phone number," the sheriff said
he directed the driver to follow him in her vehicle to a nearby location
he continued his personal advances toward the driver and made inappropriate physical contact with her."

he says he has the knowledge and experience to tackle the city’s problems
He is of Armenian descent in a district with the city’s largest concentration of Armenian Americans
Burgos, 45, is campaigning as an opponent of the status quo, vowing to take on corporate interests and prioritize “community solidarity.” She promises to work to ensure that “housing is a human right.” She says she would break new ground at City Hall, becoming the council’s first Afro-Latina member.
Nazarian came in first in the top-two primary election, outpacing Burgos and five other candidates but falling short of the majority needed to avoid a runoff.
She grew up in Ohio and received a degree in theater and forensic anthropology from Ohio State University
Since 2021, Burgos has served on the NoHo Neighborhood Council, working to provide $5,000 grants for such groups as Polo’s Pantry, a food assistance program, and NoHo Home Alliance, which provides meals

which represents thousands of city workers
“I want to make sure the middle class always feels welcome
I want to make sure younger families are not moving to other parts of the region but want to raise their kids here in Los Angeles,” he told The Times
The 2nd District is anchored by North Hollywood and takes in all or parts of Studio City
The two candidates have sharply different approaches to public safety — particularly on funding for the Los Angeles Police Department
the union that represents rank-and-file officers
as well from Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna
Burgos is much more skeptical of police spending
She disagrees with Bass’ push to get to 9,500 officers
saying the city should invest in other community safety strategies
She opposed the mayor’s package of police raises
which are projected to add $1 billion to the LAPD budget over four years
When the raises were approved last year, Burgos accused city leaders of choosing militarization instead of humanity, saying on social media that it was “time to vote out the status quo.”
California
arguing it is too expensive and will pull money away from critical city services
Burgos identified herself as an “abolitionist” — someone who supports the “abolition of police and the prison-industrial complex” — in a candidate questionnaire she submitted to the Democratic Socialists of America Los Angeles
being an abolitionist means moving away from “reactive” law enforcement responses and supporting “community-based care” instead
it’s saying that we can help support our communities through preventive services
mental health services” and affordable housing
Nazarian has sought to make Burgos’ public safety stances an issue, portraying her as someone who would defund law enforcement
He said he wants the LAPD to focus more heavily on de-escalating potentially violent situations
And he warned that officers are more likely to make lethal mistakes if the department is severely understaffed
“I’ve been in a society that does not have people who protect the public
Both Burgos and Nazarian support Mayor Bass’ Inside Safe initiative, which has been moving unhoused Angelenos indoors. Of the two, Burgos sounds more skeptical of the program.
Burgos said Inside Safe participants have not always received the social services they need after moving into city-funded hotels and motels. She said that if elected, she would vote to approve funding for Inside Safe — but only after receiving assurances that those services are in place.
As her Inside Safe program enters its second year, Bass said she is determined to clear the bottleneck keeping homeless residents from getting into permanent homes.
Nazarian strongly supports Inside Safe, saying the program is moving homeless people into interim housing so that social workers can identify their long-term needs. In some cases, he said, that might be a housing voucher. In other cases, it could be a job placement, reunification with family members, or taxpayer-funded housing with extensive wraparound services, he said.
The two candidates outright disagree on another policy — Municipal Code 41.18, which prohibits encampments within 500 feet of schools, day-care centers and other locations selected by the City Council, such as certain senior centers or freeway underpasses.
Burgos said the ordinance does nothing to get people into housing and should be repealed.
“It’s a temporary solution to beautify the area,” she said in an interview. “It’s not taking care of people. Everything I do is people-centered.”
Nazarian supports 41.18, arguing that children should not have to make their way around encampments to get to school. But he said his bigger priority is to build more interim housing.
“I don’t want people to just get pushed into some other dark corner,” he said. “I want them to move into short-term housing. I want them to then receive the necessary support.”
Burgos said that if elected, she would seek a new cap on rent hikes in the city’s more than 600,000 rent-stabilized apartments. She believes that rent hikes should be no larger than 4% per year in those units, which were built before October 1978.
She also supports the creation of “social housing” — government-owned apartments that are at least partially managed by tenants. She wants the city to provide funding so that every renter who faces eviction has access to a lawyer. She also backs the idea of allowing new apartments to be built in R-1, or single-family, neighborhoods — as long as they are not too big.
“Do we need to have a huge seven-story building [in single-family areas]? No, not necessarily. But we can have the dingbats, the duplexes, the triplexes,” Burgos said. “There are so many creative ways to add additional housing to an R-1 neighborhood.”
Nazarian said he would concentrate growth on the district’s transit routes, adding multistory projects to corridors such as Lankershim Boulevard, Vineland Avenue, Victory Boulevard and Vanowen Street. He largely opposes the idea of putting apartments in R-1 areas.
He would consider small-scale apartments on R-1-zoned lots that are immediately adjacent to transit routes. But those areas would need to serve as transitional spaces between high-density transit routes and low-density, single-family neighborhoods, he said.
For rent-stabilized units, Nazarian wants yearly rent hikes to be tied to inflation, with increases capped at 5%.
Candidates on the left made crucial advances in the March 5 primary election for City Council, setting the stage for some hard-fought runoff campaigns.
Mayor Karen Bass said her proposed budget, which will be released Tuesday, will seek to restore the LAPD to 9,500 officers — an extremely tall order during a staff shortage.
City Council President Paul Krekorian is termed out, making way in his district for a seven-candidate race to become the next representative of parts of the east San Fernando Valley.
The Times’ editorial board operates independently of the newsroom — reporters covering these races have no say in the endorsements.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighter
In Aug. 2022, Professional Fighters League (PFL) outbid UFC and signed Burgos, a fan-favorite coming off a two-fight win streak, including “Fight of the Year” contender against Billy Quarantillo back in 2021
But, that wasn’t how things were supposed to unfold (details here)
Indeed, UFC made a rare misstep by letting Burgos walk, a decision UFC CEO, Dana White, later called a “big mistake” because he was always entertaining
Unfortunately for “Hurricane,” his PFL tenure proved disappointing. He went 1-2, with losses to Olivier Aubin-Mercier and Clay Collard (watch highlights) in 2023
“I went out with the PFL and I have zero regrets — hindsight is 20/20,” Burgos told InsideFighting recently
and it was a smart decision to make for my family
which requires multiple fights in a short period
“It was a physically and mentally grueling and
not just on the body but the mind as well as my family and I didn’t want to keep doing that to my family
I like time between fights because after a fight the weight of the world comes off your shoulders
“And I can only enjoy my family for a week,” Burgos finished
Now a free agent (again)
Burgos has his sights set on one goal: returning to UFC
“There’s basically one option for me at this point in mind,” Burgos said
I think every fighter in world knows the premier organization is UFC
I want to lay my gloves down in the UFC cage
Given his 8-3 UFC record and reputation for delivering thrilling fights (like this)
it’s likely only a matter of time before White and Co
Burgos plans to compete at Lightweight (as he did in PFL) because it allows him to take fights on short notice
he’s open to dropping back to Featherweight

announced September 16 that it filed a legal request for the eviction of ten Poor Clare nuns
who declared themselves in rebellion against the Vatican in May and were excommunicated, from the Santa Clara de Belorado convent where they have resided
the saga of the "Burgos schism" continues as the archdiocese of the northern city announced that it had sought legal action for the eviction of ten Poor Clare nuns who declared themselves in rebellion against the Vatican and were excommunicated
began in May when the sisters residing at the Santa Clara convent in the village of Belorado
a 15th-century establishment in a town of 1,800 inhabitants located 50 kilometers from Burgos
announced they were breaking ties with the Catholic Church and declaring Pope Francis an "usurper."
Despite the church's efforts to convince them otherwise
the Archdiocese of Burgos announced their excommunication and requested they leave the convent
having confirmed that there was no attempt by the former nuns to reconsider their decision
legal services proceeded to initiate legal action" and order their eviction through the courts
the archdiocese said in a press release September 16
The nuns' case erupted amid a property dispute with the hierarchy
The nuns were accused of belonging to a sect associated with "sedevacantism," a movement that considers all popes after Pius XII (1939-1958) to be heretics
The conflict began with the annulment of the purchase of a convent in the Basque Country of Spain
the nuns reached an agreement with the neighboring Diocese of Vitoria to purchase the Orduña convent
the transaction was "blocked by Rome," and they still refuse to leave the Belorado convent
including his parents visiting from Puerto Rico
now reside full time in Shelbyville with his daughter
But with his win aboard Cause a Ruckus in the seventh race of the day
Alberto Burgos sealed the deal and took home his first career Leading Jockey title.A native of Puerto Rico
Burgos is competing in his second year at Horseshoe Indianapolis
He began riding in Puerto Rico in 2019 where he gained his license
After three months of action at Camarero Racetrack
A connection to agent Kerry “Bones” Wirth brought him to Indiana for the 2023 meet.“Every jockey wants to come to the U.S
“I got connected with ‘Bones’ and he took my book last year
and I want to thank everyone that has supported me.”
Burgos is having the best season of his career in 2024
he is closing in on 100 wins this year and more than $2.5 million in earnings
Burgos has 243 career wins and has ridden horses to more than $6.6 million in career earnings.“It’s unbelievable,” said Burgos about his first title
so I’m glad I stuck with it to get where I am today
This is something I’ve worked hard for and it means so much to win this title.”Burgos had many highlights throughout the meet
but one of the standouts was his seven wins aboard Cupid’s Runaway
Burgos completed the season with 81 wins and earnings of more than $2.1 million.Burgos was joined by his Jock’s Agent Kerry Wirth and his family
now reside full time in Shelbyville and his daughter
The 25-year-old jockey plans to ride at Turfway during the winter and be ready for the start of the 2025 racing season Tuesday
The 22nd season of live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing concluded Thursday, Nov. 14. Racing returns for the 23rd season Tuesday, April 15. For more information on live racing at Horseshoe Indianapolis, visit www.caesars.com/horseshoe-indianapolis/racing or find the track on Social Media @HSIndyRacing
The only mystery is why there are still so many in Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing unwilling to face the problem squarely enough to help solve it
In a surprise Friday afternoon announcement
Assembly Member Kenny Burgos released a statement saying that he had resigned from the state Legislature
The move brings Democrats’ ranks in the Assembly down to 100
the lowest it has been in years and the bare minimum to hold onto the party’s veto-proof supermajority
In a statement posted on social media, Burgos
who represented Assembly District 85 in the South Bronx
cited the imminent birth of his first child as a major factor in his decision to step down
“As I prepare to step back from my role in the Assembly
my spirit remains ever rooted in the Bronx,” Burgos said
“I will continue to engage with and support this community that I love so dearly
contributing in every capacity I can to ensure our progress never falters.” Burgos did not face any primary opposition this year and was expected to easily win reelection
Now his district will remain vacant until the general election in November
The Bronx Democratic Party will select a candidate to replace Burgos on the general election ballot
A spokesperson for the county party said that while the final decision will be made by the Bronx Democrats’ County Committee
the party is supportive of state Democratic Committee Member Emerita Torres
She currently serves as vice president for policy
research and advocacy at the anti-poverty nonprofit Community Service Society
Torres is also a former diplomat for the U.S
so if Torres wins the blessing of party leaders
Though the seat will almost certainly remain in Democratic hands
Burgos’ exit officially drops the number of Democrats in the Assembly to 100
they would lose their Assembly supermajority for the first time in at least a decade
Burgos’ exit comes on the heels of Assembly Member Kenneth Zebrowski’s resignation earlier this month
already somewhat depleted after the 2022 elections
With lawmakers gone from Albany until next year – unless they get called back on unplanned business – the change in numbers will realistically have little impact
Even if they the state Legislature were in session
is still more than enough to assert the kind of dominance Democrats have had in the chamber since they gained uninterrupted control of it in 1975
But after several years of red waves in New York
most notably in 2022 when control of the House flipped in large part due to GOP performance in the state
Assembly Democrats have enjoyed comfortable supermajorities since the 2016 elections brought their ranks up to 107 members (including one independent who formally became a Democrat in 2022)
It dropped to 106 following the 2018 elections
with fluctuations throughout the years based on vacancies

"So, let's talk about the podcast that I was just on," she said in her response video. "Everybody's like, 'Oh my gosh, she made all that money,' everybody's kind of shocked and surprised. If you know, you know. If you were in the nightlife in New York City, you know what happened on Power Ball Sundays. ... I don't know what's going on now in nightlife."
She added that "every year it got better and better for me," and doubled down on her claim she was raking in the cash as a bartender.
The entrepreneur and The Impact: New York star recently appeared on The Joe Budden Podcast, and during the episode, she claimed she was bringing in $30,000 per night as a bartender, even on slow nights. In fact, she said that on special occasions such as birthdays, she would bring in as much as $70,000.
“I only bartended for three years. I only said three years I was gonna be in here, start my clothing line, and I was out—buy my house and do what I gotta do, and that's what I did,” Burgos said.
As for how she brought in that much, she said that she played it "smart" and "built a relationship with the people in there."
Akademiks also reacted to her claims she made $30,000 on a slow night. He did some quick math, saying she would've made six million a year.

Shane Burgos was a huge favorite amongst the fanbase as he was consistently involved in some incredible fights
When he was part of the UFC featherweight division, Shane Burgos was almost a permanent fixture in the rankings despite never taking his career to the next level
‘Hurricane’ Shane seemingly became content with the fact that he would likely never win a UFC title and made his name as one of the most exciting fighters in the sport
putting his body on the line with every single outing
Burgos won Fight of the Night on four separate occasions
making him a reliable fighter for the promotion to lean on
Following a win over Charles Jourdain in 2023, Burgos shockingly announced that he was leaving the UFC to join the PFL
where he went on to fight in their $1m lightweight tournament
At the time, UFC boss Dana White admitted that the promotion ‘F—– up’ by letting the fan favorite go
which is extremely rare for the UFC boss to do
do I think Shane Burgos was gonna move on and be a world champion and all of this
I like guys that come out and they bring it every single time they fight
and guys who wanna perform and guys who wanna win,” White admitted during a post-fight press conference
I’m happy for him and good for the PFL too
And now, following Burgos’ loss to Clay Collard
he is once again a free agent and has pleaded for a return to the UFC
I made good money over there,” Burgos told Inside Fighting
and I think every fighter knows that the premier organization in the world is the UFC
I wanna lay my gloves down in the UFC cage,” he continued
Burgos went on to suggest that he is going to ‘stay ready’ incase a short notice opportunity comes up
During his six-year tenure in the UFC, the 34-year-old fought some big names in the featherweight division, including Calvin Kattar and Josh Emmett
However, one of the biggest fights of his career came against UFC legend Edson Barboza
After an incredibly close back-and-forth fight
Barboza connected with a big punch in round three
‘Hurricane’ Shane seemingly recovered from the punch
he gradually began stumbling backwards and subsequently ended up on the mat
The delayed response KO will go down as one of the most bizarre in UFC history
MLB Trade Rumors

The Giants signed Raymond Burgos to a new minor league contract earlier this month, as per the left-hander’s MLB.com profile page
Burgos elected minor league free agency after the season
but he’ll now return for what will be his third season in San Francisco’s organization
An 18th-round pick for Cleveland in the 2016 draft
Burgos didn’t make his pro debut until 2018 due to Tommy John surgery
He entered minor league free agency after the 2022 campaign and caught on with the Giants for the first time that winter
The Giants parted ways with the southpaw last fall and Burgos caught on with a Mexican League team
only to rejoin the Giants on a new minors deal last April
This reunion led to Burgos’ first and only appearance at the big league level
The 26-year-old left-hander allowed a run on three hits in his lone inning of relief work in San Francisco’s 5-4 win over the Cubs
the Giants designated Burgos for assignment and then outrighted him off their 40-man roster
and it makes sense that the team would add to this depth (for at least the Triple-A level) with a known quantity in Burgos
San Francisco Giants Transactions Raymond Burgos
Probably too ashamed to say it and get flamed
this seems like a guy who is very good at baseball
but presently not good enough to be a regular at the major league level
Any sense of whether he’s just waiting for enough guys to be injured or if he’s a couple of adjustments away from finding a more regular role
His AAA numbers are really good for that hitter-friendly environment
It would appear that he could bulk up a bit
The guy’s 6′-5″ and 170 lbs
I was kinda hoping the Giants would sign Goldschmidt (has monster lifetime numbers in San Francisco) and Walker Buehler (primed for a post TJ comeback and has a great bulldog competetive mentality)
All I can say is hopefully Posey has much bigger acquisitions in mind
entering his age 37 season isn’t encouraging
He could have a bounce back but even with a moderate bounce back wouldn’t be an upgrade on Wade/Flores
Wilmer has better odds for a bounce back than Goldschmidt
I wonder if Posey is feeling good about Sasaki
which is why nothing is happening with Burnes
Ya I think Flores/ Wade make a good platoon at First and or DH
I expect Wilmer to have a good bounce back year
hopefully Eldridge continues to amaze and works his way on to the roster
then they could trade Lamont at the deadline
