the crew of the Philippine Coast Guard cutter BRP Cabra narrowly averted a head-on collision with an aggressive China Coast Guard cutter
BRP Cabra intercepted the China Coast Guard cutter CCG-3302 at a position about 85 nautical miles off the coast of Luzon
CCG-3302 is the latest in a string of Chinese government vessels that have been dispatched to patrol the Philippines' coastal waters
asserting Chinese law enforcement jurisdiction in an area about 500 nautical miles from mainland China
Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea as its own
including large sections of its neighbors' exclusive economic zones.
"The 44-meter BRP Cabra boldly confronted the larger 99-meter CCG vessel
asserting its rightful presence within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone," the PCG said in a statement Saturday.
PCG spokesman Commodore Jay Tarriela said that the CCG-3302 had engaged in "reckless and dangerous maneuvers," and nearly carried out a head-on collision with BRP Cabra
Only the skill of the PCG crew prevented a collision
CCG-3302 retreated further from Luzon's shores by about 10 nautical miles
It continues its "illegal patrol," he said
and BRP Cabra remains on scene to monitor it
The pushback is intended to prevent the "normalization of unlawful activities" by the Chinese government in the Philippine EEZ.
Tensions between the Philippines and China are running higher than usual, and not just in the South China Sea. Philippine police forces have arrested 18 Chinese nationals in four separate busts since the start of the year on espionage charges, including five who were detained for allegedly spying on U.S
The Armed Forces of the Philippines has also advised its forces to be prepared for the possibility of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. If this occurred, AFP troops would be needed for an evacuation of Philippine overseas workers: an estimated 250,000 Filipinos are employed in the Taiwanese economy, and would have to be brought back to safety across the Strait of Luzon.

The Catalan band Sopa de Cabra has teamed-up with Santi Balmes, the lead singer of Love of Lesbian, for a new song titled 'Data límit'.
The new song combines the "introspection" usually found in Sopa de Cabra's songs and the "plethoric lyrics" written by Santi Balmes.
This song is part of Sopa de Cabra's new album called 'Ànima', set to be released on Friday November 15, where every song is a collaboration with other artists.
Along with every song collaboration there is a videopodcast series called 'Bull d'ànima' about the recording process of this album.
In addition, the Catalan band will start on Tuesday at Palau de la Música a tour of the whole album.
Sopa de Cabra is a Catalan music group from Girona, in northern Catalonia, that was active from 1986 to 2002, and reunited in 2015.
It is one of the most influential groups of the Catalan rock movement that started in the 20th century. The band has created songs such as 'Camins' or 'L'Empordà' that have become intergenerational staples in Catalan music.
Throughout their career, the band has recorded 17 albums, including both studio and live records. One of their albums, 'Ben Endins', is the most sold Catalan pop-rock album.
Love of Lesbian is a Catalan indie pop band that sings in Spanish founded in 1997.
The group has ten studio records and was nominated at the MTV European Music Awards for the Best Spanish Act category in 2012.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) continues to shadow Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) fleet 5901
also known as ‘The Monster,’ as it lingers in the high seas within Manila’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) as of Tuesday morning
PCG spokesman Commodore Jay Tarriela said BRP Cabra (MRRV-4409) maintained its vigilant monitoring of the foreign vessel as it entered its third consecutive day of illegal presence in Philippine waters
“Observations reveal that the CCG vessel’s erratic movements indicate it is not engaged in innocent passage
but rather asserts that it is conducting a law enforcement operation
claiming jurisdiction over these waters as belonging to the People’s Republic of China,” Tarriela said
the crew of BRP Cabra remained steadfast in challenging this assertion
diligently tailing and shadowing CCG-5901 to uphold Philippine sovereign rights
“This unwavering commitment reflects the guidance of Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan
emphasizing the importance of persistently confronting the illegal presence of the People’s Republic of China and ensuring the safety and security of Filipino fishermen operating in the area,” he added

Media and journalism can be a high-stress industry to work in
But the extent of the problem and its long-term consequences on journalists are not always fully acknowledged.
Mar Cabra found out the hard way.
an organisation whose goal is to promote a healthier way of working in newsrooms around the world.
I spoke with Cabra about her own experience and about the steps managers can take to prevent and address burnout in their teams.
Can you start by telling us about your own experience with burnout following your reporting on the Panama Papers investigations
and your path towards founding the Self-Investigation?
I was at the height of my professional career
I was exhausted physically and emotionally
and I was in a very negative mood all the time.
I didn't know what was happening to me – I just knew that I needed to quit my job to save myself
I saw a specialist who told me that what had happened to me had a name: burnout.
Burnout is a work-related condition caused by excessive and accumulated stress over too long a period. It took me quite a long time to recover from my burnout
I realised that I could turn this difficult experience into a learning lesson for myself and others – which is when I co-founded The Self-Investigation.
We know that tight deadlines and intense pressure tend to lead to high stress
but these are often an unavoidable part of journalistic work
especially for those of us who work in breaking news
Can you share one key practical tip for journalists seeking to protect their mental health during these intense periods?
like when we are working on deep-dive investigative stories
But in both cases runners rest after a big challenge.
Let's learn from athletes and intentionally incorporate rest whenever a big sprint or marathon is over
It’s also important to incorporate rest in small doses every day throughout the workday
This means taking regular breaks – especially breaks from the screen
Journalists should make time to do things that calm down their nervous system
like going for short walks.
We know that managers often play a crucial role in shaping the dynamics of their teams
How can they foster a team culture that encourages journalists to prioritise their mental health
without compromising their work?
A. As a former data journalist, let me give you some stats: studies have shown that managers have as much of an impact on people's mental health as their spouses
it’s important to acknowledge that you do have a big responsibility. And part of your responsibility as a leader is to recognise the signs when your team members are not doing well.
Take the time to notice if someone’s usual behaviour is shifting in some way – whether they are withdrawing from work
It’s also important to remember that burnout is typically misidentified as underperformance
Look out for these signs by checking in regularly
I truly believe that one of the key skills a manager needs to have is basic mental health literacy.
What responsibility do news organisations have in addressing and mitigating burnout among their employees?
A crucial thing to remember is that burnout is not an individual capacity issue
this person just couldn't cope” or “What's wrong with me
Why did I burn out and not my other colleagues?”
The reality is that all organisations have a duty of care towards their employees – and not doing anything until it is too late is not duty of care
There are preventative steps that can and should happen at an organisational level
including providing staff with adequate mental health training
as well as access to mental health resources
The responsibility shouldn’t rest only on the manager.
You’ve often talked about how newsroom managers must also protect their own mental health
What tips do you have for managers seeking to draw boundaries for themselves while also looking out for their team
There is definitely a tendency for some newsroom leaders to protect their teams but forget to protect themselves
It’s no coincidence that managers – and especially middle managers – are among the first ones to burn out
because there is often a “sandwich effect,” where they are being squeezed for time and energy by the top leaders and squeezed by their team as well.
remember: you are as important as the team
and you can’t be switched ‘on’ all the time and available for everyone at any moment.
And one of the best ways to ensure that is to very intentionally organise your team's digital communications channels
This means taking the time to sit down with your team to discuss expectations of response.
One thing that some leaders find helpful is to create a ‘communications charter’ with their team to decide collectively how and when each digital channel should be used
Maybe you decide that the team will only respond to emails during working hours and WhatsApp is only used for emergencies – the specifics can vary depending on the team
but the idea is to set clear boundaries.
our message at the Self-Investigation is that we all need to start creating a healthier culture of what it means to be a journalist
and as an industry as a whole.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported the BRP Cabra successfully prevented a larger Chinese ship from approaching the Philippine coastline in Zambales on Sunday
despite its smaller size compared to the China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel 3103
has been successful in preventing the Chinese vessel from advancing closer to the coast of Zambales,” said the PCG in a statement
“The PCG vessel has maintained the China Coast Guard vessel to keep a distance of 90-100 nautical miles away from the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).”
BRP Cabra measures only 44 meters in length
seemingly acting as a “supporting vessel” for CCG-3103
was observed a few nautical miles away from CCG-3103
The PCG reaffirmed its commitment to challenging the unauthorized presence of CCG vessels in Philippine waters
“The PCG will not allow China to alter the status quo by encroaching closer to the coastline of Zambales
Our continued presence serves as a clear demonstration of our commitment to upholding our sovereign rights and a steadfast stance against any violations of international law
all while prioritizing a peaceful approach,” said the PCG.
PCG reported that China employed a Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) to harass Philippine vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS)
PCG Spokesperson for WPS Commodore Jay Tarriela said that a CCG vessel with hull number 3103 used the LRAD to intimidate BRP Cabra and block its approach
PCG crew members described China’s acoustic device “as producing high decibel levels that can be painful and damaging to hearing,” he said
“Despite the harassment and the intimidating presence of the Chinese monster ship
BRP Cabra remains committed to its mission,” he said
LRADs are specialized loudspeakers that can emit sound at a high enough volume to cause damage to eardrums as well as permanent hearing loss.
China has previously employed water cannons and engaged in “dangerous maneuvers” against Philippine vessels in the WPS

The Senate defense panel chairman on Monday assailed the China Coast Guard’s latest stunt after its boats conducted reckless maneuvers that put in peril the Philippine Coast Guard’s BRP Cabra.
Over the weekend, Estrada presided as chair during Saturday’s Asean+3 meeting, in the ongoing 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The meeting served as a platform for dialogue and cooperation among the parliaments of Asean member states and their three dialogue partners—China, Japan, and South Korea—to foster regional collaboration, address shared challenges, and promote sustainable development, peace, and security in the Asia-Pacific region.
Also at the meeting, Estrada sought support for the Philippines’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2027-2028 term, aiming to represent Southeast Asia and smaller nations on security concerns and global cooperation.

This restaurant is beautiful and, like any child of Beyonce and Jay Z, destined to be popular and successful from the moment it arrived on this earth. The only unappealing thing about Cabra is that it’s filled with trend-seeking tourists staying at The Hoxton hotel. But as soon as you start eating the food, you completely forget that someone’s Away luggage rolled over your foot on the elevator ride up here.

China Coast Guard (CCG) patrol vessel 5901
dubbed as ‘The Monster,’ remains in the Luzon coast with its whereabouts last monitored near Lubang Island in Occidental Mindoro
The PCG through BRP Cabra (MRRV 4409) continues to actively monitor the mammoth CCG fleet after its presence was detected and verified using Canada’s dark vessel detection (DVD) system over the weekend
it is 80 nautical miles away from Lubang Island
Occidental Mindoro,” said PCG spokesperson for West Philippine Sea (WPS) Commodore Jay Tarriela in an interview
‘The Monster’ was detected about 54 nautical miles in Capones Island
Zambales last Saturday before moving to the northern part of the province on Sunday—well within the Philippines’ 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ)
and the PCG Caravan aircraft to monitor and challenge the vessel’s presence
asserting that it was operating inside the Philippine EEZ
Tarriela noted that the vessel has not harassed Filipino fishermen so far.
“The CCG vessel has been challenged regarding its illegal presence
emphasizing that it lacks the legal authority to operate within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone,” said Tarriela in a post on X late Sunday

Rip.ie, The Irish Times Building, 24-28 Tara Street, Dublin 2, Ireland
As they carried the coffin into the church
that old velvety voice slipped from the speakers and a comfortingly familiar song filled the air
The significance of the words were lost on no one
After singing about it for almost 60 years
returning to where it all started at the end of a long and hugely successful showbiz career
He died a week ago in St Vincent’s hospital at the age of 88
“And would you believe it,” said Fr Brian D’Arcy to the packed congregation
“Dickie is being buried on Frank Sinatra’s birthday.”
The venue was the Church of the Most Precious Blood in Dublin’s Cabra west
Dickie sang there in the choir when he was a boy and went on to become one of Ireland’s greatest and most enduring entertainers
A superstar of the country’s transformative showband boom in the 1960s and 1970s
he was still going strong until a couple of years ago
“He was always proud to say: I’m Richard Rock from the Dingle Road in Cabra west”
who became unofficial chaplain to the showband world when a young priest
He recalled how Dickie rose to stardom in very different times
when society was closed and inward looking and young people were yearning for excitement and modernity
they lifted that veil of darkness from around us.”
even if there was a cheerfully resigned spirit of the last hurrah among surviving stalwarts of those long-gone heady days of rock and roll
[ Funeral of ‘eternal legend’ Dickie Rock attended by hundreds in DublinOpens in new window ]
Dickie played his part right up to the end
As old friends and even older neighbours gathered in the wintry chill outside the church
the hearse bearing his remains swept through the gates
It was a gleaming 1947 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith
with whitewall tyres and oodles of attitude – a proper showbiz entrance
Sarah-Jane and Peter alongside his grandchildren and his brother and sisters
Dickie’s beloved wife Judy died two years ago and their son Joseph died in 1992
As locals watched the family from a respectful distance
the same comment was repeated again and again
[ In pictures: Dickie Rock’s funeralOpens in new window ]
Later, Peter would deliver a moving eulogy and a touching insight into the family man rather than the performer. He and his siblings are so proud of their father, “Proud of everything you achieved, proud of the man you were and proud to call you our father. We will miss you every single day but we take great comfort knowing you’re with mum and Joseph walking every step of the way again in peace, in love, just as it was always meant to be.”
He read two of his Dad’s love letters to Judy when they were engaged to be married – one sent from Manhattan, the other from Miami.
The church was packed and the stage was set – wreaths along the walls, twinkling Christmas trees on either side of the altar and a lovely crib. The old troupers from back in the day arrived, all nattily dressed, as might be expected. Dickie was always impeccably turned out, it was noted by a number of the speakers.
He “would be delighted to see a full house for his last gig”, remarked Fr Brian.
And the punters almost got the full two hours too. It was a great funeral. The music was ace. Red Hurley was in fine voice.
But Richard Rock was the star. After the communion, Dickie’s son sang a song his father had recorded – the Carl Sigman classic Till.
It was a powerful performance and emotional moment, the father’s voice coming through magnificently in the son’s.
When he finished on a passionate crescendo, there was hardly a dry eye in the house. The congregation responded with a standing ovation. Richard’s siblings ran inside the altar rail and the family embraced.
Later, broadcaster and showband member Ronan Collins spoke about Dickie’s career. “He was the eternal professional,” he said, and “the king of Cabra”.
For a final bow, as the mourners filed out, another hit from Cabra’s regal crooner boomed out. “From the candy store on the corner, to the chapel on the hill...” Or the church on Fassaugh Avenue, to be precise.
In the pews, women who may once have rocked beehive hairdos, miniskirts and wet-look boots were just happy to sing along, do the arm actions and nearly swivel their hips.
The showbiz crowd, walking sticks and everything, all but bounced down the church steps.
“Dickie sang on those steps,” Joe Duffy told us. “We did a live performance with him – 75 minutes, one after the other. I think it was his birthday and we asked him did he want the concert in Cabra, so we had it there ... and he filled the car park and he filled the church.”
And even now, in death, Dickie Rock is still filling the church and still doing his best to send them home sweatin’.
Cult-favorite coffee shop La Cabra offers a stunning $5 cardamom bun
Some folks like to freshen up the stale air in their apartments with $70 Diptyque candles, cut flowers, or burning sticks of palo santo. All are compelling ideas, though during this third pandemic winter I tend to prefer a more edible option. I like to drop by La Cabra in the East Village
Green cardamom — as opposed to the muskier black variety used to season lamb and other meats — packs a complex citrus scent whose precise aromas can be tough to pin down
can recall the eucalyptus punch of a steam sauna
or the resinous perfume of a Christmas tree
It’s the type of multi-layered olfactory experience you might expect from a composed
it’s just par for the course at $5 per bun
whose triple trussing of dough halfway down makes it look like a danish in a straight jacket
which is something you realize when you get there and it’s (temporarily) sold out
an acclaimed Nordic roaster with multiple shops in Denmark — along with outposts in Dubai and Bangkok — rolled into Manhattan’s East Village late last year with serious coffee cred
utilizing a light roasting style for clear
Patrons drink them out of handleless earthenware cups while
Smart diners will also do some pastry eating. The growing chain opened with Jared Sexton at the helm, a very capable alum of Bien Cuit, Pain D’Avignon, and Dominique Ansel
a ham-and-cheese croissant so light it almost seems to hover in mid-air
and I’ve heard folks wax poetic about his rye tart
decked out with a dollop of white chocolate panna cotta
In the minimalist space — I’ve visited insurance agencies with more physical product on display — a line of dapper folks in Canada Goose jackets and other chic outerwear might snake out the door
the shop still boasted an ample supply of buns around noon
though a manager told me that they can run out for roughly a half-hour at a time as the kitchen bakes more
with crowds sometimes ordering 1,000 or so buns before 2 p.m
I took my treats home, warmed them up, and then feasted. Fans of the cardamom bun from Fabrique — a Swedish bakery that can attract its own lines in Chelsea — would be well served to sample La Cabra’s
with the spice releasing a touch of its signature warmth; the ingredient
Sexton weaves cardamom into the dough itself
spreads a sugar-laced paste of the stuff around all the tight nooks and crannies before baking
then sprinkles more onto the pastry’s exterior
But here’s the thing: I find the La Cabra bun a lot more enjoyable than the cross-town competition
and also because it flaunts a more toothsome texture
While Fabrique’s pastry is reasonably light
but as you eat your way toward the interior
you get something that’s closer to a cinnamon bun
an Italian-American garlic knot in terms of its heft
There is no shortage of cultured butter in the dough
but what you detect most of all is a lean muscularity
but it doesn’t burden your insides with too much dairy fat
And it lets you breathe in the scent of a coniferous forest for a few short minutes
You can probably guess the verdict: I’m calling the bun a BUY
Consider pairing it with a woodsy and acidic Ethiopian pour over (Nansebo
$6) to cut tame some of the oversized flavors
Buy, Sell, Hold is a column from Eater New York’s chief critic Ryan Sutton where he looks at a dish or item and decides whether you should you buy it
The Top Chef star’s new rooftop restaurant opens today atop the Hoxton Hotel
Partners Rob Katz and Kevin Boehm of the Boka Group are once again backing the new Cabra
which will follow Izard down a Peruvian path to dinnertime dishes like quinoa and tuna salad
avocado dip with taro and sweet potato chips
and heartier mains like skirt steak saltado
and lots of roast fish and chicken to share
A full bar is also available from beverage director Daniel Dooreck
and lots of local and Peruvian beers and wine
Cabra opens today atop the Hoxton Hotel in Downtown
with an extension to midnight on Friday and Saturday night
“If they can maintain a skatepark in Ballyfermot
why can’t they do it in Cabra?” asked Green Party Councillor Feljin Jose
From when Oisín MacInnes was 11 years old to when he was 13
he used to skateboard at the local skatepark in Cabra every day after school
it was the closest one to my house,” says MacInnes
who now works in High Rollers Skate Store in Aungier Street
Young people on scooters also used the facility at Cabra Parkside Community Sports Centre
Then the council closed the Cabra skatepark suddenly
“I was pretty upset when it happened,” MacInnes says
He wasn’t the only one. A petition in February 2020 calling on the council to re-open the skatepark gathered 274 signatures
At a meeting of the council’s Central Area Committee on Tuesday, Green Party Councillor Feljin Jose proposed a motion calling on the council to reopen it
A written response to Jose’s motion from the council executive
said the council had closed the skatepark “on health and safety grounds
There were also access issues (people had to get to it through the sports centre) and some people were not using safety equipment
says an email Jose received from a council official in November
founder of Irish skateboarding magazine Goblin
“The Cabra one was not designed or built well enough to pass the test of time”
Halton says the council should rebuild a new
better-maintained skatepark on the current site
Councils around the country are working on plans for skateparks and the biggest challenge is usually identifying suitable locations
the majority of the councillors on the committee declined to support Jose’s motion calling for the Cabra skatepark to be reopened
At the Cabra Parkside Community Sports Centre
there are multiple grass pitches for soccer and GAA
and a small astroturf pitch – right beside the long-closed skatepark
the plan was to replace it with a multi-use games area
a small pitch that can also be used to play basketball
according to the executive’s written response to Jose
The council hasn’t done that in the years since it closed the skatepark
“There are loads of football pitches already,” he says
After the council closed his local skatepark
he then had to cycle 4km to Fairview to skateboard
says the council should rebuild a new skatepark on the site
“Ballyfermot skatepark has been an overwhelming success story,” he says
The higher-quality builds are a better way to spend money because they last much longer
The main thing is to use concrete as in Ballyfermot not metal
“They are always going to have more wear and tear.”
Ballyfermot’s park also has high-quality design and is open-access to users throughout the day
Most major towns in Ireland will be getting skateparks in the coming years
“The main difficulty with getting skateparks built around the country is land,” he says
“Skateparks are very attractive places for teenagers to go,” he says
they have the precedent of it there before.”
says there are no skateboarding facilities nearby
so young people would come from surrounding areas too
to use the skatepark on boards and BMX bikes
said “If they can maintain a skatepark in Ballyfermot
He said the council is considering opening a brand-new skatepark in the neighbouring suburb in Finglas
Why not renovate the existing facility in Cabra as well
“I think we need to provide a wide diversity of activities,” says Jose
But at Tuesday’s Central Area Committee meeting
most local councillors didn’t support his motion
saying there were good reasons why the Cabra skatepark was closed
there have been calls from some residents recently to “reinstate” the Cabra skatepark
said Fine Gael Councillor Colm O’Rourke at the meeting
But “We have to remember that there were calls previously when it was in use
Sinn Féin Councillor Séamas McGrattan said there were a couple of incidents at the skatepark when it was open where people were injured
Dublin City Council didn’t respond to a query as to how it deals with safety issues at its other skateparks
McGrattan also questioned whether there was demand for a skatepark in the area
But the council didn’t maintain the facility well
The skatepark was not well-used by the time it was shut
“So I’d be reluctant to put in so much money.”
said the council should carry out a consultation and perhaps work towards some kind of compromise
Fianna Fáil Councillor John Stephens said he supported a use other than skateboarding for the site
“We have to use that in a proper and constructive way.”
McGrattan too suggested another use for the site might be better
There is massive demand for indoor sports facilities so the council might need to extend the sports centre building at that location instead
The council is currently carrying out an audit of sports facilities across the city to identify needs
and the best use of that space in Cabra should be examined carefully by that committee as part of that process

The Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) vessel 5901 remains within the Philippine exclusive economic zone (EEZ) as of Monday
following its departure from Capones Island in Zambales over the weekend
According to monitoring conducted by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel BRP Cabra (MRRV-4409)
the CCG 5901 has been in the EEZ for three days
spokesperson of the PCG for the West Philippine Sea national task force said its erratic movements suggest that it is not engaged in innocent passage but instead conducting a law enforcement operation
He pointed out that its lingering presence is an assertion of jurisdiction over these waters
which China claims as part of its territory
The PCG continues to monitor the situation and asserts the Philippines’ sovereign rights within its EEZ
including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)
the crew of BRP Cabra has remained steadfast in challenging this assertion
diligently tailing and shadowing CCG 5901 to uphold Philippine sovereign rights,” Commodore Jay Tarriela said in a post on his X account
“This unwavering commitment reflects the guidance of Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan
emphasizing the importance of persistently confronting the illegal presence of the People’s Republic of China and ensuring the safety and security of Filipino fishermen operating in the area,” he added
Tarriela said the PCG reaffirms its dedication to protecting the nation’s maritime interests and will continue to monitor the activities of the CCG’s illegitimate presence

John F. Cabra, ’88, ’96, professor of creativity and change leadership at Buffalo State College
has advised scientists working on space research
While he doesn’t have expertise in any of those disciplines
he does possess a valuable skill that scientists and other professionals seek—the ability to creatively solve problems
and find ways for disparate voices to work together
“My job is to make sure that these folks are engaged in a creative process that will lead to cutting-edge ideas that have wide-ranging impact,” said Cabra
who has taught creativity at Buffalo State since 2006
Last August, the National Science Foundation (NSF) invited Cabra to return as a team science faculty member to support the second phase of its NSF Convergence Accelerator Program
which uses a multidisciplinary approach to find solutions to societal challenges
such as harnessing big data and using AI to connect workers with the jobs of the future
and Cabra anticipates returning for the third cohort later this year
“Understanding the science behind creativity gives you the confidence to face volatile
and complex situations without becoming daunted.”
He’s also worked in recent years with NASA and the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System, among others. Cabra became involved with the scientific organizations through the international consulting firm Knowinnovation (KI)
founded by creativity alumnus Andy Burnett
Burnett asked Cabra to join the organization as a trainer and facilitator in 2010
Cabra has contributed to more than 30 projects
they facilitated a three-day “ideas lab” for the scientists
“We took them through all the stages of the creative process
and brought in provocateurs who would help people to disconfirm their thinking in some way,” he said
“The goal was for them to think outside their training and previous paradigm
and to ultimately create research proposals that get funded.”
the scientists have reported another tangible benefit of the consultants’ work—better communication with one another
“They compare our workshops with their typical meetings
filled with lots of arguments among dominant people with loud voices,” Cabra said
“We level the playing field with a democratic process.”
They also used many of the exercises used in Buffalo State’s International Center for Studies in Creativity
such as reframing problems by using open-ended questions
Cabra discovered the power of creativity decades ago
He entered Buffalo State as an undergraduate in the 1980s
lecturer and former associate professor of creative studies
Cabra decided to add a minor in creativity
“I would not have had the kind of career success I’ve enjoyed without that minor,” he said
He had the opportunity to put that idea into practice early on as a training and organizational development manager at American Airlines in Miami
It was peak travel season when the vice president for his division called Cabra with a thorny problem
“Floor agents were not treating customers the way he wanted,” Cabra said
although I’d never done anything like that before
I knew we needed a process that was more ethereal
He ran a series of workshops where he asked employees to share stories of success in their jobs and imagine ways to find more of it
“People left the meetings on such a natural high,” Cabra said
“The VP called me a couple of weeks later and said people were on fire
Cabra knew he wanted to delve deeper into the creativity discipline
so he returned to Buffalo State in the mid-’90s to pursue a master’s in creative studies (now creativity and change leadership)
After earning a doctorate in organizational psychology in 2006 from the University of Manchester in Manchester
he began sharing his passion for creativity in the classroom
He’s also shared his expertise with companies such as IBM
and Coca-Cola; universities such as Drexel
and Harvard; and government entities such as the U.S
One of his favorite consultant assignments was with the Pew Charitable Trusts in October 2019
Scientists from different disciplines were discussing a climate change challenge—marine species were migrating to waters they hadn’t in the past
the participants came up with great proposals,” he said
“And stakeholders with deep pockets were on hand
A good number of the proposals got funded because they were pleased with the presentations they saw.”
Despite the whirlwind of work in recent months
He just submitted a proposal to the NSF on behalf of Buffalo State
in partnership with California State University
he would support research to improve remote STEM classes that serve many minority students
as well as deliver creative problem-solving training for students and weave creativity skills into the curriculum for faculty
“Working with these organizations continues to motivate me because we’re helping scientists to have the kind of engaging conversations that result in interdisciplinary breakthroughs,” he said
“These lead to the formation of innovative research that helps address wicked problems that can make an impact on millions of lives.”

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) through its patrol vessel BRP Cabra (MRRV-4409) continues to shadow and push back a 134-meter China Coast Guard (CCG) ship off the coast despite adverse conditions at sea
the PCG said BRP Cabra braved waves measuring five to eight feet high to confront CCG vessel with bow number 5303
The foreign ships were patroling the coastal waters of Zambales illegally
“CCG-5303 has been successfully pushed back to approximately 95 nautical miles off the coast of Zambales,” PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea (WPS) Commodore Jay Tarriela reported in an X post
Tarriela noted that BRP Cabra shall remain steadfast in its mission to assert the Philippines’ sovereign rights over WPS
in accordance with domestic and international maritime laws
also known as the “monster ship,” was spotted 60.6 nautical miles away from the Paracel Islands
The vessel has reportedly been present in the western section of the Philippine exclusive economic zone (EEZ) since December 2024
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) likewise noted last Wednesday the presence of three Chinese vessels within the Philippine EEZ during joint patrols conducted alongside Canadian and US counterparts
the Philippine Navy expressed support for Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino’s proposal to establish a dedicated WPS Command
Philippine Navy spokesperson for WPS Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad said this recommendation is “well received” by the military
“It (Tolentino’s proposed WPS command) is being considered right now how that will fit in with the AFP,” Trinidad said during a press conference in Manila
The Navy official noted that the AFP already has different unified commands that are tasked to secure not only the WPS
but also other Philippine-claimed features that are being disputed by China
The Palawan-based Western Command (WesCom) is in charge of the military operations in the WPS
while the Northern Luzon Command (NolCom) oversees Bajo de Masinloc (Scarborough or Panatag Shoal) and the Philippine Rise
The East Village outpost also boasts a bakery helmed by a Bien Cuit alum
Acclaimed Danish coffee company La Cabra — a supplier to multiple Michelin-starred restaurants in Denmark — is making its debut in the United States
The European coffee brand is launching in New York City on October 1
Nordic roasters such as Norway’s Tim Wendelboe
and fellow Danish roaster Coffee Collective are generally renowned by coffee cognoscenti as among the best in the world
with intensive sourcing practices and a trademark light roasting style that have greatly influenced the American coffee scene over the last decade
La Cabra is the first of these to set down permanent roots in the U.S
La Cabra will be serving coffee made from beans typically roasted at least three weeks in advance — as compared to the typical 10-14 day window at many cafes — as the company will be shipping its in coffee from Copenhagen
La Cabra claims this will give the light-roasted beans more time to release carbon dioxide
and “the coffees are brighter and clearer and ultimately easier to have a conversation about,” says La Cabra founder and CEO Esben Piper
The team knows that their methods are unique among most other coffee roasters in the city
“I think New York coffee has been maybe coasting for a little bit,” says La Cabra’s general manager and head of coffee Ian Walla
“What we’re doing here is taking a chance by doing things in a very different way
And if we can inspire the rest of the city to do the same
I think it would be a very positive change.”
The East Village shop will be selling pour-over coffees that range from $6 to $9; batched brews that start at $3.50 per cup; and a few standard espresso drinks
The shop also stocks retail boxes of coffee priced at $18 to $22
La Cabra will offer a daily spread of cardamom buns

BRP Cabra stood its ground over the weekend against China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel 3105
the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported on Saturday
PCG said the Philippines’ 44-meter multi-role response vessel maintained its position about 95 nautical miles against the 130-meter-wide CCG ship from the coast of Zambales
BRP Cabra was sent to oppose the illegal presence of Chinese vessels within the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)
China through its naval assets has been operating against domestic and international laws
PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan reiterated that the deployment of Philippine vessels aims to prevent any attempts by China to alter the status quo or normalize its incursions
“We will not allow any foreign power to encroach upon our territory
The PCG will continue to deploy vessels to ensure the protection of our waters and to prevent any attempts to change the status quo,” he said.
The PCG reiterated that the presence of CCG vessels violates international maritime law
Despite adverse weather conditions and a significant size disadvantage
the crew of BRP Cabra remained steadfast in protecting Philippine waters and securing the livelihoods of Filipino fishermen
The PCG reaffirmed its commitment to upholding President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive that not a single square inch of Philippine territory will be surrendered
