Neom was dealt a blow on Tuesday when its board announced that CEO Nadhmi al-Nasr had stepped down after six years in the role
an executive in the Saudi Public Investment Fund
Reports earlier this year suggested that The Line had been scaled back — claims denied by ministers
Yet even a far smaller-than-imagined version of the project would be the largest linear city ever built
The concept of linear living is "ambitious but hardly revolutionary," Anirban Adhya
a professor of architecture and urban design at Lawrence Technological University in Michigan
many urban planners looked to alternative city layouts to tackle booming populations
The Spanish architect Arturo Soria is widely credited with designing the first linear city
"La Ciudad Lineal," in 1882 on the outskirts of Madrid
renowned Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier offered another radical alternative with his "Ville Radieuse," a linear
The Soviet urbanist Mikhail Okhitovich was sent to a gulag in 1930 for his "economically crippling" proposal to transform the city of Magnitogorsk into eight ribbon-like strips converging on a factory
"It has been common for urban planners to argue for a new future as a reaction to what they claim to be an 'unsustainable' — existing situation of their time
The Line in Neom is no different," said Adhya
is the idea of building a dense metropolis in the shape of a line a good one
the benefits of linear cities include efficient public transport
they can easily extend as populations expand
Proposals for The Line echo many of these promises
Its website presents the city as a solution to mass urbanization and the climate crisis
depicting it as a sustainable carless utopia that will preserve 95% of the region's land
Neom's designers claim that all essential services will be accessible within five minutes
and nature will be just a two-minute walk away
AI-powered technology throughout the city will enhance sustainability and maximize residents' life expectancy
"There is no right shape for a city — they typically evolve over time
a partner at international architecture firm DIALOG
The Line's linear form would make it accessible and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources along its entire length
Though she said its goals may be exaggerated
Lovgreen believes the vision of The Line is admirable
"It challenges us to rethink urban design and discover new ways to make cities efficient
It could set a trailblazing example for how to use AI to improve sustainability and energy efficiency
something US urban planners should replicate
In "smaller chunks and pieces," the linear structure of The Line could work
While some practical sides of the structure have potential
the experts BI spoke to saw fundamental issues with the lived experience inside linear cities
"The Line could be a fascinating place to visit and experience
but I'm still unsure of whether humans are designed to live in such a rigid and prescriptive structure," Lovgreen said
The Line is formed of modules that can each house 80,000 people
able to move about through a horizontal and vertical transport system
"Compared to other urban designs like grid layout
human experience in a strictly linear urban development can lack interest and variation," explained Adhya
"Certain parts of the city could become too far and segregated."
The repetition of infrastructure and kit-of parts would be "bland and monotonous," lacking the unique character that other cities offer
the psychological impact of living in such a regimented environment may affect residents' well-being," she told BI
This type of structure is not only monotonous
professor of urban historical geography at Oxford Brookes University in the UK
"Linear cities are an extreme form of urban dispersal — community development and social cohesion still need centrality," Gold told BI
Another challenge in Neom's design is its over-reliance on technology and the public transport system
where multiple options are available if a specific connection or intersection is blocked
A linear city may not have this capability," explained Lovgreen
is "who would actually want to live in such a 'city'
map out a hi-tech utopian future but never engage with people as they really are
linear city schemes are best left as design exercises for third-year architectural students."

will transform part of the districts of Ciudad Lineal and Salamanca
Among the novelties that this 2025 brings to Madrid
the beginning of the works of Parque de Ventas: a project that will transform a part of the districts of Ciudad Lineal and Salamanca by the year 2027
according to the City Council of the capital
will improve the “integration and connection” between both districts
although the “what” is important
probably the most striking aspect in this case is the “how”
The platform to be built over the M-30 will be located some 300 meters south of the Ventas Bridge
will be 197 meters long and will generate a surface area of 16,370 m²
landscaped and recreational areas where 591 new trees and more than 48,800 shrubs will be planted
More specifically, the space will be equipped with more than 2,150 m² of meadows, children’s playgrounds
a small outdoor performance area with low bleachers
this action has three objectives: to rebalance territorially two districts separated by 16 lanes of the M-30 and to generate improvements both in public space and in the sustainability of the city
The work will cover a total area of more than 56,600 m² on both sides of the M-30
“will endure in time and in the memory of the people of Madrid”
A conversation on what makes a livable city

Madrid’s Ciudad Lineal neighborhood was designed around a central tramway | Compañía Madrileña de Urbanización
Decline and fall: Ciudad Lineal was initially successful
inspiring similar developments in the Soviet Union
but it ran into trouble during World War I
when supply shortages made it difficult to maintain the trams at the heart of the scheme
The Spanish Civil War and post-war migration to Madrid made it nearly impossible to retain the neighborhood’s layout
and the definitive end of the scheme came in the 1970s when Madrid decommissioned the tram at the heart of the project
Bartlett professor of urban planning at University College London
told me the reason linear city layouts have failed to take off is because they go against natural urban growth
“Most cities develop from the center outward
“You can impose a linear structure but keeping it in place requires an incredible amount of top-down control.”

Batty questioned strictly planning a city around a mode of transportation — be it Ciudad Lineal’s tram or the high-speed train line expected to move residents along The Line’s 170-kilometer length
“Rapid technological change is a reality in the present
Telecommunications means we no longer even have to be in the same space to interact now,” he said
“It can be risky to plan around transport options which may not be relevant later on.”
Will it happen? Hype aside, it’s not certain Saudi Arabia’s project will even happen. Failed schemes like Dubai’s man-maid archipelago in the shape of the world show that many of these expensive projects turn out to be pipe dreams
you can green the desert and build parts of the project,” said Batty
“Whether anyone will want to live there is another question altogether.”
N-Evere! In Evere, Mayor Ridouane Chahid said residents hadn’t been sufficiently consulted about changes and vowed not to adopt any new circulation plans
“We are not going to make things more difficult for the motorists in our own neighborhoods,” he insisted
Keep channels open: Brussels Mobility Minister Elke Van den Brandt lamented the reversals and told me revisions to the circulation plans based on “vandalism and intimidation” sent the wrong signal to the public
She added that the region was determined to continue investing in dialogue with residents and achieving its goal to “create a better
safer and healthier neighborhood for all.”

A Madrid mural honoring the lives and achievements of 15 pioneering women
US activist Rosa Parks and Mexican painter Frida Kahlo
has been saved from destruction after city councilors stepped in to thwart far-right attempts to have it removed
emblazoned with the slogan “Your ability doesn’t depend on your gender,” was commissioned by the local council in the neighborhood of Ciudad Lineal and painted on a sports center wall in 2018
Also included in the artwork are US tennis player Billie Jean King
veteran US civil rights campaigner and academic Angela Davis
Russian cosmonaut and politician Valentina Tereshkova and Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
the far-right Vox party introduced a motion to have the mural removed on the grounds that it featured a “political message,” and should be instead be replaced with one related to sport
The motion was supported by the conservative People’s Party (PP) and the center-right Citizens party
and the local council voted to replace the 15 women with a mural honoring male and female Paralympians
and triggered an online petition that attracted more than 55,000 signatures
the left-wing Mas Madrid party brought an urgent motion before the city council calling for the mural to be protected
The move succeeded thanks to the support of the Socialist party and Citizens party
who reversed their opposition and backed the motion
said that while she was not a fan of the mural
I don’t just govern for the people who voted for me
and respecting things you don’t like comes with being deputy mayor of the city as a whole.”
Vox accused the Citizens party of “a lack of loyalty” to its own members
while PP said that Villacis and her colleagues should have left the decision in the hands of the local council
said that it was delighted by the city council’s decision
“I think some people have had trouble understanding that the women featured in the neighborhood mural are not there for political reasons,” he said
“They’re all there because of their social contribution to equality
and because each and every one of them fought for proper equality and a fairer society.”
While the collective hoped the mural would remain where it was for many years
it was in favor of seeing another mural to commemorate Paralympians and their achievements

and a deep respect for the history of the Ciudad Lineal neighborhood
‘Alcalá Norte’ is more than a collection of eleven songs; it’s a manifesto exploring the social coordinates of the city and offering a new language to narrate the contemporary reality of this Madrid district
set to take the stage at the Festival Cruïlla 2025 on Saturday
has managed to craft a sonic synthesis evoking a wide range of influences
From the melancholic touch of Joy Division to the solemnity of heavy metal
all combined with the raw energy of punk and hints of bakalao
This rich sonic tapestry is evident in tracks like “Supermán” and “La Vida Cañón,” which blend post-punk laments with melodies akin to pop songs
while “420N” and “Los Chavales” reflect their post-punk roots with a distinctive bakalao twist

I want to receive information
A significant chunk of our towns and cities are made of roads
big settlements are congested and polluted
with these issues only set to get worse amid growing populations across the world
Saudi Arabia reckons it has a solution - bin all the roads and cars
an urban planning idea which goes back over 100 years
One was even built - Spain’s Ciudad Lineal
and was eventually swallowed up by Madrid’s expanding metropolitan area
has announced plans for something more ambitious/ridiculous called ‘The Line’
This extensive development will supposedly be built in the northwest chunk of the country designated the ‘Neom’ business area
Along the ‘spine’ would be a series of ‘city modules’ which would put most of the residents’ needs
Should the need arise to leave your ‘module’
you’d hop on a rapid transit system capable of reaching one end of The Line to the other in 20 minutes
See alsoAbt Unveils Audi Quattro Restomod With 523bhp Yep, all of this seems to hinge on a hyperloop
a fanciful idea that’s arguably just as dubious as The Line
It’s an interesting concept involving a sealed tube that gives a near-vacuum
enabling a maglev train to bomb down it without having to worry about air resistance
Small hyperloop test sections have been built
safety and technical feasibility that are yet to be answered
The Line’s proposed hyperloop would be a complicated one too
with conventionally-propelled metro and freight lines running alongside
there would be an “invisible layer of infrastructure” hidden under the city’s surface
The benefits of building everything in one long line don’t seem to have been clarified, either. As pointed out by Popular Mechanics and other publications
arranging the city in a big circle would cut the maximum journey time in half
The whole smells even more of vapourware than the average start-up supercar company
despite the insistence that construction is beginning imminently
It’s hard not to see The Line as anything other than an attempt for Saudi Arabia to improve its image by distracting from the country’s issues surrounding human rights and corruption
That said, The Neom development already has image problems of its own (aside from some of its laughably far-fetched details which include an artificial moon), with an estimated 20,000 members of the Huwaitat tribe facing eviction to make way for the crown prince’s $500 billion plans

When seasonal sales taste like nothing to you
outlets arrive to quench your thirst for discounts at any time of the year
Outlets in Madrid have multiplied in recent years
They have gone from being stores in large shopping malls on the outskirts to spaces specializing in a niche market
there is hardly any product that can’t be found at a great discount
you may have to rummage through a lot of items or come back often to find what you’re looking for
but it’s a factor that also adds to the excitement of the experience
This is not the only outlet that El Corte Inglés has in Madrid
but it is the most interesting if you are looking for fashion brands
The first floor is dedicated to accessories
lingerie and well-known and mid-priced brands
While on the top floor is the area they have called Gold
Here are concentrated all the luxury brands
on one side for men and the other for women
there are premium brands that can reach 70% discount or more on some specific dates
The wines of the most gastro outlet in Madrid are in perfect condition (they could not be sold otherwise)
there has simply been a lot of stock or they are from past vintages or stained bottles
It is a special store from the facade, which is intervened by the Salamanca illustrator Ricardo Cavolo
The red that stars in his paintings goes well with the red of the more than a thousand references on the shelves
The price of these bottles varies: there is no fixed standard (there are bottles with a discount of up to 50%) because it depends on where they come from: if it is their own distribution or from one of the wineries
Among the products that can be found in the MediaMarkt outlet there are from refrigerators
air conditioners or vacuum cleaners to computer products or mobility
And the outlet has also been extended to the web
although they do not ensure that there is the same as in store
There are discounts on electronics brands of up to 60% and in its store there are eight specialists to resolve all possible doubts that may arise to customers during the purchase process
the store has “an extensive range of services and solutions
among which the one-hour express repair service stands out”

A Mercadoria opened its first store in Madrid in 2022 and in a few months has a total of four. It specializes in Portuguese ceramics and sells by weight.
It sells both to individuals and to the hotel and catering trade and its items “will be destined to decorate your home, in a modern, different and affordable way”. In addition to dishes, there is cutlery, accessories and even fashion accessories such as handmade bags.
📍Location: AvenidaHumanes, 187 (Griñón, Madrid); Avenida Plaza de Toros, 16 (Carabanchel); Calle Argentina, 12 (Alcalá Henares) and Calle San Erasmo, 29 (Villaverde).
Factori Discount is Lidl’s outlet. Here they sell their products discounted to 50% or more. You can find clothes, toys, household items, DIY and even some of the chain’ s bestsellers such as its bread makers or kitchen robots (practically everything except food). The prices of some items can reach 50 cents, although you never know what you can find because it changes daily and the best bargains are soon sold out.

but on Fridays hundreds of people swirl from early morning at the doors of the store
To the craze of the outlets in Madrid we have to add the Bimbo one
The brand’s goal with the two stores is to reduce food waste to a minimum and to provide an outlet for excess stock
they sell products with a best-before date – it is advisable to check before buying anything – or with out-of-date packaging
The Bimbo universe covers every corner of the store and you can find from Eagle (peanuts with honey and salt) to Donettes (sometimes with offers of six packs for 3€) through different breads (such as sliced or wholemeal) or industrial pastries such as Pantera Rosa
Calle de Navarra (Leganés) and Calle Alberto Sánchez (Vicálvaro)
The average price of Action supermarkets does not exceed 2€ and more than 1,500 products in the supermarket are priced at less than 1 euro
very economical: to offer at very low prices 6,000 products in 14 different categories (from toys to handicrafts and household products
This is the commitment of the Action supermarket chain
which has a 1,000 square meter store in Alcalá de Henares

the shortest night of the year is also celebrated in different districts and towns of Madrid
In places like Alcobendas, Ciudad Lineal or Tres Cantos, in addition to bonfires, we will also find activities such as concerts, fireworks shows and symbolic rituals to welcome the summer solstice. So that you can choose where to enjoy the shortest night of the year, we have made a list with all the possible options.
From June 23 to 25, a program of varied activities will be held to kick off the summer in the Madrid district. The venues chosen for these festivities are the El Calero auditorium (Calle de José del Hierro, 3), El Flori park and the fairgrounds on Calle de los Derechos Humanos, each located in different neighborhoods of the district.
Attendees will be able to enjoy versions of the hits of the 80’s and 90’s performed by the Rayband orchestra. In addition, there will be rock concerts by bands such as Dame Veneno, No Idols and Los del zulo, among others. During the night of June 23-24, the bonfire of San Juan will be lit on the esplanade of the fairgrounds, although there will also be a symbolic bonfire in San Juan Bautista.
In Madrid, San Juan celebrations are experienced without a beach, especially in the Retiro district. Instead of waves and bonfires, there are magic shows, plays, children’s workshops and music. The festivities will take place from Friday, June 23 to Sunday, June 25.
The concert program will feature bands such as Los Rebeldes, Awa pa los Calvos and Ángulo Muerto, located in two stages: one in the northern part of the district (Narváez street) with tents and workshops, and another in Retiro south (Martin Luther King Park).
In the Madrid town of Leganés the traditional bonfire of San Juan will be held in the parking lot of Zarzaquemada station from 23:59H, followed by a fireworks display. In addition, as a novelty, there will be an exhibition of Human Statues on Saturday June 25 at two times: from 12:00h to 14:00h and from 19:30h to 21:30h. In this exhibition, the public will be able to vote through a web form for the best statues in categories such as statics, costumes and movement.
On Friday, June 23, during the Fiestas de San Juan 2023 in Alcalá de Henares, the Juan de Austria Park will be the stage for various activities. In the afternoon, there will be dance performances by local schools and children’s workshops. In addition, there will be live music with concerts by Vaho at 9:00 pm and La Habitación Roja at 10:00 pm. At midnight, the bonfire of San Juan will be burned, marking the beginning of summer.
In Alcobendas, a big San Juan night will be celebrated with the lighting of a bonfire and several special activities. Under the theme of Celtic Night, there will be workshops, entertainment, contests, performances, conxuro and an impressive queimada, in the purest Galician style.
From June 22 to 26, Tres Cantos celebrates its Fiestas Patronales de San Juan with a series of outstanding events, such as the concert by Ana Torroja and Chema Rivas. Among the must-see events are the bonfire, with its traditional queimada, and dance shows and fire jugglers. The fire will be lit at 00:00h in the Plaza de la Familia, followed by a fireworks display shortly after midnight.
