The feminist movement of Getxo has lamented that in recent weeks there has been "a machista and constant violence" in the municipality: "These latest facts give us to understand that the violence of the heteropatriarchal capitalist structural system is still more alive than ever by violating our bodies
they announced that they are not willing to normalize a violence that "is structural and systematic" and that
does not exist: "We are not willing to be subjected to violence against us," Lehendakari warned in a statement
They also wished to show their solidarity with the women
boys and girls who have suffered machista violence and their families: "We believe you!" "
male violence has hit the neighboring locality of the Gipuzkoan locality with force
the Local Police arrested a man accused of threatening and harming his sentimental partner
in which case the woman had to be taken to the hospital in Cruces
the Ertzaintza arrested a 44-year-old man in Getxo as the alleged perpetrator of two crimes of sexual abuse and sexual assault against two family members of minors
Upon completion of the police investigations
the detainee was brought to justice and the judge ordered his imprisonment
a woman filed a complaint with the Ertzaintza on 2 May
the investigation revealed that another of the daughters of the complainant
had also been the victim of the detained man
Jon Barrenetxea (Movistar) took a decisive victory at the 79th edition Circuito de Getxo - Memorial Hermanos Otxoa with an impressive attack on the savage uphill finish of the Basque race
Amongst the contenders in the final climb were Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) and Clement Champoussin (Arkéa-B&B Hotels)
but Simmons faded on the final ascent while Champoussin managed to sprint for second place
Orluis Aular (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) rounded out the podium.
The day was marked by exceptionally high temperatures
as a breakaway group formed early in the race but was reeled in with 50km left
The peloton became fragmented, though, within the race’s final finishing circuits as a group of 20 riders emerged containing, amongst others, Javier Romo (Movistar), Einer Rubio (Movistar)
The group shed multiple riders on the steep 10% inclines of Alto de Pike before Barrenetxea emerged victorious on the short but testing final ascent into Getxo

Music is the leitmotiv of the flat in the Las Arenas district of Getxo
In fact it has been refurbished by the designers Ane Arce and Iñigo Berasategui of Bear Architects to meet the needs of its owners
After demolishing the internal partitions of the flat
whose position is still marked by the pillars
the architects have introduced a set of shelves that
there is the secret passage leading to the private spaces of the home: a simple press triggers the mechanism built into the ceiling (Fritz Jurgens) and a portion of the shelving moves rotating through 90 degrees and revealing the other rooms
can be detached from the structure and turned into a console for the stereo system on which to play the records
SpainFounded in 2016 and specializing in interior design
the studio is headed by Ane Arce and Iñigo Berasategui
Active in the creation of a network of young Basque designers
they are convinced that architecture has a central role to play in restoring the balance of the planet
And are waiting for politicians to recognize the fact

they can always dig up another nasty brute of a climb just when you thought the last one was bad enough
This year’s addition to the finale is the Pilotegi and it looks like great fun/no fun at all depending on if you are in front of the TV or riding it
I don’t think he’s ever really won a one day race ever but what if he has anger in his stomach that everyone is gushing about what an allrounder Tadej is and wants to do something about it

Elie Gesbert comes back to racingPresentationAug 10
The Basque event will mark the return to competition of Élie Gesbert
It's finally time to start running again
I'm delighted to be hanging up a number on my ARKEA-B&B HOTELS jersey after a long period without running following my iliac artery operation
I'm also coming off a training camp with my team-mates
But Getxo will enable me to get back to my job as a professional cyclist
even if I'm aware of the unknown that awaits me
as it is every time you return to competition after several months' absence
The Circuito de Getxo is a tough 200-kilometre event with a 2,500-metre gradient
The first is a loop to be completed five times
followed by the final circuit to be completed twice
which includes the final climb that graced the first stage of the 2023 Tour de France in Bilbao
That just goes to show the level of difficulty
Laurens Huys and Simon Guglielmi will be there to help us get a result
It's also worth noting that the Circuito de Getxo will be Élie Gesbert's comeback race after his iliac artery operation
Cristiàn Rodriguez 11th overall
The Vuelta Femenina, a special jersey
Cristián Rodríguez 6th in the queen stage
Clémence Latimier joins the ARKEA-B&B HOTELS team
It has been 19 years since the occupation of what used to be the Scarecrow Youth Center, which is now the occupied area of Kabia. What has been the path of almost two decades in this area?
Even with the neighbors, we have recently had an exchange to promote and preserve coexistence, and we have the feeling that in general they see the project favorably and notice the effort we make to be respectful with the environment and the neighboring neighbors.
How are you going to celebrate this anniversary?
And, looking to the future, how do you foresee the path of the occupied space?
In reality, we can now say that the occupied area of Kabia is in an unstable situation as a result of the HAPO approved by the City of Getxo, as this urbanization plan foresees the dismantling of Kabia and the construction of luxury homes in it.
In any case, although this uncertainty is there, we have no intention of discouraging it, we are carrying out the project and we will continue to do so in the future. An example of this is the 19th anniversary that we will celebrate soon, not the maintenance or improvement of the Cabia that we have done recently, such as the renovation of a large part of the roof, the reform of the kitchen, the renovation of the recording room, the chicken coop, the ortho...
In addition, in the town we have the platform to stop this HAPO and in the short term one of our objectives will be to give visibility to this struggle, especially to the collection of signatures that are being carried out to organize the popular consultation around the HAPO.
However, if the urbanization plan advances, we will begin to work intensively to combat dismissal. Because we are convinced that sites and projects such as Kabia are essential for every people and every region. Because it is an area that allows young people to organize themselves through different initiatives, for example: conferences, concerts, festivals, mountain outings, local rehearsal for musical groups, ortho, hens...

From the moment you pass through the stone archway
you become part of a story that dates back to the early 20th century
Far from making guests feel like intruders
you will soon be playing a starring role in the drama of the hotel’s newest chapter
And there are plenty of opportunities to interact with some big names
There are works of art by Sonia Delaunay and František Kupka to admire and recipes by Bilbao chef Beñat Ormaetxea to savor
Fernando María Ybarra commissioned his architect brother-in-law to design and build a palace on the cliff of the Bay of Abra
where a large part of Bilbao’s bourgeoisie was moving in search of an alternative to the increasingly crowded city
Thanks to the early 20th-century Basque passion for all things English
the design included Queen Anne-style and neo-Gothic elements
making it one of the most original manifestations of this unusual style of architecture
the building underwent several transformations
and during the 1930s and 1940s it was even divided into three separate homes,” says Fernando Pereira
“It was adapted to the different needs of the Ybarra family
saw that the building needed to be renovated and restored
they managed to rehabilitate the palace – which has been a landmark building since 2001 – and by preserving it
offer other people the chance to enjoy it.”
Sixteen of the superior rooms are located in the pergola
where the Ybarra family used to stroll on rainy days
Junior Suites have individual terraces and views of the croquet lawn
which also has a beautiful seating area with stained-glass windows
The Marina Suites have terraces or balconies
the hotel's equivalent of the presidential suite
the velvet curtains prevent light from interrupting the sleep of even fitful sleepers
and the amenities are from Frederic Malle's Editions de Parfums line for hotels
Renowned chef Beñat Ormaetxea presides over the hotel’s three restaurants
His menu will surprise diners at the Delaunay Restaurant with its innovative approach to traditional Basque flavours
in addition to an a la carte menu which includes some of the star dishes from his celebrated Jauregibarria Jatetxea restaurant in Amorebieta
Some of the musts include the sliced cod in a brandade foam
and plankton; the pink shrimp with an Iberian lard broth and spicy seaweed; the free-range chicken eggs cooked at low temperature with sweet pepper broth; and the spectacular “baserria km-0” oxtail cannelloni
The hotel’s cellar has many traditional txakoli
to choose from like the Torre Loizaga– fresh
and even a secret door) and the palace’s former chapel (with its original colourful stained glass windows) have been transformed into the English-style cocktail bar Kupka
In addition to serving classic and signature cocktails
the bar offers a tempting menu of starters
such as salted anchovies from Bermeo with toast and smoked butter
Traveling to swim in the sea has played a fundamental role in the history of Getxo
The first seaside spa was built in 1886 in Neguri
Neguri Spa & Wellness pays tribute to this legacy and to the town’s long connection with the sea
The spa facilities include a relaxation room
What better way to end the day than with a relaxing massage or facial treatment
The hotel offers a Guest Relations and Concierge service
which will organize all the visits and experiences that guests may want
In addition to having provided the Palacio Arriluce with another life as a hotel and having reused much of the existing furniture and materials in the restoration of the building, the hotel is also committed to eliminating the use of plastic.
The entire hotel is adapted to accommodate people with reduced mobility. They have accessible rooms, ramps, and lifts to the swimming pool area and to access the rooms on the upper floors.

Vizcaya Bridge straddles the mouth of the Ibaizabal estuary
It was designed by the Basque architect Alberto de Palacio and completed in 1893
The 45-m-high bridge with its span of 160 m
merges 19th-century ironworking traditions with the then new lightweight technology of twisted steel ropes
It was the first bridge in the world to carry people and traffic on a high suspended gondola and was used as a model for many similar bridges in Europe
Africa and the America only a few of which survive
With its innovative use of lightweight twisted steel cables
it is regarded as one of the outstanding architectural iron constructions of the Industrial Revolution
The Monumental Vizcaya Hanging Bridge is an infrastructure located in the north of the Iberian Peninsula
at the point where the navigable estuary of Bilbao opens out to the sea
thereby connecting the municipalities of Getxo and Portugalete
who devised the first bridge in the world with a hanging transporter – which transports passengers and vehicles by means of a gondola suspended high above the passing ships
Its construction is outstanding for merging 19th-century ironworking traditions
with the new lightweight technology of twisted steel cables
designed by the Frenchman Ferdinand Arnodin
Constructed on private initiative between 1887 and 1893
the bridge has worked almost without interruption since it was built
The bridge follows the style of the mining aerial tramways and constitutes an outstanding example of architectural minimalism
It is composed of four riveted lattice steel towers
are parabolic cables from which the upper crossbeam hangs
suspended 45 metres above sea level at high tide
In order not to interfere with the navigation
a mechanical trolley runs along the crossbeam
from which a platform hangs at the same height as the banks: this is the gondola
capable of transporting around twelve vehicles and some two hundred people
It is known for its aesthetic qualities and constitutes the first bridge in the world to transport passengers using a mechanical
one of the most outstanding iron architectural constructions of the European industrial revolution
was hugely innovative due to the fact that it allowed the passage of ships on a wide estuary
with no need for ramps or for raising and lowering of the bridge
introduced a new solution to meet the requirements at hand and a new method of transport
it represents the ironworking methods practiced in the Basque region
starting with exploitation of the local iron ore deposits in Roman times until reaching the peak of its production in the industrial revolution
given that it was used as a new model for many other transporter bridges of similar characteristics in Europe
Criterion (i): For being a surprising work that perfectly combines beauty
aesthetics and functionality: the Vizcaya Bridge is a spectacular and aesthetically pleasing addition to the river estuary and an exceptional expression of technical creativity
reflecting a completely satisfactory relationship between form and function
Criterion (ii): For its innovative nature from the technological point of view and its condition of pioneer in this kind of constructions: the Vizcaya Bridge
by means of developing a hanging transporter mechanism and merging ironmaking technology with the use of new steel cables
created a new form of construction which influenced the design of bridges all over the world in the three subsequent decades
and exported French and Spanish technologies
The Bridge was opened on 28 July 1893 and has operated continuously ever since
except during the Spanish Civil War from 1937 to 1941
a period when the damage suffered caused the platform to fall into the estuary
the company responsible for its management
went about important work to remove different installations added to the Bridge
which were causing it increasing stress and damage
Outstanding among these were the replacement of seriously damaged structural elements and the strengthening of others
Cutting-edge control and protection systems were also introduced
lifts were added to two of the towers and the former tollbooths were demolished to free up space around the original structure
Today the Bridge is in a very good state of preservation and
includes all essential elements of the original structure that define it as a working transporter bridge
The in-depth restoration of the Bridge’s vital elements was implemented due to the need to preserve the original elements; these have saved the Bridge from inevitable technical decline while contributing to the integrity of its structure
The modifications made to the Gondola and power systems serve as an example in the preservation of original functioning structural elements and
in conserving the integrity of the structure as a working bridge
It should be remembered that today only eight of the more than twenty transporter bridges built in the world are still standing
the Vizcaya Bridge has undergone partial updates and modernisations to meet the new necessities as they arose
with no detriment to the essential characteristics that lend it its value
These interventions (replacement of the gondola
etc.) have been necessary to keep the bridge in operation and to preserve its authenticity as an operating structure
the new systems are not the same as the originals
they do offer a technical solution to current requirements
lending greater safety and durability to the structure as a whole
the gondola was replaced with a lighter version and the iron wheels on the upper rails holding it in place were replaced with polyurethane rollers to cushion the movements
The Bridge continues to offer a continuous service between the two towns
which have developed new industries related to tourism and the new port
important engineering work was carried out on the Vizcaya Bridge to renew its interior and exterior structure
but maintaining and always remaining faithful to the value of their authenticity
and without interrupting its use at any time
Having made an exhaustive analysis of the Bridge structure
it was found that the jet-black colour absorbed excessive radiation
which generated structural fatigue in the steel of the towers and crossbeam
The decision was therefore taken to change the colour to “Vena Roja Hematites Somorrostro”
the most effective for future preservation of the structure
approved by Decree 2003 in accordance with Law 7/1990
both Getxo and Portugalete have Development Plans under which the Bridge environment is protected
The Bridge is the property of the Spanish State which
through its Ministry of Public Works and Transport
delegates its responsibilities to the National Port Authority which
delegates many decisions to the Bilbao Port Authority
has held the concession to manage the bridge
running until 2025 and giving work to some 30 people
The Bridge is managed by different bodies with the core objective of developing cultural tourism
With a view to guaranteeing its preservation and authenticity
while also coordinating the different actions and promoting the Bridge and the areas around it
at the moment of the World Heritage declaration
representatives of the Ministry of Culture
of the Municipal Councils of Portugalete and Getxo
an Institutional Panel was constituted to monitor the different works carried out and the holding of events
a Board of Trustees was appointed to carry out projects related to the objectives of the said Plan
also creating an Advisory Committee for the purposes of studies
a Technical Team puts the plans approved into action and controls the documentation

who dominated the U23 Giro d'Italia last year before turning professional with UAE in the second half of 2021
has made steps forward this season but Sunday was a major milestone.
Ayuso reached the finish of the one-day race in a four-man group and proved the fastest to raise his arms for the first time in his pro career.
The 19-year-old beat fellow youngster Andrea Piccolo (Androni-Drone Hopper) to the line
with Wilco Kelderman (Bora-Hansgrohe) third
Valentin Ferron (TotalEnergies) was the final member of the lead group across the line in the sprint
Ayuso came out on top in the 77th edition of a Basque one-day race that honours the memory of the Otxoa brothers
Sunday's race covered 196.5km across six laps of a hilly circuit.
despite not managing to get rid of everyone on the short sharp climbs
still had enough in the tank to outpace the final three in the dash for the line.
"I want to thank the whole team because they worked for me and believed in me
At last my first professional victory has arrived."
The victory on home soil will raise hopes in Ayuso ahead of his expected Grand Tour debut at the Vuelta a España

Lutsenko attacks breakaway to win alone ahead of Gallopin and Velasco
Alexey Lutsenko (Astana-Qazaqstan) attacked away from a six-man breakaway group to ride to solo victory at the 78th edition of the Circuito de Getxo-Memorial Hermanos Otxoa 2023
Lutsenko avoided disaster as he took the wrong turn at a roundabout with 12km remaining
losing at least 15 seconds of his advantage
he managed to navigate back to the course and hold onto his advantage entering the final 10km
Lutsenko held his advantage and entered the aggressive final ramp of the course with an advantage of just over 30 seconds on the group of chasers
themselves fending off a chase from Trentin who had been dropped kilometres earlier
Tony Gallopin attacked his breakaway companions to take second place
while Lutsenko’s teammate Velasco took third place in the Basque one-day 193.3km race that honours the memory of the Otxoa brothers
Lutsenko thanked his team for the support in the breakaway and control of the peloton
Second place Gallopin also spoke after the finish
“I’ve only just finished the Tour de France and I’m tired," he said
I wasn’t expecting to have a race like that - I was planning to work for the team and Tom Skujiņš
When we came on the flat in the end we could see that we could not come back on him
So I said to Tom we have to be on the podium.
"To finish second here is a big emotion and big surprise..
the best way I can go out of the País Vasco here," he added

The first few days in July host a series of concerts held in different settings involving major figures from the international jazz scene
The aim is to provide the best of world jazz
while at the same time showcasing young talent
The main venue is Muxikebarri – Getxo’s Art
Culture and Conference Centre located at Avenida Basagoiti
Other sites for gigs are the square in Algorta
Besides the concerts featuring leading jazz performers
the festival promotes concerts by young musicians through the group competition
which is open to all those European ensembles that play jazz in any of its styles or tendencies
It also holds concerts in the traditional section called Tercer Milenio [Third Millennium]
which supports the country’s own performers
and an open-air Concert for a younger audience
The programme is rounded off with other formats
This means the festival is divided into the following components:
Getxo Jazz has been graced by leading national and international jazz performers
with such famous names as Branford Marsalis
and Dee Dee Bridgewater. The first Getxo Jazz was held in 1975 as a small
low-budget event held in the Old Port - Puerto Viejo and organised by the San Ignacio Festival Committee
Despite the amateur nature of the organisation
dedication and tenacity saw the festival grow and become more successful from one year to the next
An interesting fact is the performance at the festival of a young Sting
who at the time was a member of the group Last Exit
Getxo Jazz began to acquire its own identity
it became part of an umbrella project rolled out by the Getxo Culture Centre
and 1986 saw the launch of the nationwide Group Competition
which led to the appearance of global jazz masters
becoming the Festival de Jazz de Getxo Europar Jazzaldia
This specialisation responds to the fact that this continent hosts a huge variety of jazz of the highest quality that is rarely performed
The festival provides a blend of established artists and unknown performers
with quality always being the main consideration.Over the years
the festival has gone from strength to strength: the Group Competition has also welcomed young European performers
with some of the foremost US jazz musicians also performing on our festival’s main stage
with other sections and formats also being organised
With a trajectory stretching back 45 years
Getxo Jazz is now a fully consolidated festival

2023 Euskal Non-League Day: Arenas Club de Getxo NewsImagesSep 7
2023Euskal Non-League Day: Arenas Club de Getxo
Copa winner in 1919 and one of LaLiga's founding clubs in 1928
Arenas Club de Getxo spent seven seasons in the Primera División
Of all of Athletic Club's affiliate clubs
Arenas Club de Getxo are the only side that can boast of being one of LaLiga's founding teams and of having played in the Primera División for seven seasons
Arenas' golden age came before the Spanish Civil War
when they achieved their greatest feat in becoming the 1919 Copa champions
A host of pioneering footballers played for Arenas during that period
José María Jáuregui and the Lion Félix Sesumaga
all of them also played internation football for the Spanish national team
Pagaza and Sesumaga won silver at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp
Arenas played five seasons in the Second Division
followed by a long stretch in which they alternated between the Tercera División and the Regional Preferente
except for one solitary season in the Segunda División B in 1979
Arenas were finally promoted back to Segunda B in 2015 thanks to the impetus of a new board
and in 2022 they reached the play-offs for promotion to the new 1st RFEF
The Euskal Non-League Day match between Arenas and Barakaldo
to be played at Gobela on Saturday (19:00 CEST)
is a unique opportunity to witness a duel between two of the most influential Basque clubs in Athletic Club's 125 years of history
A host of players have donned both the red-and-black jersey of Arenas and the red-and-white of Athletic: Félix Sesumaga
Arenas' opponents on Euskal Non-League Day also boast a number of historic players who
Travieso and Miguel Gainza (brother of the legendary Piru Gainza) also played for Arenas
Other outstanding Lions who played for Barakaldo include Venancio Perez
These four adjectives reflect the spirit of Algorta Old Port
enamours any passer-by who ventures into its steep
Its traditional whitewashed fishermen’s cottages
surrounded by the southern waters of the Cantabrian Sea invite us to imagine how its inhabitants
inshore fishermen and Algorta pilots who helped ships enter and leave Bilbao
Like many other fishing ports in Euskadi such as Bermeo and Lekeitio
seafarking crews from Getxo included a young apprentice or cabin-boy who was the youngest crew member
this young fishing apprentice was given the nickname of “Txo”
an affectionate diminutive of the popular expression “mutiltxo” (boy in Euskera)
being a Txo was a very typical job in the southern waters of the Cantabrian Sea
before reaching the rank of fisherman or arrantzale included waking up the crews at dawn by calling from door to door
as well as ringing a bell located on the balcony of one of the humble homes in the Old Port or Portu Zaharra
It was also he who gathered volunteers and pilots from Getxo to help ships dodge the sandbanks in the Bilbao estuary mouth
With no time for a break he had to mend sails and do what the skipper ordered
and as the Txo gradually learned what to do
getting ready to be like the rest of the crew
when the sea was calm he was allowed to take the helm of the vessel
The grandparents or aitites fondly recall this figure
as he embodies the essence of an Algorta seaman: Plainness
Miren Larrea explains the hard life of a Txo in the early 20 th century:
This emblematic location in the town of Getxo wanted to pay tribute to the figure of the Txo
creating today’s symbol of the district’s popular festivities - a handmade dummy
in the Algorta Old Port festivities (San Nicolás’ Day
the figure of the Txo becomes the festivity icon when it reaches the port by boat
it is burnt on part of the town wall to bring the festivities to a close until the following year

The first paellas’ party was held on 25 July 1956 when three inseparable friends
promoted what in a few years would become known as the “Getxo Paellas Competition”
Nowadays the Itxas Argia society is entrusted with organising this popular event which this year will celebrate its 62nd anniversary
Over time this celebration was gained in popularity and is has now become one of the events most looked forward to by the people from Getxo
Every year thousands of people some to the fields of Aixerrota to eat paella and enjoy the day in the best way possible
The repeated presence of groups from other countries
have made the competition truly INTERNATIONAL in nature
A Castilla squad missing some star players due to international duty had to take on the challenge of facing Arenas de Getxo tonight
Achraf Hakimi and Luca Zidane were all away with their nations
whilst Abner was giving it a rest to avoid further injury
The stadium Castilla travelled to had an artificial surface
and it did seem to affect the way the game was played
although it didn't make too much of a difference
The game started off pretty scrappy and a midfield of Tena-Valverde-Febas were unable to get the ball down and control the play
That changed about half-way through the half as Castilla started to play their passing game
They were rewarded when a good Luismi Quezada cross found Febas
who's strike was really luckily deflected into the net to give Castilla the 1-0 lead
as Arenas attacked before finding a good cross of their own and finishing off a good move nicely
There was not enough time for anymore goals
and both teams went into half time with a goal a piece
GOAL 37' @FebasAleix! Assisted by @luismiquezada3! 1-0 Castilla!! #RealMadridCastilla #RealMadridCastillaLive pic.twitter.com/maIJKsdsi1
but it started to liven up when Nikos Vergos hit the bar from a silly distance out
It seems the Castilla players have a bet on about who can score from the furthest distance
and to be fair every effort I've seen has made the keeper worry
Arenas then hit the post with a really good header before Castilla took control again
Cèdres came on for Vergos in an attempt to change it up
but ultimately the change didn't work as planned and Castilla were unable to find a winning goal
Man of the Match was a really difficult choice to make this week
and added to his already brilliant start to the season
Castilla are next in action when they host UD Logroñés in a highly anticipated match-up

Cruise lines are starting to change their routes towards more "tourist-friendly" destinations following mass anti-tourism protests throughout Spain
The cruise industry will increase its capacity by 10% in the next five years
according to forecasts by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA)
which rules out the anti-tourism movement in Spain affecting its turnover
but will affect the destinations to which they travel
"Tourism-phobia is not only a problem in Spain
but also in France and other Mediterranean countries
but visitors are increasingly sensitive and the scenes that have been seen in places like Barcelona have an impact on the reputation of the destination," said Marie Caroline Laurent
pointed out there are countries such as Saudi Arabia and others in the surrounding area that are making "millionaire investments" in boosting their tourism sector and are welcoming tourists with open arms
"As dialogue with the city council of Barcelona
it will result in cancellations and dissatisfaction among tourists," they said at a press conference
where they called on the authorities to stop "demonising" tourism and to start regulating tourism better in a bid to understand the protestors' demands
was the cruise industry's turnover in Spain in 2022
but also to change the cities where tourists arrive in Spain
"all that is needed is for those responsible for promoting tourism in the country to offer foreigners the opportunity to visit other attractive cities" such as La Coruña
A total of 60% of cruise passengers repeat the experience
so it is "essential" to seek new destinations to which to take the thousands of tourists who board a ship every month
Forecasts suggest tourism will account for 17% of Spain's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in ten years' time
so this part of the economy needs to be managed "at a much higher level"
And the cruise industry will be an important part of this
as some 50 ships will be added in the next five years to the 300 that currently sail the seas
Spain is the fourth largest outbound market in Europe and the ninth largest in the world for cruise passengers
a total of 586,800 Spaniards travelled on cruises
with the main destinations the Mediterranean and northern Europe
The demand has sparked ports to become more environmentally friendly
it needs to keep the engine running to supply energy
if docks are electrified (an EU obligation for major ports by 2030) ships could be connected to the grid and switch off engines
Cruise companies are already investing in this and currently 40% of the fleet has this capability
Serrano warned that only 16 ports in Europe currently have this capacity
100 million euros are being invested to set it up
with the ports of Bilbao and Cadiz also studying the possibility
"The technology exists and many ships already have it

Today is the fourth day of my 7-night Spain & France cruise on Anthem of the Seas
Spain this morning and I woke up eager to explore the largest city in the Basque Country
Bilbao is the most populous city in Spain’s Biscay province
located in the north-central part of the country
an autonomous community in northern Spain and southern France (near the Pyrenees)
and is one of the oldest ethnic groups in all of Europe
It’s said the Basque people arrived in Europe around 5,000 years ago
and they have maintained strong cultural identity and culture despite countless invasions and outside influences over the years
Basque language (called Euskara) is a language isolate
meaning it has no relation to any other known languages spoken around the globe today
a city on the coast just eight miles from downtown Bilbao
my first glimpse of Getxo made me even more excited to see what northern Spain has to offer
I disembarked the ship around 8:45AM and boarded a shuttle bus that would bring passengers to Bilbao’s city center
The shuttle bus was €10 for roundtrip transportation (payable in cash) and left directly from Bilbao’s cruise terminal
While it’s possible to reach Bilbao via metro from Getxo
the shuttle bus was very convenient and took around 25 minutes to reach the city
I walked a few minutes to the Estuary of Bilbao
a waterway flowing through the city center
The first thing I noticed was the Guggenheim Museum
a contemporary art museum known for its otherworldly architecture
which is one of the main tourist attractions in Bilbao
I was certainly impressed by the look of the outside
The pathway along the Estuary of Bilbao is really nice
and plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the view
I walked along the path until I arrived in Casco Viejo
Quite different from the modern architecture found at the Guggenheim museum just a short distance away
Casco Viejo was lined with narrow streets packed with restaurants
a two-story food hall and market in Bilbao
While I wasn't feeling particularly hungry
the local dishes looked too amazing to pass up
but in the Basque Country these small plates are known as pintxos
Pintxos are traditionally designed to be eaten with one hand
with a toothpick placed in the center of each pintxo
but I ordered the classic tortilla de patatas (potato omelette) and gratinado de cuatro quesos (4 cheese bake)
The cheese pintxo was my favorite of the two
and it had such a robust and unique flavor that I wished I had been hungry enough to order another
I enjoyed the pintxos with a glass of fresh squeezed zumo de naranja (orange juice)
which is set up with plenty of stalls selling produce
After walking around Casco Viejo for another hour or so
Bilbao's city center is connected to Getxo via a direct metro line
so I decided to take the metro back instead of the shuttle bus
I did not want to wait around for the bus to return
The metro would also drop me off directly in Getxo’s city center as opposed to the ship
I arrived in Getxo for the second half of my day exploring northern Spain
Getxo is known for the Bizkaia (Vizkaya) Bridge
transporter bridge and UNESCO world heritage site
it is the world’s oldest transporter bridge
which connects the towns of Getxo and Portugalete without disrupting ship traffic
You can cross the bridge two ways: through a large moving platform (for pedestrians
etc.) or through a pedestrian walkway at the top of the bridge
I purchased a ticket to visit the top of the bridge for a scenic walk across the water
but are just one-way for the upper walkway
I first traveled on the bridge from Getxo to Portugalete via the larger platform
I enjoyed a tasty snack of churros con chocolate
My return journey was nothing short of exciting
which is unlike any bridge I’ve seen before
The views of Getxo and Portugalete were amazing from up high
and I even caught a few nice views of Anthem of the Seas
I spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing in Getxo's harbor enjoying the comfortable (while slightly chilly) weather
Walking back to the ship from downtown Getxo was a breeze
with a pedestrian pathway along the coastline
I also got to chat with an Anthem of the Seas crew member, Fernando from the Philippines, on my walk back! He was filming a video for his YouTube channel
Having multiple port days in a row is definitely tiring
so I took a short rest in my stateroom once I got back before getting ready for dinner
Samantha and I enjoyed another meal in the Main Dining Room tonight and the quality and service were up to par
My one "complaint" with the Main Dining Room is that I have absolutely no self control over the bread basket and tend to get full before my main course even arrives
I was feeling super tired from my day walking around Bilbao and Getxo
so I spent the rest of the evening relaxing in the Solarium and catching up on Royal Caribbean Blog work at Vintages (yes
a wine bar makes for a great office) before heading to bed
which is located in the country's Galicia region
so I can't wait to see what the other ports have in store
