Jessica Buckley (CAS’25) cleaning off an uncovered floor at the platform site at the El Campanario Archaeological Project in Peru
Summer is a chance for archaeology students to get their hands dirty and volunteer for a dig
Buckley attended a field school on the coast of Peru this past summer, working on the El Campanario Archaeological Project, run by Jose Peña, a staff archaeologist at global archaeology consultancy firm Chronicle Heritage, who recently completed his dissertation on the site.
studies the sociopolitical organization of the El Campanario settlement during the Late Intermediate Period (1000 to 1400 A.D.)
the site contains human remains and artifacts
and archaeologists knew from previous research that the site’s inhabitants made pottery
Buckley found the field school through the Archaeological Institute of America website
She was excited about the chance to explore Andean archaeology—the area of Peru and Ecuador along the Andes mountains—after taking a class on the subject during sophomore year.
“I thought that I would take the opportunity to go abroad for half the summer and see what Peru would be like,” says Buckley
who is double majoring in archaeology and sociocultural anthropology
because the group would leave for the site at 7 am
and then work in the lab for another hour.
They excavated carefully and bagged and tagged everything they found
The artifacts they unearthed included remains of walls
weighing all of the samples and recording everything,” she says
“We then boxed it all up and organized it for storage in a museum under the Ministry of Culture of Peru.”
This trip was the first time Buckley had lived on her own in a foreign country for an extended period
since she isn’t a fluent Spanish speaker.
“But I never felt like I was overwhelmed by the challenges presented,” she says.
Buckley’s favorite part of the experience was exploring places with her new friends in what she describes as “a unique situation.”
Oliver Goss, who is majoring in archaeology with a minor in visual studies, was one of about 20 students working for the Szazhalombatta Field Project
The site is a 5,000-year-old Bronze Age settlement along the Danube River in a small town in Hungary
Finds from the site include pottery
The excavation at the site is led by Magdolna Vicze
a researcher at the Hungarian National Museum
Goss says the most exciting part of the summer was the team’s discovery of a fully intact human skeleton
something that’s “completely unheard of for this site.” The find inspired Goss to take human osteology
the science of studying the human skeleton
This site was first occupied at the end of the Early Bronze Age and then through the Middle Bronze Age Period
It was again occupied in the Late Bronze Age.
so this was also a way of kind of coming to this country and making my own kind of connection with it,” Goss says
adding that they had traveled to the country a few times
but usually just the capital city of Budapest
This was the first time Goss had stayed in the countryside
and they describe it as an immersive experience in Hungarian culture and a day-to-day life that they were unfamiliar with
the biggest challenge was dealing with the day-to-day nitty-gritty activities of the dig site
“I did not imagine that archaeology would just be so much manual labor,” they say
One stressful component involved always ensuring that the cataloging documents were kept away from the tent’s windows in case of unexpected rain
and also making sure that a tarp would be ready at a moment’s notice
“It was really interesting to experience [these activities] firsthand,” Goss says
“after having done so much archaeology that was just like reading papers and looking at microscopes.”

Editor’s note: This story contains descriptions of sexual violence
When new owners purchased the pale blue colonial in rural Arlington
a century-old house behind a white picket fence
they would rent the three upstairs bedrooms to up to nine men for a discipleship program associated with a Kingdom Life Assembly congregation
said his mission was to provide housing and spiritual support to people who had a history of sex crimes by “fostering a home environment that promotes a family atmosphere,” according to state and county public records
and Washington’s Department of Social and Health Services needed to house people who were increasingly granted conditional release from its Special Commitment Center
The remote facility on McNeil Island in south Puget Sound detains people who have been civilly committed into state custody because their history of violent sex crimes and psychiatric disorders may make them more likely to reoffend
A court had ruled that indefinite detention was illegal without treatment and a pathway to release
Eagles Nest became one of more than two dozen homes statewide that the agency has paid to house hundreds of people moving off the island
Yet amid a growing reliance on supervised housing
the Special Commitment Center uses mostly unregulated providers and operates its community program under a fragmented system of oversight that has compromised resident and public safety
Residents were placed at homes where they have been able to consistently violate court orders
including absconding from supervision and obtaining drugs and child sexual abuse images or videos
And DSHS continued to employ someone who was accused of raping a teenager
He later committed a sexual offense against a colleague at work
The gaps in oversight and state accountability allowed individual home operators to collect payments despite ongoing problems
This is a critical moment for one of Washington’s most isolated programs
Far more people are now released into the community each year than are committed to the island
changing how and where sexual rehabilitation occurs
Yet the program continues to operate largely unchecked
have only chipped away at the sweeping reforms lawmakers say are necessary to fix a broken system
While each person on conditional release has a “transition team,” including a corrections officer
sex offender therapist and often a community chaperone
the homes themselves have little such scrutiny
they essentially operate under court-ordered landlord agreements
the state doesn’t have the power to set enforceable standards or terminate a placement without going through the courts
In the few cases when the agency has entered into contracts
it has chosen providers with known problems
“Any system is probably far from perfect,” said Kevin Bovenkamp
assistant secretary for behavioral health for DSHS
“but I think the system is working the way it is designed.”
Bob Ferguson acknowledged the program needs improvement
“(I) know how serious these cases are,” Ferguson
who prosecuted sexual civil commitment cases as Washington’s attorney general
“It’s a high bar to designate someone a sexually violent predator
It’s reserved for people who are likely to continue to commit sexually violent crimes unless the state intervenes.”
“In my inaugural address I said I’m not here to defend government
One area that needs improvement is the LRA (less restrictive alternative community housing) system
I’m looking forward to taking my experience at the AG’s Office to improve public safety across our state.”
the Department of Corrections — which inspects homes before a resident is placed there — told a court it would be an advantageous setting because Parker could be “an active agent in monitoring and potentially responding to concerning behaviors” of residents
reveal problems mounted as residents moved in
Parker took a $25,000 loan from a new resident
Another resident evaded court-ordered supervision to solicit sex from bikini baristas and massage parlors
And there’s no record of Parker’s nonprofit ever filing required tax documents
DSHS paid him at least $68,000 from 2019 through 2023 to house residents from McNeil Island
Only after Parker was arrested in 2023 in a criminal drug trafficking and money laundering scheme
for which he was sentenced to 4 ½ years in prison
When Damion Blevins cut off his ankle monitor last September
less than three months after moving from McNeil Island into a supervised apartment in Tukwila
the state had already overlooked warning signs
Blevins had a history of drug abuse and assaulting women
and his new housing was located in an area known for crime
DSHS and Washington courts have also been warned about the fallibility of the GPS monitors Blevins and others are court-ordered to wear: The devices are not completely accurate and can misfire
was paid $2,100 monthly by DSHS to house each person from McNeil Island
The operators also had a history of sex crimes — one had been committed to McNeil Island — and had trouble keeping track of residents
At least four civilly committed people have been flagged by corrections officers multiple times for evading court-ordered supervision while living at the apartments
None of these problems prevented Blevins’ placement there. And when he disappeared, 24 hours passed before anyone noticed. He was found in Portland after a three-day multistate search
A spokesperson for the Department of Corrections said the September incident is under investigation for possible misconduct
When the state passed the Community Protection Act in 1990 and enshrined the concept of civilly detaining “sexually violent predators” after a conviction or charge
lawmakers thought few people would ever be allowed to return to the community or that the state might one day be responsible for housing them outside an institution
meaningful oversight of community housing went largely unaddressed
Over the next decade, lawsuits and a federal injunction found the state was failing to provide basic civil rights including the right to live in less restrictive settings
The state needed to provide the option of living outside an institution, if it was in the best interest of the committed person while still ensuring public safety. Each person has the right to an annual review and to petition for release
Washington built two state-run facilities and opened the door for other community placements
But few regulations or standards were created for these homes
Nor did the state require the homes to be licensed, and most are not. But many other forms of adult care providers, like adult family homes and nursing homes
which dictates requirements like staff training and building and safety inspections
By 2020
which advises the governor and Legislature
said the resulting housing system had “no consistency or oversight.” It added that those looking for housing for McNeil residents “are often forced to use currently existing sex offender housing
This housing is often poor quality or clustered in certain communities.”
In an attempt to fix this, lawmakers in 2021 passed a bill that required DSHS to take over planning for each release
saying the agency was better poised to work with housing providers than were defense attorneys
who for years bore the burden of knocking on landlords’ doors to find housing for their clients
But neither the Legislature nor DSHS have adopted regulations to ensure the safety of residents and the public in line with other adult care facilities
safety or staffing requirements for homes that accept civilly committed individuals
despite many residents’ complex mental health
The only requirement for being paid to house someone from the Special Commitment Center is for the Department of Corrections to conduct an inspection of the residence and for a landlord to agree to follow court conditions. The home must be 500 feet or more from child care facilities and schools
DSHS produces an annual report on violations at the two state-run facilities. The only other oversight comes from the courts and a settlement agreement with Disability Rights Washington over care for residents who have cognitive disabilities
DSHS had long distanced itself from any role in community supervision of McNeil Island residents and the associated liability
the agency has increasingly sought control
supporting bills that would require all housing providers to contract with DSHS to accept residents from the island
said in an interview last year that contracts allow the agency to have more power over the providers
including the ability to inspect homes at will and control costs
But DSHS still can’t fine contracted providers when problems occur
the Special Commitment Center has never independently inspected any of its six contracted homes
DSHS has used contracts to shield itself from potential legal action if something goes wrong
The contracts also give the agency unique control to decide what information a housing provider can share
People have pressed for more information about releases and greater public input and at times
sought to stop anyone from leaving McNeil Island
‘This is how we are protecting your community,’ ” said Rachel Grayless
Grayless and others began digging into information on community placements and grew concerned by gaps
Each Department of Corrections investigation of a placement lists schools
But the inspection for an Enumclaw placement listed some businesses in the wrong towns
and the closest school wasn’t listed at all
“When we are not being informed about known risks that the government is putting into our community
it is challenging to trust the government,” she said
“To our knowledge our reports have been accurate.”
a former state lawmaker and president of Save Our Children Enumclaw
said a lack of trust in DSHS makes it difficult for neighbors living near supervised homes to feel safe
“Our biggest concern is we don’t have any metrics,” she said
The public doesn’t know “whether the treatment program is actually working or not.”
a spokesperson for the Special Commitment Center
“There have been no hands-on offenses while people have been on LRA” in community housing
After the Department of Corrections inspected a Grace and Hope Adult Family Home in Tacoma in 2021 for a new resident
it warned DSHS and courts for the fourth time that the home might not be a good fit
“The DOC is aware of several incidences where residents have been potentially placed at risk of violating their conditions due to Grace and Hope staff errors.”
the new resident was written up for violating court conditions that included speaking to a child at a bowling alley
Another resident was found with inappropriate images of children
Grace and Hope has been cited for violating numerous state licensing requirements and for failing to run background checks on its staff
which DSHS officials knew before signing the contract
Staff failed to properly administer medication and did not keep incident logs
One resident’s chart indicated they should be swallowing pills
state leadership has consistently not prevented problems or provided necessary care
residents have been able to obtain contraband including cigarettes
Numerous floppy disks labeled “kid pictures” were discovered in June in the King County facility
a resident admitted he had the disks and turned them over to staff
Residents have also been found “cultivating a predatory relationship” with more vulnerable residents and female staff
state-run facilities have failed to prevent residents from being in the community without court-ordered supervision
DSHS’ vision for the future of the Special Commitment Center program lies in significantly expanding the number of state-run facilities to other counties
but the agency has been unable to secure new sites
The Sex Offender Policy Board told the Legislature that when the King County location opened in 2005 it was described as “one of the most despised public projects in recent local memory.” The board said in 2020 that it expects finding a new location to break ground “will be just as controversial.”
The cost of housing all civilly committed people
has soared nearly 50% in the past five years
Housing in the community remains the cheapest bed option within the program
accounting for $8.8 million of the Special Commitment Center’s $81 million budget for fiscal year 2024
from $775 to more than $26,000 per person per month
depending on the home and care or supervision needs
according to a 2022 state-commissioned study
Seven housing providers last year wrote to DSHS that they are unwilling to allow the agency unfettered access to their properties without a contract and said the agency has not offered contracts “sufficient to include this level of control over our private properties.”
While Devos said last year that contracts would save the state money
DSHS did not make Devos available for an interview for this article
DSHS spent at least $9.1 million on contracted placements compared with $15 million paid to uncontracted housing providers
according to agency financial documents analyzed by The Times
Yet the uncontracted homes have served more than twice as many residents as the contracted homes
DSHS agreed to pay one provider more than $30,000 per month per bed
which included nursing and supervision costs
according to a state contract reviewed by The Times
It was one of the costliest community placements
Records of the agency’s accounting show significant gaps
according to a Seattle Times review of 10 years of financial records
Nearly $12 million in expenses paid in the past decade are categorized as “not specified,” “unknown” or “other” and have no vendor name or number associated with the expense
“I worked really hard on 5163 (the 2021 bill) to put DSHS in charge because we anticipated they would do better
They have not done a good job,” said Sonja Hardenbrook
a longtime defense attorney for civilly committed individuals in Washington
“the best thing about the whole system are the parts the Special Commitment Center doesn’t control
Without external oversight or accreditation
the Special Commitment Center measures success by how well residents do in their community placements
Rather than succeeding in their placements
people who are sent to live in group homes are informally returned to the island nearly half of the time
according to a Seattle Times analysis of state data
the Department of Corrections or a treatment provider can recommend a return
Being returned to the island “is very damaging,” said Krishan Hansen
a sex offender treatment provider for several McNeil Island residents
“There is limited opportunity for them to act differently
for appropriate relationship development.”
A community placement can be a first step in learning to live a normal life
“All the progress that is made can quickly be undone.”
When civilly committed individuals have access to stable housing and community support, they are less likely to reoffend in a sexual or nonsexual manner, according to a 2020 study of California’s sexually violent predator laws
Only a court can officially revoke a resident’s right to be housed in the community
but DSHS says it can remove people for any reason
Since DSHS was given more control over release planning by the Legislature in 2021
the agency and the Department of Corrections have returned an increasing number of people to the island
either for violating court-ordered conditions or for unrelated issues ranging from criminal conduct by landlords or other residents to minor mental health episodes
a 36% increase over the number returned in the four years prior
court and criminal records found that 1 in 4 people who have been released from civil commitment have gone on to commit new crimes
failing to register as a sex offender and rape
At a small gray apartment building in central Tacoma
only an alley and a chain-link fence divide the building from a playground and two low-income housing complexes with space for up to 68 families
Department of Corrections officers have said these apartments were less than ideal for people on conditional release from McNeil Island
Residents are able to “come and go as they please” with no one to monitor their activities, a corrections officer wrote in an inspection report. The building’s owner “has no means of verifying what’s going on.” By law, it’s up to state officials
Yet it has been a common placement for people from the island
DSHS told the Legislature in 2023 it was hoping to enter into a contract with the provider
but said recently there were concerns one of the homes was not quite 500 feet away from a school
The state has paid the provider at least $680,000 since 2016
Emergency responders have been called to the building 37 times in the past five years
including to provide medical and psychiatric aid
for reports of a suspicious person and for a suicide attempt
who had been convicted twice of raping children before his commitment
was returned to McNeil Island after showing a kitten to children in the parking lot
Some group homes have had more than 70 emergency calls in the five-year period
The Seattle Times found such warnings are regularly raised in Department of Corrections inspection reports yet are often overlooked or ignored by DSHS and courts
residents have been able to have contact with minors
travel in the community without chaperones
use unapproved cellphones and view sexually explicit videos
“It’s my understanding the courts make the decisions on the … placements
That’s not a decision DSHS gets to make.”
who handled civil commitment cases in Kitsap County
said if DSHS “felt an individual was too dangerous to be released
then they have the opportunity to persuade a judge to that effect
We don’t make decisions willy-nilly.”
While a judge has the authority to approve or deny a placement
this is based entirely on the information submitted by state agencies and attorneys
“I don’t think I have ever gone to and observed what an LRA looks like before ordering it
So I rely on what the parties put in their pleadings.”
For anyone labeled and required to register as a sex offender, all of this is complicated by the scarcity of housing and difficulty of finding a willing landlord. Homes have been targeted for violence. In 2005 and 2012
four men were shot at their homes after being identified through sex offender registries
six out of seven units at the Tacoma apartment building were rented to men who had committed sex offenses and were supervised by the Department of Corrections
The seventh was rented by a working mother with three girls under age 6
(The mother was aware of her neighbors’ affiliation with McNeil Island and did not have a problem with it
was routinely able to drive by himself to unallowed locations and failed to comply with court-ordered monitoring
After he was unconditionally released and left the state
he attempted to rape a 74-year-old Maryland woman
When a corrections officer investigated the Tacoma apartment building again in 2021 for another McNeil Island resident
they noted “elevated levels of prostitution and drug activity” and concerns about the resident’s behavior on the island
“It makes living in this area a high-risk situation,” the officer wrote
The family of a child the man molested asked that he not be released to Tacoma
“As parents we don’t want our child now — adult or not — to face the potential of new or renewed trauma that might ensue” from a chance encounter
“What is acceptable risk for the children of the Tacoma community vs
the freedom of an individual who has a strong likelihood of re-offending,” they wrote
attorneys and other stakeholders have grappled with how to reform the Special Commitment Center’s community housing program
“The system currently isn’t working in the way that the public expects it to, and it certainly does not elicit public confidence,” said Rep. Mari Leavitt, D-University Place, who introduced a bill that passed the House in March and the Senate this month and now awaits the governor’s signature
The bill expands the office of the attorney general’s ability to obtain personal records it can use to inform a new sexual civil commitment case
It also stops people from earning parole credit while in the Special Commitment Center program
Most lawmakers involved in sexual civil commitment legislation acknowledged the handful of bills introduced this year were just a piece of the larger issues that need to be addressed
None of the proposals would have created independent oversight or addressed the fundamental questions of whether the program is ultimately improving public safety or resident rehabilitation
Leavitt’s bill was among several supported by DSHS and the attorney general that
would have given the state unprecedented control over community housing off the island
But as Leavitt’s bill advanced, DSHS’ push for more control was stripped out. The original version gave the agency unilateral authority to decide where a resident is housed
to prevent intervention by defense counsel and eliminate uncontracted housing
“DSHS just wants to commandeer the whole process,” said Rep. Roger Goodman, D-Kirkland, chair of the House Community Safety Committee
who opposed the proposal along with prosecutors and defense attorneys
“DSHS frankly has not done such a good job.”
Leavitt’s revised bill adds only piecemeal amendments to parts of sexual civil commitment law
very difficult topic to legislate,” Goodman said
“You can have all the most well-intended laws in place
but McNeil Island doesn’t have enough staff
That makes it difficult to implement any reform or to assess whether we are doing well enough now.”
Rep. Dan Griffey, R-Allyn, who co-sponsored a bill supported by DSHS
said stakeholders are often at odds over how to fix the system
His bill failed to advance earlier this session
but he intends to reintroduce it next year
“They all agree it’s broken,” Griffey said
There is just significant disagreement on what the solution is.”

They all had places to be but I am so grateful they spent some of that journey with me
RANT to whoever is responsible for enforcing up-to-date license tabs
I went from my home to the Wallingford post office

RANT AND RAVE Rant to people who replace toilet rolls in public facilities
Please loosen the end sheet before placing it in the metal holder so we can access the rest of the roll
It’s frustrating to reach for tissue that just spins round and round out of reach
Rave to all those people who work hard to clean and service our public facilities
RAVE to all of our federal Postal Service workers who keep society and commerce running every day
RANT to the dog owner at Discovery Park who gave me the stink eye when my leashed dog had a conniption fit when he was charged by her unleashed dog
a behavior I can almost always manage UNLESS he is charged by an unleashed dog. Given the city’s leash law
it’s pretty clear who deserved the stink eye in this situation
RAVE to all those in Seattle who planted daffodil bulbs in the fall when days were cooler and overcast
there are clusters of daffodils in bloom. Each flower a tiny burst of sunshine awakening us to spring
RANT that despite all our technological advancements
there seems to be no way to resynchronize traffic signals to better manage traffic flow between Everett and Marysville for detours and lane closures during road maintenance
even when there have been notifications well in advance
there seems to be no effort from officialdom whatsoever to intervene in any way to assist with traffic control
Dozens of units respond to the scene of an incident on the road
while zero are dispatched to manage gridlock
RAVE to my neighbor and my neighborhood! An elderly neighbor let me know a windstorm had blown over part of his fence and he couldn’t let the dog out. His family had just left on a trip
I put out a group text to our cul-de-sac and quickly had another neighbor volunteer and go over to put the fence back up
What a blessing to have neighbors like this
RANT to those who haven’t purchased up-to-date license tabs and are driving around with outdated ones
Check your rear license tabs and get up-to-date ones
RANT AND RAVE Rant to dog owners on the trails who don’t leash their dogs despite trail requirements
Not everyone wants to be approached by a dog
you don’t get to subject us to your pet and at the same time
Rave to the increasing number of dog owners I see that when walking their (appropriately leashed) dog
step aside on the sidewalk or trail while holding their dog close so we can pass
It’s the neighborly and responsible thing to do
Keep it up and tell your dog-owner friends
Fernando Rasé: After writing for the first season of Vgly
I realized that the audience is hungry for stories of brown superheroes on screen
a production by Exile Content Studio for HBO
to fill a void in the representation of people with brown skin in modern music and TV series
This video serves as a teaser to preview what will be the TV series
which is currently in development with the production company Campanario Entertainment in Los Angeles
and the executive producer of the series Vgly
“After writing for the first season of Vgly
There is 80% of the population that sees themselves represented there
Diversity should not only be on the screen
We need to generate opportunities within the community so that more writers and creatives can tell their own stories
but I would also even say brown superheroes!” expressed Rasé
Rasé believes that there are no limits to dreaming: “We can have cameras
That’s why I want to aim further and test the limits of my creativity
I identify with Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) and Tyler
They have taken their creativity to unexpected places and have even created businesses with tools that are within our reach.”
HBO Max renews Exile’s Vgly for a second season
RANT to people who insist on calling Capitol Hill “Cap Hill.” I was gone from Seattle for 15 years and came back to this foolishness
When did this neighborhood name butchering start and how can we get it to stop?
RAVE to the Target employees who helped me
The other week was my first solo outing after breaking my ankle
I fainted. At least three employees came to my aid
They are my heroes. I only wish I could remember who they were
RANT to the man who let his dog off leash in the park as he aimlessly sled down the hill
When I politely called out to leash your dog as I was walking by with my two leashed pups
you yelled out “No!” Your dog came closer to us so I was forced to backtrack and leave the area
RAVE to the Village Theatre’s production of “Legally Blonde”
It was an upper in every way. We saw the main character’s understudy and she was superb — peppy
Their first effort to fix the problem failed
Numerous follow-up appointments were made and then canceled/rescheduled by them
RAVE to the Seattle Public Library for extending its hours
And an extra special thanks for staying open during these crazy snow days
RANT to the driver who stopped for less than a second on a red light in downtown Bothell
figured they could beat the bicyclist and pedestrians waiting to enter the crosswalk
and took their “free right turn” in front of them as they stepped off the curb
RAVE to the two parking security workers at the University of Washington outpatient medical center who rescued both my car and me
I talked to an attendant who quickly requested assistance
Both security workers were personable and efficient
They hooked a “defibrillator” to the battery and the car came back to life within minutes
They completed the job so quickly that I didn’t get their names
RANT AND RAVE Rant to the majority of nighttime pedestrians that insist on wearing ALL dark clothing while crossing city streets
RAVE to Lake City for the winter lights in the trees lining the street and the huge tree lit up on 125th and Lake City Way
RAVE to the staff at Krain Corner restaurant in Enumclaw
They found a ring I thought I had lost after having been there for lunch
I called the restaurant and an employee answered
I gave her a description of the ring and my phone number
When my daughter was about 9 or 10 years old
she picked out the ring for my husband to give to me for my birthday
I didn’t think I would ever see it again
RANT to people who drive without their lights on when it’s 7 a.m
RAVE to my neighbor who plays the soundtrack to “Hamilton” every day because it gives her hope
RANT to grocery stores that encourage “customer engagement” chitchat with customers in the checkout line
Please no inane canned questions like “How’s your day going?” or “Any big plans for the weekend?”
RAVE to the Smith Dairy driver who saw that I’d fallen
came over with his first aid kit and then lifted me back up to my feet
Another rave to the urgent care doctor at the UW Ravenna clinic who pulled my eyebrow back together with six tiny stitches
RANT to those shiny white stripes in crosswalks that are so slippery in icy conditions
They are so dangerous that in order for pedestrians to be safe in crosswalks
I grabbed a few items from the Ballard Trader Joe’s before heading to the hospital
Two young men were checking my items out when one of them said pleasantly
what are you doing the rest of the day?” “Oh
I’m having surgery to remove a small tumor from my right breast.” Two deer in headlights
remind them to get a mammogram.” After finishing my groceries
“Blue.” Then he led me to the floral section and pulled out two bouquets of long-stemmed blue irises and handed them to me
RANT to Seattle pedestrians who insist on walking in the street when the sidewalks are empty
I think this habit really took hold during COVID when we were all trying to give each other space
but it’s time to get back on the sidewalk and out of the street
I can’t drive my car on the sidewalk and you are strolling side by side in the street at your walking pace
My car is a hybrid so you can’t even hear me approach and I’m really trying not to scare the life out of you by honking but c’mon now
RANT to the driver who opened their door at a stoplight and tossed their garbage on the road
No human food (like crusts of bread) should be given to birds or ducks
Their tummies will feel full so they won’t eat seeds
RAVE to the amazingly thoughtful employees at the Trader Joe’s in Burien
“Let me bring you a cart,” and then proceeded to help me up the ramp
The employees are always so helpful and seriously kind to the shoppers
RANT to grocery stores that don’t do basic training with their employees on how to bag groceries
Common sense would seem to suggest that soft fruits
vegetables and bread should NOT be placed at the bottom of the bag under heavier grocery items
egg cartons should not be placed on their side
RAVE to the woman wearing a Bikini Kill shirt at the Bainbridge Island Safeway
I wanted to run up to her and tell her that I’d just finished reading Kathleen Hanna’s book “Rebel Girl,” but I thought that would be too forward and overly familiar
RANT to apartment owners who hire landscapers to blow their driveways and parking spaces free of nothing other than a few dried pieces of grass
polluting engine to remove what someone with a broom could sweep up in 10 minutes
RAVE and thank you to my neighbors in Fremont
Six or seven people stepped up and helped me chase after her
One guy even ran and got his bike and some bacon
I can’t thank you all enough for helping me
RANT to neighbors who do not promptly re-stow their emptied garbage/recycling/yard waste cans
A tree fell down across the road the other night around midnight
They raked up all the leaves and picked up the sawdust
RANT AND RAVE Rave to the woman who stopped her car at an intersection in Phinney Ridge so my granddaughter and I could cross the street
Rant to the six cars coming in the opposite direction who didn’t stop
AND to the three drivers who pulled around the woman into the center lane so they could pass her, and even honked at her to move
we were able to cross and I waved thank you to her for at least trying to allow pedestrians to cross
RANT AND RAVE Rave to the gentleman who performed the Heimlich maneuver on another customer in a West Seattle restaurant the other night
He didn’t hesitate to act when he heard the man in the booth next to him making choking noises
I offered to buy the savior a drink or beverage for his heroic deed
RAVE to the two young men on the very crowded southbound light rail train after a Sounders match who gave up their seats for my sister and me
they politely asked if they could sit there
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better
they invited those around them to join in playing heads-up
RAVE to the young man near the University of Washington the other day who stood with his umbrella on the curb and waited for someone who was crossing the sidewalk who needed the umbrella
Then he ran out into the middle of the crosswalk and escorted the person across under his umbrella
protecting them from a torrential downpour
I wonder where people’s generosity and sense of community have gone
RANT to people who leave their flag up 24/7/365 regardless of its condition
If you want it to be more than an ornament
it’s just like holiday lights left up all year-round … just something you’re too lazy to care about
RAVE to Jewell Loyd for her many stellar years as an outstanding professional basketball player for the Storm
Some of your shots were unbelievably perfect
RANT AND RAVE Rave to families supporting their Girl Scouts
Rant to parents at cookie selling stations answering for their daughters and processing the transaction. When I ask a Girl Scout about her scouting I am talking to her
Scouts learn about social interaction and business from cookie sales — the parents need to let them learn
RAVE to Pacific Northwest Ballet’s ravishing new production of “The Sleeping Beauty” at McCaw Hall
thrilling dancing by the PNB soloists and corps de ballet
What a gift to Seattle and ballet lovers everywhere
RAVE to the Pacific Northwest Ballet and its lovely production of “The Sleeping Beauty“
Rave to the company and all the donors who funded it
This is when living in Seattle is at its best
RANT to the passengers who board an airplane with two steamer trunks and a 30-pound duffle bag and expected to stuff them in the overhead bins
Rave to me who said “no” when I was asked to put my one small carry-on under the seat in front of me and my wife had already stored her backpack in front of her
I’m not giving up my leg room so you can bring extra bags on the flight
RANT to all the drivers who drive at night with their bright lights on
blinding other drivers. Please turn off your brights when there is opposing traffic

RAVE to the village that helped bring our newly adopted dog
We scoured the area every day and went on midnight searches
We plastered signs over much of the North End
posted “lost dog” photos and listed her most recent sightings on every social media platform we could think of
The Lost Dogs of King County Facebook page kept us focused and encouraged
Many people who saw Betty running loose took the time to contact us with info that helped us narrow the search
Complete strangers posted that they were looking for our missing dog on their own
Betty was located in a backyard on Greenwood Avenue
Extra raves to both the person who found her for contacting us via the Lost Dogs Facebook page and to the landscaper who made sure Betty was contained
And rave to Timberline Veterinary for admitting her immediately and stabilizing her
RANT to a cable service for bombarding me with comeback offers after I discontinued my service. In the immortal words of Taylor Swift
RAVE to the West Seattle youngster I encountered on a morning walk
who returned my “good morning” greeting with a similar greeting
kids never respond and just keep looking down
Rave to his parents as well for teaching him manners
RANT to the current light rail fare inspection process
The fare inspectors should be able to collect fares
most people would rather take their chances of being inspected than miss the train
And they would gladly pay when inspected … if that were possible
Most people who take mass transit are used to turnstiles or a bus driver
RAVE to the Metro employee who gave me a ride when I took the bus to Palisade restaurant in Magnolia
33 bus let me off on the bridge and GPS did not indicate if I should take the ramp down to the waterfront or up (I guess) to the bluffs
She offered to give me a ride to the restaurant

RANT AND RAVE Rant to the excitable concertgoers who feel they have to get out of their seats to dance and sing to virtually every song
Maybe some of us like to sit back and let the music wash over us
Rave to those who like to just sit back and enjoy the music
Imagine this: You just had a lovely meal at a Seattle restaurant
and you see the tasty Dungeness crab appetizer and that second bottle of wine — followed by the subtotal
a 20% service charge “to ensure staff members are paid a living wage” and
Are you expected to tip if there’s a service charge
To customers feeling sticker shock and check confusion
“Ditto.” With Seattle’s minimum wage set to rise and the city’s tip credit set to expire at year’s end
They know service charges can be unpopular
which some industries stumbled over but moved past
was more of a malignant disease for the restaurant industry
Few have seen a return of pre-pandemic crowds — meanwhile
utilities and credit card fees have skyrocketed.
While Seattle business owners scramble to make ends meet
service fees are one attempt to keep the lights on
But like anything else in the hospitality industry
and what works for a large restaurant might not work for a smaller one
meaning tipped employees must be paid the full minimum wage — tips can’t be factored into their pay rate
Seattle does have a tip credit — for “small” businesses
businesses with 500 or fewer employees can pay a minimum wage of $17.25 per hour
given an employee makes at least $2.72 an hour in tips or gets paid $2.72 hourly toward medical benefits
and those that don’t pay toward medical benefits or don’t have a tipping model
must pay all employees at least $19.97 an hour
when the city’s tip credit will expire and all businesses
It’s the second-highest minimum wage in the country
It’s not just minimum wage workers who will be affected when the tip credit expires
All businesses that currently credit tips toward wages face a $2.72 jump to employee pay rates.
Last month, Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth introduced a bill that would maintain the small/large employer distinction and extend the tip credit indefinitely
An explosive City Council meeting followed
with advocates on both sides of the issue commenting
Restaurant owners say they’re trying to do the same thing as anybody else in Seattle — pay bills
keep their heads above water — but the backlash has been harsh.
attracting more than 1,000 comments.
Hollingsworth withdrew the bill a week later
Business owners see the writing on the wall and are preparing to pay for the wage hike
which could translate to five-figure pinches on bottom lines.
The restaurant alliance is assembling a restaurant industry task force to partner with Mayor Bruce Harrell’s office in seeking a resolution
The goal is an indefinite extension of the tip credit.
Moshi Moshi Sushi & Izakaya owner Charlie Anthe
says the 20% minimum wage hike “in one year is insane,” and that restaurateurs are feeling “angst” and “sheer terror” as the credit expires.
“It’s a clock that is ticking,” Anthe said
“There’s still a lot of desire and push to come to a solution on this and right now it’s lacking an outlet
so that’s where we’re waiting to see what comes out of this conversation with the mayor’s office.”
Some restaurant owners say the heated digital debate is missing the point.
Restaurants haggling with the City Council may come across like they’re opposed to workers earning a fair wage
But when employees are making hundreds of dollars in tips per shift
this isn’t necessarily the difference between an employee making $17.25 and $19.97
but between $27.25 and $29.97 — with the restaurant picking up the tab.
Brandon Pettit runs two well-known Seattle pizza shops
Pettit told The Seattle Times last month that 2023’s sales figures were one-third of 2019’s
and he estimated Delancey will lose around half its annual profits when the tip credit ends
Fighting to protect the tip credit isn’t a matter of restaurant owners punishing workers
“affects tipped employees who are already making two to three times the minimum wage.”
When the tip credit expires and pay rates bump nearly $3 per hour
Pettit estimates it will cost $50,000 for a restaurant Delancey’s size
already-high Seattle menu prices will surge
Pettit figures many restaurants will switch to a service charge
Implementing a service charge turns wages earned in tips into taxable wages
which is another hit on the bottom line — “so you’re screwed either way,” Pettit said.
He sees the tip credit’s demise as the latest hurdle in a racket that keeps getting tougher in Seattle. There’s decreased business overall, paired with rising costs of labor, goods, credit card fees, inflation. There’s the cost of persistent property damage
Service fees are one method of offsetting higher costs
But customer reactions can be mixed.
Jen Doak recently got an email from a customer about her Newcastle restaurant
They said the food and service were “terrific,” but when they got the bill
“this is where our experience took a turn.” They felt the surcharge on their bill “takes advantage of patrons” and said they wouldn’t recommend the restaurant to friends
It’s the same at Doak’s Ballard businesses Red Arrow Coffee and Brimmer & Heeltap
Halfseas employs workers with wine knowledge; the 23% service fee helps pay for their higher base wages
“I recognize the surcharge is not a one-size-fits-all approach and I too am a bit conflicted by it,” Doak responded
“Having owned a restaurant in Seattle now for 10 years
“Personnel costs have gone up at least 20%
credit card fees have increased annually,” Doak said
She pays nearly $5,000 a month in processing fees
Costs of goods have increased between 10 and 20% annually
while garbage and recycling at Brimmer & Heeltap is $1,000 a month
Fees at her businesses help cover those costs
The restaurant rule of thumb is that revenue should be divided into thirds to stay solvent
one-third should to food and beverage inventory
which will grow further unbalanced when the tip credit expires
“We’re nowhere near the third for personnel,” Doak said
for some restaurants — especially big operations with high ticket averages and/or multiple locations — a 20% service charge is effective and lucrative
says he will “never go back” to a tipping model
Mackay talked with a new front-desk employee at the Bellevue El Gaucho
she said she was getting paid $13.50 an hour on paper and around $20 with tips
Nordstrom is advertising $17,” Mackay said
Minimum wage plus tips for entry-level workers
Mackay spent three months hosting roundtables with staff and regulars to talk about how to ditch tipping
The end result was to charge a 20% service fee and keep an additional tip line
Front-of-house staffers get paid a base rate plus 15% commission on sales and they keep any additional tips they receive.
dedicated clientele and impeccable service done by tuxedoed waiters
That level of service is a reason why a 20% service charge works
Sacchetti is a server who has worked for El Gaucho on and off since 2000
he works three nights a week at the Seattle steakhouse
Working three shifts a week allows him flexibility (he’s also a musician and a real estate agent) and he makes between $75,000 and $80,000 a year
You can’t just be a hack and think you can wait tables there.”
Restaurateur Ethan Stowell moved the majority of his two-dozen-plus restaurants to a service charge model at the beginning of the year
It was an attempt to answer a question: “Are tips really a relevant thing anymore?”
He would rather ensure his employees are able to take advantage of state-run programs that pay out based on income
treating that ledger item like standard income
spots like Tavolàta and Victor Tavern had a 22% service charge with an additional tip line
but Stowell is phasing toward an even 20% charge with no additional tip line.
there’s not big debates about who gets tips,” Stowell said
Every hour you work you can make $35 an hour
If you want to take care of your co-workers
Ethan Stowell Restaurants and El Gaucho are large employers with weight to throw around
But there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to tipping or service fees
Restaurateurs are figuring out what works best for their individual situations
and service charges aren’t always the fix for small businesses.
Familyfriend owner Elmer Dulla is “totally against the service charge.” The small restaurant has a tip pool
splitting tips and sharing duties; kitchen staffers bring out food and the serving staff washes dishes.
owner of Michelin-starred Sushi by Scratch
and his employees have solid benefits — but Lee hopes to cut that fee by 2025
that would bring a 17-course omakase dinner to $225 per person.
When chef Brendan McGill’s Bainbridge Island seafood restaurant Seabird opened in 2022
there was a 20% service charge on each bill
There was pushback and McGill was worried that it turned dinners from “hospitable to transactional.” He soon realized the service fee wasn’t working
“We were just wildly unprofitable for that entire era
With the service charge and taxes and tips
we weren’t anywhere close to breaking even,” McGill said.
McGill now charges a 5% surcharge at his sit-down restaurants: Bruciato
There is no surcharge at his two casual Café Hitchcock locations
it helps the core employees and the managers,” McGill said
“It will help you pay the dishwasher more and give the manager an incentive.”
Why not raise prices instead of maintaining the fee
McGill said it’s the easiest option on the back end
and that increasing prices only works if there are enough regular customers to order the menu items.
“Having this separately creates a really clean pool
“We can do a 5% service charge and use it to pay people even when it’s slow
Others say even a small percentage service fee isn’t worth the trouble
“If I’m looking at a bill and see 10.35% tax
4% surcharge and a tip line?” Niehoff asked rhetorically
I thought this thing I ate was $20.’ I was feeling the pain of the guest.”
Niehoff went from answering 10 questions a week about the fee to none
But Niehoff stresses that doesn’t mean she’s rolling in cash
everybody gets tipped out and I work the floor,” Niehoff said
She scrubs toilets and launders linens in addition to working as one of two servers
“The reason it works for us is because the owner of the business owns it
which keeps my tip percentage high enough to have a level of retention.”
her kitchen staff is small — and “exhausted.” With only three people working busy nights
what it stands for and the sliver of her neighborhood that she’s carved out as her own
But she’s one of many restaurant owners feeling helpless as they search for solutions.

The skeletal muscle tissue in the adult is relatively stable under normal conditions but retains a striking ability to regenerate by its resident stem cells (satellite cells)
Satellite cells exist in a quiescent (G0) state; however
they reenter the cell cycle and start proliferating to provide sufficient progeny to form new myofibers or undergo self-renewal and returning to quiescence
Maintenance of satellite cell quiescence and entry of satellite cells into the activation state requires autophagy
a fundamental degradative and recycling process that preserves cellular proteostasis
satellite cell regenerative capacity declines
Enhancing autophagy in aged satellite cells restores their regenerative functions
underscoring this proteostatic activity’s relevance for tissue regeneration
Here we describe two strategies for assessing autophagic activity in satellite cells from GFP-LC3 reporter mice
which allows direct autophagosome labeling
Treatment of GFP-LC3 or WT satellite cells with compounds that interfere with autophagosome-lysosome fusion enables measurement of autophagic activity by flow cytometry and immunofluorescence
the methods presented permit a relatively rapid assessment of autophagy in stem cells from skeletal muscle in homeostasis and in different pathological scenarios such as regeneration
Scheme of the satellite cell myogenic program
SCs are normally in quiescence and enter a myogenic cycle upon stress conditions such as injury
Activation of SCs can be determined by the co-expression of Pax7 and the myogenic regulatory factor MyoD
Proliferating SCs later differentiate into differentiated/committed progenitors characterized by the downregulation of Pax7 expression and the induction of Myog expression
These differentiated cells will eventually fuse into myofibers
A subset of the proliferating SCs will return to quiescence through the process of self-renewal
targeted cytoplasmic constituents are degraded in lysosomes
The process of autophagy includes four steps: (i) initiation/nucleation where the phagophore is formed and starts engulfing the cargo
(ii) formation of the phagosome by elongation and maturation of the phagophore
(iii) fusion of the phagosome with the lysosome
and (iv) degradation of the internal material by lysosomal hydrolases
Bafilomycin A1 is used to measure autophagy flux through the inhibition of autophagolysosome formation
Because quiescent SCs exist in low numbers in resting muscles
and have a low proportion of cytoplasm/nucleus (consistent with their quiescent state)
the study of dynamic cytoplasmic processes
we show different methods to study autophagy in SCs
C57BL/6 (wild type, WT) and GFP-LC3 (Mizushima et al., 2004) mice were used in this study. All experiments were carried in young (3–4 months old) male mice. Mice were kept in standard cages with food and water ad libitum. All animals were sacrificed between 9:00 and 10:00 am by cervical dislocation to avoid circadian changes in autophagy (Solanas et al., 2017)
All animal experiments were approved by the Ethics Committee of the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) and by the Catalan Government
by the Animal Care and Ethics Committee of the Spanish National Cardiovascular Research Center (CNIC) and
Muscles were collected from fore and hind limbs in cold DMEM (Gibco 41965-039) with 1% Penicillium/Streptomycin (P/S) (15140-122) into 50 mL Falcon tubes
Any visible fat and connective tissue were removed before mincing muscles with scissors
Cleaned and minced muscles were collected into a M tube (Miltelnyi Biotec
GentleMACSTM) and digestion medium (8 mL) was added
Digestion medium was freshly prepared with DMEM containing Liberase 0.1 mg/g muscle weight (Roche
M tubes were placed onto Miltelnyi tissue dissociator under the program 37C_mr_SMDK_1
tubes were kept 5 min on ice to sediment the sample and 5 mL of FBS (Sigma-Aldrich F7524) was added to block the enzymatic digestion
digested muscles were transferred to a 50 mL Falcon tube and rinsed up to 40 mL with cold DMEM 1% P/S (Optional: cold DMEM can be used to rinse M tubes in order to collect leftovers and transferred to the same Falcon tube)
Muscle homogenates were filtered through 100 and 70 μm cell strainers (SPL Lifescience
93100 and 93070) consecutively and centrifuged at 50 × g for 10 min at 4°C
The supernatant was collected in a new Falcon tube and centrifuged at 600 × g for 10 min at 4°C
The supernatant was then discarded and the pellet was incubated for 10 min on ice (protected from light) with 1 mL of 1X RBC lysis buffer (eBioscience
00-4333-57) to eliminate the excess of erythrocytes
30 mL of 1X PBS was added and filtered through a 40 μm cell strainer (SPL Lifescience
Filtered cell suspension was centrifuged at 600 × g for 10 min at 4°C and after discarding the supernatant
the cell pellet was resuspended in 1 mL of DMEM with 1% P/S to count the number of cells for each sample
cell suspension was centrifuged at 600 × g for 10 min at 4°C and resuspended in cold FACS buffer (1% P/S
16210-064) in 1X PBS) containing antibody mixture at a ratio of 1 × 106 cells/100 μL antibody mixture for 1 h at 4°C (protected from light)
The antibody mixture contained antibodies for negative and positive selection of QSCs in FACS buffer
PE-Cy7-conjugated anti-CD45 (Biolegend 103114)
anti-Sca-1 (Biolegend 108114) and anti-CD31 (Biolegend 102418) antibodies were used for lineage-negative selection at a ratio of 0.5 μL antibody/100 μL FACS buffer
Alexa Fluor 647-conjugated anti-CD34 (BD Pharmigen 560230) and PE-conjugated anti-α7-integrin (AbLab AB10STMW215) were used for double-positive staining of QSCs at a ratio of 3 μL/100 μL and 1 μL/100 μL FACS buffer respectively
single staining and FMO controls can be included to set up correctly the gates
samples were rinsed up to 30 mL of FACS buffer and centrifuged at 600 × g for 10 min at 4°C to wash the excess of antibodies
Samples were then resuspended in 300 μL FACS buffer with DAPI (1 μg/mL) (Invitrogen
Sca1–/CD31–/CD45–/CD34+/α7-integrin+ SCs were collected into Eppendorf tubes containing 100 μL of collection medium (Ham’s F10 (Biowest L0140-500)
20% FBS) at 4°C using a FACS Aria II (BD Biosciences)
Prior to antibody staining and quiescent SC isolation by FACS
samples (already resuspended in 1 mL of DMEM with 1% P/S) were centrifuged at 600 × g for 10 min at 4°C
The cell pellet was resuspended in 1 mL of collection medium
Each sample was split into two new 2 mL Eppendorf tubes for Bafilomycin A1 (10 nM; Sigma
D2540) treatment for 4 h at 37°C 5% CO2
antibody staining for SC isolation was performed as mentioned above
Freshly sorted SCs were cultured on 15-well plastic slides (μ-Slide Angiogenesis ibiTreat: Ibidi
81506) previously coated with collagen type I (Corning
354236) in growth medium [GM; collection medium supplemented with recombinant bFGF (Preprotech
A total number of 3000 SCs per well were homogenously distributed plated
cells were treated with Bafilomycin A1 at 10 nM or DMSO during the last 4 h for activation and proliferation SCs states
Cells were then fixed at 24 and 72 h respectively
GFP fluorescence signal was recorded from at least 10.000 Sca1–/CD31–/CD45–/CD34+/α7-integrin+ SCs in each sample
GFP-LC3 fluorescence positive signal was determined comparing to the corresponding negative control sample (wild-type sample without GFP fluorescence)
Median fluorescence intensity (MFI) of the whole GFP histogram signal for SCs was analyzed
Autophagy flux was determined as the relative change of GFP-LC3 MFI between DMSO and Bafilomycin A1 treated samples
Isolated quiescent SCs were plated onto 15-well plastic slides (μ-Slide Angiogenesis ibiTreat: Ibidi
slides were coated with 0.1% Poli-L-Lysin (Sigma
P8920) in distilled water (it can be reused) for 30 min at room temperature (RT) and air-dried
3000 SCs per well were seeded into the 15-well slides
1X PBS can be added to the wells in order to ensure that the cell suspension is equally distributed
the slides were then centrifuged at 50 × g for 10 min
the supernatant was removed and cells were fixed with 30 μL of 4% PFA for 10 min at RT
slides can be stored with 1X PBS 0.05% azide at 4°C
It is recommended to fill completely each well and cover them with parafilm to avoid PBS evaporation

Satellite cell isolation by FACS and subsequent analysis of autophagy through flow cytometry
(A) Representative example of the FACS strategy and gating scheme to isolate quiescent SCs (QSCs) rom resting muscles
(B) Representative example of histogram of LC3-GFP intensity (left panel) and analysis of the mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) by flow cytometry (right panel) in QSCs treated for 4 h with vehicle (DMSO) or BafA1 prior to their isolation by FACS (n = 4)

The autophagy flux can be assessed by measuring relative levels of p62 or measuring the ratio between the lipidated form of LC3 (LC3-II) and the unconjugated form (LC3-I) (Kabeya, 2004) from protein extracts (granted that enough material is available to perform standard Western blotting)
the low numbers of freshly isolated SCs per mg of muscle tissue and their reduced cytoplasmic content
make this option unfeasible unless the starting material is scaled up (pooling tissue from several mice per experiment)

GFP-LC3 can be incorporated into protein aggregates (Hara et al., 2006; Komatsu et al., 2006)
and given that protein synthesis (and probably protein aggregates) increases upon cell division
the transgene would be more prone to be incorporated into these aggregates in activated and proliferating SCs
mainly if the reporter’s cellular levels are high
This possibility could explain why the differences in autophagy flux ratios in WT and transgenic SCs are higher upon SC cell cycle entry while remaining more similar at quiescence
the distinct background observed with endogenous LC3 staining may also influence autophagosome detection and subsequent ratio determinations
The small proportion of SCs present in steady-state skeletal muscle and their reduced cytoplasm in the quiescent state after sorting
challenges the monitoring of autophagy in these cells
The protocols reported here enable quiescent SC isolation by FACS from resting murine skeletal muscle tissue using standard laboratory equipment and allows us to study their autophagy activity at distinct myogenic stages
We describe different experimental strategies for autophagy flux determination by either flow cytometry or immunofluorescence in quiescent SCs and their activated and proliferating progeny
These methods provide the scientific community with useful approaches for assessing autophagy in scenarios in which autophagy is genetically altered or in aging and disease conditions

A planned housing development will add 67 affordable housing units near Lewis Road in Camarillo.
The Camarillo City Council gave developers Many Mansions and the Area Housing Authority for the County of Ventura the go-ahead last week to build affordable apartments and townhouses on the 2.5 acres of land where Stock Building Supply once stood
“This type of a project doesn’t come before us very much,” Councilman Kevin Kildee said
“I have been on this council for 25 years
and this is the first project of this magnitude in affordability that I’ve seen.”
to be located at 2800 Barry St., will be called Vista Campanario Apartments and Vista Campanario Apartments
"vista campanario" means view of the bell tower
Mary Magdalen Chapel in Old Town Camarillo
Developers will construct 59 apartments that will be restricted to extremely low-income
Low-income households make up to 80% of the area median income
Very low-income households earn up to 50% and extremely low-income households make up to 30%
according to the city's housing element. The current area median income in Camarillo is $92,913
three-bedroom townhomes that will be sold to low-income families.
Fourteen of the apartments will be reserved for households with family members who are disabled or veterans
Seven of the units will be single-occupancy units
studio-type apartments with their own kitchen and bathroom intended to be rented for one or more months at a time
executive director of the Area Housing Authority of the County of Ventura
said tenants will only pay 30% of their income in rent each month
A family of three earning $50,000 a year will pay about $1,250 per month for a two bedroom apartment
Nigh said the average market rate for a similar apartment is about $2,400 a month,
“This is going to be a model on how you can do affordable housing well,” Councilwoman Susan Santangelo said
“How you can do it and still maintain the character of your community and be able to meet the housing need of so many.”
The developers will build a 60th apartment for the property manager in addition to the 59 affordable units
picnic and barbecue area, community room and laundry facilities
A total of 128 parking spaces will be provided in a two-story parking garage
though some of the spaces will be located outside of the structure
The townhouses will have their own two-car garages.
'Shock to the system': Camarillo renter fights back against ever increasing payments
Nigh anticipates construction to begin as early as December 2022 with residents moving in on July 1
a year before the original estimated completion date.
The total estimated cost for the project is approximately $37 million
the City Council changed the designated use of the property from industrial and commercial to high-density residential
The council also changed the zoning from light manufacturing to residential development with a maximum of 30 housing units per acre.
The project’s 67 affordable housing units can help the city meet guidelines set forth by the state
According to Camarillo’s housing element
the state is recommending the city support the construction of 597 affordable housing units by 2029.
The housing element is a document that identifies the housing needs within the city and offers solutions to those needs
The City Council also approved a waiver for the requirement to underground surrounding utility lines and poles
The city will donate the 2.5-acre property to the developers
which was purchased in 2018 for $3.6 million
to support the construction of the project
Lee said. The city will also issue a $4.9 million
During a public hearing at last week's City Council meeting
local resident Stephan Lovstedt said he was concerned about the number of residents the residential development would add to the area
He explained street parking is already crowded and wondered how the flow of traffic would be affected.
“Less people in a small area seems like a nicer community to live in,” Lovstedt said.
a member of the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters Local 805
He acknowledged that while an environmental assessment of the project found no significant impact on the quality of the human environment
it failed to adequately account for air quality and greenhouse gas emissions.
“How do you study an out-of-area workforce coming from Lancaster or Santa Maria,” Delgato said
“That’s a lot of vehicles on the road.”
he encouraged the developers to hire local contractors and subcontractors to help the carpenters union's apprentices grow in their careers.
Nigh said the Area Housing Authority of Ventura County has a record of hiring local skilled laborers and encourages its general contractors to do the same.

Using mouse models and human samples, a team from Clínic-IDIBAPS has detected that low expression of the ZEB1 gene increases the size of atherosclerosis plaques and the possibility of suffering a cardiovascular accident. This work has been work published in the journal Nature Communications (original article at doi: 10.1038/s41467-023-43896-7)
Atherosclerosis is a wall artery disease characterized by fat accumulation that
results in atherosclerotic plaque formation
macrophages become trapped inside the plaque and increase the size
Larger plaques are less stable and prone to rupture
a process that can trigger cardiovascular accidents like heart attack or stroke
To identify the ZEB1 gene as a protection agent against atherosclerosis, the IDIBAPS research group Gene Regulation in Stem Cells, Cellular Plasticity and Differentiation, and Cancer used mice that did not express that gene in their macrophages
The research team observed that these mice had larger atherosclerotic plaques
they discovered that this increase was due to the fact that macrophages that did not express ZEB1 accumulated more cholesterol inside due to a defect that prevented them from expelling it
“These results presented ZEB1 as a protective agent against the formation of atherosclerotic plaques -says M Carmen Martínez Campanario
ZEB1 would accelerate the expulsion of cholesterol from macrophages
These results were corroborated in humans using samples of atherosclerotic plaques from patients; those with less ZEB1 also appeared more unstable
the protective effect of ZEB1 also seemed to have an effect on general cardiovascular health
since patients with less ZEB1 reported a greater number of cardiovascular accidents
“These generalized effects of ZEB1 are due to the fact that ZEB1 also inhibits the production by macrophages of inflammatory substances
that aggravate the disease,” says Martínez Campanario
In collaboration with researchers from the University of Barcelona
the study has generated nanoparticles that carry ZEB1 targeted to macrophages that ingest them and thus increase the expression of ZEB1
The administration of these nanoparticles with ZEB1 reduced the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in mice and reversed the accumulation of cholesterol in macrophages
M Carmen Martínez Campanario concludes: “The work reveals the role of ZEB1 in atherosclerosis through the regulation of the macrophage
the nanoparticles may allow us to develop new treatment strategies
not only for atherosclerosis but also other metabolic alterations associated with this disease due to their widespread effect."
In addition to other researchers from the same group and other groups in the IDIBAPS
researchers from the National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases (CNIC)
and the Santa Creu and Sant Pau Research Institute have participated in the study
The study has been financed by various organizations
mainly by the Agency for the Management of University and Research Grants (AGAUR) of the Generalitat of Catalonia and the State Research Agency of the Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN)

The bar at a country club in Querétaro has decided to stick with a new rule: no women allowed
The Campanario announced this week that the Hoyo 19 bar will remain closed to women
The Querétaro city club first announced the controversial men-only policy on September 7
a group of members gathered more than 200 signatures on a petition requesting that the decision be reversed
the chairwoman of the board of directors resigned her position in protest and issued an open letter expressing her disagreement with the board’s values
Critics say denying female club members entry to Hoyo 19 violates women’s rights as well as local
national and international laws and treaties that guarantee equality for women
El Campanario partially reversed the decision
saying that both men and women would be allowed on Hoyo 19’s outdoor terraces
though women would still be prohibited from entering the main area of the bar
the club said the Hoyo 20 bar will be a women-only space after 1 p.m
While the introduction of a women-only space was satisfactory for some critics
others said the issue of discrimination was not resolved by giving women a separate area of their own
which constitutes discrimination against women,” some members said
One report said the measure was introduced in response to complaints the club had received over the use of foul language by men inside the bar

If a visit to Ballard is on your list of local urban walks this spring
the system of waterways that allows boats to pass from the freshwater of the Lake Washington Ship Canal to the saltwater of Puget Sound
and make your way to the Ballard bell tower about a mile away in the heart of the neighborhood
If you fear that the 21 parking spots at the little park will be taken
or running!) down the 33rd Avenue West pedestrian bridge from Magnolia
a little-known passage that crosses over the railroad tracks (sorry
The out-and-back excursion is a bit over 2 miles
Here’s a handy little map of my route and some recommended stops where I drew along the way:
A plaque on the ground reads: “Walking in the land of salmon and raven
Early April is egg-laying and -incubating season for the great blue herons that live near Commodore Park
so make sure not to disturb the graceful birds
I counted as many as 27 herons up on their nests and watched a few flying in and out
Salmon won’t start passing through the Ballard Locks’ fish ladder until mid-June
with peak viewing usually happening in mid-September
But since the fish ladder viewing room was renovated in 2021 with comfier seating
it’s worth stepping inside this space any time of the year
I love the whimsical “Salmon Waves” sculptures by artist Paul Sorey sitting right above the fish ladder
They are a nice complement to the industrial aesthetic of the Locks
I watch quite a few cyclists walking their bikes
5. I have been aboard an Argosy cruise before, back in 2019 on a “Husky Boat” tour and also during the Christmas Ship Festival
How fun to see another Argosy vessel today as it enters the small chamber of the Locks on its way to Elliott Bay
Watching the boat traffic at the Locks never fails to entertain
7. Facing the railroad bridge from the north shoreline of the bay, I come across “A Salish Welcome,” a formidable sculpture by the late local artist Marvin Oliver
which holds a dish representing the salmon life cycle
“greets us and reminds us that we are stewards of this evolving living landscape for new generations of salmon and people alike.”
9. Wandering off the beaten path sometimes pays off. From the National Nordic Museum on Market Street, I walk south on 28th Avenue Northwest to find a Seattle shoreline street end I had yet to discover
My sketch is made a bit more animated when a dog jumped in the water while his owner watched
the Limback Lumber building is impossible to miss
“Since 1930,” as the sign in the shape of a handsaw on the facade reads
this business has been serving the Northwest with a great inventory of lumber and building materials
The presence of the industrial facility contrasts with the apartment buildings that have sprung up along the street in recent years
The red brick Ballard Centennial Bell Tower was built to house the bell that hung above Ballard’s City Hall when the neighborhood was an independent city at the turn of the 20th century
Here’s where my urban sketch walk comes to an end at a fitting time
just like it used to more than 100 years ago when the mill workers left their jobs for the day

A GLEAMING sailboat named Happy is making a stop at the Port of Edmonds after a speedy sail at 11.2 knots from Bainbridge
It doesn’t take long for the sleek Moody Decksaloon 45
a German-built vessel owned by Hugh and Lynn Creasy
to draw the attention of a few passersby walking along the waterfront on this windy morning
Following their lifelong dream of living on and working remotely from a boat full time after their children left for college, the Creasys purchased the Happy in 2019 in Sweden and traded landlocked life outside Portland for a slip at Shilshole Marina last fall.
I could never imagine myself living on a boat (all that bobbing up and down on the water!)
but Hugh and Lynn say the transition into the Happy has not been hard for them
especially when you consider some of the features packed in such a tiny space: three cabin rooms
two bathrooms with separate showers; a kitchen; a washer and dryer; a system that makes drinkable water out of seawater by reverse osmosis; and folding kayaks to paddle to shore when they need to stretch out
The Creasys and their laid-back chihuahua
are just starting a six-month sail along the Pacific Northwest and the Canadian coast
the first of what they hope will be many adventures aboard their new home
“Be right back. Exploring the world,” is our life motto, says Lynn, who is documenting the picture-perfect “Sailing Happy” experience on Instagram
Seattle arts administrator Jordan Monez feels like a different person these days
busy with concerts and art openings four to five nights a week
The reasons are a cocktail of prioritizing rest and being more mindful about which projects and organizations to support
mixed with the financial pressures of inflation and student loans.
“We’ve all had a chance to really think about what we like
what gives us energy — or the opposite,” Monez said.
According to a Fall 2023 Arts Survey conducted by The Seattle Times
concert halls and museums in the same way and numbers as in the “Before Times.” More than 60% of organizations say ticket sales are still down compared with the last pre-pandemic year.
The Seattle Times asked King County cultural organizations to fill out a survey (comparing the period of July 2018-June 2019 to the same period in 2022-2023) to understand better where the sector is on the path to recovery
We received responses from 144 organizations
spanning a wide variety — from nonprofit theaters to for-profit galleries
major museums and more — and a geographical radius ranging from Kent to Redmond to Vashon Island to Seattle.
A picture emerged: If the pandemic was a major storm
the arts are still traversing a turbulent sea
costs are escalating and eating into revenues
A few organizations said they were running deficits and drawing on reserves
lines of credit or the last remains of relief funding to fill in the gaps
or scaling back staffing and programming.
This year is shaping up to be busier and better than last
with several organizations feeling “cautiously optimistic” about the upcoming season
Various organizations are finding success with increased and diversified offerings
collaborations and community-based approaches.
Some organizations are betting on this upcoming season to turn the ship around — and potentially get more folks through the doors and more donations in the virtual jar — but most expect the seas to stay choppy for at least a few more years
And with the lifeline of COVID relief disappearing
treacherous rapids lurk beyond the horizon
As one respondent put it: “The arts are still in recovery.”
MORE ON LOCAL ARTS THIS FALL
overall ticket sales are still well below pre-pandemic levels: down 23% across various art forms and venues
People also tend to decide much more last-minute
Another troubling stat: Nearly eight in 10 surveyed organizations offering subscriptions and memberships say that those sales are down
according to numbers from the 20 organizations that provided this information
Long the backbone upon which organizations build their budgets and programming — subscription revenue helps tide things over when times are slow and ensures funding for more adventurous programming — these trends are majorly destabilizing and make it much harder to plan for the future.
one of the largest nonprofit theaters in the Pacific Northwest
The number of tickets issued (including complimentary tickets) at the Rep fell 46% from the 2018-19 season to 2022-23
“It’s definitely not business as usual,” said Jeffrey Herrmann, Seattle Rep’s managing director
this crisis that we’re seeing in the field.”
Surveyed organizations identified a host of reasons
Some of this can be traced back to a cultural and generational shift already in motion before
the pandemic; older patrons aren’t returning in the same numbers or have passed away
And people’s habits and preferences have changed.
According to art data firm IMPACTS Research
one of the top reasons audiences in Washington state are staying away is simply that they prefer another fun activity
like attending a movie or sports event or staying home and browsing the internet or streaming a TV show or movie
(Other reasons include finding it hard to get there
When people do go to arts events, it seems their tastes have shifted. As managing director of the small nonprofit Washington Ensemble Theatre by day and a stage manager for drag and burlesque events by night
Maria Manness can’t help but notice the contrast
they’ll often have to wait to start the show to squeeze people in
“I promise that that is not a problem we’re having at WET.”
“People want to go to the theater and have a good time,” the Rep’s Herrmann said
“People are really looking for entertainment and escape.” It makes historical sense
that was the greatest flowering of movie musicals and Broadway musicals of all time
But Herrmann is wary of blaming the audience
It’s your fault: You’re not programming [or marketing] in a way that is attractive,” he said.
Many venues also note that inflation plays a significant role
“All it really comes down to is money
from our experience,” wrote Ricky Graboski of the all-ages music venue The Vera Project in the survey
“Seattle is more expensive than ever before.”
IMPACTS Research confirms that Washington audiences say inflation
and general concerns about the economy are current barriers.
All this means that folks are pickier and may take fewer risks
we found bigger name artists’ ticket sales were not as affected as all the smaller
local and regional artists’ events,” wrote Executive Director Allison Halstead Reid
“Example: Ladysmith Black Mambazo almost sold out but a relatively unknown virtuoso pianist barely drew 25% attendance.”
Most nonprofits don’t rely entirely on ticket sales in “normal” times but rather on a mix of income streams
The issue: donations and grants have also become harder to predict
Some organizations surveyed said grants and donations increased
One notable trend: Corporations seem to have pulled back from giving
and competition for grants seems more fierce.
Soaring costs have made this wobbly equation all the more shaky
The Vashon Center for the Arts’ water bill
Materials and shipping have become even more expensive
“We literally are being priced out of our town where our arts organization was founded,” said Encanto Arts
a youth-focused arts nonprofit in West Seattle.
The Rep said its personnel costs have increased 37%
driven by inflation and compensation increases to advance equity within the organization
Other groups echoed this: People in the arts have long worked for pennies
and it’s high time wages kept up with Seattle’s high cost of living
But doing right by people is putting more pressure on the budgets.
surveyed organizations say costs are up between 15% to 50%.
executive director of literary nonprofit Hugo House
With costs increasing and revenue from classes
“We are now beginning to talk to staff about what the future could potentially hold or not hold.”
This financial instability doesn’t just impact organizations’ bottom line and the people who work there
It may also influence what we see on the stages and walls
It could mean that fewer new works get made
or that risk-taking gets clipped in favor of surefire hits and blockbusters.
Some worried about getting stuck in a “negative cycle.” Lower foot traffic often hurts donations and can jeopardize the ability to secure sponsorships
as attendance figures are often used as indicators of reach and impact
Fewer shows and shorter runs mean less word-of-mouth
Lower staffing levels could mean less high-quality work that could lure audiences back.
Could retreating only make things worse?
But you can’t pass deficit budgets indefinitely
“We’re asking ourselves — and everybody in the industry is asking themselves — how much runway do we have to keep making those investments before we need to see them pay off?”
“The arts were already on life support before the pandemic,” said Elisheba Johnson, co-founder of Central District art space Wa Na Wari
“How can you expect the whole sector to rebound when it was already struggling?”
In the early months of the pandemic, it was fairly straightforward to sum up the state of the arts: Everyone was suffering, and many smaller organizations risked falling through the cracks of relief funding
A different pattern seems to be emerging now
with larger organizations losing more ground when it comes to ticket sales
ticket sales for large organizations dropped 26% compared with 20% at medium-sized organizations
Overall ticket sales increased by 16% at small organizations
in part thanks to a few standout performers
smaller organizations have also seen more of an increase in grants
Midsized organizations indicated they saw an increase as well. Larger organizations noted more decreases
according to various groups: The way the pie is divvied up may have changed
That means that more organizations are now vying for the same funding
and various organizations have seen their piece of the pie shrink.
This size schism may also be present in the theater sector.
Taproot Theatre reducing the number of performances per play and cutting staff hours — some of the surveyed theaters seem to be bucking the trend and holding on or even doing fairly well
Those are mainly small- and a few midsized theaters
which have less overhead and often rely on volunteer power — perhaps putting them in a nimbler position to weather the storm
they usually don’t have endowments or much cash reserves to fall back on.)
“Being a small to midsized company, we are able to sell tickets, pay our bills, and create opportunity for artists,” noted Reboot Theatre Company
Any larger and we would have some serious difficulty maintaining our company.”
kept selling dozens of tickets at the door
he wondered: “Am I going to have a seat for myself?”
“Sometimes I feel like I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop because we’re doing actually kind of well for ourselves,” Tang said.
Tang attributed the organization’s success to three strategies: Very “defined constituencies,” with stories that appeal to Asian Americans and science fiction and pop culture fans
or mythological Filipino shape-shifters with an all-Filipino cast
“The Filipino community is hungry for stories about their community,” he noted.
Another successful strategy is coproductions
which help organizations pool resources and expand audiences
“Joy Market,” PFP’s collaboration with Jet City Improv this past May
Another successful approach: “name-your-price” tickets
Moving to this model has increased ticket revenue
and helped PFP pay artists more (though many still work for a stipend)
roughly 10% of respondents indicated they’ve gone to a pay-what-you-want model.
But it’s largely smaller (and a few medium-sized) organizations that are shifting to this model
which raises the question: Is it more challenging for larger organizations to steer their big ships in a new direction and — to bring back a pandemic term — pivot?
who repeatedly noted they needed to rethink the current business model that is simply not working.
Organizations said much more investment is needed: in arts journalism and criticism
in the artists who make the art and in the nonprofits who create the jobs and contribute to the local economy.
The Wing Luke’s Barraquiel Tan sees a path forward not just in stressing how much art contributes to the economy
but also to a “well society,” as he puts it
“Let’s not think of art as this little thing on the side,” he said
“Let’s think of it as the driver.”

COSTA RICA'S LEADING ENGLISH LANGUAGE NEWSPAPER
It silently snatches its prey in the night
It’s one of the most widely distributed birds in the world
The barn owl (Tyto alba) is also known as the common barn owl in English (we’ll get into how common it is in a bit)
There are a plethora of names in Spanish including lechuza
I like using lechuza de campanario because I’ve heard several Ticos use it before and because recently someone took the time to teach me that campanario means church steeple (where they often live)
and I like knowing that tidbit of information
this is a debate that I’ve never gotten a solid answer on
They both seemed to be used willy-nilly on all species of owls in Costa Rica depending on who you talk to
The trend at the wildlife center that I used to work at was that people seemed to use lechuza for smaller species of owl and buho for larger species
You hardly ever get to see them and when you do
there’s something about the eyes that makes it look like they don’t like you when they look at you
They’re the grumpy old men of the bird world
They’re actually in the Guiness Book of World Records for owls with the largest distribution
They’re found throughout most of the world
The only continent where they are entirely absent is Antarctica
they’re found throughout almost all of the country except for very high altitudes
They’re not wild about thick forest and are often found in more open country like agricultural areas
though you can sometimes spot them in the evening or early morning
They eat a variety of creatures including bats
but more often than not they dine on rodents
they are able to soundlessly swoop down on it because the feathers on their wings have structures that reduce turbulence
Barn owls are one of the rare species that I’ve actually had more real-life interactions with than camera trap records
I’ve seen them a few times while checking cameras in the forest and while driving to camera trap sites when I leave early enough in the morning that it’s still dark
I hand-raised a few groups of juveniles at the rehabilitation and release center where I used to work
park rangers at a national park in Guanacaste showed me a nest full of large juveniles in the roof of a lookout tower used to spot wildfires
it’s such a good spot for a nest that the local male and female have been using it for years
I’ll include a cellphone video of the disapproving-looking juveniles in the video below
I have recorded a few barn owls with my camera traps
most of which came from a camera surveilling a jabiru nest
a barn owl landed on a branch above a pond at a local project here in Guanacaste and stared directly at the camera
The video was so good that I had to write an article just as an excuse to share it with you
