One of two men involved in a shootout in Elmira last summer will spend 15 years in state prison

The charges stem from an incident that took place July 26

Grupo Planeta recently announced it will relaunch its publishing program in the U.S
the largest Spanish-language publisher in the world
is based in Barcelona and first opened a U.S
While the Miami office still imports and distributes 600 titles a year
its U.S.-based publishing program closed in 2008 after operating for eight years
In advance of the Guadalajara International Book Fair
we talked with José Calafell Salgado about the company and its operations throughout the Americas
What is it we don’t know about Planeta’s operations in the Americas that you would like to let U.S
particularly now that you are relaunching English-language publishing
Grupo Planeta was founded more than 70 years ago and
Latin America was at the core of our founder’s business strategy
we have seven regional operations in Argentina
office to oversee our Spanish-language publishing in this territory
These offices allow us to distribute our books and content to readers in over 20 countries in the continent
Do the markets in Latin America differ from each other or those in Spain
When we talk about Latin America we are alluding to an abstract concept
each market faces its own reality and very specific challenges
This means that we have to be very creative in developing a variety of strategies and that our publishing teams must be sharp
and have a thorough understanding of their countries
Our business philosophy in the region doesn’t try to replicate the successful publishing model we have in Spain
since that model applies to a different market
Although we share best practices and common policies and strategies
we analyze the specific environment of each country and work hard to deliver the best books possible in each of them
our Latin American team looks to publish content that crosses country boundaries and is still relevant in many territories
proving that it is possible to connect different markets and readers
a goal coveted by many publishers in Spanish
Are there specific markets that have proven challenging in the recent past
a country with a very tough economic forecast
I am very proud of the talent and commitment of our local team
They have proven to be a rock despite so many difficulties
always carrying on to serve one of the stronger and most loyal reader communities in the world
where the publishing landscape is very competitive and retail is suffering tremendously due to the Covid crisis
but we are quite confident we will have an outstanding performance in the years to come
I want to share with you and your readers a dream: we long to return to Venezuela and continue our long-time publishing project in the country
We had no option but to close our office there a couple of years ago
we don’t forget our readers and authors there
How do you see Planeta competing with your main rival in the region
We focus our talent and commitment on bringing the readers the best and most innovative content
We also aim to be the best partner for our authors
And to follow this path we need to compete not only with PRH but also with other international groups and with brilliant independent publishing houses that are doing an outstanding job
not only because it makes our teams be more creative and efficient but also because it makes our professional lives richer and much more fun

The Vilamar Centre project, funded with €549,724.80 from the NextGenerationEU funds (50% of the total budget), aims to transform the pedestrian area of Calafel Beach into an open-air shopping center.
The urban environment of this beach is one of the most tourist-visited areas in Baix Penedès, and the interventions, to be carried out on Vilamar Street and the cross streets to the promenade, aim to revitalize the area's shops.
A unified image of the commercial offer will be created (with touch information rings, banners, and integrated signage), along with a mobile application to guide visitors through the establishments and help them find parking to facilitate access to this area, among other services.
Additionally, there will be a change in the waste collection service model for businesses, shifting to a door-to-door system, as well as the provision of Wi-Fi areas and rest zones.
Various types of mobile covers will also be set up to ensure shaded areas on Vilamar Centre streets, which will be installed according to the time of year.
The blaugranes marched into the final of the Spanish Super Cup thanks to a comprehensive 11-2 victory over Calafell. The game in the Pavelló Olímpic in Reus saw Edu Castro's team dominate from start to finish to book place in Sunday's title showdown.

In the second half Calafell pulled one back through Arnau Xaus but any hope of a comeback was extinguished by Pau Bargalló claimed a hat trick. The goals kept coming with Barroso scoring twice either side of a strike from Sergi Miras for Calafell. Sergi Llorca added two late strikes to book a place in Sunday's final at 12.30pm CEST against either Reus Deportiu or Liceo.

Firefighters stabilized a wildfire in the southern town of Calafell on Wednesday at 5:43 am
as was announced by the Bombers de la Generalitat firefighters
The blaze affected the mountain of Escarnosa
as well as the residential areas of Mas Mel and Bellamar
Around 30 residents were forced to evacuate on Tuesday night
Neighbors from Bellamar and Bellamel also left with their cars as several streets had to be vacated.
On Tuesday night, up to 48 different units worked to control the flames after the fire broke out around 6 pm. Among these teams, there were 70 individuals, including specialized forces in wildfires and the support team.
Some fences and gardens in the Mas Mel and Bellamar residential areas burned down. But no houses were affected by the flames.
On Wednesday morning, some residents walked around the burned area after "crossing our fingers so the fire wouldn't get in our house," Eva, one of the neighbors, said to the Catalan News Agency (ACN). Flames were at the top of the mountain, but "sparks moved quickly, starting new fires," she added.
While authorities decided to evacuate around 30 people, some people voluntarily left their homes.
"Nature is everything," Josep said. He received an alert on his mobile phone and started watering all the garden and wood elements outdoors "just to avoid any wind change made any spark burn down the house."
He switched off the electricity and moved two butane canisters before leaving and returning after midnight.
Eva also watered the garden as "the feeling was that the house could burn down at any moment." She also added wet towels on the floor to prevent smoke from entering the doors' lower gaps.
Firefighters were busy on Tuesday after fighting another wildfire in the southern area of Selva del Camp, which started around 2:30 am.
Rural agents believe the flames started after someone did not correctly extinguish a vegetation fire.
They believe around 49 hectares were affected after it was stabilized around 12 pm on Tuesday.

The traumas that can be observed in the human skeleton constitute the most direct evidence of the episodes of interpersonal violence and are frequently documented in the archaeological record since they have accompanied us throughout all periods of our history
The first cases have been dated to the Paleolithic
but it is from the Neolithic onwards then this behavior increases exponentially
or cut marks are some examples of injuries linked to violent events
determining the type of object that was used as a weapon is not always possible
A new study published these days in the International Journal of Paleopathology
carried out by research staff from the del Institut Català de Paleoecologia Humana i Evolució Social (IPHES-CERCA)
the Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and the University of Barcelona (UB)
has identified a case of cranial trauma at the site of Cova Foradada (Calafell
This is an individual of about 50 years of age
who died violently from the impact of a stone adze
and main author of the article points out that the fracture pattern observed in the cranium “has allowed us to infer the type of object that was used to cause the death of this individual
The skull was found in 1999 during a rescue excavation in the Cova Foradada
It belongs to a man about 50 years old and is part of a collective burial from the Late Neolithic – Chalcolithic period (5060 – 4400 years before the present)
The fracture has been analyzed with both stereomicroscope and computerized microtomography (micro-CT)
the internal beveling and the acute fracture angles inform us that it is a perimortem trauma
around the time of the individual’s death”
this individual presents two antemortem injuries
in the occipital and in the right temporal bones
and a postmortem fracture in the lower area of the occipital
it is possible to observe the difference between antemortem
“Cranial injuries are particularly interesting
since the head is the main target when the intention is to kill the individual
so this type of injury is often associated with the cause of death”
“The resulting fracture pattern indicates that a blunt object with a straight
pointed edge was used (“sharp-blunt trauma”)
These objects have very similar morphology but differ in their position and form of use
The axes are hafted following the longitudinal axis of the handle
while the adzes are hafted in a transversal position
the dispersion of the force concerning the point of impact is different between the two cases”
The fact that it has been possible to identify the point of impact in the cranial fracture of Cova Foradada has allowed inferring which of these objects was most probably used: the adze
“The greatest destruction is located in an anterior position to the point of impact
so the blow was caused from the back of the individual
a portion of bone was slightly sunken inwards in response to external pressure
so a lever movement was probably made to extract the adze from the skull after the blow”
the study of the bones not only tells us about the people to whom they belonged
but also sometimes about how was their death
The case of Cova Foradada is an example of how
it is possible to reconstruct how a head injury occurred about 5000 years ago
Thanks to the analysis of the intrinsic factors of the fracture
such as the biomechanical properties of the bone and the fracture pattern itself
it has been possible to conclude about the weapon used
and the position of the attacker relative to the victim

The app has been produced by the company Digit
The citadel of Calafell is the only Spanish archaeological site which has been reconstructed in situ
so it is considered a reconstruction archaeology model
Calafellʼs open air museum has used the information obtained from excavation works —led by Joan Santacana between 1983 and 1993— to rebuild houses
The app shows the evolution of the Iberian settlement
The settlement of Iberian Cessetani tribe in Calafell began in the 6th century BC and ended in the 3rd century BC when Romans arrived
“A long-term site like this does not keep always the same characteristics”
when a reconstruction is made a moment has to be chosen
digital technologies enable to recreate several phases and show the evolution of the citadel”
Virtual images illustrate how the citadel was in the 6th century BC and in the 3rd
When the visitor is in siteʼs surroundings
the app geo-localize the user and alerts that he or she is in one of the six informative points that compose the virtual itinerary
When the camera focuses each signalled point
the app plays a video that shows how the citadel was at the beginning and the end of its history
The difference between hypotheses and historical truths
A characteristic of these videos is that they use colours to differentiate those parts which are known for sure from those which are hypotheses that remained unproved
the app indicates that an area might have hosted a square or a group of houses but there is not enough proof to indicate the correct one
it is a very honest app if we compare it with most digital apps that show true reconstruction but do not differentiate historical truths from hypotheses”
This type of app is intended to be used in open air archaeological sites
the research group has already received some requests to adapt the tool to other archaeological sites
The research group will be next working on a project to develop an app that transfers this pedagogical view to urban heritage
to be exact to the ancient city of Barcelona
