The professorship offers recognition for outstanding early accomplishments and provides financial support to encourage promising young faculty members to establish a commitment to teaching and exploring new areas of research
Carmona is a particle astrophysicist who studies dark matter
an invisible substance estimated to makes up approximately 85 percent of the matter of the universe and
shapes the form and movement of galaxies and contributes to the universe’s large-scale structure
Direct detection of dark matter has eluded scientists since its existence was first suggested in 1933
and the quest to find out what dark matter is made of is considered one of the most pressing questions in physics
Carmona helped to build and is a key member of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment
the world’s most sensitive dark matter detector located in the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF)
a former gold mine nearly one mile underground in Lead
LZ is more than 100 times more sensitive than its predecessor
the Large Underground Xenon (LUX) experiment
She is also working on the design of the cryogenics system and detector for LZ-XENON/DARWIN (XLZD)
a future next-generation xenon-based detector
“Carmen is a very successfully experimentalist and made significant contributions to the hardware
and commissioning of both LZ and LUX,” said Mauricio Terrones
Downsbrough Head of the Department of Physics at Penn State
“She has also served on the executive committee or board for both collaborations
which collectively govern more than 250 researchers
In addition to her scientific contributions
she is an excellent mentor to her graduate and undergraduate students and is an active member of the Department of Physics
We are proud to recognize her many achievements with this professorship."
Carmona is an expert on detector hardware and operations
she is leveraging her experience and expertise in developing dark matter experiments to pursue research and development that pushes the sensitivity of detectors beyond what current technology allows
In recognition of her research accomplishments
Prior to joining the faculty at Penn State
Carmona was an assistant project scientist from 2014 to 2017 and a postdoctoral research associate from 2013 to 2014 at the University of California
Carmona was a postdoctoral research associate at Case Western University from 2009 to 2013
She earned a doctoral degree in physics in 2009
a master’s degree in physics and mathematics in 2006
and a bachelor’s degree in physics in 2004 at the University of Granada

(WWSB) - A 20-year-old undocumented alien from Mexico has been arrested for sexually battering a 13-year-old in Charlotte County
the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office said
Samuel Cobos Carmona is accused of entering the back yard of the victim’s home
where the victim and his younger brother were playing hide-and seek
According to sworn statements from the boy’s parents
the brothers were playing behind the family’s apartment at about 9:30 p.m
when a man entered the yard and began playing with them
According to these statements in a heavily redacted probable cause affidavit
the man asked the boy if he wanted to touch him
held him down and pulled down the boy’s pants
The man covered the boy’s mouth to muffle screams and sexually assaulted him
the boy lay still until his younger brother found him
The victim was afraid to tell anyone about the assault until about a week later
when he told the mother of one of his friends
That woman convinced the boy to tell his parents about the attack
the victim was referred to the Child Advocacy Center for a medical examination
The victim’s father suggested Carmona as a possible suspect
said he had been playing hide-and-seek with the children that night but denied any sexual misconduct
Carmona was arrested and charged with lewd or lascivious battery by engaging in sexual activity with a person 12 years of age or older but less than 16
He is being held in the Charlotte County Jail
The Department of Homeland Security also issued a warrant for Carmona’s arrest for being in the country illegally
stresses the importance of global collaboration in cancer research to enhance understanding and treatment across diverse populations
In an interview with The American Journal of Managed Care® at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting 2025 in Chicago
professor at the UC Davis School of Medicine
emphasizes the importance of international collaboration in expanding global cancer research
Carvajal-Carmona will further explore this topic on Tuesday during the session
"Advancing Cancer Research in Understudied Populations by Engaging With Local and Global Communities," in his presentation
"How Can Global Health Research Help Us Advance Fighting Cancer for Everyone?"
This transcript has been lightly edited; captions were auto-generated
why is global health research so important when it comes to advancing cancer research and care
We live in an interconnected world and an increasingly diverse society
we can advance the understanding of the disease
There are many examples in which discoveries in developing countries are helping people here in America
which areas of cancer research are currently the most well-established or advanced
I will say the areas of infectious-related cancers
cancers that are caused by infection; I would say that is an area where more progress has been made
We have learned a lot about cervical cancer
and stomach cancer by studying people in other countries
what areas are still underdeveloped and in need of greater attention
I think there are a lot of new environmental exposures
that we don't know how they are causing cancer
I think there is a lot of work needed on that
on understanding cancer etiology caused by new agents
most cancer cases are now happening in developing countries
there are some ideas about westernization and the adoption of the Western lifestyle
but there are other elements that we still need to understand
which populations worldwide remain underrepresented in cancer research
we know very little about cancer in Africa; Southeast Asia
If we understand more about cancer in this population
but it also will help everyone because cancer is a disease that affects everyone
What strategies or efforts can help expand global cancer research and improve the representation of diverse populations within it
It's difficult to do cancer research because funding is lower
I think it's important to help scientists and clinicians in developing countries support their own research
Capacity building in terms of training people in these countries will go a long way because they could start doing research locally
I will say it's important to have collaborations that are equitable
If we are collaborating with clinicians and scientists in developing countries to study cancer
Can you elaborate on the role international collaboration plays in advancing cancer research
How can it be strengthened to better benefit diverse populations worldwide
I think we still need to know a lot about cancer
If we only study cancer in North America and in Europe
it will take us longer to beat the disease
If we expand our horizons and we look at cancer patients and families in other places of the world
we will understand more about how this disease develops
and we will be able to develop ways to prevent it and treat it
It is important for us to increase these collaborations and to study other populations
The United States plays an outside role in funding cancer research on the planet
What is important for us in the collaborations is to establish that there is a component of training that knowledge
we come up with strategies that people in these countries can use to start to develop their own studies and research
and they get the credit for the important findings that we are obtaining from these collaborations
what are currently the most exciting or promising areas of global cancer research
I think anything that has to do with vaccines for cancer prevention is exciting
the use of genomics to understand cancer etiology
We know there are unique lifestyle and environmental exposures in some countries
people are using genomics to really understand
what are the consequences of being exposed to unique carcinogens

A tight race to fill the vacant District 2 seat on the Peoria City Council has drawn to a close
half the people voted for her,” said Carmona
“Now it's my duty to show the people who voted for her and me that I was the right decision.”
Carmona finishes less than two percentage points ahead of Diaz (50.8%-49.2%)
with the PCEC reporting voter turnout of around 24%
Carmona ran his campaign with a strong focus on business growth and development. In interviews with WCBU
he emphasized his support for a “hands off” government approach to business
Carmona says listening to constituents is a key priority for the position
and I’m meeting them and hearing their concerns,” he said
Diaz says while she admits the race for the seat is more than likely over
but I think I still would like a little bit of transparency
and just to give that to the voters as well,” she said
Diaz says she plans to run for office again and will take the lessons learned from this first campaign into any future races
One of those lessons is including a wider range of issues in her platform
you don't realize how many issues that the city has,” said Diaz
I started to just uncover more and more and more.”
Diaz hopes her first campaign will be generally encouraging for more people to attempt a run for political office
if there's someone like me who is the working class person who just really has the heart and the ambition to run and the courage
Diaz argues that working class candidates can feel stretched thin by the demands of campaigning
but those interested shouldn’t let financial barriers stop them from building a run for office
Both candidates have commended the other throughout the campaign for running a clean
they both emphasize the importance of authenticity to their political aspirations
“I'm not going to change who I am because I'm in this position,” said Carmona
“I'm going to continue to be basically a regular person who believes in Peoria
and that is there to talk to people and try to help them.”
Diaz has been outspoken in the community on issues like advocating for a Palestine ceasefire and other progressive causes
She believes the close race demonstrates an appetite for progressive politics in the district
“In the sense of it being a shift in people like we saw now,” she said
“I definitely think that this is what people are wanting in regards to just
not holding back anymore and not being afraid to take certain stances.”
Carmona will be sworn in during a special Peoria City Council meeting on May 6

Peoria will get a new city councilperson for its prominent 2nd District
Local artist Alex Carmona and Caterpillar employee Estrella Diaz have been locked in a close race to see who will replace longtime city councilman Chuck Grayeb in the 2nd District
Carmona has 1,360 votes to 1,287 for Diaz as of 9:24 p.m
Tuesday night with 100% of precincts reporting
Carmona grabbed slightly more early votes than Diaz
but Diaz held an early advantage in mail-in ballots
The two were separated by just 20 votes in February's primary election
Tuesday night's general election showed them separated by just 73 votes
Some mail-in ballots will likely be counted in the coming days
Carmona told the Journal Star on Tuesday night that he was not quite ready to declare victory given the narrow margin separating to two
but he was "cautiously optimistic" that things have gone his way in the election
was not ready to declare a defeat Tuesday night
telling the Journal Star her campaign was going to "hold on to hope" in the coming days as more mail-in ballots were tabulated
but overall tonight has been amazing just because my whole thing has been what the people feel is best and so even though personally it does kind of suck but that's just the ego speaking
I am happy with how things went," Diaz said
said she may run again in future elections if this one does not play out in her favor
"You don't win battles but you don't always lose them," Diaz said
"I am going to just keep holding onto hope
but I am just very glad that I took the risk
Carmona and I am really happy overall to have been on this journey and have had this experience."
Peoria County allows for mail-in ballots to be counted after election day as long as they were postmarked on or before election day
In-person voting tabulated early Tuesday also shows Carmona holding a narrow advantage of 652 votes to 605 for Diaz
Diaz and Carmona were separated by just 20 votes in the Feb
was eliminated after securing 678 votes in the primary
Wresinski has since endorsed Carmona for the 2nd District in a Facebook post
Diaz centered her campaign on a message that she will listen to the needs of the people of the 2nd District
saying in a Facebook post her campaign is "for everyone who’s ever been left behind
For those who’ve been silenced over and over again
Carmona's campaign focused on issues such as economic growth for Peoria and he has said he would like to reduce "red tape" that encumbers business growth in the city

Playing college football in the SEC – including at Arkansas – is no longer about pride
Maybe it has been for longer than anyone cares to admit
After beating his former team on Saturday, Tennessee transfer Doneiko Slaughter was asked what the win meant. He responded: “I see it as another great opportunity to feed my family
Athletes are playing the hand they’re dealt in the Transfer Portal/NIL era
staying invested in a team when players are shuffled in and out every season is a different experience than we’re accustomed to
it’s not as much fun to root for guys on the Hill who are there to collect a paycheck
it’s hard to imagine two unranked SEC teams like Arkansas and Vandy knocking off the likes of No
1 Alabama on the same day prior to the NIL era
the thing fans care most about is winning.
despite a defensive domination in the first half against Tennessee
anticipating a new way for the Hogs to rip out our hearts
There is perhaps no team in the country as adept at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory as Arkansas football
scoring a late touchdown to win 19-14 and earn some top-25 votes in the process
the game could have easily gone the other way.
Four of the next six games are against ranked SEC opponents
I don’t think anybody has a clue what to expect
yet somehow have never seemed more winnable.
And the notion of “Team” has never seemed more ephemeral
and he’s shown the same explosiveness for the Razorbacks
it would be nice to see him develop as a passer and lead the Hogs as a senior.
the next starting quarterback could arrive this offseason
he could leave the following season.
“It’s kind of been known as NI-Hell,” Pittman said in August.
There doesn’t seem to be many football coaches enjoying the NIL/Transfer Portal era. According to research by 247Sports
more college football coaches are making the jump to the NFL than ever before
Thirty-four coaches left for NFL positions last year
marking an 88.9 percent increase over the past two years and continuing a rising trend for the second consecutive season
after beating the Vols and improving to 4-2
the NIL era seems to be a net positive for the Hogs.
That’s because football programs like Arkansas – thanks to a few wealthy donors – have a fair amount of NIL cash to spend relative to the program’s recent success
Private donors and the players they pay often have zero obligation to report those numbers
whereas the Hogs are likely in the neighborhood of $5 million
according to Pig Trail Nation’s Mike Irwin
Before redshirt junior Fernando Carmona transferred from San Jose State
he was essentially going door-to-door to collect NIL money
“I kind of had to personally go out and ask other businesses to give me money,” Carmona said recently on the Miss Understood Podcast. “Now I’m in Arkansas
The way it kind of works was that it was a set contract
The people have already donated the money to this big collective
and that collective distributes all the money out to the players
“In January they gave me a set contract that takes me all the way to December,” he explained
“And then after the season and after this year
they’ll renegotiate and then we’ll do it all again
that’s taken a little shine off college football
“Every year I feel like I’m watching a different team,” Redditor u/plasticmanufacturing commented
“No consistency makes it feel like I’m not watching the Razorbacks
but just random players with Razorback skins … It could have been done such that players get paid without that feeling of perpetual free-agentism.”
And that seems to be common knowledge among players
“I don’t think anybody gives a shit anymore,” Carmona said when asked about loyalty to a coach or a team
“I came into college football in a golden era where there’s not really many rules in place for this NIL
I love Arkansas and it’s not really about the money
it’s about my performance and where I’m at.”
To be clear, there are plenty of players in this and previous portal classes that do appear to really care, including Carmona, who has twice been named SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week so far in 2024
But his comments give a little insight into the reality of players navigating NIL
the transfer portal and traditional notions of team
The window for making money as a football player is very short
KJ Jefferson, for instance, is estimated to make more than $400k in NIL at Central Florida. But his stock isn’t looking great even on this current UCF roster after getting benched on Saturday
For every Shadeur Sanders or Arch Manning that enjoy multi-million dollar NIL deals and red carpet walks to the NFL
there are hundreds of players at or below the bubble trying to maximize their earnings now
What we really care about is those players playing their asses off while they’re here.
emerged as arguably the best player of the Pittman era
The Hogs also brought in major contributors like Jadon Haselwood
the length of a player’s tenure within a program doesn’t have much to do with how hard they play
In his final season as a Razorback, Jefferson seemed to lose the spark that had propelled the team in the previous two seasons
It’s easy to wonder if he was eyeing greener pastures.
It’s anybody’s guess about how long NIL and the transfer portal will remain as it is, but one thing is for sure – change is coming
The future of NIL and college athletics is as unpredictable as the bounce of a football.
NIL seems to have leveled the playing field between the top programs and the rest of the teams in their conferences
the product on the field will determine how we feel about this era of college football
If the Hogs are competitive and the players play hard

both misdemeanors with possible one-year jail sentences as well as fines
Cordero-Carmona is also charged with a reckless operation violation for allegedly fleeing from officers attempting to take him into custody
Alleged fentanyl dealer target of a month-long investigationAccording to Walker
undercover personnel allegedly purchased illegal fentanyl from Cordero-Carmona during the month-long investigation
Officers obtained warrants for his arrest on Monday
Walker said Cordero-Carmona fled from officers attempting to stop him while he was driving his vehicle in Seabrook
where he was taken into custody by pursuing officers
Walker said the investigation is still ongoing
and law enforcement is currently in the process of executing search warrants to discover more evidence in this case
Walker said Seabrook police were assisted in this investigation by the U.S
Drug Enforcement Administration and the Seabrook Fire Department
Walker said Seabrook police will continue to pursue aggressively and charge those who come to Seabrook to sell fentanyl
“Those selling illicit drugs should know if they continue to enter Seabrook to conduct their transactions
the Seabrook police stand ready to identify and arrest them,” Walker said

The trafficking of illegal fentanyl has and is taking a fatal toll throughout the nation, the Granite State and Seabrook, becoming “a major contributor to fatal and nonfatal overdoses in the U.S.,” according to the Centers for Disease Control.
In Seabrook in 2024, Walker said, of the six drug overdoses police recorded, five related to the use of fentanyl, sometimes in combination with other drugs like heroin. And fentanyl was involved in the two overdose deaths Seabrook recorded in 2024, Walker said.
According to Walker, fentanyl is in the “top tier” of illegal drugs on the scene today, with cocaine and methamphetamine also showing a resurgence in the illicit drug trade, along with heroin. Walker said, according to his experience, fentanyl began taking its toll on the lives of those addicted to opioids as early as 2017 when he witnessed a spike in drug overdoses plaguing the community.
Originally produced legally by pharmaceutical companies and available only by prescription for use in surgery, in cases of severe pain and advanced-stage cancers, fentanyl is a synthetic – or lab-made – opioid. According to the CDC, fentanyl is considered 50 times more potent than the illegal opiate heroin, and 100 times more potent than morphine.
Fentanyl trafficked by drug cartels today is not pharmaceutical grade but concocted in illegal laboratories at a much lower cost than heroin.
Produced in powder, pill and even liquid form, according to the CDC, fentanyl looks like other drugs and prescription pills, and it’s commonly combined with other drugs like heroin or counterfeit prescription opiates. Many people may not even know the illegal drugs they’re purchasing contain fentanyl and are more potent.
According to the CDC, “Synthetic opioids like fentanyl contribute to nearly 70% of overdoses. Over the last few years, nonfatal and fatal overdoses involving fentanyl have continued to rise.”

has mounts at Santa Anita on Friday’s opening day card but will also ride at Canterbury Park through the end of the season
Carmona will have a busy week as he rides eight horses Wednesday and seven Thursday at Canterbury Park in Shakopee
where he is second in the jockey standings
before he heads west to ride two mounts at Santa Anita in Arcadia
Saturday he is back at Canterbury for closing day
riding each of the card’s nine races
Carmona intends to return to Santa Anita after that
to a place that was once home. While his name may be unfamiliar
it is not to many Southern California racetrackers
galloped horses at California tracks beginning in 2010 working for several trainers including John Sadler and Kristin Mulhall
“But I always felt in my heart that I could make it [as a jockey]
I never thought about my age.” He also knew that when the time came he would need to leave California
“I was known as a good hand but I also was considered to be an exercise rider
I wasn’t sure anyone would give me a chance.”
The Panamanian began his professional riding career on July 26
He went winless in 82 starts in 2023 racing in Minnesota and Louisiana.“It wasn’t easy not winning a single race last year and going to Fair Grounds with no wins,” he said. His first win came January 28 at Fair Grounds in New Orleans.“I’m so glad it happened the way it happened,” he said.He returned to Canterbury in May and rode six mounts opening night
winning with one for perennial leading trainer Mac Robertson.“I feel blessed,” Carmona said
“I’m grateful for Minnesota and for Mac
If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t have the success I’ve had.”Former jockey Chuck Costanza serves as Carmona’s agent
Costanza found plenty of business for his jockey at Canterbury but also booked Carmona to ride at Evangeline Downs
Louisiana Downs and Horseshoe Indianapolis throughout the summer on Canterbury’s dark days
With just three nights of racing remaining in the Canterbury season
Carmona trails Luis Fuentes by three wins for the riding title with 56 wins from 265 starts
He leads the colony in races ridden with earnings of $1,177,436
Equally effective on turf and dirt at Canterbury
Carmona has won with 20 percent of his grass mounts and 22 percent on the main track
Thirty-two of his 56 wins have been for Robertson
with a 49 percent rate riding the wagering favorite.Costanza surprised Carmona with a trip to Southern California earlier this month.“He’d already bought the plane tickets and said we were going and he wanted to see Santa Anita,” said Carmona who looked forward to the opportunity to see family and visit the racetrack
“They knew that I was winning races
It makes you feel really good.” That visit and the reception Carmona received led the agent and rider to the decision to make Santa Anita their destination when Canterbury concluded. That homecoming begins Friday when Carmona will ride the third and eighth races
and the debates surrounding trainer Bob Baffert

he was the kind of dad who taught his sons how to play golf and baseball and never missed a single game
He taught his sons all of the most important things in life: Baseball
a love of the outdoors and how to be good men.
He was master of the grill who made a mean BBQ.
Mario never met a stranger who didn’t become a friend
He made time in his busy life to lend an ear and a hand to his many friends
Strangers benefited from his giving spirit
too — Mario loved to donate fishing and baseball equipment to kids
hoping to spark a passion in two of his favorite sports
