Rocío Dúrcal is an icon: A catlike diva from Spain whose passionate embrace of Mexican music made her a beloved figure among Hispanic audiences
Her recording of Juan Gabriel’s “Amor Eterno” is an undisputed classic
Shaila Dúrcal carries on in the tradition of her mother
She has recorded several of her mom’s hits through the years
and is touring the States with a show dubbed “Homenaje a Mi Madre,” or “A Tribute to My Mother.” It’s a difficult juggling act: She wants to ensure that her mom’s legacy lives on
but she also wants to carve out her own identity
“It’s challenging sometimes,” says Dúrcal
And I get it: I’m kind of like her physically
I’m proud and happy to continue her legacy
but I want to teach them I’m a different person.”
Dúrcal bares an uncanny resemblance to her mother
both physically and in the dusky timbre of her voice
especially considering how Dúrcal was raised
A show-biz upbringing“I knew I wanted to be a singer by the age of 4,” Dúrcal says
“I spent my afternoons in the recording studio with my mom and I always imagined I was going to be a singer.”
Some children of celebrities take the experience for granted
“I noticed everything about my mom,” she says
“I loved watching how she dressed and how she put on her gowns
was a Filipino singer who gained fame in the ‘60s as an early rock-and-roller in Spain
He stopped performing in the late ‘70s to raise Dúrcal and her two siblings and to manage his wife’s career
“I have so much of my father in me,” Dúrcal says
It has a certain sweetness and a more mellow tone than my mom
Her mom never had a good grasp of the language: “She tried to fake it,” she says
Dúrcal has lived a very international life
Los Angeles and Miami before settling in Houston with her husband
She toured with her mother as a backing singer
she records both pop material and full-throated Mexican weepers
2015’s “Shaila Dúrcal,” is particularly adventurous
adding elements of American country music and urban flavors against mariachi horns
“I love to play around with music,” she says
“I always have that Mexican side and that pop side
I added a little country to the last album
and then I have that little flamenco signature in my voice
so it’s this unusual combination."
Her love of mariachi comes from her mother
who is credited with increasing the genre's popularity in Spain
Her mom's 1977 mariachi album "Canta a Juan Gabriel" was ahead of its time and basically reshaped her career
She eventually earned the tag "La Española Más Mexicana," or "The Most Mexican Spaniard."
"My mother was the pioneer," Dúrcal says
a lot of artists in Spain wanted to work with mariachis
Spanish people really do appreciate Mexican music
That passion is there in "Amor Eterno," her mom's signature tune
It's about the loneliness and misery the narrator feels after the death of a loved one
It's emotionally raw; Juan Gabriel wrote it after his mother died
The song emerged as a standard and frequently is played graveside at funerals
Get the hankies ready: In concert, Dúrcal sings it along with a recording of her mother.
and they relate to it in their own way: It can be about a marriage partner or a family member
She tries to keep her feelings in check during the song.
"It's a very fine line between crying and getting the most emotion from the song," she says
"Even my mom used to laugh sometimes: 'I have to sing this one again?' But when you're on stage
you try to dive into people's emotions and give them the very best
You know what it means to them at that moment."
It's just one of the many lessons she learned from her mom.
"I’m where I’m at because of her," she says
She taught me everything: How to be a strong woman
how to make music and how to be creative and take chances.

Antonio Morales "Junior," singer, songwriter and Rocío Dúrcal's widower has passed away in Madrid at the age of 70. The "Los Brincos" band member was found dead at his home by the gardner
He walked into his home in Torrelodones where he had to forced open his bedroom door as it was locked
"Junior" was taken to the hospital where doctors confirmed his death by natural causes
was the first to arrive to the scene after he didn't answer any of her repeated phone calls
The medical examiner did not find any signs of physical abuse and said he had been dead between 12 to 14 hours before he was found
He also continued to write music and even produced musical albums for his children Carmen and Antonio
In 2006 he became the widower of Rocío Dúrcal when the Spanish singer and actress passed away
Her inheritance became the center of controversy which put him at odds with his own children
Antonio fell into a deep depression as the family became involved in court battles over who would take what
It was Shaila that meddled to make peace amongst them and calm things down
Tension between the bloodline settled and Carmen's wedding also helped to bring back the lost love
14 June 2010 (PAHO) - The launch of the campaign takes place today in Nicaragua
which since March 2009 has achieved "universal voluntary donation," that is
collecting all of its blood through voluntary
Other countries and territories of Americas that have achieved universal voluntary donation include Canada
altruistic and periodic blood donation is the most effective way to ensure an adequate supply of safe blood for transfusions
PAHO's regional advisor on laboratory and blood services
"Altruistic donors help patients who depend on blood transfusion because they cannot be treated with any other means or technologies," says Cruz
"These donors also know that it is important for them to be healthy so that their blood does not harm the recipient."
Champion of Health Shaila Dúrcal notes that each year
an estimated 24 million units of blood are needed for transfusions in Latin America and the Caribbean
instead of talking about my passion for music
I would like to talk to you about something that concerns us all: a very simple act that can save lives that we sometimes don't do for lack of accurate information
and that is donating blood voluntarily and altruistically," says Dúrcal
whose theme is "New Blood for the World," is aimed at raising awareness of the importance of blood donation among young donors
the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
the International Society for Blood Transfusion
and the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations
Cruz noted that of the 9 million units of blood collected in Latin America and the Caribbean
"only 40 percent come from truly altruistic volunteer donors
The rest of the donations are made in response to a demand from the hospital for a specific patient
This is why 25 percent of the people who attempt to give blood do not meet the requirements for donating blood." He added that many people suffer from low iron levels or a clinical condition or have engaged in behavior that puts them at risk of being infected with pathogens such as the human immunodeficiency virus (which causes AIDS)
or others that can be transmitted through transfusions.
"A large proportion of blood units collected have markers for infection with these agents
which jeopardizes transfusion safety and results in a waste of economic resources
since health providers must discard potentially infectious units," said Cruz.
"Pledge 2 Save Lives," encourages people to donate blood twice a year on scheduled dates
to ensure periodic donation while preventing a drop in donor's iron levels.
"Blood is a resource that cannot be produced in laboratories or factories," says Shaila Dúrcal
the blood we can share with others who need it is the blood that runs through our veins." She urges donors to visit blood donation centers periodically and regularly
"without any motive other than helping someone who needs our blood."
under the banner 'Pledge 2 Save Lives,' will ensure that in Latin America and the Caribbean
this resource will never be lacking for the people who need it," says Durcal

Keeping the new generation connected to mariachi music is what Shaila Durcal aims to do
is the daughter of one of the most beloved singers of mariachi: Her mother was the late Rocio Durcal from Spain
But the Grammy nominee is carving her own legacy conveying those traditional sounds to today's audience and adding her own spin with a mixture of pop
She wants to keep people interested in the old genre as modern styles take the youth culture by storm
"That is precisely what I want to do: those songs of a lifetime but with a new arrangement that makes them more international," Durcal said
you make them more modern and open to the youth."
Durcal brings her mariachi interpretation to Stockton Arena on Saturday
accompanied by an orchestra of traditional mariachi and modern instruments
The opening act will be Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez
because I believe that makes it more grand," Durcal said
"Corazon Ranchero," was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Regional Mexican Album category
The ranchera crooner comes from a family of entertainers - her father
was a pop idol in the Philippines during the 1960s
That has been both an advantage and a disadvantage
without going into detail about the disadvantage
She is mostly thankful and proud of the exposure her parents provided for her
Durcal didn't inherit just a voice; she also strongly resembles her mother
The people have always shared with me how much they love my mother
She was the most important artist Latin America had
and she has been the main (export) of Mexican music all over the world," Durcal said
Durcal made her musical debut on the television show "Noches" when she was 12
The young performer later toured with her mother as a backup singer
who was educated in the United States for several years
which gained little attention from the public
She has performed her mother's song "Amor Eterno" at the Latin Grammys
And she continues to be a link to her mother's legendary sound while placing her own mark on ranchera music
Durcal said she is also deeply connected to the Mexican culture because of her mother
she plans to stir in a mixture of those influences - it's her individual flavor
Even though I sing in the Mexican regional style
rock hits from the '70s and '80s," Durcal said
