The recent DANA (isolated high-altitude depression) has brought a much-needed boost to Almería’s water reserves
especially in the drought-stricken Almanzora Valley
Heavy rainfall over several days almost doubled the water volume of the Cuevas del Almanzora reservoir
increasing its level from 10.77 hm³ to 20.79 hm³
which has been battling water scarcity for years
the reservoir still holds less than last year’s figure of 21.94 hm³ for the same period
underscoring the ongoing challenges in maintaining sustainable water levels
While the Cuevas del Almanzora reservoir benefited from the rainfall
the situation in Poniente Almeriense was less fortunate
the Benínar reservoir saw only a modest rise
Poniente Almeriense was hit by severe hailstorms
resulting in widespread agricultural damage
over 4,000 hectares of greenhouses suffered damage
affecting crops and structures essential to the region’s economy
While the rain has temporarily improved water reserves
authorities caution that continued rainfall is essential for both reservoirs and agriculture
The recent storms offer a reminder of Almería’s vulnerability to drought and the importance of sustainable water management to support both residents and the agricultural economy

Mazarrón marked a historic day on November 28 with the official twinning of three emblematic municipalities: Mazarrón
the last two being municipalities in the province of Almería
which according to Mazarrón Town Hall itself was “full of sentiment”
represents a union that “transcends borders and reaffirms the ties of a common past linked to mining”
The event was attended by the Mayor of Mazarrón
accompanied by councillors from the respective municipal corporations and numerous residents who did not want to miss this unique moment
The day was a sincere tribute to the miners who worked in the mines of Mazarrón
especially remembering those who lost their lives or suffered illnesses as a result of their harsh working conditions
in addition to paying tribute to those who dedicated their lives to mining
symbolises the beginning of a close collaboration between the three municipalities
highlighted the importance of this twinning
“Today we pay tribute to the miners who marked our history with their effort and sacrifice
but we are also building a shared future between Mazarrón
He also highlighted the opportunity that this agreement represents to strengthen ties in areas such as tourism
“This twinning symbolises our willingness to work together to preserve our historical memory and strengthen the heritage that connects us as sister towns.”
“Today we are not only paying tribute to those who worked in the mines and left an indelible legacy
but we are also committed to building a present and a future of collaboration and progress for our municipalities.”
the work of those who promoted the first Mining Week was also recognised
a pioneering event that highlighted the mining history of the region and served as a starting point for this twinning
Vera and Cuevas del Almanzora reaffirm their commitment to honour their shared history while opening new doors for joint progress
“It is a day that will remain engraved in the memory of our municipalities
because we not only reflect on the past with pride
but we move forward with hope towards the future,” concluded Ginés Campillo

The infant mortality figures recorded by the Royal Spanish Lifesaving Federation (RFESS) are devastating. Every year more than thirty children die in Spain as a result of drowning. "And the worst thing is that the vast majority of deaths could have been avoided if adequate precautions had been taken both before and during bathing," warn the experts.
When it comes to children and water there is no better safety policy than "permanent adult supervision". In this sense, lifeguard experts advise appointing a person to be responsible for watching the children and for those adults to take turns doing so. That way they can avoid omissions or misunderstandings such as 'I thought they were with their grandmother' or 'I thought their aunt was looking after them'.

"The person in charge of supervising children has to focus on keeping watch. No more answering a WhatsApp, flicking through the pages of a book or chatting with the person next to them. Thirty per cent of children who have died from drowning were not being supervised by an adult", was the stark warning from those in charge at the National Association for Child Safety.
Experts advise following the 10/20 rule to prevent children drowning. This is a surveillance strategy that requires the adult in charge of monitoring the children to look to the water at least every 10 seconds and have the children within arm's reach only at a distance that can be covered within a maximum of 20 seconds.

the experts also recommend "avoiding hair staying loose
ropes or anything else that could be sucked into the pool
it is advisable for all adults to know the location of the pool's main power shut-off so that they can act quickly in the event of someone being trapped."

Almeria's papaya campaign has just started
"We are starting with few volumes because there is still very little ripe fruit
its quality is exceptional with 9 to 11 Brix degrees," stated Pepe Montiel
which specializes in the production of organic exotics
Spanish papaya has the advantage of being a proximity product
with a minimum carbon footprint when compared to the imported papaya
as it can be delivered to any place in Europe in just three days after its harvested," Pepe stated
we are facing a problem because of an aesthetic issue."
"The papayas grown in Almeria develop some dark spots on their skin because
unlike the fruit from Brazil that grows in a tropical climate
the temperature in the middle of winter in a greenhouse in Almeria can reach 35 degrees by day and drop to 5 at night
These spots only affect the fruit visually; in no case do they affect its quality."
we are observing the Spanish fruit is being rejected for its spots in some markets
We also see some reluctance in the Netherlands
although in Germany there seems to be a greater understanding of the spots on the skin of papayas
it seems that the only problem is that there is a lack of information.”
"We must succeed in communicating to the markets that the spots on the skin of the Spanish papaya are not a problem
but a characteristic; just like the banana of the Canary Islands managed to be recognized by all consumers for its dark spots
turning what could be a defect into a virtue."
"It's a real pity that papayas are being brought by plane from thousands of kilometers away and that the fruits that are grown on the continent itself are being rejected
When imported papayas arrive at the airport they already have a fairly high additional cost
which is grown complying with all the European requirements and standards
is already on the continent and is harvested with a greater point of maturity," Pepe stated
"Europe has to decide if it wants an imported papaya or a European papaya with a lower carbon footprint"According to IFAPA's 'Potential crops to diversify agricultural production in Andalusia' report
there is a real demand from the sector in the search for profitable crops and with a commercial outlet in a context in which more than 75% of the area dedicated to the cultivation of horticultural species
both in the open fields and in greenhouses
and cucumber (2020 Agricultural Statistics Yearbook)
"If we consider the case of subtropical coastal crops
even though there is a wide variety of fruits
avocado and mango account for more than 80% of the area cultivated with tropical fruits," the report adds
Papaya cultivation in Almeria is still in its infancy; however
it represents a great opportunity to diversify production in the greenhouses of the province
“Producers are looking to grow a product they can live from and papaya can be a very interesting option
Europe has to test and decide whether it wants imported papaya or an exceptional quality European papaya with no carbon footprint."
“Almanzora Tropical's organic papayas will be available from December to June.”

In addition to the wide range of vegetables and fruits produced in Almeria
which have turned the province into the Andalusian leader in agri-food exports
are sharing space in the campaign with the traditional supply
Pitahaya and passion fruit from Almanzora Tropical
We have less than a month left to finish the harvest and in a few weeks we will start with the pitahaya and passion fruit," says Pepe Montiel
"The pitahaya in particular has already started to flower and just yesterday we pollinated 200 flowers
we hope to have a production at least like last year's
The campaign will start in about a month and will last until November
we are going to start in the second half of July and
during its first campaign (because it has a second campaign lasting until May)
it will share the shelves with pitahaya until October."
which will allow us to work in a different market line this season
and we are also working on obtaining the Bio Suisse certification," says Pepe
the market prices will determine the results."
"The papaya campaign has generally gone well
but we have not seen the improvement of prices that there should have been
taking into account the increase in costs that we producers have suffered." Pepe says that prices have risen for all the products that we consume; however
this has not been reflected in the purchase prices at origin
"which is resulting in producers obtaining very limited profit margins."
"We shouldn't forget that we have a local production in the European market that complies with the EU's strict phytosanitary regulations and that it must be priced based on its value
pitahaya is being brought from Mexico or Brazil by plane and arrives at Mercamadrid costing almost 8 Euro per kilo
a well-known Spanish supermarket offered me 3.5 Euro per kilo for my pitahayas
and only for those of a certain caliber and pulp color
It is an inconsistency that while in Europe we are told to consume local products
supermarkets set conditions for local producers that are difficult to meet
without understanding that not only do they need to cover their expenses
"It is true that the Spanish production of exotic fruits such as papaya or pitahaya is not enough to supply the market
but it should be possible to increase the production
to strengthen the sector and to contribute to boosting consumption
the potential for exotic fruit production in areas such as Palomares
The cultivation of exotic fruits would allow producers to do away with the uncertainty caused by the poor profitability of traditional products such as lettuce or watermelon
and make it possible for new generations to continue choosing to work in agriculture."
I encourage producers here to try growing papaya
one grower has decided to plant a 2,000-meter greenhouse
and in October it will start producing fruit that I'm going to help him market through my customers."
“Agriculture is not only a basis for economic livelihood
it is much more; it is also a way for physical and emotional sustenance
and it has to receive the appreciation it deserves
pitahaya and passion fruit can help achieve this in Almeria's Levante area,” says Pepe
There appeared to be three distinct bastions of them nearby
What they appeared to have in common was simply living in caves
The casting of spells and outrageous behaviour in public wasn’t a constant in their demeanour
Much unlike George Borrow’s famous book concerning their living styles (a scandalous bestseller back in the 1840s) that shocked the world and forever painted them in vibrant scarlet colors
About 30 days ago the French embassy published at its expense copious copies of my brother Paul’s book concerning oral histories of the gypsies in Bosnia and Kosovo
two years ago when we were lunching one afternoon in Turre and asked the familiar owner “who living in Turre might give the most interesting histories concerning the gypsy race?” he took an abrupt step back and announced “there are no more gypsies here
none that would answer such question as being as such.” Our mutual listening jaws bounced off of the table top
Forty years of knowing differently smacked us between the eyes and nothing could stop either of us from blinking constantly
shell-shocked and absolutely gobsmacked in sheer disbelief
In the back of my mind I chuckled and reflected concerning my friend Martin De Bruin’s golf driving range at Cortijo Grande
Much needed at the time it had the longevity of three days as all the bright yellow balls disappeared at night before they could be rounded up by the morning tractor
In the afternoons those same golf balls were traded for drinks and tapas around town
And I remembered when the Junta Andalucia invited the famed guitarist Tomatito to play the winter cultural circuit
he wasn’t allowed on stage as a few of the locals jumped up and announced “in Turre only we will play flamenco
we don’t need an outsider.” And the international acclaimed artist went away without playing even one short rift
I was hugely disappointed as having built houses and invited all the local Turre folk groups to come to the roof raising lunches
bring their guitars and great fun always ensued; here
one of the world’s most popular performers wasn’t allowed to demonstrate his profession to this backward town in much need of some originality
I had grown endlessly tired of hearing the same seven songs sung by all the different ensembles we invited)
What an eye opener it would have been for the local residents too
I stomped away listening to the same old same old lilting crescendos blurt from the school
I had grown to hate their music… just that night
The Spanish region of Andalusia has become the great tropical orchard of Europe
the subtropical fruit supply for the continent
Andalusian producers are moving forward not only in terms of product diversification
"In a few days we will start with the harvest of our organic papayas and passion fruit," says Pepe Montiel
of the Almeria-based company Almanzora Tropical
"This year's production will amount to between 100,000 and 150,000 kilos of papaya and 5,000-6,000 kilos of passion fruit
which we will mainly ship to the European market."
Almanzora Tropical is specialized in the organic cultivation of papayas
three fruits that have set a precedent in Cuevas de Almanzora
I decided to venture into tropical fruit production
I spent months collecting information from both the Cajamar experimental farm and the CSIC La Mayora Institute regarding the different tropical crops that could be produced here
You can't undertake any project and be successful without first having the right information
so after carrying out a study with the data that was available
I picked the three fruits I wanted to work with," says Pepe
there were no tropicals and I was the first to start with them
we carried out a first test with 80 papaya plants
20 passion fruit plants and as many pitahaya plants
We obtained good results the following year and since then we have been increasing the plantings until we achieved the current production levels."
"All three crops are doing very well and the climate in this area allows us to obtain very good quality fruit," says Pepe
pitahaya is grown under netting and papayas are grown under plastic
because here there are no bats to pollinate the flowers
so we pollinate the flowers one by one every day at dawn during the flowering period
We have the organic certification for our papayas and pitahayas and next year we will also have one for our passion fruit
Those who work in organic production are specialists
both at the production level and at the marketing level."
we are doing very little in the domestic market for now
and our production is being allocated for export to Europe
where there are very good distribution channels for organic products," says Pepe Montiel
where organic food consumption reaches very good levels
although we also want to start working with the catering channel and with gourmet stores in Spain."
A new alternative and a new hopeThe pitahaya season
during which Almanzora Tropical has produced 10,000 kilos of the three red-skinned varieties it grows
right before the start of the papaya and passion fruit campaign in December
These crops not only represent an alternative to Almeria's traditional products
which have been affected by price and profitability crises in recent years
They also bring hope to the youngest in a sector in which
the lack of generational replacement is a cause for concern
He is working and learning alongside the manager and is taking control of the business
I am very happy with his decision and the wonderful goal he has set for himself
and I will support him in everything he needs."
Murcia and even in Valencia there are more and more producers planting papaya
It would be a very good idea for us all to come together and create an association for the marketing of our products
Together we could become stronger and make more of an impact," says Pepe Montiel
Spain’s reservoirs are showing a mixed picture as recent rainfall has boosted national water reserves
but disparities remain stark across regions
yet while some areas are experiencing overflows
The Community of Madrid is among the best-supplied
with reservoirs reaching 86.3 per cent capacity
a dramatic 14.62 per cent increase in just a week
Navarre’s reserves now stand at 87.6 per cent
with a smaller 1.46 per cent increase over the past week
Cantabria and Asturias also report healthy levels at 65 per cent and 75.8 per cent
home to some of Spain’s largest reservoirs
ensuring more stability for the region’s water supply
The Valencian Community is also struggling
one of the hardest-hit regions by drought in recent months
still below safe levels despite recent rains
reflecting the persistent water shortages in the province despite national improvements
While some areas are releasing excess water to prevent overflows
others are preparing for continued drought
Authorities stress the need for long-term investment in water storage and distribution
ensuring that rainfall benefits are maximised rather than lost
Spain faces the dual challenge of handling excess water in some regions while securing sustainable supplies in others

The start of the outdoor watermelon harvest campaign marks the beginning of summer
The Agrarian Association of Young Farmers (ASAJA) has visited the area of Cuevas de Almanzora to observe the quality and harvest of the watermelon crops and to find out what the estimates for this campaign are
"This year we are starting the campaign with good expectations because there are no production problems
we have a good volume and excellent quality," stated Adoración Blanque
we expect favorable rates for the outdoor watermelon campaign
which started a week late due to the weather conditions in spring
farmers will start harvesting the product at the end of this week with relative calm and even stability
and they hope prices remain good throughout the campaign," stated Asaja Almeria
producers in this area stated the planted area has decreased by nearly 10% due to water scarcity and because the previous campaign was terrible in terms of prices paid to farmers and their profitability
Producers are also stressed about the 30% increase in costs
The white (striped) and black watermelon continue to prevail because of their endurance in export and great flavor
"This visit allowed us to verify the magnificent quality of this harvest
We expect the price of these first cuts will be favorable and we hope prices remain at this level throughout the campaign," Adoracion Blanque stated
The campaign in the area of Cuevas de Almanzora will last for about a month
after which it will continue in the area of Murcia and Levante
ASAJA recalled that the outdoor watermelon campaign in Almeria will run until August
so there is still a lot of product to be collected

Some 30 different groups have indicated that they will take part in the parade and based on past experience
the organisers are expecting around 10,000 spectators to arrive in the town
Announcing the programme and unveiling the special poster on February 2
reminded everyone of the importance of the carnival to the town and looking back to the Franco era explained that even though at some stages these events were banned
Cuevas continued to enjoy its own brand of carnival

20 years of work have culminated in the Bodega Sierra Almagrera winning the internationally recognised ‘Wines from Spain Awards 2025
It is one of the highest national awards a wine or bodega can be granted and they won it for their bottle Caballo Español Oro
Cuevas del Almanzora is uniquely placed in an area that has not previously been well-established wine country
Mónica García Bodini said: “We are at a point in Almeria where we do not even have a region identified as a wine producer
We are the only winery that makes wine between Cuevas del Almanzora and Antas
“The owner of the winery describes setting the place up in this zone as “a very exciting adventure”
The award given by the ‘Wines from Spain Awards’ is from a collaborative project between ICEX Vinos de España and Mundus VINI GmbH
it is an international competition for wines from Spain directed in Germany
Caballo Español Oro is made with grapes from Cuevas del Almanzora
Antas and Laujar of Andarax and is matured in the winery at Burjulú
owner of Bodega Sierra Almagara has said that the award “is a testament to the effort and passion we put into each bottle”

EXPERTS are inspecting El Realengo area of Cuevas del Almanzora and expect that by the end of this week to discover the cause of the landslide in which three people in a cave used as a house were killed
They died when a 20-metre embankment located above their home in the Realengo district collapsed
covering the cave house in tonnes of rocks and earth in the early hours of last Friday
The victims’ bodies were found late Friday night and in the early hours of Saturday. Firemen who took part in the rescue say that they most probably died instantly and without suffering
in their early 20. Another two of Jose Manuel’s children were unhurt
while his wife was taken to Huercal Overa Hospital in a serious but stable condition
police and locals as she was trapped to the waist amongst the rubble
including authorities from throughout the Levante Almeriense area
attended the funeral which was held at the Iglesia de la Encarnacion
The town hall called for three days of mourning. Another man who lived nearby sustained a slight injury and had to undergo surgery
Inspections of the area are now being carried out to see if it is safe for other inhabitants of the caves to return to their homes
and what measures have to be taken to prevent further landslides
People were allowed to enter their homes with firemen to collect some of their belongings before the area was closed off
Guardia Civil and Local Police remain in the area
Five other houses were affected by the landslide
and at the time of going to print three families were still at a local hotel. Cuevas Mayor Jesus Caicedo returned to the area earlier this week to talk to local residents and ask them to remain calm
He thanked everyone who had helped in the rescue operation and said that he hoped that support from the administrations would continue because the town hall couldn’t deal with the problem alone
He has also asked for help from private companies. “We will get money from wherever we have to” the mayor said
“but the area will be repaired”. Technicians from the Junta de Andalucia Delegation of Public Works and from the government sub-delegation in Almeria
as well as an expert from a private company
were accompanied by the local councillor for urban planning
Juan Jose Perez Celdran during an inspection of the area
The landslide could have been caused by a variety of factors
from the type of rocks and the amount of rain
to seismic activity and the direction of cracks in the terrain
or due to human activity such as deforestation or building with heavy materials on weak terrain
With the terrain in the area of the caves being sandy it is not unusual for landslides to occur
the Cuevas del Almanzora Town Council has successfully secured permission to establish a dog-friendly beach along its coastline
the Ministry of the Environment has given the green light for the adaptation of a stretch at Cala de la Invincible
beneath the Sierra Almagrera and next to to the former Blanquizares barracks
is now set to become the first canine beach in the Levante region of Almeria
The designated area stretches just over 230 metres of fine sand and crystal-clear water. Already, preparations are underway to adapt the beach with the necessary signage and facilities that comply with animal welfare and coastal regulations. These measures will ensure a safe, enjoyable environment where visitors can freely bring their pets
explained that the City Council works daily
not only to comply with the most recent regulations on animal welfare but also to improve the lives of pets and their owners by giving them more and better spaces for their recreation
as well as supporting initiatives that aim to care for and protect animals
This development marks a significant advancement in public spaces dedicated to pet-friendly activities within Cuevas del Almanzora, following the opening of the first dog park in 2021
Municipalities across the Almanzora Valley and Eastern Almeria are bringing in water restrictions due to escalating drought conditions
Among the latest to join this initiative is Vera, in the Levante area. It follows other localities such as Albox
and Lubrin in imposing stringent water usage measures
incuding a daily limit of 200 litres per person
The Junta de Andalucia has officially declared the region
as being in a ‘severe and exceptional drought’
A decree has been issued demanding ‘responsible, supportive and efficient’ use of water
along with managers of public and private entities
are urged to check for leaks and apply all feasible measures to minimise unnecessary water consumption
and pools in tourist accommodations registered with the Junta de Andalucia
Further restrictions include the closure of public showers and the prohibition of car washing
Ornamental fountains without a closed water circuit are also banned
The guidelines do allow the use of non-potable water for essential irrigation of public spaces and golf courses
limited to 200 cubic metres per hectare monthly
Local Police are empowered to monitor and ensure compliance
This collective effort underscores the critical need to conserve water amidst the worsening drought situation
HIROSHIMA and Nagasaki: The only two occasions in history when nuclear weapons were used in combat
But who remembers the time America accidentally bombed Spain
The 1966 Palomares B-52 crash occurred on 17 January when an American bomber collided with a refuelling tanker over the Mediterranean Sea
one of which fell into the Mediterranean and was recovered intact two months later
The remaining three landed near Palomares in Cuevas del Almanzora
The first bomb fell safely when its parachute opened
but the conventional explosives in the other two detonated and created a ‘dirty bomb’
a two-square-kilometre area in Cuevas del Almanzora (mostly residential areas
farmlands and woods) was contaminated with radioactive material
After a significant clean-up operation by the Americans
the US moved 1,700 tonnes of contaminated soil to South Carolina for burial
The Spanish were rightly concerned about the impact of the event on its burgeoning tourist industry
and the American ambassador to bathe in the sea to prove the waters were safe
taking place at the height of the Cold War
save for Spain prohibiting NATO aircraft to fly over Spanish territory either to or from Gibraltar
In 2004 a study revealed that there was still some significant contamination present
including snails with strange levels of radioactivity
The Spanish government subsequently took control of the contaminated land
and dialogue with the Americans reopened as to the cost of continued cleaning operations
No indication of health issues has been established among the local population in Palomares since
but it’s been claimed many died from cancer as a result of the contamination
U.S airmen involved in the clean-up suffered crippling illnesses and death related to radiation exposure
agreed to clean up the contaminated area and “store the contaminated earth at a suitable location in the United States”
Time magazine called the accident one of the world’s “worst nuclear disasters”
although it’s subtly recalled by a street called “17 January 1966”
the flight originated from Morón Air Base in Spain
Although the central government originally authorised the transfer from Valencia province
Environment minister Teresa Ribera has now suspended the project
According to reports in the provincial Spanish media
this was the result of political pressure from Valencia’s regional government
The Aguas del Almanzora irrigation syndicate
which was prepared to pay €15 million for 50 cubic hectometres of water over the next five years
expressed their disappointment when deal fell through
was knowing that the Ministry had earlier ordered the release of 73 cubic hectometres of water from the Tous reservoir in Valencia province to prevent flooding
will now have to look elsewhere for solutions and irrigation water
The Cuevas del Almanzora desalination plant is still inoperative following flood damage 10 years ago and they must now rely on aquifers or ruinously expensive desalinated water from the Acuamed plant in Carboneras
Mojacar’s long-requested and much-needed dogs-allowed beach will become a reality this year
Mayor Fran Garcia Cerda confirmed that the project had received official authorisation and dog-owners would soon be able to use a section of Mojacar’s Perulejo beach
Cuevas del Almanzora is the only other municipality in Almeria’s Levante area that allows dogs on one of its beaches
but Garcia Cerda pointed out at this beach
was only 230 metres long and had a small parking area
“The Cuevas beach is uncomfortable and inaccessible,” the mayor said
Mojacar town hall announced that it had sought authorisation from the coastal authorities to use part of the publicly-owed maritime strip as a canine beach up to December 2027
giving the public three weeks to lodge possible objections to the beach equipped with showers and wastebins with “poop bag” dispensers
Local animal protection associations have recommended using the section of beach near Macenas Castle
and the beach is rarely used by swimmers,” they said
suggesting that the stretch between the castle as far as the beach bar would be ideal for dogs
“They have been neglecting us little by little and now they’ve left us without medical attention altogether,” declared Antonio Collado
speaking to the Spanish media on behalf of Existimos
but now there is no doctor at all,” Collado said. “We have been abandoned for three months
especially the elderly who have to go 15 kilometres to see a doctor.”
which is Cuevas del Almazora’s coastal area
“The service started to become precarious months ago when the doctor came once or twice but now
they ring to tell you it’s been cancelled because there’s no doctor.”
The only alternative is a phone consultation but for a face- to-face visit
15 kilometres way. Existimos is now collecting signatures
asking the region’s SAS health service to reopen the Villaricos centre as a “matter of urgency.”

Malaga is still without its Directorate-General for Traffic helicopter which is used to monitor the roads and catch out some of the worst offending drivers in the province
The aircraft has been out of action after it crashed into a tree in August when the pilot was taking lunch at a restaurant in Andalucía's Almeria province
based at the Malaga traffic management centre
was on its way to perform surveillance and control duties at a music festival Dreambeach Villaricos in Cuevas del Almanzora when it suffered the accident at the Cortijo Blanco in La Mojonera on Friday 11 August
The helicopter clipped the tree after it kicked up a large dust cloud
The pilot sustained minor injuries in the accident
It was the only aircraft of its type allocated to Malaga province and was equipped with a sophisticated aerial video surveillance system that was used to monitor the roads and catch offending drivers
A DGT spokesperson confirmed to SUR that there is currently no aircraft monitoring traffic in Malaga
and there is no date for a replacement to arrive
which would usually be the one at the Seville base
is also currently not operational as it is awaiting a mandatory overhaul
meaning the Andalucía region has no service of this kind at the moment
In the case of a major incident on the roads
a DGT helicopter would need to travel from Madrid
The news comes as various sources have told SUR that the lack of a DGT helicopter is affecting road safety on the Costa del Sol
where there is a high concentration of sports car and high-end vehicles and serious speeding offences are common
the DGT said it is now using two drones to make up for the helicopter's absence
SUR put this question to several experts who said that it is difficult to catch the most serious offending drivers without a Pegasus-equipped helicopter
the helicopter can cover a much bigger area and remain in the air longer," said a Guardia Civil officer
the Pegasus equipment is able to see the number plate
and monitor the use of mobile phones and seat belts...
drones are no substitute for helicopters," he added
After the incident involving the DGT helicopter based in Malaga
it would have been expected that the damaged one be repaired or replaced
in the lack of a supply contract for spare parts
There is allegedly no option to order the parts directly from Eurocopter
which is also the issue keeping the aircraft in Seville grounded
the Malaga aircraft is seriously damaged and will need to be repaired or replaced by another one "but there are no spare parts or contract for parts," sources said
In addition to the lack of budget for maintenance
a trade union source pointed out more reasons: "Behind this there is a strategy to privatise the helicopter supply and maintenance service throughout Spain
a contract worth several million euros that now
ARCHIVED - Police break-up mass party in Cuevas del Almanzora where Covid rules were being ignored" style="margin: 5px 10px 5px 0px; float: left" width="100%" />
The police have identified the two organisers of a huge illegal party broken up in the early hours of Sunday morning in the Cuevas del Almanzora countryside in Almeria province and reported dozens of partygoers for flouting anti-coronavirus safety measures
Officers were sent out to check on an event being held at an estate in the Guazamara area
the police force in Almería reported
only to find more than 300 people in attendance
the majority of whom were ignoring restrictions and safety measures
the estate was supposedly hired for an event with 20 participants but news of the party spread like wildfire on social media and hundreds turned up
Events of this type are currently under the spotlight as many of the increasing numbers of Covid cases across Spain are believed to be stemming from illegal gatherings and ‘botellones’ or drinking parties
With the highly contagious Delta variant of the virus now rearing its ugly head
youngsters who have yet to be vaccinated and tend to throw caution to the wind after a few drinks are increasingly testing positive after attending this sort of party

Spain's El Corte Inglés department store's summer 2024 publicity campaign is all about Almeria in Andalucía.
Firstly, Rocío Crusset, a well-known model and daughter of Mariló Montero and Carlos Herrera, a journalist from Almeria born in Cuevas del Almanzora, is modelling the department store's new swimwear range. Crusset adopted her father's second surname as her 'stage name' so that she would not be associated with her famous parents.
As a model and influencer, Rocío has followed in her mother's footsteps into the world of modelling and fashion. She is the protagonist of Summertime, a selection of brands that offer "everything you need to succeed this summer with the swimwear trends that will be a hit in 2024".
The campaign was filmed and photographed in the Cabo de Gata natural park where Playazo de Rodalquilar beach can easily be identified.
The turquoise waters of the Almeria coast can be seen, with Crusset and other models posing in the collection in front of the iconic dunes that surround the beach, where the San Miguel castle stands guarding the coast. A large poster featuring Crusset and the paradisiacal coast of Almeria has also been launched.
