A video has emerged online showing a thin line of fire burning through a Spanish park covered in white "fluff," leaving the trees and grass unscathed
the video first appeared online on May 6 when it was posted to the Club De Montaña Calahorra Facebook page
where it has racked up millions of views—in one tweet alone
the video has been viewed more 5 million times
Local news reports confirmed the footage was taken in the Parque del Cidacos in Calahorra, a municipality in the La Rioja region of Spain located four-and-a-half hours northwest of Barcelona. According to news outlet La Rioja
the white substance covering the park that is seen burning in the video is the seeds produced by poplar trees
"The downy fluff comprises tiny fibres that surround seeds inside the catkins of poplars and willows," Dr
a tree expert at Australian National University
"The fibres that comprise the fluff helps seed dispersal
By catching even light breezes and adding to the seed's buoyancy
fluff allows seeds to be carried far from the mother parent."
It is not clear from the video if the fire was intentionally set to remove the fluff
Mayor of Calahorra Elisa Garrido settled the debate
confirming the fluff had not been deliberately set alight
"In the Cidacos de Calahorra park there is no 'controlled burning' of poplar fluff
Every spring it is common for people with little heads (carelessly or intentionally) to cause these fires
They are very dangerous and spread quickly," Garrido tweeted
the swift response of the local fire service ensured the flames were put out
with no damage to property or injuries to residents
who until the beginning of the month were largely confined to their homes as the country only now prepares to exit seven weeks of coronavirus lockdown
While the clip has caught the attention of people online
it is not the first time burning poplar fluff has been filmed leaving the ground beneath it apparently unmarked
A quick search on YouTube brings up several videos of people setting the fluff of poplar (or cottonwood) trees alight
Newsweek is committed to challenging conventional wisdom and finding connections in the search for common ground

It will be the first time the 33-year-old will be playing outside his native Spain. “I’m very excited for this new adventure and to become a part of the Atletico Ottawa family, and have the opportunity to live in such a beautiful country,” said Zabal in a club statement. “I hope my experience coming from Spain can help our club be successful and grow the game here in Ottawa.”

A tough match saw Rafa Márquez' team beat bottom side CD Calahorra 0-1 for their first away win for two months. Estanis Pedrola scored the only goal in 9th minute of the first half of a very even game. The unbeaten run now stretches to three wins and one draw.
Rafa Márquez' side came out clearly wanting to get a goal, and just after a good save from Arnau Tenas, Estanis Pedrola scored a wonderful goal. The winger beat two players from the home side before scoring to make it 0-1 in the 9th minute. The game settled down after the goal, with both sides seriously threatening from inside the area, but the score remained 0-1 at halftime.
Both teams were somewhat less accurate with their finishing after the restart. although Barça kept trying to extend their lead. A late push by Calahorra to try to level up the score saw them control the game for a period, but the Catalans' defence and keeper stood firm, confirming the tight away win.
The three points take Barça Atlètic temporarily into second in the table with the teams around them still to play in this round of matches. The next game will be on 28 January against the Real Sociedad B side at Estadi Johan Cruyff.

row upon row of gleaming mirrors form one of the world's biggest solar power plants and harness the sun's power even after dark
where summer temperatures often top 40 degrees Celsius
the main sound at the site is a whirring of motors to keep the mirrors - mounted on giant steel frames - tracking the sun as the Earth turns
whose name combines the local Andalucia region with the Spanish word for sun - "sol," provides electricity for up to about 500,000 people from about 620,000 curved mirrors
The glass alone would cover 1.5 square km - the size of about 210 soccer pitches
Installed electricity generating capacity at this semi-desert site is about 150 megawatts
at an altitude of 1,100 meters near the snow-capped Sierra Nevada range
Some hardy red and yellow flowers grow around the fringes
a few pigeons flap past and workers say that the odd fox lopes by at night
The environmental benefits of clean energy are judged to outweigh the scar to the landscape from the mirrors
there is little wildlife and few people live nearby
Andasol was Europe's first "parabolic trough solar power plant" when its first section opened in 2009 - California has the biggest
Sunlight bounces off the mirrors to heat synthetic oil in a tube to a blazing 400 degrees Celsius
That energy is in turn used to drive a turbine
some energy also goes into a "heat reservoir" - a tank containing thousands of tonnes of molten salt that can drive the turbines after sundown
That gets round the main drawback for solar power - the sun does not always shine
The system is very different from better-known rooftop solar panels that transform sunlight directly into electricity
Solar power has massive potential - one U.N
study estimated the world's electricity needs could be generated by harvesting solar power from an area of the Sahara 800 km by 800 km
a report by the International Energy Agency said the sun could - with a radical shift in investments - be the world's largest source of electricity by 2050
Capacity just from solar thermal plants like Andasol could expand to 1,000 gigawatts a year from 4 gigawatts at the end of 2013
But solar power has been risky for many companies and investors
Low-price Chinese exports have hit rivals in other parts of the world
especially those dependent on subsidies by governments
a sharp fall in prices of photovoltaic panels and improved technology that captures more power from the sun has placed solar energy on the cusp of a global boom

Barça Atlètic made it two wins out of two at the Estadi Johan Cruyff after overcoming a tightly balanced start by finally imposing their superiority to clain a two-goal victory.
With seven points from a possible nine, they are among the frontrunners in Primera Divisió RFEF, level on points with Reial Murcia, Alcoyano and Osasuna B.
Both sides were keen to give this game a go, and some top work from Barça goalie Arnau Tenas ensured the visitors took nothing early on. Barça grew and grew as the game progressed, and the best chances of the first half fell to Juanda, Ilias Akhomach and Roberto but as far as goals were concerned, neither side was any the better when the half time whistle blew.
Following the restart, there was new verve in the blaugrana football, and eventually Juanda found the net after a tremendous run and even better finish after 62 minutes.
It was only after scoring that we really felt we were seeing the Barça reserves at their best. and a second goal always looked on the cards and eventually came from the boot oF Roberto Fernández, his first ever competitive goal for the side.
Barça Atlètic: Arnau Tenas, Riad, Núñez, Juanda (Fabio Blanco, min. 69), Txus Alba (Marc Casadó, min. 79), Luismi Cruz (Aleix Garrido, min. 63), Carbonell, Pelayo (Diounkou, min. 79), Àlex Valle, Ilias Akhomach, Roberto.
CD Calahorra: Miguel Martínez, Ángel López, Mario Robles (Carrasco, min. 73), Ander Vidorreta, Basseiga, Álex Arias (Gabarre, min. 63), Joan Rojas, Santana (Sergio Gil, min. 63), Iñigo Zubiri (Luna, min. 46), Recio, Chinchilla (Ibarrondo, min. 78).
Goals: 1 – 0, Juanda (min. 62); 2 – 0, Roberto (min. 77).

Two workers died in an explosion at a biodiesel plant in Calahorra in Spain’s La Rioja region on Thursday afternoon
The blast affected several tanks at the premises of Iniciativas Bioenegéticas SL located on the El Recuenco industrial estate
Two people died at the site but the company’s 22-strong workforce were safely evacuated from the scene
Some 250 children who were in the vicinity on an excursion were also safely evacuated from the area
The incident was reported just before one in the afternoon and firefighters battled to prevent the flames from spreading due to the volatile nature of materials stored at the site
The fear was that the flames would reach stores of methanol and other highly flammable products
There was no evidence that there was any toxic gas in the column of smoke created after the explosion
and in anticipation of possible new explosions
the emergency services established a one-kilometre security zone around the plant
As one of the workers graphically explained
if the methanol deposits were ignited "the blast wave could reach the cathedral"
It is believed the two victims of the explosion were external workers
welders who were working for a subcontracted company at the site

Born on 12 June 2004 in Caudete (Albacete)
Born on 08 April 1994 in Urnieta (Gipuzkoa)
Manama : Bahrain representative Mikel Calahorra finished an impressive 31st place in the Extreme Fat Bike competition which was held in Quebec
featuring 120 participants from all over the world who competed in a 37km race under temperature of -16C at the start of the race
Calahorra was sitting cushioning a place between 10th to 15th place and was putting maximum efforts to improve his position before cold rains showered the course and made it very complicated
especially to international cyclists who didn’t have an equal level of experience to the locals. At this point
locals were able to open a gap with the internationals
They went through the conditions as nothing was happening
Mikel’s glasses got covered with a thick layer of ice that didn’t allow him to see; the track was slippery and with hard icy footprints of snow motorbikes and bikes that made him crash several times and lose positions and plenty of time
The podium was dominated by local cyclists
while none of the internationals were able to get even close to them
showing how this challenge isn’t only about fitness
but about management of the conditions and very particular driving skills
I must say that the best part of all this experience were the local people from Lac Saint Jean
Amazing group of volunteers that make the race possible and looked after our safety under those extreme conditions.”
He further added: “The experience was incredible and unique
A very nice challenge that each year is entirely different to the previous ones due to the weather conditions
The people of Lac Saint Jean also made me feel like home
and I’m very thankful to them”
Manama : Bahrain Endurance 13 team members are set to race over half distances this weekend
with Holly Lawrence set to defend her Ironman 70.3 Mont Tremblantin Quebec
Fredrik Croneborg takes on the inaugural Challenge Nakhon Nayok in Thailand and Mikel Calahorra races at Ironman 70.3 Coeur d’Alene in Idaho
Holly Lawrence has gone undefeated at this distance since her win here in Mont Tremblant last year
The reigning Ironman 70.3 world champion is looking to keep the streak alive
“Getting ready to race one of my favourite races and where I got my very first Ironman win last year,” Lawrence said
Fredrik Croneborg has kept a low profile since he won the full distance at Challenge Taiwan back in April
The Phuket-resident Swede will stay close to home on return to long-distance racing
with Nakhon Nayok only a 90-minute drive from Bangkok
“I have been a bit tired since the race in Taiwan
but the last couple of weeks I started to feel good and now riding with power I have better numbers than before and have changed to a more aggressive bike position
I hope I can show a good result on the flat course,” Croneborg said
In racing Ironman 70.3 Coeur d’Alene
Mikel Calahorra will attempt to secure an age-group qualifier spot for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship
Training through the fasting season of Ramadan in Bahrain has been challenging since one can only take food and water in after sunset
but the Spaniard has found the silver lining.
“Ramadan timing starts the first workout at sunset and finishing the second session at 2am every day,” Calahorra said.
“Even though they are not the ideal times for training and resting properly
it allowed me to skip the heat and to train on US time so jet lag won’t affect me
and let the work come out,” he added
Manama : Bahrain is set to participate in the Extreme Fat Bike competition taking place on 25 February in Canada
under the directives of HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa
Representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs
Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports
Moussa Karich and Mikel Calahorra will cycle 37km over the ice
facing snow storms and fighting high winds under freezing temperatures below -30C to cross Lake Saint-Jean
Quebec an event only for the toughest athletes in the world
president of the Bahrain Cycling Association
regarding the participation of the two Bahrain representatives said: “We are delighted to have riders represent Bahrain in such a unique event
we don’t have similar conditions in Bahrain
the fact that our riders can bring the experience of such events to us
They have been training in the sand and warm conditions
yet we are confident that they can take on such an extreme race
We look forward to hosting fat bike sand races in the future as it gains more popularity
Cycling in Bahrain continues to grow whether it’s through the new pro team Bahrain-Merida
hosting of major event such as the Asian cycling championship
or participating in world championships and top events such as this participation by Mikel and Moussa.”
Extreme cold temperatures are fought with special equipment and clothing
furs and natural animal skin from Canada spices
will provide the Bahraini athletes with the proper clothing to support temperatures lower than -30C
Fat bikes are a particular type of mountain bikes designed to ride in harsh terrains such as sand and snow
The size and thickness of the wheels are bigger and wider than usual bikes to assure the grip and control needed for that kind of surfaces
Karich and Calahorra will be riding FELT bikes
and have been training in the Bahraini desert
“The feeling of riding on snow comparing to sand are very similar which will give us an excellent preparation for the event,”Calahorra said.
