“We had been toying with a pizza and pasta concept for a while and then the location became available,” Bendel said. “It felt right to create synergy in this part of town near Vine.”
RJB Restaurant Group restaurants, like Bloom in San Juan Capistrano and Ironwood in Laguna Hills, all have similar tones, but each is its own experience, said Parlor managing partner Joe Guillena.
“These guys have opened six restaurants in 10 years ... they really know what they are doing,” Guillena said.
The staff of Vine Restaurant & Bar stood outside and applauded as Parlor opened its doors for a friends-and-family preview over the weekend, welcoming the new eatery to the RJB Restaurant Group and the neighborhood.
The 5,000-square-foot restaurant takes over the space formerly occupied by David Pratt’s Brick, with a 6-foot stone hearth oven at its heart. The U.S.-made oven uses both gas flame and wood-fired cooking, fueled by almond and white oak logs.
While the oven will be used to fire pizzas, chef Jared Cook maintains that Parlor isn’t so much an Italian restaurant as it is a modern American pizza parlor.
“Jared really wanted to make a distinction that we are not an Italian restaurant at all, without a doubt,” said Guillena. “You can see the American flag out front.”
Instead, Parlor focuses on what it has deemed “pizza Americana.”
“My vision of the perfect pizza is sourdough crust, big puff bubbles from cold fermentation, crispy, chewy outside with soft tender interior,” said Cook. “No flop when you pick it up.”
The menu offers eight pizzas, like a classic Margherita and an elevated pie with truffle-roasted maitake mushrooms. While the pizzas are notable in their own right, the menu also features dishes from chef-partner Nate Overstreet, who O.C. foodies might remember from Wheat & Sons Butcher, one of the original tenants at the Anaheim Packing House.
At the now-shuttered Wheat & Sons, Overstreet was known for porchetta sandwiches made with impossibly tender pork, chicken and duck with crackling skin from his rotisserie. Diners can look forward to versions of those long-missed dishes on the Parlor menu, like “Nate’s porchetta” and a “rotisserie half chicken” served with roasted cauliflower, drippings potatoes and Calabrian chile dressing.
Like with Bendel’s other concepts, the beverage program is locally focused, headed up by Gabe Whorley. The drink selection features beer from San Clemente-based breweries like Left Coast and Docent as well as cocktails named for San Clemente landmarks like “El Camino Real” (a tequila-based cocktail) or the “Spicy Tina” (a vodka and limoncello drink) which references Tina & Vince’s Italian Deli.
Parlor is the seventh restaurant for Bendel and his partners, and Guillena said they are happy to bring another RJB Restaurant Group eatery to the San Clemente area.
“A high tide makes all boats rise,” said Guillena.
If you go: Parlor Woodfire Kitchen & Cocktails officially opened on July 22 and is located at 216 N. El Camino Real, San Clemente. Dinner is served from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 4 to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and 4 to 9 p.m. on Sundays.

A charging mobile phone plugged into the mains that was on top of a sofa was the cause of the fire that broke out on Sunday in a house in Guillena (Seville), which resulted in four fatalities: a married couple and their two children
That was the conclusion of Guardia Civil's investigation team
which reported that the cause of the fire was the explosion and combustion of the battery of a mobile phone that was charging in a ground floor of the property
The family members were reportedly unable to escape from the property due to the metal 'reja' security bars on the windows
the Christian Hernández municipal pavilion in the town hosted both the wake and the funeral mass for the four people who died in the fire on Monday
with a large number of people attending to pay their last respects to the family
The funeral mass was attended by some 2,500 people and it was the auxiliary bishop of Seville
together with the parish priests of Guillena-Las Pajanosas
of the hamlet of Torre de la Reina and of El Ronquillo
The procession of hearses carried the coffins to the Plaza de España
from where they were carried on the shoulders of family and friends of the deceased to the municipal cemetery in Guillena
has expressed the "deep shock" that the municipality is suffering as a result of this tragedy

BRECKENRIDGE — Former Silverthorne dentist Bonifacio Guillena III, 42, of Greeley, has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty in January to possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance
according to a news release from the Fifth Judicial District Attorney’s Office
raid at Comfort Dental on Blue River Parkway in Silverthorne
where a former employee accused Guillena of operating a “pill mill,” or illegally distributing prescription drugs
Silverthorne Police Department officers and federal Drug Enforcement Agency personnel raided the office on suspicion of prescription drug fraud
seizing hundreds of documents that revealed Guillena was illegally distributing prescriptions for controlled substances such as Xanax
Percocet and oxycodone as early as February 2017
Before his three-year prison sentence was handed down Monday, July 29, Guillena originally was sentenced April 1 to three years in community corrections
he was arrested for stalking in Weld County
and he pleaded guilty to that felony charge
the court rescinded the original community corrections sentence
“The defendant not only abused his dental license and honorable practice
but he proved the harmful effects drugs and drug abuse can cause to so many,” District Attorney Bruce Brown was quoted as saying in the release
“Defendant (Guillena) was originally given the chance at a much lighter sentence in community corrections
but his reckless and dangerous actions showed prison is the right place for him to be now.”

TotalEnergies will build a total of five solar plants
the 53MW La Noria and the 55MW La Carrascosa
The total estimated investment in the solar plants is roughly €200m ($213.8m)
the five plants will generate enough clean energy to supply more than 150,000 homes while preventing 140,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually
which is expected to last for the next 12 months
could create more than 800 direct and indirect jobs in the region
The company and the Guillena City Council has agreed to collaborate on promoting local employment and introducing vocational training programmes
The company also stated that it will protect biodiversity at the solar plants and engaged with the Autonomous University of Madrid and the Forest Science and Technology Centre of Catalonia to develop knowledge and specific application protocols to preserve the environment and the biodiversity of their surroundings
Guillena mayor Lorenzo Medina said: “This project represents progress in the determined commitment of our country and our autonomous community to renewable energies and to leadership in the production of clean energy that contributes to our bet and fight against climate change with the reduction of CO₂ emissions into the atmosphere
its people count and continue to perceive that special positive relationship with this farm and now with this project
We all know that it is difficult to find anyone who opposes the development of clean energy as such
but we are also aware of the reluctance towards the impact on the landscape
towards the change in land use and towards the many unproven theories that sometimes prevail in the population when it touches them closely.”

Eni Plenitude SpA Società Benefit built about 400 megawatts (MW) of power generation capacity from renewable energy (RE) sources in Spain last year
growing its installed RE capacity in the country to almost 950 MW
is more than double compared to Eni’s installed RE capacity in Spain in 2023
the Italian state-backed energy major said in an online statement
The Spanish additions in 2024 have increased Eni’s global installed RE capacity to four GW
a goal it outlined in its 2024–27 plan published March 14
The Caparacena solar project in Granada accounted for 150 MW of last year’s installations in Spain
The project comprises three photovoltaic plants with a capacity of nearly 50 MW each
The project has a 400-kilovolt (kv) substation enabling connection to the national transmission grid and another 200-kv substation and line shared with other operators
also completed plants with a combined capacity of nearly 250 MW in the Renopool solar park in Extremadura and the Guillena solar park in Andalusia
A further 820 MW is under construction in Spain
“During 2024 Plenitude has registered significant organic growth in Spain with the completion of several renewable projects realized also thanks to the good relationships we have developed locally”
Eni head of renewables in Western Europe and managing director of Plenitude in Spain
“Spain is a strategic country for our company and we want to have a positive impact in the areas where we operate
but also on the communities that host us”
Early last year Plenitude agreed to join a partnership between BlueFloat Energy International SLU and Sener Renewable Investments aimed at developing offshore wind farms in Spain
“The agreement with Plenitude bolsters the joint venture formed by BlueFloat and Sener Renewable Investments 3 years ago
creating a leading consortium in the offshore wind sector in Spain with a total portfolio of approximately 1.25 GW [gigawatts] of floating offshore wind projects across Galicia (Parque Nordes)
Catalonia (Parc Tramuntana) and the Canary Islands (Parque Tarahal)”
Spain has set a target of raising the share of renewables in its power generation to 81 percent by 2030
with a 48 percent goal for overall energy end-use
according to the country’s “Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan 2023–30”
Both figures are up from the previous plan submitted to the European Union
Eni through Plenitude plans to reach over eight GW of installed RE capacity by 2027
Plenitude also has a market base of 10 million users in Europe for the sale of energy and energy solutions
as well as a network of nearly 22,000 charging points for electric vehicles
New research by Wharton’s Mauro Guillen explores how the long-term effects of monarchies are good for economies
Wharton's Mauro Guillen talks about his new research showing how monarchies benefit countries' economies
As the U.K.’s House of Windsor prepares for Saturday’s royal wedding of Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle, British taxpayers are bracing to foot an estimated bill of more than $40 million (£30 million) for security arrangements alone
but the long-term effects of monarchies are good for the economy and the standard of living
according to a new study by Wharton management professor Mauro Guillen
(Listen to the podcast at the top of this page.)
Why exactly are property rights so important
direct effect on the protection of property rights,” Guillen said
When companies and individuals feel confident that their property rights — including intellectual property — will not be abused or confiscated by the government
they are more willing to invest in the economy
create more jobs and generate other economic boosters
property rights come under attack in three specific situations
One is when there is a social or political conflict in the country
“That always leads to undermining of property rights and has negative economic consequences,” he said
The second is when politicians remain in power
“As they get used to being the ones who run the government
they become abusive and they tend to privilege their friends — that’s why we have term limits,” he explained
The third is the level of checks and balances on the government
the Congress or the judiciary in a country could restrain the executive branch from acting arbitrarily or expropriating the assets of a company or an individual
“Don’t assume that monarchies are backward and that monarchies don’t deliver a good result economically
That’s not true.”–Mauro Guillen
“[you] need to reduce conflict; you need to reduce the number of years that politicians sustain power because we know that they become abusive sooner or later; and you want to have checks and balances,” he said
“There is a lot of discussion about whether it’s better to have a democracy or a dictatorship
and another dimension to this debate has been whether monarchies have a reason to exist today,” he said
“I wasn’t expecting monarchies actually to perform relatively well in terms of delivering higher standards of living for the population,” he says
the number of monarchies has been rising over the past few years
“There is something about monarchies that keeps them in place
and some of that is the economic performance that they deliver.”
Both monarchies and democracies have a mixed record in delivering economic growth and all the benefits that flow from that
“We have some monarchies in the world that perform economically extremely well like the U.K.
republics that have done well include the U.S.
many countries that are either monarchies or republics have poor track records
Guillen said he is aware that his finding that monarchies do a better job at protecting property rights is “very counter intuitive.” People may say “that sounds really weird,” because they think kings and queens are arbitrary
Many monarchies have changed for the better over time
and pointed to the so-called “constitutional democratic monarchies” like those in Europe or in Japan
Such monarchies “tend to be very protective of property rights,” have a better chance of reducing internal conflict
and put limits on politicians and prime ministers that want to abuse their powers
For every four monarchies that are democratic and constitutional
adding that many of those are in the Middle East
more and more countries have become democracies over the years
“The historical trend is towards monarchies — essentially kings and queens — accepting a constitutional order and accepting … the democratic rules of the game,” said Guillen
That could also mean the best of both worlds
“You can get all of the benefits from being a democratic country with a constitutional order
and at the same time you get some of the benefits from having a monarchy in place.”
Some constitutional democratic monarchies “work better than others
and have delivered a better standard of living for the population,” Guillen noted
“The evidence in my research shows that there’s no reason for those countries to abolish the monarchy.”
Guillen went over some of the chief benefits of monarchies
such as those in North Africa like Morocco or in the Middle East
may have “one advantage” over a country like the U.K.
which is that in overcoming social or political conflict
Although such repression may help a monarchy cling to power
“in the long run this comes back to haunt them,” he said
In constitutional democratic monarchies like the U.K.
the key advantage is that they have much more legitimacy in telling politicians not to perpetrate themselves in power and make way for rotation
you are bound to be more protective of property rights,” he said
“You’re more likely to put term limits on politicians that want to abuse [their powers].” Here
has exercised her constitutional role admirably in keeping the country’s prime ministers in check
whenever they seemed to overextend their reach
“You need to reduce conflict; you need to reduce the number of years that politicians sustain power because we know that they become abusive sooner or later; and you want to have checks and balances.”–Mauro Guillen
monarchies bring in “a psychological mechanism,” said Guillen
“If you’re the prime minister and you know there is a higher authority
although it may be a purely formal one and a pure figurehead like a king or queen
If there’s nobody else higher or above you
then psychologically you are more prone to abuse your position,” he said
“Don’t assume that monarchies are backward and that they don’t deliver good results economically — that’s not true,” Guillen said
he made it abundantly clear that he is not making a case for a return to monarchies as the form of government
shape or form that every country in the world should adopt a monarchy on the basis of these results,” he said
“The monarchy only works wherever there is a tradition and a foundation for it.” For example
Guillen’s argument is more about allowing a particular form of government to prevail if it is delivering the goods
“There’s no point in those countries in which the monarchy works well to organize a movement to get it abolished
because it does produce higher standards of living.”
ensure economic growth and higher standards of living are of two types — parliamentary republics like Germany
Parliamentary republics tend to ensure better protection of property rights than presidential republics
He pointed out that many presidential republics
is the exception rather than the rule among the presidential republics.”
Monarchies are also “much better than republics at navigating periods of uncertainty” such as the one triggered by Britain’s imminent exit from the European Union
citing research by other scholars on the subject
the institution of the monarchy [in the U.K.] provides a measure of stability.”
