The Councilor pointed out that "unfortunately the long-awaited rains have also been accompanied by hail and torrential rainfall which have had a severe impact on the course of the horticultural campaign "Once we have completed the final damage assessment the Government of the Region of Murcia will start the procedures for the Government of Spain to declare the affected areas a disaster area This will allow agricultural producers and livestock farmers to receive aid that should alleviate the situation they are going through," says Rubira the rains have hit 470 hectares of apricots There are damages on 421 hectares of chards the most affected municipalities have been Albudeite with losses worth a total of 4,038,869 euros the municipalities of Calasparra and Cieza have been affected specifically 4,860 hectares devoted to apricots Source: www.carm.es Frontpage photo: © Mike Ricci | Dreamstime FreshPublishers © 2005-2025 HortiDaily.com This website is using a security service to has a new brother-sister duo representing a new species to its grounds: Stella and Cieza.  Stella and Cieza are maned wolves — a declining South American canine species They will play vital roles in protecting the future of maned wolves from their new habitat.  the almost 3-year-old sister and brother pair have settled into their new home quite well Guests to the park can now view them in their custom-designed exhibit Maned wolves are the largest canine species in South America standing close to 3 feet tall at the shoulder and weighing up to 60 pounds according to Gulf Breeze Zoo officials.  genetic studies show that the maned wolf is a distinct species It is the only species in the genus Chrysocyon meaning "golden dog.” Their impressive red coat and stilt-like legs are adaptations for living in central South America's grasslands and scrub forest from Brazil to the dry-shrub forests of Paraguay and northern Argentina maned wolves are primarily solitary in the wild although a breeding pair usually remains monogamous and shares the same territory Maned wolves are listed as near-threatened because of loss of habitat by encroaching human populations and poaching for their body parts believed to have medicinal healing powers Gulf Breeze Zoo continues to respond to species decline and is focused on preserving animal populations The addition of Stella and Cieza to the Gulf Breeze Zoo allows residents and visitors to the Florida Panhandle an opportunity to gain an appreciation for protecting this unique species A violent outburst by the young star V883 Orionis has given astronomers their first view of a water “snowline” in a protoplanetary disk – the transition point around the star where the temperature and pressure are low enough for water ice to form An abrupt increase in the brightness of the star “flash heated” the inner portion of the disk, pushing the water snowline out much farther than normal, enabling astronomers to image it with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) the water snowline would be much too close to the protostar to observe directly even with ALMA’s remarkable resolution heat from a young Sun-like star prevents water molecules from freezing within a radius of about three astronomical units (An astronomical unit – AU – is the average distance from the Earth to the Sun) water condenses to form a layer of ice on dust grains and other particles An abrupt and powerful increase in the brightness of V883 Orionis has pushed the water snowline out to approximately 40 AU (about 6 billion kilometers) a distance that corresponds roughly to the orbit of Pluto in our solar system Even though V883 Orionis is only 30 percent more massive than our Sun it is currently 400 times more luminous and much hotter thanks to its recent outburst triggered by material from the disk falling onto the surface of the star “The ALMA observations came as a surprise to us,” said Lucas Cieza an astronomer at Diego Portales University and lead author of a paper describing these results published in the journal Nature “Our observations were designed to image disk fragmentation which is one of the proposed mechanisms for the formation of giant planets as the disk is probably too warm to fragment despite its very large mass This illustrates well the transformational power of ALMA which delivers exciting results even if they are not the ones we were looking for.” “The distribution of water ice around a young star is fundamental to planet formation and even the development of life on Earth ALMA’s observation sheds important light on how and where this happens in protoplanetary disks when young planets are still forming,” said Zhaohuan Zhu “We now have direct evidence that a frosty region conducive to planet formation exists around other stars.” Water ice helps regulate the agglomeration of dust grains into larger and larger particles Astronomers believe that within the snowline the presence of ice allows for the rapid formation of snowballs and cometary bodies which facilitate the formation of massive gaseous planets such as Jupiter “Since water ice is more abundant than dust itself beyond the snowline planets can aggregate more solid material and form bigger and faster there giant planets like Jupiter and Saturn can form before the protoplanetary disk is gone,” noted Zhu The discovery that these outbursts may blast the water snow line to about 10 times its typical radius is very significant to the development of reliable planetary formation models Such outbursts are believed to be a stage in the evolution of most planetary systems so this may be the first observation of a common occurrence this direct observation from ALMA could contribute substantially to an improved understanding of how planets throughout the Universe form and evolve It also sheds light on how water ice may have been distributed in our own protoplanetary disk The star V883 Orionis is located approximately 1,350 light-years from Earth in the Orion Nebula Cluster ALMA was able to achieve a resolution of about 12 AU — enough to resolve the water snowline in this system but insufficient to do so around a typical young star The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is a facility of the National Science Foundation operated under cooperative agreement by Associated to mark the packing and labelling of the first peaches with the ‘PGI Melocotón de Cieza’ quality seal The Protected Geographical Indication label covers two peach varieties: Baby Gold 6 and Romea Production this year is projected to top 12,000 tonnes This is the first time the quality seal is being used nationally It will be rolled out in export markets once it has been certified by the European Union “Any consumer will be able to know as soon as they see the product that it is a peach recognised and distinguished for its quality and the sustainability of its production offering an extra guarantee to the markets,” Luengo commented during the visit The municipality of Cieza is home to the largest concentration of peach production in Europe covering an irrigated area of 5,861ha and producing around 180,000 tonnes per year Ohio — A 32-year-old woman was killed early Saturday morning in a car crash in Westlake The woman has been identified as Crystal Cieza Police say Cieza was driving a 2018 Ford Taurus on Detroit Road when the car veered off the road and hit a utility pole on the south side of the intersection Firefighters and police responded to the scene was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries but police said it appears alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash By Ken Croswell The water snow line of V883 Orionis’s protoplanetary disc is shown in orange The flare-up of a star near the Orion Nebula has revealed for the first time the icy boundary between small rocky worlds and their giant neighbours in a planet-making disc this snow line normally lies a little farther from a young star than Earth is from the sun So nobody had ever spotted one – until now Lucas Cieza at Diego Portales University in Santiago, Chile, and colleagues used the ALMA array of radio telescopes in Chile to observe a disc around the young star V883 Orionis They hoped to see signs of newborn planets they saw a ring around the star that was just the right temperature – 105 kelvin – for a snow line “It is the first detection of a water snow line,” Cieza says The team owe their success to the star itself which could only be seen through a telescope until late 1936 when it suddenly shone at least 100 times as brightly – enough to observe through binoculars The new light from V883 Orionis’s similar eruption vaporised so much water ice that the snow line is now 42 times farther out than Earth is from the sun Because water ice is critical to the birth of giant planets Cieza says these FU Orionis-like outbursts could affect how planets form Most young stars probably experience such outbursts so Cieza says future simulations of developing solar systems should include their effects Journal reference: Nature, DOI: 10.1038/nature18612 A regional church authority in Murcia said one of two buses bringing back 55 members of a religious group from a day trip in Madrid to the town of Bullas ran off the road late on Saturday and tumbled down a 15-metre dirt embankment The regional government reported that 23 passengers were still in hospital on Sunday and that police were investigating in causes of the crash writing: “I am deeply affected by the accident in Cieza.” Cieza has been occupied for more than 7,000 years and the Museo de Siyâsa contains artifacts excavated from sites throughout the municipality which amply illustrate the rich historical heritage of this municipality although its main exhibits focus around the former Moorish settlement of Medina Siyâsa The museum is located in a Modernist building which used to be the Casino in the old quarter of Cieza The main focus of the museum is Medina Siyâsa and the museum has a good collection of artifacts but pride of place goes to the reconstructions of two of the houses which have been excavated on the hill which lies above the modern town: this was the site of Siyâsa before the Christians founded modern Cieza below its Moorish neighbour after the Reconquista in the 13th century From these reconstructed houses it is possible to look out through the large windows at the site on the Monte del Castillo where they were originally located a clever juxtaposition of the new reconstruction and the original location which helps bring to life the appearance of the town a thousand years ago and understand more about how the original occupants of the houses would have lived The houses themselves contain arches and doorways which are typical of Nasrid and Almohad architecture and the distribution of all the rooms around a central patio is also characteristic of most Moorish dwellings of the Middle Ages House number 10 also contains a monumental Andalucían portico and decorative stonework The houses also give a clear idea of the manner in which food was stored and then cooked as well as helping to bring the ruins of the town above to life On the top floor are scale models of the old citadel and necropolis of Madina Siyâsa showing the infrastructures of both the part of the site which has been excavated and the whole settlement and the recommendation is to visit the museum before going to the actual site in order to gain an understanding of what the actual remains used to be before Siyâsa was abandoned On the walls around this model are various artifacts which have been excavated at the site of the old Moorish city Other areas of the museum contain information and exhibits relating to the prehistoric and proto-historic discoveries made in Cieza, including cave paintings, fossils, ceramics and tools. The first known human occupation of the area dates back 11,000 years in the Cueva de la Serreta of Los Almadenes El Búho and the Barranco de los Grajos and in the museum visitors can see photographs and drawings of the 21 sites where cave paintings have been found in the municipality of Cieza The Argaric and Iberian cultures are also well represented, and in the centuries before and after the birth of Christ various Roman villas are known to have been in charge of administering local agriculture in Cieza.( Click History of Cieza) The ground floor also contains an ethnographic display featuring many of the agricultural tools and items of machinery which were used for centuries in the fields of this part of the Ricote valley Guided tours can be arranged through the Cieza Tourist Office (telephone 968 453500 opening hours Monday to Friday 8.00 to 15.00) for groups during the week and for individuals at weekends These tours of the museum last approximately one hour and others are also available to the site of Medina Siyâsa itself the Cueva de la Serreta and the sights and monuments of the town centre of Cieza Click to contact the Tourist Office in Cieza The Tourist Information office in Cieza is centrally located in Cieza opposite the historical indoor market place which is an ideal location to buy fresh fruit and local produce whilst visiting the town Festivities to celebrate the Patron Saint’s day of Cieza take place annually in the last week of August a big week for the town with many activities and events to entertain both locals and visitors who visit the town specifically for these dates The origins of Cieza's San Bartolomé fair and festivities Cieza started life in its current format in the middle of the 13th century when Murcia came under the rule of Alfonso X el Sabio following the Christian Reconquista. Previously the settlement had been in the Moorish town Medina Siyâsa The church of the Patron Saint Bartolome was built during the first 20 years after the creation of the town and records show that the first fairs took place in the 14th century The devotion to San Bartolome dates back to the end of the 15th century and records from 1579 show that this devotion had  become established in the last quarter of this century The popularity of the saint continued to grow during the following two centuries Chapter XXIV of Monk Pascual Salmerón's book “la Historia de Cieza” describes the “miraculous sweating of the image of Saint Bartolomé whilst battling with a mighty cloud” The legend relates that on 25th August 1722 the people of Cieza were in the town square observing the patron saint’s day of Saint Bartolomé when a violent thunderstorm occurred and they were forced to take refuge in the church. The people prayed and asked their patron to protect them and were amazed to witness the image of the saint visibly sweating water 5 times before the storm subsided The monk recorded: ”how hard must the Saint have had to work to defend his devoted people” The fiestas in something resembling their present form began in the 19th century although at this time the fair was not part of them. The fair traditionally took place from 16th to 23rd August with a mostly commercial nature followed by the celebrations of Saint Bartolome on the 24th August At this point bull runs in the streets were very popular but in 1755 these were stopped by the Crown due to the number of accidents that regularly took place. It took 40 years of pressure from the townspeople before the monarch would agree to reinstate the custom the loclas claiming they deserved this privilege after a year of hard toil. Finally they were granted three bull runs during the San Bartolome festivities as long as they were not “bulls or cows of death.” the fair and festivities in honour of Saint Bartolomé have become one of the most important and popular in the Region of Murcia whilst at the same time ancient traditions have been resurrected. The traditional Misa Huertana (country mass) was started in 1984 in the Basílica de la Asunción and involves participants dressed in traditional regional dress making a floral and fruit offering to the patron the Hermandad de San Bartolomé (Brotherhood of Saint Bartolome) has organised the opening speeches and each year on 15th August they take place at the doors of the Basílica de la Asunción after the procession of the patron saint 1998 saw the introduction of the theatrical production of Crónica y Leyenda de una invasión Anunciada a play by Carmen Carrillo narrating the historical events which took place in Cieza on 7th April 1477 as well as the Asociación Cauce. The tradition of blessing the fields and orchards of Cieza by Saint Bartolome has also been restored in recent years One particular event has achieved international fame namely the Concurso Internacional de Lanzamiento de Huesos de Oliva (International Olive Spitting Competition) which attracts more and more visitors each year and has led the way for this contest to extend to other parts of Spain and abroad The Town Hall of Cieza it now has an advanced video surveillance within the area known as the Vega Alta del Segura and is directly connected with Madrid via rail and motorway surrounded by mountainous peaks: the Sierra de la Cabeza del Asno Throughout its history, Cieza has been dedicated to agriculture and today fruit growing is its principal economic activity producing more than 130 million kilos of peaches every year, making Cieza the biggest peach producing municipality in Europe. The agricultural richness of Cieza has attracted settlers from prehistory, and has several important caves containing pre-histric rock art, including the Cueva de la Serreta in the Cañón de Almadenes The Iberian-Roman epoch is represented by the settlement at Bolvax, the Argaric by Cerro de las Beatas, but the most impressive remains in Cieza are those of Medina Siyâsa a large scale Moorish settlement which reached its peak during the 11th and 12th centuries and was located high above the situation of the existing town in the Archaeological Museum two of the houses excavated have been rebuilt creating an intimate and tantalising glimpse into this fascinating culture The other major celebration is the Fiesta of the town’s patron saint, San Bartolomé, which takes place in the last week of August and is famous for its annual olive stone spitting championship to the South with Ricote and Mula and with Calasparra to the West This is right next to the watermill , the Molino de Teodoro, and there is parking in the carpark for the watermill.
