El Campello has launched a new signage campaign aimed at reducing the incidences of drowning
particularly among the elderly and children
The key messages convey that there is ‘no safe bathing without company’ and ‘there is no safe bathing without supervision’
most drowning cases involve elderly swimmers and inexperienced minors
They further warned that the critical window is just 40 seconds
emphasising that carelessness can lead to tragic consequences
drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children
and the group most at risk is children under 4 years of age
The new signs are being displayed on the two large sandy areas of El Campello (next to the accessible areas of Carrer la Mar and Muchavista)
They will remain in place until September 15 to ensure maximum impact during the busy summer season

The local government of Calpe has expressed significant frustration regarding the prolonged delay in receiving authorisation from the General Directorate of Coasts
and Airports for the installation of the Mare de Deu del Carmen sculpture in the port area

The sculptural ensemble represents the Virgen del Carmen
holding a child in her arms and a scapular in one hand
standing on a base adorned with an offering of flowers
The sculpture is flanked by three costaleros or porters
symbolising three generations: a grandfather
Despite the approaching conclusion of the year
with only three months remaining until the celebratory festivities wrap up
there has been no formal response from the General Directorate regarding the authorisation necessary for placing the sculpture in the designated port area
The request for permission was initially submitted in 2022 to the General Directorate of Ports
which falls under the Ministry of Public Works
It was aimed at allowing the installation of the sculpture in an area currently occupied by a group of containers
The Confederacion Hidrografica del Jucar (CHJ) has made a significant decision that grants the municipality of El Campello the rights to receive up to five cubic hectometres of drinking water annually
This agreement ensures a reliable water supply “forever,” marking a pivotal moment for both the Town Council and Aguas de Alicante
The officials involved have heralded this announcement as “historic,” given that it not only secures drinking water for the local population but also paves the way for sustainable future development within the area
This allocation comfortably surpasses the municipality’s current water consumption levels
a first in the town’s 123-year history
This development marks an end to the sporadic water supply issues that El Campello faced
which were especially prominent in the Muchavista area
El Campello has faced various historical challenges related to water supply
primarily linked to insufficient storage capacity
Compounding these issues were frequent breakdowns along the fragile network of canals serving the Huerta de Alicante
as well as intermittent water quality concerns that led to advisories against consumption due to turbidity
Mayor Berenguer expressed his optimism regarding this agreement
emphasising its significance for ensuring consistent water supply and supporting the future development of the municipality
He attributed its success to persistent advocacy within the political landscape
and he believes this resolution fully justifies his commitment to public service and local governance

Spain - February 2022 - About 300 young people gathered on Saturday
at the Salesian Work of El Campello to celebrate "Campobosco 2022," a meeting of the Education to Faith itinerary that brings together participants in the second year of the baccalaureate from Salesian houses in the Valencian Community
Held in presence and centered on the Rector Major's Strenna 2021 "Moved by Hope," the meeting was rich in testimonies
based on the stages of formation: the first three levels worked on the life of Don Bosco by analyzing the characters in his life
the places where he carried out his mission and the objects he used during his life; the fourth level
had an approach of greater depth in the faith and style of Don Bosco
were presented to the young people in the style of TED talks
(ANS – El Campello) – On Thursday
25 people from the Salesian communities of Alcoy
El Campello and Valencia met at the Salesian house in El Campello to participate in a new formation meeting organised by the Delegation for Social Communication of Spain’s Mary Help of Christians Province (SMX)
which gathered the witness of the formation given in the houses of the Aragonese Autonomous Community – in Spain’s St James the Greater Province (SSM)
in April and September – was confirmation of the good health of a project that for several years has been trying to offer a unified shape to the "Salesian vision of the world"
The "Web Local" project came about in September 2017, launched by the SMX Province together with the SSM Province and with the support of the National Youth Ministry Centre
content and design of websites of Salesian presences
The first houses to launch the new platforms were Alicante
Ciutadella and the San Antonio Abad Work in Valencia
following the collaboration of several houses and bodies that participated in the pilot project led by the centre in Huesca
led by the Provincial Delegation for Communication and the Provincial Coordination for Information Technology together with the Dosatic IT company, came about with the aim of unifying the Salesian sites on the Internet in the SMX Province
with the economic and technical advantages that collaboration entails
consistent with the Salesian Corporate Identity Manual and
use the same software for content management
"For the Provincial Delegation for Communication
this project is the confirmation of the potential that our houses and entities have when they have a common vision and think big
we can confirm that in order to grow in communion
to provide information about the life and action of the entire province and its works
it was necessary to have a common ecosystem that facilitated networking
strengthened our institutional image and facilitated the coordination of our structures
we continue to ensure that the Salesian digital environment is always at the forefront" explained the Provincial Delegate for Social Communication for SMX
youth centres and foundations are involved in the project – so not only Salesian houses and schools are part of it
but also groups such as the Ángel Tomás Foundation - Salesianos Social
the Federation of Youth Centres in Valencia
the Bosco Global NGO for Development or the recently established Federación Maín
The SSM Province is also immersed in this process of change
although at a different level in its development
with 35% of web pages involved and many others in formation
in addition to numerous sites and projects with which the Communication team of the National Youth Ministry Centre has taken new steps towards this management system
"The main challenge for us Salesians is to consolidate the digitisation of recent years
realising our concept of the ‘digital courtyard’
This is why it is necessary to involve young people in the communication projects that are developed
without forgetting the orientation of communication as a tool at the service of evangelisation"
concludes the SMX Social Communication Delegate
while thanking the staff of the IT office and Dosatic for the efforts made in the technical support service
The "Web Local" project is continually advancing
improving and training new users of these Internet platforms
A new formation session will begin soon for several houses in the SMX Province and is also available for any other groups that may need it

ARCHIVED - 80-year-old man dies at El Campello beach
in latest heatwave tragedy" style="margin: 5px 10px 5px 0px; float: left" width="100%" />
An 80-year-old man collapsed and died on the shore of Muchavista beach in El Campello on Monday July 25, one of the hottest days on record in Alicante province
More than 500 people have died this month due to extreme heat as the mercury continues to reach dangerously high levels
The latest tragedy in Alicante happened just after 12.30pm at the popular stretch of coastline in El Campello after the 80-year-old was initially pulled semi-conscious from the sea
The elderly man then collapsed when he was on the shore, prompting the Town Hall to "rule out drowning" in a statement
The main hypotheses is that the pensioner suffered severe heat stroke
as it was 37℃ in El Campello at the time of the incident
lifeguards performed basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation manoeuvres on the elderly bather until a SAMU ambulance and medical crew arrived
Also read: Life-saving drone speeds up critical response times at Alicante beaches, Spain
SAMU medics continued with advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other stabilisation techniques
a native of Logroño who had a flat in the area, was pronounced dead
A post mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of the death
but the local authority has pointed to "a health problem" and heat stroke rather than drowning
Earlier this month, a 43-year-old man from the Faroe Islands suffered a heart attack and died whilst swimming in the sea at Elche's Arenales del Sol beach, and a Spanish man, 73, drowned at Poniente beach in Benidorm. They were the latest in a series of six drowning and near-drowning incidents in Alicante province in just 24 hours
Each year safety awareness campaigns are launched across Spain to prevent drownings
In fact, drowning was the third leading cause of death due to external or accidental causes in 2020

rocky peninsula on the coast of the municipality of Campello
approximately 9 kilometres north of the city of Alicante
which is home to one of the best-known and most thoroughly excavated archaeological sites in the Costa Blanca
At one point in the past the peninsula was separated from the mainland and became an islet when an earthquake destroyed the sleeve of land joining it to the coast
but in 1943 it was re-connected to the coastline by engineers who
used dynamite to alter the lay of the land and in the process destroyed a large part of the pre-historic burial ground at the site
What remains nowadays is a flat promontory with a maximum altitude of just 8 metres above sea level
Around 40 per cent of this area is occupied by the archaeological site
where the remains identified date back as far as the Bronze Age and include a remarkable sequence of historic artefacts through the historical periods up until the end of Roman rule
There are also remains of Islamic constructions built during the occupation of most of the Iberian Peninsula by the Moors during the Early Middle Ages
and the wealth of archaeological evidence tells us that for many centuries the Illeta dels Banyets was an important trading port
controlling not only maritime traffic but also trading routes leading to inland areas of what is now Spain
The first evidence of human occupation actually dates back to the end of the Neolithic
when the inhabitants lived in oval-shaped dwellings
the remnants of some of which can still be seen
But more substantial findings have been unearthed relating to the Bronze Age
including two large underground tanks dug into the rocks
around which burial sites and housing structures were built
The grave goods found inside the tombs include metal punches and knives
knobs and buttons and some ceramic drinking vessels
The following level corresponds to the age of the Iberians in the 4th and 3rd centuries BC
At this time it seems that an important township developed
although only a fraction of it has been excavated: on either side of a street which runs along the length of the promontory it is possible to make out two temples as well as storage buildings and dwellings
some of them displaying highly complex architecture which has led to the conclusion that they constituted an important trading location
ovens have been found which were used to produce Iberian amphorae
The highest level of remains dates back to the time of the Romans in the 1st and the 2nd centuries AD
The Romans built on top of the foundations of the abandoned Iberian settlement and a thermal baths complex was created as an annex
and although not many remains have been preserved it is possible to identify both the residence area of the owner (the pars urbana) and another area related with agricultural activities (pars rustica)
The simple thermal bath facility is located in a narrow building where the heating oven
the cold room (frigidarium) and the dressing room (apodyterium) stand in a line
Other Roman findings include a series of fish farming pools or hatcheries
which were cut into the rocks and connected to the sea through a number of trap holes
These reflect the fact that one of the most important activities in this part of the Roman Empire was the exploitation of marine resources
including the breeding and raising of fish for various products prized throughout the Empire: several other facilities like the one at Illeta dels Banyets have been discovered in the province of Alicante
the most important being the one in Portus Ilicitanus (Santa Pola)
The four pools which can be seen on Illeta dels Banyets have been badly eroded by the sea
but it can be seen that they were connected to each other
The largest measures 8.7 by 3.10 metres and seawater enters via channels located on either side
while the other three are at right angles to the largest
They are connected by vertical “windows”
which could be opened and closed to act as gates

A real estate agency that operated a massive pyramid-style scam from an office in El Campello
swindling 5.5 million euros out of clients across Spain
including a father and son who allegedly managed the agency
employees who carried out the work of luring clients
promoting the scam and organising construction
handed over hundreds of thousands for luxury pads they never actually owned
the Guardia Civil in El Campello launched operation 'Serpis' to investigate an alleged scam by a real estate group based in the area
selling luxury homes in Busot and surrounding areas
the group specialised in two types of scams
One involved offering the sale of the same already constructed
The other consisted of formalising a contract for a new-build with an unsuspecting client
The 'agency' allegedly falsified original documents issued by the Land Registry and then used the forged papers to carry out the purchase and sale contracts
They advertised luxury homes on the internet
and mainly targeted French-speaking citizens

A fifth of the stolen 5.5 million euros has been recovered and returned to its rightful owners
and an investigation is still ongoing into the case of 18 illegal construction workers who were never paid for building work that was actually carried out
"This has been an arduous investigation involving several months of intense work of gathering and studying information that has led to arrests and further enquiries," said El Campello's Guardia Civil
