2024 (MLN): The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has imposed a Rs75 million penalty on two manufacturers of frozen desserts
Unilever Pakistan and Friesland Campina Engro
for misleading consumers by advertising their products as “ice cream.”
This action follows a complaint by Pakistan Fruit Juice Company (Private) Limited
who alleged deceptive marketing tactics through TV ads and social media campaigns
CCP issued show-cause notices to both companies
manufacturers of “Walls” and “Omore” frozen desserts
for violating advertising standards and misleading consumers
Saeed Ahmed Nawaz conducted these hearings
The bench while imposing the penalty in its order
inter-alia referred to the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) PS 969-2010 and the Punjab Pure Food Regulations 2018
which define “frozen dessert” and “ice cream” as two distinct products
while “frozen desserts” are prepared from a pasteurized mix consisting of a combination of milk
a penalty of Rs20 million was also imposed on Unilever Pakistan for conducting and disseminating false comparisons of their products as healthier to the dairy ice cream in its advertisements
which constitutes a violation of Section 10(2)(c) of the Competition Act
The order has also referenced international jurisdictions
wherein food quality standards authorities have specified the term “ice cream” exclusively for dairy-based products
the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in USA had also penalized an undertaking for marketing and misbranding its frozen dessert products by labeling them as “ice cream.”
CCP in the order has also directed the undertakings to desist from presenting frozen desserts as ice cream in their advertisements
as it leads to the distribution of false and misleading information to the consumers
prohibited under section 10 of the Competition Act
Both companies are thus required to remove such advertisements from digital platforms also and make adequate disclosure about their products
A compliance report in this regard is to be submitted to the CCP within 30 days of the Order
CCP under the law is mandated to ensure open competition in all spheres of commercial and economic activities and to protect consumers from any anticompetitive behaviours
including any deceptive marketing practices

FrieslandCampina WAMCO has launched its Zero Waste Initiative aimed at promoting sustainable environmental practices in Nigeria
The two-phase initiative begins with efforts to reduce post-production waste sent to landfills
followed by a focus on recovering post-consumer waste

Sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) cause fouling
corrosion and produce H2S during oil and gas production
Produced water obtained from Periquito (PQO) and Galo de Campina (GC) onshore oilfields in Brazil was investigated for SRB
Postgate C and Baars media was incubated anaerobically for 20 days
16S rDNA PCR amplified and fragments were sequenced using Illumina TruSeq
4.2 million sequence reads were analysed and deposited at NCBI SAR accession number SRP149784
No significant differences in microbial community composition could be attributed to the different media but significant differences in the SRB were observed between the two oil fields
The dominant bacterial orders detected from both oilfields were Desulfovibrionales
The genus Pseudomonas was found predominantly in the GC oilfield and Pleomorphominas and Shewanella were features of the PQO oilfield
11% and 7.6% of the sequences at GC and PQO were not classified at the genus level but could be partially identified at the order level
Relative abundances changed for Desulfovibrio from 29.8% at PQO to 16.1% at GC
Clostridium varied from 2.8% at PQO and 2.4% at GC
These data provide the first description of SRB from onshore produced water in Brazil and reinforce the importance of Desulfovibrionales
and Enterobacteriales in produced water globally
Identifying potentially harmful microbes is an important first step in developing microbial solutions that prevent their proliferation
and multifactorial regulation mechanisms of glutaraldehyde resistance
Accurate knowledge of the microorganisms present in an oil field and its produced water is critical for selecting and monitoring the action of antimicrobial substances
It is also critical in order to establish the required/optimum amount of biocide
It is necessary to stop biofilms at an early stage of establishment because treating them subsequently is much more challenging
we used Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) methods to study produced water that had been enriched for SRB from two Brazilian oilfields: Galo de Campina and Periquito
Very little was known about the microbiology of these wells
These studies are rare in Brazil despite the country's important role in the oil industry
Molecular biology and NGS methods were used to investigate samples and to establish a diversity benchmark as well as identifying potential biomarkers for the oilfields studied

10 ml of media plus 1 ml of produced water samples was injected into a vial and purged with nitrogen free oxygen gas for 2-min
before being clamped with a rubber and aluminium cap
The sealed tubes were stored for 20 days at 30° C under anaerobiosis
using anaerobic atmosphere generation bags and Gaspak jars (Merck Ltd).The anaerobic system contains a palladium catalyst and an indicator of anaerobiosis (methylene blue)
The culture media contains the oxidation–reduction indicator resazurin
and an envelope containing sodium borohydride and sodium bicarbonate (Merck Ltd)
For each oil field nine sub samples were investigated
3 of each type of medium for each oilfield
bacteria from the 18 samples were collected by centrifugation for DNA extraction
Tubes under the same conditions containing just the medium without produced water provided the negative control
chimeric sequences were removed from further analyses
The remaining sequences were then classified using classify.seqs command
with RDP database as reference and a bootstrap cut-off of 80
and those not assigned to any kingdom were removed
No eukaria or archaea sequences were seen in the samples
were used as input for the construction of a distance matrix and for clustering the sequences into operational taxonomic units (OTUs)
The samples were then randomly normalized to the same number of sequences (n = 46,736) for biodiversity analyses
Then the taxonomy summary was used to identify the bacterial compositions of each sample
and the OTU distributions were used to calculate the diversity indices (Chao and Shannon index)
PERMANOVA and MHGD analyses were performed using the functions vegdist()
adonis() and betadisper() from the vegan package
a total of 992 OTU´s were defined and compared
The number of OTUs (species richness/alpha diversity) varied between 95 and 150 at Campo de Galo and between 93 to 144 at Periquito
Chao and Shannon values were evaluated by Shapiro–Wilk for normality and homogeneity
the Student's t test was used for analysis of variance
Comparisons of the Chao (P = 0.69) and Shannon (P = 0.75) indices were made and there were no significant differences in biodiversity between the oil fields
there was no significant difference between the different culture media analyzed
Non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis (nMDS) of replicas from the Galo de Campina (red) and Periquieto (blue) oilfields (n = 9)
followed by the Firmicutes (Bacilli and Clostridia)
Despite the differences in geographical locations of oilfields and methods used to investigate them
it is interesting to note that these two phyla always dominate
This is perhaps not surprising if we consider that conditions within an oil reservoir will strongly select for specific groups of bacteria that can survive and evolve in such environments

their role is uncertain because they might not be actively producing H2S and simply present in a dormant sporulated form
A deeper analysis at the genus level was undertaken to evaluate if there were significant differences in the distribution of genera between the oilfields, results are shown in Fig. 4.

where it can be seen that there was a significant variation (BH adjusted p-value < 0.05) between the two fields analyzed
It is interesting to note that Clostridiales and Rhizobiales showed greater abundance in the Periquito field
while Pseudomonadales was more abundant in the Galo de Campina field
strains from this genus are involved in polymer degradation
DNA sequencing analysis of over 800 000sequences from the Galo de Campina and Periquito oil fields detected a dominant phylum
the Proteobacteria (93.8%) which was followed by the Firmicutes (6.2%)
These phyla are typically described in all global studies of reservoir and produced water bacterial biodiversity
The rDNA data in this study therefore supports previous findings based on isolation and direct DNA extraction studies
Clostridiales and Bacilliales belonging to the phylum Firmicutes
Alteromonadales and Rhizobiales that belong to the phylum Proteobacteria
Desulfovibrio and Clostridium were the dominant genera
and that bacteria from these genera are routinely isolated from samples of produced water
They are known to be involved in biofilm formation processes
production of hydrogen sulphide and corrosion of metallic structures
For these two onshore oil fields we now know which bacteria in the produced water responded to the experimental conditions and that could possibly respond to attempts to manage those bacteria
To address the challenge of SRB at these oilfields and elsewhere requires monitoring SRB communities and biocides that target specific SRB groups
Microbial communities are both the problem and a solution to corrosion and souring; to decreasing maintenance and operating costs as well as to minimising negative environmental impacts in Brazil and elsewhere
The next step is to target specific problematic strains and employ targeted biocides that are more efficient at eradicating them and are less toxic to the wider environment than chemical alternatives

van Rozendaal said that the company has introduced bioactive proteins to fulfil this need
This include lactoferrin and milk fat globule membrane (MFGM). The former has been studied for its immune health benefits.
The company has in fact commissioned a brand new lactoferrin factory in March, making it one of the top two players in the lactoferrin space. It also owns a state-of-the-art whey protein isolate and MFGM filtration plant to meet consumer demand.
Protein is also especially important for the ageing population and consumers who want to lead a healthier lifestyle.
“Protein enriched products for muscle mass maintenance and building are gaining traction.
“And it's growing for different needs, so for instance for muscle function like physical function, mobility, and performance sports, but you also see that it's important for resilience, for instance, immune system, recovery, and wound healing, and last but not least, also for the metabolic function,” he said.
In terms of metabolic function, protein, for instance, when taken with carbohydrates, could aid glucose control and insulin sensitivity.

Experts say the chances of beating the species are even lower now than they were 50 years ago
demographic shifts have multiplied the kinds of habitat where the mosquito thrives
and infrastructure development has not kept pace with population growth
Millions of people lack plumbing and store water in open containers that make ideal breeding sites
Even emptying or covering standing water cannot guarantee extermination of the mosquito
the country is in the midst of its most crippling recession in decades and a political crisis that has seen the president impeached and much of Congress and the new Cabinet mired in allegations of corruption
the federal government stopped shipping larvicide — a key weapon against mosquitoes -- to some of the places hardest hit by the Zika epidemic
who oversees mosquito abatement in Campina Grande
said the shortages lasted for months and became so acute that health workers started experimenting with alternatives such as using household bleach and small fish to kill insect larvae in water storage tanks and drainage canals

Critics complain that many of the government’s tactics against the mosquito — sending soldiers into neighborhoods to hand out leaflets about the virus
for instance — are more show than substance
a historian who has written about Brazil’s mosquito wars
said the government isn’t doing enough to address the poverty and poor sanitation that have long allowed mosquitoes to thrive in the northeast
Throughout the region’s vast urban slums and arid hinterlands
residents hoard water in rooftop tanks and other uncovered containers in a constant battle against unreliable water supplies
Many do not have access to the sewage system
“The government wasn’t worried about this 50 years ago
and the government is repeating the same mistake today,” Magalhaes said

Sure, I had run into pupuserías before in other corners of Dallas, but this place is special. It's a time machine to a childhood steeped in syrupy drinks, where memories smell of roasted tomatoes on a comal and taste like crunchy snacks and velvety beans.
I found La Campiña Salvadoreña along Davis Street by accident when I was heading back to the office after an interview. Even though there are more than 73,000 Salvadorans in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, it's not every day that I stumble across a pupusa, so I had to stop.
If you don't know what pupusas are, let me explain. They're thick tortillas made of corn or rice flour and filled with cheese and beans or pork. You let them sizzle over a comal or griddle and then tear them with your hands as the melted stuffing escapes.
They're cheap, filling and delicious. In short, I say they're God's gift to humanity.
I ordered my pupusas to-go and sat down to wait. Then I noticed the little store I was in.
I found the Chocomelher melting chocolate used in my childhood home to make frozen bananas. Also, the popular Diana brand snacks: the Alboroto caramel popcorn that I used buy in school, the Platanitos or plantain chips that my dad devoured during weekends at the beach and the Yuquitas or yucca chips that my parents send from El Salvador because they know my brother loves them.
I even spotted the spice mix or "relajo" that my mom uses to prepare turkey salsa, a recipe that gives our Christmas the aroma of roasted tomatoes and toasted pumpkin and sesame seeds, bay leaves, oregano and guajillo chile.
Also in stock, of course, is my beloved Kolashampan soda, an orange-colored concoction that is a staple at children's birthday parties. I still don't know what flavor it's supposed to be.
Here, at La Campiña, refried beans are frijoles colochos. They're red silk beans, not pinto or black beans. The curtido — our version of coleslaw that accompanies pupusas — is made with traditional pineapple vinegar.
The fried plantains, served with beans and cream, are so tender and sweet that one of my colleagues thought they were bananas.
When we move far from home, sometimes we fall back on substitutes to conjure a favorite dish. But Iris Chicas, owner of La Campiña, said she's devoted to authentic flavors, imported from El Salvador.
She is a niece of one of the owners of Gloria's, the fancy chain of Tex-Mex restaurants that has given Dallas a taste of Salvadoran cuisine. But La Campiña — which also has locations in Arlington and North Dallas — is closer to the El Salvador I know, where you eat pupusas with a hand wrapped around a Coca-Cola, not a guava margarita.
Here your meal is served in a simple dining area with walls the color of mango. Flat TV screens play Mexican telenovelas, a detail faithful to Salvadoran daily life and as predictable as the fact that the star-crossed lovers stay together in the end.
Oak Cliff has thieves, too, and La Campiña has been burglarized a few times. That's why the bars are there. But things have gotten better in recent years, Chicas said. She points to the rebirth of the Bishop Arts District. It's been good for her business.
But you don't have to go to a fine restaurant to enjoy a feast around here. I ate like a queen in the home I left behind, and La Campiña brings it back to me in little pieces. Nothing tastes better than a good memory.
Campina Grasboter was voted the biggest liar when it came to using milk from cows that spend their entire lives indoors
