85 social housing units in Cornellá de Llobregat, by Peris+Toral
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has named 85 Social Housing in Cornellà de Llobregat (Barcelona)
an 85-unit timber-framed social housing development designed by Peris + Toral Arquitectes
as the winner of the RIBA International Prize 2024
Lu Wenyu said: “Through this innovative approach to social housing
Peris + Toral Arquitectes has responded to the shifting demands of societal groupings by crafting a housing project that is adaptive
Not defined by stereotypes or fixed assumptions of what constitutes ‘family’
the intelligent organization of space encourages lively interaction and connection within the community
ensuring that the architecture functions on different scales – from the discrete dwelling to the collective space
This building has set a precedent for future developments in Barcelona and beyond and is a worthy winner of the RIBA International Prize 2024.”
The units of a five-story apartment block in Cornellà form a matrix that ensures maximum use of floor area as well as an optimal bay for the structure made of zero-kilometer timber
The construction is organized around a courtyard at whose four corners the vertical circulation cores are located
and out to which the private terraces giving access to the dwellings look
All the home units are composed of square-shaped modules with undifferentiated sizes and uses
arranged enfilade by means of large openings that omit corridors and let users enjoy double orientations

residents of Cornellà de Llobregat – part of Barcelona’s metropolitan area – can struggle to access critical community services such as schools
This is due to thermal discomfort experienced during high temperatures
which impacts residents’ mobility choices and leads to an increasing reliance on private vehicles
With climate projections indicating an increase in extreme heat
the Cornellà municipality wanted to ensure the city’s services and facilities remain easily accessible under all weather conditions
The ‘Climate Itineraries’ project addresses these challenges by establishing green mobility corridors and reimagining the landscape
This includes enhancing connections between schools
as well as redesigning streets to incorporate more vegetation
This is one of five projects selected for the Sustainable Cities Mobility Challenge
coordinated by Climate KIC and funded for the second year through the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) America via a grant from FedEx
“We created an urban strategy for climate adaptation because we really wanted residents to use more sustainable mobility modes without risking their health on hotter days
We are experimenting with prototypes for buildings and open spaces that include best practices for climate and heat adaptation,” says Mattia Federico Leone
Professor of Building Technologies and Environmental Design at the University of Naples
Mattia is also Co-Director of the Urban Climate Change Research Network (UCCRN) European Hub and both organisations are collaborating with the municipality of Cornellà on this project
The Climate Itineraries project is focused on the district of Sant Ildefons
one of the five most vulnerable districts in the entire Metropolitan Area of Barcelona
concrete-dominated neighborhood suffers from a severe lack of green space and thermal insulation
with its aging buildings worsening the situation
Greening in a children’s playground in Cornellà de Llobregat
Critical infrastructure has been mapped to pinpoint where mobility corridors could be created
residents have engaged in a ‘walking tour’ approach to share their mobility preferences
how heat affects their behavioural patterns and listen to proposals for adaptation measures
They expressed a desire for more water fountains and shaded benches located in the neighbourhood
Residents have already felt a positive impact from the small-scale actions undertaken by the City of Cornellà in the last two years such as pavement removal and urban greening
“The redesign of these spaces has reinforced the sense of community that has always been prevalent in Sant Ildefons
The district is now better equipped during warmer periods and there are more opportunities to mix socially
which improves residents’ quality of life and contributes to the growth of what has always been an interesting melting pot in Cornellà,” says Mattia Federico Leone
These proposed interventions—from small-scale actions to a complete climate-resilient redevelopment of streetscapes and public spaces—are poised to reduce Urban Heat Island conditions
improve outdoor and indoor climate shelters and deliver multiple socio-economic and environmental co-benefits to the local community
The implementation of the project will cover the initial step of the suggested phasing of interventions
Cornellà hopes to scale up this project and replicate it across the district – and beyond
we are really seeing a potential for it becoming a best practice case for many small and medium-sized cities in Europe which are part of larger metropolitan areas,” says Mattia Federico Leone
Climate KIC is committed to helping transform over 400 cities into thriving

Due to the loss of jobs and the complicated economic situation of the small owners
the City Council of Cornellà de Llobregat admitted its concern about a definitive closure of the Llobregat Centre after Christmas
the merchants who own less than half of the property of the shopping center share the municipal government’s uncertainty about the future of their jobs
Everything seems to indicate that in early January 2023
the mall will close its doors after more than 30 years of operation
a “closure plan” will be implemented
which will begin the progressive eviction of the businesses
in order to make a definitive closure on January 31
This would bring to an end the commercial activity of the center
The closing will take place immediately after the end of Christmas 2022
The local administration claims that in addition to concerns about job losses
another factor that influenced the decision was the emergence of a “private operator”
it is the real estate company Comercial Inversora
about which the City Council does not know what its purposes will be with the closure
The center is home to some twenty establishments
One of them is the Carrefour group’s supermarket
which operates on a 35,000-square-meter site with 1,600 parking spaces
one of the most prominent brands in the Cornellà Centre
is fighting the battle for some 90 of its workers who will be affected by the decision
They will seek to accommodate them in other centers close to the area
The City Council of Cornellà de Llobregat indicated that this closure is worrying both for the commercial consequences and for the loss of jobs
Especially for those owners who have bet on the mall since its inception
The owners’ board announced that as of January 8
it will begin the closure plan with progressive eviction
the final closure of the shopping center is scheduled for January 31 of next year
the Llobregat Centre has been a “reference” commercial space in the region
The City Council expresses its uncertainty and concern about the background of the decision and about the future of this area of great economic importance for the area and for the local economy
Further pronouncements on the future of this large surface area are expected

On Thursday at 9.00pm CET
FC Barcelona begin their Copa del Rey campaign with a game against third tier Unión Esportiva Cornellà
Here’s a closer look at the team that got here by knocking out none other than Atlético Madrid
Cornellà de Llobregat is a municipality on the south-west outskirts of metropolitan Barcelona
it is best known for being the site of RCD Espanyol’s current stadium
It’s also within walking distance of Barça’s Ciutat Esportiva training ground
UE Cornellà spent its entire existence in the fourth tier of Spanish football or below until 2014
when it won promotion to the third tier Division 2B for the first time
qualifying for the promotion playoffs in the last three seasons
Times have never been healthier at the club
during which time it also won its first Copa Catalunya title in 2018
The team wears green and white striped jerseys and green shorts
The Nou Estadi Municipal was opened in 2012 and is located just a few metres away from Espanyol’s stadium
When they played Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey in 2014
they borrowed Espanyol’s ground for the occasion
but the limited capacity won’t be an issue against Barça due to Covid-19 restrictions forbidding spectators
Cornellà’s youth system is so strong that it is sometimes regarded as Catalonia’s third biggest nursery of football talent after Barça and Espanyol. The most familiar of those products is Barça’s very own Jordi Alba, who spent two years there before getting signed up by Valencia
Indeed the meeting and video room at the ground is named after the player
and the club itself gained benefitted financially from his subsequent move from Valencia to the Camp Nou
Others include Senegal international Keita Baldé
Víctor Ruiz (Betis) and Enric Gallego (Osasuna)
This will be the first ever meeting between the teams
although Cornellà regularly play against Barça B
In fact they are currently in the same division
and Barça won 1-0 away when the sides met earlier this season
Konrad and Ilaix all featured in that game
in which Alex Collado scored the solitary goal
Last five league gamesRCD Espanyol B 1-0 UE Cornellà CF Badalona 3-0 UE Cornellà UE Cornellà 0-1 FC Barcelona B Nàstic de Tarragona 2-2 UE Cornellà UE Olot 2-2 UE Cornellà
After winning four of their first five games
Cornellà have now gone for six without a win in their eleven-team league group
As things stand that would mean going into one of the relegation groups for the latter part of the season
But they are just three points behind Barça B
so there is time yet for anything to happen
Copa del ReyTheir Copa del Rey run began with a 1-0 win at Marino in the Canary Islands
That earned them a high-profile match-up with Liga leaders Atlético Madrid
Diego Simeone was made to pay for opting to field a young and inexperienced side for that fixture
as Cornellà pulled off one of the biggest cupsets in recent memory
They won 1-0 to qualify for the round of 32 for only the second time in club history
Midfielder Albert Dorca also spent time in the Barça academy
forging a particularly close friendships with goalkeeper Victor Valdés and also playing in the same team a quiet
pale and raky young lad called Andrés Iniesta
went on to play for a host of different clubs
almost always in the Second Division to the extent that he is the player with the third highest number of appearances of all time in that category
Other more experienced players include centre back Borja García
who played top flight football for Racing Santander
and Rulo Prieto was on the Huesca side that won promotion to La Liga in 2018 but was transferred that summer
Midfielder Cristian Lobato (pictured below) played for Barça B and in 2011 joined the first team on its preseason US Tour
where he even got playing time under Pep Guardiola
As well as spell at Sporting Kansas City in MLS he has also played first division football for Osasuna
The club has a partnership arrangement with English Championship side Birmingham City
and Agus Medina and Iván Guzmán are both on loan from that club
Cornellà will be unable to field a full-strength side against Barça
while Covid-19 has also had an impact on some players
a local hero after scoring the winning goal against Atlético Madrid
He's picked up a nasty knee injury and is going to have to sit this one out
The team is coached by Guillermo Fernández
whose previous positions have included SD Ejea (Aragon)
CE Sabadell (Catalonia) and Olímpic Xàtiva (Valencia)
As European cities ramp up efforts to cut carbon emissions, local initiatives play a crucial role in the transition to lowering emissions. The Sustainable Cities Mobility Challenge

Portugal – Enhancing the Walkability.App
Promoting walking across Lisbon’s hilly landscape aligns with Portugal’s National Strategy for Active Pedestrian Mobility 2030
successful implementation requires scalable data on pedestrian habits and their walking environment
addresses this need and enables pedestrians to share experiences and inform new improvements
Lisbon plans to enhance the app with locals in mind
supporting its commitment to increase walking and halve emissions by 2030
The first phase focuses on improving the functionality of the app
including GDPR compliance and enabling citizens to attach images
The second phase involves conducting participatory walking assessments to identify areas requiring improvement for pedestrians followed by evaluation
analysis of the lessons learned and an assessment of its replication potential
Data collection on the experience of walking is essential for our understanding of the citizen pedestrian needs
developing the best policies and evaluating measures
This project will give us the opportunity to create better information and processes for transforming Lisbon into a city of excellence for walking

UK – The Greening Liverpool Project: Transforming urban spaces with sustainable solutions
Liverpool City Council faces urban challenges exacerbated by climate change
only 2 per cent of journeys in the region are made by bike or foot
contributing to carbon emissions and congestion
Recognising the need to slash carbon emissions and congestion
the Council declared a Climate Emergency in 2019
Leveraging expertise gained from previous EU-funded projects
the Greening Liverpool Project aims to deliver innovative
nature-based solutions to improve the local environment and encourage walking
The proposal includes installing trellis planters on Grafton Street
planting native hedges at Saint Brides Church
introducing permeable paving on Kent and Upper Pitt Streets
and native planting in Dingle’s Hill Street
Liverpool prides itself on innovation and we’re also looking at new ways to deliver greener methods in highways construction

The Netherlands – Transforming Car Parking Spaces: A Pop-Up Public Space Project
Utecht’s project proposes temporary pop-up elements in public spaces
with a particular focus on reimagining car parking spaces to advocate for sustainable urban design
By temporarily repurposing these spaces into green areas
the project will spark conversations about redefining public space and reducing car dominance in urban environments
Aligned with Utrecht’s Spatial Strategy 2040
the project aims to increase greenery and prioritise people and more sustainable mobility over motor vehicles
The greater goal is to encourage alternative transportation modes and community interaction
and demonstrate the potential for long-lasting changes in urban planning which reclaim space for both citizens and nature
By prioritising greenery and community spaces over car dominance
we’re reimagining the future of the city
and creating spaces that truly serve the needs of our residents and promote a sense of belonging

The bases of this new residential building are a matrix of communicating rooms that eliminates corridors to guarantee optimum use of the floor plan and the use of timber to enable the industrialization of elements
improved quality of construction and a major reduction of deadlines and C02 emissions
The building is organized around a courtyard that articulates a sequence of intermediate spaces
anticipating the doorway of the building and filtering the relationship between public space and the courtyard that acts as a small plaza for the community
The four vertical communication shafts are situated at the four corners of the courtyard so that all the occupants converge and meet in the plaza
which represents a safe space from a gender perspective
entry to the apartments is from the communication shaft and the private terraces that make up the ring of outdoor spaces that overlook the courtyard
The building’s general floor plan is a matrix of communicating rooms
eliminating both private and community corridors to make the maximum use of the floor space
The server spaces are laid out in the central ring
The surface area and proportion allow generous corners as a support that facilitates the appropriation of space
The structure is mainly determined by setting 3,60m short spans
multiple supports uphold CLT slabs: cross-laminated timber bearing walls in the façade and a system of laminated timber columns and beams in the centered bays
The structure is optimized by compensating momentums with multiple supports and cantilevers at all ends
In order to achieve economic feasibility in social housing
timber volume needed by built squared meter has been optimized down to 0,24m3/m2
The façade’s construction system and the structure joints are both solved by mechanical bonds
The exterior building skin is built up with electro welded wire mesh
holding/bearing sun shading and filtering sights
this element improve steadiness and at the same time it shapes the terrace’s handrail

The project consists of 85 social housingunits on a plot previously occupied by the emblematic Cinema Pisa in the city of Cornellà de Llobregat
It is a five-story freestanding building with a wood structure
resting on a ground level with a concrete structure for commercial use and public facilities
a portico open to the city anticipates the building’s entrance and filters the connection between public and community space that functions as a small plaza for the neighbors
Instead of entering directly and independently from the exterior facade to each lobby in the building
the four vertical communication cores are situated at the four corners of the courtyard
so all the neighbors converge and meet in the courtyard-plaza
In the typical plan one accesses the apartments through private terraces that form the crown of outdoor spaces flowing out onto the courtyard
The building’s general floor plan is organized in a matrix of connected rooms; that is
which eliminate both private and communal corridors to make the most of the floor area
The servant spaces are arranged in the central ring while the rest of the rooms
are placed along the facade proposing different ways of living
Another terrace on the outer crown completes the spatial sequence
the enfilade of spaces connected to one another by large openings that let in air and views
The 85 units are distributed in four groups and a total of 18 apartments per floor
Four or five dwellings are organized around the core
so all the different types have cross ventilation and double orientation
The apartments consist of five or six modules
depending on whether they are two- or three-bedroom units
The open and inclusive kitchen is in the central room
acting as a distributing piece that replaces the two corridors
making domestic work visible and avoiding gender roles
Aside from offering flexibility based on the ambiguity of use and functional freedom
the size of the rooms permits an optimum structural bay for the wood structure
to ensure economic viability the wood volume required per square meter has been optimized until reaching 0.24 m3 per m2 of built area

Barça make their 2020/21 Copa del Rey debut this Thursday against Cornellà in the Round of 16 at the Nou Municipal de Cornellà de Llobregat (9.00pm CET)
The first-team have never faced the side from Baix Llobregat in official competition
but they're a regular opponent for Barça's youth teams
This season three teams from La Masia have already played in Cornellà
The first were U19B: Oscar López's team won 0-2 on November 11 thanks to goals from Jordi Coca and Aleix Garrido
but Jaume Jardí equalised from the penalty spot and then Txus Alba scored a direct free-kick to make it 1-2
Cornellà managed to make it 2-2 before the break
but Alarcón's double took the game away from the hosts
even though they added another with the final move of the match
Barça B grabbed their win six days later on 20 December
Garcia Pimienta's team won 0-1 thanks to a direct free-kick by Alex Collado
and the trio could also play again against Cornellà this Thursday if Koeman decides to call them up
Suspect entered station in Cornellà de Llobregat near Barcelona ‘to attack officers’
Police in Catalonia have shot dead a man armed with a knife who attacked a police station on the outskirts of Barcelona
just three days after the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the city and coastal town of Cambrils
which police are treating as a terrorist incident
happened in the early hours of Monday in Cornellà de Llobregat on the southern edge of Barcelona
According to police the man entered the station just before 6am brandishing a knife and shouting: “God is great.” When the duty sergeant urged him to put the knife down he allegedly threw himself at a female officer and was shot dead
“It was clearly a case of premeditated homicide with intent to kill one of our officers,” Rafel Comes
“The individual mentioned Allah and for lack of any other motive for now we are treating it as a terrorist attack.”
The man was provisionally named as Abdelouahab Taib
an Algerian national with Spanish residency
The identification was based on documents found on his body
but police were also running a fingerprint check to confirm his identity
His fingerprints have also been sent to international agencies
Comes said there was nothing to connect him to the terrorist cell that carried out the attacks in Catalonia last summer
There were reports that Taib’s Spanish wife had left him a week before the incident
said an investigation had been opened and confirmed that the attack was being treated as an act of terrorism
The desk sergeant and female officer who witnessed the incident were being examined by the force’s psychology team
the post-traumatic effects often surface days or weeks later,” Comes said
In what appeared to be a reference to complaints of a lack of coordination between the various police forces during last summer’s attacks
Comes said that as soon as the incident occurred the information was shared with local and national forces
Sixteen people were killed on 17 August 2017 after a van drove into crowds on Barcelona’s popular Las Ramblas boulevard and a knife attack in the nearby resort of Cambrils
Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks, Spain’s worst since the Madrid train bombings in 2004 when 191 people died and more than 1,800 were injured
Spain has had its terrorist alert at the second-highest level since 2015
Catalonia has a long history of Islamic militant activity
A member of the Algerian Armed Islamic Group (GIA) was uncovered in the region in 1995
who flew a passenger plane into one of the World Trade Center on 11 September 2001
spent time in Catalonia shortly before the attacks
a plot targeting Barcelona’s metro system was foiled when it was in its advanced stages
One in four people detained in Spain over extremist Muslim-linked terrorism come from the province of Barcelona in Catalonia, according to a study published last year by the Real Instituto Elcano
which called the province the country’s “main centre of jihadist activity”

The image shows one of the first co-creation sessions organized with young people
when schools were closed and social leisure spaces were limited
children and adolescents were among the most seriously affected groups as they experienced increased anxiety
mental health problems and greater exposure to domestic and online violence
According to the statistics (The Alliance for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action
the risk of suffering from or witnessing violence increased by 30% in this group during the COVID-19 pandemic
a team at the Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona Children's Hospital saw the need to create and regain safe community spaces for children and young people in order to prevent violence
The RESCCUE: REcover Spaces for traumatized Children in CommUnity sEttings post COVID-19 project
which is funded by the European Commission
aims to regain safe spaces in order to prevent and detect violence against children and adolescents
The project seeks to involve the young people themselves
the primary healthcare system and the mental health system
"We want to empower young people and children in order to reduce their exposure to situations of violence
while at the same time providing education professionals and families with tools to prevent this violence and support victims," said Mar Alvarez
a psychiatrist at the Cornellà Centre for Child and Youth Mental Health of the Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona Children's Hospital
The participants in the project include Cornellà de Llobregat City Council
through its Department of Equality Policies
which has helped actively involve a group of young people from Joan Miró secondary school and Riera Centre and Sant Ildefons young people's spaces in co-designing the materials for the project
"It was very important to validate the activities and materials with young people
because we always design the projects that are intended for them from the perspective of adults
and then we find that the message doesn't reach them," explained the Deputy Mayor for Social Policies
Equality and Health of Cornellà City Council
and identified the roles involved," she added
A series of innovative educational resources have been designed to promote peer learning as a result of the co-creation sessions
"Based on all the information, we decided to design a board game as an effective strategy for raising awareness among teenagers. After talking to the young people, we ruled out producing an app, precisely because it would mean spending more time looking at a screen," said UOC faculty member and Edul@b principal investigator Montse Guitert
and the aim is to provide it in open access so that schools can download it
print it and use it in their classrooms in the future
The first pilot phase will be carried out in secondary schools in Cornellà de Llobregat during the 2023/2024 school year
and all the pupils at the schools will be actively involved
Workshops for professionals in the education community will also be provided
which will focus on self-care and building bridges with adolescents to create safe spaces
Sessions with families who are experiencing situations of domestic violence or cyberbullying will be an integral part of the project
These spaces will focus on family dynamics
providing support and tools to deal with these complex situations
and ensuring a safe environment for adolescents and young people
The transfer of the methodology will be measured with a pilot test in Rome carried out by the team at the Bambino Gesù Paediatric Hospital

This building by Peris + Toral in Cornellà de Llobregat
proves that affordable social apartment houses can be innovative
The facade follows a strict grid all the way around
The outer skin consists of hot-galvanized grids that alternate with the wooden shades typical of Barcelona and offer protection from the heat in summertime
Marta Toral and José Peris take the strict grid of the facade to extremes in the floor plans
They consist entirely of equally sized squares with an edge length of 3,60 m that can flow together to form larger spaces according to residents’ wishes
The heart of each flat is always the kitchen
around which the other rooms – which have not been assigned specific uses – are grouped
the project is unconventional not only conceptually
the building is made completely of wood – a rarity in Spain
Even the stairwells have been made of this material
The base level alone is of poured concrete
all the load-bearing components are of wood
The undersides of the balconies have been left visible
most of the supporting structure has been covered up to ensure fire protection and soundproofing
The wood remains exposed on just a few ceilings
The supporting structure was conceived so that the cross-sections of the supports could be as small as possible
the connections between the columns and beams can easily be taken apart
This makes it possible to return the individual building components to the material cycle once the structure has reached the end of its life cycle

B.A.A
has collaborated with Spanish club UE Cornella which is based in Cornella de Llobregat
and is an affiliate of the Spanish Football Association
BAA will organize camps for players and coaches
organize and provide opportunities for short and long-term personal experience at UE Cornella for the players as well as implement the UE Cornella technical curriculum into their program
The latest well known player to pass through the UE Cornella program is CFValencia left back Jordi Alba
Alba has made 2 appearances with the Spanish national team under Vicente del Bosque with the latest appearance against England at Wembley last weekend
said: “This is another step in moving the club forward and it’s one of our Goals to build strategic partnerships both domestically and aboard
We have had a couple of other opportunities but we were looking for a partnership that was the right fit for B.A.A
– Here it is – and what an exciting prospect
“Both clubs are very much aligned in their approach to football and child development on a broader scope
This opportunity is immense as it not only gives our children more technical development but will also give them academic and life skills – Geographically
and Socially – They will learn so much from integrating with other children and will bring bonds and experiences that will last them a lifetime
“Bermuda will benefit much from this partnership
and our sponsors – especially Lindo’s -without their support the program would not be what it is today and finally to Kenny for making this a reality
said “I am pleased and extremely proud of this relationship with UECornella which provides a unique opportunity for all of our players to continue their football
social and cultural development with a top football club in a top football environment
“This collaboration creates a very realistic step by step pathway for the players to maximize their potential
Our partnership offers players additional and necessary exposure in a top quality and challenging training and match environment that is required for their optimal development
“As we continue to provide an environment whereby we develop and nurture players to maximize their potential
our coaches will also benefit in the same way from regular exposures and associations with our friends at UECornella through coach development opportunities
“We are excited for this opportunity for players and coaches
It is with great pleasure to be working with UECornella

In spite of the nonsensical things Blatter says it is true with in the FIFA statutes themselves not to mention the statues of the local FA’s there is anti-discrimination policies
So from that point of view Mr Blatter can say what he likes because it has no effect on what is actually being done in the game
Besides he was just elected with 186 votes out of 205 I think you can take that to mean he has the full support of the local FAs and the ridiculous comments he makes clearly have no impact on that support
apparently Clyde Best has stood above the rest and addressed this matter in his column
