Manuel Caceres, the drum-pounding Spanish football superfan known worldwide as "Manolo el del Bombo", died on Thursday at the age of 76, silencing the rhythmic heartbeat that had accompanied Spain national team for over four decades
With his trademark oversized Basque beret and red number 12 shirt
Caceres became as much a fixture at Spanish matches as the players themselves - a percussive national treasure whose relentless drumming provided La Roja's unofficial soundtrack
"My aim is to retire after 12 World Cups, which will make me 77, if Spain qualify for all of them. I'll be there even if I have to go with a walking stick," the Spanish fan told Reuters at the 2006 World Cup in Germany
His love affair with the team began when he first travelled abroad to watch Spain play in Cyprus in 1979
The 1982 World Cup on home soil transformed him from a passionate supporter into a cultural phenomenon
with his drum becoming inextricably linked to the Spanish footballing identity
"I've given up everything for football - my businesses and everything - but I'm still alive
What more could I ask for?" he told Reuters at the 2018 World Cup in Russia
Such was his fame that the Spanish federation covered his travel and accommodation during the showpiece in Russia
recognising a man whose celebrity often rivalled the players' themselves
"One of our most loyal fans has passed away
someone who was always with us through thick and thin
who ran a bar opposite the Mestalla stadium for more than 30 years
made big personal and financial sacrifices in service to what he called the great passion of his life: his national team
“They are afraid of us because we are not afraid.”

She’s widely respected in Honduras for reviving Lenca traditions that had partially fallen out of practice in the modern age

MLB Trade Rumors

has spent his entire career with the Angels
An international signing out of the Dominican Republic
he was added to the roster late in 2023 and got to make a very brief big league debut
Caceres stayed on the IL for the rest of the year
Across several minor league levels in 2023
he tossed 54 2/3 relief innings with a 4.12 ERA
His 34.8% strikeout rate was massive but he also gave out walks at a 13.1% clip
Some clubs may have been intrigued by the strikeouts but those free passes were concerning and his health is a question mark after missing an entire season
This is his first career outright and he has less than three years of service time
That means he doesn’t have the right to elect free agency
he’ll stick with the Angels as some non-roster depth for their pitching staff
The Angels didn’t state whether or not Caceres has received a non-roster invite to big league camp
but it’s possible he pops up in a few spring games regardless
since even those without NRIs often get brought along to fill in
Los Angeles Angels Transactions Kelvin Caceres
Hopefully he can regain his health and be ready to fill in when called up

School of Public Affairs Outstanding Graduate wants to battle scourge of illicit drugs responsible for taking thousands of lives each year
Editor’s note: This story is part of a series of profiles of notable fall 2024 graduates
Nicole Caceres had been selling T-shirts bearing her son's artwork — but she wanted to do much more to honor his memory
where she hadn’t been a student for more than 30 years
Caceres said she was determined to learn how to affect public policy that might lead to ending the scourge the illicit drug fentanyl has brought to so many families — like hers
Caceres’ son, Mathew LeBlanc, 24, died four years ago from a fentanyl overdose. An estimated 107,543 people died of drug overdoses in the United States in 2023
according to the National Center for Health Statistics at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Caceres founded a nonprofit organization named Love LeB
after a shortened version of Mathew’s last name
that is dedicated to the fight against overdose and illicit fentanyl
Sales of T-shirts featuring LeBlanc’s artwork helped fund the effort
who lived in Illinois at the time of LeBlanc’s death
He had so many talents and brought so much joy to our whole family.”
Caceres sent Love LeB T-shirts to Illinois legislators and other influential people to raise awareness of the human cost of the overdose and fentanyl epidemic
The Chicago Tribune and other Illinois media covered the story
but I realized I need to shift my focus … to be able to influence policymakers
Caceres enrolled at Arizona State University, where she will receive a bachelor’s degree in public service and public policy. And now, this fall, she'll be graduating as the School of Public Affairs Outstanding Graduate
Caceres said she chose to attend ASU because of its “stellar reputation” and the quality of its online public service and public policy degree
Her capstone project involved creating an education module designed to teach kids about overdose and illicit fentanyl and the widespread availability of fentanyl disguised as other drugs
“I was always super interested in public policy issues,” said Caceres
whose job experience included a position as a regulatory affairs manager for an Illinois telephone company and working as a paralegal
Read on to learn more about Caceres’ ASU journey
Note: Answers have been edited for length and clarity
when you realized you wanted to study the field you majored in
Answer: After living in shock for that first year (after my son’s death)
I awoke one morning and knew that I needed to educate myself and start a nonprofit organization
This devastating life event lit a fire under me to learn as much as I could about public policy
public service and the fentanyl crisis gripping our nation
Q: What’s something you learned while at ASU — in the classroom or otherwise — that surprised you
A: I learned many things during my time at ASU
The most surprising thing I learned was how resilient and dedicated I could be during what will undoubtedly be one of the worst times of my life
but now I know that there is still a purpose for me
Educating myself has become my superpower and renewed my self-confidence
one thing that stands out to me is learning about the intricacies of intergovernmental relations
such as illicit fentanyl and overdose awareness
are vast and involve multiple layers of government
From grassroots efforts to foreign affairs
this issue is complicated and presents varying opportunities to make a difference in the world
Q: Which professor(s) taught you the most important lesson while at ASU
A: I took nuggets of wisdom and knowledge from all of my professors at ASU
but the one that stands out is my senior capstone professor
She helped me take a step back from all of the ideas I have for growing my nonprofit organization and focus on only a few at a time
makes herself available and has a lot of lived experience to share
I was able to gather everything I have learned over the last few years and combine it into a senior project that I will be able to use to educate young people about the dangers of overdose and fentanyl
She helped me steer my nonprofit into a new direction and for that I am grateful
Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’d give to those still in school
A: Don't give up; don't make excuses. We tend to find time for those things that are important to us
look at everything as a learning experience
what was your favorite spot for power studying
A: My favorite spot for power studying has been my dining room table
so I needed a spot to separate work from school
I spent many late nights with papers spread across the table and clicking away at my keyboard
but I made it a priority despite life's plans
A: I plan to grow my nonprofit organization and shift my mission to one of education
youth groups and eventually policymakers in an effort to educate them. More than 110,000 people are dying every year from drugs
That's over 300 people per day. The amount of fentanyl coming into the U.S
every year is enough to kill every single person in the country
I will use my knowledge and passion to make sure people understand the magnitude of this issue
I am also exploring opportunities in my professional life
I work for a multinational energy company that is heavily focused on several policy issues such as sustainability and clean energy development
I plan to have exploratory discussions with my colleagues in governance
Q: If someone gave you $40 million to solve one problem on our planet
I would spend the money to try to solve the illicit fentanyl crisis
If I could spare even one family the heartache that I and so many others have endured

and I understood that once the pandemic ended
I needed to make some changes for my family,” Caceres said
‘sometimes you have to be like a bow and arrow – in order to go further
you have to draw back to soar forward.’ That quote stuck with me for so long
so when I told my fiancée that I needed to go back to school
Much like a bow and arrow, Caceres paused his career to focus on school full-time and raise their son while his fiancée supported them. He remembered how much he loved robotics throughout his childhood, so he decided to take a leap and pursue a degree in Information Systems Technology with a concentration in Software Engineering at Miami Dade College.
“My two best friends are software engineers – they helped me through this process,” Caceres said
“I started doing my own projects and saw the results of what I created
Throughout his time at MDC, Caceres says that his biggest resource was the efforts and opportunities the faculty and staff provided to him and his classmates – from interview prep to job-search help – with the support of Miami Tech Works‘ Miami Tech Talent Coalition
academia and community organizations creating new tech pathways for residents and students
Miami Tech Works is funded with a $10 million grant from the U.S
“MDC showed me things I wasn’t doing to differentiate myself from other candidates,” Caceres said
“Within the Information Systems Technology program
and the students are all in it together – everyone works together to meet their own goals.”
And, as part of his capstone project, he was part of the group that was selected to present their project in Chicago. Patricia Hernandez, who we recently highlighted on Refresh Miami
Their project focused on automating academic student maps to help students select the right classes
Caceres had graduated with his bachelor’s degree – making the dean’s list almost every semester
One month later, in September, he started a new job as a software engineer with XTec
an authentication and security solutions company that provides end-to-end identify management infrastructure for government and commercial enterprises
Caceres credits his time at MDC with providing him not just with theoretical knowledge
real-world skills and solutions that have been invaluable in shaping his career outside the classroom
“They didn’t just teach me how to code – they taught me how to think logically through problems,” Caceres shared
“What I love most about being a software engineer is the sense of freedom it gives me
and you break your brain finding a solution
there’s this sense of reward in seeing your creation come to life
Caceres is looking forward to continuing his journey as a software engineer in South Florida
When asked to share advice for others looking to break into the industry
“Always believe in yourself – you may have a lot of imposter syndrome
For employers: How to get involved in the Miami Tech Talent Coalition
Your involvement can make a significant difference in shaping the future of Miami’s tech industry
creating a vibrant and sustainable tech talent ecosystem

2025The preview of GLORY 98’s featured bout is powered by Unibet
After impressing on the local scene and he takes a step up to the big leagues and debuts in GLORY in 2024
With three straight impressive victories he now finds himself as a top five ranked GLORY light heavyweight on the cusp of potentially challenging for the title
This paragraph can be used to describe both Cem Caceres (18-1
18 KO) as they have mirrored their meteoric rise in the kickboxing world over the past twelve months
both top prospects are just 25 years young and have become fan favourites on the GLORY roster ever since they introduced themselves last year
Cem Caceres is now the number four ranked light heavyweight in GLORY
His fierce fighting style and devastating punching power is almost unrivalled in the modern day of kickboxing
the young Dutch-Turkish fighter joined forces with legendary trainer Mike Passenier
a pairing that instantly suited Caceres and seemingly just elevated his already aggressive style
While Caceres likes to come forward on the attack and overwhelm his opponents this is arguably one of the few things which differs him from opponent Mory Kromah
Kromah is an assassin on the feet who likes to use his range to keep people at a distance before striking with a killer blow
And this offense can come from any angle and any variety of threats from straight punches to high kicks to devastating knees
‘The Black Ghost’ loves the spotlight and the attention
His walkouts and trademark mask are part of the overall package and only seem to give him supreme confidence in the ring
This fight is a perfect representation of two of modern kickboxing’s brightest stars and one of the true best light heavyweight match-ups in the world of combat sports today
The winner will take a step forward and climb another step up the ladder towards title contention
while the loser will have the re-group and plot his new path for GLORY gold
this could be the start of a beautiful rivalry that may define a new generation

made his big league debut with the Dodgers last year
He went from Los Angeles to the Marlins via waivers late in the year and tossed another five innings for Miami
15.6% strikeout rate and 12.2% walk rate in his first 19 2/3 innings in the majors
The U.K.-born Petersen spent his career prior to last season with the Rockies and Brewers organizations
He’d joined the Dodgers on a minor league pact and posted lights-out numbers in Triple-A: 1.64 ERA
Petersen’s towering 6’7″ frame only makes his 97 mph heater and upper-80s cutter play up
last year’s huge numbers in the minors and multiple minor league option years have combined to make a popular waiver target
The Angels will be his fourth organization since September
missed the entire 2024 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn lat
He made his MLB debut with the 2023 Angels but pitched just 1 1/3 innings in that brief cup of coffee
He’s posted solid numbers in the minors with the Halos
most recently working to a combined 4.12 ERA with a 34.8% strikeout rate and 13.1% walk rate in 54 2/3 innings across three levels
That included a dominant 10-inning run in Triple-A
where he allowed just one run on five hits and five walks with 11 strikeouts
Cáceres sits 95-96 mph with his heater and couples the pitch with a curveball and changeup
He still has multiple minor league options remaining
so perhaps another club will be intrigued by the optionable power arm and place a claim or work out a small trade
but an optionable 25-year-old with a power arm and a history of missing bats is the type of prospect teams love to speculate on if they have the roster space
Los Angeles Angels Toronto Blue Jays Transactions Kelvin Caceres Michael Petersen
I was the first to discover this information this when I saw Michael Peterson at the Bass Pro Shops in Mesa the other day.
Since he hasn’t thrown any of those pitches in over a year it’s probably not that stupid of a move
Have to wonder how bad Kelvin’s injuries are
At least it ain’t Jerry “ 我亲自去了当地的麦当劳,发现两个男人身上沾满了烤罗非鱼,正在吃麦当劳鱼。太丢脸了。“ Reinsdorf
Angels will need to open up two more 40-man roster spots for Yoan Moncada and Kenley Jansen signings
Petersen’s tenure as an Angel might be a short one
Stephenson will likely go to the 60 day IL tomorrow
Don’t the Angels have a few potential 60 day candidates
Zach Neto might be another candidate for the 60-day DL
Hope Neto is back in 30 not 60 day’s

where she returned to the podium in Race 1
Photo credits: Ligier JS F4Uruguayan talent Maite Cáceres completed a stellar season in the Ligier JS F4 series by scoring a podium finish in the season finale at COTA—her fifth of the season
With an additional top-five finish in race 2 and a thrilling race 3
she clinched third place in the championship standings
It was a remarkable result for the International Motorsports racer
whose single-car team also finished third in the standings
holding their own against larger operations
after making her Formula 4 debut in 2022 in the F4 US Championship
She becomes the first woman to finish in the top three in the history of Formula Regional Americas
Having contested her first international campaign in 2023
when she moved to Europe to compete in the inaugural F1 Academy Championship
Cáceres made strides: she learned new tracks and adapted to a new car
scoring points in three rounds during her rookie season in Europe—a solid progression that surely aided her growth
Once back behind the wheel of the Ligier JS F422 machine
soon saw Cáceres establish herself as a front-runner
securing second- and third-place finishes at the season opener at NOLA Motorsports Park
The Uruguayan stepped onto the podium in the following two rounds as well
ultimately achieving a streak of eight consecutive top-five finishes
the fourth and penultimate round at New Jersey Motorsports Park in July proved to be a setback
A series of issues saw her score only 8th- and 10th-place finishes
dropping her to fifth in the standings ahead of the season finale at Circuit of the Americas
"We came into this event sitting fifth in the championship and quite far from the points
especially after a tough weekend in New Jersey"
I trained intensively—both in the gym and on the simulator—to make up for the time I wouldn’t get in the car
as I hadn’t done any testing in two and a half months"
"It was definitely a challenge to arrive at such a demanding circuit like the Circuit of the Americas without recent seat time
but it’s one of the tracks where I feel most comfortable
Experienced drivers were joining the category as well
The fifth triple-header round in fact featured almost 20 entries

which placed her International Motorsports machine—sponsored by Abitab/Supermatch—in eighth
running near the top before ultimately setting a great lap to qualify fifth
and would be starting from eighth for the opening race
ahead of new entrant Leonardo Escorpioni and Kekai Hauanio
however she would have to close a gap to Zelenka and Majman
who were trying to pull away 3 seconds up the road
while Musella continued to stretch his lead with unmatched pace
Escorpioni soon dropped down the order after a battle with Hauanio
passing both Cáceres and Szuch to push her back to eighth
Maite then had to battle with van't Pad Bosch
she started improving her lap times significantly: by the midway point
putting pressure on Parrish and joining a three-car battle that included Szuch
Cáceres had moved back to seventh after a remarkable recovery
overtaking van't Pad Bosch and climbing into sixth place
clocking a 2:16.555 on the penultimate lap

Maite Cáceres had another great chance for a strong result
she slotted into third at turn 1 and engaged in a fierce battle with Musella
swapping positions over the course of the lap
the top six cars remained closely packed as the safety car was deployed after a crash for Brad Majman at turn 3
When racing resumed with 8 minutes left on the clock
but Maite responded by improving her lap times
dipping under 2:17 for the first time in the race
with Musella pulling away to take a commanding win
she was later promoted to fifth after post-race penalties
securing valuable points as the championship fight for third tightened
things went really well—we finished on the podium in P3"

holding off Campbell and maintaining her sixth-place position
avoiding unnecessary risks and focusing on consistent pace
Hauanio fought his way back into second place
Hauanio attempted a move that resulted in contact
taking out Escorpioni and forcing Musella to take evasive action
This allowed van't Pad Bosch to inherit the lead
with Szuch in second and Cáceres climbing to fifth as the caution came out
With a one-lap shootout to decide the race
Cáceres lined up fifth for the final restart
needing to hold off Majman—who was now running in 11th—to secure third in the championship
a small mistake on the restart dropped Maite to 14th
though she was promoted to 12th after penalties
Maite Cáceres managed to secure enough points to finish third in the championship standings
just half a point ahead of Zelenka and 4 points clear of Majman
"Achieving a third place finish in the drivers’ championship is something I never thought possible"
"I was told I am the first woman in the history of the U.S
"I hope this can inspire young girls to pursue their dreams

2024As is tradition after every GLORY event
the rankings have been shuffled around this week
GLORY 94 was an incredible event who delivered despite its card suffering some last minute changes
The Lotto Arena of Antwerp was sold out and Belgian fans were able to witness some of the most entraining kickboxing in the world
GLORY 94 was marked by the rise of Cem Caceres (17-1
14 KO) who was serving as a last minute replacement in the main-event and shocked the world by knocking out Romanian powerhouse Stefan Latescu (17-4
As a result of that incredible performance
the Turkish fighter is now ranked number 4 in the GLORY rankings and has his eyes set on the very best of the light-heavyweight division
But Caceres isn’t the only light-heavyweight that impressed the masses last week-end
18 KO) produced an highlight finish for the ages against Mohamed Amine (29-9
A KO via flying knee which resonated in the entire Lotto Arena and served as a reminder that there is a new contender in town
The Black Ghost has arrived in spectacular fashion and he is now ranked number 9
looking at the rest of the rankings with ambitious eyes
there is no way to avoid talking about Nico “Big Sexy” Horta (23-9
The Cape Verdean had gained a lot of fan support when he went to distance with Levi Rigters (18-2
8 KO) in short notice back in May but few were ready for how good he would look with a full training camp
He dominated his fight against Sofian Laidouni (36-4-1
18 KO) and earned a well deserved unanimous decision
he makes his way into the heavyweight rankings entering at number 10
GLORY 94 was a crucial event for both Jay Overmeer (30-7
36 KO) as both of them were coming into Antwerp riding 3 fights losing streaks and were fighting in hopes to keep their championship dreams alive
Serkan earned a unanimous decision win to rise up to number 3 in the middleweight division and Jay beat Ismail Ouzgni (4-3
1 KO) by TKO via injury to climb back to number 5 in the welterweight rankings
Two newcomers made it into the featherweights ranking this month
Entering at number 8 is André Santos (22-2
The Portuguese made a great impression at GLORY 94 with a win over Adam El Hammouchi (20-5
Many of his fans made the trip to Antwerp and they made their voices heard all 5 minutes and 38 seconds that this fight lasted
A KO finish that puts André on the map in a division looking for some fresh blood
4 KO) may not have won his fight against Berjan Peposhi (30-4
16 KO) but he put on an incredible effort in short notice against a way bigger opponent
The crowd loved his tenacity and spectacular style and there is no doubt that the future is bright for the Moroccan fighter who is now ranked number 10 in the GLORY stands
GLORY is available to watch live on Videoland exclusively in the Netherlands

With vineyards situated in Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa
particularly around the notable village of Cenicero
no-one would doubt that Marqués de Cáceres can take pride in its vineyards
some of them more than 70 years old and situated at high altitudes
produce enviable harvests dominated by Tempranillo and Viura
Yet the winery is always keen to make the case that expertise
technology and a dedicated team are equally to thank for its award-winning wines
Founder Enrique Forner cut his teeth in the French wine industry
after his family fled during the Spanish Civil War
he brought back some of the French reverence for the expert winemaker
enlisting famed Bordeaux consultant and oenologist Émile Peynaud
Their work together set the norms for the winery: precise grape selection
sensitive use of French oak and long ageing
choosing to emphasise aromatic brightness and Tempranillo’s profile over barrel influence
Later white and rosé wines similarly prioritised vibrant primary aromas
As the company grew – it is now present in more than 120 markets – it kept true to these principles
Considered winemaking was still a central part of the high-quality process
Marqués de Cáceres broke new ground with Gaudium
the winery’s high standards and extended ageing combine
the winery’s standards are kept just as high
Grapes are harvested to a carefully devised calendar
balancing structural complexity with aromatic ripeness
Most wines undergo a long maceration to fully extract the nuanced character of the grapes
with a wealth of options in stainless steel
the team’s innovative spirit is moving beyond the search for quality wine
A sustainability drive has seen it move to renewable energy and dramatically reduce its water usage
It has been certified as a Sustainable Winery for Climate Protection – further evidence that Marqués de Cáceres has the expertise to lead in Rioja for decades to come
Patrick Schmitt MW awarded two Marqués de Cáceres wines Gold medals at The Rioja Masters 2024
A wine that never fails to deliver pleasure
Gaudium is just such a reliable blockbuster of a red
That means you can expect a concentrated core of black fruit
which is then framed by barrique-sourced flavours of toast
before the wine closes with a dry tannic grip that leaves one salivating and reaching for another hit of this wonderfully powerful
Representing an exciting addition to the range of wines from Bodegas Marqués de Cáceres is this specialist Rioja from the extremely rare Maturana grape
The wine is notable for its deep purple appearance
as well as its intense flavours of cherries
ripe fruit and spice are notes of toast and dark chocolate
with plenty of firm tannins to make the mouth water
Serve it with barbecued lamb seasoned with rosemary

"They are afraid of us because we are not afraid of them"
damming and other environmentally harmful projects
the Río Blanco community and COPINH have received numerous threats over the years
On 28 June 2009, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) put Cáceres on a list of people who were at risk during the coup, including other popular leaders, state authorities and people related to the ousted president. The following day, Cáceres was granted precautionary protection measures by the IACHR
which asked the Honduran government to guarantee her “life and personal integrity”
the IACHR had received reports that military forces had surrounded her home
a Peruvian activist who won the 2016 Goldman prize for the Americas
and police harassment for her efforts to defend her land
In a statement the day after Cáceres was murdered, the IACHR noted that only months earlier it had met with a delegation from Honduras and spoken about the risk that continued to face Cáceres
as well as “the shortcomings in the implementation of protective measures” that the state was supposed to have supplied to her
On 15 March 2016, another of Cáceres’s fellow activists, Nelson García, was shot and killed, while Lenca community members nearby were being forcefully evicted from the land. Following García’s murder, FMO, a Dutch development financier, and Finnfund, another investor, suspended their financial backing for the Agua Zarca project
but I also saw her heart planted in every struggle that COPINH has undertaken.”
and the full extent of those responsible for the killing are still at large with impunity
Caceres’s family and friends have affirmed that they want to see the masterminds behind the crime also held accountable
It was evident from the investigation that Berta suffered attempts to defame and criminalize her
aimed at harassing her to give up her struggle against development projects in Lenca lands and across Honduras
The proceedings also affirmed that Berta’s assassination took place with the knowledge and assent of other executives of DESA
In December 2019, a special report by The Intercept looked into the communication logs
SMS and WhatsApp messages extracted by the Honduran Public Prosecutor’s Office during investigations
“[t]he call log evidence was examined by an independent expert
and it showed that the assassins had communicated through a compartmentalized chain that reached the highest ranks of leadership of the company whose dam she had been protesting”
This included members of the Atala Zablah family
a powerful Honduran family with “ties to the government and the international financial industry”
COPINH’s webpage continues to follow the case and denounces the impunity that surrounds it. Marcia Aguiluz, from CEJIL, affirms that covering up for the masterminds behind the crime
may have consequences that extend far beyond Berta’s case
in a country known as one of the most lethal to environmentalists
The Misión de Observación highlights in its report that “the murder of Berta Cáceres affected both the victims directly impacted and the whole society and
the search for integral truth and justice is crucial.”

NY — An East Meadow man pleaded guilty to charges in connection with spray painting antisemitic graffiti in front of a Jewish center last April
pleaded guilty on Thursday to fourth-degree criminal mischief as a hate crime
Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said
Patino Caceres must undergo six months of bias prevention training
100 hours of community service and take a guided tour of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove
If he completes the conditions of his plea
Patino Caceres will be sentenced to a misdemeanor with three years of probation
the felony charge will remain and he'll be sentenced to five years of probation
"Antisemitism will never be tolerated by my office or by Nassau County," Donnelly said
"My prosecutors held this defendant responsible for his offensive actions with this plea to a felony hate crime
but with the understanding that punitive measures alone will not stop this intolerant behavior
It is through education and awareness that we can teach defendants about the gravity of their words and actions
Patino Caceres spray-painted several antisemitic phrases on PVC fencing of the rear yards of private homes along Merrick Avenue
The phrases included “Zionism is Nazism,” “Stop the Genocide,” “Free Palestine,” and “F*** Israel," Donnelly said
Patino Caceres also spray-painted "Free Palestine" across the front cement sidewalk of the East Meadow Beth-El Jewish Center
"I applaud District Attorney Donnelly for following through on her commitment to fighting intolerance by securing a felony hate crime for this blatant display of antisemitism," said Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin

In a dramatic turn of events at the Belize City High Court today
22-year-old Kalief Raheem Alexander Caceres
one of two men charged in the 2021 murder of Gerald Tillett Jr.
was set free after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) entered a nolle prosequi
the son of the former George Street gang leader Gerald “Shiny” Tillett Sr.
was gunned down in a style eerily similar to his father’s murder in April 2016
Caceres had been jointly charged with Leroy Smith
who at the time of the murder in 2021 was just 17
was shot and killed during a failed armed robbery in August of this year at the age of 20
He was fatally wounded after a struggle with the owner of Cambranes Shop on Freetown Road
Caceres appeared before Justice Derick Sylvester this morning
This decision effectively dropped the murder charges against Caceres
Caceres did not immediately walk out of the courtroom
Due to heightened concerns over his safety and the possibility of retaliation
escorted him from the court’s holding cell to a waiting vehicle under heavy security
His release was greeted by a heartfelt hug from his mother on the court veranda
The murder charges stemmed from the May 6
who was shot while riding his bicycle on Baghdad Street in Belize City
surveillance footage had linked Smith and Caceres to the crime
with Smith allegedly being the shooter and Caceres present at the scene
The two men were known affiliates of the Taylor’s Alley gang
and the murder was seen as part of a broader cycle of gang-related violence in the city
The Tillett family has long been intertwined with Belize’s gang conflicts
Gerald Tillett Jr.’s death mirrored that of his father

captured this stunning meteor during the night of 18—19 May 2024 (00:46 CEST 19 May / 22:46 UTC 18 May)
ESA’s planetary defenders began investigating the impact shortly after it was first reported
Their analysis of the object’s trajectory has revealed that it is likely to have been a small piece of a comet
They estimate that it flew over Spain and Portugal travelling at roughly 45 km/s (162 000 km/h) before burning up over the Atlantic Ocean at an altitude of approximately 60 km
Using data on the amount of energy released during the impact
they estimate that the object was roughly 1 m in size and had a mass of 500—1000 kg
The likelihood of any meteorites from this even being discovered is very low
This is likely because it approached Earth from a region of the sky that is particularly crowded with stars of the Milky Way galaxy

Was it an affront, a bird-brained disrespect of art? There, atop a 52-foot sculpture of car parts, pianos, computer monitors and bits of deconstructed Russian Mig-21 aircraft at Vostell-Malpartida Museum sat an enormous circle of twigs

Those elements still draw visitors to stroll through rooms of provocative artwork and across a landscape of hills
ponds and behemoth boulders that look like they might have been carelessly tossed by giants into haphazard heaps — upon which storks promptly constructed nests
The museum mostly features Vostell’s thought-provoking pieces
as well as works by contemporaries in the rebellious Fluxus movement such as Yoko Ono

Although Extremadura and Caceres may be less well-known than Spain’s hotspots
the experience they offer travelers is as rich and satisfying as any in the country
a three-Michelin-star restaurant the guidebook calls a “temple of Spanish gastronomy.”
where knowing visitors enter a side door and set coins on a “secret” turntable
We visited the statue of patron saint San Pedro de Alcantara in the pretty Plaza de Santa Maria
his bronze toes rubbed to a gleaming shine by the devoted (or seekers of luck)
Old Town is also famous for its appearance in season seven of hit drama “Game of Thrones.” Film sites include Caceres Museum, which interprets the city’s history from its Roman founding in 25 B.C., and Arco de la Estrella
the main entrance to the historic center of Caceres and the fictional gate to King’s Landing
The epic battle between Daenerys Targaryen and Jamie Lannister was set in Los Barruecos
where interpretive signs describe the battle and its filming
(Spoiler: No actual fire-breathing dragons were involved.)
My favorite stop was a contemplative break in the garden of Palace of Carvajal on Calle Amargura
sunny garden is an oasis of green within 16th-century walls; its centerpiece is a gnarled fig tree that’s hundreds of years old
Caceres easily satisfies food lovers. Inside the walls, Torre de Sande Eatery
sister restaurant to the aforementioned Atrio
bakeries and pubs line Plaza Mayor and the surrounding streets
fabulous cheeses and Spanish wines are plentiful
along with Extremadura’s heralded dish: Iberico ham from pigs that feast on sweet acorns
Visitors can (and should) round out a stay in Caceres with day trips to Merida
Monfrague National Park or the gorgeous Monastery of San Jeronimo de Yuste
