Haiti — A crowd of 500 descended from dusty trucks on a recent morning and shuffled through a tiny gap in a border gate separating Haiti from the Dominican Republic
some still clad in work clothes and others barefoot as they lined up for food
water and medical care in the Haitian border city of Belladère before mulling their next move
the migrants recounted what they said were mounting abuses by Dominican officials after President Luis Abinader ordered them in October to start deporting at least 10,000 immigrants a week under a harsh new policy widely criticized by civil organizations
"They broke down my door at 4 in the morning," said Odelyn St
who had worked as a mason in the Dominican Republic for two decades
He had been sleeping next to his wife and 7-year-old son
The number of alleged human rights violations ranging from unauthorized home raids to racial profiling to deporting breastfeeding mothers and unaccompanied minors is surging as officials ramp up deportations to Haiti
which shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic
More than a quarter million people were deported last year
"The situation has reached a critical point," said Roudy Joseph
an activist who accused officials of ignoring due process during arrests
dozens of vendors lined up on either side of the men
women and unaccompanied children who marched single file into Belladère after being deported
garbage-strewn trail that smelled of urine
SIM cards and illegal trips back to the Dominican Republic: "Would you like to pass through
I'll wait for you on the other side," they whispered in Creole
That afternoon marked the second time Jimmy Milien
in 2024 and again in mid-January when authorities boarded a public bus and pointed at him
get off," he recalled them saying before they even asked for documents
and doesn't know when he'll see them again
He was planning to travel to Haiti's capital
but like thousands of others dropped off in Belladère
he would have to cross through gang territory where gunmen open fire on public transport
where more than 5,600 people were reported killed last year
the majority by gangs that control 85% of the capital
If Milien were to return a third time to the Dominican Republic
a Haitian who only gave his first name to speak freely about smuggling
said he ferries migrants across the border up to six times a week
and then offers $8 to Dominican border guards: "If you pay them
He lived almost three years in Santo Domingo
He then joined a thriving smuggling operation and said he doesn't plan on returning to the capital until the crackdown eases
Military checkpoints dot the road leading out of the dusty border to the Dominican capital
stick their heads into car windows and detain suspected undocumented migrants
but many jump out before a checkpoint and hop on again further down the road
The influx of Haitian migrants and their attempts to re-enter illegally is something that vexes Vice Admiral Luis Rafael Lee Ballester
"The Dominican Republic…has taken too much responsibility for the situation in Haiti," he said
but it's important that Haiti's leaders instill order in their country
Dominican officials argue that Haitian immigrants have overburdened the country's public services
with more than 80,000 new Haitian students enrolled in public schools in the past four years
Health officials say Haitian women account for up to 70% of births in the country
costing the government millions of dollars
Ballester said he will deploy additional migration officials across the country to tackle what he described as a surge in undocumented immigrants
saying they're a burden and a danger to his country
he acknowledged officials are allowed to enter homes "during a hot pursuit" and that personnel are being retrained "because our commitment to respecting human rights is unquestionable."
Ballester said the Dominican Republic does not deport unaccompanied minors and that officials now separate women and children from men during deportations
five teenagers without their parents were deported
who said he was detained while working in a field
He and the four others were interviewed by Haitian officials in Belladère who were trying to track down their parents
a 10-year-old unaccompanied girl was deported in late January
"These children are amongst the most vulnerable," she said
noting that gangs along the border prey on them
the Dominican Republic deported 1,099 unaccompanied children; 786 of them were reunited with their families
when he was recently deported alone to Haiti
she said she rushed to the Dominican detention center where he was being held but was told the government doesn't deport unaccompanied minors
Jean paid a smuggler to bring her son back to the Dominican Republic days later
"Children who are born here have no idea where to go," she said of those deported to Haiti
were born in the Dominican Republic but lack birth certificates or other official documentation proving their legal status
with activists accusing the government of allowing work permits to expire or refusing to process their paperwork
The Dominican Republic does not automatically bestow citizenship to everyone born there
Dominican employers in the agriculture and construction industries are complaining
At least one cell phone was recording when Mikelson Germain
tried to evade Dominican authorities late last year
He was running on a roof when an official caught him and pushed him off it
The woman recording shrieked and started crying
I fell on an electrical wire first," Germain said in a video taped by a nonprofit organization
With his leg injured and his cousin's children holding on to him
Activists accused the official of attempted murder
outraged at what they said was the treatment and arrests of their Haitian neighbors
One man tried to disarm a migration official before shots were fired and everyone scattered
President Abinader warned Haiti's situation is a danger to the region and that there could be an "uncontrollable wave of migration" as he called for more support for a U.N.-backed mission in Haiti struggling to fight gangs
"There is no Dominican solution to the Haitian crisis," he said
"Haiti is drowning while an important part of the international community watches passively from the shore."

Near Carrizal de Bravo in the Sierra of Guerrero
a cave known as Tlayócoc has revealed an archaeological treasure that could rewrite part of Mexico’s pre-Hispanic history
made in the fall of 2023 by a local guide and a Russian speleologist
has sparked the interest of experts from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH)
who confirmed the significance of the objects found: engraved shell bracelets
and other artifacts that were likely deposited as offerings more than 500 years ago
a young guide from the community of Carrizal de Bravo
accompanied speleologist Yekaterina Katiya Pavlova to explore the Tlayócoc cave
as part of a mapping project the researcher is conducting in the region
they decided to go deeper into a submerged passage that led them to a hidden chamber
What they found left them speechless: two finely engraved shell bracelets
and several black stone discs — similar to pyrite mirrors — some whole and others fragmented
It was like stepping into a place frozen in time
They immediately alerted the ejido’s surveillance committee
who safeguarded the objects to prevent looting
a team of INAH specialists arrived in Carrizal de Bravo to inspect the site
Archaeologists Cuauhtémoc Reyes Álvarez and Miguel Pérez Negrete
along with historian Guillermina Valente Ramírez
documented the discovery with the help of photographs and maps provided by Pavlova
they discovered that the stalagmites had been modified in pre-Hispanic times to give them a more spherical shape
bringing the total to 14 registered archaeological pieces
made from marine shells (possibly from the species Triplofusus giganteus)
are decorated with S-shaped symbols — known as xonecuilli — zigzag lines
these motifs could be linked to deities or cosmogonic concepts related to creation and fertility
show similarities to artifacts found in other archaeological zones in Guerrero
and even with distant cultures like the Huastec
This sealed context allows us to understand how the ancient inhabitants conceived of these caves as portals to the underworld or as sacred spaces connected to the earth and the divine
Evidence suggests the objects were placed during the Postclassic period (950–1521 AD)
a time when the region was inhabited by the tlacotepehuas
an extinct ethnic group about which very little is known
Sixteenth-century historical sources mention their presence in the area
but this discovery could provide new data on their ritual practices and trade connections
is a Nahua-origin community whose ancestors were nomadic shepherds before settling in the region
The institute plans to implement an awareness campaign to preserve the biocultural heritage of the area
in addition to launching conservation studies for the pieces found
which remain under the custody of local authorities

With assets located in a historic copper mining district in Chile that boasts high-grade mineralization and low-cost operations
Red Metal Resources represents a compelling investment opportunity and lots of potential for increasing shareholder value
Chile is the largest producer of copper worldwide
accounting for nearly 28 percent of the global supply
Given the country’s favorable mining policies
Red Metal Resources is well-placed to leverage these advantages as it advances its projects in this prolific region
The company's Carrizal property comprises two key project areas: the Farellon project in the south and the Perth project in the north
The renowned Carrizal Alto mining district has a rich history of copper and gold production dating back to the 19th century
the district was one of Chile’s most productive copper regions
situated within Chile’s prolific Coastal Cordillera belt
which boasts high-grade copper mineralization and low-elevation
Red Metal Resources is working to rejuvenate Carrizal’s legacy by bringing modern exploration techniques to the region’s underexplored deposits
Red Metal Resources entered into a letter of intent (LOI) to acquire a 100 percent interest in three separate packages of mineral claims directly contiguous to Quebec Innovative Materials' recent hydrogen sample discovery of over 1,000 ppm
located within the Timiskaming Graben formation
covering 19 cells and totaling over 1,100 hectares to the North
Northeast and Southwest of QIMC's Hydrogen sample discoveries
The company intends to begin initial exploration and field work that could include:
Red Metal Resources’ management team brings together a blend of technical and business expertise
driving the company toward its goal of contributing to the growing global demand for copper and clean energy transition
The company also benefits from a board of directors and advisors with substantial experience in capital markets
This combination of technical expertise and business acumen is critical for Red Metal Resources as it seeks to advance its projects from exploration to potential production
The district's mining history dates back to the early 19th century when it became one of the most important copper production regions in Chile
One of the key advantages of the Carrizal Alto district is its favorable geographic position
The area is located at a low elevation of around 500 meters above sea level
which reduces the logistical challenges often associated with exploration in higher-altitude regions
the district is well-connected by infrastructure
The property is situated just 150 kilometers south of Copiapó
The Carrizal Alto district offers a blend of historical mining data and modern exploration potential
While the region was heavily mined in the 19th and early 20th centuries
much of the area remains underexplored using modern methods
thanks in part to Red Metal Resources’ exploration efforts
The company’s Carrizal property spans 3,278 hectares
and comprises two projects: Farellon and Perth
The Farellon project is Red Metal Resources’ flagship asset
located in the southern portion of the Carrizal Alto mining district
The project is a high-grade iron-oxide-copper-gold vein deposit that has been the focus of much of the company’s exploration activities
The mineralization at Farellon is primarily hosted in quartz-calcite veins that contain chalcopyrite
bornite and chalcocite sulphide mineralization
These veins range from 3 to 6 meters in width
with a halo of lower-grade mineralization extending 15 to 20 meters around the veins
Farellon is located adjacent to the historic Carrizal Alto mine
one of Chile’s most prolific copper mines during the 19th century
The mineralized veins on the Farellon property are believed to be part of the same geological structure that hosted the mineralization at the Carrizal Alto mine
Historical mining in the area provides valuable insights into the region’s geology
which Red Metal Resources is leveraging to guide its exploration strategy
the company has completed over 9,000 meters of drilling at Farellon
identifying a mineralized strike length of approximately 1.5 kilometers
The mineralization remains open along strike for an additional 3.5 kilometers
the company completed a 2,010-meter diamond drilling program that extended the known mineralization at depth and identified a parallel structure
located in the northern portion of the Carrizal Alto district
is Red Metal Resources’ second major exploration asset
The project holds considerable potential for copper-gold-cobalt mineralization
Perth is characterized by fault-related quartz veins that have been mapped and sampled across the property
Historical prospecting and mapping programs have identified 12 veins
with an average thickness of 2 meters and some zones reaching up to 6 meters in width
Exploration at Perth has yielded promising results
with 48 surface samples returning gold values greater than 1 g/t
46 samples returning copper grades exceeding 1 percent
and 19 samples showing cobalt values above 0.05 percent
These early-stage exploration results are encouraging and suggest that the Perth project has the potential to host significant copper-gold-cobalt mineralization

Empire Metals Limited (LON:EEE)(OTCQB:EPMLF)
the AIM-listed and OTCQB-traded resource exploration and development company
is pleased to inform investors of its upcoming participation in two key industry events:
These events provide an opportunity for the Company to update shareholders and potential investors on recent developments and strategic plans
including highlights from the ongoing exploration and development activities at the Pitfield Project and other key announcements made in recent weeks
An updated corporate presentation, reflecting the Company's latest developments, is available on the Company's website at: https://www.empiremetals.com/investors/shareholder-documents/presentations/
For further information please visit www.empiremetals.co.uk or contact:
Empire Metals is an AIM-listed and OTCQB-traded exploration and resource development company (LON:EEE)(OTCQB:EPMLF) with a primary focus on developing Pitfield
an emerging giant titanium project in Western Australia
The high-grade titanium discovery at Pitfield is of unprecedented scale
with airborne surveys identifying a massive
coincident gravity and magnetics anomaly extending over 40km by 8km by 5km deep
Drill results have indicated excellent continuity in grades and consistency of the mineralised beds and confirm that the sandstone beds hold the higher-grade titanium dioxide (TiO₂) values within the interbedded succession of sandstones
The Company is focused on two key prospects (Cosgrove and Thomas)
which have been identified as having thick
An Exploration Target* for Pitfield was declared in 2024
covering the Thomas and Cosgrove mineral prospects
and was estimated to contain between 26.4 to 32.2 billion tonnes with a grade range of 4.5 to 5.5% TiO2
Included within the total Exploration Target* is a subset that covers the weathered sandstone zone
which extends from surface to an average vertical depth of 30m to 40m and is estimated to contain between 4.0 to 4.9 billion tonnes with a grade range of 4.8 to 5.9% TiO2
The Exploration Target* covers an area less than 20% of the overall mineral system at Pitfield which demonstrates the potential for significant further upside
Empire is now accelerating the economic development of Pitfield
with a vision to produce a high-value titanium metal or pigment quality product at Pitfield
to realise the full value potential of this exceptional deposit
The Company also has two further exploration projects in Australia; the Eclipse Project and the Walton Project in Western Australia
in addition to three precious metals projects located in a historically high-grade gold producing region of Austria
*The potential quantity and grade of the Exploration Target is conceptual in nature
There has been insufficient exploration to estimate a Mineral Resource and it is uncertain if further exploration will result in the estimation of a Mineral Resource

Empire Metals (OTCQB:EPMLF, AIM:EEE) is unlocking one of the world’s largest and purest titanium deposits at its flagship Pitfield project in Western Australia. With growing global demand, a looming supply deficit, and near-term development milestones, Empire offers a compelling investment opportunity in the critical minerals space
Empire Metals (OTCQB:EPMLF, AIM:EEE) is an Australian focused exploration and resource development company rapidly gaining international attention for its discovery and rapid development of what is believed to be the world’s largest titanium deposit
The company is focused on advancing its flagship asset
With a dominant landholding of more than 1,000 sq km
and a titanium mineral system that spans 40 km in strike length
Pitfield is emerging as a district-scale “giant” discovery with the potential to reshape the global titanium supply landscape
Titanium has been designated as a critical mineral in both the EU and the US
With more than 22,000 meters of drilling already completed and only a fraction of the mineral system tested
Empire is aggressively advancing Pitfield towards a maiden JORC-compliant mineral resource estimate
the company is also undertaking bulk sampling and metallurgical processing to advance flowsheet design and optimize product specifications
It is also engaging with industry players to assess product suitability for premium pigment and titanium sponge markets

The company is supported by a seasoned leadership team with deep expertise in exploration
metallurgy and capital markets — ensuring that strategic decisions are guided by both technical excellence and a strong track record of value creation
the Pitfield project is Empire Metals’ flagship asset and represents one of the most exciting titanium discoveries globally
Spanning an area of approximately 1,042 sq km
the project has revealed a colossal mineral system measuring 40 km in length and up to 8 km in width
with geophysical indications of mineralization extending to at least a depth of 5 km
Pitfield’s prime location in Western Australia
Extensive drilling across the project has intercepted thick
laterally continuous zones of high-grade titanium dioxide mineralization
highlighting the system’s enormous scale and consistency
The titanium at Pitfield occurs predominantly in the minerals anatase and rutile within a weathered
often exceeding 90 percent titanium dioxide
They are free from harmful amounts of contaminants like uranium
chromium and phosphorus — qualities that are likely to make the deposit uniquely suitable for premium
high-purity titanium applications in aerospace
Pitfield is strategically located near the town of Three Springs

confirming standout titanium dioxide (TiO2) results such as 154 meters at 6.76 percent TiO2
mineralization remains open at depth in all tested zones
only around 5 percent of the interpreted system has been drilled
This underscores the immense upside potential for resource expansion
The Pitfield project presents a scalable processing pathway
Photo shows a gravity flotation test in process (left) and a close-up of a flotation test (right)
Pitfield is advancing toward a maiden JORC-compliant mineral resource estimate
The project is already being recognized as a potential cornerstone asset in the global titanium supply chain
Empire Metals maintains a portfolio of early-stage exploration assets offering optionality and exposure to other strategic and precious metals
Empire holds interests in two Western Australian projects — the Walton and Eclipse gold projects — both situated in historically productive mineral belts
While these assets are not the current focus
they contribute exploration upside and optionality within the company’s broader strategy

was indicted last month on a felony aggravated assault charge
and he was initially also jailed on a misdemeanor count of family-violence assault in connection with the May 24 incident
He’s scheduled to appear in court next week
said although the police gang unit investigated
there wasn’t any gang activity in the incident
He said the woman didn’t want to press charges
and the misdemeanor count hasn’t been filed
“It’s not any kind of incident involving his club or anything like that,” Shook said

Carrizal is well-known as a leader of the Dallas chapter of the Bandidos motorcycle club
which became embroiled in a violent brawl May 17
The gunfight left nine people dead and more than a dozen others wounded
who said he represented Carrizal’s uncle and another Bandidos member after the Waco shootout
said Carrizal is still a member of the club
The Dallas assault charge was filed after a man reported that Carrizal and another man
loudly revved motorcycles outside his Old East Dallas home about 1:10 a.m.
The man told police that Carrizal and Grindstaff came to his front door and began to kick it while saying they were going to kill him
The man said Carrizal pulled out a handgun and pointed it at him through the glass door
who later identified herself as Carrizal’s ex-girlfriend
and Carrizal punched her in the stomach repeatedly and pushed her
An investigator saw the man’s front door was damaged and said the woman had a bloody finger
Carrizal yelled it was all him and said Grindstaff had nothing to do with it
Both men wore vests with “Bandidos” on them
Carrizal and Grindstaff — who also was indicted on an aggravated assault charge last month — each posted $50,000 bond shortly after the arrests
Grindstaff’s attorney could not immediately be reached for comment
The charge appears to be the only criminal allegation against Carrizal since the Waco shootout, when police arrested 177 bikers. Carrizal was the only biker who stood trial — but the judge declared a mistrial because of a deadlocked jury, according to The Associated Press
Carrizal testified that the Cossacks provoked his group and one member tried to punch him through his helmet before the gunfire broke out
Carrizal said he fired a shot at a Cossack
The McLennan County district attorney’s office later dropped all of the cases against the bikers. The New York Times published an extensive account last year about how no one was deemed responsible for the deadly brawl
She grew up in El Paso and graduated from the University of Notre Dame with degrees in political science and film and a minor in journalism
she reported for the Chicago Tribune and KTSM
The unique four-year program is advancing academic and career opportunities for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities
A milestone as monumental as graduation can leave many students at a loss for words
But as Thomas Matthew Carrizal prepared to walk the commencement stage at Texas A&M University on May 11
“This is history in the making right here,” Carrizal remarked
flanked by his classmates Jose Miguel Gonzalez
Courtney Elizabeth Osburn and Alexis Celeste Villarreal
The four proud Aggies are the first to graduate from the School of Education and Human Development’s Aggie ACHIEVE
a comprehensive transition program offering postsecondary education and vocational training for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities
the program is designed to give its students a complete college experience; participants experience on- and off-campus living
participate in extracurriculars and Aggie traditions
“Our Aggie ACHIEVE students are really engaged in a fully inclusive learning experience,” said Dr
professor and interim head of the Department of Educational Psychology
“They’re learning academic as well as social and life skills
which are very important for all of our students to have when they graduate and go out into the world.”
Those who complete all four years receive a Certificate of Interdisciplinary Studies
along with a lifetime of memories from their time in Aggieland
saying goodbye to Texas A&M and his classmates is bittersweet
attending sporting events and supporting each other through the many ups and downs of college life
Carrizal said he’s excited for the many opportunities that lie ahead
an annual conference in New York City for students hoping to join the entertainment industry
“Aggie ACHIEVE taught me about independence
got me on the right path to where I am right now,” he said
and I’m just blessed to have these amazing people with me
I’ll still hold them down in my heart very deeply.”
For Carrizal’s parents — native Houstonians — it’s been a joy watching their son take advantage of everything Texas A&M has to offer
said she hopes the success of this first graduating class will encourage other parents to give the program a chance
Jose Gonzalez receives his certificate from Dr
“It’s definitely something to consider — it’s scary at first to think of them being away from home
but this program has really done so much for all the students,” she said
very confident in himself and how he presents himself
And he’s been opened up to a lot more opportunities.”
A few days after graduation, Carrizal and his classmates were off to Austin, where they visited the State Capitol and were present for the ceremonial signing of Texas House Bill 446
which eliminates the use of outdated and offensive terminology across a number of statutes pertaining to intellectual disabilities
The House recently passed a resolution authored by local State Reps
Kyle Kacal and John Raney honoring this first class of Aggie ACHIEVE graduates and recognizing the accomplishments of the program and its students
“The four members of the inaugural cohort of Aggie ACHIEVE have demonstrated hard work
and perseverance on their way to completing the program,” the resolution reads
“and they are indeed deserving of special recognition for this accomplishment as they embark on the next exciting chapter of their lives.”

PHOENIX — A Phoenix man is facing multiple drug charges after nearly 500,000 fentanyl pills were allegedly found in his apartment
27-year-old Arturo Carrizal Castillo was arrested on December 6 as police executed a search warrant for possible drugs in his apartment
Court paperwork shows a drug task force allegedly found approximately 470,000 fentanyl pills and 68 pounds of meth during the search of the apartment near 27th Avenue and Buckeye Road

Share on FacebookShare on X (formerly Twitter)Share on PinterestShare on LinkedInAfter a mistrial was declared last week
a spring 2018 trial date has been set for the first defendant to go on trial in the deadly Twin Peaks shootout
The retrial date for Christopher “Jake” Carrizal
the court coordinator for Waco’s 54th District Court said
“We’ll be ready,” McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reyna said Tuesday
A mistrial was declared in the case after the jury couldn’t come to any agreement on the three gang-related charges on which Carrizal was indicted in connection with the 2015 biker shootout at Waco’s Twin Peaks restaurant
there wasn't enough evidence that the Dallas Chapter
had committed any violence against any person that wasn't self-defense,” Gotro said Friday in response to the ruling
Reyna called the mistrial a “draw,” and vowed Friday not to give up
"When this all started I knew that this is going to be a big fight
I've always known that,” Reyna said Friday
We received some very valuable information from the jury
I think that information that we can utilize to make the case even stronger and we can keep moving forward."
When leaving the McLennan County Courthouse Friday
Carrizal said he knew his battle was only beginning
A new motion filed in McLennan County claims that McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reyna withheld evidence during the Twin Peaks' trial for Christopher Jacob Carrizal
both the prosecution and the defense are required to release all evidence
and interviews – this process is called discovery
The motion asks that during the next trial with Burton George Bergman
that the court determine if the prosecution withheld evidence and
a biker accused in the Twin Peaks shootout
had recordings with the Texas Attorney General's liaison to the DA office
the attorney for Christopher Jacob Carrizal
the biker whose trial ended in a mistrial in November
told Central Texas News Now over the phone that she was the one who spoke with Lindsey and recorded him making those allegations
She said she released the recording to Bergman's attorney
The motion said Lindsey is heard on the recordings saying the "McLennan County District Attorney's office is engaging in 'double dealing,' and 'hiding things,' that both the prosecution and the defense are supposed to know about
The motion said that in the recording Lindsey said Reyna "told them to 'hang onto evidence' that a Texas Ranger fully believed was covered by a judge's Twin Peaks' discovery order."
Central Texas News Now spoke with Reyna over the phone
He said that Lindsey had approached him about a month ago and apologized for his comments
He then issued a statement to Central Texas News Now
Lindsey approached me almost a month ago about his comments in this conversation and apologetically explained to me the context and reasoning behind his statements. I can assure you that the District Attorney’s office and the Attorney General’s office are on the same page regarding this matter. As for the subject matter of the motion
the D.A.’s office is not withholding any evidence. There were items that were discovered during the Carrizal trial that were sealed and placed under protective order. Judge Johnson will address those matters on a case by case basis. For Mr
Gotro told Central Texas News Now that she thinks the state is withholding evidence because it hurts the case
When more evidence came out during Christopher Jacob Carrizal's trial
"Everything discovered in mid-trail undermined the state's case."
Gotro went on to say she thinks the recording speaks for itself and that the motion needs to be pursued
Texas (AP) — A judge declared a mistrial Friday in a case involving a leader of the Bandidos biker gang after jurors said they were hopelessly deadlocked in the first trial stemming from the deadliest shootout between biker groups in U.S
This comes a week after a mistrial was declared in an El Paso case where a Bandidos member was accused in the beating of two rival motorcycle club members.

Jurors had deliberated for 14 hours in the trial of Christopher "Jake" Carrizal
the president of the Bandidos' Dallas chapter
Carrizal had testified that a rival biker club
brawl and gunfight at the Twin Peaks restaurant in Waco that left nine bikers dead
The mistrial leaves unclear the prospects faced by other defendants charged in the shootout
Experts had been looking toward a verdict from the Carrizal trial as an indicator of how solid the government's cases against other leaders and dozens of members might be
Local police arrested 177 bikers after the mayhem
and more than 150 people were eventually charged

No retrial for Carrizal was immediately scheduled
Calls to the prosecutor's office after State District Judge Matt Johnson declared the mistrial rang unanswered
Carrizal was charged with directing the activities of a criminal street gang and two counts of engaging in organized criminal activity with the underlying offenses of murder and aggravated assault
Carrizal told the McLennan County jury that the Cossacks were behaving provocatively when Carrizal's group arrived at the restaurant for a meeting
Carrizal said a Cossack was trying to punch him through his safety helmet with brass knuckles when he heard gunshots
He said he tried to reach for the knife in his pocket but couldn't grasp it
As the fight continued and he was on the ground
he reached for a two-shot Derringer pistol in his back pocket and fired it at a Cossack
he took cover behind a light pole and yelled for his father
He said he saw one member of his group lying dead and another bleeding from the head
More: Bandido could face life in prison if convicted in El Paso biker battle
He finally saw two police officers helping his father
The Waco Tribune-Herald reported that in a note Thursday night
the jury foreman reported a juror identified as "Mr
P" told the other jurors he had prior experience with the Cossacks and would not change his mind because of it
That juror has ties to a McLennan County motorcycle shop
which he disclosed on his juror questionnaire in early October
Biker gangs are a small but violent criminal force in the U.S.
with some 44,000 members or associates of a handful of "outlaw" gangs
is among the largest of the criminal gangs
along with the Hells Angels and a couple of others
The Cossacks were considered less violent until the Waco confrontation
The start of any Waco trials was delayed by the enormous volume of evidence and several bikers' attempts to have their cases dismissed
had complained before and during trial about delays in receiving evidence from prosecutors and law enforcement agencies that she was entitled to

The issue prompted Gotro to object when the judge instructed the deadlocked jurors on Friday morning that another jury would hear the same evidence if he had to declare a mistrial
She said the delays in the disclosure of evidence against her client created an "absolute inability to use that evidence to prepare for trial."
"I believe a second jury is going to hear a very different set of evidence," Gotro said
Judge denies biker's request for delay in Waco trialAssociated PressFORT WORTH
Texas — The Texas judge who would preside over the first trial of a biker allegedly involved in a Waco shootout at a meeting of rival motorcycle gangs that left nine people dead denied a motion to delay the trial
Christopher “Jake” Carrizal was among more than 150 bikers indicted following the 2015 shooting on charges of murder conspiracy and engaging in organized criminal activity
He could face up to life in prison if convicted
claimed state District Judge Ralph Strother “grossly abused” his discretion when he declined to enforce her subpoenas for local law enforcement to appear and produce records in court
Since taking up Carrizal’s case last spring
Gotro has argued that the state has denied her client
a 35-year-old train conductor and member of the Dallas branch of the Bandidos
access to records and material evidence that she needs to prepare his defense
“I think they tampered with evidence,” Gotro told The Associated Press on Wednesday
citing incomplete law enforcement audio-visual recordings and at least three bullet casings that have not yet been tested in the investigation of the three Waco police officers who shot bikers during the gunfight
A grand jury in September declined to recommend charges for the officers
Prosecutors had asked the grand jury whether the shootings were justified after the officers had been cleared by an internal police investigation
McLennen County Assistant District Attorney Michael Jarrett told Gotro that his office had “turned over the evidence that we have.”
Ballistics reports seen by The Associated Press show that four of the people killed were struck by the same caliber of rifle fired by Waco police
and that two of them were struck only by that kind of rifle
Gotro also said that a motion to recuse Strother “will be filed imminently.” By law
the motion would preclude Strother from taking any more action in Carrizal’s case until the issue is resolved
Three other motions to recuse Strother filed by bikers are awaiting rulings
The bikers claim that Strother has shown bias in favor of state prosecutors
Strother could not be immediately reached for comment
Strother denied the motion and ordered Carrizal and his attorney in court Thursday for a jury selection hearing
Gotro has not responded to the court’s request to submit potential questions or objections to proposed questions on a questionnaire that will be submitted to the jury panel on Friday
now or at any foreseeable time in the future

11 (UPI) -- A judge in Texas declared a mistrial after a jury said it couldn't reach a verdict in the first case to go to trial related to a motorcycle gang shootout in Waco
Carrizal was among 170 people arrested in May 2015 for a gunfight between the Bandidos and Cossacks motorcycle club. Nine people died and dozens were injured in the incident, which also involved law enforcement officers at a Twin Peaks restaurant
"There wasn't enough evidence that the Dallas Chapter, and specifically Jake Carrizal had committed any violence against any person that wasn't self-defense so today it's a victory," Carrizal's attorney, Casie Gotro, told KXXV-TV in Waco
"We received good feedback from the jury and I think it is feedback we can utilize to make our case stronger," he said
that this was going to be a tough fight and the one thing I can say is that I'm not going to give up."
A pair of UTEP faculty members have volunteered to help the chapter promote and execute “Mindful Bridges,” a four-part social engagement series for caretakers of people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease
a form of dementia that affects a person’s memory
Elvira Carrizal-Dukes, an assistant professor of practice in the Chicano Studies program, and Sarah Yvonne Jimenez, an instructor in clinical nursing, will help with the free public workshops that began May 7, 2020. Interested participants should contact the chapter at 915-497-9930 or WestTexas@alz.org to reserve a space
Carrizal-Dukes will talk about how to keep a journal and her husband
comic book artist and publisher Ronnie Dukes
Jimenez will co-facilitate the workshops that will encourage journal writing and doodling as ways to self-reflect and lower stress from a health care perspective
“We anticipate it will be a very innovative way to reach those (participants),” Jimenez said
She is completing her dissertation at The University of Texas at Tyler and plans to earn her doctorate in nursing this summer
The Alzheimer’s chapter has asked her to serve the association as an El Paso ambassador at the state and federal levels in search of legislative support
“We are very excited about rolling this program out.”
The journals and doodles are tied to the advertisements that Dukes and Carrizal-Dukes developed for these workshops
The couple created five four-panel color comic strips that focus on common challenges faced by caregivers and their patients with dementia
The hope is that these suggested methods will help the caretakers
to express their feelings and reduce anxiety
“I am doing this to impact people's lives in a positive way,” said Carrizal-Dukes
who is a doctoral student in UTEP’s Rhetoric and Composition program
She expects to earn her degree this summer
“It has never been more important for us to understand what it is like to have dementia and to find out what we can do to help in our community's response to the current crisis.”
The University professor said her efforts fit in with the visual rhetoric and composition portion of her doctoral studies
Part of her research involves how the visual arts and social justice can affect the world
It is part of what she called GraphicMedicine
a growing trend where medical issues and patient care are shared in a comic book style
Carrizal-Dukes wanted to raise awareness of the issues faced by caregivers
accomplished this through a few impactful words and images
powerful and accessible method of delivering illness narratives,” Carrizal-Dukes said
professor of rhetoric and writing studies and Carrizal-Dukes’ dissertation director
She said comics may be a better way to communicate healthcare information to patients who are visual learners
“People can learn more from these everyday stories that are vividly drawn than they might from reading about Alzheimer’s in a magazine or from listening to their doctor,” Mangelsdorf said.
the Alzheimer chapter’s director of programs and services
He said a comic strip approach makes the message
He also noted that the effect of dementia is multigenerational
“The family unit caring for their loved one involves the children
grandchildren and great-grandchildren,” said Hernandez
who earned his master’s degree in art education from UTEP in 2002
“This medium appeals to broader audiences.”
Hernandez said he hoped that the workshops would give caretakers ideas on how they could spark memories and promote conversation with individuals with different forms of dementia
He scheduled the workshops because of the COVID-19 outbreak and to coincide with June being Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month
Hernandez said he reached out to Jimenez and Carrizal-Dukes because they have worked together in the past
He worked with the writer/artist when he was education curator at the El Paso Museum of Art
and has worked with the nursing instructor through her volunteer work with his chapter as a community educator and support group facilitator
“With UTEP’s strong presence in the community
it makes sense to partner with the University,” Hernandez said
“We share many of the same values and goals.”
A former employee for the Office of Inspector General filed a whistleblower lawsuit Tuesday, saying he was wrongly fired after raising complaints about the way the office investigated Child Protective Services’ role in child abuse deaths.
Joe Carrizal, Jr. sued the state Health and Human Services Commission, saying the agency knew about problems with the Inspector General’s death investigations, but failed to act on them because to do so would implicate its own incompetence, the lawsuit states.
“Plaintiff was exposing a known political ‘hot potato’ that endangered the lives of countless Texas children and threatened the careers of numerous political appointees,” the filing states.
Health and Human Services Commission spokeswoman Stephanie Goodman said the the lawsuit is “completely without merit.”
Because of his complaints, Carrizal claims, he was fired in July. In his lawsuit, Carrizal states that investigators were ordered to complete cursory investigations that barred them from interviewing sources including key CPS employees, independent witnesses, local law enforcement or family members of the deceased children.

A Tuscaloosa County grand jury indicted 26-year-old Christopher Carrizal on a charge of criminally negligent homicide, according to court records made public Wednesday. The indictment stems from the June 21, 2017 death of Darrell James Pettie.
that day on Interstate 59 between the Brookwood and Mercedes exits
Authorities said Pettie had been involved in an accident and was standing outside of his vehicle when he was hit by Carrizal's 2005 Dodge 1500 truck
it appears authorities sent the case directly to the grand jury which issued the indictment against him on April 18
In additional to criminally negligent homicide
Carrizal also is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury or death
Pettie's family has since filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Carrizal
Brighton police announced they were searching for a 1-year-old boy who was kidnapped
who they said was believed to be with his biological father
Tony Washington said the boy was taken by force from his mother's home
the boy was returned to his mother by the family's church members
Carrizal was later arrested on charges of kidnapping
He has not yet gone to trial on those charges
Jail records show he was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on Tuesday on more unrelated charges of failure to appear in court
It's not clear whether he has yet been booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail on the criminally negligent homicide charge
