The first of the major investments planned by the government to improve the services of the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández airport is beginning to take shape This is the construction of the new aircraft taxiway and which is intended to improve the manoeuvrability of aircraft Its implementation will enable the airport to gain capacity to accommodate more time slots beyond the 40 operations per hour for which it is currently able to carry out The process to contract the construction of this new taxiway was started last June and it is now that the first phases of evaluation of the bids presented by the construction companies interested in taking on its construction are beginning to arrive The call for tenders led to the registration of 19 proposals the first selection has reduced the number of candidates to less than half: eight companies with offers considered valid The tender started with an initial budget of more than 17.4 million with the eight competing submitting prices that range between 14 and the maximum amount of 17.4 million all of them are committed to ensuring the execution period provided for in the conditions of the contract which is 27 months from the start of the works The award should be made before the end of 2024 which would leave the way clear for the works to begin at the end of this year or in the first months of 2025 the new taxiway should be in operation between the last third of 2027 and the beginning of 2028 leaving aside their connection with the railway should coincide with the completion of the extension works of the current El Altet terminal an action conceived with the purpose of allowing the aerodrome to expand its passenger processing capacity to serve a volume of up to 26 million passengers per year The execution of this work would require an outlay of close to 600 million The drafting of the project will be put out to tender before the end of 2024 Despite demands from politicians and the business sector neither Aena nor the airlines considered the construction of a second runway necessary for the airport to meet its future growth needs although this has not been completely ruled out for the future Óscar Puente argues that the fact that this second runway is not being built will not limit El Altet’s possibilities since there are aerodromes that carry 33 million passengers and have a single runway the data for Miguel Hernández is far from that figure everything seems to indicate that it will be surpassed at the end of this year since in the first eight months of the year it has already accumulated 12,293,124 passengers 17.2% more than in the same period in 2023 All this after having experienced the best summer in the historical series with nearly two million passengers in both July and August The truth is that the figures for the latter confirm the airport as one of the most promising among the five that occupy the top positions in number of passengers: Madrid Barajas Palma de Mallorca and Málaga Costa del Sol Alicante was the one that had the greatest growth in August compared to the same month in 2023: 15.3% compared to the increases of 9.2; 8.9; 5 and 9.6 that the rest recorded (in that order) El Altet was the only airport that managed to grow at a double-digit rate Log in to leave a comment © 2021 The Leader Digital At nearly 3,000 ft above sea level in Valencia Masía El Altet is placed at the turning point where the Mediterranean climate starts receiving continental influences The Sierra de Mariola in Eastern Spain is home to over 1,200 species of plants which contribute to the unique flavor of local products like herber liquor and olive oil at Masía El Altet located in a protected natural area has become renowned for its award-winning olive oil due to the complex flavors created by the climate and local olive tree varieties the Sierra de Mariola has been regarded as a kind of natural botanical garden at the heart of the Valencian Community grow on its slopes and aromatic and medicinal herbs are the base of herber (meaning “made of herbs”) — a local liquor which is probably one of the best-known products of the area rosemary and thyme for the flavor of their olive oil feed themselves and absorb all that there’s around them But we have aromatic plants,” Petit said at his estate at Masía El Altet where he and his father met a reporter and videographer on assignment for Olive Oil Times Their ivy-covered 17th-century mansion is placed in the middle of a grove of 14,500 olive trees The tall cypresses around the house and its pale orange façade give it a Tuscan look And I have really seen these olive trees grow as if they were my brothers,” Petit pointed out This 73-hectare plantation is set in a small valley some 10 kilometers from Alcoi one of the main kermes oak forest reserves in the Valencian region “We started planting olive trees back in 1992 sunflowers and wheat were the main crops here We were looking to grow fruit trees but they suffered too much from frost Then we noticed that our hundred-year-old olive trees performed very well here all the oil we produced was for our own consumption,” Petit explained as he strolled with his father through the trees Being in a protected natural area has certain advantages the oil mill had to be built a few kilometers away the renowned French chef Joël Robuchon — who used to spend his holidays in a nearby town — started using it at his restaurants I think [Robuchon] fell in love with our oil because of the complexity it has And that’s thanks to the climate of the place we grow our olive trees,” Petit said The Alicante Mountains have traditionally produced olive oil as almost every region around the Mediterranean But this area is far away from Spain’s main producing areas In fact, Masía El Altet was the only award-winning producer from the Valencian Community at the 2018 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, where it won three Gold Awards This distance to Andalusia may contribute to the particular traits of Petit’s oils Just a few kilometers away from the coast the mountain range — which reaches almost (around 4,593 ft) of altitude — is covered by snow every winter the limit of height where olive trees can grow in the area Masía El Altet is placed at the turning are really important for the final quality of the olive,” he added Petit describes the use of local varieties as Masía El Altet’s “distinguishing trait.” Most of the newly planted olive trees of the estate are of Picual variety the centenary trees that survive in the terraced fields belong to four local cultivars: Alfafarenca “They produce oils that are a little bit sour and spicy NYIOOC showcasing a shift towards quality in the Spanish olive oil sector Producers like Nobleza del Sur and Masía el Altet won awards highlighting the diversity and quality of olive oils from regions across Spain In spite of a slight decrease in the number of entries from 2017 — from 167 to 151- Spain came in second in terms of the total number of awards and reached the third position in entries Eighteen judges from 13 countries evaluated the unprecedented 1,000 entries at the N2018 YOOC. olive oil sector Now we have to be able to show the world how good our work is,” she added Alberto Barrobès, owner and manager of Montsagre agrees that quality has become the main focus for a new generation of olive oil producers in Spain His organic delicate Picual from Horta de Sant Joan was awarded as the Best in Class in that category Eusebio García de la Cruz, owner and co-founder along with his brother of García de la Cruz olive oil company received a Gold Award for his Amphora oil in the category of organic medium blend García de la Cruz suggests that the international perception of Spanish olive oil is in a process of change “This sector is facing very important changes in the next few years I think that Spain will soon overtake Italy as the largest exporter of bottled olive oil in the world We are the largest producer with a huge difference and I believe that the perception of the quality of Spanish oils is also improving There is a long way to go in many aspects though.” With as estimate production of 1.09 million tons of olive oil in 2018 Spain saw a 15 percent decrease from 2017’s campaign according to the International Olive Council these numbers place the Southern European country well ahead of its main competitor in terms of quantity with a total production of around 300,000 tons each remain a long distance behind Spain despite having firmly recovered from 2017 with a 76 percent and 54 percent respective production increase in the current season “We are in a decisive moment for an international level than a national one.” Spain’s contenders at the NYIOOC also reveal the diversity of the Spanish olive oil sector in terms of producing regions and cultivars at the heart of the country’s traditional olive oil sector the award-winning producers draw a rich and diverse map “We are maybe a bit far from the ‘center,’ but I don’t think that makes us so different There is also an oil tradition here and the volume of production has increased in recent years I believe we have the same good conditions Jaén has to produce good quality but we death Princess Diana made a short visit to Alicante as she attempted to evade harassment from the British press She stayed for just the one night at the Sidi San Juan hotel having left London in a hurry who remained at the terminal to pick up the suitcases as she tried to mislead journalists and photographers 1996 when the ex-wife of The Prince of Wales arrived at El Altet airport at (.30 in the evening Dressed in a dark jacket and covering her face with a cap as she tried to hide her face Diana refused to use the VIP facility at Alicante-Elche airport as she was keen to get to her hotel as quickly as possible The princess was accompanied by an executive from El Altet who took her to a taxi thus misleading the airport security personnel and even the National Police escort which was waiting for her The taxi driver who drove Diana did not disclose the destination alluding to professional ethics and confidentiality colleagues who saw the driver on the Esplanade de Alicante ended up revealing her destination There was only one hotel in that area with 5 stars It was quickly besieged by British journalists who were looking to get a photograph of the princess which at that time was the target of all the paparazzi and of whom a stolen snapshot could be worth millions At first it was thought that Lady Di was visiting the Costa Blanca for a short holiday since it was not the first time she had travelled to Spain to rest she spent a few days in a private villa in the province of Malaga for the same reason clarified that her trip to Alicante was to visit “a friend.” Close sources also suggested that it was someone who was ill although the name of the person has never emerged The truth is that the short stay by the Princess was cut short by the media who practically “took” the Sidi San Juan hotel apart Journalists and photographers from many different media outlets as well as the Associated Press agencies in Madrid and Multi Studios Many of them even booked a room in the hotel posing as businessmen athletes and company executives in an attempt to get a glimpse of Diana The room at the hotel in Playa de San Juan was booked until Monday but the harassment that she got from the press made her decide to return to UK earlier than was planned Indeed she only stayed for one night and on Saturday the 4th the ex-wife of Prince Charles caught a plane to back to Heathrow wearing the same clothing in which she arrived: jeans taking both dinner and breakfast with her secretary in an adjoining room although sources at the time claimed to see the princess taking a short walk along the Playa de San Juan in the morning much more so than in her photographs,” commented a tourist from Madrid speaking to the Spanish press The fleeting visit of Princess Diana caught even the managers of the 5-star hotel by surprise as the reservation of the room had been made by phone and using an assumed name And neither did the occupant of Room 6619 book any of the spa or beauty treatments that the complex offered at that time although she did ask the reception manager to keep details of her visit private By land: national mainroad 332 Alicante-Cartagena Passenger transport
