RDM Group announces its intention to close the mill in Castellbisbal
RDM Group is forced to take this difficult decision due to increasingly challenging market conditions
inflationary pressures in Europe and a challenging geopolitical environment exacerbated by the Russia-Ukraine conflict
combined with a significant drop in European cartonboard demand between 2021 and 2023
have led to accumulated stocks in the value chain and therefore very low mill capacity utilization rates
In Iberia the demand has sharply decreased
This context particularly impacts the Castellbisbal Mill
RDM Group will continue to operate in Iberia through Paprinsa Mill in Mollerussa
that has greater flexibility options which enable RDM Group to strengthen competitiveness and better adapt to the current and future expected sector’s dynamics
The Group will cover market demand through Paprinsa and other mills in the group for special products
RDM Group is the leading producer in the recycled cartonboard business and the largest producer in Italy

A former commander of Spain's National Police force in Catalonia has allegedly killed his ex-partner and wife
Juan Fortuny de Pedro was the second-highest ranking National Police officer in Catalonia until January 2023 when he retired
The Mossos d'Esquadra regional police force's criminal investigation unit is investigating the three deaths in the municipalities of Rubí and Castellbisbal in Barcelona
The crime has sent shockwaves through the region's National Police unit where Juan Fortuny was highly regarded
A tribute paid to him at the Barcelona police headquarters last January
Mossos received a tip-off early on Tuesday morning (20 August) that the body of a woman had been found in a house in Carrer de la Música in Rubí
The bodies of another woman and a man were then found in Castellbisbal
Police located the bodies in what was the couple's usual home
the three deaths were caused by the use of a firearm and the victims are "the ex-partner and the current partner of the alleged perpetrator
The High Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) said neither of the policeman's two victims were on record as previous victims of gender violence
The first theory police are investigating is that the retired commissioner allegedly first murdered his ex-partner in Rubí and then moved to Castellbisbal
The court in Rubí is investigating the incident as a case of gender violence
the two murdered women would become the 11th and 12th victims at the hands of their partners or ex-partners in Catalonia so far this year
where his first posting was the National Police headquarters in Catalonia
where a tribute was paid to him on the day of his retirement just a year and a half ago
After carrying out various functions at headquarters
he was assigned as commissioner to Rubí (Barcelona)
Fortuny was in charge of the centre for the internment of foreigners (CIE) in Barcelona
while in 2006 he returned to the high command
where he was in charge of the police intervention unit (UIP) and head of the unit against immigration and border networks (Ucrif)
Fortuny's rise through the ranks continued in November 2012
when he was appointed provincial chief of police in Lérida
He reached this position after some highly valued work as the head of the Ucrif
which had become "the most important unit in the country in terms of the volume of gangs dismantled and the number of arrests made"
which was pointed out when he took up his new post in Lérida
He remained the top police officer in Lérida until 2016
when he was removed and sent to a lower-ranking post in Tarragona
Commissioner Fortuny appealed the transfer
which he claimed was politically motivated
and in 2018 the High Court of Justice of Catalonia ruled that the directorate general of police of the ministry of interior acted with "arbitrariness" in the dismissal
in 2019 he was promoted to become the number two of the National Police in Catalonia as regional operational chief
The town halls of Rubí and Castellbisbal called for a minutes of silence in tribute to the victims this Wednesday
"The councils of Rubí and Castellbisbal have called for a minute's silence in tribute to the victims
These are terrible and intolerable acts to reflect on as a society," said the mayor of Rubí

The RDM Group (Reno de Medici) has announced its intention to discontinue production at its mill in Castellbisbal
which has the capacity to produce up to 190,000 tpy of white-lined chipboard and employs 237 people
is facing closure due to challenging market conditions
The decision comes amid a sharp decline in demand in Iberia and the mill's unsustainable cost structure
which relies on operating at full capacity to avoid losses
Despite investments since 2019 to improve efficiency and competitiveness
the mill has continued to face declining sales and production challenges
RDM is adjusting its production capacity and is engaging in talks with labour representatives
This step follows the closure of RDM's Blendecques mill in France in 2024
RDM Group said it would continue to operate in Iberia through the more flexible Paprinsa Mill in Mollerussa
which enables the company to strengthen competitiveness and better adapt to the current and future expected sector's dynamics

Two incidents on the Catalan commuter train service Rodalies have disrupted services on lines R4, R7, and R3.
The first incident is due to track equipment at the Castellbisbal station. As a result, the R4 train is currently operating on a single track between the station and Molins de Rei.
This has reduced service to two trains per hour in each direction between Sant Vicenç de Calders and Hospitalet de Llobregat.
Trains that start and end at Martorell begin and end their route in Hospitalet.
The incident at Castellbisbal initially affected R8 trains, but that line has gone back to the normal schedule, while R7 still runs with delays.
A second incident has also taken place at the Fabra i Puig station, causing delays of between five to ten minutes on lines R3, R4, and R7.

Two electrical failures are causing delays on the R4, R8, and the R2 north Rodalies lines this Monday morning.
A breakdown in Castellbisbal is causing delays of up to 25 minutes on the R4. Trains may remain stopped longer than usual, increasing the journey time, when approaching the section between Sant Sadurní d'Anoia and Molins de Rei.
On the R4 south, the service of two trains per hour and direction is maintained.
A second incident also involving an electric failure in Mollet Sant Fost is causing delays on the R8 and R2 north lines.
On the R8 there is an alternative road service after an electrical incident in Mollet-Sant Fost completely halted the line. According to railway infrastructures manager Adif, R2 north are experiencing delays of around 25 minutes.
Several R4 commuters claimed, once again, their "extreme frustration" after a new episode of disruptions, with special attention to the way both incidents were solved.
"Traveling with the R4 is a terrible experience," Maria José, resident in Sant Sadurní said. She was planning to get on the 09:05 am train to arrive in Barcelona well before her appointment at 11:00 am.
Montse, another commuter, criticized Renfe as "it is always the same issue." She had been waiting for over an hour.
The director of Rodalies, Antonio Carmona, has said that the measures taken on the R4, R8, and R2 north lines aim to “guarantee” the mobility of users.
In a media briefing, Carmona said that the aim was to “minimize” the impact and ensure that passengers could be transferred “at all times.”
The Renfe head explained that the service had to “reduce operational capacity” by half, with two trains per hour and direction.
Meanwhile, Carmona added that 65 new workers have been added to the Operations Management Center at the Clot-Aragó station, as well as across the territory, to improve information about incidents to users in real time.

It produces 160,000t of white lined chipboard (WLC) annually from recycled fibres
Construction of the facility started in 1964 with operations commencing in 1968
The facility includes an 8,000m2 warehouse and a cogeneration plant which provides steam and electricity
Stora Enso’s Cartiberia sheeting plant is located adjacent to the mill and is equipped with five sheeters
The company launched new recycling technology at the mill in September 2011
The process was given the ‘Best of the Best’ LIFE Environment Projects award for 2010 by the European Union
The WLC produced at the mill includes three layers and is coated on both sides
The first layer is made of 100% white waste paper
the medium layer includes 85% waste paper and 15% thermo-mechanical paper and broken cardboard
and the last layer includes 100% waste paper and broken cardboard
The products are used for packaging chocolate and confectionery
The mill is equipped with a Tampella board machine
The machine can operate at a maximum speed of 500m/min
It is equipped with three Fourdrinier headboxes
The Tampella board machine is equipped with a Mütek PCT-20 Charge Analyser
The Charge Analyser helps to reduce chemical costs
The mill is also equipped with a ValCoat coating station supplied by Metso paper
The WLC manufactured at the plant is made from recovered paper such as white waste
These materials are recovered from the Barcelona region
Milk and beverage cartons are received from Spain
Virgin fibres constituting about 10% of total raw materials are added to the WLC in order to meet Stora Enso’s high quality standards
The company commenced recycling of cores from cardboard reels in 2006 to use in the manufacture of WLC
The cardboard reels come from the Stora Enso operations in Finland and Sweden
Stora Enso and Alucha Recycling Technologies collaborated to develop the new recycling technology introduced at the mill
The technology includes recycling of juice and milk cartons
Drink cartons are usually made of paper and thin plastic-aluminium layers
Existing technologies could recover only the paper present in the cartons while the plastic-aluminium layers ended up in landfill
The new technology is based on pyrolysis and includes heating of the cartons in the absence of oxygen
Cardboard is first separated from the cartons and fed into a chamber
It is then heated in a controlled environment due to which the plastic evaporates to form a hot gas
The gas is cooled down to produce recycled oil and gas
The introduction of the new technology has enabled the plant to use 50,000t of cardboard annually recovered from drinks cartons
The process reduces the amount of waste going into landfill and helps in protecting the environment as well
Using recovered plastic to generate steam for the mill will save 6,300t of natural gas
The process also avoids about 50,000t of laminate being sent to landfill
saving about 1,500 lorry trips and the resulting carbon emissions
It enables aluminium to be recovered effectively

Amazon's implementation of this new technology at its logistics center in Castellbisbal is its first in Spain. The center opened last October and specializes in Amazon Pantry orders. When the technology is implemented in El Prat de Llobregat as well this fall, Amazon Robotics will be working in twenty Amazon logistics centers across the United States, England, Poland, and Catalonia.
According to the Amazon Spain Fulfillment general manager, Fred Pattje, the robots will make the employees’ job easier in order to improve customer service. The Amazon robots slide underneath and move the storage shelves by themselves. In this way, the number of stored items per square meter can increase by 50%, which will accelerate order preparations and give customers the benefit of a wider range of products, thanks to the additional storage space.
In contrast with Amazon’s logistic centers in San Fernando de Henares, in Madrid, in which employees have to go to the storage shelves to prepare the orders, at the centers with the Amazon Robotics technology, the shelves will come to the employee, which will save them around six to seven kilometers in trips.
Despite using the same technology, the Robots’ and the shelves’ quantity and capacity will be adapted to each center. In this way, 350 robots will operate the 2,000 storage shelves in Castellbisbal and 3,500 robots will handle the 50,000 storage shelves in Prat. Pattje said that, for now, this new technology will not be implemented in any other Amazon logistics center in Spain.
The new hirings announced this Wednesday are in addition to the 1,500 jobs forecast for the logistics center in Prat de Llobregat and the 650 at the new logistics center in Martorelles, over the next three years. Furthermore, 500 more jobs will be added in Barcelona from now until 2019 with the opening of the ‘Seller Support Hub’, which is going to help thousands of small French, Italian, and Spanish companies sell their products through Amazon Marketplace.
More than 700 police officers from two forces
have carried out another large-scale operation on Wednesday morning against a criminal group involved in human trafficking
The officers are carrying out around thirty raids in various Catalan towns in the northern
including Castellbisbal (in the county of Vallès Occidental)
Searches are also being carried out in Gelida
The operation is led by the criminal investigation area of the Metropolitana Nord and the Rubí Investigation Unit
The focus of the operation is the organization's marijuana plants
Wednesday's raids follows another wide-scale operation involving 500 officers across Catalonia and other parts of Spain on Tuesday, which saw at least 22 people arrested.
Courts have put a secrecy order over the security actions.

Taking into account all of these projects, the e-commerce giant will create 2,500 jobs in Catalonia.
