Under the challenge of providing the home with spacious and comfortable spaces
bringing light to the areas located at the end of the plot and achieving the necessary privacy for the parts of the program that the client required
the project is based on a central courtyard and the communications core to organize the home
The program of the house developed by Bernardo Cerrato places the day area on the second floor and the private areas of the house on the first floor
organizing the distribution of the interior spaces by use based on the hours of natural light and the required privacy
The central patio and the communications core of the house are used as natural catalysts of comfort
passively achieving benefits in the energy performance of the house and relying on these two elements as a source of lighting
radiation and natural ventilation for the interior spaces
House in Guardamar del Segura by Bernardo Cerrato
Project description by Bernardo Cerrato
The main problem with the plot is that it only has a narrow façade in relation to its depth: approximately 5 x 19 metres
the different heights of the adjoining buildings made it obligatory to carry out a meticulous study of the resulting volume in order to introduce natural light and try to achieve natural ventilation in all the main rooms of the dwelling
Starting from a central courtyard as a key element that configures the entire house and the exact position of the vertical communication element
we managed to solve to a large extent the challenge we were facing: to provide the house with spacious and comfortable rooms
to allow light to reach the areas located at the end of the plot and to achieve the necessary privacy for the parts of the programme that the client required
the floor plan is stratified by uses according to the hours of natural light that penetrates the dwelling and the privacy required
resulting in an inversion of the programme that is commonly found on each level: on the first floor are the bedrooms and the more private rooms
Following basic principles of thermodynamics
we achieve passive benefits in the energy performance of the house: we rely on this courtyard to use it as a source of lighting and radiation for the day area

A man and a woman, a married couple aged 87 and 85 respectively, died this 25 July on the Centro beach in Guardamar del Segura (Alicante). The man suffered a heart attack in the water and the woman who went to his rescue also went into cardiorespiratory arrest, Guardia Civil sources have confirmed to Europa Press.
The incident happened this Thursday morning, at around 10.20am, when the man apparently suffered a heart attack and was spotted floating in the sea. His wife, on seeing him, rushed to his aid but as a result she also went into cardiorespiratory arrest.
After 40 minutes of resuscitation, a Guardia Civil patrol from Guardamar del Segura, who had arrived at the scene, reported the death of both victims.

The Generalitat has begun the removal of thousands of dead pine trees from the historic Guardamar pine forest
which spans nearly 600 hectares from La Marina de Elche to northern Torrevieja
originally planted a century ago to combat advancing dunes
has been severely affected by extreme drought and a pine tree plague
with 30–40% of its trees now irreversibly dried out
according to the environmental group Friends of the Wetlands of Southern Alicante (AHSA)
Forest personnel have started felling dried-out trees on the southern slopes of Moncayo
between the old forest house near the Los Montesinos road roundabout and the pedestrian walkway along the N-332
Heavy-duty machinery is being used to uproot and crush smaller trees
The result is a stark and desolate landscape
The most affected areas are those most exposed to strong westerly winds and intense sunlight
trees located in dune depressions or along the coastal edge
which operates a nursery and facilities in Guardamar
has not yet specified the extent of the logging efforts or what reforestation plans will follow
experts suggest that pine trees may no longer be a viable option for replanting
the regional government allocated €700,000 in emergency funds to combat the pine plague across the Valencian Community
along with the Andalusian and Murcian regional governments
has also sought European funding to expand intervention efforts
studies conducted in 2017 and 2019 already warned that 27% of the Guardamar pine forest was dead
funded by the Generalitat with European aid
was launched in 2020 to remove dead trees and replant the area with 95,000 new pines
environmental groups claim that while many sick trees were removed
Unlike in 2020—when local residents and opposition parties strongly criticized the tree removal plan—the current intervention has seen little public backlash
as the sheer scale of tree mortality is now evident
A Changing Climate and an Uncertain Future
Experts warn that the historic environmental conditions that allowed pine trees to thrive in this region no longer exist
Climate change has led to higher temperatures and extreme drought
Historical records describe the dunes as having moist
even stagnant soils due to contributions from the Segura River
and that’s simply not going to happen.”
The same devastating pattern is unfolding elsewhere in Alicante
with thousands of dead pines in Sierra Escalona
and Sierra de Callosa—though not yet at the scale seen in Guardamar
the municipality of Guardamar del Segura has announced the removal of 150 dead trees from Reina Sofia Park
Mayor José Luis Sáez confirmed that replacement planting will focus on drought-resistant native species
With reforestation efforts still uncertain
one thing is clear: Guardamar’s historic pine forest will never be the same
La Roqueta beach in Guardamar del Segura has taken another life on Saturday
bringing the number of deaths to four at the same spot in just three days
On Saturday afternoon a 77-year-old man has died while bathing
according to sources from the Emergency Information and Coordination Centre (CICU)
with the emergency services receiving the notification at 3:30 p.m
The victim was pulled out of the water by other bathers who were on the beach
This is the same beach where 2 brave heroes
a 52-year-old Briton and a 46-year-old man from Poland
On Saturday afternoon paramedics carried out resuscitation manoeuvres on the bather but there has been no response
This is the fourth death on La Roqueta beach in just three days
lost their lives while trying to rescue two children
who were finally able to get out of the water
It is not known whether either of the two men who lost their lives had any relationship to the two children
Friday’s incident took place around midday
There was some initial confusion with early rumours suggesting that up to eight people had lost their lives in the incident
two men aged 39 and 22 and a woman aged around 20
the first of them with symptoms of drowning
All of them were part of a group of bathers who jumped into the water when they saw that the children were in in serious trouble

When he heard of the Friday drownings the Guardamar del Segura Mayor
brought the monthly Plenary meeting to a halt
He said: “We have now had three deaths from drowning in the last 24 hours at Guardamar’s beaches
The mayor confirmed that the lifeguard service and the rescue plan is not due to be put in place by the Guardamar council
there have now been nine drownings in Alicante Province within the first seven days of June
a 76-year-old Irishman drowned on Monday at Cala Capitan in Orihuela Costa
The other drowning victims include a Belgian pensioner and a Moldovan man
Two other bathers also passed away on Monday in Calpe and Elche
Another swimmer in La Vila Joiosa this Saturday morning had better luck as he was able to be rescued in time and although the 69-year-old man was unconscious he was stabilized by the emergency services on the Basseta de l’Oli beach in the historic capital of the Marina Baixa
La Roqueta beach is located in the southern tip of the Guardamar town centre and
like the rest of the municipality’s coastline
is still without a lifeguard and rescue service
On Saturday a maximum temperature of 25.9 degrees was recorded in Guardamar
which encouraged those who spent the day on the beach to get into the water
The wind had maximum gusts of 33 kilometres per hour
according to the Valencian Meteorological Association (Avamet)
A BRITISH man has died after reportedly drowning in a popular Spanish resort town
The man, 72, was pulled from the water unconscious in Guardamar del Segura, Costa Blanca
It is thought he may have had a medical issue before he drowned at around 3.30pm on Thursday
At the time of the incident, the weather was clear and the sea was calm
Lifeguards will continue to patrol the area
The local municipality has posted signs in English and Spanish on beaches to alert bathers about dangerous ocean currents
His body was pulled out of the sea near to the holiday resort of Magaluf with cops now launching an investigation into his death
A Civil Protection boat discovered his body before recovering it and taking it to Santa Ponsa Yacht Club on Tuesday.
The local Civil Guard was informed at around 4pm as they launched an immediate probe to identify the man.
according to well placed sources who also said he was British
It is still unclear if the man was a tourist in Spain or if he lived on the island
Officials believe he was most likely out by the Malgrats Islands - a set of two uninhabited islets opposite the Bay of Santa Ponsa - before his death
The Malgrats Islands Natural Reserve is regarded as a tourist friendly area to go snorkelling thanks to its clear waters
A number of hotels offer tours down to the islands with local guides putting on excursions to dive down and explore the cave system beneath the sea
Officials are yet to confirm his cause of death despite drowning being the most likely reason at this stage
They are still investigating if a previous health problem may have taken its toll before he got into difficulties
A police source said this afternoon: “The death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage.”
The Civil Guard has also announced they are reporting to a court in Palma ahead of the post-mortem

The work done in 2020 reveals an exhaustive analysis of an underneath Roman phase
improve the environmental surroundings and exhibit the archaeological remains
1.- Archaeological area of El Moncayo-Torre del Descargador
3.- Islamic tower superimposed on the Roman villa
6.- Work to enhance the area of La Torre del Descargador
The history of the ancient inhabitants of the lands of El Moncayo beach
on the coast of Guardamar del Segura in Alicante
is beginning to be drawn by a team of archaeologists who have been excavating since 2018
and about three kilometres south of the centre of the current town
the past begins to write new lines with the discovery of an archaeological settlement made up of two clearly related sites
with a wide sequence of occupation between the 2nd and 11th centuries AD; and
an exempt structure from the 10th and 11th centuries
barely 135 metres away from the settlement and whose function could have been twofold: storage and surveillance
the excavations in 2020 have concluded with a new finding: the appearance of a Roman villa under an Islamic tower
The archaeological site in Moncayo-Torre del Descargador is part of a collaboration initiative between the Guardamar town council, the University of Alicante Research Institute for Archaeology and Historical Heritage (INAPH)
along with the Valencian government and the Provincial Coastal Service
The aim of the project is scientific research (both from archaeology and construction)
the consolidation and improvement of the environment using museum techniques for restoration and/or preservation of the archaeological remains of the complex that were partially documented by the Archaeological Museum of Guardamar (MAG) in 1998 and 2004
The archaeological and architectural consolidation work is directed by a team made up by Antonio García Menárguez
former director of the MAG; Sonia Gutiérrez Lloret
Professor of Archaeology at the University of Alicante; Víctor Cañavate Castejón
archaeologist at the local council in Elche; and José Gambín Lorenzo
architect and building engineer from the Guardamar town hall
the museum has the collaboration of restorer Begoña Movellán; pre-doctoral researchers Raquel Bujalante and José María Moreno
and the support of the Archaeological Museum of Guardamar.
The site covers many remains scattered along the coastal dune complex
with an extensive sequence of occupation going back to Roman times and reaching the Islamic period
At least two nuclei have been located in what must have been a more extensive site
some three hundred metres apart: the Moncayo itself (B.R.L.)
where two phases of occupation of a Roman settlement have been documented with two different building periods (1st-4th and 5th-6th centuries); and a small superimposed mosque
similar to those found in the Caliphal Ribat of Guardamar; and the heritage asset of the Torre del Descargador in which part of a solid tapial structure was documented
work was carried out in the Moncayo area to document the complete plan of the oratory
work began on the Torre del Descargador in collaboration with the Regional Ministry
The first phase consisted of a complete excavation of the inner part of the tower and its access to document the sequence and restore the most deteriorated corner
the discovery of new structures during the fencing made it necessary to carry out a second action in the surroundings and the levels underneath
which had to be postponed until the autumn of 2020 due to the health emergency and the environmental conditions
in addition to documenting the full plan of the medieval structure and confirming its chronology (late 10th to mid 11th century)
have made it possible to back up with documentary evidence an extensive Roman phase that was underdeveloped
similar to that already described under the Moncayo Mosque
This phase corresponds to a Roman residential building
whose foundations form a complex and axial plan
made up a number of quadrangular rooms lined up along a wide corridor facing the sea
The UA professor explained how these large rooms with curved headrests are characteristic of 4th century villas
being used for representative and social functions such as the triclinium (room for banquets)
in the current state of our work and while waiting to continue in both sectors of the site
Gutiérrez stated that there must have been a rustic Roman villa on the beach at El Moncayo
two phases of productive use have been documented (high and low-imperial) in the area of El Moncayo
and a possible residential space of low-imperial typology in El Descargador
After a period of abandonment and systematic despoilment
a settlement from the Caliphate and Taifa periods was established on its ruins
of which a small mosque and a solid fortified structure (tower-warehouse) remain
which was built using the walls of one of the large Roman rooms as a foundation
We still do not know for sure the extent of both settlements
as well as the activities that took place there
salting or salt production and transformation
the questions raised by this important discovery are exciting and the continuation of the work in this marvellous setting opens up very interesting expectations of knowledge and appreciation of this heritage from Guardamar
The structures have been consolidated and preserved, with a lightweight hunting fence, geotextiles, arlites and gravels of different textures and colours, as well as explanatory panels, to allow visits and understanding of the archaeological area of El Moncayo-Descargador. The asset is thus integrated into a site of great environmental value and in the project Memoria de Arena. Historia de Guardamar

ARCHIVED - Tapas trail charting the culinary history of Guardamar del Segura: October 24-30" style="margin: 5px 10px 5px 0px; float: left" width="100%" />
Guardamar del Segura is this week hosting its 11th 'Tapas with History' trail focusing on the 'Cuisine of the Phoenicians'
Eighteen establishments are taking part in the event
which highlights the historical importance of the town as a place of settlement for Mediterranean civilizations
in particular the Phoenician presence in the Cabezo Pequeño del Estaño
a small archaeological site located on the banks of the Segura River
Bars and cafes are offering a drink and tapa for just 3 euros from October 24 to 30
and participating venues can be found on the free app 'tapas with history Guardamar' where the public can take part in raffles and vote for their favourite dish
The winner will be announced on November 2
In addition to the tapas route, interactive street theatre will be staged in the town centre aimed at all ages
"Guardamar is steeped in history and each era has left an unmistakable mark on the town and its culture
Its history and cuisine are inextricably linked
and we want to show this valuable heritage in a dynamic
original and fun way," explained Councillor for Economic Promotion

THE beaches of Babilonia and Vivers de Guardamar
between the urban area and the south of the mouth of the river Segura
have seen a plethora of former fisherman’s cottages disappear
due to the continuous erosion caused by the sea
Despite attempts to save many historical properties down the decades the strength of the sea has been one battle that has caused the destruction of many properties within the area
concrete structures and sandbags have been placed in situ at the front of a plethora of properties
The Ministry of Ecological Transition have acted in the area where there were no standing houses
where at the same time the road has been withdrawn
Guardamar del Segura recovered 180 linear metres of beach in 2021 – costing €220,000
funded by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition
The move was effective in shielding the serious regression that the coastal profile suffers from the advance of the sea – that has escalated during the last decade – as reported by the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida Leader newspaper
once the homes of descendants of family chainlines
with costly ongoing repairs being the norm for others
Groups of owners have been vociferous with their determined support for help by the city council over the years
The Fishermens’ cottages fate lies in the hands of the sea
Guardamar Local Police were caught out at the weekend
as they scoured DGT (General Directorate of Traffic) rules and regulations looking for the section which might be applicable to a rather unusual e-scooter they intercepted being ridden through the streets of the town
The officers stopped a member of the public who had adapted his scooter to pull along a pushchair containing his daughter
“I never cease to be amazed by some of the things I see in our streets,” said one of the officers
The e-scooter had a rigid bar affixed to the chassis of his daughter’s pram as he merrily rode along his way
“vehicles cannot undergo reforms that alter their nature
and an electric scooter cannot have more than two wheels
nor be used by more than one person.”
Numerous accidents occur involving people riding Personal Mobility Vehicles (PMV)
The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) and the different local police forces regularly remind us of the rules for the use of these vehicles in guaranteeing road safety
but we still see users who are capable of surprising us by their total disregard for the law
as was witness by the Local Police of Guardamar del Segura

A GENTLE stroll from the golden sands of Spain’s Costa Blanca
four-star Hotel ParqueMar has long been a favourite of British sun-seekers
Shaded from the Mediterranean heat by towering pines
one UK guest described the 58-room resort as “lovely”
But now, as Spain struggles with its own small boats crisis, the ParqueMar and other prime tourist lodgings are being used to house newly arrived migrants — many set on continuing to the UK
For those who have just braved one of the world’s most treacherous routes from west Africa
the ParqueMar provides comfort and security
holidaymakers have been hit by the switch from tourist hotel to migrant accommodation
The ex-Ministry of Defence worker said they weren’t told the refugees would be arriving during their stay and that their holiday was “ruined”.
And he alleged they were left to rent a private apartment when the ParqueMar failed to make alternative arrangements.
The hotel sent Robert a message through Booking.com on October 30 telling him they “regretted the decision” to ask the couple to leave — but that it was “an order of the state”.
Booking.com later refunded the couple for the days remaining on their stay
The ParqueMar said it liaised with guests at the hotel — which has committed to housing refugees until December 31 — when the first of 231 migrants arrived
A spokesman insisted they helped source alternative accommodation for tourists and that some who left said it was through “fear” — despite the migrants being “totally harmless”
A spokesman for Spain’s Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration said it was “categorically false” that tourists had been “expelled” from hotels
The migrants staying at the venue in pleasant Guardamar del Segura, 24 miles down the coast from Alicante, are all male and mostly Senegalese, with a smattering of others from The Gambia and Morocco
Some are fleeing political unrest and violence
stared wistfully out to sea from the beach
The dad of two, from Senegal
mostly English speakers from former British colony The Gambia
Gambian Omar Soee, 36, a small businessman, said: “I would like to join my friend in Liverpool
And Ibrahim Umbye, 16, told me: “When I go to Holland, France, Germany or England
“I left Gambia as there were no jobs
His pal, 19, a Manchester United fan
Another Gambian shows me videos of their Atlantic voyage by traditional wooden boats — known as cayucos — from Africa to Spain’s Canary Islands
The ramshackle vessels are frequently wrecked or are blown off course amid the Atlantic breakers
One charity estimates 778 perished on the route in the first half of this year
the young men are brimming with enthusiasm for the future as they wait for the Spanish government to decide if they can remain
They spend their time either beside the beach or in the shade of pine trees in a park next to the hotel
John Beeston, 60, and wife Lynne, 59, from Ellesmere, Shrops, in Spain to dog-sit for friends, strolled near the ParqueMar in the 23C winter sun
Retired maths teacher John said: “This is a small place and 231 extra people will likely be a strain on local medical services.”
The ParqueMar says it charges £32 a day including VAT for each migrant’s bed and full board — so isn’t “making money”
Gambian youngsters are part of the biggest ever migration surge there
Spain has sent surveillance drones, a helicopter, four boats and some 40 police to Senegal to help authorities crack down on smuggling networks
But this year more than 32,000 have made the perilous journey
surpassing the previous record last weekend and overwhelming reception centres on the islands
A picture last month showed a cayuco carrying 120 migrants arriving in Los Cristianos in Tenerife
In a mirror of Britain’s small boats crisis
the Spanish government is scrambling to find accommodation for thousands of new arrivals in hotels and former military barracks on the mainland
Most — just under 10,000 — are being housed in the tourist hotspot of Andalucia in the south
Guardamar del Segura’s socialist mayor Jose Luis Saez told The Sun that nine migrants have already left the ParqueMar with “freedom of movement”
He said: “We haven’t had any problems with the migrants
The situation is one of total tranquillity.”
Hotel Alegria Cabo de Gata — promising “sun
fun and comfort” — has also been requisitioned for migrants
who hang their washing from balconies overlooking the swimming pool
Local Press say 433 were housed at the four-star
Rafael Hernando, a right-wing MP representing Almeria Province in the Spanish Parliament
said he had been monitoring the comings and goings
The ex-Parliamentary spokesman for the People’s Party
revealed: “The migrants all arrived with their mobile telephones and many with connections
"The following day they abandoned the hotel
“The mafias often use Spain as a transit country then disperse them northwards to countries like Britain
based on the origin of the immigrants and the language they speak
“When I say they are collaborating with the mafias
it’s because these people pay fares of up to $8,000 (around £6,500)
he added: “The migrants are transported using a mother ship which tows the cayucos until they get near the coast
“The main victims of trafficking are the migrants themselves who
fall into the hands of criminals and mafia organisations
"Outside the hotel in Almeria I saw some of these people waiting to gain the confidence of the migrants to exploit them for criminal purposes
200 African migrants went to the Portomagno Hotel on October 25
The sea view lodgings claim to offer “an especially relaxing stay” with a “Mediterranean location”
many of the migrants lounge on the promenade overlooking the beach
said: “With so many young men all together
I wouldn’t feel comfortable coming here on my own.”
Watching yachts bobbing on the waves
This most powerful of pulls — despite the risk of a lingering death — is why they keep on coming
THIS map illustrates how border checks across Europe’s supposedly passport-free Schengen area have been reinstated to help combat uncontrolled migration
Crackdowns have been going on across vast swathes of the continent
They come as European nations battle people traffickers – along with fears surrounding the possibility of terror and security threats

The expat from the Czech Republic has become the first swimmer of the season to flout a red flag and swim while the warning red flag was flying in Guardamar del Segura on Wednesday morning
The bather apparently ignored warnings from Red Cross (Cruz Roja) lifeguards that the red flag forbids swimming in the sea for safety reasons
Red flags are the most serious of all beach warning flags and are flown to warn of the dangers to swimmers and to lifeguards who risk their lives if they are forced to make a rescue
