A large fire broke out late this afternoon at a pallet manufacturing facility in the Valle de Güímar Industrial Estate in Tenerife
sending a towering column of smoke into the sky and forcing the closure of the TF-1 motorway in both directions
One person has been reported injured in the incident
which also affected a neighbouring food storage warehouse
the fire spread rapidly from the original site to the adjacent facility
with residents reporting several loud explosions from within the complex
The fire is believed to have started at approximately 7:00p.m
in a warehouse where large stacks of highly flammable wooden pallets were being stored
The Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) confirmed the incident shortly afterwards
alerting the public to the dense smoke crossing the motorway and causing visibility problems for drivers
Concerned residents and drivers have shared numerous videos on social media showing the scale of the fire and smoke
the Tenerife Fire and Rescue Consortium deployed five professional fire crews
supported by volunteer firefighters and Brifor forest brigade personnel
Road Maintenance Services from the Cabildo were also on standby to assist if necessary
Additional emergency support was provided by units from the Guardia Civil
the Local Police forces of Candelaria and Güímar
which were stationed at the scene as a precaution
The closure of the TF-1 caused significant traffic delays throughout the evening
Local Police also blocked access to the industrial estate's side road to ensure emergency crews could operate without obstruction
Candelaria Town Hall urged nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed to avoid smoke inhalation
and to avoid travel in the affected area due to the smoke
Authorities have appealed for public caution and cooperation as firefighting teams continue their efforts to fully extinguish and control the blaze

This is what Guimar Urbina Interiors’ clients have to say about their design experience
Cheryl Kaufman commissioned her home to be redesigned by esteemed luxury interior designer Guimar Urbina
Haute Design recently asked about the experience after Cheryl so kindly accepted to take the time and share her thoughts
Additional images of the residence seen throughout this article can be seen here
What were some of the main things you wanted Guimar to do with this space
Cheryl Kaufman: I wanted Guimar to transform our home from a Mediterranean style to a more contemporary style and to execute a complete renovation with which we would be proud to use for entertaining
I could not visualize what I wanted but Guimar was brilliant with reading between the lines when we went through some images of rooms I liked
When Guimar made her presentation of her proposal for our home
my husband Dana and I were completely by the beauty and creativity with which she captured our vision for living in our renovated home
What was your favorite part about working with her
I met with a few designers that were recommended to me but they didn’t wow me enough to want to begin renovating our home
I then discovered Houzz and poured through each and every designer South Florida
I came across of project photo from Guimar Urbina Interiors and it seemed to be exactly what I wanted
I love how she did a lot of the leg work before we met
she gently made me aware of it and told me why it might not be the right choice
Guimar met with me often and always kept us informed about our budget and what to expect next
When we would visit stores to choose furniture
it was clear Guimar has strong relationships with so many of the vendors
HD: There are plenty of accents of wood throughout the home
yet it is not overbearing – quite the opposite
Was that a feature you already had in mind or did Guimar make the suggestion
CK: The wood was completely Guimar’s idea
the blending into structural columns which needed to remain for foundational purposes
as well as the fabulous wooden custom doors to our bedroom suite – it was all Guimar’s idea
HD: The artwork and decorations add subtle yet impactful nots of color throughout the mostly neutral-shaded home
Are these art pieces and decorations yours or did Guimar help pick these out
CK: Guimar chose the pop of color on the oversized chair in the family room as well as in the throw pillows and other accessories
She even drew colors out from some of our artwork when she chose our accessories
While many of the accessories were chosen by Guimar
some we already had but just didn’t know how to properly place them and group them
Guimar helped us find the correct use for them
we had most of it but Guimar recommended that we reframe them
She me with me at the framing store to help us to choose new frames for each of our hanging art pieces
she came to the house and assisted us with choosing the perfect spot for each piece
we engaged Guimar to assist us with filling a few empty walls
Guimar helped me choose the size of the custom artwork piece above our bed
HD: What would you say to anyone who might be reading this and is currently looking for a luxury interior designer in South Florida
I had a wonderful experience with Guimar and her team
talented and everything I could have asked for in a design team
Not only did Guimar’s team have incredible vision
Emergency services continued through the night to battle a major fire at the Valle de Güímar Industrial Estate in Tenerife
with 40 firefighters staying on site to contain the blaze
which has been classified as a level 3 emergency
The fire broke out at approximately 7:00p.m
generating a vast column of smoke visible from the TF-1 motorway and across the entire Güímar Valley
The smoke severely reduced visibility along the motorway
prompting the Guardia Civil to temporarily close it in both directions for safety reasons
authorities urged drivers to exercise extreme caution when passing through the area
Firefighting efforts have been focused on preventing the flames from spreading to nearby units and containing the fire within the affected warehouse
The response team includes 22 professional firefighters from the Tenerife Fire Consortium
supported by 16 volunteer firefighters from various stations around the island
Six members of the Cabildo's Brifor forest brigade also joined the operation
Two ambulances were also dispatched as a precautionary measure
and one person has been confirmed injured during the incident
authorities will begin an investigation into its cause and carry out a technical assessment of the structural integrity of the affected building
The fire started at the Lomo Redondo viewpoint at 1,225m in altitude
authorities have found not only the origin but also suspect it was started intentionally as an act of arson
the fire continues to burn over a month after it began
To date, over 15,000ha of forest have burned across the Mount Teide peak of the island. The intensity and size of the fire was fuelled by strong winds, heat, and very low humidity. It has already been registered as the worst fire in the Canary Islands in the last 40 years and the worst in all of Spain for 2023
the damage to the wilderness and ecosystem at this altitude has been incalculable as this is a unique zone that
allows specific vegetation and animal life that isn’t possible in the lower
These altitudes are also where a great many vineyards are cultivated
Unlike the 2021 fires on the island of La Palma due to a volcanic eruption and which viticulturists are still working to recover from
this is a rather remote region in Tenerife that didn’t immediately threaten built-up areas
although more than 26,000 residents were told to evacuate as a precaution
Those with vineyards in the area could do little more than watch at firefighters battled the blaze
Worry grew a great deal once the fire jumped the Cordillera Dorsal
a 25km ridge that bifurcates Tenerife and therefore allowed the fire to spread to the northern side of the island
Tenerife has the most on it within the Canary Islands and there are two that cover the region of the fire: Tacoronte-Acentejo and Valle de Güímar
Administrators at Tacoronte-Acentejo told Decanter they’d thankfully been spared any damage from the fire as it had largely been contained to the far upper reaches of the Teide peak where no one has any vineyards
initially told Decanter that they had been waiting to get access to the affected areas
they found that 2ha of vines had been burned
The owner is a viticulturist who sells the grapes to one of the larger producers on the island
Many other vineyard owners had extremely close calls given that the flames came within 50m of their vines
The vineyards were spared given that they have been found to be natural firebreaks
While the level of loss given the scope and intensity of the fire may seem low
covering a great deal of the Valle de Güimar territory and when asked about possible smoke taint issues by Decanter
Rodríguez García confirmed that 64ha could potentially be affected and that they were carrying out analyses to understand the scope of the issues
Wineries in the neighbouring DO Valle de la Orotava have also commented that they are potentially concerned about the smoke and ash drift
As has been seen around the world in recent years
is often one of the long-lasting issues brought about by climate change-provoked wildfires
In addition to the issues of burned vineyards and smoke taint
in combination with the extreme climactic conditions of 2023 in Spain
it begins at the end of August or beginning of September
but this year saw harvest start at the end of July
which was accelerated considerably once the fire broke out in mid-August
While the fire on Tenerife will undoubtedly be fully extinguished in the near future, it, along with countless other fires across the globe this year, such as those in Greece and Italy

Firefighters have successfully brought the large blaze
which broke out on Tuesday evening in a warehouse at the Valle de Güímar Industrial Estate
which led to a large-scale emergency response and the temporary closure of the TF-1 motorway
according to officials from the Tenerife Fire Consortium
in a commercial warehouse and produced a massive column of smoke visible from the southern motorway and throughout the Güímar Valley
leading the Guardia Civil and the Cabildo’s Roads Department to temporarily close the TF-1 for safety
and members of the BRIFOR forest brigade have now largely stood down
with only two heavy urban fire engines (BUP) and a personnel relief vehicle from the Tenerife Fire Consortium remaining at the scene
a nodriza water tanker unit (BUN) from BRIFOR is assisting in cooling operations
Emergency crews have managed to open the structure to ventilate the smoke still lingering inside
Firefighters continue to carry out "refresher" tasks along the side of the building facing the ravine and are focusing intensively on extinguishing embers at the rear of the facility
particularly in the area closest to the motorway
Authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation until all remaining hotspots are fully extinguished
technical assessments and a formal investigation into the cause of the fire will follow
Guimar Urbina has become one of the most notable modern Interior Designers in the South Florida industry
FL and expands internationally with projects across the United States
Guimar recently completed a unique project involving a renovation of an athletic rehab and recovery facility in South Florida
Haute Design: How did a project to design a gym come about
Guimar Urbina: One of my family members decided to open his own facility for rehab and recovery
It was a very challenging project since we only had 30 days to complete the entire renovation and to receive the fixtures
HD: There are plenty familiar names on the jerseys displayed above the gym mirror
Are all of those athletes current or former clients of the gym
those jerseys belong to some of the professional athletes who work with my client
HD: What is the main difference you felt while designing this space compared to a home
GU: The first major difference that stood out to me was the size of the open space
marbles or wood floors we are used to working with inside a home
It was also very interesting to work with the spacing between each massage bed and workout machine
HD: What was the biggest challenge for you throughout this project
GU: The toughest part of this project was convincing my client
that a scale drawing and three-dimensional renderings are the perfect tools to avoid mistakes before ordering fixtures and furniture pieces
working with family is never easy (ha ha ha)
HD: Would you work on another gym or non-standard design project in the future
I have two clients who are professional baseball players and they want me to design their home gym
it’s great for me and the firm to have the opportunity to work on these new projects
The torrential rain brought by the weather pre-alert issued by the Canary Islands Government is already causing incidents
with at least 80 people trapped in a supermarket in Guimar
According to reports by Radio Televisión Canaria
many of those affected are waiting to move their vehicles from the supermarket underground car park to the main access road to the Güímar Industrial Estate
The heavy rainfall has led to flooding on roads in the area
working to pump water out of the car park and move a lorry that is stuck
Authorities urge residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel until the weather situation improves
Further updates will be provided as emergency teams continue their efforts to ensure safety in the affected areas

The "penitents" in pointed hoods
and religious statues take over the streets for a week of solemn processions
Save Visited Rate Review ShareProcesión Magna in Güímar
Viernes Santo (Good Friday)Procesión Magna in Güímar
is one of the most important and profoundly ingrained religious holidays in Spain
Religious brotherhoods carry elaborate processions with well constructed floats that depict biblical themes through the streets as a way for communities to honor the Passion of Christ
you can often see locals wearing traditional clothing and listening to melancholic music
Semana Santa is especially well-known for its majesty and seriousness in places like Seville
attracting tourists from all over the world to see the show
The largest island of Tenerife is no exception to Spain's celebrations
and its historical cities see countless religious ceremonies and street processions throughout the week leading to Easter
The celebration starts on Palm Sunday and continues to Easter Day
most congregations have at least one daily procession with a church service
the most remarkable day is Good Friday commemorating the death and burial of Jesus Christ
Easter customs in Tenerife feature a range of diverse Canarian and Spanish culinary traditions
One of them is "potaje de vigilia," a filling stew made with potatoes
This meal is well-known specifically for adhering to the Lenten diet restrictions by omitting meat
"torrijas" have also become a popular Easter delicacy
They are essentially French toast made with bread pieces dipped in sugar
and frequently spiced with cinnamon and honey
The most memorable processions involve members of different religious brotherhoods
These iconic "penitents" are wearing long cloaks with pointed hoods that totally cover their faces and revealing only their eyes
Other participants of solemn parades are "Nazarenos"
who typically walk barefoot and carry shackles or large wooden crosses
it's common to parade huge floats with heavy religious statues through the streets
traditionally accompanied with sombre religious music by a brass band
The most elaborate Semana Santa festivities take place in the authentic towns of the island
and the capital city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife
The most famous celebration is observed in San Cristóbal de la Laguna
the religious centre of Tenerife and UNESCO World Heritage Site
The very special occasion not to miss in La Laguna is its Good Friday evening procession — Procesion del Silencio or the Silent Procession
and the town is illuminated solely by candles
The pious brotherhood parade departs at around 9:30 pm from the Iglesia de la Concepción
A slow pace set by an ominous drumbeat creates a moving and a bit unnerving atmosphere you are never going to forget
Easter Sunday brings the joy of Resurrection and
so families celebrate with local delicacies like sancocho (salted fish served with potatoes)
came to TT from Venezuela two years ago with her father
That mission was shattered on Monday when her body was found with that of three men in a field at Daly Road
All four bodies had gunshot wounds to the heads
Pedro now has to take care of his four grandchildren
ten and eight and is making arrangements to bury his daughter
a farmer was taking his goats to Daly Road when he saw the bodies and called the police
and Jose Serrano were killed elsewhere and their bodies dumped
At the Forensic Science Centre in St James on Tuesday
Pedro described his daughter as a fighter and a family-oriented person
He said all she ever wanted to do was provide for her family and ensure that they could live a comfortable life
“She was always taking care of her children and her family
Having to lose a daughter is an indescribable pain
There is nothing that I can say that would express how I feel right now
Pedro told Newsday Marcano’s husband was killed in Venezuela
He said he was told of his daughter’s murder by a neighbour at their Hope Road
I never thought in my wildest dreams we would have faced something like this when we came here
We thought we were coming to a safe haven.” One tenant told Newsday on Tuesday that none of Marcano’s relatives have returned to the apartment since Monday
Pedro appealed for assistance to take care of his grandchildren
saying he only needs the assistance until he could get on his feet
He also asked for help to make arrangements for his daughter’s funeral
“Even if I could get the help for the children

upon identifying the body of one of the victims
had to be carried by other relatives to the St James infirmary to be treated

what the hell does the IRA and Boston have to do with pyramids in Tenerife
I have a UFO-related tirade in the pipeline
how is that you’re not all getting drunk at playa de las americas
Guanchi – is that at the resorts at the south of the Island
not all of us are beer swilling fatties broiling in the sun
Some of us go ‘cos its cheap and the kids can have a whale of a time
Now summer is officially here and before the thermometer loses its head entirely
it’s the ideal time to explore Tenerife’s east coast
Around Puertitio de GüÃmar the default setting is sun and there’s very little shade to be found
but the near-constant breeze keeps everything just the right temperature for exploring the coastline
the central eastern coastline is largely what is known as malpaÃs (badlands); arid scrub land with desert-like conditions
you might be forgiven for thinking that nothing grows or lives here but in fact
the malpaÃs is home to 150 species of flora which support 100 types of insect and 60 types of butterfly
not to mention the thriving communities of lizards that accompany your every step
But the best reason of all for choosing Puertito de GüÃmar as a walking base is because of its great seafood and tapas restaurants and the little port with its stylish boardwalk where swimmers and sunbathers frolic
There can be few better places to end a hike with a swim
The path winds its way through clumps of pink marine thyme and bright green sea lettuce until it reaches Montaña de la Mar which should be awarded a prize for self delusion as
rising to no more than a paltry 27 metres above sea level
As the trail reaches the base of Montaña Grande the vegetation morphs into tall grasses and sweet tabaiba and everywhere
zigzagging round islands filled with the fat spikes of cardón
to Puertito and that promise of a cold beer and lunch
Beyond the turn off for Montaña Grande the path continues to the tiny coastal settlement of Socorro with its beach houses and its two chapels ““ one above
one below ““ and its little beach of Chimisay where the miraculous discovery of the Patron Saint of the Canary Islands
you might expect there to be an ostentatious monument or two but in fact
there is just a simple cross set in a block of concrete
The ostentation is preserved for the Candelaria Basilica
Troughs: The scenery could get a bit monotonous if you were to walk here every day and the lack of trees and natural shade mean it’s best to avoid high summer days when the breeze drops
My view: 2.5 Stars ““ This is an easy
pleasant walk which offers a landscape which is more akin to the Eastern Canary Islands
I particularly like the abundance of grasses around Montaña Grande

A man has died and a woman is in serious condition following a traffic accident on the TF-1 motorway in Tenerife near Punta Prieta
The incident occurred this afternoon (Friday) on the northbound carriageway heading towards Santa Cruz
The emergency services received the first alert at around 3:20pm
which is when the Canary Islands Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) was informed of a car that had rolled several times and come to rest upside down
The vehicle had crashed into a bus shelter after hitting a concrete barrier used to separate traffic lanes
Eyewitnesses described a dramatic scene in which the car lost control
and rolled over before coming to a stop at the bus stop
Images taken at the scene show extensive damage to the vehicle
highlighting the violent nature of the crash
paramedics confirmed that the male driver had suffered injuries incompatible with life and could only certify his death at the scene
who had already managed to exit the vehicle by the time emergency services arrived
was treated for serious injuries and was taken to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz
Firefighters worked to secure the area and manage the wreckage
officers from the Guardia Civil took charge of the traffic
and remained at the scene to oversee the custody of the deceased until judicial authorities arrived
The incident caused significant disruption on the TF-1 and has once again raised concerns over road safety on one of Tenerife's busiest thoroughfares
An investigation into the cause of the accident is currently underway
A motorway maintenance worker has died after being struck by a car whilst working on the northbound carriageway of the TF-1 near Caleta Punta Prieta by Guimar
was reported by the Canary Islands Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES)
SUC paramedics arrived at the scene but were unable to save the victim
confirming that he died from fatal injuries suffered in the accident
Teams from the Tenerife Island Council’s Road Maintenance Department also attended the scene to clear the roadway
officers from the Canary Islands Police and the Guardia Civil carried out the necessary investigations to determine the circumstances of the accident
Authorities have yet to release further details on the cause of the incident or the identity of the victim
experienced a 3.3 magnitude earthquake yesterday (Saturday)
according to a report from the National Geographic Institute (IGN)
occurred at 1:41pm at a depth of approximately 28 kilometres
This seismic event is part of a series of tremors detected yesterday by the IGN in the area between the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife
One of these earthquakes was located northwest of the Tenerife municipality of Fasnia
measuring 1.9 magnitude at a depth of 8 kilometres
and the other was detected northwest of Gáldar in Gran Canaria
measuring 1.8 magnitude at a depth of 11 kilometres
The Güímar earthquake was felt by local residents who reported their experiences to the local authorities and emergency services
although no material or personal damage has been recorded
While the local population has expressed some concern
emphasising that such events are relatively common in the region due to its volcanic nature
the organisation responsible for seismic monitoring in Spain
has stated that the seismic activity recorded this Saturday is within the normal range for the Canary Islands
situated over an area of moderate tectonic activity
regularly experiences low to medium intensity tremors
This seismic activity is constantly monitored to ensure the safety of residents and to prevent any major eventualities
the IGN detailed that the tremors were both of lower magnitude and occurred at a shallower depth
which generally implies a lesser perception at the surface
and didn’t cause any alarm among the population
Seismologists have explained that the depth at which these movements occur is a key factor in determining their impact on the surface
tend to be less perceptible than shallow ones but can cover a wider area
like those in Fasnia (Tenerife) and Gáldar (Gran Canaria)
although they tend to be felt more intensely in the immediate area
The scientific community continues to study these phenomena to improve the prediction and understanding of earthquakes in the region
offer a significant field of study for researchers
Data collected by the IGN and other organisations help create risk maps and develop more effective contingency plans to protect the population
local authorities in Tenerife recommend that citizens stay informed and prepared for any eventuality
Although low-magnitude earthquakes usually do not cause damage
it is important to follow civil protection recommendations and stay alert to potential aftershocks or future seismic movements
A 27-year-old man from Candelaria (Tenerife) is under investigation by the Guardia Civil for alleged document forgery and theft
following a routine security check of vehicles and documents by officers stationed in Güímar
The incident occurred in the industrial area of Güímar
where officers stopped a car at the checkpoint
and that the sticker on the windscreen belonged to another car
Further investigation revealed that the registration number on the sticker matched a rental car and that the sticker had been stolen from it
The man under investigation is an employee of the car rental company from which the sticker was stolen
This connection led to formal charges being brought against him for document forgery and theft
The case has been referred to the Court of Güímar
where further legal proceedings will take place

The Canary Islands have been given a budget of 1.6 billion euros by the Spanish Government to improve roads
and the construction of a third lane in both directions of the TF-1 motorway between Santa Cruz and Playa de Las Américas took a step closer yesterday (Tuesday) as the Ministry of Public Works put the drafting of a project for a third lane between Güímar and Granadilla de Abona out to tender
This project has a budget of almost two million euros and has to take into account 13 junctions
and is alongside the ones already being studied for the stretch between San Isidro and Playa de Las Americas and the cut-and-cover tunnel on the motorway between from Las Americas to Fañabé
The construction of two more lanes along this 34 kilometre section of the TF-1 will not only allow an increase in the capacity of the island's traffic but will also significantly improve safety for the vehicles that pass through it
More than 50,000 vehicles a day use the section between Güímar and San Isidro
mostly heading South between 7:30am and 9:00am
and between 3:30pm and 5:00pm in the direction of Santa Cruz
this high-capacity road connects the largest industrial estate in Tenerife
with the new port of Granadilla in which there are high expectations of economic development in the medium and long term
which will considerably increase the volume of traffic on the TF-1
The section of the motorway between Güímar and San Isidro was built in the 1970s and the roadway was doubled from a single lane at the end of the 1980s
work on the third lane from Santa Cruz to Güímar was completed
with the tender for the drafting of the project
the Tenerife Insular Management Plan is fulfilled
which includes among its objectives the "progressive adaptation" of the infrastructures to the needs of the Island
At the end of May the drafting of the project for the layout and construction of the third lane of the TF-1 between San Isidro and Playa de Las Américas was put out to tender
a nine-kilometre stretch through which more than 90,000 vehicles circulate every day and which presents problems of saturation
with frequent traffic jams in Guaza and Los Cristianos
the works continue on the Las Chafiras-Oroteanda junction to ease traffic on the TF-1 and around San Miguel and the Golf areas
A serious traffic accident has occurred after a lorry veered off the TF-1 motorway in Tenerife and overturned
The incident took place on the TF-1 near Puertito de Güímar
on the north bound carriageway in the direction of Santa Cruz
are currently at the scene attending to the situation
the extent of any injuries remains unknown
The authorities are urging drivers in the area to exercise maximum caution and patience due to potential disruptions to traffic flow
The Guardia Civil has arrested a 45-year-old man suspected of several vehicle related thefts in Güímar (Tenerife) over the past two weeks
incidents that have caused "considerable concern” for the public
the suspect faces charges for six offences
including three counts of theft from vehicles
but investigators believe there could be more
Officers apprehended the man while he was inside a car
displaying what they described as "suspicious behaviour." Upon approaching the vehicle
they immediately recognised him due to his existing criminal record for similar offences
A subsequent inspection revealed that the car did not belong to him and that the door had been forced open
the Guardia Civil has linked the suspect to five additional crimes
The police are continuing their inquiries as they work to establish the full extent of his criminal activities
Two separate road accidents in Tenerife on Thursday resulted in four people being hospitalised
according to reports from the Canary Islands Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES)
The first incident occurred at 6:44pm on the TF-61
near the entrance to Puertito de Güímar
when a 70-year-old man was knocked over by a car and suffered a severe head injury
He was rushed to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in critical condition
including two ambulances from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC)
a doctor and a nurse from the Candelaria Health Centre
The Guardia Civil have launched an investigation into the incident
near Cruce del Salto in Granadilla in the south of the island

Have you seen discarded farmer’s rubble on Tenerife like the piles of agricultural stones in GüÃmar’s MalpaÃs
It would take an incredible feat of organisation and planning by local farmers to lay their rubble in such a way that it could be mistaken for step pyramids

He loved art; she preferred diamonds - He loved to do business; she liked to party all night - Gianni and Donatella Versace were the devoted but very different siblings who revelled in the outrageous trappings of his incredible success

Donatella Versace sweeps into the room a fashionable 30 minutes late
Despite the fact that she's wearing spike heels a good six inches high
positively dwarfed by her ever-present and hugely attentive escorts
She is wearing a skin-tight black Lycra vest and equally unforgiving black trousers
She has the body of a particularly well cared for 25-year-old
Her skin is the colour of caramel and her trademark platinum locks - dutifully teased into glossy waves for the occasion - reach down to her waist
Strategically placed at various points about the suite on the top floor of the Dorchester Hotel in Park Lane
are packets of Marlboro Red - the lady doesn't do lights - each wrapped its own
specially printed black and white paper case bearing the signature Versace Baroque swirls and her "DV" personal insignia
"We normally print them in the colour of the season," Guimar adds
as if that were the most natural thing in the world
"but we ran out." By the side of each pack is a lighter in an ice pink or blue crystal case and finished with the gold Medusa head that has
always been an integral part of the Versace identity
On a table in front of us are bottles of water and strawberries dipped in white chocolate
shiny and perfectly formed that they look like they've been varnished - sit on silver platters alongside
Versace is in London for cocktails and a dinner given by her friends Elizabeth Hurley - she of the Versace safety-pin dress fame - and David Furnish at the latter's Holland Park home to celebrate the publication of the latest issue of British Elle
central to which is an auction of clothing and accessories donated by every fashion brand worth its credentials - from Burberry to Chanel
and Paul Smith to John Galliano - in aid of the Breast Health Institute's Fund For Living
"We think that breast cancer is something that's already taken care of," Versace says
The women being diagnosed are getting younger and younger
This particular initiative takes care of women who already have breast cancer and need money to pay for someone to look after their children while they have treatment
It has been running for some time in the United States but is new to Britain
It is based at Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals in London
"I think if people are able to make a noise
10 per cent of the profits from every one of the 200 Versace stores the world over will be donated to the charity
Donatella Versace's public persona - the supercharged and impenetrable blonde
dripping with diamonds the size of boiled sweets
whose extravagant lifestyle decrees that her feet never touch anything as unsavoury as a pavement devoid of a red carpet
she looks much softer than she does in photographs
and the great care her retinue takes of her is exceeded only by her own willingness to please and ensure that anyone in her presence feels comfortable
"I've had to fight a lot to overcome my fears in life," she says
It's a great religion but also one that can limit your experience
You fear experience because everything is a sin
"I am Catholic but I don't believe that there are so many sins in life
You need to live and experience for yourself what is and isn't sinful
it would not be overstating things to say that Versace's life story to date has all the richness of the finest Renaissance drama
darker than most of us might ever wish for - or indeed dread
She was born in Reggio di Calabria in southern Italy
Although Santo was the eldest of the Versace children
the significant relationship was always the one between Gianni
the fashion deity who presided over the 1980s and 1990s like a colossus
Gianni once famously said: "If I was to marry
Our friendship was from when we were children
I can be in China or on the moon; we'll still speak one hundred times a day."
Gianni's influence over Donatella was all-pervasive
"Gianni brought a friend of his to the house and he was a hairdresser
He put in a few highlights but nobody noticed." With a predilection for a less-than-demure appearance clearly already established
I want it to be subtle.' But I wanted to do it properly
so I kept adding to it and adding to it..."
while Gianni was making a name for himself in Milan
Donatella studied literature at university in Florence
"My mother didn't want me to be in fashion," she says today
then travelled to Milan at weekends to help out in her brother's studio
when she was already designing accessories for the Versace label
but Donatella has said: "We are civilised people," and they maintain a sense of family
during the 1980s that the Versace label rose to worldwide prominence
The heady mix of black leather and metal mesh
the blinding colour and skin-tight fit of Gianni Versace's clothing encapsulated that era perfectly
Donatella wore the clothes and lived the life to the full
The enduring image of the label's allure is that
after the release of George Michael's "Freedom"
all of whom appeared in the video that accompanied the single
lip-synching the lyrics to a booming soundtrack
The high-octane glamour and open flaunting of wealth and fame that had become synonymous with the Versace name had reached its peak
criticising him openly when she thought it was needed
while he dreamt up ever more elaborate and scene-stealing collections
Her retort is typically feisty: "This is not very amusing." She knew then - as she does now - that she meant rather more to her brother than that
Gianni Versace collected art; Donatella preferred diamonds
in his habits; she partied with their friends until dawn
He mixed with painters; she courted rock stars
I also like to share good times with my friends
but as soon as he was sure that people around him were having a good time
He wanted to know everything about my world; who I was seeing
And I wanted to know everything about his; what he was reading
the gilded existence that brother and sister shared came to an abrupt end when Gianni Versace was shot dead at the door of his Miami mansion
Half of the company that bore his name was left to Donatella's daughter Allegra
30 per cent to Santo and 20 per cent to Donatella
"I want to leave everything to your daughter," Gianni once told Donatella
"because I want to make sure you take care of her well."
Although Santo had always looked after the business side of things
it was Donatella who was forced into the spotlight as designer and figurehead of one of the most famous fashion labels in the world
Her first collection won favourable reviews
but as she is the first to admit: "Whether they were good or bad
I knew people would forgive me everything." The fashion industry is not noted for its loyalty
and by the time the new millennium dawned it was widely considered that the Versace label had lost its lustre
star-spangled clothing was past its sell-by date
with fashion companies the world over being snapped up by luxury-goods conglomerates and expanding ever more voraciously into the money-spinning accessories and fragrances market
with its statement clothing and hugely extravagant display of personal largesse
by 2004 the company was facing a debt of $120m
Donatella's personal demons were no less catastrophic; in September that year she announced to the world that she was undergoing treatment for addiction to cocaine
perhaps for the first time since her brother's death
physically strong and happy enough to start work again and turn things around
The company has employed the services of a new chief executive
the bespectacled and highly businesslike (read determinedly un-Versace) Giancarlo Di Risio
Di Risio worked with Versace 20 years ago and has a more profound understanding of the nature of this particular business and the personalities involved than most people
included forthcoming expansion into the Far East
remodelling the interiors of Versace stores
and selling off at least some of the family's assets
his house in uptown New York and part of his precious art collection
although Donatella insisted on keeping his favourites
contemporary nature of the clothes themselves
that the still body-conscious and status-driven but less obviously showy aesthetic that Donatella Versace directs today is likely to give the likes of Gucci
If she herself had to sum up the new-look Versace
for which the label is again receiving its fair share of acclaim
Donatella Versace would say that the clothes are "less decorative [with] more focus on cut and proportion
they don't just wear clothes to look at themselves in the mirror
we still have to get out of it to walk to the school gates."
The company's Milan HQ announced last week that the Versace Group
The six-month period to June this year showed consolidated revenues of €148m (about £100m) and a return to profit before tax of about €2m
"that a lot of my partying life was really a reaction to my sadness
there are a lot of very good things about my life - but the sadness was very strong
I felt frightened and vulnerable and insecure and having to live all that out in public was the most terrible part
When I do something important I always think [she looks up to the heavens and smiles]
'What would you think about this?' Sometimes
ensues before Versace departs to paint the town red
this time in the presence of Nicole Kidman
taking a break from studying drama in the US to accompany her mother at this pivotal point in her career
"Allegra has a lot of shares in the company," says Donatella Versace as our interview draws to a close
"She doesn't have to design but when you inherit a patrimony like that..
"People are always surprised when they spend time with my children by how normal they are

Afonso Henriques Stadium in Guimarães
will be a cauldron of noise and colour tonight
Having resuscitated their fading World Cup hopes courtesy of a 3-0 victory over Hungary and Sweden's slip-up to Denmark
Portugal are everyone's favourites to cement second place in Group One to earn another crack at qualification to next year's finals in South Africa
Malta will be on a damage limitation mission in the hope of ending an otherwise disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign on a dignified note
are wary of the prospect of taking on a fired-up Portugal but the players in John Buttigieg's squad can do a lot worse than heed the advice of Gilbert Agius
"My philosophy is that you should look at the last group match and try to improve on it," Agius told The Times
"Our last game was the home qualifier against Sweden which we only lost 1-0
We should strive to build on our performance against the Swedes when we play Portugal."
Agius is bracing himself for a flat-out assault from Portugal
"Portugal will go all out to make sure of victory as early as possible," Agius said
"They stormed into Hungary last Saturday and went 1-0 up inside the opening minute
A full house will spur Portugal to attack us from the outset in search of an early goal."
the most capped player in the squad with 118 appearances
has been involved in many high-pressure internationals
The Valletta talisman stressed the importance of concentration and tactical cohesion
we have nothing to lose," Agius claimed
"It's imperative that we are fully concentrated
keep our tactical shape and show resilience
If we succeed in preventing Portugal from scoring an early goal
they may start to rush things and our confidence would grow the longer the game goes."

Afonso Henriques Stadium yesterday evening
Coach Buttigieg is unlikely to make sweeping changes from the team that started last month's 1-0 defeat to Sweden
Brian Said is expected to receive the all-clear to play as the veteran defender has almost fully recuperated from the back injury he suffered in the initial stages of the 2-1 defeat to Angola in a friendly on Saturday
Kenneth Scicluna appears to have the edge over Jonathan Caruana for the other centre-half role
Manny Muscat is a certainty to start at right-back and Ian Azzopardi at left-back
Jamie Pace and Agius are in line to resume their partnership in central midfield but John Hutchinson is also pushing hard for a first-team slot
Shaun Bajada (left) and Roderick Briffa (right) are the two leading contenders for the wide midfield roles with Andrew Cohen poised to be deployed behind lone striker Michael Mifsud
Malta are under no illusion about the size of the task to try and nullify the attacking threat posed by the likes of Simao
they will not have to worry about countering arguably the best player in the world..
The Real Madrid star pulled out of the Portugal squad after aggravating an ankle injury in the early stages of Saturday's win over Hungary
Agius acknowledged that Ronaldo's absence is a slight boost for Malta but pointed out that Portugal are not a one-man band
"They will surely fill the void left by Ronaldo but without him
Portugal will lose that extra touch of flair," Agius said
"Ronaldo was also absent when we played in Malta but they were still superior and beat us 4-0
would relish the chance to be on the same pitch with a player of Ronaldo's calibre
his absence removes a massive threat for us because everyone knows that Ronaldo is a great ball player and can be lethal in deadball situations."
Tonight's match marks the end of another qualifying campaign for Malta
Agius is justifiably delighted that he has retained his status as key component of the national team
judging by his fine performances in the last few months
this qualifier is unlikely to be his last in a Malta shirt
"As long as I'm physically fit and the coaches deem that I can still contribute to the national team
"My aim is to prolong my international career but that doesn't depend solely on me
We have a new national coach and maybe he has different ideas
"I think that my performances in the last few matches have been satisfactory but it's up to the coach to judge and choose the players
I will always respect his decisions."
Agius is only five games away from surpassing David Carabott's record of 122 caps for Malta
The Malta captain makes no bones about his ambition to emulate that feat
"It (Carabott's record) is a target," Agius admitted
"My goal is to equal and possibly surpass that number of caps for the national team."
