image: The Sant Gregori villa is situated approximately 75 meters from Burriana’s coastline
Its constructions date from the turn of the era to the 4th century CE
the site includes various spaces such as production structures
Its size exceeds the average of coastal villas excavated in the Roman province of Tarraconensis

Excavations at the Sant Gregori site in Burriana have revealed that this maritime villa specialized in viticulture
coordinated by the Mediterranean Archaeology Partnership Programme at the Universitat Jaume I of Castelló (UJI)
in collaboration with the Archaeological Museum of Burriana
has identified structures for wine production (cella vinaria) and agricultural plots dedicated to viticulture (fundus)
the Burriana City Council and the Archaeological Museum are working to include these areas in the site’s musealization and enhancement project
While no pressing rooms (torculares) have been found so far
storage areas and additional adjacent spaces
These buildings are isolated and follow an east-west orientation
protecting them from northern humidity and excessive southern sunlight
Archaeological evidence of vineyard cultivation has also been identified
specifically planting trenches (a type of planting referred to as sulcus by Columella and Pliny)
associated with structures related to winemaking
such as remnants of a large storage facility
remains of storage facilities are relatively common
but planting trenches with evidence of vine cultivation have been found in only a few locations
ten parallel trenches in excellent condition have been documented
allowing for the planting of multiple vines within them
Their average width ranges from 1.1 to 1.3 meters
One intriguing aspect is the location of the Sant Gregori vineyard—an open
Ancient writers Columella and Pliny noted that
the Pontine Marshes and the wetlands of Ravenna in Italy produced thriving vineyards thanks to drainage operations
Preliminary findings from the research have been published in the monograph Between the Land and the Sea: On Villae Maritimae in the Roman West
edited by Scienze e Lettere (Rome) in 2024
The Sant Gregori villa is situated approximately 75 meters from Burriana’s coastline
the area where the villa is located was linked to the Roman municipality of Saguntum
Findings from various archaeological excavations indicate that large agricultural estates were planned on the flatlands
focusing on vine cultivation and wine production
wine commerce reportedly became significant during Emperor Augustus’s reign and continued until at least the 2nd century CE
suggests that Saguntine wine was fairly popular in Rome during this period
around twenty students from the universities of Castelló
and Macerata participated in the third edition of the International Course on Archaeology and Ancient Mediterranean Cultures
They carried out fieldwork at the Sant Gregori villa
an activity organized by the Mediterranean Archaeology Partnership Programme of the UJI in collaboration with the Archaeological Museum of Burriana and the universities of Potsdam (Germany) and Macerata (Italy)
students had the opportunity to examine materials excavated at the archaeological site and observe the documentation process leading up to restoration and display
they participated directly in validating the augmented reality application ARChaeoUrn
developed within the ArchaeoPills project (Face to Face with Practical Archaeological Training in Higher Education)

Excavations conducted at the Sant Gregori site
located in the town of Burriana (Castellón
have brought to light significant remnants of a maritime villa from the Roman era that specialized in viticulture
led by the Aula de Arqueología Mediterránea of the Universitat Jaume I de Castelló in collaboration with the Burriana Archaeological Museum
has identified structures dedicated to wine production
and agricultural land designated for vine cultivation
The importance of these findings has prompted the Burriana City Council and the Archaeological Museum to work on a musealization project to highlight this unique historical site
Although the pressing rooms (torculares) have yet to be identified
areas for storage and other facilities have been uncovered
seem to follow a strategy to minimize humidity and protect against excessive sunlight
excavations have revealed trenches for vine planting
known as sulcus in the texts of Roman authors such as Columella and Pliny
are arranged in parallel and oriented northeast-southwest
enabling efficient cultivation of multiple vines per row
The case of Sant Gregori stands out due to the presence of these planting trenches in a coastal environment
a rare occurrence in Roman archaeology on the Iberian Peninsula
similar evidence had only been documented in regions such as Galicia
The ten trenches identified at Sant Gregori measure between 1.1 and 1.3 meters in width
with a spacing of 2.5 to 3 meters between their axes
raises intriguing questions about the techniques used to optimize vine cultivation in challenging terrain
Ancient texts suggest that the Romans were capable of transforming wet areas into productive land through drainage systems
as documented in the Pontine Marshes and the surroundings of Ravenna
constructed between the turn of the era and the 4th century AD
exceeding the average size of coastal villas in the Roman province of Tarraconensis
This extensive complex was connected to the Roman municipality of Saguntum
renowned for its prosperity in wine production and trade during the imperial period
particularly between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD
Some passages of 2nd-century Latin literature
Saguntine wine was a highly popular product in Rome

The Valencian Institute of Agricultural Research (IVIA) has started a research contract with the S.A.T
La Plana de Burriana company to evaluate the effect of metalized plastic covers on pest and disease management in citrus
including the Scirtothrips aurantii thrips
a researcher at IVIA's Plant Protection and Biotechnology Center
stated that the Community of Valencia's citrus sector is being affected by the pressure of exotic pests that threaten the productivity and sustainability of the crops
"One of the most alarming is the thrips Scirtothrips aurantii
the potential introduction of Diaphorina citri represents an imminent threat that could seriously compromise the economic viability of citrus growing in the Valencian Community," he added
and based on various international research projects
the IVIA will evaluate the effectiveness of metalized plastic covers in the integrated management of pests and diseases in citrus
It will also analyze the impact of these covers on the tree's growth and yields
These covers form a physical barrier that limits the direct access of insects that spend part of their cycle on the ground to the plants
reducing the number of insects that land on the crops
"Its reflective surface disorients insects during flight
interfering with their ability to locate and colonize host plants
as the metalized covers reflect light in the visible spectrum and part of the ultraviolet from the ground
creating a visually confusing environment that significantly reduces the incidence of pests on the treated crops," the expert stressed
metallic covers have positive effects on the crop's microclimate
promoting an increase in soil temperature and reducing water stress by improving moisture retention
which accelerates citrus growth and production
Alberto Urbaneja stressed that the effect of these covers has already been tested positively against other thrips and aphid species in the Valencian Community
this strategy could help regulate the population of the vector that transmits HLB
IVIA researchers in Florida have corroborated that the use of metalized plastics significantly reduces the pressure of Diaphorina citri and the incidence of HLB
These trials are being carried out in two citrus fields of S.A.T
La Plana de Burriana in the province of Castellón
each of which has a control crop without plastic

(ANS - Burriana) – A few years ago the Salesians in Spain launched a number of new works to meet the new needs of young people
putting the Salesians first in line in meeting young people’s needs
The opening by the Ángel Tomás Foundation of a new building called Buzzetti House in Burriana
The inauguration ceremony was attended by local and Salesian authorities
The “apartments for emancipation” are educational structures designed to accompany the process of emancipation of young people who
are no longer accompanied by the security measures that were guaranteed in shelters for young people
The goal of this project of the foundation is to give these young people
a bridge between life in an institution and independent living
This new facility can accommodate 5 people and has the support of the Department for Equality and Inclusive Policies
and the Provincial and Town Administrations
They are intended above all to accompany these young people on their way to full emancipation and adult life
The institutional inauguration of the project was attended by the Rector of the Salesian house of Burriana
the Regional Director of the Department for Equality and Inclusive Policies
the Delegate for Social Activities of Castellón
The director of the new Buzzetti House thanked all the relevant government departments for their cooperation and the Salesian house in the city for the attention offered to young people
taking advantage of the presence of the Vice-Provincial of the Mary Help of Christians Province
they proceeded to the blessing of the house
by the whole Salesian community led by its Rector
in the presence of educators and young people from the Salesian Social Platforms of Burriana
With the opening of the Buzzetti apartment for emancipation the Salesian community now has three active social projects in Burriana: one for educational support called the "Open Door Project"
a reception centre for minors called Casa Don Bosco
Through these three projects there are already about thirty young people directly supported by the "Ángel Tomás" Foundation

The Spanish orange and mandarin campaign is now nearing its end
It has been marked by periods of oversupply
overlapping varieties and competition from other origins in the case of mandarins
and by high pressure from Egypt in the case of oranges
was characterized by a low supply of fruit in the markets," says Jorge García Monfort
based in the Spanish municipality of Burriana
a slight decrease in the production and mild temperatures caused the fruit to ripen slowly
with high prices for the producers and for the stores."
although it is usual for it to rain in December and for part of the production of the Clemenules (the most planted variety) to be lost
this year the weather has facilitated the fruit's preservation in the field with good quality conditions up until the end of January
so there has been some overlap with the start of the Clemenvilla and the first Tango and Nadorcott
has been record-breaking this year," says the producer and exporter
there has also been a high production of Comune clementines from Italy and shortly after
Egypt had been associated only with oranges
but its mandarin production has been growing notably
especially those of the Tango and Murcott," says Jorge García
prices plummeted for all varieties due to the high supply."
Only by mid-March did the market become a little emptier
if we compare Spain with other third-country origins
our fruit is more expensive due to higher production and labor costs
we have the capacity to obtain profitable prices for the entire value chain
but it is impossible to compete with countries with such low costs," says Jorge García
The mandarin harvest has also been marked by the unusual presence of seeds in the fruits of almost all varieties
"One of the varieties that have escaped this is the Leanri
It is an interesting variety for the period when it arrives
Its organoleptic quality is similar to that of the Orri
There have been only 4 commercial campaigns of Leanri so far
but the trees are still young (up to 7 years old)
and the production is expected to grow in the coming years," says the producer and exporter
the campaign started very well for the Navelina
which found its place in the market after the end of the South African supply
and was marketed for very good prices until January
Then the market became flooded with oranges from Egypt
which in addition to having a growing market share in Europe
redirected a lot of its shipments there due to limitations in exporting to the Middle East and Far East because of the conflict in the Red Sea," says Jorge García
it has been very difficult for the Salustiana and Valencia oranges
which Egypt produces with quite an acceptable quality and sells for really aggressive prices
we have managed to keep the sales of Navel family oranges at good levels," he says
"It is clear that the presence of third countries will tend to continue rising in the coming years and it will become increasingly difficult for Spanish citrus (both oranges and in mandarins) to compete from January to early March."

Nerja council has created a new parking area for 165 vehicles on a site opposite the old fire station
next to the roundabout between the N-340 highway and Calle Filipinas
explained that the idea is not only to make parking easier in the area but also to improve the flow of traffic
as Nerja is expecting a large number of tourists for Easter
The new facility is just a few minutes’ walk from Burriana beach and the sports complex
The mayor also indicated that this could be the first of many
“We are looking at different sites so that we can gradually create more parking areas in Nerja and Maro,” he said
One of the biggest free parking areas in Nerja is out of use now
due to the construction of a new health centre
There are three underground car parks in the town
at Burriana beach and the Verano Azul park
In addition there are 1,000 ground-level spaces at Los Huertos de Carabeo
although there is a charge for parking there
The council is also planning to create a new free parking area at the entrance to Maro

Firefighters were called out this Thursday evening to tackle a wildfire that broke out in an area of agricultural land and ravines on the east side of Burriana beach in Nerja soon after 7pm
The alarm was raised after smoke was detected near the Cala de la Doncella
not far from farms and avocado plantations
The Plan Infoca forest firefighting unit informed on its social media that initially 14 firefighters and an environment officer had been dispatched to the scene
The provincial firefighting consortium also has a unit in the area along with the Local Police
The cause of the fire is not known although one of the initial hypotheses is that it started in an illegal settlement in the area
This blaze comes just two months after the fire that destroyed 36.6 hectares in the nearby Vega de Maro

Nestled in a lush valley on the banks of the Río Burriana
the Convento de Nuestra Señora de la Consolación de las Algaidas hides a story that is inextricably linked to the hermit community which lived in this region long before its construction in the 16th century
In this corner of the village of Villanueva de Algaidas - which at the time was part of Archidona - the land was deserted and dominated by nature
the hermits found the perfect refuge for their spiritual retreat
dense vegetation and abundance of water offered to these men of faith the ideal conditions for their isolation and their connection with the divine
during a period in which contact with the natural world was synonymous with proximity to God
As the historian Jonatan Iglesias Sancho explains
the wild characteristics of the area were key to the establishment of this hermit community
and was filled with lush vegetation and there was plenty of water
The hermits diverted the river to their settlement
allowing them to have constant access to the most valuable resource for independent existence
This kind of activity reveals how even in their refuge
the hermits depended on their immediate environment
both for survival and to sustain their spiritual life
The hermits that established themselves in this region belonged to The Order of St Paul
and were inspired by the teachings of St Paul the Hermit
who is recognised by the Catholic Church as the first hermit to have lived
these men were looking for an environment where they could dedicate themselves to prayer and meditation
the riches of the place did not go unnoticed by the few settlers of the surrounding areas
These inhabitants were drawn to the region in search of water
a vital resource that was particularly scarce at the time
Soon considerable tensions arose between the hermits and their neighbours
The hermits reported their incursions to the count of the region
arguing that the inhabitants of the surrounding areas were invading their territory and stockpiling the water that they had channelled themselves
The nobleman resolved this conflict with an unequivocal command: the water of the springs was to belong exclusively to the hermits
while their neighbours would be obliged to source their water directly from the Río Burriana
shows the constant fight for resources in a period in which access to water was key for a community's survival
the presence of the hermits in this corner of Villanueva de Algaidas left a legacy that would lay the foundations for the subsequent construction of the Convento de Nuestra Señora de la Consolación
This building marked a new chapter in the history of the area
transforming it from a spiritual refuge to the focal point of more organised religious activity
The memory of the hermits endures in folklore and in the landscape itself
which still shows the impact of that period
A British resident in Nerja found two bales of hashish on the shore of Nerja’s Burriana beach at around midday on Wednesday
which the recent storm had dragged onto the sand
Tom Sampson alerted the Guardia Civil who arrived on the scene within 20 minutes and intercepted the drugs
"I pulled them out of the surf so I know they didn't weigh anything like the reported 25kgs each."
The main hypothesis is that the drugs had been thrown from a boat in a shipment that was aborted by the drug traffickers when they were caught by the authorities
With the strong waves that have been battering the Andalusian coastline in recent days
Police are not ruling out the appearance of more packages along the Malaga and Granada coastlines in the coming days due to ongoing weather conditions

business owners in Nerja have reported an increase in the number of thefts from their premises
As can be seen in one of the videos circulating on social media
the alleged thieves act with total discretion
The precise way they steal has been captured by security cameras of one of the businesses in which they robbed
approaches the table where his victims are
has left her belongings on the floor at the side of the table
the alleged offender drags the bag and an item of clothing with his foot to the table just behind
he immediately sits down on the empty chair
pretending that he is going to stay and dine
Another camera in the same establishment catches him leaving the back of the business
co-owner of the bar and son of Francisco Ortega 'Ayo'
told SUR the woman noticed the robbery a few minutes later and alerted waiters
They urged her to report the incident to the Guardia Civil and showed their full cooperation in providing her with footage from the security cameras
"You really do have to be very careful and take the precaution of placing your bags out of reach of potential thieves," Ortega said
a cafeteria located in the central Avenida del Mediterráneo
the fast action of waiters prevented another alleged thief from taking a customer's handbag
the alleged thief passed right next to where the belongings were
The employees noticed him and ran after him
One of them took a bicycle belonging to his brother and caught up with him
The alleged offender then threw the purse to the ground
but before that he had had time to take the cash
even though the local police came and told us that it was the fifth theft like this they had attended
they can't do anything," said the 41-year-old businessman from Nerja

which are worth more than six thousand euros
the fish was already dead when we pulled it out
it had drowned after getting stuck in the nets," recalls Pastor
"If I had not uploaded it to social networks none of this would have happened," laments Pastor
along with a three year ban from fishing and a suspended fine of 386,000 euros for a crime against wildlife
on seeing their economic situation and testimonies
as long as both complied with the ban and did not commit further crimes during the three-year ban
“At home I have a very delicate situation with the pandemic
I have two unemployed children of 30 and 21 living with us and two grandchildren
and we only have 400 euros income from my wife," confesses Pastor
who has asked for a job at the town council and has gone to social services
because I can't go out fishing with my boat
which was how I made a living until just over a year ago," explained Pastor
who denies that the shark was cut up and sold in Nerja
the fish was given away to some beach bars in Burriana
"We have submitted a request for a pardon to the government of Pedro Sánchez but we have not yet been answered," he explained
he added that a few months ago he and his cousin met with the Minister of Interior
Pastor said the minister told him that he had heard of similar cases
the trawlers in the port of Caleta de Vélez have taken them out more than once," Pastor pointed out
Pastor worked in 2020 as the skipper of a cleaning boat in Nerja
when his ban on piloting motorboats had not yet been issued
In July of that year he was the protagonist of a story in SUR
when he rescued a 30-year-old swimmer who was drowning about 150 meters from El Playazo beach
that boy wouldn't have survived," he recalls
In November 2016 this newspaper reported the capture of the thresher shark in Nerja
Shark specialist at the Aula del Mar de Málaga
told SUR then that the species "is very unusual to see near the coast
he confirmed that "a few years ago one was captured off La Caleta de Vélez port
which was seized by the fisheries department of the Junta de Andalucía."
"On some occasions specimens have been seen near the ports
there are only a few hundred specimens left," Pinto pointed out at the time
while regretting that the regional government had not been able to intervene on this occasion
"It is a pity that there are still unscrupulous people of this type who do business with the sale of sharks in danger of extinction," he said
in April 2017 the Guardia Civil reported that there were four people being investigated for the capture and sale of the thresher shark in Nerja
A number of NGOs denounced the publication of the photo on social networks
which alerted the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Guardia Civil
The species is protected by national and international laws
and the fishing and sale of the shark is totally prohibited
Nerja town hall on the eastern stretch of the Costa del Sol has announced that it will be following in the footsteps of nearby Vélez-Málaga by turning off its foot showers but reopening the showers on the town’s adapted beaches
the new rule has not yet been fully implemented and on Tuesday 25 June there were still many footbaths in operation on beaches including El Chucho
This is a U-turn for the town hall as it has decided to change the criteria with which they have been operating in recent months: from having all the footbaths in operation to closing them in favour of reopening the showers on adapted beaches
explained to SUR that since last weekend workers have been disconnecting the footbaths on all the beaches and leaving only the showers adapted for people with reduced mobility
so that there will be at least one shower on each adapted beach
in areas such as Carabeíllo or Carabeo there will be no showers
there will be at least half a dozen adapted showers in operation
Although the number has not been finalised
municipal sources have told this newspaper that in the end there will be around twenty adapted showers in operation this summer on Nerja’s beaches
Muñoz has called for the rational use of water
asking that only people with reduced mobility use the showers
"We cannot put a policeman or a security guard at every shower all the time
A court has asked the Guardia Civil's environmental unit to investigate the source of effluent leaks around Nerja town centre this week
On Tuesday sewage was spotted spilling into the mouth of the Chíllar river
at El Chucho and El Playazo beaches to the west of town
and on Wednesday more effluent was reported on Burriana beach
According to the councillor responsible for water management and infrastructure
the spillage on Tuesday was caused by an electrical fault at the Calle Mérida pump which is connected to the pipes that flow into the Chíllar river and the sea
Rivas explained that this can happen during heavy rainfall or storms
he added that the problem was resolved within 15 minutes of the town hall being alerted to the problem
Rivas admitted that the lack of a waste water treatment plant in Nerja complicated the situation
visited Nerja and joined the town's PSOE mayor
in calling upon national government to allow work to restart on the waste water treatment plant
which has been stopped for over eight months
On the same day neighbours reported more waste water at Burriana beach
but the reason for the leak wasn't immediately clear
Rivas said on Tuesday that while we don't have a treatment plant this kind of situation is what we have to deal with
Work was halted when the company responsible for carrying out the project
76 per cent of the work has been carried out
including connecting pipes to pumping stations
the main site as well as the pumping station near Burriana beach remain unfinished
The tripartite leadership at Nerja town hall announced last week that if there was no news on progress by the end of January a series of protests would be organised
Nerja boasts one of the most rugged coastlines on the Spanish coast
with spectacular rocks and cliffs and especially in the Maro-Cerro Gordo area
Jumping from the rocks into the sea has become a popular
albeit risky sport and last Thursday it took the life of a 19-year-old from Torre del Mar
The young man drowned after jumping from the well-known Tarzan Peak
Although the death is under judicial investigation
it is believed that the man drowned after impact with the sea
the jump was made from a height of approximately ten metres
The activity has been banned by Nerja town hall since January 2021
when the council modified a bylaw dating from November 2017
which stipulated that "for the safety of bathers it is forbidden to jump into the sea water from the upper areas of the cliffs
marked areas where bathing is prohibited or access is restricted
shallow areas and spaces that pose a risk to the safety of people and other users."
Fines of 751 to 1,500 euros could be given to people caught jumping
in the vicinity of the Burriana rocks there is currently no signage indicating this prohibition
nor is there any along the 14 kilometres of Nerja's coastline
"The lifeguard service warns people of this prohibition when they see anyone in the area," municipal sources explained to SUR
while adding that they are going to "reinforce" the signage
action has been taken to remove ropes or other items that people place on the cliffs to jump," they added
lifeguards do call the local police if they suspect people are going to jump
Emergency services were put on standby and a police cordon was put in place at Nerja’s famous Burrriana beach after two local fisherman found a United States military explosive device floating in the water
Three members of a Spanish Navy specialist team were sent from Cadiz to deal with the military flare that was found by Francisco Pastor and José Cabello
the fishermen had taken the device out of the water and left it in the sand
"We thought it was a fire extinguisher from a boat or something like that
so we left it for the cleaning services to take care of
but over the weekend it has remained in the sand
and there have even been children playing with it," they told SUR this Monday
while the experts worked to deactivate the military flare
An ambulance crew was on standby and Guardia Civil officers kept curious onlookers at a safe distance
“It was two foreigners who come to bathe every morning at the beach who eventually told us to call the ,” admitted Cabello
Spanish Navy specialists carried out a controlled detonation of the device on Burriana beach
without any personal or material damage being recorded
was the one that caused the complete combustion of the material
generating a large column of smoke and a small fire
which took more than half an hour to extinguish
more than two hours after starting the task
taking the remains of the flare away in a steel capsule
In normal use the maritime flares can be used to aid navigation
or signal an emergency since the flares still burn even in contact with water
An expert explained to SUR that they often sink to the bottom of the sea after use
although sometimes they don't and are washed ashore by sea currents
"Every month we have a similar calls along the Spanish coastline," he added
YOU are probably familiar with Spain’s Costa Del Sol hot spots Torremolinos
Pronounced Ner-ha, the former fishing village, backed by the Sierra Almijara, lies around 50 minutes’ drive east of Malaga and is a little more under-the-radar than its built-up neighbours
the promise of 20C days and claims that it is one of the most scenic resorts on the Andalusian coast
The picturesque town is home to a number of beaches
Even when I visited in low season it had a buzz, with games of volleyball on the beach and paddleboarders gliding across the sparkling sea
A short stroll from the beach took me to Balcon de Europa
cliffside promontory with mountain and sea views and the 17th-century Church of El Salvador
ice cream parlours open late and cool bars
What’s really great is that it’s delightfully warm, even in winter, plus the atmosphere is charming and unmistakably Spanish, with all ages congregating to create the magic.
When it comes to Spain, of course, good food is to be expected and there are so many great places to eat in Nerja that you’ll almost certainly be loosening your belt by mid-holiday.
As I walked along the seafront I spotted Chiringuito Mauri, a rustic beachside restaurant serving smoked sardines and paella cooked on a converted fishing boat. It’s a great option if you fancy something easy and local, dished up in an informal setting.
A resident tipped me off about the mouthwatering one served there
tucked away down a side street off Balcon de Europa
which is one of the prettiest places in town for lunch — think delicious salads served open-air beside a fountain and wall of roses
And further down the boardwalk is Rincon del Sol
a stylish restaurant and beach club offering local snacks like garlic octopus
best enjoyed at sunset with a glass of sangria
from Ferrero Rocher to bubblegum and marshmallow
and they even dip the cone in chocolate for the ultimate indulgence
around a 25-minute walk along the seafront from the centre of town
two bedrooms and balcony — perfect for families or groups of friends
sandy beach with plenty of loungers and excellent buffets
lunch and dinner are served in the same restaurant — bag a seat in the conservatory for a lighter
the vast swimming pool with a bridge to the beach looks enticing but is icy cold
It took Wim Hof-style breath work to even attempt getting in and
If you’re looking to stay somewhere more intimate in the centre of town
whitewashed villas are sure to float your boat

The minister for the Interior has confirmed that a judge has now taken over the investigation into some members
of two local councils and the dumping of untreated sewage in nearby waterways or the sea
"It's early days and we'll see what the outcome is."
The Guardia Civil's environmental protection unit
has been leading an inquiry since November 2017 into some public officials
initially at Coín and Nerja councils and more recently extending into Alhaurín el Grande
have hit back saying that it isn't their town halls' job to treat waste if the Junta de Andalucía regional government hasn't provided the treatment plants to do it
Spain has been fined by the EU for continuing to allow some of its councils to dump untreated waste
The current investigation stems from a complaint by green action group
claiming that councils were committing fraud by adding a sewage-treatment levy to people's water bills even though no treatment was going on
The levy is passed on by the town halls to the Junta de Andalucía
should be getting on with putting in the missing treatment works
councillors and public officials in Nerja and Coín have been questioned by police
The complaint was originally against five local urban areas where waste went untreated
but with a new treatment plant now open at Guadalmansa
only three town halls are apparently now flouting a 2001 law for municipalities with populations over 15,000 that says they should have treatment plants in place
police say waste is being dumped in protected tributaries of the Pereilas river
Most towns and villages in the Guadalhorce valley
taken on a role in the new Junta de Andalucía
said that in 2010 "the Junta promised 47 sewage treatment plants paid for by the water-bill levy
The planned lower Guadalhorce treatment plant for Coín
untreated sewage is still pumped into the sea at three points
Two pipes offshore opposite Burriana and Torrecilla beaches and one closer to shore near the Maro cliffs
"It's a municipal responsibility once the infrastructure is in place
but not before," saying she was surprised by the inquiry and that she would tell that to the judge if asked
work on a treatment plant started in 2014 and it should have been up and running three years ago
however constructors' financial problems and differences within the council have stopped it coming into service
is still in the early stages and has not yet been passed to a judge
