There are a few names that pop into my head when I think of the sport of BMX and its legends. Besides Gary Turner, Bob Haro is one of the first to pop into my noggin. And he’s not done yet. Recently, he announced a new frameset for his brand, IKONIX Bikes. It’s called the FS1
and it looks to be a modern take on a Haro freestyle frame
The frame and fork are limited to a run of 100 units
You can even pick what serial number you want between 1 and 100
There will be a 50% deposit needed to reserve the number you want
As long as it’s not number 1 through 16
So if you have a certain number you want to nail down
Did you know that Bob Haro was one of the stunt riders in the iconic BMX chase scene in the movie E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial? No? Well, it’s pretty cool. Check it out HERE
let’s talk about IKONIX Bikes before jumping into the details of the FS1
and arguably the inventor of BMX Flatland Freestyle
IKONIX combines Bob’s innovative spirit and long-time experience to deliver premium bicycles and accessories
IKONIX aims to provide a product that will stand up to the performance needs of today’s riders
The launch of the FS1 frameset marks the beginning of IKONIX Bikes
and they have a full lineup of BMX products
including more IKONIX bikes and apparel that is set to be released this Summer
and each will be built with 100% chromoly steel
The frame features signature hydroformed down and fork tubes
Bob says it’s “an homage to my first freestyle bike but fully modern.”
The first 100 frames will be numbered with a special signature plaque
The FS1s are supposed to ship “no later than August 15
when you will be charged the remaining balance
You will receive regular updates on the production of your FS1

“The frame and fork are limited to a run of 100 units” “The first 100 frames will be numbered with a special signature plaque” huh
Put in Rad then BMX Bandits and dust off the Hutch
The first GT fork from the ‘s’ frame had internal routing just like that
then they changed to the standard loop/ring to hold the cable
probably because forks cracked exactly at the opening
..I do not see why there is an indent at the rear dropout
Someone may have a nut / washer that does not fit perfectly there and if you are using pegs that indent means less support
..Are tapered headtubes a thing in freestyle BMX now
Looks to be tapered or reinforced externally only
For of those left that aren’t totally crippled from hucking early 90s rolling battle hammers this would be nice piece
New schoolers wouldn’t ride this bike
Nice as original an Haro with pristine padset or the saddle off Nicole Kidmans bike in bmx bandits…
We all have are tasts this however wouldn’t be mine

Haro's new (and first?) road bike surprised us
and its not only because of that wild teal paint scheme
Rarely did I meet someone for whom this Haro Rivette road bike didn’t elicit a reaction
Most of that is down to the paint scheme, which is so different from just anything else out there that it seemingly compelled people to tell me their thoughts. Riding the Rivette in this paint scheme felt like an act of defiance. Only a few folks seemed to dig the paint scheme, and they all seemed to have fond memories of Haro’s peak decades ago
I’m not sure anyone expected the company most associated with mag wheels and chromed BMX frames from the 80s to come out with a new road bike, much less a new gravel bike to match
I think this Rivette is better than it has any right to be
perhaps the defining characteristic of the Haro Rivette road bike isn’t necessarily how it rides
or the value for money in this build especially
I think it’s the name on the downtube that works its darndest to define this latest road bike
I’m not sure anyone else would do that paint scheme.”
this bike is more than the name on the downtube
Haro says that the Rivette was designed completely from the ground up using the expertise of its road product director, Lasse Norman Leth (nee Norman Hansen)
There are some serious accolades behind the name
as a multi-time Olympic track cycling medalist and pro cyclist up until recently
You don’t need to be an Olympian to design a bike
but it certainly gives it some credibility
with the paint ensuring the bike looks far from generic
The head tube doesn’t have the narrowness of many a modern race road bike
and while the fork has a capped end hiding the dropout
A look at the downtube reveals a fairly big downtube
taking advantage of that T47 threaded bottom bracket area
Take a look behind that and the chain stays are similarly beefy to boot
It all looks quite impressive from first glance
A closer look reveals some interesting touches
The area that the seat post wedge uses to clamp against the seat post is smaller than I would like
and the M5 bolt it uses might encourage some overtorquing of the wedge itself
Bar widths seem properly modern for folks looking for a fast road bike
going narrower than you’d think in just about every size
And tire widths are wider than you’d think too
While the drive side of the front dropout is covered and hid away
there’s a SRAM Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH)
a somewhat uncommon choice on road bikes with chainstays as short as this
It should prove to offer simple derailleur hanger replacement at local bike shops
Haro calls this version of the Rivette the ‘Top Shelf’, which nets a Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 drivetrain, Vision Metron 45 SL wheels, a Blktec one-piece carbon bar and stem, a top-end Selle San Marco saddle, and a pair of 30 mm wide Vittoria Corsa Pro Control tires
Its all befitting a bike called the Top Shelf
so long as you’re looking for something that leans toward being a racier road bike
The Rivette is defined by its long front end
When paired with the 62 to 58 cm trail figures across sizes
the Rivette geo chart promises handling that isn’t quite as razor-sharp as a race bike
That longer front center is paired with relatively short 408 mm chainstay figures
easily one of the shortest chainstay lengths of any bike with a SRAM Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH)
Keeping it short should result in a bike that feels responsive under pedaling
If you dig riding with a low setback or zero-setback seat post
you’ll probably love the geometry of this Rivette
Other things of note here are that Haro offers the Rivette in six sizes (from 48 cm to 61 cm)
You’ll likely need to consider sizing down
as the 51 cm bike seen here was decidedly on the big side of things compared to other bikes in that size
The pick of the bunch has to be the Rivette Carbon 3
with its 105 Di2 drivetrain and carbon wheels
It uses the same frame as the other models but brings in a two-piece handlebar and stem
and RED models still fill the spec sheet for the price
they don’t stick out quite as much as the 105 Di2-equipped bike
It is worth noting that while the Rivette Carbon 1 and Rivette Carbon 2 use a compact 50-34t chainring and 11-34T cassette combo
the Rivette Top Shelf and Rivette LTD bikes use decidedly racier gearing
but a concession that the user base is a bit different between the build kits
I don’t think the Haro Rivette is at the same level as the best road bikes out there
It doesn’t quite have the balanced smoothness of a Cannondale Supersix Evo or Trek Madone 8
It’s not quite as light as the Specialized Tarmac
and it doesn’t have that same endless feeling of speed that the likes of a Canyon Aeroad has
It checks just about every box you can think of on a spec sheet
and the bike itself feels generally ready for anything on the road
I feel like the reason one chooses the Rivette over the competition is its value for money
There’s nothing lacking on this Dura-Ace-equipped bike
but even the 105 Di2-equipped bike has about everything one could want from a road bike
An equivalent build from the big brands is more expensive
and the same goes for the Canyon Aeroad and Ultimate
both of which cost more and have alloy wheels rather than carbon
I don’t think the Rivette has any one standout characteristic
I mean that in the best way possible; it’s just very well-rounded
There’s hardly any perceivable flex when riding
and the classic “push your foot against the pedals” test for bottom bracket stiffness shows the frame to be surprisingly stout
If you’re heavier-set or you dig a particularly stiff frame
I wouldn’t call the bike necessarily uncomfortable as a result of its stiffness
There’s not a ton of smoothness in the bars or the seat post
Haro’s decision to spec a 30 mm wide tire front and rear is a great mix for this bike
It balances out that stiffness with good small bump compliance
We suspect more road bikes in the near future will adopt 30 mm tires
What surprises about this bike is how the longer front center seems to affect the bike in the real world
The long front center results in a bike means the front wheel feels at its best the faster it goes; there’s lots of stability here but it doesn’t quite have the turn-in of the race road bikes out there
It also means the bike really feels at its best on long
where it feels quite stable and unbothered by cracks in the road
I didn’t find it so long that it couldn’t corner at speed
I think this bike’s handling is better suited for a road racing-type situation
but I wouldn’t hesitate to race in a criterium with it
I suspect you’ll appreciate how the Rivette handles
I’m a fan of the Blktec one-piece carbon bar here
I like the backsweep of the tops which felt natural and a comfortable place to be on an extended climb
The drops could perhaps a bit more comfort
but I dig the out sweep and flare in the lower area
Haro specs a 38 cm wide bar on my size 51 cm bike
which is bang on for what most folks looking at this build will want
I found the seat post needed the max torque figure as well as a huge helping of carbon paste to prevent it from creaking
The paint felt rough in a couple of small places
but that’s not the first time I’ve experienced that on a modern bike
The computer mount–a universal shape with tons of adjustability to its length–was more than twice the weight of the computer mounts found on the Black inc Aero Barstem and Roval Rapide Cockpit
The same goes for the Selle San Marco Shortfit Carbon FX saddle
and it happens to work well with the bars I like to use
there isn’t much to complain about here so long as you dig the paint scheme
the Rivette is also available in a gold and black color with a huge block text Haro logo
I’m not sure how much value there is in the Haro name
at least for the people who I think would really dig the core elements of this bike
conquering BMX with the first freestyle BMX frame
Bike companies tend toward muted and simple schemes because that’s what sells on the floor
I did find a few people with whom this bike seemed to click
They were around for Haro’s hayday and they rode the fast race road bikes that are popular today
The Rivette seemed to really appeal to them
but only once I showed them the more muted rose gold and black colorway
Haro says it’s planning an alloy version of this bike as well as a time trial bike in an effort to really get back into racing
Here’s to hoping Haro can find a new group of people the brand really resonates with
The question I regularly came away from with the Haro Rivette is why I would want to spend anything more
The bike might lack the ultimate polish of the best road bikes out there
This Dura-Ace build feels like great value for money
as it checks every box I could want from a road bike in 2024
I really think the things I liked the most about this bike–its excellent chassis stiffness
the stable handling–are all preserved in the 105 Di2 bike
I think I’d spend more because I want a brand I resonate with
the bike you ride can be a vanity play at some level
I suspect I’d want a brand that feels like it comes closer to my values on the bike
Regardless of how you feel about the brand

The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope observed Herbig-Haro 49/50, an outflow from a nearby still-forming star, in high-resolution near- and mid-infrared light with the NIRCam and MIRI instruments
provide detailed clues about how young stars form and how their jet activity affects the environment around them
A chance alignment in this direction of the sky provides a beautiful juxtaposition of this nearby Herbig-Haro object (located within our Milky Way) with a more distant
Protostars are young stars in the process of formation that generally launch narrow jets of material
These jets move through the surrounding environment
in some cases extending to large distances away from the protostar
Like the water wake generated by a speeding boat
the arcs in this image are created by the fast-moving jet slamming into surrounding dust and gas
This ambient material is compressed and heats up
then cools by emitting light at visible and infrared wavelengths
the infrared light captured here by Webb highlights molecular hydrogen and carbon monoxide
The galaxy that appears by happenstance at the tip of Herbig-Haro 49/50 is a much more distant spiral galaxy
It has a prominent central bulge represented in blue that shows the location of older stars
It also displays hints of 'side lobes,' suggesting that this could be a barred-spiral galaxy
Reddish clumps within the spiral arms show the locations of warm dust and groups of forming stars
In the image background there are many more galaxies at further distances
including galaxies that shine through the diffuse infrared glow of the nearby Herbig-Haro object
[Image description: Angled from the upper left corner to the lower right corner of the image is a conical shaped orange-red cloud known at Herbig-Haro 49/50
This feature takes up about three-fourths of the length of this angle
The upper left end of this feature has a translucent
At this same location there is a background spiral shaped galaxy with a concentrated blue center that fades outwards to blend in with red spiral arms
The conical feature widens slightly from the rounded end at the upper right down to the lower right
speckled with some white stars and smaller

LAS VEGAS (BRAIN) — A year after announcing an expanded lineup that goes beyond its BMX roots
fleshing out its product line with new aluminum-framed full suspension mountain bikes last year and new e-bikes and other adult models being introduced at Sea Otter next month
At the CABDA West trade show that opened here Wednesday
Haro is showing some new models while also promoting a program that locks in pre-tariff pricing on its Shredder coaster-brake juvenile bikes for retailers who commit before the end of March
Haro, which is about 48 years old, began its transition about 24 months ago, adding new staff as it expanded its product line
all at a time when the retail bike industry has been struggling with oversupply and declining margins
"We joke that nobody likes pushing a boulder uphill more than Haro Bikes," said James Ayres, who has been with Haro since 2007 and was promoted to director of North American sales in 2023
Ayres said Haro has slowly added back some U.S
dealers who left the brand during the pandemic
either new or returning to the brand," Ayres said
The brand also has been adding new dealers in Europe as its expanded its line
Haro introduced a line of high-end carbon road and gravel bikes last year
which it supports in part by sponsoring domestic road racing athletes and teams
"The goal was to fill in the range to be a complete supplier at the performance level," Haro's Chief Marketing Officer Megan Tompkins told BRAIN in an interview in early March
one of the things that we discovered very quickly was that we needed to show how legitimate we were in that category," Tompkins added
"So we've put a lot of emphasis on bringing on some really legit teams across the country."
the BMX community grew concerned the brand was moving away from its roots
But the company said it remains committed to BMX and plans a major refresh of its BMX line this July
"It was never in place of what we've internally referred to as 'Haro 1.0,'" said Ayres
the goal with this entire initiative that we've embarked on over the last 24 months was solely to become a more well-rounded line
To be a player in categories where we had never played before
but not to forsake anything that we've built a foundation on."
to be hit with increased tariffs this year
which will mean increased wholesale pricing
The company is moving some more production out of China to Malaysia and Taiwan but also offering retailers the opportunity to lock in wholesale pricing on Shredders at pre-tariff pricing if they commit to a program by the end of March
we're going to have to pass some of this tariff burden along to the retailer and ultimately along to the end user," said Ayres
'pre-book,' because that has become a dirty word in the industry right now
'if you order now we will grandfather you in to pre-tariff wholesale pricing,'" he said
He said the program offers up to keystone margins on "bread-and-butter" bikes
It allows retailers to structure shipments between April 1 and Sept
allowing them to set up for the holiday season at the current pricing
He said the program will help dealers combat some expected consumer sticker shock later this year
"We see these insane deals finally slowly starting to dry up (across the industry) and then when you mix in this tariff implication
we're really going to be telling consumers
but now you're paying 25 or 30% more for it then you would have a year ago ..
I feel like there's going to be a bit of a system shock that the general public is going to go through ..
Haro's Shredder Margin Stretcher program shows wholesale pricing and MSRPs increasing from 9-17% on April 1
The new pricing structure puts dealer margin at about 42% on these models
while locking in the current pricing and selling at the new MSRP would produce margins of 47-50%

Shankman started a new venture with a familiar premise
This story was originally published on April 29
We’re republishing it as part of our countdown of top stories of the year
When Peter Shankman founded Help a Reporter Out (HARO) in 2007
he had a simple concept: connect reporters on deadlines with sources who could
ad-supported email that helped countless reporters and PR pros collaborate on stories
there was a bakery two seconds from bankruptcy in the Midwest somewhere,” Shankman recalled
“And they answered a query that went up in the Wall Street Journal
Shankman sold HARO to Vocus in 2010, which in turn was acquired by Cision. Earlier this year, Cision folded the classic HARO into Connectively
Cision did not respond to a request for comment about changes to the product
raise a glass and say goodbye to what it was,” he said of the email
He never anticipated receiving more than 2,000 replies
many of them urging him to bring back HARO in his own style
Then his fate was sealed when his girlfriend came up with the perfect name: HERO, or Help Every Reporter Out
“I’ll never forgive her for this,” he joked
Shankman wants you to know that he never wanted to revive HARO
“On the premise that you can’t go home again,” he said wistfully
He’s relaunched his daily emails under the HERO banner
He attributes that success to both the simplicity of the idea — “email is the killer app and always has been” — and the trust that his audience has in him
“People know me well enough or trust me to know that I’m not going to start charging,” Shankman said
“I’m not going to start calling you 10 times a day and ask you to buy other services
And that’s all I’ve ever done.”
If people feel inclined to help, he does request donations to Best Friends Animal Society or The NYC Mayor’s Alliance for Animals
But for all practical intents and purposes
But Shankman said he has already received several sponsorship offers
he said he’s learned a lot in the 14 years since he sold HARO
the attraction of selling a company for the sake of selling a company making a few bucks isn’t as strong,” he said
he wants it to be one that has a place for him to join and grow
He’s currently working on tools to limit people who might exploit HERO to get free products while preserving access to journalists of all stripes
it’s clear that this is a labor of love for him
who still speaks optimistically about trying to go home again
if I come back and I can help make journalism and public relations a more symbiotic and beneficial relationship for both

Using the NIRCam and MIRI instruments onboard the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers have produced a high-resolution image of Herbig-Haro object 49/50 (HH 49/50)
which is located about 630 light-years away in the constellation of Chamaeleon
Webb observed Herbig-Haro 49/50 in high-resolution near- and mid-infrared light with the NIRCam and MIRI instruments
Herbig-Haro objects are small bright patches of nebulosity associated with protostars in star-forming regions
These structures were first observed in the 19th century by the American astronomer Sherburne Wesley Burnham
but were not recognized as being a distinct type of emission nebula until the 1940s
The first astronomers to study them in detail were George Herbig and Guillermo Haro
Herbig-Haro objects are formed under very specific circumstances — when hot gas ejected by a newborn star collides with the gas and dust around it at speeds of up to 250,000 kmh (155,000 mph)
the basic configuration is usually the same: twin jets of heated gas
ejected in opposite directions from a forming star
“When NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope observed it in 2006
scientists nicknamed HH 49/50 the Cosmic Tornado for its helical appearance
but they were uncertain about the nature of the fuzzy object at the tip of the ‘tornado’,” said Webb astronomers in a statement
Webb provides a different visual impression of HH 49/50 by revealing fine features of the shocked regions in the outflow
uncovering the fuzzy object to be a distant spiral galaxy
and displaying a sea of distant background galaxies.”
HH 49/50 is part of the Chamaeleon I Cloud complex
one of the nearest active star-forming regions
“This cloud complex is likely similar to the environment that our Sun formed in,” the astronomers said
“Past observations of this region show that the HH 49/50 outflow is moving away from us at speeds of 100-300 km per second and is just one feature of a larger outflow.”
“Webb’s NIRCam and MIRI observations of HH 49/50 trace the location of glowing hydrogen molecules
as the protostellar jet slams into the region.”
The new Webb observations probe details on small spatial scales that will help astronomers to model the properties of the jet and understand how it is affecting the surrounding material
similar to a water wake created by a speeding boat
point back to the source of this outflow,” the researchers said
scientists suspect that a protostar known as Cederblad 110 IRS4 is a plausible driver of the jet activity.”
“Located roughly 1.5 light-years away from HH 49/50
“Class I protostars are young objects (tens of thousands to a million years old) in the prime time of gaining mass.”
“They usually have a discernible disk of material surrounding it that is still falling onto the protostar
“Scientists recently used Webb’s NIRCam and MIRI observations to study this protostar and obtain an inventory of the icy composition of its environment.”
“These detailed Webb images of the arcs in HH 49/50 can more precisely pinpoint the direction to the jet source
but not every arc points back in the same direction.”
there is an interesting outcrop feature (at the top right of the main outflow) which could be another chance superposition of a different outflow
related to the slow precession of the intermittent jet source.”
this feature could be a result of the main outflow breaking apart.”
“The galaxy that appears by happenstance at the tip of HH 49/50 is a much more distant
“It has a prominent central bulge represented in blue that shows the location of older stars.”
“The bulge also shows hints of side lobes suggesting that this could be a barred-spiral galaxy.”
“Reddish clumps within the spiral arms show the locations of warm dust and groups of forming stars.”
“The galaxy even displays evacuated bubbles in these dusty regions
similar to nearby galaxies observed by Webb as part of the PHANGS program.”
“Webb has captured these two unassociated objects in a lucky alignment.”
the edge of HH 49/50 will move outwards and eventually appear to cover up the distant galaxy.”

I’d like to offer some points of clarification regarding the recent Recorder article
“Commission calls for public hearing on dam” (April 8)
although I am a retired fish biologist/scientist emeritus with the USGS
I am currently a volunteer consultant for the Connecticut River Conservancy (CRC) for their dam removal projects
Greenfield Historical Commission member Tim Blagg’s original request to me was for evidence of historic fisheries of the Green River
not necessarily “evidence of [migratory] fish species going up the Green River.” There is plenty of evidence from agency surveys of sea lamprey and American eel ascending the Green River
and that American shad and probably blueback herring once utilized the Green River in the past (and may still do so now)
Blagg’s specific question regarded historical evidence of human utilization of those fish species (the “fisheries”)
There is some evidence of indigenous pre-contact fishing sites and post-contact artisanal fisheries on the Green River
Peter Thomas has supplied additional information on post-contact fisheries to Mr
Blagg and myself; as an archaeologist and historian
Thomas has expertise and resources that allowed him to dig a little deeper than I was able to
It is the Historic Commission’s charge to weigh aspects of historical context and importance of the Green River dams
By involving the commission early in the development of the project
CRC will gain their input and collaboration on ways to develop a meaningful historic commemoration of the dams for the education and enjoyment of the community

How about some limited edition news from the crëw at Haro Bikes? Ok, then. These new limited finishes started when they were in the R&D phase of development for the new Haro Greer enduro and Daley all mountain bikes
The Greer Raw LTD and Daley Raw LTD versions came about after an overwhelmingly positive response to the raw finish of the prototypes
suggesting the finish should go into production
The finish consists of an anodized raw finish over a burnished alloy surface
It also includes a clean and sharp etched logo
finish is available on the Greer Raw LTD 1 and 2
While these new LTD versions of the Greer and Daley use the same geometry as the earlier versions
they do bring with them a premium build with FOX suspension
Check out the details on these sexy beasts at the link below

“HH 30 is an example of where this outflowing gas takes the form of a narrow jet,” the astronomers said
“The source star is located on one end of the jet
hidden behind an edge-on protoplanetary disk that the star is illuminating.”
the researchers investigate the HH 30 object in great detail
They also analyzed data from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA)
“The long-wavelength data from ALMA trace the location of millimeter-sized dust grains
which are found in a narrow region in the central plane of the disk,” they said
“The shorter-wavelength infrared data from Webb reveal the distribution of smaller dust grains.”
“These grains are only one millionth of a meter across — about the size of a single bacterium.”
“While the large dust grains are concentrated in the densest parts of the disk
the small grains are much more widespread.”
“Combined with the keen radio-wavelength eyes of ALMA
the Webb observations show that large dust grains must migrate within the disk and settle in a thin layer,” they added
dense layer of dust is an important stage in the process of planet formation.”
dust grains clump together to form pebbles and eventually planets themselves.”
“In addition to the behavior of dust grains
and ALMA images reveal several distinct structures that are nested within one another.”
“A high-velocity jet of gas emerges at a 90-degree angle from the narrow central disk.”
“Enclosing the conical outflow is a wide nebula that reflects the light from the young star that is embedded within the disk.”
these data reveal HH 30 to be a dynamic place
where tiny dust grains and massive jets alike play a role in the formation of new planets.”
The findings will be publlished in the Astrophysical Journal.

Undated handout photo of Lois Anne Haro, who was kidnapped, raped and murdered in 1988. (Courtesy of Tony Haro) Tony Haro had just gotten home on a cool October evening in 1988 and found a note from his wife, Lois Anne Haro, saying she had left around 7 p.m. for the Pasadena Plaza to buy a gift for a friend’s baby shower the next day. The note instructed her husband not to put the ice cream back in the fridge; she was going to be right back to make an ice cream pie.
But the tub had melted completely. It was 9 p.m.
The melted ice cream was the first in a flood of traumatic recollections that recently washed over Tony as he sat in the front row of a courtroom gallery for the Los Angeles Superior Court retrial of Ronald Anthony Jones, one of the men who had been convicted of kidnapping, raping and murdering his wife nearly 36 years ago.
Jones and his co-conspirator, Marvin Trone, abducted Lois from the mall, then drove her around Pasadena, sexually assaulting her repeatedly in her car before taking her to a secluded area by the freeway and shooting her once in the head, killing her.
Jones was arrested the next day after he was spotted driving Lois’ car, according to trial testimony. He was found with a bullet in his jacket pocket similar in caliber to the one Lois was shot with and had gunpowder on his hands, prosecutors said. He had Lois’ credit cards, pocketbook and wallet at his house. His semen was found on her clothing at the scene.
Undated handout image of Tony and Lois Anne Haro. (Courtesy of Tony Haro) For more than three decades, Jones sat in prison for the crimes. He challenged his conviction in state courts, but his appeals were denied. But in 2021, his murder conviction was overturned by a federal judge who found that the 1991 trial was “incurably tainted by race-based discrimination” due to the prosecution’s exclusion of Black jurors.
The prosecution was able to get rid of 12 jurors without explanation. It used four of those to exclude the only eligible Black jurors.
Jones’ trial came as race relations in Los Angeles were reaching a boiling point. Jones and his co-conspirator were Black, and their victim, Lois, was white. Jones’ trial occurred just weeks after video of the Rodney King beating was released. One of the Black jurors who was removed from the pool by the prosecution even said she had a stepson who was in the car with King before his beating.
Thirty years after he was convicted, Jones’ case was reopened. But even his current defense attorney acknowledged Jones was far from innocent.
Jones, now 54, does not deny much of what he’s accused of. He admits to kidnapping, rape and participating in Haro’s murder.
“Mr. Jones has taken responsibility for every horrific, inhumane thing that he did when he was a stupid 19-year-old man in 1988,” said Jones’ attorney, Ilya Alekseyeff, in her closing arguments to jurors Thursday.
But what he does not admit to is pulling the trigger.
At the heart of the two-week trial was the small but key detail that led to his death sentence after his conviction in 1991. Jones disputed that he was the triggerman that night, and he denied that he intended throughout the abduction to kill Haro.
“They really don’t have a case. They don’t have evidence Mr. Jones is the one who killed Ms. Haro,” Alekseyeff told jurors.
California
But Caryl Chessman’s death penalty conviction dominated the debate about capital punishment for years
Jones was asking the jury to find him not to have been the triggerman — one of the special circumstances allegations against him
his sentence could be reduced from capital punishment to imprisonment for 25 years to life
“It’s a seldom seen yet sometimes highly persuasive tactic for [the] defense to admit almost all culpability,” said Josh Ritter
a defense attorney in Los Angeles not involved in the case
“The hope is that admitting culpability will garner some trustworthiness with the jurors
and that they will essentially buy into the defense theory that while he admits criminal culpability
it isn’t as far as the prosecution is alleging.”
Ritter noted that the distinction Jones’ attorney was trying to make for the jury could lead to a considerably different sentence
If Jones is not convicted of the special circumstances for being the triggerman
If the special circumstances are found to be true
they are playing with house money to an extent
He’s just looking for an opportunity to one day see the outside of the prison,” Ritter said
The prosecution maintained it had proof that Jones was the shooter
Jones denied being the shooter and claimed he was holding the gun for his accomplice
He also said the gunpowder found on his hands could have been from a BB gun
His attorney told jurors during closing arguments that the admission was a lie
Jones was simply telling them exactly what they wanted to hear,” Alekseyeff said
“The prosecution did not rule out Trone as the killer.”
they returned with a verdict: guilty of first-degree murder with four special circumstances
including an enhancement of principal armed with a gun
But it could not agree on whether he was the one who shot Lois Haro
when he was found to be the shooter and sentenced to death
he faces a mandatory sentence of life without the possibility of parole
That’s the same sentence Trone received in 1992 after being found guilty of murder, robbery and sexual assault with special circumstances.
“Justice has finally been served for Lois Haro and her family. This verdict is a crucial step in bringing closure to a case that has weighed heavily on the hearts of her loved ones and our community for more than three decades,” Dist. Atty George Gascón said.
For his part, Tony Haro just wanted to go home.
Tony Haro, whose wife, Lois Anne Haro, was murdered in 1988 after being abducted from a mall in Pasadena. (Ringo Chiu / For The Times) He lives in Grants Pass, Ore., where he works as a therapist, focusing on trauma and grief. He and Lois did not have kids together, and Haro is now remarried and has two adult daughters.
“Lois’ murder turned my life upside down. The trials of Jones and Trone in the 1990s were just excruciating. It was devastating. It was hard to function,” he said while awaiting the verdict.
The retrial of Jones was different, but it still brought up all his past pain.
“I know trauma lives in your body; my body just remembers everything. So when I’m in there and the rest of the family too, we all get triggered. This is just replaying everything that happened,” he said.
When the jury found Jones guilty of first-degree murder, Haro said, Jones’ family members went up to him in the courthouse and apologized for the loss of Lois and for having to endure another trial.
“I’m very relieved,” he said, “and hope I never have go through this again in my lifetime.”

I guess it’s about time I let you know what my first impressions are of Haro Bike’s new Saguaro 1 hardtail mountain bike
Well, I like it… a lot. I’m having a really fun time on this bike. Quick confession, I’ve been “almost” exclusively riding rigid mountain bikes for close to ten years. I say almost because from 2018 through 2020 I did enjoy my RSD Middle Child until I got the itch during the pandemic to sell it and build something different
and geometry that is both comfortable and aggressive at the same time
I’ve made a few small component upgrades
When I choose to ride a bike with suspension
my choices always seem to turn to hardtails
It means a little more concentration on the trail
as picking your line on a descent becomes a little more important
This makes it fun for me the same way a fully rigid MTB would
Although this FOX fork that’s spec’d on the Saguaro does make it more comfortable while doing it
The Haro Saguaro hardtails come in three spec levels – Saguaro 3
the 2 retails for $2399 and the 1 retails for $3999 (tested)
All of the bikes seem to have smart specs and are a good value for the money
The electronic SRAM GX Transmission 12-speed drivetrain was fairly easy to set up
It obviously won’t have any cables to replace or adjust
easy-to-set-up FOX fork adds to the bike’s simplicity
let’s go over a few more of the great components this bike was spec’d with
Even though this bike is spec’d really well
I’ve got this bike for a long-term review and will also use it to review other parts in the near and not-so-near future
The very first thing I replaced, before I even rode the bike were the Kenda Tires. I replaced them with a set of Teravail Kessels
in the 29×2.6 flavor with the “durable” tan wall casing
I think Tan walls always make a bike look better
The second thing I replaced was the saddle. I replaced it with one of my favorite “modern” saddles, the Ergon SM Pro Mens in the M/L size
I say “modern” because I usually ride the Brooks B17 exclusively… but the B17 won’t work well in this application
On to the grips. Although I am a big fan of just about everything WTB does, I didn’t care for the Wavelength grips that came stock on the Saguaro 1. Along with Ergon’s saddles, I am a big fan of their grips. I swapped in the Ergon GE1 Evo Factory in the Frozen Moss/Oil Slick color
I added a Spurcycle Original Bell to the cockpit as well
I need a bell on a lot of trails that I ride
there is no other bell on the market like this one
Lastly, the unsung heroes of all of the gear I use are my K-Edge computer mounts. They very rarely get mentioned and are always there doing what they are supposed to do, without a complaint or issue. So, of course, I added my K-Edge Gravity Top Cap Mount
The colors are Metallic Green (tested) and Matte Mauve
I’ve found the first couple of rides on the Haro Saguaro 1 refreshingly familiar
it’s been a while since I’ve ridden a bike with a slack front end and decent front suspension
As someone who prefers to ride steel bikes
I found myself very conscious of the way the frame rode on the first few rides
I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t notice any overt harshness in the rear end
Although it’s early in the review period
there’s been none of that crazy harsh ride that I remember aluminum frames to dish out
the Saguaro 1 rides like you’d expect a hardtail would
I like the way this bike handles with the 29″ wheels
The FOX 36 Performance Elite fork helps a lot with that
that being said when compared to the 27.5 RSD Middle Child I had
I find the Saguaro 1 much more capable and nimble
there is a 1.5-mile descent that has a few chunky
rocky sections and the Saguaro 1 bulldozed right through it where I clocked 34.1 MPH….like buttah
it’s a hardtail and there were parts of the trail
the bike seemed to stay planted and stable
the bike never felt like it was going to bounce or skip offline
With the 210mm front rotor and the 180mm rear rotor
stopping power is on hand and very present
The levers have a quick reach adjustment by just twisting the dial right behind the lever
It reminded me of the kick-ass ol’ Avid Speed Dial Levers
Due to the reach and longer front end and bigger wheels
it seems to be a lil’ bit hard to pull the front end up over some obstacles
even though it’s on the heavier end of the spectrum at 34lbs
The terrain I am riding it on the most is around our new house up in the mountains
It’s very rocky at times with a lot of loose over hard pack
I still have yet to find a lot of places to ride here
I am excited to get it down the mountain on familiar trails
I know I haven’t talked about the electronic SRAM GX Transmission yet
and I don’t think I will until the full review
as it’s way too early for me to make a final judgment call
What I will say is that on the 3 or 4 rides I’ve done on the SRAM GX
I will say setting it up with the app was pretty neat
The shift pod is unnatrual and awkward to use
Maybe I could get used to it…again too early to tell
But we’ll dive into that after a bit longer on the product
I’m very excited to have this bike and to run it through its paces over the next few months
@hibye–just don’t charge the ‘transmission’ haha

Both of these bikes are named after two of Haro’s local trails and tested by team riders like Colin Varanyak
The Daley is named after a San Diego riding spot called Daley Ranch
It’s said to have as much climbing as it does descending
This seems to be a perfect fit for Daley’s balance of climbing and descending
and sporting 140mm rear and 150mm front travel
the Daley would be a great choice for an everyday MTB
Southern California trail called Greer Ranch
It sounds like the perfect proving ground for the mixed-wheel
Both the Greer and the Daley feature hydro-formed
double-butted aluminum frames and rear triangles
They both utilize internal routing and support UDH
The suspension platform is the tried and trued four-bar Horst link design with custom-tuned rear suspension for each spec level
Haro wants you to know that the alloy versions of these new full-suspension mountain bike offerings are paving the way for upcoming carbon and electric versions… being released next Spring

Great price point to get people into MTB and out riding bikes
now known as the Connectively Platform is being discontinued
it was a way to get attention and potentially links
from journalists and it is a topic we've covered in the past
Help a Reporter Out (HARO) was an online service for journalists to obtain feedback from the public
It enabled journalists to connect with experts in issues relevant to their reporting
It was founded in 2008 as a Facebook group and turned into a mailing list for journalists and bloggers
Now, on December 9, 2024, it will be closed down. The company posted a big FAQ over here about this
In 2014, there was some speculation that maybe Google was going after HARO links some how
Here is a screenshot of the email sent about this closer, it was posted by @sacha_vyzz:
Here is what Cision posted as to why it is closing down:
Everyone is asking if there are alternatives, I mean, I suspect so, just Google it. Some include one by the original founder of HARO named Sources of Sources and then there is JournoFinder.com

Astronomers have uncovered new insights into Herbig-Haro objects, small nebulae found in star-forming regions. These objects mark where gas from young stars heats up due to shockwaves. A prime example is HH 30, where gas flows out as a narrow jet from a star hidden behind an edge-on protoplanetary disc
Discovered early by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope
An international team used the Webb telescope to examine HH 30 closely
They could study the system’s disc in multiple wavelengths by combining data from Webb
and the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA)
ALMA’s long-wavelength data showed millimeter-sized dust grains in the disc’s central plane
Webb’s shorter-wavelength infrared data revealed smaller dust grains
aimed to understand dust evolution in discs like HH 30
The findings highlight that large dust grains migrate and settle in a thin layer
dust grains clump together to form pebbles and planets
and ALMA unveiled intricate structures within HH 30:
These findings highlight HH 30 as a dynamic environment where dust grains and gas jets contribute to new planet formation
This dynamic setting offers astronomers a unique opportunity to study the processes leading to planet formation

Even more baffling was the fuzzy object at its tip.
Scientists considered the fuzzy thing could be a nearby star.
The Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore
which operates the Webb and Hubble telescopes for NASA
said it turns out the objects aren't related at all but happen to be in the same line of sight.
"When peering out into space, we get a 2D view of a 3D universe," the institute said in a news release
images will capture objects that appear close to each other in the sky
but are actually at wildly different distances and are unassociated with each other."
Webb's penetrating infrared gaze has now revealed the true identity of the glow as a face-on
The bulge also seems to have side lobes, suggesting that this could be a barred spiral galaxy like the Milky Way.
The above video provides a fly-through visualization of the James Webb Space Telescope's view of Herbig-Haro 49/50
Bars — ribbons of stars and gas that cut across the core of a galaxy — form in spiral galaxies when the orbits of stars near the galaxy's center become erratic and stretched out
Bars grow as gravity collects more nearby stars
a large percentage of the stars within such a galaxy's nucleus get caught up in the bar.
As for the Harbig-Haro object, scientists believe its edge will eventually move outward and seem to cover up the galaxy, though that will take thousands of years to occur. The object is about 625 light-years from Earth in the constellation Chamaeleon
But not all of the arcs point in that direction after all
Another jet could be intersecting with Herbig-Haro 49/50 or the main jet might be breaking apart.
Astronomers hope the Webb observations will help them better understand how jets associated with young developing stars can affect their surroundings
Phantoms defenseman Conner de Haro retrieves the puck during the team's scrimmage on Friday in Boardman
Youngstown Phantoms defenseman Conner de Haro was a young up-and-comer focused on making the roster full-time
de Haro is one of the team’s most experienced players
and one of the few that have been here for each season that coach Ryan Ward has been at the helm
“It’s super exciting,” de Haro said
it’s great to be back in Youngstown and see all the fellas
so it’s just nice to be back and excited to get the season going.”
The defenseman became a regular in his second season with the Phantoms
getting his feet wet in the USHL and watching his team win a championship
all contributed to him taking that next step of growth as a player
“I think it just was a lot of it was from just gaining confidence in the league
and knowing I belonged (there) too,” de Haro said
“That’s the hardest thing when you’re a young guy
de Haro has taken on more responsibilities as one of the team’s elder statesmen
One of those is driving around the younger guys
“I have to drive around (Jack Hextall) and (Adam Benak) every day
so I kind of got to know them well,” de Haro said
and it’s nice to see the new faces and how excited they are to be here
“Obviously it’s an honor to be one of (the team leaders)
and I think whenever I was in their situation
it was always nice to be able to talk to those guys
so I’m just trying to help them out with whatever I can
and trying to get them feeling comfortable and just excited to be here.”
and cited current Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin as one of his favorite players to watch
“I really like Miro Heiskanen from the Dallas Stars
He’s a good defenseman,” de Haro said
I’ve watched a lot of Brady Skjei (now with Nashville)
it’s always cool to watch them play and see what they do.”
The team goal is ‘Clark Cup or Bust’
but de Haro is hoping he can be a major contributor toward that goal by taking another big leap in his development like he did this past year
I just want to take another step like last year
and I don’t want to plateau,” de Haro said
“I’ve just got to get better this year and hopefully produce more offensively
and then just continue what I was doing offensively this (past) year.”

Previous plans were filed for a 12-story apartment complex in 2019 and approved in late 2021. The structure would have offered 450 group housing units with shared amenities, ground-level retail, and parking. BAR Architects was responsible for the design
the 11-story apartment complex will contain about eight percent less floor area or 180,880 square feet
All 425 units will be designated as affordable
with the majority for households earning around 60% of the Area’s Median Income
The affordability will range from 30-80% AMI
the project qualifies as a minor modification to the Senate Bill 35 approval
The 0.62-acre parcel is a triangular corner lot facing De Haro Street and 16th Street. Future residents will live within a retail-rich low-density commercial design district near the San Francisco campus of the California College of the Arts and the Potrero Hill neighborhood
City records show the property sold in mid-2022 for $16.6 million
Building permits filed in August of 2021 estimate construction would cost around $75 million
Additional details have yet to be shared about the project
DM Development has yet to reply to a request for comment as of the time of publication

“why not bigger?” – because it doesn’t make financial sense
“and why no market rate?” – because there is no demand for market rate
though” – The existing buildings are still in place and occupied
More of Gavin Newsom and Scott Weiner follies
Also what exactly is 60% of household income
Kudos to all those who were involved in spite of opposition
Many more units need to be added elsewhere
Building height restrictions should only be for safety
No one should lack for housing because a community wants to call itself a historical district
History is important but many more new multifamily units are needed
just a whole foods and a couple restaurants down the street
And by taking down this building we will lose a 2 more eateries
more transit and more parking (because people do have cars
The 22 bus runs along this route every 6 mins and the sidewalks were all refreshed in 2019 which included boarding islands for the bus and more trees
This block is one of the few that didn’t get much of an upgrade because it’s basically just a parking lot fronting the street
More people will be able to support new retail
I do think the design is a bit boring and grey
but don’t foist this monstrosity on us
Plus every single one of the temporary tech workers that live here will have a car
inundating the neighborhood with parked cars
Too bad this thing can’t be built next door to Scott Wiener’s upscale condo or next to Gavin’s multi acre estate
Or Toni Atkin’s San Diego South Park historically designated neighborhood

City records show the property last sold in 2016 for $947,500
Johnston has been at the center of national news after illegally demolishing a home designed by one of the more significant modernist architects from the 20th Century
Twenty-three-year-old Arnold Robert Haro addressed his final words to the phone in his hand
I hope you guys turn this into a memecoin,” he said
(The coin has since lost 96 percent of its value.)
Speculation ran rampant on X that Haro had ended his life because he had lost money to a memecoin rugpull—a maneuver whereby somebody creates a new coin
then sells off their holdings in one swoop
WIRED was unable to confirm whether this had happened to Haro
but his friends have disputed the narrative
“It had nothing to do with crypto … It’s not what all these crypto nerds seem to think,” one of Haro’s friends
has described his death as the result of “his battle with depression.”
The incident captures in microcosm the race to the bottom in memecoin trading circles
where only the most heinous and morally bankrupt ideas are now rewarded with attention
cofounder of the Morph blockchain and venture partner at crypto VC firm Foresight Ventures
That equation was reversed with the arrival of Pump.Fun
a platform that makes it simple for anyone to launch a memecoin at no cost
many millions of memecoins have flooded the market
Pump.Fun spokesperson Troy Gravitt described Haro’s death as a “tragedy,” but explained that the coins made in his image
though “clearly in poor taste,” do not violate the platform’s terms of use
“There was no content associated with the token that would have identified it as either illicit or explicit,” says Gravitt
“Everyone assumes that crypto is where you come to become rich
I think it’s the exact opposite,” says Khan
“There are these layers of insiders … retail traders are always exit liquidity.” In other words
regular people buying into coins allows insiders to cash out at a profit
The new cultural prominence of highly volatile memecoins
which offer the prospect both of outsized gains and losses
is also likely to have compounded the risk for people predisposed to problem gambling or trading
“People have enormous capacity to make money very quickly
The appeal of making money rings so much louder than calls of danger,” says Benjamin Johnson
a PhD candidate at the University of Queensland specializing in the public health implications of digital technologies
“Adding to the attraction with memecoins is that you’ve got these online communities where people really congregate
It becomes an emotional attachment to these assets … It creates a perfect storm.”
“If you are really into day trading, it is definitely something that is likely to cause people mental stress or psychological distress,” says Atte Oksanen, a professor of psychology at Tampere University, who has conducted multiple studies on the mental health implications of crypto trading
The launch of US president Donald Trump’s memecoin in January pushed the fight for attention to new extremes
The inevitable effect has been that only the most depraved and provocative concepts—like the MistaFuccYou coin
based on a suicide—so much as register in the hive mind of memecoin traders
“The president of one of the most powerful countries in the world launches a coin
How much further is there to go?” says Khan
how quickly will all of this vaporware actually end up nosediving?”
The calculus among memecoin traders is captured on Pump.Fun in the comment section for the MistaFuccYou coin
“This token shows how fucked the trenches are rn
people like Haro—whose X feed is a kaleidoscope of memes
and crypto—are effectively erased; quite literally commodified into an incomplete and cartoonish version of themselves

You may remember my Sea Otter Classic coverage a few weeks ago where I teased Haro Bike’s new Buzzard gravel race bike
now I have all the racey details for you here
Haro has undergone a complete brand and product reboot
This reboot brings us some new bike models. I am currently reviewing the Saguaro 1, one of Haro’s new mountain bike offerings that launched late last year. Along with the new mountain bike offerings, they also have two new drop bar offerings. Both of these UCI-approved bikes lean towards racing, the Rivette road bike which we learned about here
and the new Buzzard gravel bike which we are learning about
Haro says that the Buzzard Gravel bike is “race-oriented
and adventure-outfitted.” For some of you when you ride
It comes in four different spec levels – Buzzard Carbon Top Shelf
Let’s jump in and see what these levels offer
Built on a lightweight carbon frame and fork
the Top Shelf Buzzard is spec’d for the most efficient combination of both speed and technical performance
Considered the “sweet spot” of the Buzzard family
the Buzzard Carbon 2 fits the bill for a performance gravel bike
it’s everything you need to hit any road
the Buzzard 3 will let you wander without breaking the bank
Vision Team Aero Gravel alloy tubeless wheels

The Buzzard Carbon 2 must have that newfangled wirelss/shifterless design that’s so hot in Europe right now
they’ll all creak under some circumstances
I guess it’s a matter of what kind of creaking sounds best to you
are the reason for an Omnes conversation with Fernando de Haro
director of 'La Mañana del Fin de Semana' on Cope
His book is titled "La foto de las siete menos cinco"

"Very good morning to the early risers of the weekend
"Since 6 a.m. we have been telling you the news of the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria. Bashar al-Assad is no longer the president". This is how his program began on December 8 Weekend Morning Fernando de Haro
who can be heard on weekends from 6 to 8:30 a.m
As you can see, in two and a half hours you can talk about many things. That day began with Syria. De Haro has been, and is, an international reporter, with several books and documentaries. He has also written essays, interviews, a biography on Luigi Giussani (The Momentum of a Life), and is the editor of paginasdigital.es
- The title corresponds to the hour in which during the period 2018-2024 I worked in 'La Tarde' of Cope
At that time this mini-section was being broadcast
Now it has returned to be the 8.25 picture because I have returned to my program of origin: 'La Mañana del Fin de Semana'
- Mikel Azurmendi was a fan of my commentary/description of a photo to close the program
those comments were the occasion to start a precious relationship
Mikel during his last years of life was a great friend
he still is and the relationship continues now that he has passed away
We accompanied each other on the road of life
- When I started doing the program 14 years ago
we all thought that this radio time was a minor moment in the programming
But then we realized that there were many "weekend early risers"
Many more than in other more traditional and better known radio programs
There is no EGM data on the minutes of the photo
But there are many people who tell me that they like that closing
We aspire for the present not to disappear and become a mere memory
The past only has value if it remains present
That is the difference between tradition and traditionalism
- It is true that the subject matter is very varied
But the photographs from the newspapers or from the informative websites from which I take them are very varied
it is made of children crying and laughing
The common thread is the writer's gaze and the listener's gaze that sees through what he he hears
I have been able to travel in the last ten years to many corners of the planet to shoot some documentaries
It seems to me that to do good journalism you have to be in the place where things happen
no matter if that place is a village in northern Nigeria
or a street in Algeciras where an operation against drug trafficking is taking place.
I like to be on the spot to be able to understand and to be able to tell
What I want is to understand and for that I need to let myself be touched
- It seems to me that understanding Islam is decisive
it is an emerging religion with a growing weight in Europe
Islam must be distinguished from Islamism and jihadism
I have seen in Iraq and Syria Daesh graffiti written in German and other European languages of young people from the Western world who went to fight with "the Caliphate"
Not everything the Egyptian Christians do is intelligent
But they have learned after centuries that the dream of hegemony can destroy them
We live in the naivety that bad things are what happens to others
it is a way of using the reason that makes us human
The first impulse of any person is to make the need of others his own need
- Christianity in the Holy Land is essential to understanding the nature of Christianity
Christianity is an event that happened in history
in a specific place and at a specific time
Christianity in the Holy Land reminds us of this nature of event
