Granadilla de Abona has become the first municipality in Tenerife to establish official regulations for holiday rental properties
approved unanimously by the local council yesterday (Thursday)
will come into effect 20 days after its publication in the Boletín Oficial de la Provincia de Santa Cruz de Tenerife
described the measure as a bold step and a significant milestone in the municipality’s housing strategy
She emphasised that the ordinance directly addresses one of the main concerns of local residents
the housing crisis and the right to access affordable housing
Key Aspects of the Holiday Rental Regulation
The new ordinance stipulates that only properties built in accordance with urban planning regulations
and with necessary permits will be eligible for holiday rentals
rental activities will be restricted to ground-floor units
Properties that are outside urban planning regulations
or located in officially designated high-demand housing areas will not be permitted for holiday rentals
Urban Planning Councillor Óscar Delgado stated that the ordinance seeks to regulate an industry that
particularly concerning community relations and housing availability
He stressed the importance of protecting residents' right to housing and quality of life
particularly amid the ongoing housing crisis
Delgado also highlighted that the initiative reflects "realistic and effective policymaking that prioritises the needs of the majority."
Granadilla de Abona has also been proactive in tackling the wider housing crisis
The municipality is the second in the Canary Islands to formally request a study for high-demand housing designation
It has also submitted formal proposals and facilitated collaboration between different government bodies
the municipality has allocated land for the construction of 59 publicly funded homes and supported private sector investment
leading to the development of over 300 affordable rental units
significant public funds have been allocated for acquiring vacant properties to be repurposed as affordable rental housing
A much-loved picnic area in the south of Tenerife has been left looking like a rubbish tip after careless visitors abandoned piles of rubbish over the weekend
Shocking footage shared by the Department of Public Works at Granadilla de Abona Town Hall shows the municipal picnic area covered in litter
food containers and rubbish scattered across the grounds
Council officials have slammed the behaviour
warning that it is "everyone’s responsibility to care for our environment and leave it as we found it"
They also reminded the public that the more the community looks after public spaces
The scenes have sparked fury on social media
where disgusted residents and holidaymakers branded the behaviour "shameful"
Some even called for the popular spot to be shut down altogether
claiming that if visitors cannot follow basic rules
they should not be allowed to use the facilities at all
It remains unclear whether the Town Hall will introduce tougher measures to prevent future incidents
they are pleading with the public to show more respect for shared spaces and dispose of their rubbish properly

LGBTIQA+ organisations are worried about a potential shift in local government that could bring far-right politics to Arona and Granadilla de Abona in the south of Tenerife
and Caminar Intersex are opposing a vote of no confidence against the current administration
This motion is supported by Coalition Canaria (CC)
which together would govern about 140,000 people in southern Tenerife
including important towns like Granadilla and Arona
The vote of no confidence was confirmed yesterday
with spokesperson Marcos Antonio Rodríguez involved
Although he hinted that he might leave the PP
he ultimately signed the motion to remove Socialist Mayor Jennifer Miranda and replace her with Domingo Regalado (CC)
felt compelled to speak out because they believe VOX's policies could negatively impact women
They are requesting an urgent meeting with Coalition Canaria’s leaders
urging them to stop collaborating with the far-right party
The vote on the motion is scheduled for March 26.th
and activists have warned that if it passes
they will cut ties with the local government but will continue to support residents independently
They plan to end any joint projects with the council to protect marginalised communities
Coalition Canaria’s decision to partner with VOX has raised concerns
especially since party leader Fernando Clavijo
recently said that VOX "cannot be trusted" due to their controversial views
This move marks the third partnership between CC and VOX in the Canary Islands
despite past promises not to ally with extreme parties
A 35-year-old woman was hospitalised yesterday afternoon (Friday) following a serious quad bike accident in Granadilla de Abona
The incident occurred at around 5:00pm on Calle Orchilla
when the vehicle reportedly crashed into a wall
according to the Emergency and Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) who received a call alerting them to the accident
which left the rider in need of urgent medical attention
Emergency responders were immediately dispatched to the scene
where paramedics treated the woman at the site before transferring her to hospital by ambulance with moderate trauma injuries
The police have not released further details on the circumstances of the crash
but the incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved in handling quad bikes
In a significant move to address housing problems
the Granadilla de Abona City Council unanimously approved the municipality's first ordinance yesterday (Thursday) to regulate holiday rentals in residential homes and complexes located in the municipality which includes El Medano
forms part of a broader strategy aimed at tackling housing issues in the south of Tenerife
which is considered one of the most pressing concerns across the Canary Islands
introduced by Deputy Mayor and Urban Planning Councillor Óscar Delgado
is designed to establish a balance between residential needs and the tourism-driven holiday rental market
“We recognise the value of holiday rentals
but we must also address their challenges,” he explained
emphasising the urgent need for this measure
The ordinance aims to introduce intensity limits on land designated for residential use
fostering harmonious coexistence between residents and rental property owners
representing over 9% of the municipality’s housing stock
Mayor Miranda highlighted the significance of the decision
thanking the council for its unified support
She called on the Canary Islands Government and other relevant authorities to heed Granadilla’s requests for additional support
including a temporary moratorium on holiday rentals and the creation of an inspectorate to address irregular building practices
Through the Canary Federation of Municipalities (FECAM)
the council has urged regional action to tackle housing shortages and support compliance with rental regulations
This ordinance aims to improve housing availability by ensuring that properties used for short-term rentals adhere to legal standards without restricting all holiday rentals
Councillor Marcos Antonio Rodríguez
emphasised that this ordinance is an essential tool for addressing the municipality's housing crisis
reinforcing the local government’s commitment to its residents
This ordinance underscores Granadilla de Abona’s proactive stance on regulating the holiday rental sector to protect the municipality’s housing stock and promote fair and accessible living conditions for all residents
The Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) have reported that a traffic accident on the TF-28 road in Granadilla de Abona
resulted in three people being injured with varying degrees of severity
They received an alert just after 11:00pm and dispatched the necessary emergency resources to the location given
Medical personnel arrived at the scene to find the occupants already outside the overturned vehicle and provided immediate care on-site before transferring the injured to hospitals for further treatment
Among the injured was a man who sustained moderate multiple injuries and was taken to the Hospiten Sur hospital
Two women were also injured: one suffered minor cervical trauma
while the other experienced moderate multiple injuries
Both were taken to the Hospital del Sur by ambulances
The Guardia Civil are conducting an investigation into the cause of the accident and as to why the vehicle overturned
the Tenerife Cabildo Road Maintenance Service worked to clean the road and restore safe driving conditions
Thanks to the quick response from emergency teams
and efforts were made to ensure the safety of the affected area
The injured individuals are now recovering in hospital under medical supervision
The southern region of Tenerife has experienced a remarkable population boom since the year 2000
according to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE)
local municipalities suggest the actual figure may now exceed 190,000 residents since then
one of the major tourism hubs with the highest concentration of hotel accommodation on the island
has seen the most significant population growth
Its resident count surged from 14,007 at the start of the century to 50,167
Other southern municipalities also show sharp growth
going from 7,315 residents in 2000 to 22,606 today
Granadilla de Abona’s population grew by 170%
the most populous municipality in the south of Tenerife
saw a 121% increase from 38,416 to 85,249 residents
with its population increasing by 116% to reach 28,694
the southern region now boasts a population of 317,000
Experts attribute this population surge in the south to strong migration trends driven by job opportunities in the tourism industry
with prohibitively high rental and purchase prices
The demographic profile in the South is generally younger compared to the northern and metropolitan areas
helping offset the overall decline in birth rates on the island
Contrasting Trends in Santa Cruz and La Laguna
have seen a near 120% population increase (adding 170,834 residents since 2000)
The capital has lost 5,737 residents over the past two decades
with the current population standing at 209,395
the neighbouring municipality of La Laguna has shown significant growth
bringing its population from 126,543 to 159,034 today
This population shift highlights the growing appeal of the southern part of Tenerife as a place of residence
driven largely by its economic opportunities and younger demographic profile
located in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona
has officially reopened for public use after being closed earlier in the week due to concerns over water quality
The decision to lift the ban was made yesterday after receiving the results of new tests
which confirmed that the water is now safe for swimming again
with contamination levels falling within acceptable limits
The beach was closed on Tuesday (October 15th) by the council
when water tests revealed a higher-than-permitted level of enterococci bacteria
They took immediate action by temporarily prohibiting swimming and raising a red flag to alert beachgoers
to protect the public while awaiting the results of further testing
While the water sample taken on Tuesday showed a slight exceedance of the maximum allowed bacterial levels
prior testing over the past several weeks had indicated consistently good water quality
with results being revealed the following day
ensuring continuous monitoring of water conditions
The reopening of the central beach in El Médano comes as welcome news to both locals and visitors
especially as it is a popular weekend destination
The beach is part of a broader network of ten coastal areas monitored by the Granadilla de Abona authorities
This monitoring aims to ensure the safety and quality of the waters across these popular beaches
providing regular updates to the public and taking swift action when necessary to safeguard the health of anyone who goes into the water
Construction of the Tenerife Motor Circuit has resumed in the Atogo area of Granadilla de Abona
sparking concerns from local residents and the social archaeology group
members of Imastanen visited the site yesterday morning (Saturday)
documenting newly installed signs and speaking with workers responsible for the excavation
The group raised concerns about the potential impact on nearby archaeological sites
The Tenerife Cabildo is investing over €600,000 in promoting the race track
a project that has faced repeated delays and opposition
particularly regarding its impact on the region’s rich archaeological and ethnographic heritage
Imastanen reported that the worksite perimeter is being fenced
and they have informed the island's heritage department about the situation
following legal permits to analyse the area
including 17 ethnographic and 3 architectural sites
These findings were communicated to the Canary Islands government and the heritage department of the Cabildo
While Imastanen hopes that the authorities will protect these important heritage sites
they fear irreversible consequences if the work continues unchecked
questioning the fate of the archaeological artefacts that have already been removed from their original location
significantly diminishes their value and hinders further study
Imastanen emphasised that many of these artefacts
hold immense cultural significance when studied in situ
which often have religious or territorial meanings
The group stressed the need for ongoing study to uncover insights into the beliefs and lifestyles of the island’s ancient inhabitants
which includes levelling land and building new infrastructure
has drawn sharp criticism from those who see it as incompatible with efforts to protect Tenerife's natural and cultural heritage
Imastanen argues that fragile archaeological sites cannot coexist with the modern infrastructure required for a high-speed track
warning of the permanent loss of historical and cultural significance
Imastanen pledges to closely monitor the situation
warning of the clear conflict between preserving Tenerife's heritage and the development plans pushed by local authorities
The south of Tenerife is set to see a significant expansion in social housing
with 400 new affordable homes planned across its most populated municipalities
Half of these residences will be built in San Miguel de Abona
following the transfer of two plots of land in Amarilla Golf and Llano del Camello
only 11 homes are currently under construction in Granadilla de Abona
The Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI)
part of the regional government's Department of Public Works
had initially started the process for constructing 199 social housing units in the area
This figure has now doubled after ICAVI confirmed its acceptance of the development plan and the free transfer of two new plots in San Miguel de Abona
stated that approximately 200 new homes will be built in these two areas as part of the Canary Islands Housing Plan
The project is intended exclusively for rental purposes to help more families access affordable housing
Municipal authorities expect the development phase to be completed this year
A key aspect of the land transfer is that in accordance with housing legislation
residents registered in San Miguel de Abona will be given priority when applying for these public housing units
and in between Calle Mencey de Güímar and Avenida Lucio Díaz Flores Feo in Llano de Camello
described the land transfer as a "crucial opportunity" to address the increasing demand for housing in southern Tenerife
we are taking a decisive step in tackling the housing emergency affecting many residents of the Canary Islands
ensuring access to dignified and affordable homes," he stated
The Canary Islands Housing Plan also includes 11 public housing units currently under construction in La Jurada
The project was fast-tracked under an emergency procedure
which is the second most populated in southern Tenerife after Arona
ICAVI has approved the contract award for the design and construction of 59 additional public housing units
These will be distributed across two locations: 47 homes in Cho Portada and 12 in Poncela
These developments will include essential infrastructure such as electrical installations
The Public Works Department of the Canary Islands Government is also advancing projects funded by the European Union’s Next Generation initiative
ICAVI has already awarded contracts for the design of an additional 60 homes in Arona
is emerging as a pressing issue in Tenerife
has highlighted the growing prevalence of people living in vehicles
due to the severe lack of affordable residential rental housing
According to Cáritas’ report on Extreme Residential Exclusion in Tenerife
the number of women experiencing homelessness has risen sharply
now accounting for 27.6% of the homeless population in 2023
This trend is especially concerning as women face increased risks of physical and sexual violence and often lack access to basic hygiene facilities
with 36.1% of homeless people being between 18 and 45 years old
who become homeless after aging out of youth care centres
but there is also a growing number of workers in the hospitality sector
are also unable to secure housing despite having jobs
Cáritas reports that many people move to the south of Tenerife for work
only to find that housing costs are prohibitively high
saw a staggering 40% hike in rental prices in 2023
which now account for 37% of tourist accommodations on the island
and Granadilla de Abona rank among the areas with the highest concentrations of poverty
with nearly half of the 2,308 homeless people assisted by Cáritas having been homeless for over a year
The report notes that 1,319 of the homeless individuals assisted were Spanish nationals
while the rest included people from Morocco
not all homeless individuals struggle with mental illness
Many are workers or families with incomes that are insufficient to secure stable housing
Cáritas has criticised the lack of government action
citing decades of neglect in public housing policy since the 1990s
coordinator of Cáritas’ Housing and Inclusion Unit
emphasises that homelessness requires a comprehensive approach
She calls for greater collaboration between public institutions and non-profit organisations to tackle this multifaceted issue
“People aren’t homeless by choice,” Castro states
such as insufficient income and increasing rents
It’s not just about housing; it’s about ensuring these individuals have the means and opportunities to rebuild their lives.”
The report highlights the urgent need for systemic reforms
including investment in public housing and regulation of the rental market
As Cáritas continues its work on the ground
it calls for coordinated efforts from all sectors to address the root causes of homelessness and ensure a future where employment does not fail to guarantee shelter
Tenerife's homelessness crisis is a stark reminder of the growing inequalities in a region celebrated for its tourism but struggling to ensure basic living conditions for its residents
The protests held in the Canary Islands on Sunday
against the region's current tourism model have sparked varied reactions from several southern municipalities in Tenerife
who are concerned that the actions of a few people have projected a negative image of the island and caused worry for visitors
Amid growing concerns about sustainability and the fair distribution of wealth
local governments are voicing different perspectives
ranging from the need to adjust the current model to opposing the vilification of the industry that serves as the primary income source for the archipelago and the south of the island
expressed concerns about the negative image that recent protests and media coverage may have projected about the tourism sector
we must take care of it and not undervalue it,” González said
referring to the economic dependency that the region has on tourism
Granadilla de Abona has emerged as the most vocal southern municipality advocating for a shift in the tourism model
spokesperson for the local socialist group
emphasised the importance of transitioning to a more sustainable system that ensures a fairer distribution of wealth and improves the living conditions for residents
“It’s time to lift the archipelago out of the bottom ranks in terms of wages and inequality,” Santos stated
The municipality of Granadilla de Abona previously clashed with the Canary Islands Government and the Tenerife Cabildo over the development of the La Tejita hotel
Mayor Jennifer Miranda did not attend a meeting called by regional president Fernando Clavijo to discuss tourism projects in the island’s south post-October 20 protests
She accused the administrations of using “political cosmetics” to divert attention from underlying issues
Deputy Mayor and Tourism Councillor Dácil León cautioned against narratives that may demonise tourism
“Our economy and the present and future well-being of this archipelago depend on it,” León stressed
She advocated for a constructive debate aimed at fine-tuning the existing model rather than condemning it
highlighting the importance of tourism for the local economy
the southern municipalities of Tenerife are grappling with finding a balance between sustaining the economic benefits of tourism and addressing concerns around sustainability
and the equitable distribution of wealth generated by the industry
A warning has been issued to beachgoers by the Granadilla de Abona Council following the detection of several specimens of the venomous 'blue dragon' at El Médano and Leocadio Machado beaches
carries toxins that can cause severe skin irritation and allergic reactions upon contact
In an official statement shared via social media
the council announced the raising of a purple flag
which signals the presence of harmful marine wildlife
alongside the existing yellow flag already in place
This decision is aimed at alerting the public to the potential danger posed by the blue dragon
The council advises the public to avoid entering the water and to follow all instructions provided by local authorities
Officials have assured that updates will be provided
and beach access will be deemed safe again once the threat subsides
The "blue dragon" refers to Glaucus atlanticus
a small but visually striking species of marine mollusc commonly known as a type of sea slug
it is venomous and can pose a danger to humans
Here are some key details about the blue dragon:
Appearance: It has an eye-catching blue and silver body with delicate wing-like appendages
Venom: The blue dragon doesn't produce its own venom
it feeds on venomous creatures like the Portuguese man of war (a jellyfish-like organism) and stores the venom in its own body
specifically in the tips of its cerata (finger-like appendages)
which is often more concentrated than the original source
Effects on Humans: Contact with a blue dragon can cause painful skin irritation
and sometimes more severe allergic reactions
depending on the individual’s sensitivity to the venom
Habitat: These creatures are typically found floating on the ocean’s surface in warm and temperate waters
They use the ocean currents and wind to move around
While they are more common in certain parts of the world
the blue dragon is best appreciated from a distance due to its ability to cause harm if handled
frustrating taxi queues at Tenerife South Airport have sparked outrage among tourists and residents
to express his deep dissatisfaction with the “unsustainable image” the situation presents for one of Spain’s top holiday destinations
Marichal criticised the inefficiency of the system
noting that taxis delivering passengers to the departures terminal are forced to return empty because they lack a municipal license from Granadilla de Abona
despite hundreds of people waiting for taxis at the arrival’s terminal
creates a glaring mismatch between demand and availability
Marichal highlighted that this problem is not new
emphasizing that it has persisted for years
taxis drop off passengers and return empty simply because of licencing restrictions,” he stated
Ashotel urged Tenerife’s local government to declare the airport a "sensitive zone" to prioritise finding an immediate solution to these recurring taxi shortages
The hotel association has suggested adopting practices from major hubs like Madrid Barajas Airport
where a joint service area allows taxis from 54 municipalities to operate
Ashotel believes Tenerife South could benefit from similar measures to streamline services and alleviate congestion
Marichal also raised concerns about the environmental impact of the current system
Forcing taxis to travel empty in one direction contradicts European goals for decarbonisation
“Transporting passengers in just one direction wastes resources
and doubles traffic when a single trip would suffice,” he explained
1. Broadening Taxi Licenses: Allow taxis from outside Granadilla de Abona to pick up passengers at the airport
removing the exclusivity tied to municipal licensing
2. Flow Coordination: Introduce a "taxi flow coordinator" to monitor and manage demand in real-time
activating additional taxis from other regions when necessary
3. Efficiency Indicators: Establish measurable indicators to guide decisions on expanding service areas and adjusting supply to meet demand
Marichal reminded authorities that Tenerife South Airport
is a public facility funded by all taxpayers
He urged authorities to take immediate action to enhance efficiency
and improve the experience for all passengers
As Tenerife faces mounting mobility challenges
resolving the taxi crisis at its main airport has become a crucial test of local governance and infrastructure management
the island risks damaging its reputation as a leading tourist destination
The Tenerife Cabildo has stated that progress is being made toward resolving issues affecting taxi services at Tenerife South Airport
This comes in response to criticism from Ashotel
the island’s hotel and hospitality association
which has called for the airport to be declared a “sensitive area” to address the long queues for taxis
The low operational efficiency of Tenerife South Airport is because only taxis from Granadilla de Abona
are allowed to collect people from the airport
All other taxis are allowed to drop people off but not pick up new fares
the Cabildo’s Councillor for Mobility
explained that the government’s proposal involves allowing taxis from other municipalities to operate at the airport during peak times as the operators from Granadilla can’t cope
García acknowledged there is resistance to the proposal from the Granadilla de Abona Council and the local taxi cooperative
who say there will be a negative effect on the taxi drivers
the Mobility Department commissioned a comprehensive study to analyse tourist influx patterns and transportation demands at the airport
will form a critical first step toward declaring Tenerife South Airport a sensitive area
a move designed to streamline taxi operations and reduce passenger waiting times
Ashotel President Jorge Marichal remains sceptical
he stressed that the situation has been going on unresolved for far too long
The issue has also drawn criticism from hoteliers who described the lengthy queues for taxis as “unacceptable.” They have highlighted the inconvenience faced by both tourists and residents
resulting in negative impact on the island’s reputation
The Councillor for Mobility echoed this sentiment while addressing another pressing concern: the prolonged waits faced by non-EU passengers at customs checkpoints in Tenerife South Airport
García called for an urgent increase in human and technical resources to alleviate delays
“Border controls should not continue to be a source of complaints and frustration,” she said
Ashotel has similarly criticised the insufficient staffing and technological resources
which have led to queues spilling into airport taxiways at times
As Tenerife grapples with these challenges
the focus remains on implementing practical
long-term solutions to enhance the airport’s functionality and improve the experience for passengers
An 80-year-old man tragically died yesterday afternoon (Saturday) after being rescued from the water at La Tejita Beach in Granadilla de Abona
according to reports from the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES)
They received a call at 4:10pm reporting that the elderly swimmer had been pulled from the water unconscious
Lifeguards at the beach immediately began CPR until SUC medical personnel arrived
they assessed the situation and took over with advanced resuscitation techniques but unfortunately
The Guardia Civil and Local Police of Granadilla conducted the necessary investigations and assisted the emergency services at the scene
La Tejita Beach is one of the largest natural beaches in Tenerife
known for its stretch of golden sand and crystal-clear waters
this serene beach is a popular destination for those seeking tranquillity away from the more crowded tourist areas
The beach is nestled next to the iconic Montaña Roja
a striking red volcano that provides a dramatic backdrop and a unique landscape for hiking enthusiasts
offering a designated area where they can enjoy the beach freely
The emergency services still warn about observing yellow or red flags accordingly and taking maximum precautions as the currents can be deceptive
The south of Tenerife has experienced unprecedented demographic growth since the year 2000
one of the highest in both the Canary Islands and Spain as a whole
according to the National Statistics Institute (INE)
who state that the region's population growth rate stands out remarkably
The INE's data is striking: the five most populated municipalities in the south - Arona
and Guía de Isora - have collectively seen their populations grow 2.5 times since the turn of the century
an increase of 140,530 (+148%) and don’t include the numbers of tourists who visit the region
Arona: Increased from 38,416 residents to 85,249
Granadilla de Abona: Grew from 20,323 to 54,942
San Miguel de Abona: Expanded from 7,315 to 22,606
Guía de Isora: Increased from 14,674 to 22,301
The primary reason for this demographic boom is the tourism sector
which has steadily grown over the past four decades
This growth has attracted both local and foreign workers
leading to significant strains on infrastructure
The housing issue has worsened recently due to the limited development of public housing and the surge in holiday homes
particularly in residential areas near the main tourist areas
where unions have warned of a potential "tourism collapse" due to workers struggling to find affordable housing
the job opportunities in South Tenerife make it an attractive destination for young people from European countries
Before Brexit more Brits than anyone else were moving to the island
this influx of ‘young immigrants’ has also had a positive side effect: it has helped to slow the aging of the population
a significant concern in other parts of the island
the region faces the dual challenge of maintaining its appeal as a tourist destination while addressing the infrastructural and social needs of its rapidly increasing population
The Granadilla de Abona Council has published a statement on social media informing the population that the signs
and the tape sealing off the area that appeared on the beach of El Médano this morning (Saturday) are fake
and analyses show that the water quality is perfectly suitable for swimming
The person or people responsible for putting up these false notifications are unknown
but they have alarmed residents and holidaymakers asi t states that the beach is closed to the public and swimming is prohibited due to the presence of Monofaecal bacteria
Both were immediately removed and the beach was open as usual
The authorities are looking for the people responsible for these actions
The Guardia Civil have carried out a surprise raid on several Cannabis Clubs in the south of Tenerife
resulting in the arrest of five people suspected of selling drugs illegally outside the regulations of their ‘Smoking Assocations’
along with the confiscated substances and related case files
have been placed at the disposal of the Granadilla de Abona Magistrate’s Court
Undercover Investigation Exposes Illegal Drug Sales
was led by officers from the Playa de las Americas division of the Guardia Civil
with the objective of cracking down on cannabis clubs allegedly being used as fronts for the illegal sale of marijuana and hashish
They launched the investigation in 2024 after identifying a number of establishments operating under the guise of legal cannabis associations but suspected of engaging in illicit drug distribution
investigators gathered sufficient evidence to carry out coordinated raids on three such establishments
The operation was supported by officers from the Granadilla de Abona Local Police and the Canary Islands General Police Corps
the leader of one of the targeted associations had already been arrested for similar offences in 2022 but had continued with the same illegal activities
This latest police action emphasizes the authorities’ ongoing commitment to dismantling networks that exploit the legal framework surrounding cannabis associations to facilitate drug trafficking in the Canary Islands
A victory for Barça Women in the Estadi Johan Cruyff after Granadilla Tenerife had taken the lead in their league game in Barcelona
a brace from Jenni Hermoso and a goal from Alexia turned things around in the first half and then after the break a goal from Martens and two from Bruna made the final score 6-1 to the blaugranes
The blaugranes had the first chance of the game with Graham Hansen testing Tenerife keeper Aline
In the visitors' first attack of note they took the lead with Pisco scoring with just eight minute gone
lasted barely five minutes with Jenni Hermoso levelling things up on 13 minutes
A great save from Sandra Paños prevented the away side from regaining the lead before Hermoso struck again to put Barça ahead
A penalty from Alexia just before the half hour mark made it 3-1 at half time
In the second half Alexia's shot came back off the post and Martens reacted first to stretch the home side's lead on 71 minutes
Coach Cortés made changes and one of the players coming on had an almost immediate effect
Second half sub Bruna score twice in six minutes to seal a commanding win ahead of Sunday's trip to France to take on PSG in the first leg of their Champions League semi final
In their last encounter, Real Madrid came out victorious but with great problems caused by Granadilla
Las Blancas finally managed to get the lead for the third and final time and Toletti’s header was the winner of the match

taxi associations from Granadilla de Abona and San Miguel
along with the Taxi Federation of the Canary Islands (Fedetax)
have successfully proposed a solution to alleviate taxi queues at Tenerife South Airport during peak hours
The Cabildo has warmly accepted this proposal
marking a positive step towards improving public service in the area
The proposal allows taxi services from municipalities other than Granadilla de Abona and San Miguel
to pick up passengers at Tenerife South Airport during peak hours when the demand exceeds the number of taxis available at the ranks at the airport
presented their sensible proposal to address the challenges faced by taxi operators at the airport to the representatives of the municipalities involved
expressed gratitude towards the taxi associations for their willingness to collaborate and highlighted the importance of declaring the area around the airport as a sensitive zone
She emphasized the need for urgently establishing a special regulation to guarantee the livelihoods of taxi-dependent families in Granadilla and San Miguel while preventing the long queues of tourists and visitors at the airport
the Cabildo will demand that AENA regularly updates information to meet the taxi demand effectively
Juan Artiles from Fedetax explained that taxis from other municipalities would be permitted to pick up passengers under exceptional circumstances
with a designated stand supervisor coordinating these trips
He emphasized the positive nature of the solution and the unanimous consensus reached during the meeting
noting that it aims to prevent future issues and misunderstandings
the parties involved believe that this agreement
coupled with the upcoming emergency regulations
will ensure a smooth and efficient taxi service at Tenerife South Airport without compromising the livelihoods of taxi operators in Granadilla and San Miguel

The Playa de las Americas Unit of the Guardia Civil are investigating two people
aged 22 and 26 years old who are residents of Granadilla de Abona in the south of Tenerife
They are suspected of committing a crime involving a scam amounting to €4,480 and another related to money laundering
The accused allegedly carried out the scam by sending fraudulent SMS messages to people’s mobile phones
posing as a banking institution through a link
Victims were deceived into entering their banking credentials through the link
enabling the fraudsters to make unauthorized charges on their credit cards
These charges included purchases at various establishments and transfers via BIZUM
Upon receiving reports of the alleged scam from the victims' complaints at police stations
they gathered sufficient evidence to identify and investigate the accused
The suspects were found to be benefiting from the reported transfers
which were received in their bank accounts from the accounts of the victims without their consent
The accused individuals were essentially acting as "money mules."
The proceedings related to this case have been submitted to the Court of Instruction No
3 in Granadilla de Abona for further legal action
The Police authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and cautious regarding unsolicited messages or requests for personal information
especially those appearing to be from financial institutions and to report any suspicious activity immediately
The mayors of Granadilla de Abona and Arico in the south of Tenerife have issued statements to residents and holidaymakers warning of ‘unidentified’ waste along the coast and on the beaches in the municipalities
and the other advising against it until it is known if it is harmful to humans
The ‘deposits’ have generated concern in both councils hence the precautionary measures to guarantee the health of bathers
Mayor Jennifer Miranda announced that bathing is banned along the municipal coastline
This decision is based on the presence of a deposit in the sea that has moved from the neighbouring municipality of Arico towards Granadilla beaches
The measure will remain in force until the analysis results of the samples taken yesterday (August 8th) are obtained
so that they can determine exactly what they are and if they are a danger to health
Although it is suspected that the deposit is a natural phenomenon that affects other areas of the island
the authorities have opted for caution and have raised the red flag as a warning sign along the coast
Miranda stressed that the safety and well-being of citizens and visitors are her priority and that they will remain vigilant in the face of any change in the situation
Once the results have been received a decision will be made accordingly about the use of the beaches
The Arico Council issued a ‘preventive recommendation’ to avoid bathing on the coast due to the presence of microalgae at various points on the coastline
Although this phenomenon is not unusual in the region
the authorities have decided to issue a warning to bathers to avoid unnecessary risks
identifiable by abnormal changes in the colour of the water
have been detected in several coastal areas
which led Mayor Olivia Delgado to advise against bathing in those affected areas
The mayoress emphasized that some samples have been taken today on different beaches in the municipality for analysis
with the aim of confirming the presence of microalgae and ruling out risks to public health
The council will continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates on the state of the beaches as new information becomes available

This weekend 247 people were rescued in small boats crossing the Canary route of migration from Africa
108 people were spotted about nine miles off Punta de Rasca and were intercepted by Maritime Rescue who escorted them to the port of Los Cristianos
Eight of them were taken to health centres for various pathologies
according to the report from the emergency services
This figure was added to yesterday (Sunday) by the fifty or so people
on board a makeshift boat sighted by the crew of the fishing boat Rosa del Viento
five miles off the coast of Los Abrigos in Granadilla de Abona
was sent to meet them and located it an hour later and also brought it to the port of Los Cristianos
a Maritime Rescue vessel rescued 36 migrants of Maghreb origin
who were travelling on a raft located 35 miles from Lanzarote
The Calíope rescue boat was responsible for taking them to the port of Arrecife
But the first vessel rescued by Maritime Rescue this weekend was the one located on Saturday in waters near El Hierro
medical personnel were waiting for them two women needed urgent treatment and were taken to a hospital
Survivors on this boat reported that they had thrown several corpses into the sea during their journey
The south of Tenerife is officially getting older
as the number of inhabitants over 65 years of age in the region has accelerated in the last decade
According to the latest update of the Canarian Institute of Statistics (ISTAC)
with data as of January 2020 (just before the pandemic)
the aging of the population is more pronounced in the municipalities with less population
Eight municipalities have seen the segment of residents increase from the age that currently marks the border of retirement
and in one it is perceived in a more pronounced way
Ten years ago Santiago del Teide led the ranking of municipalities with the ‘elderly’ as a percentage of their population
but now they have 18.2% compared to Arafo (18%)
Güímar (17.2%) and Candelaria (15.9%)
whereas Fasnia and Vilaflor have 23.7% and 21.9% respectively
the municipalities with the least weight of the older population are Arona (12.2%)
Granadilla de Abona (10.4%) and Adeje (10.3%)
The average for the island of Tenerife stands at 16.53%
who consider the percentage of people over 65 years of age above 10% in the municipal register to be "respectable"
highlight the close relationship between economic and demographic dynamics
in that sense they link the weight of tourism with migratory attractiveness that represent zones like the south of the Island
they emphasize that tourist municipalities such as Adeje
Santiago del Teide or Granadilla de Abona maintain a relatively young average age
largely due to the arrival of people for jobs that are of the age to form couples and families
This circumstance causes the base of the population pyramid to increase
contrary to what happens in places where there is no job attraction
which results in an aging of its inhabitants at a greater speed
four municipalities in the north of the island command the classification of municipalities with the highest number of elderly residents
Los Silos (24.9%) and Puerto de la Cruz (25.2%)
from the Tenerife town with less aging population
THE NUMBER OF MIDDLE AGED GROWS TOO:In the last 10 years
only Santiago del Teide has seen the average age of its inhabitants decline
according to the latest measurement collected by the Canaries Institute of Statistics
The rest of the municipalities have seen an increase in numbers
Six areas exceed the Tenerife average age which is set at 42.3 years old
Santiago del Teide (42.8) and Güímar (42.6) are also close
On the other side are the municipalities below the insular average: Candelaria (41.8)
San Miguel de Abona (38.4) and Granadilla de Abona (38.3)
Candelaria heads the list of municipalities that have accelerated the aging process of their inhabitants in the last decade (3.7 years older than in 2010)
The Guardia Civil have arrested five men in Granadilla de Abona in the south of Tenerife
and the crime of usurpation of marital status
The investigation began at the beginning of this year when the Guardia Civil became aware through a denuncia filed by the victim
who is the owner of a company located in San Isidro that deals in second-hand cars
His denuncia claimed that several crimes of ‘robbery with force’ had been committed
because the accused broke into his warehouse
where the aforementioned company is located
and stole a total of 16 second-hand and high-end vehicles
officers started an investigation with a visual inspection of the warehouse
they discovered that two men had threatened and coerced one of the company's workers to open the premises for them
claiming there was a debt between the complainant and the detainees
The Guardia Civil also found out that other similar thefts had happened at a second warehouse owned by the complainant
where another four vehicles had been stolen
Guardia Civil recovered five vehicles valued at approximately 50,000 euros
The proceedings have been handed over to the Court of Granadilla de Abona
the Adeje City Council ordered the eviction and removal of almost a hundred people who were settled in caves
which is a stone’s throw from tourist resorts in La Caleta
homeless charity Cáritas has sounded the alarm
recognizing that among these people there were thirty in a vulnerable situation
It is one more situation contributing to the increase in homelessness that has been growing in the south Tenerife
In their last report at the beginning of the year
Cáritas had 1,800 homeless people registered on the island
but according to José Antonio Díez
coordinator of the Cáritas Mobile Street Care Unit (UMAC)
"in the next study that will be presented in June
we will see a considerable increase in these areas."
Díez explains that the UMAC is dedicated to caring for homeless people
and especially in substandard housing that is falling apart
"They are usually sleeping in public spaces but some reach agreements with owners of abandoned buildings to survive," he says
“although most of these offer limited shelter
and in most cases are dangerous to stay in.”
People's perception is that these homeless are middle-aged with drink or drug problems
Díez says "we see people of all ages
although in the vast majority of cases they are single people.”
Caritas claim that the number of places offered in shelters and centres for the homeless
don’t cover even half of what is required
the problem is that we ask the person to leave their support or security network
and move to another municipality and start from scratch again
having to register to receive resources from Social Services
“but there is a serious problem of access to housing and the administrations do not collaborate as much as they should,” they said
"We are in negotiations with many municipalities to create day centres
but these people also need to enter the rental market and what happens is that those who
have a minimum pension of around 400 euros
don't have enough money to rent and prefer to live on the street
Cáritas is in talks with the municipalities of Adeje
which are ‘the most representative in the increase in demand’
Of the 1,800 homeless registered in the last report
the vast majority are still in the metropolitan area
Arona and Adeje the increase in homelessness has been very significant
The majority of these are from abroad or from mainland Spain who by not having a support network here
there are also Canarian families who prefer to live in substandard housing rather than move to another municipality
The Granadilla Council have confirmed the reopening of El Médano Beach (central beach) and Leocadio Machado Beach after the counter-analysis results confirmed that the water quality is suitable again for swimming
The levels of enterococci bacteria were found to be below the permitted limits in both coastal areas
The municipal administration has stated that only these two bathing areas exceeded the allowable levels for swimming
which led to a temporary swimming ban and the raising of the red flag on Wednesday
This precautionary measure was taken to ensure the safety of bathers while awaiting the results of samples collected on Wednesday
and yesterday afternoon's confirmation of good water quality
The local council also wants to emphasize that Granadilla de Abona is one of the few municipalities in the Canary Islands that conducts water quality analyses twice a week
with samples collected from a total of 10 beaches
This comprehensive testing ensures a thorough understanding of coastal water quality
The beaches included in this service are: Cuevas del Trigo
Abandoned vehicles dumped at the side of the road or in parking spaces in the South of Tenerife
is an old problem that continues to get worse over time
it is increasingly worrying the local councils of the region
which carry out constant campaigns to remove them from public and private spaces
as they represent a security problem and eliminate parking spaces
as well as making the landscape ugly as they deteriorate
One of the most affected areas where this problem is clearly seen is the Las Chafiras industrial estate in San Miguel de Abona
where there are more than 200 abandoned cars
and there are another fifty waiting to be taken away in Guargacho
The Councillor for Security and Traffic in San Miguel de Abona
said: “We have detected that in the places close to garages and repair shops the problem is aggravated
perhaps because they cannot pay for the repairs or they cannot get parts.”
Rodríguez went on to explain that: “the solution to getting the car removed is very simple but we need citizen collaboration
The owner just needs to go to the local police and fill out a form authorizing the removal of the vehicle at no cost"
If there is no response or claim for the vehicle after the established period
it is sent to an authorized treatment centre for its destruction
underlined the "significant advances" that have occurred in the last two years and recommended that citizens who want to get rid of a car notify the Council before disposing of it in a public space
which allows the municipality to save resources and time," he explained
says that an average of six vehicles are removed every day
“It is an easy process” she explained
“anyone can go to the local police station and request that a vehicle be removed completing the corresponding documentation”
if the car has not been removed by its owner
it will be declared as ‘urban solid waste’ and will be removed
before sending it to a treatment centre for subsequent destruction and decontamination
classed as being between Candelaria on the east coast and Santiago del Teide on the west
is experiencing a housing crisis as never seen before
as residential properties available for rent dwindle leaving locals grappling with exorbitant prices
highlighting a scarcity of properties available in the area
with the real concern lying in the elevated rental costs
Major banks advise that rent payments should not exceed 30% of net monthly income
an average resident's salary would need to be almost €3,000 per month
The southern region seems to be turning into a haven for holiday homes rather than a feasible place for residents to live
A search for rentals below €700 per month yields limited but available options on Idealista and Fotocasa
This implies that a minimum net monthly income of around €2,100 is required to afford such an apartment
Properties such as an 85m2 apartment with two bedrooms and amenities like a lift and garage in Tamaimo
or a 44m2 fifth-floor apartment with lift access in Puerto Santiago
The affordability extends to La Caleta de Güímar and Las Galletas
while options in Granadilla de Abona and Arico are available for a slightly higher rent of €750
A significant contributing factor to this housing challenge is the notable increase in rental prices between 2016 and December 2023
as indicated in a new study from the real estate portal Indominio
The cost per square metre has more than doubled in many areas
and Adeje experiencing staggering growth rates
is an exception with a stable average of €3.06 per square metre
The popular tourist destinations of Playa de las Americas
and Costa Adeje top the list as the most expensive places to live
with an average monthly rent of €1,552
and €1,372 for a 70m2 residential property respectively
and Guargacho de San Miguel de Abona also command relatively high rents
ranging from €743 to €837 per month for similar properties
rental prices in the southern region have more than doubled
with a particularly notable surge in the last year
Granadilla de Abona witnessed a 33.75% increase
the average monthly rents stand at €893
signalling the need for salaries above €2,700 per month to keep pace with soaring living costs
alongside the mayor of Granadilla de Abona and the director of the Tenerife Sur airport
opened the newly renovated Tourist Information Office at Tenerife South airport yesterday (Monday)
which has been modernised to make a more open
accessible and digitized space for visitors to the island
Pedro Martín explained that this office is part of the renovation plan of all tourist information offices on the island
"We are doing a complete renovation of all the offices in Tenerife because we need to offer a more modern
and improve service at our airports."
highlighted the importance of "having a first-rate office in one of the most important tourist destinations in the world" and said that they will also renovate the tourist information office in El Médano
was also there and explained that the objective is to create an information network that shares common design criteria
and updated and innovative content to standardize the image of Tenerife
promote tourist mobility within the island
and continue promoting the competitiveness of the destination
the Cabildo approved a budget of two million euros for the renovation and improvement of tourist information offices on the island
The office at Tenerife South airport had a total investment of 251,381 euros of which 73% was financed by the Canary Islands Government and 27% by the Cabildo
Similar works will soon be carried out in other tourist offices in Vilaflor
The Guardia Civil has apprehended five individuals suspected of committing 49 robberies in various public establishments on the island of Tenerife
They are now facing charges related to their involvement in a criminal gang and offences of property damage
started in June following reports of alleged thefts in several businesses
revealing a pattern of systematic criminal activity
The suspects used large sledgehammers to gain access to the premises by breaking through entrance doors and subsequently raiding slot machines to steal the collected cash
they concealed their identities with balaclavas
regularly changing vehicles to hinder police investigations
The crimes occurred in 14 localities across Tenerife
with the majority concentrated in the southern part of the island
illustrating the high mobility of the criminals
Three residential searches were conducted in San Isidro (Granadilla de Abona)
and Barrio de la Alegría (Santa Cruz)
sports clothing with security devices and labels from a well-known sports chain were found
along with the tools and clothing used by the suspects during the commission of the crimes
The Guardia Civil says they have successfully resolved a total of 49 robbery cases
involving approximately €60,000 in stolen cash from slot machines
and estimated damages reaching €80,000 due to the violence employed during the offences
The operation was conducted by the Guía de Isora Investigation Area
with the collaboration of agents from the Playa de las Americas station
the Territorial Judicial Police Team of Puerto de la Cruz
and the Citizen Security Unit (USECIC) of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Command
It was overseen by the Instruction Court No
which ordered the remand without bail of two of the detainees
while the remaining three were released pending charges
ALDI continues to make progress with its expansion plan in the Canary Islands
and yesterday opened its first new store in the south of Tenerife
in Las Chafiras in the municipality of San Miguel de Abona
Having opened its first four supermarkets in July
the next one is now open on Calle de La Folía
This is the fifth store that ALDI has opened in the Canary Islands and the third one in Tenerife
The new ALDI store will be open from 8:00am to 10:00pm to offer the residents of San Miguel de Abona
a new convenient and simple shopping option
with quality products at the lowest price possible
has a commercial area of more than 1,300 m2 and a car park with 120 spaces
including four with recharging points for electric vehicles
Within the framework of ALDI's commitment to energy efficiency and respect for the environment
the new supermarket has solar panels that allow 97% of the energy generated to be used by the store itself
and has been equipped with LED lighting and backup systems to avoid product losses due to breakdowns
and to improve the operation of lighting and air conditioning within the government's new guidelines
The facilities also use CO2 as refrigerant gas
which is a more sustainable and efficient alternative to other options available on the market
During the opening of the Las Chafiras store
ALDI's Expansion Manager in the Canary Islands
highlighted the generation of local employment as one of the pillars of ALDI's presence in the Canary Islands
"the 25 male and female staff members that make up the team at this store are from the municipality of San Miguel de Abona and other neighbouring municipalities because our will is also to generate local economic growth wherever we have a presence," he said
The inauguration was attended by the mayor of San Miguel de Abona
who values that “the municipality has once again been chosen by a large supermarket chain that can give more choice to neighbours to find quality products at competitive prices"
as well as "the creation of employment" directly and indirectly in a municipality that continues to have one of the lowest unemployment levels on the island
In September they will open another store in the South of Tenerife
this time in San Isidro in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona
which has changed its opening date to September 14th
TITSA unveiled changes to the schedules and routes of several bus lines in the south of Tenerife this week

It is pretended to build a self-sufficient house integrated into the landscape of the island characterized by a continuous terracing of its abrupt topography. This is the germ of project: a basalt stone wall on which a light structure of plywood with galvanized steel walls and glass supports advancing southwards.
Is generated as well an area connected to the outside (the day area ) relationship space that dominates the landscape and is protected from sun and wind. After the wall is located the sleeping area to the north formed of small intimate venues to which is provided with high thermal inertia.
Courtesy of Estudio José Luis RodríguezThis duality is expressed in conceptual spatial material and construction: dematerialization and the absence of limits of the living area (space relationship between users and between them and the landscape) against the austere interior containment for shady sleeping area (areas of privacy).
Courtesy of Estudio José Luis RodríguezThe house designed in 1995 also aims to reduce its ecological footprint on the use of materials and construction systems so using local materials (basalt wall insulation covered with volcanic lapilli etc..) certified industrial materials environmentally (specifically the wood) and no harmful elements (PVC VOC compounds synthetic paints and varnishes etc).
Courtesy of Estudio José Luis RodríguezThe inclination of the structure of the day area is determined by the solar radiation and it integrates the panels to produce electricity and hot water seeking a result of ZERO CO2 EMISSIONS .
