Spain currently has a speed limit of 120km/h on motorways
but the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) is now testing a new limit of 150km/h on a certain section of the highway in Catalonia
which will be controlled by artificial intelligence
Drivers traveling on the AP-7 near El Vendrell will now be able to travel up to 150 km/h; and will not be fined if they exceed 120 km/h
making it the first of its kind in the country
Speed limits there will now be controlled by AI
meaning that the maximum speed limit could change according to factors like weather conditions
this also means that at certain times drivers will also be able to go faster than the usual limit
As speed limits will be adjusted in real time
the system is designed to improve road safety in situations such as adverse weather conditions or near high-risk areas such as roads with dangerous curves
but will also help prevent traffic jams during rush hour
they want to follow the example of other EU countries such as Germany and France
this system has helped minimise accidents during rush hour
when vehicle density is highest and in France
variable speed limits have been implemented in areas prone to sudden weather changes
preventing accidents caused by adverse conditions
LISTED: The items you can’t carry in your car in Spain
The EU has assured its members that this new system of limits controlled by AI will reduce the number of accidents
studies have shown that intelligent speed control can reduce traffic accidents by up to 30 percent in high-accident areas
But this system also poses several challenges too
The main concern is that drivers may be confused about how fast or slow they should be driving
It is also essential that the AI technology is accurate and is in constant working order
'Crucial for safety': New rule will enforce driving licence bans across EU
There are also debates surrounding privacy and data use
as these systems require constant monitoring of traffic and driver behaviour
Some organisations have shown concern about how this data is managed and whether it could be used for other purposes
such as automatically imposing speeding fines
Currently the trial will only take place in this one section in Catalonia
but if successful it could be rolled out across the country

Damien Fleming played his part in Ireland’s World Cup Pitch and Putt victory in El Vendrell in Barcelona as Ireland retained the title and won the competition for a sixth time in total and a fourth in straight succession
Killarney member travelled as the Irish team’s reserve and he featured in the final when Louth’s Padraic Sarsfield had to withdraw injured prior to the decider
Up to that stage Ireland had dominated the tournament
becoming top seeds for the start of the knockout stages on Friday before defeating Switzerland in the quarter- finals
On Saturday they had a semi-final victory over Galicia meaning they would play competition newcomers North Portugal in the final after they surprised hosts Catalonia in the other semi- final
Sunday’s final started with a doubles and singles encounter as Damien partnered with Limerick’s Kieran Earls to win their match with Kildare’s Ian Dillon winning the singles encounter to give Ireland a 2-0 lead
After Ireland hot the winning point in the final the lead both Damien Fleming and Ian Dillon had in both their singles matches were deemed wins and not halves so it goes down as a 5-0 win not 4-1
Damien became the second Kerry player to win for Ireland in a championship event after his club-mate Derry McCarthy captained the 2005 Irish side to victory in the European Championships that year
Damien officially became the first Kerry player to play for both province and country with his appearance in the decider but an announcement prior to last weekend means he will b quickly joined by another two players in the county in achieving that feat
Both Brian McCarthy (Deerpark) and Ajay Barrett (Listowel) will be part of the Munster under 16 side in Pitch and Putt Ireland’s second Inter Provincial Challenge next month after playing for Ireland in a Cchallenge with Catalonia last year
In total four of the six under 16’s in the Munster side will be from Kerry as Deerpark’s Ben Kelliher and Tralee’s Sophie Moynihan will be part of the team
Deerpark and Kerry under 16 officer Gearóid Cronin has been selected as manager of the Munster side for the challenge which will take place in Larkspur Park in Cashel on Saturday

A town in north-eastern Spain - a country well known for its zero-tolerance approach to dog fouling - has taken a drastic step in the war on negligent pet owners: the dog toilet
has set up a canine toilet along one of its main thoroughfares
It mimics a human toilet in many ways; its stainless steel platform features a hole with a lid
releasing jets of water that carry the excrement through underground pipes to the sewer system
Next to it sits a doggie urinal - a grid with small holes over which dogs can squat
Between both sits a water fountain for dogs
The toilet was donated to the town as part of a pilot project
Depending on how the toilet is received by the public
he'll begin marketing it to municipalities around the world
Girona has spent much of the past decade photographing and documenting dogs with the goal of creating a contraption that could extend the luxury of a toilet to dogs

'Future will be much better than past, no doubts,' says Melchior in Barcelona, as kids flocked to streets across country despite Covid
ACN | Barcelona
The undoubtedly most magical night of the year for Catalan children is here and the first big moment
the parades to celebrate the arrival of the Three Kings full of presents could be held despite Covid-19
Their Majesties did not miss their annual visit but offered a very unique image: they were all wearing face masks
and Balthasar did not forget their customary ornate crowns and regal robes but were more cautious than other years given the current pandemic situation
this did not deter thousands and thousands of kids across Catalonia from welcoming them in the countless parades they led
All those attending over the age of 6 were obliged to wear face masks
while they were recommended for children aged 3 to 5
The health authorities had also urged parade participants and attendees to keep as much distance from other people as possible and to avoid chanting or shouting
The events honoring the three men that brought gold
myrrh to Jesus 2022 years ago to celebrate his birth were limited compared to pre-pandemic times for health and safety reasons
The tradition of the three kings throwing sweets to children did not go ahead in some places
with authorities wanting to avoid children crowding together and lowering their face masks
The Barcelona parade featured some 800 participants – 500 fewer than a normal year – but for the first time had explanations in sign language
Members of the public were not able to attend the arrival of the three kings in Barcelona by sea
Upon arrival in the Catalan capital's port
Melchior addressed the children in the city: "The future will be much better than the past
thanked the kids for following the Covid guidelines and "for their big capacity of solidarity
thinking of those who are suffering the most."
Not all municipalities have opted to bring back parades this year. In Santa Coloma de Farners, the three wise men greeted children from one fixed position, similar to last year.
Children needed to book an appointment to visit the three kings in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, where the council has again opted for a static event rather than a procession.
Local councils have also in some cases opted to amend the usual route taken by the procession in order to avoid overcrowding, including in Amposta and Manresa.
In El Vendrell, children who are self-isolating have already been able to get their wish lists to the three kings via WhatsApp video calls instead of hand-delivering their letters.
But whether standing still or on the move, the important thing is that the kings arrived safely in Catalonia after their long journey from the east, magically bringing gifts for children to open on January 6 when they wake up.

comes the next frontier in the Spanish war on negligent pet owners: the dog toilet
El Vendrell, a small town of 36,000 people in northeastern Spain
The contraption mimics a human toilet in many ways; its stainless steel platform features a hole with a lid
Next to it sits a doggie urinal – a grid with small holes over which dogs can squat
A dog-lover whose father bred Irish Setters
"Over the years I've seen that if you train and raise dogs well
these animals can be just like humans."
Originally Girona came up with a few different models
modifying each as he learned more about the behaviour of dogs
because the animal needs a certain odour to be lured to the toilet," said the engineer
Given that the toilet is designed to sit in a park
consideration was also given to the design
"You can't have something that clashes with the setting," he said
"The design was done with the concept of being attractive."
The result is what he called a first in the world
"We looked around to see what was on the market
and saw that nothing quite like this existed."
The town of El Vendrell – where negligent pet owners face fines of up to €750– was the first to say yes to his marketing pitch
earning them an exclusive dog toilet built entirely by hand
"To make just one is costly and complicated," Girona said
the costs would definitely decrease dramatically."
Recent years have seen towns and cities across Spain crack down on owners who don't clean up after their pets. In Barcelona and Madrid fines can run as high as €1,500, while the town of Colmenar Viejo hired a private detective in April to catch negligent owners in the act

Which roads are now free, how much money will drivers save, and who will pay for the highways
Alan Ruiz Terol | Barcelona
When the tolls of four major highways in Catalonia are lifted on Tuesday at midnight
a historic shift will take place: the number of kilometers of toll-free roads will surpass those of toll motorways for the first time in decades
With Spain having the most extensive high-capacity road network in Europe
Catalonia has long been the territory with the highest number of toll highways
locals saw it as yet another economic grievance
with grassroots groups organizing repeated protests to pressure Catalan and Spanish authorities into terminating toll concessions to make driving more affordable
And their biggest victory will come with the end of tolls on the AP-2 and AP-7 motorways—connecting Barcelona with the capitals of Girona
as well as Spain’s Aragon region and France—and also the C-33 and C-32 highways
Grassroots groups have called for a night of festivities at empty toll booths to celebrate their success, but also to warn authorities against possibly reimposing new tolls in the future
Starting in Zaragoza (in Spain’s Aragon region)
From Tarragona to La Jonquera (border with France)
As estimated with current mobility figures
AP-7 and AP-2 users will save a combined total of 515 million euros a year
according to Spain’s Ministry of Transports
But the number could rise to 752 million euros if the number of drivers using the highways increases as expected
All highways that will continue to operate as toll roads from Wednesday are owned by the Catalan government
and their concessions will terminate between 2036 and 2039
These toll roads are the Cadí tunnel in Lleida (€12)
the C-32 from Castelldefels to El Vendrell (€11)
including the Vallvidrera tunnels crossing through Barcelona’s Collserola mountain range (€14.95)
The so-called shadow tolls (or "peatges a l’ombra"
in Catalan) are privately operated roads shifting the economic burden from drivers to all taxpayers
with the company letting vehicles circulate for free
but then charging the Catalan government for every user
Shadow tolls account for 345 kilometers of highways
far surpassing the 120 kilometers of toll roads that will still be in operation from Wednesday
It is estimated that shadow tolls cost Catalans 180 million euros a year
with contracts with the private firms Cedinsa and Iridium terminating in 2038 and 2041
340 people will be laid off following an agreement between unions and Abertis
the company operating the highways up until now
employees working in central offices and customer service
The AP-2 and the AP-7 motorways are owned by the Spanish government
and the C-32 and C-33 highways by the Catalan government
taxpayers will cover the maintenance of these roads
Some believe removing tolls could have a "pull" effect for the first few days
"This would mean having more cars on the highway
and an increase in insecurity," says EAE Business School's Víctor Ruiz
an accounting and finance professor at Pompeu Fabra University
thinks this will make roads safer in the long run
Because accidents tend to occur more often on busier toll-free roads
removing them elsewhere could even out traffic between the C-32 and N-II
The PIMEC small and medium business association also believes this will lead to an increase in vehicles on these highways
and has expressed concern regarding their maintenance
especially as they are vital for the transport of goods
Lifting tolls could have an impact on emissions
making highways toll-free could also possibly decrease pollution levels
The measure has been flatly rejected by grassroots groups.
Throughout the decades, grassroots groups in municipalities with toll roads and drivers in general have demanded the end of toll roads, taking part in hundreds of mobilizations. Nearly ten years ago, the ‘No vull pagar’ (I don’t want to pay) movement became the most popular protest action ever taken against toll roads.
On March 29, 2012, Josep Casadella, from the town of Anglès, in Selva county, recorded himself in a video telling toll workers that he didn’t want to pay the fee. He said that Catalonia was being discriminated against, since other Spanish regions didn’t have that many toll roads. Employees eventually let him go, lifting the barrier but keeping the red light.
The video went viral at a time when the Catalan independence movement was gaining momentum, fueled by an increasing distrust in Spanish institutions. More and more people recorded themselves imitating Casadella and a platform was created under the motto ‘No vull pagar’.
The tipping point came on May 1, 2012, when thousands of drivers flooded the AP-7 highway, forcing workers to lift barriers and keep them up to avoid long lines of traffic.

Barcelona (CNA).- Tourist towns in Catalonia have urged the Catalan and Spanish governments to work together to deal with illegal street trading
After the death this summer in Salou of Senegalese citizen Mor Sylla during a police operation against ‘top manta’
alarms have been raised again about the economic
social and also security implications of this complex phenomenon that local politicians feel powerless to fight against
Many of the vendors are from Western Africa and in most cases have no legal documentation
so are living in an extremely precarious situation and usually escape the police when they are intercepted
some of the towns most adversely affected by this issue
have warned in comments to the CNA that this “is not a local problem” but a national
led by former left-wing activist Ada Colau
has warned that the humanitarian catastrophe in the Mediterranean will increase migration
which in turn will boost ‘top manta’ unless “integral solutions are found”
The Catalan capital has also warned that it is the Spanish government that has “the competence and therefore the responsibility to manage migration fluxes”
adding that without “decisive” action by all public administrations and “social actors”
Barcelona’s proposal to solve the issue of illegal street trading is to implement “socially transversal policies” to help prevent the phenomenon
in other words: going to the root of the issue
fighting the situation of social exclusion and therefore preventing people from being involved in illegal activities
The mayor of the northern coastal town of Roses
also feels that the issue needs a “global solution” and more decisive action by the Spanish state
“goes well beyond the borders of Catalonia or Spain”
if these huge avalanches of people continue to arrive in Greece
the short-term solution is to toughen the laws that regulate the phenomenon
Mindan thinks that illegal street vending should be punished “more severely” than an administrative offence
we can only fine the vendors and confiscate the material”
agrees with the diagnosis and is now opting for “minimising the impact” of the phenomenon
Forns has asked all local towns affected to “come together” after the summer to ask for “new measures on immigration to help those that live in risk of social exclusion” and end up working for illegal counterfeit mafias
‘Top manta’ has not only social and security implications
as it is not regulated and many of the products that are being sold are counterfeits
The politician thinks that besides asking for the involvement of the Spanish and Catalan governments
local councils also have to urge citizens to avoid shopping from ‘top manta’ vendors
adding that sales have dropped “by 90%” in the area
powerless without a clear regulation on the issue and facing the security and social problems attached to the phenomenon
have had to find “imaginative” short-term solutions
the street cleaning schedule is organised in a way that tries to dissuade vendors
Local and Catalan police are also deployed at the entry points to the town
in order to catch those vendors that travel by train or bus with illegal material
This solution has also worked in El Vendrell
where Head Police Officer Jordi Altarriba says police pressure has helped to notably reduce the problem

Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has launched an innovative speed management system on the AP-7 motorway
between Maçanet de la Selva and El Vendrell
previously capped at the national standard of 120 km/h (75 mph)
now allows for variable speed limits that can reach up to 150 km/h (93 mph) under optimal conditions
The newly implemented system uses artificial intelligence to assess traffic density
and time of day to determine the most appropriate speed limits in real time
This marks the first use of such dynamic technology in Spain
as part of a wider plan to implement “smart traffic” infrastructure nationwide
The goal is to improve safety while also enhancing traffic flow efficiency through automated regulation
Similar systems already operate in countries such as the UK
where variable speed limits are common on motorways
Spain hopes this pilot programme can become a benchmark for broader application

the dynamic speed controlled by AI in a section of the AP-7 to reduce the accident rate
Catalonia is taking another step forward in the prediction of road safety with the premiere of a highway that will become the nightmare of novice drivers: the first road with dynamic speed or
with a speed limit that changes according to traffic conditions thanks to AI
which may mark a before and after in road safety
and seeks to improve safety and optimize vehicle flow
We tell you everything you need to know about this road to start getting to know what the highways of the future could be like
As announced by the Councilor for Territory
the section chosen for this system is a 150-kilometer segment of the AP-7 highway
between Maçanet de la Selva (Girona) and El Vendrell (Tarragona)
The stretch will have variable speed panels managed by AI to adapt to traffic and to adjust speed limits in real time according to various factors
weather conditions or the state of the road
40 km/h in traffic jams) based on vehicle flow and weather
will use predictive AI to anticipate risk zones and adjust speeds (up to 60 km/h in congestion)
combined with radars and cameras to detect infractions
while the first system is more focused on reducing traffic jams
reducing the accident rate and also the saturation of the road
the method has already been successfully applied in other countries such as Germany and France
where it has significantly reduced the accident rate in high traffic areas
For example, to what is considered the most dangerous road in Catalonia
So now you know, if you are planning your next getaway
keep this in mind and check where your route passes
And while you’re at it, if you want you can take advantage to do some of these routes to the reservoirs and swamps that are now filled

Just shy of an hour’s drive down the coast from bustling Barcelona sits the Costa Daurada’s only ‘Grand Luxe 5*’ resort: the very fancy Le Méridien RA hotel and spa
suites and apartments on the beachfront of ‘Platja de Sant Salvador’ in El Vendrell
and contemporary art that guarantees a decadent stay for discerning travellers
Set in a building originally constructed in 1929
originally designed to be a children’s hospital
the Le Méridien Ra opened its doors in 2004 following a careful restoration that transformed the property into a luxury resort with four food and beverage offerings
a spa with thalassotherapy circuit and solarium with sea views
and spacious guest rooms with views of the glittering Mediterranean Sea
Today a more contemporary building houses the majority of the guest rooms
whilst the original construction is home to the Gran Deluxe rooms and suites and food and beverage offerings
to the impeccably kept grounds currently dotted with a collection of Salvador Dalí sculptures; the contemporary beach club to its commanding position on the beautiful Costa Daurada; crafted cocktails at the swanky Longitude Bar to long dinners at restaurant D.O.
where executive chef pays homage to the produce and traditions of the neighbouring regions … Le Méridien Ra is a hotel one need not leave should your summer-slouch desires choose

as the hotel pleasantly put it — welcomes families and curious travellers interested in Catalan culture
The hotel’s impressive 300 metres of façade is best viewed from sea
which is straddles that nice fine line between warm and refreshing for the majority of the summer
An architectural treat that sets an elegant tone
whilst nodding to the history of its building
the ‘modern’ façade greeting guests arriving by road is at the opposite side of the beach
and offers a nice juxtaposition from the original 1929 building
Managing to acutely capture the perfect combination of classic and modern makes Le Méridien RA a hotel of unique and exceptional twists and turns; its spaces
including an old chapel that for many years was the Church of San Juan de Diós
and every luxury catered to … Costa Daurada’s only ‘Grand Luxe 5*’ resort is simply a slice of paradise
