As the threat of torrential storms looms large in the Region of Murcia
with a red alert for possible downpours in place on 12th and 13th September and authorities cancellaing school and warning people to take precautions
it is worth checking how prone to flooding your particular area is on a fascinating "floodability" map compiled by the CHS water authority
The map clearly shows how in the east of the Region water runs off the flat land of the Campo de Cartagena towards the Mar Menor
as well as how the Guadalentín valley between Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras and the flood plain of the Segura are liable to being affected by floodwater
The map also goes into incredible detail as you enlarge the image
showing clearly how the streets of Puerto de Mazarrón are not served by adequate drainage in the Bahía area
while in nearby Bolnuevo the risk presented by the rambla
which overflowed disastrously almost excactly 30 years ago
Interestingly, the map of Cartagena reflects the area of land in the north of the city which is low-lying
having been reclaimed from the sea as the city expanded: the original peninsula on which the ancient cities of Qart Hadasht and Carthago Nova stood is relatively risk-free

the regional Covid Monitoring Committee met on Monday to analyse the latest coronavirus data published by the Ministry of Health
and to agree the municipalities in which bars and restaurants can open for the coming week
Hostelry businesses in an additional 17 municipalities will be permitted to open their external terraces to 75% capacity in the following areas: Murcia City (this includes Corvera
Gea y Truyols and other outlying districts of the municipality
Villanueva del Río Segura and Bullas
the accumulated incidence rate is between 250 and 500 cases per 100,000 of the population throughout the last 14 days
Ulea and Ojós will be permitted to open their terraces to 100% of their occupation capacity as their accumulated incidence rates over 14 days are under 250
No service inside the restaurant or at the bar is permitted
Municipalities in which establishments must remain closed due to the higher levels of incidence are: Alcantarilla
Remember; the restrictions for travelling between municipalities remain in place until the 9th December
so it's important to remain in the same municipality in which you actually live
ARCHIVED - Bars and restaurants in 17 additional municipalities can open from Wednesday" style="margin: 5px 10px 5px 0px; float: left" width="100%" />
One expert gave a simple example; a man who is asymptomatic and doesn´t know he is contagious goes to the washroom
removes his mask to blow his nose and doesn´t wash his hands before leaving
touches the door handle of the washroom and door on his way out
he touches the back of his chair to sit down
shares his phone around the table to look at a picture……his friends are now eating bread from the same basket
so thinks he has done everything necessary to avoid catching the virus
but touches the door handle on his way out and repeats the above pattern…….It only takes a second of inattention and no matter how stringently the bar is sanitising tables
it is very easy to not clean the back of the door
or touch something before it has been cleaned
so extreme care should be exercised the experts say
ARCHIVED - Development as large as Camposol gets the green light to expand in Fuente Alamo" style="margin: 5px 10px 5px 0px; float: left" width="100%" />The Hacienda del Álamo development has followed a similar path to that travelled by Camposol in that the constructor went into insolvency after the financial crisis in the early 2010’s
leaving the planned development unfinished with many new properties unsold and large areas of land left undeveloped
The main difference is that in Camposol’s case the insolvent constructor company’s assets were assigned to a bankruptcy administrator and auctioned to pay creditors
whereas with Hacienda the assets and debts were taken over by Banco Sareb
a semi-public entity set up by the Spanish Central Bank after the financial crisis to absorb the toxic debt and overvalued assets which were affecting the viability of smaller banks
Sareb became better known as the “Banco Malo” (Bad Bank)
ARCHIVED - Development as large as Camposol gets the green light to expand in Fuente Alamo" style="margin: 5px 10px 5px 0px; float: left" width="100%" />Sareb still own the Camposol Golf Course (not the Clubhouse) and took control of the Hacienda del Álamo complex in 2013
in conjunction with conglomerate company Profusa they have signed an agreement with Fuente Álamo Town Hall to enlarge the development
although this may take some time as Sareb still have many unsold properties on their hands
The agreement involves expanding the development by around one million square metres
adding a possible 3,000 properties to add to the existing 1,400-plus
In return Sareb and Profusa will cede some three million square meters of land for their inclusion in the El Valle and Carrascoy Regional Park and write off a total 1.3 million euro debt owed by the Council to both companies in lieu of two agreed urban plans of 2005 that were never developed
ARCHIVED - Development as large as Camposol gets the green light to expand in Fuente Alamo" style="margin: 5px 10px 5px 0px; float: left" width="100%" />Should the project go ahead the development will rival Camposol in size
Another similarity with Camposol is that both developments have 4-star hotels which are currently closed.

The mountains of Sierra Espuña are a pine clad haven of cool in the summer and a glorious place to enjoy a walk at any time of year
with a very wide range of options available to those looking for an enjoyable day out in the Region of Murcia
The park´s 25,000 hectares are a maze of walks and routes
with recreation areas and restaurants provided for the visitors who flock to the park every weekend
and many enjoyable options for those who enjoy walking
family picnics and barbecues or just a tranquil zone of shade in the hot summer.
The visitors' centre features a permanent exhibition about the flora and fauna of the park, maps of some of the walking routes (many of which start just outside) and public toilets
and is accessible for families with pushchairs and those with wheelchairs
Walks and Routes within Sierra Espuña
These are structures dating back to the 16th century
when they were used to compact snow and store ice which which was then transported to the major cities of Murcia
The walk is a short one from the nearest car parking area
and can be extended to be more testing for those who want to explore more of the mountain landscape.
This is a viewing point which gives a view from above Alhama de Murcia
and plenty of walks and tracks run from this point.
Route of the Dinosaurs: A 1.5-kilometre walk which encompasses a rope bridge and the place where children like to think they can see a dinosaur's footprint in the rocks
It's a comfortable loop through the pine forests back to the parking area where there are barbecue and picnic facilities
It is also possible to extended the route to 8 kilometres: ask at the Richard Cordoniu centre for a map
There are many companies offering activity products, but most are Spanish and speak limited English, one notable exception being the British-run Mariposa hotel and restaurant
The hotel staff offer a wide range of adventure activities and works closely with reliable and recommended guides
Flora and fauna in Sierra Espuña
The vast forests of Sierra Espuña are home to a wide range of wildlife
and the variety of conditions ensures an interesting visit for those with an interest in nature
the Ricardo Codorníu visitors centre has plenty of information available about the wildlife in the area
and a good display showing some of the species and specimens to be found in the Sierra Espuña.
The predominant species of tree in the Sierra Espuña is the Aleppo pine
the species preferred by Ricardo Codorníu for the reforestation of the mountains in the late 19th century
although on higher ground it gives way to the European black pine
Around the water run-off channels and near the natural springs there are areas abounding in elms
together with a wide range of bushy plants including honeysuckle
wild roses and sarsaparilla. On some of the slopes the undergrowth is very thick
The differences between the slopes facing in different directions and with different types of exposure to the sun can be easily seen by the differences in the vegetation growing throughout the Sierra Espuña
the vegetation is characterised by the need to adapt to the extreme weather conditions
and consists mainly of broom (“Nun’s cushion”) and scale-leaf junipers
Among the insects present are some species which are unique to these mountains
such as the Spanish Argus species of butterfly
and the amphibians in the sierra include the natterjack toad and the Iberian painted frog
The reptile population includes the ocellated lizard
the snub-nosed viper and the Montpellier snake
But it is for its birdlife that the Sierra Espuña is most famed
The dense forests provide perfect homes for great tits
during the day the goshawk and the sparrowhawk constantly patrol the skies
while at night the park is one of the few places in the Region of Murcia where the calls of eagle owls and true owls can be heard
The edges of the pine forest and the hedgerows are home to buntings
and there are also significant populations of booted eagles and golden eagles
The presence of some of these species has led to the area being declared a Special Birdlife Protection Zone (ZEPA) of importance within the European Community
Without any doubt the star mammal in the sierra is the majestic but controversial Barbary sheep
This species is not a native of the park but is an “exotic” introduction to the area dating back to 1970
when it was brought to the area by hunters
Despite outbreaks of sarcoptic mange during the 1980s and 1990s the population grew rapidly to the point where a decision was made in the national courts of Spain that it should be eradicated
due to the threat posed to native goat species and the damage done to crops near the park
after years of disagreement a partial reprieve has been agreed on
with the species being limited in its growth but safeguarded from extinction in the Region of Murcia
As a result it is still possible for visitors to be privileged to a moment of admiration when unexpectedly confronting one of the animals while rounding a bend in the road or in a forest path
Another species which is very prominent in the Sierra Espuña is the wild boar
and these are also unpopular with farmers as they can cause a lot of damage to crops
There is evidence of boar right across the forest floor
turfed up soil looking as though a rotovator has been through the forest
making it a good place to head for to see the animals in the wild
Other mammal species here include red squirrels

Not all weekly markets are set in stone, and if they coincide with public holidays they may be cancelled or postponed. In addition, days can change, so if you're not sure a call to the relevant tourist office is advisable to avoid a wasted trip (click tourist Offices in the region of Murcia for more information)
As a general rule the weekly markets are open from 9.00 to 14.00
and for those from abroad are especially attractive as they offer an opportunity to buy fresh products and bargain clothes
Many also feature a range of products from plants and flowers to frying pans
baby clothes and electronic equipment: the larger the market
full of colour and noise as shoppers jostle for space
stand and socialize and generally enjoy the experience of shopping at a relaxed pace
choose stalls that have prices clearly marked and always ask for the receipt so you can check you've not been overcharged
Traders are obliged by law to give a receipt with a purchase
so don't be shy of asking for one if you feel the bill may not be correct
It's always advisable to check the bill and make sure that the correct price per kilo has been charged and the number of items you have corresponds to the receipt.(tícket or tiquet)
otherwise you will end up with more than you want and you'll be given the bruised items - this is not a cynical remark
crowded areas such as markets tend to attract them all the world over
The three weekly markets are on Mondays in the village of Macisvenda, Tuesdays in the village of Barinas and on Saturday in the centre of Abanilla itself, in Plaza de la Constitución, Plaza Purísima, Calle Pío XII and Calle Mayor. Click for more information
The weekly market is held on Friday morning in Placeta Solana Bajo - click for more information
and is in the Campoamor district (Calle Pedro Pérez García

while the other is the Mercado de Abajo in the district of San Pedro (Calle Ramón y Cajal
The weekly market is on Monday in and around the Plaza San José
Saturday: The main market in Molina is one of the largest in the Region of Murcia
with well over 400 stalls selling a huge range of food and other products

The two main weekly street markets in the city of Murcia are both held on Thursday morning
in Avenida La Fama and the district of Santa María de Gracia (mainly in Calle Auditórium
behind the Hospital de la Vega and the Parque de Fofó)
But Murcia is a huge municipality covering an area of almost 900 square kilometres
and in the other districts of the city and outlying towns and villages there are dozens of smaller markets every week
Monday: Algezares, Barqueros, Era Alta, Guadalupe, La Alberca, Lobosillo, Monteagudo, Puente Tocinos, Rincón de Seca, Sucina
Sunday: Barrio Ermita Rosario (Los Garres)
Barrio San José de la Montaña (Los Garres)

Alhama de Murcia lies in the heart of the Guadalentin Valley
giving it important arterial connections both throughout the Region of Murcia and into neighbouring provinces
It is well connected by rail and motorways and is close to the new Corvera International Airport
as well as 35 km of coastal beaches at Mazarrón
This has also attracted residential tourism initiatives
including the Condado de Alhama Urbanisation and Golf Course
Its flat plains give it an important agricultural industry
and the El Pozo plant is the region's largest employer
as part of an International Group with diverse interests in food products and construction
The name Alhama relates to the hot thermal waters which flowed until the 1930's and attracted both the Romans and the Moors to build thermal baths
which have today been converted into the town's Archaeological Museum
Alhama also has a well preserved Pósito
currently undergoing restoration and the Iglesia de san Lázaro
As well as the flat areas of Alhama which produce grapes, citrus products and irrigated crops, the municipality of Alhama has two important Sierras within it's borders, forming part of the Sierra de Carrascoy and the Sierra Espuña. The Sierra Espuña is an important tourist attraction for Alhama
walking routes and attractive pedanías
all of which add to its rural tourism offering
The town also has a busy and varied cultural programme, including the Romería of the Candelaria in February, Los Mayos, which celebrates the arrival of Spring in May, and an important Semana Santa celebration
as well as a busy cultural programme in the main town and outlying pedanías
