MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Twins have returned third baseman Royce Lewis from his rehab assignment
clearing the way for his season debut after he strained his left hamstring in spring training
The Twins reinstated both Lewis and multi-position player Willi Castro from the injured list on Monday
putting both regulars in play for the start of their three-game series against Baltimore on Tuesday
Castro missed 16 games with a strained right oblique muscle
Lewis went 4 for 23 with one double in six games with St
finishing yet another rehabilitation that has defined his young career
Lewis suffered his latest injury on March 16 while running out a ground ball in an exhibition game
Lewis missed the 2021 season after he tore his right ACL when he slipped on ice at his Texas home during a freak winter storm
He needed reconstructive ACL surgery on the same knee in 2022
after a collision with the wall while making a catch during a brief audition in center field barely two weeks after his major league debut
He opened the 2023 season on the injured list while still in recovery and debuted that year in late May
Lewis also had IL stints that season with a strained left oblique and a left hamstring strain
enduring IL stints for a strained right quadriceps and a right adductor strain
Twins infielders Royce Lewis and Willi Castro are expected to be activated from the injured list as early as Tuesday
BOSTON – The Twins need an offensive boost
particularly some power in the middle of the lineup
The Twins didn’t announce any roster moves Sunday
but Lewis is primed to make his season debut after he played six games on a rehab assignment
Lewis, who suffered a moderate hamstring strain in his left leg during spring training
totaled four hits in 23 at-bats with the Class AAA Saints with one double
He started his last three games at third base
who have the fourth-fewest homers (28) in the American League
are hoping Lewis can provide an immediate spark
he has had five stints on the IL and he homered in the first game he returned three times

The 25-year-old Lewis batted .233 with 16 homers
16 doubles and 47 RBI in 82 games last season
which included a prolonged slump throughout September
Castro, an All-Star last year
hasn’t played since April 16 because of an oblique strain
“Hopefully getting some players back this week will be a huge lift for us because we could really benefit from having a few guys that have had real impact here at the big league level coming back to this team,” Twins President Derek Falvey said Saturday
Twins reliever Jorge Alcala has been inconsistent all season
and he had one of his roughest outings Friday when he gave up five hits
and three runs in an inning against the Boston Red Sox
he let his first two baserunners essentially steal bases uncontested
Alcala owns a 9.49 ERA through 12⅓ innings
“It’s been a tough go of it,” manager Rocco Baldelli said
I think he’s still settling in and getting comfortable a little bit with his role
He’s been pitching multiple innings at times
but I think all the ingredients are still there.”
Alcala’s fastball velocity is down about 1 mph from last year — he’s still averaging 97 mph — but hitters are doing a lot of damage on his slider
which was his best strikeout pitch a year ago
Strike-throwing has been an issue with a walk in seven of his 12 appearances
Four of his eight walks this season have been against the first batter he faced
“We know he has to do a better job against the run game and focus on the details and be prepared for what’s obviously coming his way when you face a team that has a lot of good runners and you steal bases,” Baldelli said
He should be able to go out there and work through this
DaShawn Keirsey Jr. was thrown out at the plate
in the eighth inning Saturday on a ground ball to third base
a baserunner at third base running immediately on a ground ball with fewer than two outs
resulted in an out at home within the past week
“If you ground out directly to the third base two times in a row
but when you hit a little chopper or a squibbler and you score
you don’t really recognize the positives the way you recognize the ones that don’t go your way,” Baldelli said
Paul Saints picked up a 3-2 victory in 10 innings Sunday to conclude their series at Columbus
playing in just his second game after he broke his hand in spring training
Zebby Matthews gave up two runs and seven hits in four innings
and Michael Tonkin pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts on his rehab assignment

MLB Trade Rumors
By Leo Morgenstern | May 5
After bursting out of the gate as a rookie in 2023
He hit .207 with a 97 wRC+ through his first 58 games last season before the Twins sent him down to Triple-A
a pair of demotions that summer didn’t seem to help
as he would go on to hit just .186 with a 49 wRC+ over another 36 MLB games
a solid spring helped Julien earn a spot on Minnesota’s Opening Day roster
and the injuries to Lewis and Castro helped him earn regular playing time
he failed to capitalize on that opportunity
His 2025 slash line looks eerily similar to his disappointing 2024 slash line
and he has already compiled -0.5 FanGraphs WAR
The silver lining is that his Statcast expected metrics are much more promising than they were last year (.337 xwOBA
it’s not hard to understand why the Twins would rather the second baseman get consistent at-bats at Triple-A to help him work through his struggles and (hopefully) build back his confidence
Gasper’s demotion is, admittedly, less newsworthy. The Twins acquired the 29-year-old in a minor trade this past offseason
and this is already the second time they have optioned him in 2025
and left field for the Twins in 17 games this season
Castro, an All-Star for the first time in 2024, had been on the IL with a right oblique strain since April 24
As the Twins’ offense continues to underwhelm
the team will look to a healthy Castro to rediscover the above-average offense that made him such a sneakily valuable player in each of the past two years
Lewis, meanwhile, will be making his 2025 debut after suffering a hamstring strain in spring training
The young third baseman has shown the potential to be a game-changing bat in the middle of the order; he hit .307 with 17 home runs and a 158 wRC+ in 70 games between 2022-23
he took a step back offensively last season
His power numbers were still impressive (16 home runs in 82 games)
but his batting average dropped substantially
He was still an above-average hitter (108 wRC+)
but he didn’t develop into the superstar the Twins were hoping he could be
It certainly didn’t help that injuries
a common theme throughout his first two seasons
the Twins will hope he looks more like his 2022-23 self at the plate and that he can finally put his injury issues behind him
Update: Lewis tripped on his way to the clubhouse
Byron Buxton isn’t happy that there are now two injury-prone players on the team
There are at least three (Correa) but in the end there’s usually only one around at any given point
This front office doesn’t trade guys at their low points
No the time to trade him would be when he’s certainly a commodity
At that point you’d probably want to keep him
I hope Castro took advantage of his time off to grow out his ‘stache and neck beard into a shrub-like mess like his namesake Fidel
Gasper did at least bring that to the team
Buxton or Correa will be injured by the end of the week

The Twins announced Monday that Lewis and utility man Willi Castro have been reinstated from the injured list
with corresponding roster moves sending Eddy Julien and Mickey Gasper to Triple-A St
Lewis hasn't played this season due to a moderate hamstring strain that he suffered while running to first base in a spring training game against the Red Sox on March 16
Castro played in 18 games and was hitting .227 when he strained his oblique on April 16
Lewis posted a batting line of .174/.167/.217 with four hits in 23 at-bats
so he'll be returning to the lineup cold

Lewis will make his season debut Tuesday against the Orioles after he was sidelined because of a hamstring strain
Fifty-two days after Royce Lewis injured his left hamstring in a spring training game, he’s ready to make his season debut
The Twins activated Lewis and Willi Castro from the 10-day injured list Monday
ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Baltimore Orioles at Target Field
Edouard Julien and Mickey Gasper were optioned to Class AAA St
has been plagued by injuries throughout the last four seasons
but he gives the club a much-needed power bat in the middle of the lineup
16 doubles and 47 RBI in 82 games last year

Castro was sidelined with an oblique strain, which the switch hitter felt when he tried to take lefthanded swings. He’s posted a .227 batting average and a .655 OPS in 18 games this year.
Julien and Gasper were top candidates for demotions because both hold minor league options, unlike recent additions Jonah Bride and Kody Clemens.
Julien was batting .128 in his past 48 plate appearances with two extra-base hits, eight walks and 15 strikeouts.
Gasper has six hits in 34 at-bats (.176 average) this season with one double, zero homers, four walks and nine strikeouts.
Lewis, who played in six minor league rehab games before he was activated, is expected to split time between third base and designated hitter. It would allow Castro and Brooks Lee to play regularly in the infield.
Lee, who has been the primary third baseman over the past three weeks, is hitting .318 over his past 13 games.
and reinforcements appear to be on the way as soon as Tuesday's series opener at Target Field against the Baltimore Orioles
"Royce Lewis and Willi Castro are expected to be activated from the injured list as early as Tuesday night’s series opener against the Baltimore Orioles," writes Twins beat reporter Bobby Nightengale Jr
Minnesota hasn't made roster moves to confirm the report
but Lewis has played six rehab games at Triple-A St
though he hasn't played in games on consecutive days yet
MLB.com's Matthew Leach reported on April 28 that Lewis "will likely need to play back-to-back days in the field on his rehab assignment before he is activated."
so if Lewis is activated for Tuesday's game against the Orioles
he simply won't have had an opportunity to play games on consecutive days before rejoining the big league club
Lewis is slashing .174/.167/.217 with four hits in 23 at-bats
Castro has been out since April 16 because of a strained oblique
he hasn't been sent on a rehab assignment
so he could be coming in cold after nearly three weeks out of action
the 2024 All-Star was hitting .227 with one homer and six doubles in 18 games
the Pittsburgh Steelers took to the undrafted free agent pool to land some hidden gems
the Steelers seem to have had good decision-making during the process
The Steelers also selected two players from the same college team when they selected linebacker Jack Sawyer and quarterback Will Howard of Ohio State
he has already begun to receive high praise for his abilities despite going undrafted
The Athletic's Nick Baumgardner named Castro the Steelers best free agent signing in an article where he detailed every team's free agent signings
"A three-year starting safety — and a playmaker — for Phil Parker’s always-tough Iowa defense
Castro doesn’t have elite athleticism but is an extremely smart defender
both in pass coverage (especially zone) and run support." Baumgardner wrote
Castro's football IQ receives a highlight
It is entirely possible that Castro becomes an impact player for the team
as we saw an undrafted secondary player in Beanie Bishop get extended playing time during the previous season
finishing as a second-team Big Ten player in 2023 and third team Big-Ten in 2024
With 39 total tackles and three tackles for loss in his final collegiate season, Castro represents a work in progress
but an easy project due to his high level understanding of the game of football

Castro was one of 44 people on the Clearwater Ferry, when investigators said a private boat captained by local businessman, Jeff Knight, crashed into them.

Lewis’ return couldn’t come fast enough for a team that has been lacking a distinct thump since right fielder Matt Wallner went down with his own hamstring injury
It’s hard to place that pressure on a young
still relatively unexperienced player like Lewis
but the former top draft pick is joining a lineup that ranks in the bottom five in near every meaningful offensive category
Even Castro will be an upgrade over having the likes of Gasper
Gasper was always a clear demotion candidate
combined with a strong start from Brooks Lee
meant the struggling second baseman was losing playing time
After hitting well enough to re-earn the leadoff spot
Julien had a .502 OPS with a 32% strikeout rate from April 18th onward

While Julien may be a better hitter than players like Kody Clemens or DaShawn Keirsey Jr.
those two have significant defensive and base running value off the bench
there’s little else he can do to contribute to the Twins
Castro’s return should let the struggling and oft-injured Carlos Correa take a few days off as well
Correa has played in every game for the Twins since April 16th
which would be good news if he were hitting well

PALM HARBOR, Fla. — The sister of the man who was killed when a recreational boat crashed into the Clearwater Ferry on Sunday said she wants justice for her brother as the FWC has not filed charges in the case
“This guy have to pay for what he did to my brother
He take away his happiness from us,” said Sandy Todd
Todd said she was told by an FWC officer that her brother
was riding in the back of the ferry when it was struck from behind by the boat
which caused a head injury and knocked him into the water
Ten other passengers were also injured in the crash
“This is a tragedy that we don’t know how to handle.”
The sister said Castro was a hard working dad who left behind two daughters
She said he worked overnights for the postal service and lived in Palm Harbor
“A wonderful father. He was an amazing person
“My brother was the happiest man in this world
they can tell you that he was always working with a smile
Spectrum News is not naming the recreational boat driver because he has not been charged with a crime
he remained at the scene for a period of time but left before law enforcement arrived
Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office deputies located the driver about 3.5 miles south of the crash scene and seized the boat
FWC said the driver voluntarily gave a breath sample
sent a letter to the lead FWC investigator outlining why he believes his client should not be charged with a crime:
Hayslett said it is crucial to emphasize that no signs of alcohol or drug impairment were noted by law enforcement
he acted lawfully and responsibly,” he stated
“Exercising sound judgment under high-stress conditions.”
As the complicated FWC investigation unfolds
the Castro family has been making funeral arrangement
Todd said her 75-year-old grief-stricken mother flew in from Peru on Wednesday
They took her out of the plane in her connection
thinking that she was passing out,” she said
“My mom is a happy woman… I don't think she's going to have a smile on her face anymore.”
Wallner expected to miss extended timePlus: Twins hopeful that Lewis and Castro could return by early MayApril 28th
the team’s head athletic trainer said Monday
According to Nick Paparesta, Keaschall does not need surgery on his fractured right ulna bone
but “it’s probably going to be a couple of months” before the dynamic rookie is playing in games again
He will receive weekly x-rays to make sure that his non-displaced fracture stays non-displaced
Meanwhile, Wallner has what has been diagnosed as a “moderate to severe” left hamstring injury and began jogging on a treadmill on Monday
He is not expected to begin running outdoors for at least another week
meaning he is likely multiple weeks away from being able to play in games
“I’ll have another evaluation process with him when we get home [from the current road trip],” Paparesta said
that gives me another week [of] letting him get better and get stronger
and then when we get home we’ll have a week to see how he does with his running progression.”
Wallner would first need to advance to running in a straight line
before playing in Minor League rehabilitation games
The news on Lewis and Castro is more encouraging. Lewis, also recuperating from a left hamstring strain, is progressing well in his Minor League rehabilitation assignment
He will play nine innings as a designated hitter on Tuesday with Triple-A St
then a full game at third base on Wednesday
It is expected that he will need to play back-to-back games in the field before being activated
so it probably will be about a week before Lewis returns to the Major League roster
Castro has resumed baseball activities after being shut down for a couple of days
He did all activities except hitting left-handed on Monday
and hopes to try hitting from the left side on Tuesday
after which the club will decide how soon he could return
He would be eligible to return as soon as Thursday
but there is no indication yet that he will play that soon

A season of unexpected twists often hinges on timely comebacks and the return of key players
With the Minnesota Twins inching closer to equilibrium in the standings
the anticipation is building for a pivotal series at Target Field
The Twins have been quietly transforming their season trajectory by securing eight victories in their last 13 outings
drawing them within five games of a .500 record
This resurgence is a testament not only to the team’s persistent grit but also to the promising potential of their emerging roster
The current wave of success has set the stage for another crucial juncture as they prepare to face off against the Baltimore Orioles
Among the anticipated returns are two figures whose presence on the field has long been valued
who has been diligently working his way back with six rehab appearances at Triple-A St
has been approached with caution; the requirement to play on consecutive days during his rehabilitation has not yet been met
“Royce Lewis and Willi Castro are expected to be activated from the injured list,” a sentiment that has generated optimism within the organization
sidelined since April 16 due to a strained oblique
Without the benefit of a structured rehab stint
his return may represent a leap of faith after nearly three weeks away from competitive play
Castro was building momentum with modest numbers—a batting average of .227 accompanied by one home run and six doubles in 18 games—underscoring his potential to make a significant impact upon his return
The reintegration of Lewis and Castro is more than just a roster update; it symbolizes a tactical recalibration
Their fresh presence is expected to add versatility and dynamism at a critical stage of the season
The careful planning surrounding their reintroduction highlights the organization’s commitment to balancing player health with competitive ambition
Their return opens a new chapter where on-field chemistry could translate to vital wins and a rejuvenated team spirit
The unfolding narrative of the Twins’ season reinforces the idea that resilience
As the team navigates the challenges of a competitive schedule
the anticipated contributions of Lewis and Castro serve as a reminder: every player’s journey
is integral to the broader tapestry of success
The coming series against the Orioles is not just another set of games—it is a testament to the power of reinvention and the enduring spirit of the game
Sebastian Castro is a tough, run-first safety with versatility who can play multiple spots within Iowa's defense. Primarily functioning in the box and as a nickel defender, Castro brings a high football IQ and physicality to the field. With his hands-on approach, he excels at shedding blocks to get to the ball, making him a valuable asset in run defense.
triggering quickly downhill and consistently taking good angles to the ball
His high motor and physicality allow him to confidently take on blockers
using his hands well to shed them and disrupt plays
his aggressive play-style can occasionally backfire
as he may overrun ball-carriers or bite on play fakes
He is best when flowing to the ball in the open field
but his lack of athleticism can show up in close quarters
Castro is reliable but limited in coverage
and he can drive on the ball with above-average feet and hips
he lacks the elite acceleration and twitch required for man-to-man coverage on an island
making him more suited for zone or underneath responsibilities
showing good timing and the ability to play the ball in the air
His tendency to be heavy-footed can result in separation against quicker players
especially in change-of-direction scenarios
Sebastian Castro projects as a mid-round pick with the potential to be a high-level backup or rotational safety in the NFL
and football IQ make him a valuable piece in defensive schemes that prioritize physicality and box play
While he will need to refine his coverage abilities
Castro has the tools to contribute on defense and special teams
— Stout run-first defender who isn't afraid to bang around with offensive linemen
Castro aligns all over the field for the Hawkeye defense
primarily in the box and at the nickel spot
— High-motor player with tenacity to get to the ball who triggers extremely quickly to the run
Comes screaming downhill looking for contact
showing above-average feet and hips to drive on the ball
— Showcases ball skills and timing necessary to play the ball and receivers when the ball is in the air
leading to slower change of direction and separation in coverage
where he may lose leverage and overrun the ball-carrier
— His aggressiveness can get him in trouble with play fakes
He can't afford to give up his leverage and cushion in coverage
he may lose sight of his threats and struggle to find the play

replaced the more moderate Miro Cardona as head of the country’s new provisional government
During Fidel Castro's tenure as President of Cuba
he survived an estimated 638 attempts on his life - and that's just from the CIA
The most outstanding feature of his politics during the period was his anti-American beliefs; he was not yet an overt Marxist
In 1951, he ran for a seat in the Cuban House of Representatives as a member of the reformist Ortodoxo Party
but General Batista seized power in a bloodless coup d’etat before the election could be held
Various groups formed to oppose Batista’s dictatorship
Castro led some 160 rebels in an attack on the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba–Cuba’s second largest military base
Castro hoped to seize weapons and announce his revolution from the base radio station
and more than half his men were captured or killed
Castro was himself arrested and put on trial for conspiring to overthrow the Cuban government
he argued that he and his rebels were fighting to restore democracy to Cuba
but he was nonetheless found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in prison
Two years later, Batista felt confident enough in his power that he granted a general amnesty for all political prisoners, including Castro. Castro then went with his brother Raul to Mexico
and they organized the revolutionary 26th of July Movement
enlisting recruits and joining up with Ernesto “Che” Guevara
Castro and 81 armed men landed on the Cuban coast
All of them were killed or captured except for Castro
who retreated into the Sierra Maestra mountain range to wage a guerrilla war against the Batista government
They were joined by revolutionary volunteers from all over Cuba and won a series of victories over Batista’s demoralized army
while Batista received aid from the United States
which bombed suspected revolutionary positions
By mid-1958, a number of other Cuban groups were also opposing Batista, and the United States ended military aid to his regime. In December, the 26th of July forces under Che Guevara attacked the city of Santa Clara
Batista fled for the Dominican Republic on January 1
who had fewer than 1,000 men left at the time
took control of the Cuban government’s 30,000-man army
The other rebel leaders lacked the popular support the young and charismatic Castro enjoyed
and on February 16 he was sworn in as prime minister
The United States initially recognized the new Cuban dictator but withdrew its support after Castro launched a program of agrarian reform
Many of Cuba’s wealthier citizens fled to the United States
where they joined the CIA in its efforts to overthrow Castro’s regime

"The ties between Russia and Cuba are indestructible
and we will give them continuity," said President Diaz-Canel
Author: Alina Perera Robbio | internet@granma.cu
when in spite of very different landscapes and customs
the souls of two nations seek and understand each other in an admirable way
it can be said that we are facing a twinning
a closeness that cannot be diminished by any mishap
that Cuba and Russia are giving each other
two homelands that in decades of relations have lived a very rich common history. It is worth remembering now November 22
It was three o'clock in the afternoon and the temperature was almost ten degrees below zero in the Sokol neighborhood in Moscow
when the monument dedicated to Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz was inaugurated
and where dignitaries Vladimir Putin and Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez met.Outdoors
but in Sokol the warmth of feelings forced to be awake and attentive: "The ties between Russia and Cuba are indestructible
expressed President Diaz-Canel; and he also assured that the Eurasian nation "knows that it will be able to continue counting on Cuba."Everything became shocking when
History emerged with its dazzling transcendence
He was no longer alive and yet the results of his robust seeds of friendship provoked admiration.Fidel
his metallic figure -looking forward and dressed in his combatant suit- worked the magic of the confluence of two statesmen
The host was the first to speak: "We are gathered here
in the square that bears the name of Fidel Castro
to inaugurate a monument to this outstanding public and political personality
the founder of the modern Cuban State".The President said that "Fidel Castro dedicated his entire life to the struggle for the triumph of ideas of good
for social equality"; that "he is rightly considered one of the most brilliant and charismatic leaders of the 20th century"
as the symbol of an entire epoch.Putin even recalled "a famous Soviet song: Cuba
to emphasize the affection that the island inspires in the Eurasian country
And he went on with magnificent definitions
such as the one according to which Fidel possessed powerful energy and will that "attracted and continue to attract like a magnet".The Russian-Cuban friendship bequeathed by Fidel Castro is the common wealth of our peoples
he affirmed; and enunciated with emphasis: "Together we will continue to strengthen our alliance
President Díaz-Canel recalled that the figure of Fidel Castro "is intimately linked to the friendship that for more than 60 years has been forged between our two peoples and governments"
He referred to the admiration that the Commander-in-Chief felt for that nation that knew how to take human beings to the cosmos
and that showed an immense capacity for sacrifice when confronting fascist forces. He recalled the beautiful words written on behalf of the Russian people by President Vladimir Putin upon Fidel's death: Fidel Castro was a sincere friend on whom Russia could rely
and he made an enormous contribution to the formation and development of Russian-Cuban relations
to the close strategic cooperation in all fields. There are many beautiful examples that demonstrate the powerful magnet that unites the two countries
In that visit of the Cuban leader to Russia
another transcendental meeting took place: the dignitary was received by His Holiness Kirill
an unforgettable gesture took place: Díaz-Canel reiterated to his important host "our eternal gratitude for the proposal you made for the historic meeting with Pope Francis in Cuba in February 2016".Thanks to that proposal by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia
the largest of the Antilles became a scenario of reconciliation
thanks to the meeting of the highest figures of the two churches
a millenary disagreement was overcome. His Holiness Kirill said in that November: "We Christians know that strength is in the truth
and that Cuba continues its independent and sovereign existence
confirms it".Such a "beautiful history of relations..."
In such terms President Diaz-Canel Bermúdez has referred to the friendship between Cuba and Russia
He has even spoken about the way in which those ties have been strengthened
which have reached the most diverse spheres and "have gone through political and economic-commercial relations
it is so beautiful - said the President - that it can captivate young people; and what better luck than to captivate young people - he proposed - so that they feel responsible for making these relations grow and give continuity to them. The 65th anniversary of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the then Soviet Union will be celebrated this May 8
The nascent Revolution and the first socialist state on the planet resumed ties
interrupted in 1952 by the dictator Fulgencio Batista
and began together the path marked by admiration
as well as an undoubted priority given by both governments
It is a friendship that understands a lot about resistance
and also about love for what is worthy. The fraternal ties overcame the disintegration of the Soviet Union and received a new impulse after the arrival of Vladimir Putin to the highest office of the Eurasian giant
The last few years have witnessed the growth and diversification of bilateral relations
The visits to Russia by Army General Raúl Castro Ruz
in his capacity as President of the Councils of State and Ministers
the constant exchange of delegations at the highest level and cooperation in areas such as energy
biotechnology and the pharmaceutical industry
confirm this.A moment of particular significance in the ties was the entry of Cuba -on December 11
and as an observer state- to the Eurasian Economic Union
an important space that brings together several of the nations that were part of the former USSR.Bilateral ties between the largest of the Antilles and Russia are significant for Cuba's Economic and Social Development Plan until 2030
provide opportunities for Russian companies.This
Miguel Díaz-Canel's fifth visit to the Eurasian nation as a dignitary
is part of the joint efforts to continue consolidating the high level of political-diplomatic dialogue
the bonds of friendship between both peoples
to pay tribute to the fallen in the Great Patriotic War -on the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory-
as well as the purpose of raising economic
financial and cooperation relations to the excellent level of political and diplomatic ties.On that cold November afternoon in 2022
when the monument to the Commander-in-Chief was inaugurated
the President of the Russian Federation told citizens of his nation and Cubans present at the ceremony that he had the good fortune to meet Fidel repeatedly
to have long talks with him -the last one in July 2014-
he was "impressed by his encyclopedic knowledge
and his deep friendship with the Eurasian nation
which he visited for the first time in 1963
and to which he went "at any time: in summer
with or without snow".It seems that those long talks have not come to an end
both on a snowy night and on a morning of burning sun
both the heroic Caribbean Island and the immense Russia find their best voice and disposition
The demand for the exclusion of Cuba from the arbitrary list was also evident in the session of the Standing Committee
recently stressed that his country is cooperating with Cuban authorities to support the development of renewable energies in the Caribbean nation

Castro, 41, was the sole person killed aboard a Clearwater ferry that was plowed from behind by another boater
No one has been arrested in the wake of the crash, described as a maritime hit-and-run in early accounts by police. Castro’s family doesn’t understand why.
“I want this guy to pay for what he did, for what we’re going through right now,” said Castro’s sister, Sandy Todd. “My family is destroyed.”
Investigators search the wreckage of the Clearwater Ferry in Clearwater Harbor, near the Clearwater Memorial Causeway Bridge, on Sunday after a crash that caused multiple injuries and one death. [ DOUGLAS R. CLIFFORD | Times ]Todd said she and her brother emigrated from Peru about 20 years ago, when Castro was 18. As his older sister, she was protective of him.
Family was important to Castro even back then. After the births of his two daughters, they became his entire life, Todd said.
Telling the girls — Ivory, 8, and Jolene, 3 — that their father was gone devastated them, said their mother, Jenny Hernandez.
Jolene is too young to understand what’s happening, she said, but her older sister is distraught.
“She’s just crying for her dad,” Hernandez, 27, said. “She was just in shock. She couldn’t believe that there was an accident and that he was the only one that didn’t survive.”
Castro took his daughters everywhere, the family said. After school each day, he would bring them to the YMCA, where he would work out and they would play with the other kids. He often took the girls to a nearby park, the public pool and Chuck E. Cheese.
At home, Castro would dance and sing to salsa music with the girls.
“He dedicated his life to just being the best father to them,” Hernandez said.
Castro didn’t like the beach, the water or the hot Florida sun. So family members were surprised to learn he had been aboard the ferry, touted as a safer alternative to busy roads and highways.
The family’s grief mixed with outrage as more details about the collision surfaced this week. Todd said it was difficult to watch video of the crash, which circulated on social media before Clearwater police released an edited version Monday.
The time-stamped video recorded by a city web camera at Coachman Park shows the boat crashing into the back of the ferry at 8:40 p.m. It then pulled away from the ferry and remained in the area as the ferry appeared to drift.

a tourist cruise ship that had been heading north when the crash happened
pulled close and shone a spotlight on the ferry
The blue boat that had hit the ferry circled around and pulled closer to the ferry as it drifted into shallower water near the south side of the Clearwater Causeway
the cruise ship’s crew called the Coast Guard and scanned the water for people needing rescue
many people on the ferry had made it to a nearby sandbar after another boat had nudged the vessel toward shallower waters
Leogrande listened from the shore as his crew described the scene over the radio
He couldn’t tell whether the boat that had pushed the ferry to safety was the same one responsible for the crash
Investigators couldn’t yet answer that question either
“If it was another person nearby … they’re heroes," Leogrande said
at least that shows you that they thought about it a minute before they took off.”
came into camera view as they crossed the causeway on the way to the scene
the boat that officials say was operated by Knight began to slowly motor away from the scene
heading south out of the camera’s view at 8:53 p.m
Video that appears to have been shot by a bystander from atop the causeway and posted to Facebook showed the blue boat backing away from the ferry as the two vessels are near the shoreline
and more emergency vehicles were pulling up
Investigators found the boat 3½ miles away at the Belleair boat ramp
Wildlife officials said “approximately six passengers” were on board the boat
but they haven’t released their identities
The agency is working with the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney’s Office to determine if the incident fits the legal definition of a hit-and-run
State Attorney Bruce Bartlett declined to comment on the case
Jeff Knight is seen on the phone while sitting in a boat that collided with the Clearwater Ferry on Sunday
He has been arrested three times on charges of driving while impaired
He pleaded no contest each time and received probation and fines
In 2012, Knight was on his yacht, Pure Knight Life, in the waters off the Renaissance Vinoy Resort with a group of friends after a night of partying, police said, when one of them fell off the boat. The man hit his head on the way down and drowned
The Medical Examiner’s Office found the man had alcohol and cocaine in his system
Knight’s prior record aroused the family’s suspicions
“This is a rich businessman that seems like he could do whatever he wants,” said Castro’s brother-in-law
Knight’s attorney, J. Kevin Hayslett, sent a letter to investigators on Tuesday that says Knight did not commit a hit-and-run
The letter states that Knight had someone on board call 911 after the crash and that he stayed on scene and offered help until first responders arrived
The letter says Knight left the scene because his boat was taking on water and he feared it might sink
The letter also suggests that the ferry was not properly lit and that the crew and passengers were distracted by dolphins just before the crash
A statement posted to social media by Jannus Live on Tuesday referred to the crash as an “accident” and asked that “judgment be reserved” until the investigation is completed
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims
their families and all those impacted during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement said
worked as a clerk at its Tampa distribution center
“The Postal Service is deeply saddened by the loss of our postal family member
Our sincere condolences and thoughts go out to his family
friends and co-workers,” a spokesperson wrote in an emailed statement
“If we could raise a lot of money, we’d like to pay for the girls’ college,” Rodriguez said. “They’ve lost the only breadwinner in their family. Who’s going to take care of those kids for the rest of their lives?”

Just one day after taking the oath of office and saying that he was ready to extend his hand to his colleagues and work together “not as factions divided by yesterday’s campaign
but as neighbors united in tomorrow’s purpose,” re-elected Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago lashed out at Commissioner Melissa Castro at the Carnaval de Barranquilla event in downtown Coral Gables
He called her a “venomous snake” in front of several dignitaries and city staffers
refused to take a photograph with her and told others present that she was “bad news,” Castro told Political Cortadito late Saturday

“He said he was going to ruin my life, that he was going to make sure I’m not elected in two years, that he’s going to get me out,” a shaken Castro said, shortly after she posted this video on her Instagram story
“I am walking out of the Carnaval de Barranquilla festivities, where they called me to say a few words because I am the first Colombian commissioner in the last 100 years, and I am in disbelief right now at the disrespect and humiliation that Vince Lago has done to me in front of my child
right next to my child.” Castro says breathlessly
as she walks away from the event at Ponce Circle Park
wearing a team shirt from La Seleccion Colombia
goes on the camera and testifies that Lago called Castro a snake
a venomous snake,” the 8-year-old corrects himself
“He wouldn’t take a picture with you and he pushed you aside,” he told his mother
Nice, Vinnie. Looks like you’re learning how to treat women from your friend
former Miami Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla
“It is not possible that he would treat a woman who has done nothing to him
he has attacked me,” Castro said in her Instagram post
Castro told Ladra that the Colombian consular officials were shocked and didn’t know what to do
They asked her to please go on stage separately from him
Lago did not return calls and texts to his phone
But sources who were there confirmed what happened
and one told Ladra the mayor has never before been to the event
The organizers will be lucky if he doesn’t take away the city’s sponsorship because organizers invited Castro to speak
This is not the first time that Lago takes digs at Castro and Ladra has wondered if he maybe has a secret crush on her
Read related: In Coral Gables, Melissa Castro calls out Vince Lago for his rudeness, disrespect

which include not referring to them at events and cutting them out of photos he posts on social media
One might think that winning his election and getting his slate elected
which gives Lago back the majority on the commission
Turns out he’s just as much a sore winner as he is a sore loser
And what can Castro do? People just re-elected this bully with 55% approval. The police chief is on his side. The city manager is on his side, having sent an email to residents five days before the election to say how great the city was doing
She was so hopeful at the swearing-in ceremony
“These past two years have been rocky
but I’m pretty sure that moving forward we will find civility
one day before she was “disrespected and humiliated” at Ponce Circle Park
I’m looking forward to great days again.”
Ladra is pretty sure that she doesn’t feel that way now
In an email late Saturday to Police Chief Ed Hudak
Castro said “his behavior was not only abusive but also a blatant attempt intimidate me into quitting
Despite my telling him that my child was present
She seems to ask Hudak for police protection and makes a chilling statement: “Let me know how to document this please
and if anything happens to me after this email… let it be known that he is to blame
“I am a woman and a harmless public servant who deserves respect and a safe environment
This tarnishes the image of Coral Gables and creates a hostile environment for public officials,” Castro wrote
“There were numerous witnesses to this outburst and his behavior demonstrates a pater of bullying and vindictiveness
including his threats to ruin my life and remove me from my position over the next two years
She said that Economic Development Director Belkis Perez and International Business Development Coordinator Leticia Perez witnessed the confrontation
“though they might be too intimidated to speak up given the mayor’s known vindictive nature
“What’s most alarming is that the mayor felt emboldened to humiliate and disrespect me in front of numerous people
Crossing that line shows he has no scruples and is unhinged
I fear for my safety and what he might do next,” Castro wrote
requesting “immediate measures to ensure my safety at future public events and that the mayor be held accountable for his actions
This kind of behavior cannot continue.”
Ladra is afraid that this type of behavior is just getting started

American reporters adored him—his tales of the days spent fighting a guerrilla war in Cuba
Castro accepted an invitation from the American Society of Newspaper Editors to visit the U.S

Castro met with Vice President Richard Nixon
Nixon hoped that his talk would push Castro “in the right direction,” and away from any radical policies
but he came away from his discussion full of doubt about the possibility of reorienting Castro’s thinking
Nixon concluded that Castro was “either incredibly naive about communism or under communist discipline—my guess is the former.”

PHOENIX — Governor Katie Hobbs on Monday said her administration is taking steps after the arrest of a now-fired state worker on human smuggling charges
Border Patrol agents arrested Joshua Castro
a produce inspector for the Arizona Department of Agriculture
“Action has been taken within the department to ensure that this is not a more widespread issue
and that things are in place to ensure that employees have the training that they need to recognize if this is something that's happening,” she said
Hobbs also said her administration would cooperate with any criminal investigation of Castro
the Department of Agriculture said it strongly condemns Castro’s actions
“Although this took place outside of work hours in the employee's personal vehicle and away from work
AZDA has taken proactive steps to deter this unacceptable behavior,” department spokesperson Rachel Andrews said
The department is reviewing policies and procedures
adding that “will include mandatory training for supervisors and employees” on signs of smuggling to watch for and how to report concerns
who leads the Senate panel that vets the governor’s agency directors
criticized Hobbs’ handling of the incident
“Hobbs’ response that she will implement new employee trainings to ensure this doesn’t happen again is clownish and laughable on its face,” he said
“If her employees need to be trained that human smuggling is against the law
then Hobbs’ administration is even more dysfunctional and chaotic than everyone thought.”
Border Patrol agents in Nogales found two Mexican citizens in the U.S
without authorization in the back seat of Castro’s car
His vehicle had been “previously identified as a vehicle that may be used for smuggling,” authorities wrote
and agents stopped the car when they noticed two passengers
Castro told the agents the two men in his car had asked for a ride
The passengers told Border Patrol they were Mexican citizens who had paid to be smuggled into the United States and said they were instructed to wait to be picked up near a house
Arizona Department of Agriculture Director Paul Brierley is still awaiting a Senate confirmation vote
Hoffman’s panel narrowly advanced his nomination earlier this month
and the senator told ABC15 in a statement Monday that he and his colleagues have a number of concerns about Brierley
“The fact that one of his own employees was engaged in the human smuggling of illegal aliens into our country while wearing his official department uniform is certainly one of those concerns and highlights the very troubling mismanagement that seems to be occurring within the AZDA,” he said
who voted against moving Brierley’s nomination forward
criticized Brierley’s negative comments on social media about President Donald Trump in 2020 during the April 3 hearing and said Brierley’s request for support during the nomination process from groups he regulates shows “a lack of judgment.”
All nominees must clear the Senate Committee on Director Nominations before getting a confirmation vote
Hobbs said she is frustrated with Hoffman’s leadership of the panel
saying he is “holding director nominations hostage over his political agenda.”
"And I think the actions taken since this incident should be considered as addressing the situation,” Hobbs added

PALM HARBOR — Family meant everything to Jose Castro
But now those young girls are without a father
and Sandy is planning a funeral for her brother
"My family is coming [from] all over to be the last time with my brother
The post office worker from Palm Harbor was returning from a day off at the beach
He was one of 44 people on the Clearwater Ferry when investigators say a boat captained by Jeff Knight slammed into them
Florida Fish and Wildlife towed the mangled ferry away as the investigation into the crash continues
FWC says Knight's boat left the scene after the crash and went to the Belleair Boat Ramp
Castro's family reached out to ABC Action News in part because they are angry that no charges have been filed
He's going to be here killing one person today that was my brother
Can be another family member suffering while we are suffering today
Records show Knight was charged in a 2019 boating accident where he crashed into a pontoon boat
And while the charges were later dismissed
Knight was also sued in 2012 after a friend died after slipping off Knight's yacht
Knight's attorney provided a letter that they had sent to FWC requesting "the preservation of evidence."
The concert venue released a statement asking that “judgment be reserved” while authorities investigate what happened
they say they will miss his smile and positive vibe
"If you met Jose one time in your life my brother was always the person that was the happiest man in this world,” Todd said
Joshua Castro is facing two federal charges: one felony and one misdemeanor. Further details of the arrest were laid out in a complaint filed two weeks ago by the U.S. District Attorney of Arizona
On April 9, Border Patrol agents in Nogales spotted a black Chevrolet Impala quickly leaving a known smuggling route and getting onto Interstate 19, driving a certain way to see if law enforcement was around. The next evening, agents saw the same sedan in the area of Hereford Drive and International Street before losing sight of it
the agents saw the same sedan returning the way it came
but now with two passengers in the backseat
Agents followed the car onto the interstate
Castro said the two men had asked for a ride and he didn’t know them
But the agents soon determined the two men were Mexican citizens who were in the U.S
One of the men told agents he paid 150,000 Mexican pesos (approximately $7,600 U.S
He said he illegally crossed the border and hid until he was told to walk to an area near a red house and look for a black car that would pick him up
The other man told agents he was going to pay $12,000 to be smuggled into the U.S
and provided a similar account of how he crossed into the country and the directions he followed
While Castro was not on duty at the time of his arrest
according to state officials briefed on the incident
the governor’s office issued the following statement:
“The governor strongly condemns the actions of this former employee
The Department of Agriculture took swift action
terminating the individual from their position immediately
Although this took place outside of work hours in the employee’s personal vehicle and away from work
AZDA has taken proactive steps to deter this unacceptable behavior
Policies and procedures are being reviewed
and will include mandatory training for supervisors and employees to include information from CBP on signs to watch for and how to report concerns.”
The situation puts Gov. Hobbs’ pick to run the AZDA in jeopardy. That nominee is Paul Brierley
who’s currently leading the agency as its acting director
Earlier this month, Brierley narrowly passed confirmation in the Senate Committee on Director Nominations (DINO)
The Republican-led committee voiced concern about Brierley’s years-old social media posts criticizing President Donald Trump
The full Senate still needs to confirm the acting director
Sen. Jake Hoffman
is the chairman of the DINO committee who voted against Brierley in the committee earlier this month
Hoffman said the arrest of an AZDA employee on human smuggling charges will complicate Brierley’s full confirmation
Hoffman later released the statement below:
“There are no words to adequately describe the obscene mismanagement occurring within Hobbs’ state government
It’s no wonder Hobbs vetoes every piece of meaningful border security legislation when on her watch her own state employee is being arrested and prosecuted for the human smuggling of illegal aliens
From cronyism to nepotism and pay-to-play to human smuggling
Katie Hobbs’ tenure as governor is proving to be one of the darkest periods in state history
the Nominations Committee and Senate Republicans had serious doubts about him already
this profound lack of management certainly won’t strengthen his case before the full senate."

In December 1961, Castro made clear what most U.S. officials already believed. In a televised address on December 2, Castro declared, “I am a Marxist-Leninist and shall be one until the end of my life.” He went on to state that, “Marxism or scientific socialism has become the revolutionary movement of the working class.” He also noted that communism would be the dominant force in Cuban politics: “There cannot be three or four movements.”
Some questioned Castro’s dedication to the communist cause, believing that his announcement was simply a stunt to get more Soviet assistance. Castro, however, never deviated from his declared principles, and went on to become one of the world’s longest-ruling heads of state. In late July 2006, an unwell Fidel Castro temporarily ceded power to his younger brother Raul. Fidel Castro officially stepped down in February 2008. Castro died on November 25, 2016, at 90.

Inside Castro's colorful collectionMarch 20th
Willi Castro sported a bright green glove for the Twins’ St
Patrick’s Day game against the Pirates in Bradenton on Monday
he wasn’t the only Twin rocking green -- the club wore green hats
But he was the only one who had to sort through 12 gloves to find the green one
It’s not a surprise that Castro has more than one or two gloves in his locker
He has appeared at six defensive positions
And manager Rocco Baldelli hasn’t ruled out that he could also play some first
which would leave only catcher as uncharted territory for the versatile Castro
I’ve got a couple that are ready to go for games,” Castro said
“There’s a couple that I’m breaking in -- like the green one
But I’ve got some better ones that are ready for games
I’m trying to loosen all of them up so I have them prepared for any time
but I just have them there so I can switch them every day.”
What you might find surprising is it’s not a glove for every position
He said there’s not necessarily any particular story to the colors
“I just think I was trying to switch it up a little this year
He married Petra (Trevino) Castro and she preceded him in death
Pablo was known for his incredible handiwork
spending 33 years as a carpenter at Bowling Green State University
He was especially proud of all his children's and grandchildren's accomplishments

D-Black has disclosed that late musician Castro originally recorded his hit song “Seihor” as a ‘diss’ track to Charterhouse
D-Black in an interview with Blac Volta revealed that Castro turned to music as a way to express his concerns when he felt he was not given the award he thought he deserved at the Ghana Music Awards Scheme
“Me Nam Na Me Tete,’ was initially a ‘diss song’ to Charterhouse
there was an award that he thought he was going to win
and everybody is talking about it,” D-Black revealed
He further explained that the lyrics of the song is a reflection of the public sentiments surrounding his loss
“That’s where the ‘Me Nam Na Me Tete’ came about
he’s hearing that people are talking about the award that Charterhouse didn’t give him,” he added
Castro initially requested him to record a verse on the song that echoed the original “diss” tone
But D-Black says he declined since he didn’t personally have a problem with the organizers of the Awrads
a little ‘diss’ to Charterhouse and then he told me to freestyle on the song too
but I told him I can’t do that because they didn’t do nothing to me,” D-Black said
D-Black further emphasised that after he recorded his verse
He took out the ‘diss’ portion from the song and reposition it as a commercial release
The next day he came and he said that’s his next single
Then he took out the diss to Charterhouse and filled it with something else,” D-Black recounted
