a Lafayette native and former Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns standout
carved out an impressive path through the game of football
From excelling on those very fields that were ultimately built in Youngsville
to earning a name for himself at Cajun Field
Cambre’s story is one that proves how far a dream
and a community’s support can take you
Youngsville Mayor Ken Ritter marked the occasion with a powerful full-circle moment
sharing the flyer that once featured Cambre as a child
Dalen – then #23 – stood for a photo supporting the vision of the Youngsville Sports Complex,” Ritter wrote
“And now he’s living the dream!”
Cambre replied: “I remember that day like it was yesterday
Thank you—and thank you to the City of Youngsville.”
Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns head coach Michael Desormeaux called Cambre “Mr
Consistent,” and longtime “Voice of the Cajuns” Jay Walker echoed that sentiment
offering perhaps the most detailed scouting report Cambre could ask for:
“He’s been a Swiss Army knife
He found a way to get on the field early in his career
He’s as good a holder as I’ve ever seen
As a receiver he had great hands and was a good blocker
He’s going to have a chance to stick in the NFL.”
Supporters online have suggested Cambre return to Youngsville to host a youth camp—an idea he quickly agreed to
It’s clear he hasn’t forgotten where it all began
MetLife Stadium is a long way from the Youngsville Sports Complex
both are home fields—proving that dreams
can grow as big as the person behind them when the work is done
Years ago, a little boy from Youngsville stood on a flyer promoting a dream—a vision to build the Youngsville Sports Complex. Now, he's in the NFL.\nRead More

LAFAYETTE — The 2025 NFL Draft is just around the corner
With 257 prospects set to receive the call of a lifetime
several former Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns are hoping to be among those selected
Sixteen UL standouts participated in last month’s Pro Day
showcasing their skills in front of NFL scouts and executives
Among the most decorated of the group is senior kicker Kenny Almendares
who became the first Cajun to win the prestigious Lou Groza Award
Almendares led the nation in field goals made in 2024
became Louisiana’s all-time leading scorer
Cornerback Keyon Martin also turned heads at Pro Day
clocking a blazing 4.38-second 40-yard dash
The Fort Lauderdale native has reportedly drawn interest from the Miami Dolphins
who led the team in tackles last season and earned First Team All-Sun Belt honors
is hoping to follow in the footsteps of his older brother Joseph
Thomas More products Dalen Cambre and Landon Burton are among those eligible
Cambre finished second in the nation in special teams tackles
while Burton — an offensive lineman — didn’t allow a sack in 2024
a First Team All-Sun Belt honoree who started 51 games in his career
they helped protect quarterback Ben Wooldridge
the 2024 Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year
Wooldridge threw for 2,300 yards and 17 touchdowns before an injury sidelined him against South Alabama
Receiver Lance LeGendre led the team in receiving with 49 catches for 826 yards and six touchdowns
Other Cajuns hoping to hear their names called include:

signed an undrafted free agent contract with the New York Giants
reigning Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year Ben Wooldridge and All-Sun Belt linebacker K.C
Ossai were two of the former Ragin’ Cajuns offered undrafted free agent contracts after the conclusion of the NFL draft on Saturday
Lou Groza Award winner Kenny Almendares signed an undrafted free agent deal with the San Francisco 49ers
But there were two other former UL players without that level of postseason hardware who also got opportunities to make NFL clubs in special teams phenom Dalen Cambre and defensive lineman Mason Narcisse
Cambre signed with the New York Giants and Narcisse with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Wooldridge will be heading to the New England Patriots
while Ossai will be going back to his home state by signing with the Houston Texans
“A few teams called me before the draft actually ended
so I didn’t even watch the last few picks,” said Cambre
who was surprised how quickly the transaction with the Giants took place
“I didn’t realize how quick I had to give an answer yes or no
or how fast they were going to call you,” he said
“It’s like it’s a game — split-second decision.”
Initially it appeared Cambre was headed to the Carolina Panthers
before the Giants came through with a better offer
Cambre said he had a Zoom call with New York’s special teams assistant and former UL cornerbacks coach Jeff Burris last week
“They gave a good impression and I guess I gave a good impression as well,” Cambre said
Really the special teams aspect of my game is how I got today.”
that an NFL opportunity became real to Cambre
“I never really wrapped my mind about it,” he said
and just continue to work each and every day to get there
I had people telling me — I don’t think it actually hit me until after the bowl game when I was moving out of Lafayette to train and get ready for pro day
Thomas More standout played some wide receiver during his time with the Cajuns
but his biggest impact was always on special teams with three blocked kicks
His pro day was huge because he was able to display his skills
“The scouts said they have a good confidence in me running routes and catching the ball because they saw it at pro day,” Cambre said
“They were able to see me do stuff that I didn’t have a lot of and able to see me work
Really pro day is an opportunity to show how hard you’re willing to work.”
It was his hard work this past season and during the offseason that helped make the call from the Buccaneers so special for Narcisse
301-pound defensive tackle got calls from Seahawks
“They told me I was going to get an opportunity to showcase my talents,” Narcisse said
you’re a Buc now.’ They just want me to go there and do everything I possibly can to impress them
Narcisse had 37 tackles and 3.5 sacks this past season and had six total sacks in his career
“I felt like I had a pretty good season and I worked my butt off
It was extra special for Narcisse’s mother
He’s an only child and his father passed away before the 2023 season opener
All I needed was a foot in the door and I finally got that
I was happy to see her see a smile on her face
Narcisse and Cambre will both report for rookie minicamp on May 8
other former UL teammates could still get rookie minicamp invitations
including AJ Gillie to Seattle and Tyrone Lewis joining Cambre with the Giants

The Passion for Pigs Conference has become a cornerstone event for pork producers
and this year’s gathering truly lived up to its reputation
Steve Patterson has created a one-of-a-kind experience that not only educates but inspires everyone involved in the pork industry
Having attended as an independent pork producer from Missouri
found this year’s event to be one of the best yet
the conference delivered on its promise of value
fostering an environment where producers could connect and share ideas
the real highlight was the keynote speaker
famously known as the “Iron Cowboy.” His motivational message was nothing short of extraordinary
As someone who faces the ups and downs of running a family farm
I left his talk with a renewed sense of purpose and drive to tackle challenges head-on
Equally impactful was Greg Lewis’s session on leadership skills
Leadership is an essential component of managing a successful farm operation
and his talk provided practical tools I can bring back to my team at Thrasher Family Farm
It’s inspiring to see these events focus on skills that go beyond production and into personal growth
events like Passion for Pigs are invaluable
They offer a chance to hear directly from peers
and gain perspectives from industry experts
staying competitive means continually adapting to market pressures while maintaining the core values of sustainability and community that define family farming
One thing I particularly appreciate about this event is the balance between technical discussions and broader
Patterson’s vision for this conference brings together the science of farming and the heart of the people behind it
having the chance to pause and reflect on why we do what we do is priceless
This year’s conference left me energized and optimistic
the Passion for Pigs Conference continues to foster an environment where growth and collaboration thrive
I highly encourage you to make it a priority next year
Patterson and his team have built something truly special—an event that leaves every producer better equipped
and more connected to the industry we love

When Kenneth Almendares and Dalen Cambre first stepped into the UL facility
no one could have predicted the chemistry that would blossom between the two
What started as an unlikely connection on the football field quickly evolved into a friendship that transcended the game
‘You couldn’t throw me a better pass!’ And I was like
The lighthearted banter marked the beginning of a bond that would strengthen both on and off the field
But as they worked on building a seamless connection during games
there were challenges off the field that required teamwork too
paying for school presented a significant hurdle because he wasn’t on a full scholarship
“I got him to come to work with me as a server for a couple of nights,” Cambre shared
That camaraderie proved invaluable as the season progressed
his contributions as a kicker made history
setting records as the all-time leader in field goals and extra points for the Sun Belt Conference
While he quietly worked toward those milestones
there was one person he couldn’t wait to share them with when the moment finally came—Almendares
"I shared a special moment with Dalen," said Almendares
and I know it was my accomplishment is his so we enjoyed it together."
Their partnership was about more than stats or accolades
whose standout season earned him the prestigious Lou Groza Award
“I hope that we win so we can cherish it,” Almendares said
shown here catching a pass during a UL practice
is expected to play a big role on special teams and at wide receiver this season
Few UL players have a better feel for the team’s progress this season than redshirt senior Dalen Cambre
he’s been around the program for a long time now
everything from special teams captain to wide receiver to functioning as a virtual graduate assistant coach
“I’m just excited for the energy,” Cambre said of special teams
New special teams coordinator Mike Giuliani has leaned on Cambre because of his experience
“He kind of asked me personally,” Cambre said
Kind of like I’m a GA or a quality-control guy
“We talk like we’re best friends and we’re coaching together
He really respects my opinions and some of the older guys’ opinions because we have game reps and he kind of runs with it.”
While special teams play is his first love
Thomas More standout also helps out at wide receiver when needed
I took the playbook home every night and studied it really hard,” he said
Cambre is proficient at all three wideout spots
I think coach (Tim) Leger would trust me to play all three
When the quarterback room got extra thin last season
it was Cambre who moved in to serve as the emergency quarterback option
who said the brief QB experiment has helped him at receiver
“I was really hoping to get a chance to go show what I can do
Whether they needed me at wide receiver or at quarterback
Cambre has designs on becoming a coach once his playing career is over
“I think we’re going to be really good on special teams this year,” he said
we’ve kind of taken them in and showed them how it should be done.”
Senior Tavion Smith caught two passes for 24 yards and a touchdown during his first season at UL last year
so it would be easy to overlook the former junior-college transfer
“Tavion is having a really good camp,” Desormeaux said
much of his progress is about seeing the finish line
I didn’t perform the way I wanted to perform
so I knew that this offseason I knew I wanted to get better and I knew I wanted to see the field a lot more than I did last year,” the 6-foot-3
Smith also wants to make his family’s trips to Cajun Country more memorable
“I really want to represent my family the right way,” he said
“I want them to be able to come to the game and cheer me on and just make plays for them.”
Another big part of Smith’s improvement is a better knowledge of the playbook
but now that I’ve had a full year of learning the playbook
now I fully understand where I’m supposed to be lined up and how I’m supposed to beat this coverage.”
Cambre has been around long enough and been in the quarterback room long enough to notice things
such as how well true freshman Daniel Beale has adjusted
“He’s kind of done what I’ve done,” Cambre said of the freshman from Baton Rouge
“He’s taken the quarterback role and he’s taking the playbook home and asking the older guys
He’s both studying the playbook and the older guys at the same time.”
Beale isn’t going to let a lack of preparation hold him back
“He’s treating it like he’s an NFL quarterback
He’s prepared to do his job whenever it comes.”
Or was wide receiver Dalen Cambre able to keep it off
That was just the first question that officials had to decide on this potential touchdown catch Friday night at the St
Thomas More Catholic High School (Lafayette
La.) vs Teurlings Catholic High School (Lafayette
The play presents another challenge that officiating crews at all levels have been trying to determine: What is a catch
The had to decide whether Cambre kept it off the ground
whether or not he had control if it did touch the ground
if he had possession when he was in bounds
Suspect arrested in shooting of Norland High School football quarterback coach
Bear makes broken-field run during California high school football practice
The officials ruled that he did catch the ball and spotted him at the one-yard line
He said the referees weren't sure where to spot the ball
It appears the officials believed Cambre had possession when his shoulder or upper arm hit the ground prior to the ball passing the line and entering the end zone

The Ground Pat’i Bar & Grill that closed in late 2023 will make a return to Lafayette
The restaurant will reopen in the space that housed the original Ground Pat’i at 2303 Johnston St.
It was issued a certificate of occupancy back in December by Lafayette Consolidated Government
For years the eatery was located at 2512 Kaliste Saloom Road
but the lease ended at the end of last year and Cambre elected to close
The Toasted Yolk Café has since opened in that space
The building is now owned by Old Tyme Grocery owner Glenn and Cheri Murphree after they bought it in August from the LeBlanc family
The restaurant dates back to its opening in 2003 as part of what was then referred to as Lafayette’s restaurant row on Kaliste Saloom Road
It’s part of the chain that began in 1971 and was at the time the second Lafayette location

UL placekicker Kenneth Almendares (45) is all smiles after breaking the all time scoring record against Arkansas State earlier this season
No UL football player has ever won such a prestigious national honor
If any UL football player won a major national award like senior placekicker Kenny Almendares did Thursday evening when he was given the Lou Groza Award as the top kicker in the nation
it would be a huge moment for the Ragin’ Cajuns program
no UL football player has ever won such a prestigious national honor
But for those of us who have gotten to know Almendares over his time in Lafayette
Texas native has made it easier to truly be more happy for him than just about any player possible
earning the honor over the other two finalists
Kentucky’s Alex Raynor and Florida State’s Ryan Fitzgerald
He made more field goals than any kicker in the nation with 27 and he was ninth in field goal percentage at .931 by making all but two of his 29 attempts
his two misses were wide right from 53 and wide left from 60 yards
Almendares finished the season 11th nationally in points scored with 128 and holds both the school and Sun Belt career marks with 68 total field goals
He also holds the UL record for career scoring with 362 and extra points with 158
players and fans were so happy to hear the news Thursday evening
Almendares being Kenny the nice guy much more than Kenny the Kicker than warmed the hearts of so many in South Louisiana
“Kenny never seems to have a bad day,” UL coach Michael Desormeaux said
there were times since coming to the Cajuns in 2019 when Almendares was nowhere near the level of being considered to win the Lou Groza Award and yet
he was still smiling and still primed and ready to brighten the day of everyone who crossed his path
he only attempted 11 field goals and made nine
he had a rough patch – missing five – and finished 18-of-23
Desormeaux remembers sending Almendares out to kick a 52-yarder and he made it
he’s been a different kicker every since that kick,” Desormeaux said
Almendares only missed two of his 16 attempts last season
before being incredibly consistent this season
“It’s just incredible how consistent he’s been this season,” Desormeaux said
those statistics aren’t the reason why so many people are thrilled for winning the award
Almendares brought his holder Dalen Cambre with him to the ceremony in Palm Beach
because he knows the enormous role Cambre played in making all the field goals he made
“I do want him to experience that with me because I couldn’t do it without him,” Almendares said of Cambre
there’s another really cool aspect of Almendares’ big moment
the Cajuns have turned out a lot of offensive linemen in the NFL ranks
there was a good amount of defensive backs reaching the higher level
From Rafael Septien to John Roveto to Patrick Broussard to Richie Cunningham to Mike Lemoine to John Shafer – the only other UL kicker to be a Lou Groza finalist – the program has a rich history of successful kickers
Now the Cajuns sport the best one in the nation
not all of those guys were as genuinely nice and pleasant as Almendares is
