Consuegra Adds Sam Logic as Assistant Coach4/28/2025 9:35:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Racine native played at Iowa and professionally for 10 years
In her first season as the Marquette women’s head basketball coach, Cara Consuegra speaks openly about her five core values of the H.E.A.R.T for guiding the team, why she’s fiercely loyal and how she’s using her experience to build players to reach their highest potential
Although head basketball coach Cara Consuegra is new to the team
An assistant coach for the Marquette women’s basketball team from 2004-11
Consuegra met her husband while she was here.
Consuegra played for the University of Iowa women’s basketball team from 1997-2001
followed by a one-year stint in the WNBA with the former Utah Starzz
she worked for the Pennsylvania State University Lady Lions basketball team from 2001-04
Consuegra was most recently head coach of the Charlotte 49ers for the past 13 years.
Consuegra’s heart and drive is evident in the way she cares for and encourages her players.
I am not asking them to do anything that I have not done or been asked to do myself,” Consuegra says
“Getting to the highest level in any sport is extremely difficult
It requires extreme sacrifices and a focus that many aren’t willing to give
but the goal is to push them to be the best versions of themselves
That’s what we are doing every day.”
Consuegra gives a behind-the-scenes look at how lessons from her past are helping propel her players into the future
Tell me about your decision to come back to Marquette University
Clearly there’s a lot of history between you and Marquette.
It starts with our family ties — I met my husband here
Being back in this community means a lot to us because we are with our family
My seven years here as an assistant coach were some of the best years of my life
Marquette helped to mold me into the coach and leader that I am today
and this program has a special place in my heart
The opportunity to come back here and be the head coach was a dream come true for us.
Looking at the places in which you’ve spent time coaching
it’s evident that you don’t jump around from job to job
You’ve said that you’re fiercely loyal — where do you think that fierce loyalty comes from?
I believe the loyalty in me came from how and where I was raised
I come from a very tight knit family — my parents and brother always supported my dream to become a college basketball player
My parents specifically made a lot of sacrifices to help me achieve my dream
I am forever grateful for them and that example taught me what loyalty looks like.
You speak openly about your five specific core values of the H.E.A.R.T: Heart
Can you dive deeper into where those values came from and why they are so important to your coaching strategy.
When I was first hired as a head coach 14 years ago
it was important to me to create a women’s basketball program with a foundation built on values
I want to run a transformational program that challenges our student-athletes to grow as people and leaders
That is why I created “Play with H.E.A.R.T.” These are our five core values that guide our team and program.
What adjectives would you use to describe your team now and explain?
The words I would use to describe my team right now are “bought in” and “hungry.” Our women believe in our process to build a team and program that reflects Marquette values — a team that plays with H.E.A.R.T
and a team that reflects the blue-collar hard work that is in the fabric of our Milwaukee community
Our team is also hungry to grow and keep improving.
As a mentor to so many young female athletes
what did they teach you and how do you pass that knowledge along to your players now?
One of my biggest basketball mentors was my high school basketball coach
we won 53 straight games and back-to-back state championships
Coach Matthews was relentless in his pursuit toward excellence
and he instilled that in us players every day.
Do you have a mentor today who you still look up to or ask for guidance from?
A mentor who I still look to today is Lisa Bluder
the recently retired Iowa women’s basketball coach
I was fortunate enough to play with her my senior year at Iowa
she will answer my call and give me guidance on any topic that I need.
the popularity of women’s sports has soared
catapulting extremely talented players like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese into the spotlight
What are your thoughts on the trajectory of the sport from the 10,000-foot view?
Women’s basketball has always been a great game with very talented athletes
but it took those special players you mentioned to get more people to see it
we have a very special opportunity to continue to grow our game
we want to be very hands on with the community
We want people to come to our games because they are curious about women’s basketball
and we want them to stay because they love Marquette women’s basketball
The Al McGuire Center has an incredible environment
Fans can get up close and personal.
You have mentioned how you have a very young team at this point
when you have so many fresh faces it can be an opportunity to mold the players into what you want
What are your goals for the next few years with this team
where would you like to see your team performance-wise?
we want our women’s basketball program to be a program that is successful on and off the court
I know being successful is measured by wins and we want to win a lot
But we are equally concerned with the character and quality of women who are graduating from our program
We want to build young women who are ready to be leaders in the world and who can go out and “Be The Difference.”

The Marquette women's basketball team added a familiar name to its coaching staff
Head coach Cara Consuegra announced on April 28 that she has hired former Racine Case High School standout Sam Logic as an assistant
The 32-year-old Logic was a McDonald's All-American and the Miss Basketball winner in 2011.
"I am very excited to be back home and join the Marquette women's basketball family," Logic said in a statement
"I believe in Cara and her vision for her program and I cannot wait to get to campus and help build on the success of this team."
becoming a second-team All-American as a senior
Logic was the only player in NCAA history to have at least 1,500 career points
Logic was the 10th pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft and she played 27 games in one season with the Atlanta Dream and the San Antonio Stars. She also had several stops in foreign leagues
"We are excited to have Sam join our staff," Consuegra said
"Sam is someone I've known and respected for a long time
She is a high character individual who aligns with our program's core values
Her outstanding college experience and years of playing professionally will bring a unique perspective to our players and impact our program right away."
Skylar Forbes & Lee Volker earn All-Big East honors
With the Big East tournament set to start on Friday, the conference had to get the end of season awards for women’s basketball out the door on Thursday. The Big East coaches voted — although they couldn’t vote for themselves or their players — and lo and behold Marquette Golden Eagles’s Cara Consuegra was named Co-Coach of the Year
A post shared by BIG EAST Conference (@bigeast)
As you can see, Marquette’s head coach is sharing the award with UConn’s Geno Auriemma. Here’s how the league office wrote it up:
Auriemma was selected BIG EAST Co-Coach of the Year presented by Invesco QQQ for the 13th time after leading the Huskies to their 12th undefeated BIG EAST finish
The Huskies enter postseason play as the No
1 seed in the league’s tournament with a 28-3 overall mark and top five rankings in both national polls
earns the co-coach of the year nod after leading the Golden Eagles to the four seed in the BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Tournament
tied for the second-fastest road to 20 wins by a first-year head coach in program history
And here’s some extra details from the Marquette press release:
Consuegra guided Marquette to a 20-win regular season in her first year as head coach
The Golden Eagles finished with a 13-2 at the Al McGuire Center
tied for the best home record by a Marquette first-year head coach
tied for the second-fastest road to 20 wins by a first-year head coach in program history with Terri Mitchell
Consuegra was an assistant coach for Mitchell at Marquette from 2004-11
Consuegra becomes the fourth Marquette head coach to win conference coach of the year
Carolyn Kieger (BIG EAST 2018) and Megan Duffy (2020)
Consuegra also tied Mitchell for the most wins in February in her first year with six
She earned her fifth BIG EAST road win of the season on Saturday
the most conference road wins by a first-year head coach in program history
Let’s go live to the Marquette women’s basketball team meeting room to see the team’s reaction to finding out that Consuegra was tabbed as the best coach in the league this season
and Consuegra briefly talking to her team after the announcement is the third slide.)
A post shared by Marquette Women's Basketball (@marquettewbb)
By the way: Nice work by Athletic Director Mike Broeker to properly build up his little speech there to properly generate the pop from the team
I would like to talk about the fact that Consuegra is sharing the award with Auriemma for a second
The tie itself isn’t the interesting part
It’s the fact that it’s mathematically impossible to get the 11 coaches to split right down the middle
Consuegra and Auriemma each got five votes while one of the coaches — possibly Consuegra or Auriemma
as they didn’t have to vote for each other
— turned in the 11th vote for someone else
it would be votes for Seton Hall’s Tony Bozzella that fill in the gap
Auriemma’s votes are because his team was picked to be awesome and they have been
Consuegra’s votes are because her team was picked — by the coaches
— to finish 10th and they’re the #4 seed in the Big East tournament
Bozzella’s Pirates were picked to finish seventh in the conference in the preseason poll and finished third by a game in front of Marquette
making SHU and MU the only two teams in the league who were notably overachieving their preseason placement
Marquette had two women make it to the All-Big East teams
Sophomore forward Skylar Forbes is First Team All-Big East
while senior guard Lee Volker earned Second Team All-Big East honors
A post shared by BIG EAST Conference (@bigeast)
The Big East didn’t do much in the way of writing up the all-conference players
Skylar Forbes was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team
the ninth sophomore in program history to be named first team all-conference
Forbes led the Golden Eagles in scoring at 15.1 points per game and had six 20-point games
Ontario native scored in double-figures in 23-of-28 games and led the BIG EAST in blocks with 52 on the season
one away from tying the program’s single season record
Lee Volker was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team
The senior averaged career-bests 13.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game while starting in all 29 games during the regular season
Virginia native scored in double-figures in 20-of-29 games this season and had a career-high 24 points in the road win at Seton Hall
I don’t want to be dismissive of Lee Volker’s accomplishments here
as she had a hell of a final campaign in blue and gold
I have to note that the Big East announced a First Team with ELEVEN women on it
although it should have only been 10 but there was a tie in the voting somewhere
No one’s going to jump up and down about it.....
especially when four of the First Teamers were unanimous choices
It creates a clear and obvious “these are the REAL First Team honorees” situation
For more on the awards and the full rundown of each of the individual honorees like Most Improved and Sixth Woman, you can read the Big East press release right here

Jean Pierre Consuegra’s portfolio is brimming with some of the most exciting event posters we’ve seen in ages
It’s likely down to his interesting approach to material and techniques
and refusing to stick to one style or aesthetic
This creative restlessness has recently brought Jean to a new obsession: surveillance UI
“Some of that stuff is so beautiful and so mechanical and anti-design,” says Jean
scratches the itch in my brain in a great way.” One poster uses the airport X-ray scan of luggage as its foundation
while another mocks up a deli surveillance system
is how Jean is able to include information for the nights and gigs the posters promote without deviating from the surveillance aesthetic
making use of information windows and pop-ups
Jean’s journey into design was something of a happy accident
and raised in a suburb of Orlando before moving to LA and is now based in New York
Jean started his own record label in Brooklyn
but “I was too poor to afford a designer so I decided to make our designs myself and download Photoshop,” he says
“I would’ve never imagined downloading some program would have gotten me to where I am right now.” When it comes to influences
Jean often finds himself looking outside of the design world
to Chris Maggio’s photography and the music of Vegyn
both of which he sees as “depicting humanity in this fun and playful way while still having beauty at the forefront”
Jean does have some designer heroes though: “I absolutely love Tibor Kalman
even though he would’ve probably hated everything I’ve ever made.”

Consuegra Named BIG EAST Conference Co-Coach of the Year3/6/2025 10:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
News | Apr 18
rstingray@aspentimes.com
Going into law enforcement wasn’t always the plan for Linda Consuegra
But for the Aspen Police division chief of investigations and administration
the opportunity to serve this community is what keeps driving her over two decades after she switched career paths
Consuegra moved to Aspen when she was 12 years old where she completed both middle and high school
She returned to El Salvador for seven years
during which time she went to college and received a degree in psychology
She came back to Aspen with the intent of getting a master’s degree and working in schools as a counselor.
she decided to work for a bit before starting classes
She saw an article in the paper recruiting police officers
“That caught my attention,” she said
“Never in my life did I think I would get into law enforcement and be a police officer
It brought me back to my goal: to work with people and make a difference.”
Aspen Police Chief Kim Ferber said Consuegra reached a milestone this past year by attaining 25 years of service with the department
Linda has exemplified a compassionate and thoughtful law enforcement approach by helping to connect victims with available resources in the Roaring Fork Valley,” Ferber said.
she felt dedicated to serving this community after experiencing acceptance when she moved here the first time around.
“How lucky am I that I get to do this in the community that I grew up in?” she asked
“It was a community that welcomed me.”
she has a mission to give that back to everyone in town
She draws in part from her experience in El Salvador and the ways she witnessed how a police force should not work
She talked about being pulled over and asked for a bribe
or “mordida,” to get out of a ticket
“That’s where it hits my core,” Consuegra said
and I’m just not willing to submit to that
that’s one of the things that I’ve always kept in mind — being able to have good core values and be trusting
We don’t want to deter people who aren’t here legally to come to us and trust us.”
She also noted that it’s not just about accessibility
Domestic-violence disputes can be more accepted in other countries
is committed to making sure all members of the community know what’s considered a crime locally
“I’m so lucky we have a lot more Spanish speakers in our department now,” she said
Now we have more people that can be a resource and be able to provide service in every shift.”
her mission of accessibility and education is in full alignment with what she’s seen developed and carried out at Aspen Police
She primarily highlighted the focus on how to best serve the community and how to always be better as a department
“I think it speaks to that community policing concept
of really being a part of the community,” she said
“I don’t want to do this job anywhere else
How great is it for someone to show up on your worst day and to have empathy
She also oversees the hiring process for Aspen Police
where she is dedicated to finding people who align with the values of showing up for and serving community
She noted that many members of the force have come from customer service backgrounds for particularly that reason
“If you have done customer service anywhere else,” she said
“you will know how to do customer service in your uniform.”
and Consuegra encourages anyone who wants the opportunity to make a difference to apply
Those interested are invited to do a ride-along

Cara Consuegra's first game as a head coach in the Big East was a memorable one for the Marquette women's basketball coach.
Skylar Forbes scored 18 points as the Golden Eagles rolled past DePaul
Consuegra was hired by MU (9-3, 1-0 Big East) in April and had to scramble to fill her coaching staff and roster.
BOX SCORE: Marquette 78, DePaul 59
The Golden Eagles were picked by league coaches to finish 10th in the 11-team conference, but Consuegra's team showed feistiness in the non-conference
leading by double digits for almost the final 25 minutes
The Golden Eagles have won eight of nine meetings with DePaul
Halle Vice scored 17 points and tied a career-high with 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season
Up next for MU is Consuegra's first Big East matchup with national power Connecticut at the Al McGuire Center on Wednesday
WBB Adds Barnes and Herring in Fall Signing Period11/13/2024 2:45:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The Marquette women's basketball team scrambled to piece together a non-conference schedule after Cara Consuegra was hired as coach in April.
So, in a quirk of that process, the Golden Eagles played two road games and then had eight days off before making their home debut on Monday at the Al McGuire Center
MU rolled to an easy 92-37 victory over NCAA Division II Illinois-Springfield thanks to a breakout performance from Skylar Forbes and a raucous crowd of Milwaukee Public School kids
Consuegra was a MU assistant from 2004-11 before becoming head coach at Charlotte
so it was special to get her first win with the Golden Eagles at the Al McGuire Center
While the players engulfed her at halfcourt after the game
the experience was more special for Consuegra before the game
"Just the feeling of walking out to a familiar place," Consuegra said
"It was really hard for me to keep my composure
Just to be back at a place that I always would have loved to come back to."
The game was never in doubt after MU opened on a 21-2 run
The Golden Eagles finished strong with 23 unanswered points
"I challenged our kids in the third quarter," Consuegra said
"I thought we kind of let up a little bit and got a little complacent
"That was obviously (Illinois-Springfield's) best quarter
and I challenged them that ultimately this is about us and our journey and where we're trying to go and who we're trying to be
The score is just data for us at this point
I thought they responded really well to that."
Over the summer and preseason, it was easy to see that 6-foot-3 Skylar Forbes was poised for a breakthrough season.
She averaged 8.5 points per game over MU's season-opening losses at Central Florida and Illinois
but she really broke loose against Illinois-Springfield with 18 points and eight rebounds
"Coach really instills in us just doing what our role is," Forbes said
And I have incredible teammates who can help me get that ball."
Consuegra doesn't want to place too many expectations on Forbes this early in the season
especially after she played a small role last season
"She hasn't played a ton of meaningful basketball here," Consuegra said
"And so that's hard when you take a kid who is just a sophomore and put all these expectations on her
And her second game of her sophomore year we're playing the 23rd-ranked team in the country (Illinois)
we have to temper our expectations and allow her the grace and the time to get into her role."
MPS students really bring the noiseThe Golden Eagles' annual afternoon game with MPS students in the crowd always challenges the eardrums of anyone in attendance
Springfield-Illinois wasn't quite ready for the onslaught of high-pitched screams
particulary when the Prairie Stars were shooting free throws
we love them and we hope we can make the impact on them that anyone can
Olivia Porter knew what she was going to do
Cara Consuegra, Porter's coach at North Carolina-Charlotte, had just told the team that she was set to take over the women's basketball team at Marquette.
The point guard didn't need to think about it too much. She was going to follow Consuegra to Milwaukee.
"The school was cool and I love Coach Cara," Porter said
She trusted me and she gave me the keys when I couldn’t even look at a key
She has trust in me and I have trust in her
The Golden Eagles will open Consuegra's first season on Thursday at Central Florida
It's hard to predict how MU will look under a new coach
but Porter's familiarity with Consuegra can be instructive
Cara Consuegra spent 13 seasons as head coach at CharlotteConsuegra is a former MU assistant who went 225-169 in 13 seasons as head coach at Charlotte
Consuegra constantly mentions the term "gritty" when asked about what she wants her teams to look like
Porter sees that quality transferring from Charlotte to MU
"I think they should expect a team that’s going to play hard and give effort and give heart," Porter said
they’re going to feel us on the defensive side and it’s going to be a battle."
Consuegra knows that Porter was in a tough position as the player trying to help implement the coach's culture
"I think she’s done a tremendous job," Consuegra said
I think she’s started a little slow because I think she was concerned about fitting in
But once she felt comfortable and I pushed her a little bit
Helping a coach is a natural role for Porter
is a former head football coach at Memphis who is now the special teams coordinator at North Carolina
"You always know coaches’ kids," Consuegra said
She’s not a kid that you got to ask to get in the gym
She’s been in that environment her whole life."
Porter was raised in a competitive environment in which even chess matches with her brother
"We had a rule that we could never play chess because it always ended in a screaming match," Porter said
Porter played several sports before narrowing her focus on basketball when the family moved to North Carolina
"My dad coached with Les Miles at LSU and his wife played basketball collegiately
"She and my mom coached a YMCA team and that’s how I got interested initially."
Porter will be Marquette's point guardIt could take some time for MU to find its way under Consuegra
but Porter is here to keep everyone organized
so I’m the voice of the team," Porter said
"Especially me already knowing coach’s play style and what she kind of expects
But just making sure everybody’s composed and they run and get into the sets we need
Or getting people the ball at the right time and when they need to."
Consuegra is not worried about wins and losses early in the season
"Our first principle of our program is that we will focus on the process and stack good days," Consuegra said
"And that’s exactly what we’ve been talking to them about
Results can’t be that important to us right now because honestly I have no idea how good we’re going to be when that ball goes up
But she knows she's more comfortable with Porter on her roster
"We needed a true point guard that can run our team," Consuegra said
"I can tell you exactly right now we are a better team when Liv is on the court than when she’s not
they are more confident because they know Liv knows the system
Cara Consuegra looks very comfortable in the corner office at the Al McGuire Center
It seems like the work hasn't stopped since Consuegra was hired as the Marquette women's basketball coach in mid-April
but from the looks of her desk the 45-year-old has kept everything orderly
Consuegra was also highly organized and logical in how she attacked her new challenge
there was a half-empty roster and she needed to fill out her coaching staff
as evident by the notepad that contains a 'later list' of tasks that she still wants to accomplish
"It was extremely overwhelming," said Consuegra
who was an MU assistant under Terri Mitchell from 2004-11
I didn’t even have summer workouts my first year at Charlotte
but because I hadn’t taken over a program in 13 years
There is so much to do and there is not enough time
it was just trying to think about what is the thing that I can do right now that’s going to make the biggest difference
Or what is the thing right now that needs the most urgency
two is getting staff so I have people to help me
And then we just chipped away from there."
Consuegra had one clear message to her players and coaches
an important distinction to the head coach
we’re going to take all these pieces and we’re going to put it together and we’re going to build forward," Consuegra said
"Because rebuilding has the connotation of things aren’t good here
"And we don’t know how good we’re going to be
The important thing is that we take our pieces and we get ourselves all aligned in the direction that we want to go
If we can put those pieces together and build in the right way
then the outcomes will take care of themselves."
Skylar Forbes among the six returning players for Golden EaglesEarlier that morning
Consuegra intently stood at halfcourt of Kasten Gym
watching a small group of players do skill work
MU assistants Khadijah Rushdan and Deont'a McChester worked with guards Abbey Cracknell
director of player development Chaz Franklin watched Skylar Forbes work on post moves while assistant Chaia Huff did the same with Jada Bediako
Forbes and Cracknell are two of the six returning players
though the 6-foot-3 Forbes is the only one who has started a game at MU
Forbes' length and shooting ability will make her an important player as a sophomore
Mason and Bediako are among the six players Consuegra grabbed in the transfer portal
I had five days with the returners," Consuegra said
but more so just evaluating to determine what we had
And probably most importantly what we were lacking
"And I felt like we were very much lacking speed
let’s go out and let’s find whose available in the portal that fits our culture
has great character and can fit into that speed and quickness."
Consuegra talked in her introductory press conference about wanting a team that is disruptive defensively
"So much of right now is just teaching fundamentals
I think the next few weeks we’ll start to see what we really have."
one of the building blocks is teaching vocabulary
A benefit of working with these small groups – there will be another workout with the other players – is making sure everyone understands Consuegra's language
we’re learning what playing with heart means," Consuegra said
we have to teach our players what they mean
They need to be said over and over and over
So it becomes a natural part of their dialogue
"What makes it great having her is that the players
ask her a lot of questions," Consuegra said
She knows the culture I’m trying to instill
She’s been really good at just giving them some guidance
Helping them know a little more of what to expect
Consuegra needed a staff that could help implement her lessons
"Versus how can I create a staff that together we can be the best we can be
Who can I bring in that will bring different pieces to help us be the best and strongest staff we can be?"
McChester was the first hire after working with Consuegra at Charlotte
"He’s great with relationships with the kids," Consuegra said
Consuegra also decided to retain Rushdan, who spent last season as a MU assistant under Megan Duffy, now the head coach at Virginia Tech
Rushdan is a former Rutgers star who played one season in the WNBA
She wants to be at Marquette and she wanted to come learn from me."
Franklin was brought on as a development coach
the same position he held last season with the WNBA's Chicago Sky
Consuegra just completed her staff by hiring Smith
who was the head coach at Edgewood College
“I didn’t want to rush it," Consuegra said
I’m missing somebody that’s had a little bit of head-coaching experience
I’m 13 years in and have a sense certainly of what head coaching is
but just to have that little more experience on the bench
It's easy to follow the logic of Consuegra's moves
Now she has is learning how everything fits together
"I would say it’s probably still too early," she said
The first day of classes at any school is always a balance of glancing back at the past while trying to focus on the year ahead
"It's one of the great things about living and existing in a college environment
Because you get so much energy from the kids and from their excitement about starting school
it would be a shame if our excitement about the very beginning of the year was the peak
Guys were on the beach running with (assistant athletics director of applied sports science and performance) Todd (Smith) at 6:30 this morning
So we're excited and also getting to work."
"I think it's a multi-step process," Smart said
"What happens is you come to an event like this and you're just immediately smacked across the face with 'I was here with Dr
We had a welcome-back event for the student-athletes last night that he normally comes to and speaks at
"But actually that leads me to the second step
We all experience similar feelings because we all felt the same way about him
So I think the next step is coming together with others to empathize with one another and support one another
the last and most important step is to make sure whatever we do
whether it's our interactions with each other during the day
whether it's the way we go about our workouts or the way we go about our jobs
let's do those things in the spirit that Dr
then we are honoring him and we can turn an absolute tragedy into something positive in terms of having that in the front of our minds
And continue to make Marquette a better place as he wanted it to be."
Acting president Kimo Ah Yun was at Sendik's alongside the basketball coaches
"Obviously really excited about everybody being back on campus now
"So we'll have more opportunities to be around the student body
we just want to create excitement around our players
Have that opportunity for people to come out and see them play
They're working really hard and I think we're going to put out a product that people are going to enjoy."
It was a whirlwind few months for Consuegra as she pieced together a staff and roster
They're too nice," Consuegra said with a laugh
"I've actually been on them about just holding each other to a high standard
six newcomers and they are just trying to figure everything out
They want to create this chemistry where we all get along and we're all for each other
but at the same time we all need to hold each other to a really high standard
"So I have ironically been on them about being tougher on each other
After mingling with students for about 30 minutes
Consuegra and Smart headed back to the Al McGuire Center to get back to work
it's no different than for me and the other head coaches at Marquette," Smart said
"And understanding that our program is about something larger that makes Marquette really
It was a quick stay for the Marquette women's basketball team at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville
The fourth-seeded Golden Eagles fell to fifth-seeded Villanova
in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament on Saturday
MU (20-10) came into the postseason with optimism after exceeding expections under first-year coach Cara Consuegra, who was named Big East co-coach of the year earlier in the week.
Box score: Villanova 73, Marquette 66
But the Golden Eagles couldn't keep up with the Wildcats (18-13) in a game that included nine ties and 10 lead changes
The largest lead for either team in the first half was three points
Villanova took control late in the third quarter
and MU couldn't get within four points in the fourth
"I'm disappointed obviously on our end," Consuegra said
"I think the thing we have to remember is we're a very inexperienced team
None of our kids have played in this type of stage ever
this is a learning lesson for us to understand that playoff basketball requires your best
And we didn't have our best today on either end of the floor."
The Golden Eagles were led by sophomore forward Skylar Forbes, who had 23 points and nine boards. Forbes, who made the all-Big East first team
has scored 20 or more points in seven games this season
Halle Vice added 17 points and nine rebounds
MU needed a run in the conference tournament to force its way into the NCAA Tournament bubble conversation
But the Golden Eagles should get invited to the Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament, the secondary tournament run by the NCAA to compete with the WNIT.
and I told our kids that in the locker room
We'll get a chance to play in postseason."So this shouldn't take away from the year that we had
But the bond that this team has formed and the way that we've been able to come together and the love and care that we have for each other is above all of that."

There was one line in the first article that jumped out at me and made me start to question everything that Consuegra told Steele
We can still treat it as something Consuegra said because why else would Steele have written it
Forbes’ length and shooting ability will make her an important player as a sophomore
That was my jumping off point for writing everything you’re about to read
because “great shooter” was not the first thing that came to my mind about Skylar Forbes’ freshman campaign under the direction of former head coach Megan Duffy
Skylar Forbes ended up shooting 47.5% from the field overall last season
which is in the 84th percentile in the country
Maybe that’s the point that Consuegra was making
However, when you see the phrase “shooting ability,” you’re not thinking about someone excelling at the Mikan Drill. Forbes was 3-for-20 from long range in 2023-24
including 0-9 outside of MU’s 20 games against Big East opponents including the conference tournament
I’m willing to believe that Consuegra is seeing something in workouts since being hired that leads her to say this out loud in front of people
particularly people who are going to publish her sentiments in the newspaper.....
The flipside of that is wondering what Megan Duffy was doing for four months while Forbes wasn’t getting her shot to fall if she was seeing the shots go down in practice
Here’s a quote from Consuegra while talking about junior college transfer Ayuen Akot
because that’s below the efficiency break-even point of 33.3%
Lee Volker has played 1,061 Division 1 college basketball minutes in 71 games across three seasons at Duke and Marquette. She is shooting, in total, 6-for-49 while averaging less than 0.7 attempts per game
The word “can” is doing an awful lot of work here
I’m not going to say that she can’t do it
I’m saying no one has seen it yet in three years
This provides a nice transition here since Consuegra was complimenting Ayuen Akot’s shooting ability
we need a pure shooter that nobody is going to come off of
we need somebody in the corner that people are not going to come off and help off of
I’m willing to believe that she’s a very good catch-and-shoot corner shooter
But Akot shot just 33% last season for Frank Phillips College
If they needed her shooting it and she took a few extra ill-advised shots
If she can do better than 33% because she’s part of an offense that spreads the shooting out a bit more
Here’s what Consuegra said about Olivia Porter:
I think what Liv brings is she’s just solid
She makes the right plays at the right time
Porter finished her season in Charlotte with a turnover rate of 31.8%
one of the worst turnover rates in the country
especially given how many minutes she was playing
Porter was #345 in the country in assist rate
Porter ranked in the 87th percentile in defensive win shares according to Her Hoop Stats
That number dips to 71st percentile when you make it win shares per 40 minutes
but that’s still somewhere between solid and strong
Porter is the lone incoming transfer from Charlotte on the roster
so that scouting report is the only one in this entire rundown about a player that Consuegra has actually coached
It’s coming from a much deeper understand of who Porter is as a player....
so it’s a little bit surprising that she said that Porter is solid given her turnover problem
she was I think top three in steals in her league at her previous school
especially on the defensive end that we didn’t have
Mason was #2 in steals per game in 18 Missouri Valley Conference games in 2023-24
You’ll notice that Consuegra didn’t mention her offense there
and with an effective field goal percentage of 35.8%
both in terms of assists and limiting turnovers
but the shooting is a question mark heading into the teeth of a Big East schedule
“We didn’t have any back-to-the-basket size
And bring that size and strength in the paint
We’re not going to draw any conclusions from Bediako’s 57 minutes of action at Georgia Tech this past season
but I don’t disagree with the general consensus of the scouting report on Skylar Forbes
Very limited sample sizes on Vice and Smith
If Bediako can do those things and do them well
Also has some great athleticism defensively
I think she’s going to be a really good on-ball defender for us as well
I have to disagree with the “makes good decisions” part
at least from what we saw from Perkins at Syracuse
I suppose there’s a certain amount of “Perkins’ decision was actually a good one but it didn’t work out and it’s a turnover charged to her” in that rate
I don’t want to say I’m unnerved by some of these scouting reports and quotes from Cara Consuegra
the fact of the matter is that often times
she’s holding a perspective that’s wildly different than what we’ve actually seen happen on a basketball court in games that count
It’s Consuegra’s job to maximize her players’ best qualities and minimize their worst tendencies
so we’ll see what she puts together when the Golden Eagles hit the court for the first time this fall

Brooklyn-based designer Jean Pierre Consuegra knows how to design a club flyer that makes a lineup pop
In an age where Instagram rewards algorithm-friendly sameness and our attention spans have been whittled down to splinters
a truly beautiful club flyer feels rare these days—one with not just a good lineup
not just the right alchemical combo of DJ and venue and promoter that makes for a classic night out
but something genuinely awesome to look at
That's why the graphic designer Jean-Pierre Consuegra's flyers buck the trend: They reward attention
but the designer doesn't throw too many bells and whistles in the way of advertising a good time
Consuegra's artwork is enough to make me stop my scrolling and scan a lineup for a party I'd like to see—but more than that
they're the kind of artwork I'd like to see every day
to the point that I bought a print of one of his trail cam collages (that I swear I've been meaning to frame and hang for approximately eight months)
As Consuegra's label began to pick up traction
he started releasing daily mixes with original art
and designing his own flyers for parties he threw
which helped him drop the copycat act and hone his own personal aesthetic: collages rooted in found images
warped and filtered beyond the confines of reality and transformed into brightly rendered ambassadors for the party they're advertising.

The Golden Eagles will add two freshmen to the roster next fall
With just one basketball game in a two week stretch, Wednesday brought us the chance to ponder the future of Marquette women’s basketball. That’s because it was the start of the fall signing period for the Class of 2025, and new head coach Cara Consuegra had two recruits to announce as officially on board with the Golden Eagles
Here’s what Consuegra had to say in a statement about both of her signees as a combo package:
“We are thrilled to welcome JJ and Kameron as the newest members of the Marquette women’s basketball family,” Consuegra said
“Both are winners on and off the court and we look forward to watching the impact the two of them have on our team and university over the next four years.”
A post shared by Marquette Women's Basketball (@marquettewbb)
Here’s what the press release had to say about Herring:
2.1 assists and 2.5 steals per game in 2023-24
a season where the War Eagles went 24-6 overall and 14-0 in their region
Herring was a state champion her freshman season in 2021-22 and received honorable mention honors by the GACA that same year
She is a two-time best offensive player award winner at Woodward
“Kameron is a versatile guard who can shoot the three and go downhill,” Consuegra said
“She can play multiple positions with her length and her quick release will make it tough on defenses
She is a proven winner in the talent-rich area of Atlanta
and we can’t wait for her to get to Milwaukee.”
Herring was Cara Consuegra’s first post-hiring blitz commitment and her first high school prospect commitment after she made her pledge in late August
the 2024-25 Golden Eagles do not have any freshmen at all on the roster
which is the kind of thing that happens when you have a coaching change were the coach leaves for a new job
Consuegra got a little bit of a leg up in the operation here as Megan Duffy was recruiting Herring as far back as at least July of 2023
A post shared by Marquette Women's Basketball (@marquettewbb)
Here’s what the press release had to say about Barnes:
3.1 assists and 2.0 steals during her junior season at The Prairie School
Barnes is a three-time conference player of the year and three-time Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 4 First-Team All-State selection
The Prairie School has only lost seven games the last three seasons combined
The 2023-24 season ended in the WIAA Division 4 state semifinals
Barnes plays AAU for Wisconsin Playground Elite
“JJ is a combo guard who can impact the game in a lot of ways,” Consuegra said
“Her versatility and skillset make her a tough assignment for defenses
and she is a true three-level scorer with her toughness and tempo on the offensive end
We are very excited about her staying close to home and playing for us at Marquette.”
Barnes made her commitment to Marquette about two weeks after Herring
Barnes was a player that the previous coaching staff was recruiting dating all the way back to 2021
that’s what happens when you’re dealing with in-state prospects
Barnes is technically Consuegra’s third high school commitment
as Se’Crette Carter committed to the Golden Eagles for the Class of 2026 not long after Herring pledged in late August
The signing of Herring and Barnes leaves Marquette with three possible open scholarship spots for 2025-26
but with no freshmen to rise to the status of sophomore
it’s possible that’s an intentional move by Consuegra and her staff
That might be a move to leave space open for the transfer portal next spring for this year’s freshmen looking for a fresh start
but MU does already project as having 12 players on scholarship
so it’s possible that Consuegra and her staff are just going to kick the roster balance situation can down the road and make big moves in recruiting for 2026-27
Everything you need to know about the Golden Eagles for the upcoming season
I haven’t written a single official Marquette women’s basketball season preview article
and yet somehow — mostly because of the coaching change
— there are already TWENTY-EIGHT articles in this 2024-25 season preview hub
Yep, Marquette women’s basketball has a new head coach this season. Megan Duffy is off at Virginia Tech now
and Athletic Director Bill Scholl hired former Terri Mitchell assistant Cara Consuegra away from Charlotte to replace Duffy
we’ve got A LOT of roster turnover to discuss as Consuegra brought in a bunch of transfers to get her squad up to competition level
There’s also already the Summer Check-In series for the entire rest of the Big East in there
and MU just recently dropped the non-conference schedule as well
Still to come in between now and the season opener at UCF on November 7th:
we’re going to have lots more to talk about
The Golden Eagles open the season as well as Cara Consuegra’s tenure on the road in Orlando
There’s a lot of questions for Cara Consuegra’s first season
42 glorious games of NCAA Division 1 basketball coming at you to start the 2024-25 season
we turn our attention to the three women who come to the Golden Eagles with D1 experience but without a connection to Cara Consuegra
What’s on tap in terms of challenges for the Golden Eagles in Cara Consuegra’s first season in charge
so we’re going to split this up into two parts
with the two JuCo prospects combining with the guard that’s already familiar with Cara Consuegra here
Cara Consuegra has six women returning from last year’s roster
but not much in the way of returning production
Here’s some thoughts on what I saw from Cara Consuegra and her team
The Big East television schedule release is mostly FloSports except for 2 home games on FS1 and the regular season finale on Fox....
I expected them to wait until the Big East schedule comes out in the next week or so
A bad start last year probably cost the Johnnies a tourney berth
Can this year’s group fuse together fast enough to stop that from happening again
A highly emotional season ended on a big high note for the Hoyas
The Blue Demons swap out a bunch of experienced contributors from a losing team for mostly freshmen
Can that restore the glory in Lincoln Park
Year 1 under Billi Chambers might have been worse than the season that got the previous coach fired
What does it mean for next season when nearly half your shots per game transfers
another major roster overhaul for Tony Bozzella and the Pirates
Erin Batth’s first season in charge ended with pretty much the same record as the year before she was hired
It has been FOUR YEARS since I pointed out that they were not doing this
It looks like Jim Flanery and his players are going all in for one final run together
Join us as we debate exactly how great the Huskies will be next season
Austin Parkinson has led two seasons of improvement in Indianapolis
Is it time to make the jump to a winning season
the league will have three media partners broadcasting games
The Mets had over 20 minor league players become free agents
On November 4, 2024, 513 minor league players were declared free agents, as their minor league contracts expired. With over 100 players in the organization, ranging from newly-signed teenagers who recently made their professional debuts in the Dominican Summer League to 30-something grizzled veterans still looking for a major league role while palying in Triple-A, the Mets had a total of 23 minor leaguers in the organization declare free agency
While many were recent arrivals to the organization
having signed one-year deals covering the 2024 season
many have been part of the Mets’ family for years
Signed for $500,000 out of the Dominican Republic on July 2
Stanley Consuegra missed a lot of early developmental time to injury and COVID
but when he finally got regular playing time
he highlighted why he was a target of the Mets
ranking as a system top prospect multiple time since 2021
Consuegra has plenty of natural strength and a long swing that generates torque from his lower half
allowing him to punish balls he makes solid contact with; In July 2022
he hit a home run that was estimated to have travelled over 500 feet due to the fact that it easily cleared the left field wall and almost hit the Thunderbolt
the rollercoaster in the lot adjacent to Maimonides Park
and combined with an inability to read spin
has resulted in an eye-popping strikeout rate
he has all the qualities a prototypical right fielder
with the ability to play center field in a pinch
the first time out of high school in 2016 and the second time out of Coastal Carolina University in 2018
Carlos Cortes is a jack-of-all-trades but a master of none
Over the course of his collegiate and professional career
Cortes stands open at the plate an uppercutty swing
a stark difference from his earlier high school and collegiate days
His swing mechanics are fluid and Cortes swings at most pitches with intent
particularly against breaking balls out of the strike zone and versus left-handers
Pitches that he is able to make solid contact with jump off the bat despite his small stature; his load
and swing plane all magnify the power that you might expect from a guy that stands just 5’7”
but stagnation in his hit tool has limited his accessible raw during in-game situations
Because his arm strength is fringy from both sides and because he is a slightly below-average runner
Being an outfielder makes him a bit more valuable as a player
the Mets have primarily used him in the outfield since 2021
and then in December 2022 was selected by the Mets in the minor league phase of the 2022 Rule 5 Draft
Gil is probably closer to 200 as his upper body has filled in a great deal since first being drafted
holding his hands high and wrapping his bat behind his head
His swings uses a small leg kick and is almost all upper body
leading to a lot of poor contact and strikeouts
but he has the ability to put a charge in balls that he hits squarely with his whippy stroke
A shortstop for much of his earlier career
Gil has played more at the hot corner than he as at the keystone since returning to the field in the post-pandemic shutdown era
he still has the ability to play shortstop but with his thick upper body in short spurts but is probably better suited at third in the long-term
A highly-regarded prep prospect from Alabama
the Los Angeles Angels originally drafted Jeremiah Jackson in the second round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of St
buying him out of his commitment to Mississippi State University with a $1,194,000 signing bonus
the Angels sought to bolster their bullpen and sent Jackson to the Mets in exchange for big league reliever Dominic Leone
Jackson generates power from the loft in his swing and the torque created from the coil in his upper and lower halves
but he generally struggles against pitches outside of his wheelhouse as a result
as his plate coverage is very limited otherwise
and generally waits for fastballs that he thinks he can drive for extra bases
Jackson has experience playing multiple positions
he has played limited time in the outfield
and arm should allow him to play any of the three outfield positions to varying degrees
but Jackson needs to improve his read of the ball off the bat and his routes to the ball
and until he does that and gets more time in the outfield under his belt
Brooklyn-born Jaylen Palmer was drafted out of Holy Cross High School in Flushing in the 2018 MLB Draft and generated a lot of early buzz thanks to his combination of speed
but a long swing and problems adjusting to spin have stagnated his bat
as he has registered exit velocities around 110 MPH in the past
but he has struggled getting good wood on ball consistently
but his swing is so long levered that he simply is unable to adjust once he commits to balls with spin and movement
resulting in swings-and-misses or balls that are hit with weak contact
as Palmer has plenty of attractive secondary baseball tools
leggy Palmer is an average-to-above-average runner and has learned to turn that into a weapon on the basepaths
He shows good instincts out of the box and hustles on the basepaths
Palmer’s speed has allowed him to transition from the infield to the outfield
he began his career primarily playing third base and shortstop but now plays center field adroitly
His natural athleticism and speed allow him to play center
and as he becomes more comfortable in the outfield
he will learn to see the ball off the bat better and learn better routes to the ball
rather than relying on his speed and afterburners to close in on the ball late
His arm is average-to-above-average and would fit anywhere in the outfield
Originally signed out of Carlos Guillen’s academy in Venezuela on July 2
Jose Peroza never really developed as expected
The short-and-stocky 16-year-old was literally corn-fed and farm strong from a life on a farm
but the power many scouts and evaluators thought would come with better nutrition and weight training never came
Nicknamed the “mayor of Brooklyn” due to the amount of time he spent there over the course of his career
listed at 220-pounds but probably weighing more than that in actuality
with a wide base and his bat barred behind his head
with a bat path that contains a bit of loft
His bat speed is average at best but is able to muscle pitches that he is able to barrel squarely
Peroza has a strong arm and is currently capable of playing third base
but his body will likely be a high maintenance one as he ages
meaning that he may lose mobility and range around the hot corner
A minor league free agent who was signed by the Mets in February 2023, former Baltimore Orioles top prospect DJ Stewart was surprisingly solid for the Mets in 2023
Promoted in July from Syracuse on the power of 16 home runs in 51 games
Stewart turned into an everyday contributor in the dog days of summer
hitting .244/.333/.506 with 11 home runs in 58 games
He started the 2024 season on the major league roster
hitting a paltry .177/.325/.298 with 5 home runs in 74 games
but would not return to the Mets down the playoff hunt stretch or in the playoffs themselves

When you’re the new coach at a Division 1 school, there’s a lot of things you have to do. One of them, perhaps the most public thing you need to do, is let a whole bunch of prospects know that you’re trying to recruit them to go to your new school. That’s what new Marquette women’s basketball head coach Cara Consuegra has been up to lately
I count TEN potential Golden Eagles announcing that they have a new scholarship offer from MU and Consuegra....
and I can’t even say “high school prospects” because she’s not limiting herself to young women who have already started high school
There is A LOT to get to and it’s all over the map for the next few years of recruiting
so let me drop in the current scholarship chart here at the top so you can use that as a reference guide..
Thank you so much @cconsuegra and @MarquetteWBB for this opportunity!!!! https://t.co/LYr2i7TnCj
Shouts to Kentucky Sports Radio (even if sometimes they don’t get the jokes) as they have a writeup on new UK head coach Kenny Brooks offering Martin a scholarship
They tracked down that she’s a 6’1” guard
That’s for Springboro High School in Ohio
and that’s in between Cincinnati and Dayton
Martin also shot 41% from behind the three-point line
she can be an impact player no matter where she ends up
The offers are flying in for Martin right now
which is a little interesting since she’s a 2025 prospect and it’s a little late in the cycle for her
and North Carolina amongst others just since mid-April on top of that offer from the Wildcats that I mentioned a moment ago
I don’t have a video to drop in here for you to watch, but you can go check out her Hudl page and there’s a lot of clips over there
I’m excited to announce that after a great conversation with @cconsuegra, I have received an offer from Marquette! pic.twitter.com/G2BZAb1sHv
Dunbar’s own Twitter bio says she’s a 5’11” guard
She attends Jefferson Christian Academy in Virginia
and that’s just a few miles from the West Virginia state line up near Blacksburg
MaxPreps has a little bit of statistical detail on Dunbar’s junior year
as she averaged 32.8 points per game along with 3.5 rebounds
She shot 50% from the field according to the stat sheet
but she is shooting a lot to the extent that this kind of usage is clearly not going to happen/be possible at the D1 level
Dunbar connected on 41% of her three-point attempts while not attempting all that many relative to her overall attempts
Offers from all across Division 1 are piling up for Dunbar. In her last 10 offers that she’s posted about, you’ll find Syracuse, Virginia, Rutgers
Dunbar helpfully put up this video herself on the same day that she posted about her offer from Marquette
Here are a few highlights from games 1 and 2 at @SelectEventsBB Live at Lakepoint this past weekend. pic.twitter.com/roRW5v6S5M
I also want to link off to Dunbar — again, listing herself at 5’11” — grabbing rim at the end of a workout
Civil is a six-foot tall small forward, or at least that’s her position according to her Twitter bio. Googling around, I can find her listed as a guard — including by ESPN as they grade her at a 93 but don’t rank her in the top 60 — even a point guard to be specific
She attends Palm Bay High School in Florida
She was named the Florida Today Girls Basketball Player of the Year this past season — yes
as a junior — as the Pirates reached a regional final
so that certainly explains the point guard part of the evaluations
She was a 36% long range shooter as a junior which is pretty good
Civil has recently picked up offers from Georgia
Those are all since the post about the offer from Marquette
and a little bit back you can find Tennessee and Baylor in there
I found a nearly five minute long highlight reel for Civil
so she’s playing against similar age players
Received a few new offers after a busy weekend. Thank you to all coaches who have reached out! pic.twitter.com/rWwcp59n8R
After a great conversation with @cconsuegra I’m blessed to receive an offer from Marquette University!! pic.twitter.com/XFvCb6QdbC
Prep Girls Hoops lists Durley as a 5’9” guard
She attends Classen School of Advanced Studies in Oklahoma City
and 2.8 steals per game this past season for Classen while the team put up a 20-8 record
and that feels wrong or at least not likely
she was Classen’s only double digit scorer while leading in assists and steals
It seems like she’s not quite popping at the high major level right now. Her last few offers before Marquette are Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
I wonder if this is a situation where Consuegra had her eyes on Durley while at Charlotte and believes she can make the jump to the Big East
I have a nearly three minute long highlight reel for you
Blessed to receive an offer from Marquette University! Thank you for believing in me! @MarquetteWBB @TeamCurry @SheIsCoachAsh pic.twitter.com/VynI0JmMZG
Minus attends Veterans High School in Kathleen
and that’s all about dead center of the state
I don’t know what kind of stats Minus was averaging this past season, but I did find out that she set a new VHS single season scoring record with 524 points
so that would work out to just a little under 17 points per game
I’m not trying to set unreal expectations here
but I feel like Minus could have a shot at re-breaking that record as a senior
Can I interest you in nearly 10 minutes of sophomore year highlights on Hudl
As you can tell from the graphic layout here
Mobley plays for the same grassroots outfit as Bryn Martin
Never hurts to build relationships with a coaching staff
no matter whether that’s high school or the club circuit
Does she have a little bit more growing to do
She attends Olentangy High School in Lewis Center
which is on the far north side of Columbus
I don’t want to call it a suburb because the Google map doesn’t show consistent municipality between the two
but if people in Lewis Center say they are
Max Preps says that the Braves went 24-2 this season with a perfect record in conference play
pushing themselves all the way up to #9 in the Ohio state rankings
as she tied for the team high in scoring at 17.0 points and averaged a double-double with a team high 12.0 rebounds per game
and 2.2 blocks on top of that — leading the team in the first and third departments — is just showing off a little bit
Mobley has picked up recent offers from Georgia Tech
There’s a long time between now and when she might sign a letter of intent in 2026
Here’s 90 seconds of highlights from late April of this year, and she has a Hudl page, too
Session 1 on the books. pic.twitter.com/czzcBEAxUw
After speaking with @cconsuegra I was blessed to received an offer to Marquette University! Thank you for the great conversation! pic.twitter.com/H9owlvi7NV
I believe, between the naming convention and the same high school, that Qandace Samuels is the younger sister of UConn guard Qadence Samuels. The UConn bio says Qadence has five younger siblings
It also throws a tiiiiiiiiny wrench in the process of trying to Google up any information about Qandace
and 2.0 assists for a Bishop McNamara squad that was top 10 in the country
⭐️ @NyajuacniRiak (2028)⛹ ♀️ 6’2” | G/F Madison La Follette HSEarned a scholarship offer from Head Coach Cara Consuegra and the Marquette University Golden Eagles of the Big East‼️ ♠️ #AcesEarnIt pic.twitter.com/edvaOlCYz1
I’m not putting in effort to tell you things about someone who is finishing up eighth grade right now.....
but I will say that it’s probably a good idea to recruit 6’2” 14 year olds from your home state
You want to watch her against 16 and 17 year olds from back in September
Blessed and honored to have received a POWER 5 offer from @MarquetteWBB Thank you Coach @cconsuegra for believing in me !! Truly grateful!! !! pic.twitter.com/wGWENet02x
Still not putting the effort in for eighth graders.....
but I will point out that her Twitter bio says she’s 6’3” tall
Gaskin attends Northside Christian Academy in Charlotte
so I wonder if there’s some connections from Consuegra’s old job at work here
Uh, should we mention that she has a Max Preps page..... because apparently she was playing with the high school varsity this past year? And leading them in scoring and rebounding

Consuerga is seventh head coach in Marquette women's basketball program history
The Seville-based firm Vázquez Consuegra has won the competition to build the town hall of Montegiorgio
on the remains of the old Convent of San Francisco
The project includes refurbishing one of the elements left of the monastic complex
The winning scheme proposes demolition of the buildings raised in the 1950s
Massing is reduced by confining the less public parts of the program within the existing
historical plinth (the residual part of the town walls)
and cultural areas are organized above ground around the monumental Panfili staircase
Arranged around it are the grand Council Hall with its large skylight
and a two-level space for exhibiting objects that belonged to the convent

The former Rutgers star joined the Marquette coaching room a year ago and will stay on for 2024-25
Cara Consuegra’s first coaching staff at Marquette continues to take shape. On Monday, Consuegra announced that she would be retaining assistant coach Khadijah Rushdan from Megan Duffy’s 2023-24 women’s basketball staff in the same role
“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity and trust by Cara to stay on here at Marquette,” Rushdan said
for not only who she is as a coach and her vision
She’s a proven winner with contagious energy and I couldn’t be more thrilled to continue a winning tradition alongside of her.”
And Consuegra on her decision to retain Rushdan as an assistant coach:
“I am very excited to have Khadijah on my staff here at Marquette,” Consuegra said
“Khadijah had an incredible playing career and her passion for game will help elevate our program
She has the energy needed to continue the winning tradition at Marquette and her ability to lead and connect with student-athletes will have a tremendous impact on our program.”
There’s a continuum of those two things pushing and pulling on each other
where Duffy’s interest in keeping Rushdan as an assistant plays a part in determining how much Rushdan may or may not want to leave
which can be seen as a strength if that’s more of a focus on using what you have on any given roster
then having input and viewpoints from her assistants
especially one that she didn’t work with last year
could be incredibly useful for a first season in a new job
The Marquette women's basketball roster is neatly divided into six newcomers and six returning players
MU women's head coach Cara Consuegra provided a brief scouting report on each one
"I think what Liv brings is she’s just solid
5-9 junior guard (previously at Southern Illinois)"Jaidynn was actually a player that we were recruiting when we were at Charlotte
When we got this job and started to evaluate
especially on the defensive end that we didn’t have."
6-3 sophomore forward (previously at Georgia Tech)“We didn’t have any back-to-the-basket size
"A player that we recruited to Charlotte and signed with us
She’s going to do anything that you ask her to do at a really high level
In terms of our culture and creating this culture of playing with heart and having effort and grit and toughness
I felt like she could really help with that foundation of our culture
she’s a big that can pound inside but can also shoot the three and be on the perimeter some
So she’ll help on the defensive end as well."
5-11 junior forward (previously at Frank Philips College)"Shooter
She shoots the ball really well and she defends
That’s really important for our next class
But she brings a little bit better length and size that we felt were missing."

Consuegra brings head coaching experience back to where her coaching career began
Marquette’s newly-minted head coach Cara Consuegra wasn’t going to leave her job at Charlotte for just any coaching opportunity — only for a “special” opportunity
she knew that opportunity had come and she had to take it
Returning to the campus where she developed as an assistant coach for over a decade was too good of an opportunity to pass up
The Golden Eagles were ready to embrace her with open arms

Consuegra stepped off Marquette’s campus in 2011. She was a bright-eyed 32-year old ready to take the reins of a program of her own in Charlotte
she became the winningest coach in history
During her tenure she coached 30 all-conference players and seven who went on to professional careers
with over a decade of head coaching on her resume
Consuegra brings her experience back to where her career began
Under the mentorship of former Marquette head coach Terri Mitchell
Consuegra was an assistant coach for the Golden Eagles from from 2004-11
“This is really special to me. To stand up here and say that I am your head women’s basketball coach,” Consuegra said at her introductory press conference
I’ve been so fortunate to have been here before
“The relationships that I’ve had with my players
They mean more than any trophy we would hoist or any tournament bid
it’s something I’ve always wanted to do
Ultimately for me it is vehicle to help me help young people grow
Preparing young people for what is next and for what they can be.”
obviously walking into this program that’s been really strong — Megan did a great job
So I don’t really view it — although we have some work to do with the roster
when a coach leaves — it’s not it’s not a rebuilding
tweak — change to me and reload,” Consuegra told The Next
“And so I do feel fortunate about that
I’m very much a blue collar type in bringing in players that are going to outwork out hustle
play with a lot of grit and toughness.”
These are the traits she’ll seek as she builds out the program in her image
“When [I] think about what we want our team to look like it’s … a team that plays with a lot of heart and has that toughness and [is] just as fun to come to watch and so whatever … recruits I bring in
everybody will really have a part in helping us build that culture.”

To date, one Conseugra hire has been announced by Marquette Athletics — Deont’a McChester
McChester was part of Consuegra’s coaching staff at Charlotte for one season and follows her to this new opportunity with the Golden Eagles
“I am really honored that Cara has trusted me to join her at Marquette,” McChester said
“I am a true believer in Cara and her vision she has for Marquette women’s basketball
This is a great opportunity for us to represent the Marquette brand and compete for championships in the BIG EAST Conference.”

Cara Consuegra was one of 15,000 fans in attendance for the Ally Tip-Off in Charlotte
who was then in her role as Charlotte’s all-time winningest head coach
The fandom surrounding Clark has launched Iowa — and women’s basketball more generally — into the mainstream sports media landscape
“It’s always incredible to see such tremendous people have that type of success,” Consuegra told The Next
“And I think it’s well deserved because they treat people right
They’re extremely smart with how they made a program and know how to plan for how they bring in players and all of those things
So I think it’s just great when you see people that are doing things the right way have that level of success.”

Consuegra politely refutes Bluder’s notion that Iowa wouldn’t have reached these heights of success without Consuegra’s contributions to the foundation of the program
she appreciates the way that Bluder and her staff value everyone who has come through the program
This is an approach that she herself has adopted and takes with her to Marquette
“The thing [the Iowa coaching staff does] best in my opinion is they make everybody around them feel very valued … That’s the biggest thing I’ve taken with me like how to be able to do this job — which certainly has become so much more of a business — and still keep that that part of it where you’re treating people right and doing the right thing and making people feel important and valued.”

Cara Consuegra was introduced as the seventh head coach in Marquette women’s basketball program history on Thursday
who was an assistant at Marquette from 2004-11
spoke with reporters at an introductory press conference in the Alumni Memorial Union
James Friel named director of recreation
Cara Consuegra tried not to focus too intently on the faces in the crowd during the news conference at which she was introduced as Marquette women's basketball coach Thursday in a room at the school's Alumni Memorial Union
The emotions of being back on the campus where she spent seven seasons as an assistant coach were already overwhelming
Staring at those who helped her return as head coach would have been too overwhelming
In the front row were Consuegra's husband, an MU graduate, and their two sons decked out in Golden Eagles gear. Along the perimeter of the room were Terri Mitchell, the former MU head coach who hired Consuegra as an assistant
who lauded Consuegra for helping her as a player and person during Monfre's time as a standout for the Golden Eagles
to stand up here and say that I'm your head women's basketball coach," Consuegra said
"I've been so fortunate to have been here before
I have so many family and friends here that I can't look at or I won't get through my remarks
"We have former players here that were part of this
And we are just so thrilled to be back here to be able to pour into this community and this university."
Consuegra comes to MU after 13 seasons as head coach at Charlotte
she was an assistant for Mitchell from 2004-11
Mitchell hired Consuegra on the recommendation of Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder
Consuegra was a standout guard for the Hawkeyes from 1997-2001
You just get that thumbs-up from somebody else and it doesn't take very long when you interview her that she's special."
It also didn't take long for Mitchell to see that Consuegra was a future head coach
She was hired by Charlotte at just 32 years old
"I would just watch her command the room," Mitchell said
They knew when she spoke that she meant business
put her arm around them when they needed that."
Former Marquette players like Erin Monfre give endorsementConsuegra's phone has been blowing up with calls and messages since the news of her hiring broke
Several of them came from former MU players
"I got a great voicemail from Angel Robinson
one of the greats to play here," Consuegra said
"And it was so explicit that I couldn't tell you what it said
Monfre, who played at MU from 2005-09 and works as a personal trainer in Milwaukee
knew she had to be in attendance when Consuegra was introduced
"For me to be here 15 years later speaks volumes on the impact she had on me as a female
as someone growing into who I was becoming as an adult
"Cara wasn't even my specific position coach; she worked with point guards and I was a wing
She cared about everyone on the team as a whole
She connects with us as people first and players second
those four years I dealt with my mom's cancer diagnosis and the passing of that
I went to her office several times on harder days and she was there."
Consuegra's time with the Golden Eagles predated MU President Michael Lovell and athletic director Bill Scholl, who were part of the coaching search to replace Megan Duffy along with deputy athletic director Mike Broeker and executive associate athletic director Sarah Bobert
"She came up to the top of our list as someone we wanted to talk to," Lovell said
"We looked at her history and then we realized that she had spent a good deal of time here and been under Terri and coached some of our best players."
Scholl had heard of Consuegra but they had never met until the interview process
"I love the fact that she's had success over a sustained period of time," Scholl said
I think it was a much safer bet that she knows how to build it and sustain it for a period of time
She's so aligned with what Marquette is all about
Maybe she had some home-court advantage because she had been here for seven years
The six players remaining on the Golden Eagles' roster sat in the front row
There are many spots for Consuegra to fill
it's easier than it used to be because there's the transfer portal as most people probably know in here," Consuegra said
"We'll certainly be active in there to determine who could be the best fit for us as we move forward
as we continue to evaluate the young women that are on our team right now
we want to bring in the best players we can bring but we want to bring in the right people as well
It's really important the foundation that we set in our first year
That we're setting the culture to propel us forward."
What kind of style will the Golden Eagles play?Consuegra has a very specific vision of how she wants her teams to look at MU
And I want players that are going to be out giving everything they have for this university
Things you hear coaches say that are cliched but they are true for me
"I want our fans to be able to come out and say
we watched those young women play and they just played so hard for us
Signed out of the Dominican Republic for $500,000, Stanly Consuegra was one of the better quick-twitch athletes in the 2017-2018 international free agent class. He began the 2018 season in the Dominican Summer League but impressed enough organizational evaluators to promoted him to the GCL Mets after only a few weeks
While Consuegra didn’t exactly dominate in his stateside debut in
He entered the 2019 season with a knee injury and eventually had surgery on his ACL
ending his season before he was able to play in a single game
he missed all of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic
The outfielder finally got back on the field in June 2021
but he broke his hand after just three games
finally finding himself back in the FCL Mets lineup in late August
the 20-year-old appeared in 20 games and hit .270/.325/.500 with 2 home runs
Lucie to start the 2022 and did not look like someone who had missed so much developmental time
hitting .251/.324/.431 in 66 games with 8 home runs
He was promoted to Brooklyn at the beginning of July and remained there for the rest of the summer
giving him a 2022 season total of .245/.317/.408 in 122 games with 13 home runs
Outside of a rehab assignment in June due to an injury
he remained in Brooklyn for the entire 2023 season
The outfielder hit .232/.294/.489 with 23 home runs and 6 stolen bases
Not only were his 23 home runs tied for second most in the South Atlantic League
but they also set a Brooklyn Cyclones single-season home run record
beating Fransisco Alvarez’ record of 22 set in 2021
holding his hands high and angling his bat behind his head at 2:00
He swings without much of a load or weight transfer
instead closing up his front leg and generating torque with his lower half
he demonstrated loud line drive power and was expected to add additional in-game power and that has occurred and then some
He regularly posts exit velocities over 100 MPH and his name is consistently among system leaders
evidenced by his 109 strikeouts and 27.7% strikeout rate in 2023
but he does have excellent bat speed and strong wrists
and this allows him to make a lot of contact than his swing looks like it should
He struggled the most against breaking balls
but given the amount of missed developmental time in the last few years
Key to Consuegra’s development will be the improvement of his eye at the plate and his ability to recognize spin
and put breaking balls in the air rather than hammer them into the ground
Consuegra originally trained as a shortstop and was initially billed as being one when he first signed but has since transitioned to playing the outfield and has not played a single inning in the infield as a professional
