But there were two other former UL players without that level of postseason hardware who also got opportunities to make NFL clubs in special teams phenom Dalen Cambre and defensive lineman Mason Narcisse Cambre signed with the New York Giants and Narcisse with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Wooldridge will be heading to the New England Patriots while Ossai will be going back to his home state by signing with the Houston Texans “A few teams called me before the draft actually ended so I didn’t even watch the last few picks,” said Cambre who was surprised how quickly the transaction with the Giants took place “I didn’t realize how quick I had to give an answer yes or no or how fast they were going to call you,” he said “It’s like it’s a game — split-second decision.” Initially it appeared Cambre was headed to the Carolina Panthers before the Giants came through with a better offer Cambre said he had a Zoom call with New York’s special teams assistant and former UL cornerbacks coach Jeff Burris last week “They gave a good impression and I guess I gave a good impression as well,” Cambre said Really the special teams aspect of my game is how I got today.” that an NFL opportunity became real to Cambre “I never really wrapped my mind about it,” he said and just continue to work each and every day to get there I had people telling me — I don’t think it actually hit me until after the bowl game when I was moving out of Lafayette to train and get ready for pro day Thomas More standout played some wide receiver during his time with the Cajuns but his biggest impact was always on special teams with three blocked kicks His pro day was huge because he was able to display his skills “The scouts said they have a good confidence in me running routes and catching the ball because they saw it at pro day,” Cambre said “They were able to see me do stuff that I didn’t have a lot of and able to see me work Really pro day is an opportunity to show how hard you’re willing to work.” It was his hard work this past season and during the offseason that helped make the call from the Buccaneers so special for Narcisse 301-pound defensive tackle got calls from Seahawks “They told me I was going to get an opportunity to showcase my talents,” Narcisse said you’re a Buc now.’ They just want me to go there and do everything I possibly can to impress them Narcisse had 37 tackles and 3.5 sacks this past season and had six total sacks in his career “I felt like I had a pretty good season and I worked my butt off It was extra special for Narcisse’s mother He’s an only child and his father passed away before the 2023 season opener All I needed was a foot in the door and I finally got that I was happy to see her see a smile on her face Narcisse and Cambre will both cornerstone event for pork producers and this year’s gathering truly lived up to its reputation Steve Patterson has created a one-of-a-kind experience that not only educates but inspires everyone involved in the pork industry Having attended as an independent pork producer from Missouri found this year’s event to be one of the best yet the conference delivered on its promise of value fostering an environment where producers could connect and share ideas the real highlight was the keynote speaker famously known as the “Iron Cowboy.” His motivational message was nothing short of extraordinary As someone who faces the ups and downs of running a family farm I left his talk with a renewed sense of purpose and drive to tackle challenges head-on Equally impactful was Greg Lewis’s session on leadership skills Leadership is an essential component of managing a successful farm operation and his talk provided practical tools I can bring back to my team at Thrasher Family Farm It’s inspiring to see these events focus on skills that go beyond production and into personal growth events like Passion for Pigs are invaluable They offer a chance to hear directly from peers and gain perspectives from industry experts staying competitive means continually adapting to market pressures while maintaining the core values of sustainability and community that define family farming One thing I particularly appreciate about this event is the balance between technical discussions and broader Patterson’s vision for this conference brings together the science of farming and the heart of the people behind it having the chance to pause and reflect on why we do what we do is priceless This year’s conference left me energized and optimistic the Passion for Pigs Conference continues to foster an environment where growth and collaboration thrive I highly encourage you to make it a priority next year Patterson and his team have built something truly special—an event that leaves every producer better equipped and more connected to the industry we love EAST RUTHERFORD - Former Green Bay Packers executive Andrew Brandt likes retelling the story of his favorite undrafted free agent Sunday on Twitter "'but I promise I will bring the rest when I get there.' He's the son of former NFL defensive back Dre Bly, who is currently on the Jets coaching staff 320-pound tackle models his game after Trent Williams Paige led all Michigan DBs last season with 45 tackles which included one for loss as well as six pass breakups two interceptions and a blocked kick on special teams Was teammates with Giants third-round pick Darius Alexander at Toledo before transferring for his final season at Wisconsin Provided depth for the Badgers and was more productive in three previous years with the Rockets Virginia TechProduction took a dip this past season but he's a height-weight-speed prospect [6-5 213] with traits that the Giants will try to get the most out of Transferred from Cal and played one season with the Beavers 255 and a dual threat as a receiver and blocker Nicknamed "Turnover Tommy" by his coaches for having a nose for the football this 6-foot-1 safety finished his career with 273 total tackles – including nine tackles for loss – seven interceptions battling injuries for most of his time there Transferred to Oklahoma for his final two seasons and was productive in 58 career games with 99 tackles North CarolinaThe Georgia Tech transfer is 5-foot- and 185 pounds and he became a versatile gadget option both as a receiver and runner this past season impressing with a 38.5-inch vertical and really good 20-yard and 10-yard splits on his 40-yard dash (2.56 Baker ran for more than 150 yards in each of his last three Elon games and began his college career at Bucknell The East/West Shrine Bowl Defensive MVP fielded several offers before joining the Giants 185) and is more comfortable in zone schemes Former Don Bosco star began career with Scarlet Knights as a walk-on and now he's got a chance to impress Giants in NFL quest He participated in the team's local Pro Day and his toughness and grit has been praised throughout his football journey Our Lady of Prompt Succor Cemetery-Westwego When Kenneth Almendares and Dalen Cambre first stepped into the UL facility no one could have predicted the chemistry that would blossom between the two What started as an unlikely connection on the football field quickly evolved into a friendship that transcended the game ‘You couldn’t throw me a better pass!’ And I was like The lighthearted banter marked the beginning of a bond that would strengthen both on and off the field But as they worked on building a seamless connection during games there were challenges off the field that required teamwork too paying for school presented a significant hurdle because he wasn’t on a full scholarship “I got him to come to work with me as a server for a couple of nights,” Cambre shared That camaraderie proved invaluable as the season progressed his contributions as a kicker made history setting records as the all-time leader in field goals and extra points for the Sun Belt Conference While he quietly worked toward those milestones there was one person he couldn’t wait to share them with when the moment finally came—Almendares "I shared a special moment with Dalen," said Almendares and I know it was my accomplishment is his so we enjoyed it together." Their partnership was about more than stats or accolades whose standout season earned him the prestigious Lou Groza Award “I hope that we win so we can cherish it,” Almendares said shown here catching a pass during a UL practice is expected to play a big role on special teams and at wide receiver this season Few UL players have a better feel for the team’s progress this season than redshirt senior Dalen Cambre he’s been around the program for a long time now everything from special teams captain to wide receiver to functioning as a virtual graduate assistant coach “I’m just excited for the energy,” Cambre said of special teams New special teams coordinator Mike Giuliani has leaned on Cambre because of his experience “He kind of asked me personally,” Cambre said Kind of like I’m a GA or a quality-control guy “We talk like we’re best friends and we’re coaching together He really respects my opinions and some of the older guys’ opinions because we have game reps and he kind of runs with it.” While special teams play is his first love Thomas More standout also helps out at wide receiver when needed I took the playbook home every night and studied it really hard,” he said Cambre is proficient at all three wideout spots I think coach (Tim) Leger would trust me to play all three When the quarterback room got extra thin last season it was Cambre who moved in to serve as the emergency quarterback option who said the brief QB experiment has helped him at receiver “I was really hoping to get a chance to go show what I can do Whether they needed me at wide receiver or at quarterback Cambre has designs on becoming a coach once his playing career is over “I think we’re going to be really good on special teams this year,” he said we’ve kind of taken them in and showed them how it should be done.” Senior Tavion Smith caught two passes for 24 yards and a touchdown during his first season at UL last year so it would be easy to overlook the former junior-college transfer “Tavion is having a really good camp,” Desormeaux said much of his progress is about seeing the finish line I didn’t perform the way I wanted to perform so I knew that this offseason I knew I wanted to get better and I knew I wanted to see the field a lot more than I did last year,” the 6-foot-3 Smith also wants to make his family’s trips to Cajun Country more memorable “I really want to represent my family the right way,” he said “I want them to be able to come to the game and cheer me on and just make plays for them.” Another big part of Smith’s improvement is a better knowledge of the playbook but now that I’ve had a full year of learning the playbook now I fully understand where I’m supposed to be lined up and how I’m supposed to beat this coverage.” Cambre has been around long enough and been in the quarterback room long enough to notice things such as how well true freshman Daniel Beale has adjusted “He’s kind of done what I’ve done,” Cambre said of the freshman from Baton Rouge “He’s taken the quarterback role and he’s taking the playbook home and asking the older guys He’s both studying the playbook and the older guys at the same time.” Beale isn’t going to let a lack of preparation hold him back “He’s treating it like he’s an NFL quarterback He’s prepared to do his job whenever it comes.” Or was wide receiver Dalen Cambre able to keep it off That was just the first question that officials had to decide on this potential touchdown catch Friday night at the St Thomas More Catholic High School (Lafayette La.) vs Teurlings Catholic High School (Lafayette
